Major US bank tells abortion-seeking employees it will cover the cost of their travel

One of America's largest banking corporations is reportedly shelling out cash to help employees circumvent state abortion laws.

As a growing number of Republican-controlled states pass new measures to defend unborn lives, Citigroup announced to its shareholders recently that it is starting to cover the travel costs for abortion-seeking employees, Bloomberg News reported.

"In response to changes in reproductive health-care laws in certain states in the U.S., beginning in 2022 we provide travel benefits to facilitate access to adequate resources," the bank wrote in a filing to be shared during an April 26 shareholder meeting.

Bloomberg reported that the policy will cover all travel-related expenses, including airfare and lodging, for employees who need to travel to a different state to undergo an abortion procedure.

The move aims to counteract abortion bans passed in states like Texas, where a new law prohibiting the procedure after fetal cardiac activity is detected — typically six weeks gestation — has been implemented and upheld. Under the law, state residents are empowered to sue doctors, clinic workers, or anyone who performs an abortion or "aids abets" a woman's attempts to terminate a pregnancy.

Just this week, Idaho's state legislature passed its own abortion ban modeled after the Texas law. It now awaits Republican Gov. Brad Little's signature, which he is expected to provide. Several other states, as well, have either advanced abortion restricting measures in recent years or are now working on legislation.

Citigroup reportedly employs more than 8,500 people in Texas and more than 200,000 people in the U.S.

The banking giant has now joined several other companies, such as dating app conglomerate Match Group Inc. and rideshare firms Lyft and Uber, in using corporate money to combat the Texas law.

Match Group announced last year that it was creating a fund for Texas-based employees that would "help cover the additional costs incurred" of traveling out-of-state for an abortion, Axios reported. Lyft and Uber have both said they would cover the legal fees for drivers sued under the Texas law.

Perhaps it's company policies such as these that have kept Texas' law from preventing as many abortions as first estimated. Studies produced this year have shown that the law resulted in abortions falling by about 10% in the state since its passage.

Pro-life advocates were quick to point out that any decrease in abortions is something to be celebrated, but the tenacity with which abortion supporters seek to aid pregnancy terminations was noted. Undoubtedly, many pro-life advocates hope that the potential overturning of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court later this year will unlock new possibilities for the movement.

The West is waging an information war against Russia, it includes elements of information terrorism, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Friday in an interview with the RT TV channel.

Judicial Watch Sues DOJ for Records of Communication Between Special Counsel John Durham and Attorney General Merrick Garland

Judicial Watch announced today that it filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice for records of communication between Special Counsel John Durham and Attorney General Merrick Garland (Judicial Watch, Inc. v. U.S. Department of Justice (No. 1:22-cv-00734)).

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia after the DOJ failed to respond to an August 23, 2021, FOIA request for:

1. All records of communication, including emails and text messages, between Special Counsel John Durham and Attorney General Merrick Garland.

2. All budget records related to the operations of the office of Special Counsel John Durham.

Senators Ron Johnson and Chuck Grassley raised concerns last year about whether the Justice Department was in potential conflict with the Durham investigation because a senior Justice official, Susan Hennessey, had previously made statements attacking the Durham Investigation. The senators said, in December 2021, that Hennessey “expressed a clear partisan bias against the Special Counsel’s investigation,” referring to one of her tweets: “Durham has made abundantly clear that in a year and a half, he hasn’t come up with anything. I guess this kind of partisan silliness has become characteristic of Barr’s legacy, but unclear to me why Durham would want to go along with it.”

Durham’s investigation began in May 2019, and he was officially designated as Special Counsel in October 2020.

“It shouldn’t take a federal lawsuit to get answers to simple requests for information about Garland’s communications with Durham and basic budget documents about the Durham Special Counsel operation,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton.

I don’t think there could be a better time or moment for us to hear from the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Without further ado, please welcome Director John Brennan. (Applause.)

BRENNAN: Well, thank you very much, Judy. And good afternoon, everyone. It is indeed a pleasure to be back at the Council to compare notes on a remarkably complex and dynamic international scene. And I very much look forward to talking with Judy and Council membership on the many topics that are in the headlines. But I would first like to offer some brief opening remarks to kick off the conversation today.

Now, whenever I administer the oath of office to new officers at our headquarters in Langley, Virginia, I tell them that they are coming aboard at a critical moment in our agency’s history. In the 36 years since I first entered government, I have never been witnessing a time with such a daunting array of challenges to our nation’s security.

Notable among those challenges is that some of the institutions and relationships that have been pillars of the post-Cold War international system are under serious stress. As you well know, the United Kingdom voted last week to leave the European Union. Of all the crises the EU has faced in recent years, the U.K. vote to leave the EU may well be its greatest challenge.

Brexit is pushing the EU into a period of introspection that will pervade virtually everything the EU does in the coming weeks, months, and even years ahead. Euroskeptics around Europe, including in Denmark, France, Italy, and the Netherlands, are demanding their own referendums on multiple EU issues. This will surely make decision-making and forging consensus in the EU much harder.

No member state has ever left the Union, so Europe is entering a period of uncertainty as the U.K. and the EU take stock of the situation and begin staking out their negotiating positions. Discussions about how an exit will work will dominate the EU agenda in the months ahead. Negotiations for the exit agreement will not begin until the prime minister formally notifies the EU of the U.K.’s intention to leave, which Prime Minister David Cameron has said will occur under his successor. EU and member-state leaders, excluding the U.K., will be meeting in the coming days and weeks to begin laying the groundwork for those negotiations.

CIA Director John Brennan recently spoke at a Council on Foreign Relations event. His remarks covered a broad range of near and long term national security risks, including the benefits and costs of geoengineering for combating climate change (transcript and video below). It is not surprising that geoengineering solutions to climate change (which can be conducted unilaterally by states and non-state actors with international consequences), are an area of interest for the CIA director. As Brennan points out, there is a lack of “global norms and standards” for addressing the geopolitical implications of developing this technology, and that’s not a tenable situation. It’s a topic many shy away from, but ignoring it won’t make it go away.

And as CIA officers and their intelligence community colleagues work hard to protect our country from the darker side of technological change, we are mindful of how even beneficial advances can have destabilizing effects in the long run…

Another example is the array of technologies, often referred to collectively as geoengineering, that potentially could help reverse the warming effects of global climate change. One that has gained my personal attention is stratospheric aerosol injection, or SAI: a method of seeding the stratosphere with particles that can help reflect the sun’s heat in much the same way that volcanic eruptions do. An SAI program could limit global temperature increases, reducing some risks associated with higher temperatures, and providing the world economy additional time to transition from fossil fuels. This process is also relatively inexpensive. The National Research Council estimates that a fully deployed SAI program would cost about $10 billion yearly.

As promising as it may be, moving forward on SAI would also raise a number of challenges for our government and for the international community. On the technical side, greenhouse gas emission reductions would still have to accompany SAI to address other climate change effects, such as ocean acidification, because SAI alone would not remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. On the geopolitical side, the technology’s potential to alter weather patterns and benefit certain regions of the world at the expense of other regions could trigger sharp opposition by some nations. Others might seize on SAI’s benefits and back away from their commitment to carbon dioxide reductions. And as with other breakthrough technologies, global norms and standards are lacking to guide the deployment and implementation of SAI and other geoengineering initiatives.

Surreños 13 Gang Member Arrested in the Mountains

OCOTILLO, Calif. – U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the El Centro Sector arrested a gang member Tuesday morning in the Jacumba Wilderness region.

At approximately 7 a.m., agents encountered an undocumented individual who illegally entered the United States, three miles north of the U.S./Mexico border. The individual was arrested and transported to the El Centro Sector Processing Center to be further medically evaluated and processed accordingly.

Record checks revealed this individual is a documented member of a street gang known as the Surreños (Sur-13). This individual has extensive criminal and immigration history that includes numerous felony and misdemeanor convictions as well as multiple re-entries after deportation. This individual was previously ordered to be removed from the U.S by an Immigration judge.

U.S. Border Patrol will process the individual accordingly.

Brennan interviewed by journalist Judy Woodruff of the PBS “NewsHour” has pointed out that Europe must forge better than the request for a referendum by the Eurosceptics after the UK exit. The Brexit, however, will not affect the collaboration of intelligence between the US and the UK in the months and years to come, rather it will be strengthened. The effects of global instability and conflict scenarios are producing movements of displaced persons of the order of 65 million units.

In the Middle East, the geographic borders and national identities are constantly being redefined. The real threat of the ISIL than Al-Qaeda is that it has gone from a few hundred fighters to tens of thousands also improved their ability to conceal their communications.

No matter how many geopolitical crises one sees in the headlines, the reliability, security, vulnerability, and the range of human activity taking place within cyberspace are constantly on my mind.

On the cybersecurity front, organizations of all kinds are under constant attack from a range of actors—foreign governments, criminal gangs, extremist groups, cyber-activists, and many others. In this new and relatively uncharted frontier, speed and agility are king. Malicious actors have shown that they can penetrate a network and withdraw in very short order, plundering systems without anyone knowing they were there until maybe after the damage is already done.

While I served at the White House, cyber was part of my portfolio, and it was always the subject that gave me the biggest headache. Cyber-attackers are determined and adaptive. They often collaborate and share expertise, and they come at you in so many different ways, with an ever-changing array of tools, tactics, and techniques.

Right up there with terrorism, global instability, and cybersecurity is nuclear proliferation and the accompanying development of delivery systems, both tactical and strategic, that make all too real the potential for a nuclear event.

So what else is there besides terrorism, global instability, cybersecurity, and nuclear proliferation that worries the CIA director and keeps CIA officers busy around the clock and around the globe? Well, as a liberal-arts guy from the baby-boomer generation, the rapid pace of technological change during my lifetime has been simply dizzying. Moreover, as we have seen with just about every scientific leap forward, new technologies often carry substantial risks, to the same degree that they hold tremendous promise…”

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg warns President Vladimir Putin’s military advances have an ‘eery similarity’ to Hitler’s prior to WWII

The federal Treasurer has issued a worrying commentary on Russia's military advances saying if Ukraine falls "there could be other countries in their sights down the track".

Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has issued a strong warning amid Russia’s violent invasion of Ukraine.

Mr Frydenberg’s frightening admission comes as the Australia imposed sanctions on 11 additional Russian banks and government entities meaning the majority of the country’s banking assets now covered.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is entering its fourth week with President Vladimir Putin increasing aggression on major cities forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their homes.

Speaking to Sky News Australia host Rowan Dean, Mr Frydenberg said Mr Putin’s military advances reminded him of the events in the lead up to World War II.

“Putin’s actions in Ukraine have an eery similarity to what Hitler did in the Sudetenland in the late 1930s,” he said.

“We remember Neville Chamberlain went off to see Hitler and got a signed piece of paper saying that Hitler wasn’t going to advance on any other countries in Europe and Chamberlain declared peace in our time well it was anything but that.”

Since President Putin ordered the "special military operation" on February 24 world leaders have voiced their condemnation for the invasion, slapping various sanctions on Russian banks, politicians and oligarchs.

Mr Frydenberg applauded the western nations and Australia for standing up to Russia’s attempts to seize Ukraine as he admitted if they were successful the impact would be widespread.

“The world is right, liberal democracies are right to stand firm against this aggression this naked aggression from Vladimir Putin and Russia,” he said.

“But I do fear that if they take Ukraine there could be other countries that could be in their sights down the track.”

Overnight President Putin took a fresh swipe at the West claiming it has been “bullying” Russians living abroad because of the actions of the Kremlin.

"In many Western countries, people, just because they come from Russia, are subject to real bullying today," President Putin said in an address.

"They are denied medical care, their children are expelled from schools, their parents are deprived of jobs, they ban Russian music, culture, literature – trying to cancel Russia."

Leaders in Ukraine have openly condemned the Russian President for the military attacks which have become increasingly targeted on civilian areas.

Mariupol’s Mayor Vadim Boychenko unleashed on the Russian President saying the recent surge in bombing was “genocide”.

“The only word to describe what has happened today is genocide, genocide of our nation, our Ukrainian people,” Mr Boychenko said in a video message.

Up to 80 per cent of the homes in the key port city have been destroyed with up to 30,000 residents forced to flee while another 350,000 seek shelter around Mariupol.
