DeepMind Technologies, Google’s British AI subsidiary, used its machine learning expertise to manage a tokamak, a circular nuclear fusion reactor, in partnership with EPFL’s Swiss Plasma Center ( École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne). The findings, published in the journal Nature, may provide new avenues for developing fusion as a sustainable energy source.

Among the primary challenges for achieving nuclear fusion is containing plasma in a tokamak reactor while preventing it from colliding with its boundaries. To avoid this, researchers at the Swiss Plasma Center used computer simulators to test alternative control systems.

Controlling plasma in a tokamak reactor requires constant magnetic field monitoring. Maintaining the stability of hot plasma formed by ions and electrons is difficult. DeepMind’s approach addresses this challenge through magnetic confinement via a new algorithm. The DeepMind team trained its algorithm first in a computer simulation, then during an experimental phase. The AI model was used to monitor plasma by taking 90 different measurements 10,000 times per second. It then adjusted the voltage accordingly for the reactor’s 19 magnets.

Since 2014, Google has also been working with U.S. fusion researher TAE Technologies to apply its machine learning approach to a different type of fusion reactor.

But attitudes in Ukraine toward Russia’s political and religious leadership are also highly divided between the eastern and western parts of the country. Eastern Ukrainians have more positive attitudes toward Russia than do western Ukrainians. For example, the 2015 survey found that over half of those living in the east (55%) say Russia has an obligation to protect Orthodox Christians living outside its borders. In western Ukraine, meanwhile, a majority (58%) disagree with this view. The patriarch of Moscow also receives higher support in eastern Ukraine than in western Ukraine. Western Ukrainians are more likely to look to their own national patriarchs as the highest authority of the Orthodox Church.
