In Jerusalem, Lindsey Graham Says Iran More of a Danger Than Russia and China

The senator compared Iran to Nazi Germany

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) railed against Iran while in Jerusalem on Monday. He warned the Iranians were more dangerous than Russia and China and compared the Islamic Republic to Nazi Germany.

“Russia and China are rational actors, even though their behavior is thuggish,” Graham said, according to The Jerusalem Post. “Iran is a theocracy motivated by religion that compels them to purify their faith and have the world submit. The Nazis wanted a master race, and the Iranians want a master religion. People like that cannot be ignored.”

Graham suggested if Iran acquires a nuclear weapon, it could start an arms race in the region, ignoring the fact that Israel has a secret nuclear program. He argued that Israel wouldn’t be able to live with a nuclear Iran.

“I guarantee you the Jewish people can’t live that way. One Holocaust was enough. There will be war. Why can’t Iran have nuclear weapons? Because Israelis say, ‘Never again,'” he said.

Graham’s unhinged comments come as the US and Iran appear to be close to reaching an agreement in Vienna to revive the Iran nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA. Even though the JCPOA puts strict limits on Iran’s civilian nuclear program and makes it subject to the most stringent inspections in the world, Graham is against a revival of the deal.

While in Israel, Graham met with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, and Defense Minister Benny Gantz. Graham said he raised the idea of a mutual defense treaty with Israel to send a message to the world that the “destruction of the Jewish state means war with the United States.”

Gantz opposed the idea of a mutual defense treaty with the US when it was discussed during the Trump administration, warning it could endanger Israel’s freedom to launch attacks in the region. Graham said that he “would never suggest that any defense agreement would restrict Israel’s ability to act on their own.”

Jared Kushner has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for a second year running for his work on normalising relations between Israel and Arab countries. The son-in-law of former US President Donald told the Jerusalem Post that thanks for this must go to the "visionary leaders and efforts of millions of Israelis and Arabs" through whom the so-called "Abraham Accords continue to strengthen, making the Middle East — and the world — a safer, more prosperous place."

US Congressman and Republican candidate for governor of New York Lee Zeldin nominated both Kushner and the former White House adviser's deputy, Avi Berkowitz, said the New York Post.

"The Abraham Accords, signed in 2020, represent the most significant diplomatic breakthrough between Israel and Arab nations in decades," wrote Zeldin in his nomination. "Against the background of a centuries-old conflict and the Covid-19 pandemic, rising tensions and Iran's growing influence, Kushner and Berkowitz successfully brought together regional leaders, and forged regional alliances better capable of countering Iran's malign influence."

In September 2020, the UAE and Israel signed a US-sponsored deal to normalise relations. Since then, the two countries have signed dozens of bilateral agreements in various fields, including investment, banking services and tourism.

Three other Arab states – Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan – joined the UAE in the controversial move that came to be known as the Abraham Accords.

Last year, prominent American lawyer Alan Dershowitz, one of the most vocal supporters of the occupation state of Israel, also nominated Kushner and Berkowitz for the peace prize.

DC Comics reveals that the Flash has the power to see beyond the fourth wall, Deadpool-style, with the help of DC's own Doctor Strange.

While the most famous fourth wall-breaker in comics is undoubtedly Marvel's Deadpool, DC's Flash is about to give the Merc with a Mouth a run for his money. One of the very few characters with the unique power of "comics awareness", Deadpool is acutely aware that he's a fictional character in a comic book, completely at the mercy of his writers. But in The Flash #776, the same power is granted to Wally West, via DC's equivalent of Doctor Strange: Doctor Fate.

Deadpool initially didn't break the fourth wall at all; he was created by legendary writer/artist Rob Liefeld in 1991 as a simple mercenary with twin katanas and a striking red-and-black costume design. It wasn't until the mid-2000s that other writers gave him his irreverent style of humor along with his signature ability to point out flaws and idiosyncrasies in his own writing. He would even acknowledge the reader from time to time - but Doctor Fate goes one step farther, and actively calls on the reader for help.

The Flash is dragged into a cave by Doctor Fate, who informs Wally that the two are trapped in a two-dimensional causeway and "…it's going to be up to you to guide us. To help us through." When Flash doesn't understand how he can help, Doctor Fate corrects him, pointing to the reader and shouting "YOU! The reader of this book! Our fate lies in your hands." At various points in the story, Doctor Fate insists that the reader turn the book clockwise, counterclockwise, and eventually upside-down, shifting gravity within the world of the comic. Doctor Fate and the Flash even climb from panel to panel, evading monsters on every page.

As an outside observer, the reader of comics is seldom taking action within the book. From a Doylist perspective, of course, the reader is not; the pages have been printed long before the reader ever bought a copy. Nor does the book account for a digital copy of the issue (Doctor Fate doesn't tell the reader to turn a phone, tablet or laptop, for example). Nevertheless, this is potentially one of the strongest powers in comics lore, showing that while Deadpool is content to make jokes about the meta-nature of his existence, Doctor Fate and the Flash actively use the reader to accomplish their goals.

With Doctor Fate having opened the Flash's eyes toward the fourth wall, Wally West is now aware of the world beyond the confines of his universe. The episodic nature of the current Flash run does not necessarily mean Wally will remember this encounter, however. Nevertheless, Deadpool no longer has a monopoly on breaking the fourth wall…for that honor now belongs to the Flash.

Our banks and financial institutions are already obligated to report to the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada, or FINTRAC. As of today, all crowdfunding platforms, and the payment service providers they use, must register with FINTRAC and must report large and suspicious transactions to FINTRAC.

As of today, a bank or other financial service provider will be able to immediately freeze or suspend the account of an individual or business affiliated with these illegal blockades without a court order. In doing so, they will be protected against civil liability.

Federal government institutions will have a new broad authority to share relevant information with banks and other financial service providers to ensure that we can all work together to put a stop to the funding of these illegal blockades.

This is about following the money. This is about stopping the financing of these illegal blockades. We are today serving notice: if your truck is being used in these protests, your corporate accounts will be frozen. The insurance on your vehicle will be suspended. Send your semi-trailers home. The Canadian economy needs them to be doing legitimate work, not to be illegally making us all poorer.

We are announcing these measures after careful reflection. I spoke directly with the heads of Canadian banks and I would like to commend them for doing their part to uphold Canadian laws and Canadian democracy, and to protect our economy.

Team Canada has stood together over the past two years. We have trusted one another. We have leaned on one another.

What we are facing today is a threat to our democratic institutions, to our economy, and to peace, order, and good government in Canada. This is unacceptable. It cannot stand and it will not stand.

Two years since her last visit to Israel, the Speaker of the House will lead a congressional delegation to the Knesset

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived in Israel on Tuesday, for her first official visit in over two years, with the Iran talks in Vienna sure to be on the agenda.

Automakers Resume Production After Canada Bridge Protest Ends

Several car factories that saw operations disrupted last week after protests in Canada blocked a key border crossing with the United States resumed activities on Monday, but some issues lingered.

Trucker-led demonstrations against Canada's Covid-19 restrictions disrupted traffic on the Ambassador Bridge for seven days, but authorities on Sunday cleared out the protestors.

The bridge, which connects Windsor, Canada with Detroit on the American side, is a key route for automakers to ship parts and vehicles back and forth across the border during the manufacturing process.

General Motors, which had to cut shifts at some plants last week amid a shortage of materials, said work resumed as normal on Monday.

"No issues to report," a company spokesperson told AFP.

Stellantis, which also shortened several shifts in Canadian and US plants due to the bridge closure, resumed normal operations, a spokesperson said.

The company did not provide an estimate of projected losses due to the disruptions but said it "will look to make up that production in the coming months."

"We are working with our carriers to get parts into the plants as quickly as possible to mitigate any further disruptions," the spokesperson said.

Toyota, which likewise felt the impact last week at its Canadian factories as well as three sites in the US states of Kentucky, West Virginia and Alabama, said operations have not yet returned to normal.

"All three lines at our plants in Canada are not running still and only certain lines are running at our other three US impacted plants," a spokesperson said.

"We're expecting it to improve each day this week as we get all routes back to normal."

Honda said operations on the US side of the border were running.

The company on Friday temporarily suspended one production line at its Alliston plant on the Canadian side, and on Monday had only one line working, although that was "due to previously scheduled downtime unrelated to the border issue."

WASHINGTON – A worsening inflation picture has touched off a range of opinions from the Federal Reserve’s policymakers about just how fast they should raise interest rates beginning at their next meeting in March. James Bullard, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, on Monday reiterated his call for the Fed to take the aggressive step of raising its benchmark short-term rate by a full percentage point by July 1. Esther George, president of the Kansas City Fed, expressed support for a more “gradual” approach. And Mary Daly of the San Francisco Fed declined to commit herself to more than a modest rate hike next month. Their comments follow last week's report that inflation jumped 7.5% in January from a year ago, the fastest increase in four decades. Prices also rose 0.6% from December to January, the same as the previous month, suggesting that price gains still aren't slowing, as many economists and Fed officials have hoped. The Fed typically responds to high inflation by making borrowing more expensive, which slows spending and the pace of price increases.

Last week's report on consumer inflation prompted a sharp increase in expectations for rate increases by the Fed this year. Some economists now forecast as many as six or seven quarter-point hikes. That's much higher than the Fed's projections in December of just three rate increases for 2022. In their remarks, Bullard and another policymaker, Thomas Barkin, head of the Richmond Fed, noted how the acceleration of prices has broadened beyond autos and other pandemic-affected industries. Even inflation measures that exclude such categories have shown sharp price rises. Still, the two officials expressed differing views of how the Fed should respond. “Inflation is very high," Barkin said in an interview on SiriusXM. “And the more recent readings suggest it’s broader and more persistent. I think it's timely to get started and steadily move back toward pre-pandemic levels."

Barkin's use of the term “steadily” suggested that he favors moving at a more measured pace than Bullard, who said last week that the Fed might even decide to raise rates before its next regularly scheduled meeting in mid-March. In an interview Monday on CNBC, Bullard did not repeat that suggestion. But he said “inflation is broadening and possibly accelerating." And he stood by his call for a full percentage point increase in the Fed's key rate by July 1. An increase that large would mean rate hikes at the Fed's March, May, and June meetings, with one of those hikes amounting to a half-point.

“We need to front-load more" of the rate increases, Bullard said. “We've been surprised to the upside on inflation. … Our credibility is on the line here.” No other Fed officials have publicly endorsed a half-point rate hike at an upcoming meeting, though on Monday investors were pricing in a 60% likelihood of such a step in March. On Sunday, Daly said on CBS' “Face the Nation” that an increase that large could hurt the economy by potentially slowing spending too quickly. “History tells us Fed policy that abrupt and aggressive … can actually have a destabilizing effect on the very growth and price stability we’re trying to achieve,” Daly said. Daly expressed support for a rate hike in March but stopped short of backing Barkin's call for ongoing increases.

“I see March as an appropriate time to raise the interest rate, and then we have to take in all of the information … and make the right decision at the right time for the economy,” she said. On Friday, George weighed in on another option under consideration by Fed policy makers. She said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that the Fed should consider selling some of the Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities that make up its nearly $9 trillion balance sheet. The Fed said after its most recent policy meeting last month that it would reduce the size of its balance sheet by letting its investments mature and not reinvesting the proceeds. Going further and actually selling some of those bonds would accelerate the process of reducing the Fed's holdings and would likely send longer-term rates higher. Fed Chair Jerome Powell has not commented publicly since the most recent jobs and inflation reports have shown strong hiring and wage growth along with rapid price gains. Powell is awaiting confirmation by the Senate for a second four-year term. Lael Brainard, a Fed board member who has been nominated by President Joe Biden for the vice chair position, is also awaiting Senate approval.

The Senate Banking Committee is scheduled to vote on their nominations Tuesday, along with Biden's picks for three open Fed board seats: Sarah Bloom Raskin, a former Fed and Treasury official, and Lisa Cook and Philip Jefferson, both economists.
