Former Harvard Chemistry Chair Admits to Taking Tens of Thousands of Dollars From China

The former chair of Harvard University’s chemistry department accused of hiding Chinese ties had admitted to taking tens of thousands of dollars from China, a video presented to the federal court on Dec. 17 shows.

The video, shot during federal investigators’ interrogation of nanoscientist Charles Lieber, was played for jurors during the Friday court hearing, the fourth day of the trial on Lieber’s alleged false statements about China funding.

The 62-year-old Harvard professor had maintained that he didn’t take payments from a Chinese university except for compensation of his travel costs to China. But he shifted account quickly after Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents Robert Plumb and Kara Spice accosted him with copies of evidence, including a bilingual contract he signed with the Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) in 2011.

“That’s pretty damning,” Lieber, dressed in a blue jacket, told the agents at the campus police station during a three-hour interrogation, which took place on the day of Lieber’s arrest nearly two years ago. “Now that you bring it up, yes, I do remember,” he said in the recording, local media reported.

The five-year agreement described Lieber as a “strategic scientist” at the Chinese school that entitled him to $50,000 per month with approximately $158,000 in living expenses. It also alluded to his future involvement with China’s Thousand Talents Plan, a state-run program to solicit top scientific and specialized experts from around the world.

Later in the interview, FBI agents showed Lieber an email he wrote, asking the Wuhan university to pay half of his salary in cash with the other half deposited into a Chinese bank account.

The startling speech in the clip attached (below) is part of a new Chinese Communist Party effort to undermine the United States on the world stage, taking advantage of an increasingly weak Biden regime.

No such wild sabre-rattling came from China during the Trump administration. They didn’t dare. But with Biden and Harris at the helm for less than a year, the world is now witnessing a rush to exploit the power vacuum in both American politics and foreign policy.

With U.S. military leaders more concerned with deploying troops around the nation’s own Capitol, as well as professing preferences for critical race theory training, China sees its opportunity and they’re not being shy about it.

In the aforementioned clip, Wang Wenbin, the spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, explicitly outlined how the U.S. was no longer atop the international pecking order:

“The era in which the US acted arbitrarily in the world under the pretext of so-called ‘democracy’ and ‘human rights’ is over,” he asserted.

And while White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki couldn’t even insist that Beijing would face “repercussions” for its human rights abuses, Wang was quick to demonize America for its greatest ever foreign policy misadventure in the Middle East and Asia.

“We condemn the brutal US military intervention by the US in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria in the name of “democracy” and “human rights,” he exclaimed, before calling on the “international community to investigate the US military’s war crimes of killing innocent civilians around the world and hold it accountable.”

These laws have led to previous criminal penalties against Pfizer in the past, including the historical $2.3 billion fine for illegally marking drugs not approved by the FDA. Now, this corrupt company is pushing once more, possibly planning for a future criminal case for their botched vaccine studies.

As Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla called for jailing people who criticize his company’s vaccine, thanks to this corrupt marriage between corporate and state, his portfolio has increased substantially. And he’s not alone. This taxpayer-funded vaccine scheme has created at least a dozen new pharma billionaires whose portfolios have skyrocketed thanks to government tyranny.

It’s not just the big pharma insiders who’ve won big from government programs fleecing the taxpayers in the name of the covid-19 vaccine — it’s also the government.

NYT investigation reveals ‘hundreds’ of civilian deaths uncounted in US strikes

An investigation by the New York Times has found that the Pentagon severely downplayed the civilian death toll from its “precision” strikes in Syria and Iraq, while failing to investigate reports of potential civilian casualties.

The New York Times investigation, the first part of which was released on Monday, draws on over 1,311 casualty assessment reports that were previously kept under wraps by the Pentagon. Having reviewed the files and visited “nearly 100 casualties sites” in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan, the Times reported that the US military often dismissed reports of civilian casualties as non-credible, despite failing to visit the sites or speak to the witnesses.

The Times revealed that in 216 instances in which the Pentagon found reports of civilian casualties credible, its investigators visited the actual site of the bombing in only one case. None of the investigations resulted in any penalties for those responsible for the strikes, and only one “possible violation” in mapping out a strike was identified by the Pentagon.

The Times investigation also revealed that trigger-happy US troops tended to rely on “incorrect or incomplete” intelligence to hit terrorist targets, sometimes killing dozens of civilians instead. Confirmation bias was said to play a role in troops interpreting scant intelligence in a way that affirms their “pre-existing beliefs” about the targets.

For instance, during a strike in Iraq in 2015, US forces killed a child after identifying him as “an unknown heavy object” who was being “dragged” to a supposed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) position by an alleged militant.

Sloppy targeting practices resulted in around 120 Syrian villagers dying in a US strike on July 19, 2016, according to the investigation. At the time of the strike, the Pentagon apparently thought that 85 militants were killed in the bombing instead, even though it took place “far from the front line.” In another botched strike, a warplane killed an entire family escaping West Mosul in 2017, mistaking the civilian vehicle with two children for a car bomb.

Even in instances in which the US acknowledged civilian casualties, it was not in a hurry to pay compensation to the victims, with the Times reporting that “fewer than a dozen condolence payments were made.”

Dem senator claims he didn't know event he attended was linked to Communist Party — but video suggests otherwise

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) issued a mea culpa Friday after he was caught attending an event linked to the Community Party USA.

What is the background?

The Connecticut People's World Committee hosted its annual Amistad Awards last Saturday, Dec. 11. Not only did Blumenthal attend the event, but he honored the award winners with "certificates of special recognition" from the United States Senate, according to the Yankee Institute.

The problem is: The Connecticut People's World Committee is directly associated with the Communist Party USA, and last Saturday's award ceremony was hosted in honor of the Communist Party USA's 102nd birthday.

What is Blumenthal saying now?

After his appearance at the event generated criticism, Blumenthal is now claiming ignorance.

In an interview with the Hartford Courant, Blumenthal said he was unaware of the event's links to the Communist Party USA, and said he would not have attended the event if he had known the ties.

"My understanding was that this ceremony was strictly a labor event. If I had known the details, I wouldn’t have gone," Blumenthal said. "Let me just say very emphatically, I’m a Democrat and a strong believer in American capitalism. I have been consistently a Democrat and a strong supporter and believer in American capitalism."

The Democratic senator further pleaded his case of ignorance by suggesting some details fall through the cracks of his busy schedule.

"I go to a lot of events, places, meetings, rallies, and ceremonies in Connecticut. I’m delighted to be invited anywhere, and in this instance, I was invited by local labor unions to honor these three individuals, and that’s why I was there. That’s pretty much it," Blumenthal said.

Blumenthal also dismissed the criticism.

"People are going to do what they’re going to do. I’m just going to keep doing my job for the people of Connecticut. There’s a lot at stake in the Senate right now - voting rights, the ongoing pandemic, making childcare affordable, lowering prescription drug prices. That’s where my focus is," he told the Courant.

Video from the event suggests Blumenthal could not have been unaware the event was linked to the Communist Party USA. In fact, the person who introduced Blumenthal noted "how important the Community Party is."

Disgraced Cop Gets NO JAIL Despite Admitting to the Repeated Rape of a Child

Washington, MO — When he was just 13-years-old, the victim of Byrnes Mill officer Ryan Shomaker was raped. The abuse would last years as the boy transitioned from a middle school student to high school, and this week, after attempting to seek justice for years, this abused boy found out that his rapist will not be going to jail.

Shomaker, 48, admitted to the abuse and pleaded guilty to second-degree sodomy, not once, but twice. On Dec 2 in Jefferson County, and on Nov. 22 in St. Louis County, Shomaker admitted to the crimes against this boy.

In Jefferson County, Shomaker was charged with first-degree statutory sodomy, an unclassified felony punishable by five years to life in prison, and in St. Louis County he was charged with two counts of sodomy. However, he was allowed to plea down to one count each of second-degree sodomy.

As the Leader reports, on Dec. 2, Jefferson County Div. 5 Circuit Judge Victor Melenbrink sentenced Shomaker to seven years in prison in the Jefferson County case, and St. Louis County Circuit Judge Joseph Dueker sentenced Shomaker to seven years in the St. Louis County case.

Despite these sentences, after the fact, Shomaker’s sentences were both suspended and this child rapist was given just 5 years probation.

Shomaker’s attorney called the lack of jail for the child rapist, “a fair outcome.”

“It was a negotiated resolution with both counties,” Joseph Wayne Flees II said according to the Leader. “We feel it addresses some of the potential concerns the state may have had in the case with their victim. It is essentially a fair outcome.”

According to court documents, Shomaker met his victim on an app in 2014 when he was just 13. The abuse continued for the next four years until the victim worked up enough courage to come forward.

After the victim came forward, Shomaker “separated” from the Byrnes Mill Police Department on Oct. 31, 2018. His case has been moving through the courts ever since.

The reason Shomaker was charged in two different counties was due to the fact that the abuse took place in multiple jurisdictions. According to the probable-cause statement, the victim told a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy that Shomaker sexually molested him multiple times during his juvenile years, “at least two of which were within the Jefferson County jurisdiction.”

The first time they met, the boy was taken back to Shomaker’s home where he was sodomized by the officer, according to court documents. Just three days later, Shomaker found the boy again, where he was taken to a parking lot in House Springs, where Shomaker abused the child again.

This pattern unfolded for years and despite text messages proving that Shomaker knew he was doing this to a child, this monster will not be going to jail.

As the Free Thought Project reports on a regular basis, police sexual misconduct is not rare. Hundreds of officers are accused and prosecuted every year with many of them receiving slaps on the wrist. Shomaker’s case highlights the fact that even when cops horribly abuse children, they often get off with no jail.

Just last September, TFTP reported on a similar travesty of justice when Benjamin Reinhart, a disgraced officer with Genesee County was “sentenced” as part of a plea deal, to just five years of probation. The Genesee Human Oppression Strike Team, or GHOST, caught the officer in April attempting to lure a child for sex. He was on duty at the time. He didn’t even have to register as a public sex offender.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul intends to change definition of 'fully vaccinated' to also include booster shots

New York State Gov. Kathy Hochul declared that she intends to change the definition of "fully vaccinated" to include booster shots.

During a press conference on Thursday, the Democratic governor of New York announced that she plans to expand the definition of fully vaccinated.

"At some point, we have to determine that fully vaccinated means boosted as well," Hochul proclaimed. "And we’ll give people a sufficient timeframe to make that happen."

Currently, New York classifies "fully vaccinated" as when a person has received two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine or one shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

"People are underestimating the power of omicron because they say, 'people aren't getting sick, they aren't going to hospitals;' but if you have a million more people infected, that means you will have over-flowing hospitals at this rate," Hochul said. "This is a crisis; this is a healthcare crisis and people are going to die."

CNY Central reported, "Gov. Hochul emphasized that if people had gotten vaccinated early on in the pandemic, the mask mandate would not have been necessary."

The outlet noted that Dr. Mary Bassett — the Health Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health — said during the press conference that the current winter spike of COVID-19 cases is something the state anticipated.

"We’re in the midst of a delta surge, and we have omicron in the wings," Bassett said.

Britain’s health secretary, Sajid Javid, has railed against the unvaccinated for the “impact” he says they are having on fellow citizens, guilt-tripping them to “really think about the damage they are doing to society”.

Some of the city’s historical family residents have been fleeing in search of greener pastures in Texas and Florida.I find it to be the most hypocritical position to have Pelosi retire in Florida, an increasingly Republican state, which amounts to the ultimate example of a limousine/private jet liberals fleeing the consequences of their own policy preferences. She has spent a career bashing the rich but will retire with more than $100 million in assets fleeing to one of the 7 states with no income tax, strongest economy, and stores that are not the targets of wholesale gang shoplifting sanctioned by law.

Former Prime Minister of Slovakia Arrested on Live TV for Backing Covid Protest

Former Slovakian prime minister Robert Fico was arrested on live television this week after attempting to give a statement ahead of a planned protest that would defy the country’s Wuhan virus restrictions.

The arrest of the former Prime Minister of Slovakia, who leads the left-populist Direction – Slovak Social Democracy (SMER-SD) party, came on Thursday evening as he was making an attempt to give a statement to Slovakian television cameras.

Fico commented said of his arrest: “This is what democracy on the air looks like, ladies and gentlemen. So once again, we wanted to make a peaceful passage through Bratislava and look at this situation.”

Addressing a police officer, Fico added: “Are you normal, man? How dare you talk to a Member of Parliament like that? What crime have I committed? What crime have I committed? Explain to me. You aim to stop this protest because this protest was to show how democracy is abused in Slovakia.”

According to a report from the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle, the protest had been announced on Tuesday and was to protest Slovakian president Zuzana Caputova and her objection to a referendum on a possible new national election.

Protests under Slovakia’s Wuhan virus restrictions, which state that no more than six people are allowed to gather in public, are effectively illegal, although Fico claimed the rally was not in breach of restrictions as protesters would be in their cars and not gathered on the street.

Fico has been an ardent critic of the Slovakian government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic and of the restrictions put in place in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus.

On Friday the news service Reuters reported that following his arrest Fico could face charges of incitement, but the matter was in the hands of local prosecutors and no charges had yet been filed.

Per capita, Slovakia has seen some of the most infections and deaths in Europe from the coronavirus, with nearly 800,000 confirmed cases and over 15,000 deaths.

Brexit Minister Frost Resigns over Boris Johnson’s Tax Hikes, Lockdown Lunacy

Boris Johnson’s future as Prime Minister was thrown into further question late Saturday night after it emerged that Brexit negotiator Lord David Frost has resigned over the government’s leftist policies on taxes, the Build Back Better green agenda, and the push for more coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

Questions over Prime Minister Johnson’s leadership have swirled in London in the wake of a disastrous election defeat to the Liberal Democrats in North Shropshire this week, as well as a large scale Tory rebellion against the latest round of COVID restrictions earlier this month in Parliament.

The problems facing Mr Johnson’s administration were amplified on Saturday following a report from the Mail on Sunday, which pre-empted an announcement that Lord Frost had resigned from the government. While his resignation was reportedly intended to officially take place next month, the report brought the move forward to have “immediate effect”.

Lord Frost, who spearheaded the negotiations during the United Kingdom’s separation from the European Union, first publicly criticised the government in November, warning that Johnson’s high tax “European social model” policies would jeopardise the benefits of gaining independence from the EU.

The Minister of State for the Cabinet Office was also reportedly concerned about the Prime Minister’s Build Back Better agenda, under which Johnson has pledged to reduce British carbon emissions to net-zero by 2050 — a project which is expected to run costs in the trillions.

Jeremy Corbyn’s Brother Piers Arrested over Call to ‘Burn Down’ Offices of Pro-Lockdown Politicians

Piers Corbyn, the brother of former Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, has reportedly been arrested after footage emerged on social media in which he apparently called for people to “burn down” the offices of pro-lockdown politicians.

On Sunday morning, the Metropolitan Police announced they had arrested an unnamed man in his seventies on suspicion of encouragement to commit arson, in relation to a “video posted online in which people were encouraged to burn down MPs’ offices”.

The arrest came after footage of the brother of far-left MP Jeremy Corbyn appeared to encourage violence in response to lockdown measures.

In the clip, Corbyn, 74, told the crowd: “We are getting more support but we’ve got to get a bit more physical. It means we have to take down these lying vax centres, and we’ve got to take down these lying MPs.

“We’ve got to support all those and we’ve got to hammer to death those scum, those scum who have decided to go ahead with introducing new fascism.

“We’ve got to get a list of them, we can get a list of them on websites, and if your MP is one of them, go to their offices and — well, I would recommend burning them down, OK? But I can’t say that on-air.”

Alabama judge who called colleagues ‘Uncle Tom’ removed from bench

An Alabama judge who called her fellow jurists “Uncle Tom” and “heifer,” and who allegedly put her finger on the scales in domestic cases has been yanked from the bench.

A nine-judge panel found that Nakita Blocton, of Jefferson County, Ala., had a history of “inappropriate comments” and, as regarded her staff, a “pattern of abuse,” according to Law & Crime.

That abuse included “excessive, unproductive, and unnecessary nights and weekends” she forced her underlings to work, according to the panel’s Dec. 10 judgment.

And when her actions came under investigation by the state Judicial Inquiry Commission, the disgraced magistrate attempted a coverup, “order[ing] employees to allow her to see their private cellphones so that information that might be relevant to the Commission’s investigation could be deleted,” according to the judgment.

Blocton, who was a circuit judge in the Birmingham court’s domestic relations division, also used fake Facebook accounts “to communicate with litigants in a pending domestic-relations case in an effort to affect the outcome of the case,” according to the judgment.

She threatened one party in a divorce case and provided advice to another through the fake accounts, according to the complaint.

Coxiella burnetii is considered a re-emerging zoonosis in many countries. The bacterium is enzootic in livestock and wildlife in the United States, and environmental contamination is widespread. Despite the potential for exposure, the estimated prevalence of Q fever in humans and animals is not well elucidated, and reported human infections in the United States are relatively rare. Zoonotic transmission of the bacterium is usually associated with abortions in domestic ruminants, but other modes of transmission, such as contact with infected blood and/or milk during field dressing of infected wildlife, have not been thoroughly investigated. Studies of zoonotic pathogen transmission between animal reservoir hosts and humans are usually established in response to documented emergence or re-emergence of a zoonosis in a particular locale, and, as such, the prevalence of infection in wildlife is largely unknown for many zoonotic pathogens, including C. burnetii. The objective of this study was to create a disease risk surface for C. burnetii seroprevalence in wild white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in New York State. Blood samples were collected from hunter-harvested deer from across New York State in 2009 and 2010. The samples were processed and tested for the presence of anti-C. burnetii antibodies via indirect microimmunofluorescence assays using phase II C. burnetii strain RSA439. Overall, 14.50% of the tested white-tailed deer were C. burnetii phase II seropositive. The dual Kernel density estimation method was used to create a smoothed disease risk surface, which revealed variation in seroprevalence ranging from 0% to 32.0%. Areas of higher seroprevalence were detected in four discrete areas of Central New York and in one additional area in the southwest corner of the northern part of the state. This suggests certain locales where humans may be at increased risk for exposure to the bacterium secondary to contact with potentially infected deer.

Investigation finds device belonging to Rona Wilson, a critic of Modi’s government, was targeted with controversial Pegasus tech just before he was arrested on terror charges

The case against a jailed Indian activist has come under renewed scrutiny after it was revealed that the man, a critic of the government, had his phone hacked using controversial Israeli spyware, the Guardian reported.

The report published Friday said an analysis of Rona Wilson’s phone by experts from Amnesty International found that it was infected with Pegasus spyware, developed by the NSO Group, between July 2017 and March 2018, some three months before he was arrested on terror-related charges.

Amnesty’s investigation found that during that period, Wilson’s phone was targeted with 15 text messages containing links to install the Pegasus spyware and compromise the device.

The report said Wilson was part of a network of advocates for the rights of indigenous communities and Indians who are members of low castes. Members of the network have been detained since 2018.

The report said research carried out by US digital forensic science firm Arsenal Consulting found that evidence had been planted on the computers of some of those detained, including Wilson.

Teachers get raises, bonuses from federal COVID relief funds meant to reopen schools safely

NEA guidance issued in June outlined how unions could claim entitlement to increased teacher compensation from federal COVID-19 emergency relief funding and school cost savings realized during the pandemic.

This week's Golden Horseshoe once again goes to the U.S. Department of Education for allowing school districts to use pandemic relief funds for pay raises and bonuses for teachers despite the funds being appropriated to reopen schools safely.

Schools nationwide received $190 billion through three relief packages passed. Of that total, the largest sum, $122 billion, was from President Biden's American Rescue Plan.

The federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds were ostensibly meant to reopen schools safely amid the pandemic and return students to in-person instruction. Millions, however, were used for COVID-19 bonuses, teacher pay raises, even to cover payroll, Just The News found.

Teachers, who are public employees, continued receiving their normal pay despite school closures while teaching remotely.

Connecticut, which was awarded over $1.6 billion in ESSER funding, spent $21.1 million on "personal services-salaries" and $2.6 million on employee benefits, the state website shows.

Detroit Public Schools used $60 million of its pandemic relief funds to give out COVID-19 bonuses, school documents show.

"Salary increases will be one-time bonuses funded through COVID funding," the Detroit Public Schools Community District report showed.

The Detroit Federation of Teachers signed a school reopening letter of agreement with DPSCD that detailed the "COVID-19 supplement of $500 each quarter" for union members.

"DFT bargaining unit members who mainly or entirely perform their job duties in-person, face-to-face, for the 2021-22 academic year shall receive a COVID-19 supplement of $500 for each quarterly marking period that they complete through June 30, 2022," the union agreement with DPSCD stated.

In addition, teachers who provide blended or virtual teaching will receive a total of $2,000 in COVID-19 bonus payments through the end of June 2022.

Despite COVID-19 posing little risk to those under 18, teachers unions pushed back against reopening schools and prolonged virtual learning, resulting in learning loss for students, with minority students disproportionately affected.

"The pandemic widened preexisting opportunity and achievement gaps, hitting historically disadvantaged students hardest," McKinsey & Co. reported. "In math, students in majority Black schools ended the year with six months of unfinished learning, students in low-income schools with seven."

The National Education Association, the largest union in the U.S., pushed for ESSER funds to be used for teacher pay in a document titled "The ESSER Funds: Bargaining and Advocacy Guidance for Safe and Equitable Schools."

Why Hunter decided to take his computer to a repairman (and ultimately abandon it) two weeks before his father's presidential announcement, rather than just buy a new one, could be an interesting puzzle for Freudian theorists. But out of that fateful decision comes Miranda Devine's fascinating book Laptop from Hell: Hunter Biden, Big Tech, and the Dirty Secrets the President Tried to Hide.

Devine's gripping account of the Biden family's sleazy business dealings, gleaned from the contents of Hunter's hard drive, picks up where the New York Post‘s stellar pre-election reporting left off.

Many of the details have been reported before in bits and pieces. Devine weaves them together with new direct reporting on correspondence and documents pulled from the laptop and puts them in context with what was happening at the time with Joe Biden's vice presidency and presidential run.

The book is a devastating chronicle of political corruption. From Ukraine to Mexico to China, Hunter Biden's private correspondence shows how he and his family leveraged his father's position to win high-paying, low-work gigs with shady foreign actors—and how Joe's official actions at times directly benefited his family's financial backers.

At best, Joe Biden comes off as a hapless father who facilitates his son's clearly unethical moneymaking schemes. At worst, and as some of Hunter's texts and emails suggest, Joe was a knowing participant and beneficiary of the family business.

The fact that Hunter's market value was derived from his father's position seemed to be a source of resentment for the younger Biden, even as he continued to cash in on the name. Hunter complained in texts to his daughter that he had financially supported the Biden clan for three decades and that "pop" takes a cut of "half [my] salary." Financial records and correspondence reported on by Devine indicate that money from Hunter's business accounts was used to cover Joe's AT&T bill and home maintenance expenses and that a portion of at least one major China deal was earmarked for the elder Biden.

As the 2020 presidential election approached, Hunter's correspondence sounded more and more like the impotent protests of middle Corleone brother Fredo in The Godfather Part II: "I can handle things! I'm smart! Not like everybody says, like dumb. I'm smart and I want respect!"

He sent long, passive-aggressive missives to his father.

REVEALED: CDC Massively Inflated Number of 'Vaccinated' Americans

CDC Director Rochelle Walensky has been wildly inflating the number of "vaccinated" Americans by counting potentially tens of millions of "boosters" and second doses as first time shots, according to a report from Bloomberg News.

To give you an idea of the scale of the CDC's overreporting, in just one state, Pennsylvania, the CDC overreported the number of first doses for the elderly "by about 850,000" when compared to the state's own revised estimates.

There's only around 2.27 million elderly people (aged 65 and over) in all of Pennsylvania.

"Alison Beam, the state's acting health secretary, said their review showed that some first doses were actually second doses – meaning that fully inoculated people were counted twice as half-vaccinated," Bloomberg reported.

Last weekend, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revised a bellwether metric – the share of people 65 and older with at least one shot. The agency reduced the proportion from 99.9%, where it had been capped for weeks, to 95%, without changing its raw shot totals.

The move acknowledged a dynamic state officials have discovered: in collating reams of data on vaccinations, the U.S. has counted too many shots as first doses when they are instead second doses or booster shots.

CDC data show 240 million people with at least one shot, or about 72.5% of the population. But the agency says only 203 million are fully vaccinated, or 61.3%, an 11-percentage-point difference that is far larger than in other developed countries.

State and local officials say it's improbable that 37 million Americans got one shot without completing their inoculations. Instead, they say, the government has regularly and incorrectly counted booster shots and second doses as first doses, a dynamic the CDC acknowledged in a statement.

That means both the fully vaccinated and completely unvaccinated are officially undercounted. The precise number miscounted is unknown, but revisions in data from three states Illinois, Pennsylvania and West Virginia found enough over-counting of first shots to indicate millions of unvaccinated people nationally who've mistakenly been counted as having received a dose.

Changes to national data on the scale of Pennsylvania's revisions, for example, would mean increasing the number of Americans who are unvaccinated by more than 10 million.

"The truth is, we have no idea," said Clay Marsh, West Virginia's Covid czar.

The CDC put out an empty statement dodging the issue:

The White House referred questions about the over-count of first shots to the CDC. In a statement, the agency acknowledged the ongoing data review. "Given the complex nature of vaccine administration and data reporting in the United States, CDC has been actively working with partners at state and local levels to enhance the quality of vaccine data," the agency said.

[…] "We don't have any faith in the numbers on the CDC website, and we never refer to them," [James Garrow, a spokesman for the Philadelphia Department of Public Health] said.

[…] Last month, in one data change submitted to the CDC, the state government in Pennsylvania lowered its estimate for adults with at least one shot to 94.6% from 98.9%. The proportion of fully vaccinated older people also fell. Another data update is due by year's end.
