Saudi-Led Coalition Says It Has Destroyed Houthi Armed Drone

CAIRO (Reuters) - Yemen's Houthi movement said on Sunday it had attacked and hit a military air base in southern Saudi Arabia with a drone, but the Saudi-led coalition fighting the group said it had intercepted and destroyed an armed drone fired into the kingdom.

A Houthi military spokesman said on Twitter the group had targeted the King Khalid air base in Khamis Mushait with a drone.

There was no Saudi confirmation of any hit.

The military coalition led by Saudi Arabia, which intervened in Yemen against the Iran-aligned Houthis in 2015 after the Houthis captured the capital Sanaa, has said it intercepts the majority of Houthi missile and drone attacks.

The Houthi movement, which holds most of north Yemen, has kept up cross-border attacks on Saudi Arabia and a ground offensive in Yemen's Marib region at a time the United States and the United Nations are pushing for a ceasefire agreement.

Riyadh has proposed a truce, but the Houthis reject the offer, saying they want the full lifting of a sea and air blockade which allows the Saudi-led coalition to restrict imports into Yemen.

The conflict, seen in the region as a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, has killed tens of thousands of people and pushed millions to the brink of famine in what the United Nations calls the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Worrying new clues about the origins of Covid: How scientists at Wuhan lab helped Chinese army in secret project to find animal viruses (2/2)

The documents obtained by The Mail on Sunday detail a major project called 'the discovery of animal-delivered pathogens carried by wild animals', which set out to find organisms that could infect humans and investigate their evolution.

It was launched in 2012 and funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The project was led by Xu Jianguo, who boasted at a conference in 2019 that 'a giant network of infectious disease prevention and control is taking shape'.

The professor also headed the first expert group investigating Covid's emergence in Wuhan. He denied human transmission initially, despite evidence from hospitals, then insisted in mid-January 'this epidemic is limited and will end if there are no new cases next week'.

One review of his virus-hunting project admitted 'a large number of new viruses have been discovered, causing great concern in the international virology community'.

It added that if pathogens spread to humans and livestock, they could cause new infectious diseases 'posing a great threat to human health and life safety and may cause major economic losses, even affect social stability'.

An update in 2018 said that the scientific teams – who published many of their findings in international journals – had found four new pathogens and ten new bacteria while 'more than 1,640 new viruses were discovered using metagenomics technology'. Such research is based on extraction of genetic material from samples such as those collected by Prof Shi from bat faeces and blood in the cave networks of southern China.

Such extensive sampling led to Prof Shi's rapid revelation last year of RaTG13, the closest known relative to the new strain of coronavirus that causes Covid.

It was stored at the Wuhan lab, the biggest repository of bat coronaviruses in Asia.

It later emerged she changed its name from another virus identified in a previous paper, thus obscuring its link to three miners who died from a strange respiratory disease they caught clearing bat droppings.

Prof Shi also admitted that eight more unidentified SARS viruses had been collected in the mine. The institute took its database of virus samples offline in September 2019, just a few weeks before Covid cases exploded in Wuhan.

A comment was made on social media after Colonel Cao published a paper on a fatal tick bite, saying he and Prof Shi 'can always find a virus that has never been found in humans', adding: 'I suspect this is another so-called 'scientific research' made in the laboratory.'

In recent years, China's military has ramped up its hiring of scientists after President Xi Jinping said this was a key element in the nation's march for global supremacy.

Lianchao Han, a dissident who used to work for the Chinese government, said Cao's involvement raised suspicions that military researchers who are experts in coronaviruses might also be involved in bio-defence operations.

'Many have been working with Western research institutes for years to steal our know-hows but China still refuses to share critical information a year after the pandemic has killed over three million.'

David Asher, an expert on biological, chemical and nuclear proliferation, who led State Department inquiries into the origins of Covid-19, said: 'The Chinese have made it clear they see biotechnology as a big part of the future of hybrid warfare. The big question is whether their work in these fields is offensive or defensive.'

53 sailors presumed dead after sunken Indonesia submarine found

A scan detected the submarine at 850 metres deep – well beyond its survivable limits.

Indonesian officials say debris from a missing submarine was found after the vessel sank as hopes of rescuing 53 sailors on board faded on Saturday.

The items located included a bottle of lubricant and a device that protects a torpedo, Air Marshall Hadi Tjahjanto said.

“The objects found near the last location of the submarine are believed to be parts of the submarine,” he said. “These objects would have never got out of the submarine unless there was pressure.”

The submarine – one of five in Indonesia’s fleet – disappeared on Wednesday during live torpedo training exercises off the Indonesian holiday island of Bali.

Navy chief Yudo Margono said on Saturday that rescuers found several items, including parts of a torpedo straightener, a grease bottle believed to be used to oil the periscope, and prayer rugs from the submarine.

“With the authentic evidence we found believed to be from the submarine, we have now moved from the sub miss phase to sub sunk,” Margono said.

Indonesia earlier considered the submarine that disappeared off Bali as just missing. But now officials declared the submarine sank.

Colombo [Sri Lanka], April 24 (ANI): Former Sri Lankan Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen and brother Riyadh have been arrested by the country's Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for allegedly assisting the terrorists responsible for the deadly April 2019 bombing attacks, police spokesman Ajith Rohana said on Saturday.

According to Sputnik, earlier in the day, the ex-minister, who presently serves as a lawmaker, tweeted that the CID was standing outside of his house in Boudhaloka Mawatha, looking to arrest him "without a charge." Bathiudeen also mentioned having cooperated with the authorities so far.

"They were arrested by the CID on the charges of aiding and abetting the suicide bombers responsible for the 2019 April 21st attacks," Rohana said as quoted by Sri Lanka's News 1st outlet, reported by Sputnik.

The law enforcement agency had witness statements, as well as circumstantial and scientific evidence, at its disposal, according to the spokesman.

On April 21, 2019, Sri Lanka was hit by a series of deadly bombings that killed over 250 people, including 40 foreigners, and injured many more.

The Islamic State terrorist group has claimed the responsibility for the attacks. More than 100 people have been arrested in connection with the bombings.

US Government 'Has Acknowledged the Reality' of UFOs, Former Pentagon Official Says

The National UFO Reporting Centre claimed that 2020 saw at least 7,263 sightings of "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena" (UAP) in the US, as compared to 5,796 such objects detected the year before.

In an interview with the New York Post, Luis Elizondo, former head of the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Programme, gave his thoughts on a soon-to-be-released report by the US Department of Defence that will focus on UFOs, also referred to as "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena" (UAP) or "Anomalous Aerial Vehicles" (AAVs).

Described by the newspaper as a "noted whistleblower", Elizondo said that he thinks the report, due in June, comes at a time when "the [US] government has acknowledged the reality of UAP".

"I think they all want answers and I think they are all willing to ask the hard questions", he added.

According to the National UFO Reporting Centre, there were 46 such sightings in New York City last year, compared to 35 the previous year. Notably, the figure marked a 283% spike versus 2018, when just a dozen "UFO" sightings were detected.

Elizondo argued that senior US national security officials have been unwilling to release more UAP-related information to the public because "they felt that it made them look inept".

"They felt in some cases that it challenged their philosophical and theological belief systems […]. They just couldn't process it", the whistleblower claimed.

He also suggested that growing "UAP" activity might be linked to the development of nuclear technology in the US.

"That's concerning to the point where we've actually had some of our nuclear capabilities disabled by these things […]. There is absolutely evidence that UAPs have an active interest in our nuclear technology", Elizondo asserted.

The remarks followed Elizondo's press conference earlier this week, where he described UAPs as objects that are ostensibly capable of flying 50 feet above the Earth's surface or 80,000 feet high in the sky.

"When you see that, you recognise you are dealing with a technology more advanced than ours", the whistleblower said, also referring to their alleged capability to submerge underwater without a compromise in performance.

He spoke after US media reports said last week that Pentagon-confirmed imagery featuring "pyramid-shaped" UFOs, as well as other such objects resembling a "sphere" and an "acorn", will be deciphered as part of "ongoing investigations" into UAPs.

The sightings include an 18-second video of what looks like three "pyramid-shaped" craft hovering over the USS Russell in July 2019 as well as images of three other mysterious objects, one of which was reportedly shared online last year.

Department of Defence (DOD) spokesperson Susan Gough said that she "can confirm that the referenced photos and videos were taken by [US] Navy personnel".

At the same time, she underscored that the Pentagon would not publicly discuss the matter "to maintain operations security and to avoid disclosing information that may be useful to potential adversaries".

Tributes pour in for Milva, beloved Italian singer, who has died aged 81: 'Milva the Red' was beloved by fans across the world

In announcing her death, Italy’s Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said Milva’s versatile voice “stirred deep emotions in entire generations". No cause of death was given.

Milva also starred as a stage actress, with a repertoire heavily based on the works of German playwright Bertolt Brecht. She often worked with Milan theatre director Giorgio Strehler, who directed her in one of Brecht's signature works, The Threepenny Opera, a musical drama.

Who was Milva?

Born in 1939 as Maria Ilva Biolcati in Goro, a Po River delta town, she adopted the one-word stage name Milva. Along with Italian singers Ornella Vanoni and Mina, another performer who used a first name only, Milva was considered one of the greatest Italian popular female singers.

Milva sold some 80 million records, the LaPresse news agency said, and recorded 173 albums. She was nicknamed “Milva the Red”, for her voluminous red hair as well as “the Panther of Goro” for her vitality.

Germany, France and Italy all honoured her with national awards. Milva also had a following of fans in Asia, particularly in South Korea. She appeared 15 times at the San Remo festival, the annual contest to promote Italian songs, joking after her 12th time that she never would win.

One of her hits was the song Alexander Platz. Composed by Italian songwriter Franco Battiato in 1982, it explored love in divided Berlin during Cold War times, with its name taken from the famous Berlin square Alexanderplatz.

Other top Italian songwriters whose works Milva sang included Luigi Tenco and Fabrizio De Andre.

'An artist all heart and voice'

Italian President Sergio Mattarella on Saturday praised Milva as a “cultured, sensitive and versatile interpreter, much appreciated abroad”. He extended his condolences to her family.

Milva, who announced her retirement in 2010 after more than a half-century of performing, lived in Milan with a daughter, Martina Corgnati. The singer's former husband, Maurizio Corgnati, was a TV director who died in 1992.

Music critic Mario Luzzatto Fegiz wrote in Corriere della Sera that among Milva's many talents was the uncanny ability to sing just about any kind of music in any language after listening to it just once.

“She worked by memory,” Luzzatto Fegiz recalled. “In German, she wasn't even able to order breakfast.”

Milan's Piccolo Theater Strehler said it would host a wake on Tuesday in its foyer and that Milva's funeral to follow will be private. In a Facebook post, the theatre paid tribute to her, saying she was an “indominable, sensitive, passionate woman, an artist all heart and voice”.

Dozens killed in oxygen tank blast at Baghdad hospital: Casualties still being assessed after fire caused by the explosion was put out on Sunday morning

Dozens of people were killed when oxygen tank exploded late on Saturday at a hospital treating Covid-19 patients on the outskirts of Baghdad, Iraqi security and health officials said.

The explosion caused a fire in the pulmonary intensive care unit on the second floor of the Ibn Al Khateeb hospital in Jisr Diyala district, the head of the Iraqi Civil Defence said.

“Elderly and [coronavirus] patients were on pulmonary devices and that made it impossible for them to move,” Maj Gen Kadhim Bohan told state-run TV as firefighters battled flames behind him.

“The inferno and the smoke led to fatalities and injuries among them.”

Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhimi announced a three-day mourning period for the victims and ordered an investigation into the blast.

Casualty numbers were still being assessed after the fire was extinguished early on Sunday morning, but security and health officials said dozens were killed and wounded. Health officials said there were between 200 and 300 patients in the hospital.

Maj Gen Bohan blamed the absence of safety standards in the three-storey building.

“Unfortunately, there were no protection teams, no fire extinguishers and no fire-detection systems,” he said. The flammable material of the false ceiling, the official said, made the situation worse.

Videos and pictures of the scene showed hundreds of firefighters and residents of the area trying to put out the fire and rescue patients. Patients’ relatives were seen crying hysterically and beating their heads and chests in grief.

The prime minister described the incident as a “setback” and blamed negligence. Authorities will investigate the director of the hospital, the heads of security and maintenance, and other officials, Mr Al Kadhimi said.

The prime minister's official Twitter account said he ordered safety inspections to be conducted on all medical facilities within a week.

It is still unclear what caused the oxygen tank to explode, but a medical worker at the hospital blamed a patient's relative for using a heater next to it.

The incident sparked calls on social media for the sacking of the Health Minister, Hassan Al Tamimi, and anger over inefficiency and corruption in the country.

“Everything in Iraq can explode in your face and kill you, even the oxygen tank that is supposed to help you breathe,” activist Omar Al Janai wrote on Twitter.

“Corruption has gnawed the state and the only victim is the people,” he added.

"Not only coronavirus is killing us, we are being killed by the corruption and inefficiency of successive Iraqi governments," said another Twitter user.

Iraq's semi-official Independent Human Rights Commission said the incident “is a crime against patients exhausted by Covid-19 who put their lives in the hands of the health ministry and its institutions and instead of being treated, perished in flames".

Iraqi hospitals have been battered by decades of war, sanctions and corruption. The pandemic has put the country’s healthcare system on the brink of collapse with acute shortage of medical staff and equipment.

Much of Iraq’s health infrastructure was built during 1970s and 1980s. Most medicines and medical supplies are only available on the black market and medical staff are dying from Covid-19 because of a lack of protection.

Many coronavirus patients prefer not to go to crowded hospitals and receive treatment at home.

Iraq is in a new wave of the pandemic that pushed the number of Covid-19 cases past one million on Wednesday. Friday, during an appearance on FNC’s “Fox News Primetime,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) criticized federal government officials, including National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci and President Joe Biden, for the promotion and justification of continued mask-wearing by the public, even in private situations.

Paul questioned the efficacy of fully vaccinated individuals wearing a mask and suggested the mask push could harm efforts to encourage vaccinations if the public does believe the vaccine has an impact on protecting against the COVID-19 virus.

Stephen Miller’s America First Legal Is the ‘Conservative Response to the ACLU’

Stephen Miller, senior adviser to former President Trump, discussed his new group America First Legal, which he described as the “conservative response to the ACLU” during an appearance on Breitbart News Saturday, warning that conservatives will never be able to “meaningfully enact conservative and traditional policies” until they start fighting back against radical leftist policies in the courts.

Miller is president of America First Legal, a group designed to fight back against the left’s lawless actions — particularly those of the Biden administration.

“For the last four years — and this has been decades in the making — the left has truly perfected the art of lawfare,” Miller told Breitbart News Washington Political editor and Breitbart News Saturday host Matthew Boyle.

Miller explained how virtually everything the Trump administration did was “relentlessly litigated” by “activist left-wing lawyers, activist left-wing groups, and then brought into the courtrooms of activist left-wing judges.”

From a practical standpoint, Miller said, something that would have taken a previous administration a week to do with executive action took Trump’s administration months and, in some cases, years. He used DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) as a primary example, noting that former President Obama did not face any significant legal challenges after issuing the memo in 2012. Trump, however, issued a memo to rescind the unlawful policy in 2017, but it remained in court for four years.

“Imagine how different history would have been if either, A) Obama had spent four years in court and was never able to implement this memo or, B) Trump had been able to rescind it in a matter of days. That’s just one of a million examples,” Miller said. “The point being, as conservatives, we have been guilty of unilateral legal disarmament.”

“And we have a situation where, if you have a president who’s politically to the left, he has a free runway to implement illegal, unconstitutional policies. If you have a president who’s politically to the right, then you don’t even have the ability to terminate your predecessor’s unlawful policies, and that fundamentally threatens our democracy because it means that some presidents have more authority than other presidents,” he explained.

That is why he launched America First Legal, which he described as a nonpartisan organization devoted to upholding America First principles, conservative values, and traditional American ideals in the court of law. The group plans to file lawsuits to uphold those principles when the Biden administration “lawlessly violates them,” Miller said, explaining the focus will remain on “executive overreach.”

“I’m doing this solely because it has to be done. This is, in short, the conservative response to the ACLU,” Miller said.

Boyle noted the right has “never had anything like this before,” and Miller explained that the group is actively consulting and advising with a number of GOP, conservative-led states and attorneys general who are litigating to stop the behavior from the administration that is both unlawful and unconstitutional.

Specifically, America First Legal is formally acting as outside counsel in a lawsuit against the Biden administration’s Catch and Release policy, representing Texas.

2 liberal profs face punishment for attack on conservative

Two liberal professors at Tennessee Tech are facing disciplinary action after they publicly attacked another professor because of his political views.

The university publication, The Oracle, reported Julie Gruber, who teaches German, and Andrew Smith, who teaches English and religion, violated the university's Code of Conduct by distributing a flyer in a public campaign against Andrew Donadio of the nursing school.

Donadio filed a complaint with the university's Office of Human Resources after Gruber and Smith distributed the flyer on campus.

The flyer stated: "This racist college professor thought it would be a great idea to help start a Tennessee Tech chapter for this national hate group, where racist students can unite to harass, threaten, intimidate, and terrorize persons of color, feminists, liberals, and the like, especially [sic] their teachers. Their organization created a national 'Professor Watchlist' to harass and intimidate progressive educators, including many women, African-American, and Muslim professors.

"Professor Donadio and Turning Point USA. You are on our list. Your hate & hypocrisy are not welcome at Tennessee Tech. No Unity With Racists. Hate Speech Is Not Free Speech."

A memo from the administration determined the flyer "was intended to harass, intimidate, and threaten not only Donadio but other faculty, staff, and students whose views and opinions were contrary to those held by Smith and Gruber."

The report said it was unclear what disciplinary action the two would face.

"According to Tech Policy 651, Disciplinary Actions, that while Tech may decide to use corrective action, it reserves the right in cases where the offense merits termination or other sanctions to impose such sanction(s) in the first instance without following a course of corrective action."

Constitutional expert and George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley said it "appears that this mess all started because Donadio applauded a bit too loudly at a meeting of the Putnam County School Board."

"Seriously. According to sites like Inside Higher Education, Gruber (as associate professor of German) was present at the meeting considering a demand to change the name of the Algood Middle School Redskins. The board rejected the proposal and Donadio, an assistant professor of nursing at Tennessee Tech as well as a local county commissioner, applauded loudly," Turley wrote.

"What he did not know was that Gruber was sitting in front of him and found his applauding excessive and offensive. Gruber then contacted Smith, a professor of English at Tennessee Tech. Smith had a gripe with Donadio over his serving as the adviser for Turning Point U.S.A. The conservative group is often the target of liberal professors and activists because it maintains a Professor Watchlist that tracks faculty who express 'radical' or biased remarks in class. The group insists that it is seeking to not only expose such bias but to allow students to avoid such classes. Smith and Gruber distributed a menacing-looking flyer of Donadio on a chair of knives (ala The Game of Thrones) that accused him of 'hate speech' and being a racist. There is no evidence to support either claim."

Turley said it's "hard to defend the conduct of Smith and Gruber, who clearly sought to harass a colleague for his political views."

"They embody the intolerance for opposing views that is destroying higher education and free speech. Turning Point is a recognized student group on campus that Smith and Gruber were seeking to demonize and label a racist. The obvious intent is to make it more difficult for students and faculty to support the group."

But Smith and Gruber were engaged in free speech and were "entitled to speak out against a colleague," he said.

But they "insist that the flyer’s reference to the list was meant to model the listing by Turning Point."

"I do not see the reference as a credible threat," Turley wrote.

"The actions of Smith and Gruber were in my view reprehensible in labeling a colleague as a racist who engages in hate speech. It was unfair and unsupported. If it were true, Smith and Gruber could have filed a complaint with the university. They could also have written or spoken against his views rather than anonymously spread rumors or allegations. They lacked the integrity or the courage to do either."

He said the professors' actions are "worthy of condemnation and a possible official reprimand." But there probably should be no further penalties unless they repeat their conduct.

Biden nominee for DOJ post pushed essay comparing cops to KKK

President Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Justice Department’s civil rights division circulated an essay from self-proclaimed Marxist poet Amiri Baraka defending cop killer Mumia Abu-Jamal and referring to police officers as members of the Ku Klux Klan, according an email from her days at Columbia University.

Kristen Clarke forwarded the Baraka essay in an email on June 25, 1999, to her mentor, the late historian Manning Marable.

She suggested that the essay, entitled “Mumia, ‘Lynch Law’ & Imperialism” be placed in a magazine Marable edited and used for a panel on the death penalty.

“Here is a piece for the magazine & the panel 3 Race and The Death Penalty,” Clarke wrote to Marable.

The email was obtained by the American Accountability Foundation, a conservative advocacy group founded by two former Republican Senate staffers. The foundation, which has published other materials about Clarke on its website, BidenNoms.com, says that the email is from Marable’s academic archives at Columbia University.

Clarke studied under Marable at the time she sent the email. She contributed to a journal on black studies that Marable founded and helped the historian organize academic conferences for his Institute for Research in African-American Studies.

The American Accountability Foundation has published other documents showing that Clarke helped organize a conference with Marable in 1999 where Mumia Abu-Jamal, Assata Shakur and other convicted cop killers were hailed as “political prisoners.”

Clarke testified at her Senate confirmation hearing last week that she was unfamiliar with the Abu-Jamal and Shakur cases and that she only provided logistics for Marable’s conference.

“I am not familiar with their cases, I’ve never worked on those matters,” Clarke said in her confirmation hearing.

“I was not the organizer of that conference, but I provided logistical support as a student at that time.”

Clarke’s handling of Baraka’s article about Abu-Jamal suggests she had some familiarity with the convicted murderer’s case. It also suggests that she thought the material was acceptable for publication in a journal and for use at an academic conference.

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz responded to the document posted by the American Accountability Foundation, saying it shows that Clarke is a “radical” nominee.

“I’ve been sounding the alarm about just how radical Biden’s pick for DOJ Kristen Clarke is,” he tweeted.

In his essay, Baraka said that police officers and judges are the modern equivalent of the Ku Klux Klan.

“The Klan is now the Police, with Blue uniforms replacing the sheets and hoods. The corrupt racist Judges, are petty Klan administrators,” Baraka wrote in the essay.

He also asserted that Abu-Jamal was “being held hostage.”

“Mountains of evidence and testimony show clearly that Mumia is another Black scapegoat, another Lynch victim.”

“The rulers want to show us what will happen if we mobilize and mount full scale attack on Imperialism as Mumia did as part of the Black Panther party as a sector of The Black Liberation Movement,” Baraka also wrote in the essay shared by Clarke.

Abu-Jamal, a former Black Panther, was sentenced to death row in 1982 for the murder of Daniel Faulkner, a Philadelphia police officer.

His case became a cause célèbre for left-wing activists who believe he was unfairly convicted.

Baraka, who died in 2014, had a lengthy history of making anti-white, anti-Semitic and homophobic statements. Most American white men are trained to be fags,” he wrote in a 1965 essay. “Smile, jew. Dance, jew. Tell me you love me, jew,” Baraka wrote in one poem cited by The New York Times in his obituary. “I got the extermination blues, jewboys. In 2019, Clarke criticized the Chicago police department for seeking access to the cell phone of actor Jussie Smollett, who claimed he was attacked by two white Trump supporters.
