Iran announces arrest of ‘Israeli spy’ & others with links to ‘several countries’

Iran claims it has arrested a number of agents of foreign intelligence services, including an “Israeli spy”, in the northwest of the Islamic republic.

The alleged Israeli intelligence agent was nabbed in the province of East Azarbaijan, Iranian media reported on Monday citing the regional head of the Iranian Intelligence Ministry.

“An Israeli spy and several other spies with ties to the security services of various countries have been arrested,” the official, who was not named in the reports, said.

The claim was made during a report about the law-enforcement activities and other aspects of the branch’s operations. The identities of alleged spies were not disclosed and it was not clear if the one that Iran linked to Israel was an Israeli citizen.

Israeli authorities would not immediately comment on the media reports.

Israel and Iran have a long history of hostilities. Several high-profile crimes that happened in Iran have been blamed on Israeli intelligence services, including last year’s assassination of top nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh.

Iran arrests Israeli spy, other spies in contact with several countries in East Azarbaijan Province

An official with Iran's Intelligence Ministry says an Israeli spy and a number of other spies tied to security services of different countries have been arrested in the northwestern Iranian province of East Azarbaijan.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the director general of East Azarbaijan's provincial intelligence department, said no member of any Takfiri terrorist group is present in the province.

The official, however, did not give any further information about the number of those arrested or their nationalities.

Back in August 2020, Iranian intelligence forces identified and arrested a number of spies linked to foreign espionage services.

The deputy head of the Intelligence Ministry’s counter-espionage department announced at the time that five teams of spies had been dismantled in the process, describing the arrests as the latest in a series of blows dealt to the global “hegemonic system.”

The official said foreign intelligence officers, using various complex methods, were attempting to spy on Iran’s nuclear, political, economic, military and infrastructural projects.

They were operating under the auspices of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Israeli spy agency Mossad, and those of some European countries involved in recent espionage cases and intended to conduct acts of sabotage in Iran, intensify cruel sanctions against the country, prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring modern know-how and damage Tehran’s relations with friendly states, the official noted.

Turkey arrests 10 retired admirals who voiced security fears over Erdogan’s straits project

Turkish police have arrested 10 retired admirals, who among over 100 ex-navy officers, voiced concerns that the ambitious plan to dig a new canal between the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara would endanger the country.

Four other individuals were ordered to report to the Ankara chief prosecutor within three days as part of the investigation of an alleged attempt to commit crimes “against national security and the constitutional order,” Turkish news agency Anadolu said.

The arrests and summonses on Monday came due to an open letter signed by former high-ranking personnel of the Turkish Navy. Published on Sunday, it raises concerns over the suggestion that Turkey could abandon the 1936 Montreux Convention, a cornerstone international treaty that governs Turkey’s sovereignty over two straits connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea, and the inland Sea of Marmara in between. Turkish authorities reacted to the letter with anger, saying it invoked the numerous military coups the country has experienced in modern history and is thus a threat to the civilian government.

At the core of the issue is the Istanbul Canal, a 50km-long waterway that would run parallel to the Bosporus and help deal with the heavy maritime traffic through the straits. It is one of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s projects meant to reshape Turkey with heavy investment in infrastructure. Erdogan first unveiled the project in 2011 during his election campaign, calling it a “crazy project.”

Critics fear that the new man-made waterway, not covered by the Montreux Convention, would potentially lead to a confrontation between major naval nations. The treaty allows free passage of civilian ships through the straits but limits the tonnage and number of military vessels of non-Black Sea countries.

Erdogan stated that the Montreux Convention would not apply to traffic through the new canal once it’s finished, which led to speculation that Turkey may withdraw from the treaty altogether.

The letter signed by retired naval officers expressed concern that there is even a debate regarding the move, saying the convention is crucial to national security and that without it, the country could face grave threats.

The warning triggered outrage from the Turkish government, with Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin saying it was “reminiscent of coup times” and made the signatories look “ridiculous and pathetic.”

“They should know that our esteemed nation and its representatives will never allow this mentality and enthusiasm for [military] tutelage,” he tweeted.

The Turkish military, which has historically played the role of guarantor of the country’s secular constitution, staged three successful coups between 1960 and 1980. In 1997, a ‘military memorandum’ forced the resignation of Islamist Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan. In 2016, there was a failed coup against Erdogan which left scores of people killed and led to a purge in Turkey’s security apparatus.

Concerns about the Montreux Convention were expressed in a similar open letter last year by retired Turkish diplomats. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said at the time that the canal project will not compromise the treaty.

US Supreme Court rules in favor of Google in largest-ever programming copyright case

SCOTUS has ruled that tech giant Google did not violate copyright law by reusing some 11,330 lines of code and other elements of fellow Big Tech player Oracle’s Java platform to build its wildly popular Android OS.

The $8 billion copyright case against Google landed heavily in the tech giant’s favor on Monday, with six judges finding in favor of the company and just two dissenting in support of Oracle.

Google had argued its reuse of the code in question was in line with “long-settled, common practice[s] in the industry,” insisting there is no copyright protection governing “purely functional, noncreative computer code” of the sort it lifted from Oracle to build Android in 2007.

In evaluating the case, Justice Stephen Breyer described how “for argument’s sake,” the court acted as if “the material was copyrightable,” noting that its conclusions ultimately did not change because the “copying here at issue nonetheless constituted a fair use. Hence, Google's copying did not violate the copyright law.”

Breyer was joined in his 62-page opinion by members of the court’s liberal wing, as well as Justices Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Chief Justice John Roberts. The case was heard in October by just eight justices, as Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had recently died and Justice Amy Coney Barrett had not yet been confirmed to the court.

“Oracle’s code at issue here is copyrightable, and Google’s use of that copyrighted code was anything but fair,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in his dissenting opinion, joined by Justice Samuel Alito.

The case represented the largest Supreme Court case regarding programming copyright in US history. The lawsuit has been underway for a shocking 10 years. Big Tech firms like Microsoft and IBM reportedly sympathized with Google, while the more copyright-minded – including the Motion Picture Association of America and the Recording Industry Association of America – favored Oracle in the dispute.

Google released Android in 2007, and the software has risen to become the most popular smartphone operating system in the world.

However, Oracle insisted the megacorporation had illegally copied 37 Java application programming interfaces (APIs) to be used as the framework for its operating system – a charge Google rejected, claiming APIs were “like an alphabet or a grammar” and thus couldn’t be copyrighted.

Since the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, former President Donald Trump and his Republican allies have pushed false and misleading accounts to downplay the event that left five dead and scores of others wounded. His supporters appear to have listened.

Three months after a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol to try to overturn his November election loss, about half of Republicans believe the siege was largely a non-violent protest or was the handiwork of left-wing activists “trying to make Trump look bad,” a new Reuters/Ipsos poll has found.

Six in 10 Republicans also believe the false claim put out by Trump that November’s presidential election “was stolen” from him due to widespread voter fraud, and the same proportion of Republicans think he should run again in 2024, the March 30-31 poll showed.

Dozens of wealthy nobles have applied for aid that was intended to help struggling businesses survive the lockdowns during the coronavirus pandemic, a media report says.

The government’s popular job retention programme allows businesses to apply for grants that cover the majority of wages for workers they were forced to furlough during the lockdown.

A least 50 nobles, including dukes, earls, viscounts, and marquesses, have asked for financial aid under the scheme, the Guardian reported on Monday, citing public records. The list is said to include owners of lavish inherited estates, castles, tens of thousands of acres of land, and expensive art collections, as well as hereditary peers already paid by taxpayers to sit in the House of Lords.

The Duke and Duchess of Rutland made four claims of up to £10,000 in December, rising to between £10,000 and £25,000 in January. They are now divorced and live in separate parts of the duke’s ancestral home, the majestic Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, which was recently featured in ‘The Crown’, a TV series about the British royals.

The Rutlands also claimed up to £55,000 for a cafe and a clothes shop they own. The media estimated the duke’s fortune at £125 million in 2013.

Among other claimants was the Viscount of Cowdray, who owns a 16,500-acre park estate with a golf course and a polo club that was frequented by Prince Charles. Another aristocrat, the Earl of Dalhousie, received up to £100,000 in January for a company that operates Brechin Castle in Scotland.

Some aristocrats told the paper they were eligible to benefit from the programme just like everyone else. As has been the case with similar revelations in the past, the news of wealthy aristocrats receiving government aid ruffled some feathers in Parliament. Labour Party MP Olivia Blake said that the furlough scheme was meant to “be a lifeline for businesses hit hardest by the pandemic,” and it should be checked if the money “has gone to those who really need it.”

In February, the Daily Mirror reported that a total of £455,000 was claimed in December for firms linked to four dukes whose combined personal wealth was estimated at £1.5 billion. On March 19, 2021, Border Patrol agents arrested eight subjects near Mission, Texas. Agents discovered one Honduran in the group had a prior arrest by the Suffolk County Police Department in New York in 2007.

The Honduran was charged with rape and forcible compulsion and course of sexual conduct against a child. He was sentenced to nine years in prison.

Two days earlier, Border Patrol agents working near Falfurrias, Texas, arrested a Mexican national with a prior arrest in 2015 for rape by the Sandy Springs Police Department in Georgia. In that case, the man was convicted and sentenced to 20 years confinement, of which he served five.

CBP reports demonstrate that Fiscal Year 2021 is on pace to double the number of sex offenders apprehended, compared to the year prior in southern California. The San Diego Sector began tracking the annual apprehension of sex offenders in 2019.

Although only a small percentage of the migrants illegally entering the country have extensive criminal backgrounds, the source is concerned that many are eluding apprehension. As Border Patrol struggles to process and provide humanitarian care for the latest surge, fewer agents are on normal duty.

The number of migrants avoiding apprehension by Border Patrol exceeded 130,000 during the last six months.
