China is once again rattling its saber at Taiwan. This past weekend, Beijing repeatedly sent fighter jets and bombers across the so-called median line, which has long served to unofficially demarcate Chinese and Taiwanese airspace over the Taiwan Strait. Chinese leaders were ostensibly reacting to U.S. Undersecretary of State Keith Krach’s trip to the Taiwanese capital, a move that Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs held up as a symbol of the growing relationship between Washington and Taipei. Yet China’s hard-line Global Times hinted at an even more unsettling motive. It called the exercise a dress rehearsal that showed the speed with which China could strike Taiwan if it so chose.

Regardless of the specific message Chinese leaders wanted to send, Taipei and Washington will see the move as yet another indicator that Beijing is considering military action to bring the island under its control. Indeed, Friday’s “exercise” is just the latest example of Beijing’s increasingly bellicose rhetoric, policies, and actions at home and abroad.

From Capability to Resolve

In recent years, a consensus emerged among military experts that the best way for Taiwan to offset China’s growing military advantages is to heavily invest in asymmetric weapons, such as anti-ship missiles, air defenses, and drones. They argue that Taiwan cannot afford to buy enough “traditional” weapons — platforms like surface ships and advanced fighter jets — to keep up with the Chinese military. However, by using its limited resources to acquire large numbers of relatively inexpensive weapons, Taiwan could make it more costly for China to project power across the Taiwan Strait and harder for China to achieve a quick military victory.

Last week’s proposed arms deal shows that Taiwan is serious about improving its defensive capabilities. By buying the sorts of asymmetric weapons included in this package (e.g., coastal defense missiles and mines) instead of flashier, high-profile platforms like main battle tanks or advanced fighter jets, President Tsai Ing-wen is making it clear that the country is serious about addressing the island’s actual security needs.

Acquiring the “right” military capabilities to defend against Chinese aggression represents an essential first step. The next step should involve strengthening Taiwanese resolve. After all, even the best weapons in the world will not make a difference if the people are not willing to fight.

Unfortunately, recent public opinion surveys suggest that many in Taiwan do not yet take the risk of a war with China seriously. In early August, a poll commissioned by the Chinese Association for Public Opinion Research found that only 20 percent of the Taiwanese public believed a military confrontation over Taiwan’s status might happen. It also revealed that less than half of those polled would be willing to fight if such a war did happen.

Military flyby rehearsal staged over Taipei

Taipei, Sept. 24 (CNA) A large number of helicopters and fighter jets, including F-16Vs, flew over Taipei as part of a rehearsal for the National Day Parade flyby on Thursday.

One UH60-M and two CH-47 helicopters, as well as three F-16V fighter jets and three AT-3 jet trainers, were seen over the Presidential Office during the flyby rehearsal for the upcoming Double Tenth National Day celebrations.

The scenes sparked rumors China had launched an invasion of Taiwan that quickly spread on the internet.

However, Deputy Minister of the Interior Chen Tsung-yen (陳宗彥), who is also secretary-general of the National Day Celebration Committee, dismissed the rumors, saying the flyby was part of National Day celebration rehearsals and no reason to panic.

The military will continue to hold rehearsals prior to the Oct. 10 National Day, on Sept. 27, Sept. 29, Oct. 6 and Oct. 8, with even larger flybys to be staged on Sept. 29 and Oct. 6, according to Chen.

The path into the parallel world follows rural roads snaking through the hills of Baden-Wurttemberg to a house located on the edge of a village with a bright white façade, well-swept driveway and carefully trimmed lawn. The conspiracy has long since eaten its way into the southern German idyll. A friendly man opens the door - muscular, burly, he does a lot of lifting.

It was not easy to set up a meeting. He has a deep aversion to journalists and other members of a supposed elite, whom he believes are covering up a worldwide plot to oppress humanity. Over the phone, he said that he hopes to open the reporter’s eyes. "Maybe I can wake you up.” He requested that his real name not be used, so we'll call him Martin Schmidt.

"The goal of the elites is to stay powerful, to stay rich and to enslave the world,” he says.

Schmidt is 27, works as an electrician and has been living with his parents again since the beginning of the pandemic. He leads the way into the living room, with its bright tile floor and woodchip wallpaper, and says he has been thinking about the big questions for a long time. The death of John F. Kennedy, the attacks of September 11, the coronavirus pandemic: He believes they have all been faked as part of a giant plan.

His father nods next to him. He also believes people are being systematically deceived by politicians and members of the media. Schmidt says: "This elite, they are various men and women who work on Wall Street, to whom the banks belong, all these people.” He believes businesspeople like George Soros, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg are among them, as well as the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds.

He takes out his smartphone. "I’ll show you how the rich and beautiful party.” He shows a photo of performance artist Marina Abramović with the singer Lady Gaga at a charity event. In the picture, they are standing next to a naked female body covered with a red liquid. For Schmidt, the photo is proof of how morally degenerate the leaders of society have become, and that even the so-called elite aren’t afraid of killing people - even if, in this case, the photo is of an art performance. He says the situation is alarming. "I have awoken.”

Martin Schmidt is part of a growing number of QAnon sympathizers, one of tens of thousands in Germany. Followers of this right-wing conspiracy theory are convinced that an influential group of Satanist pedophiles is kidnapping boys and girls and using their blood to produce a drug. They believe that the coronavirus was developed in a Chinese lab – possibly with the help of Barack Obama – in order to hurt Donald Trump and prevent his reelection, a claim that is as absurd as it is false. And they believe Donald Trump is a hero fighting against the "deep state,” and that he wants to protect the world from the demonic group.

"He is trying to save humanity,” says Schmidt. "He will take away the elites’ power.”

It turns out that Mr. Durham also focused attention on certain political enemies of Mr. Trump: the Clintons.

Mr. Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut assigned by Mr. Barr to review the Russia inquiry, has sought documents and interviews about how federal law enforcement officials handled an investigation around the same time into allegations of political corruption at the Clinton Foundation, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mr. Durham’s team members have suggested to others that they are comparing the two investigations as well as examining whether investigators in the Russia inquiry flouted laws or policies. It was not clear whether Mr. Durham’s investigators were similarly looking for violations in the Clinton Foundation investigation, nor whether the comparison would be included or play a major role in the outcome of Mr. Durham’s inquiry.

The approach is highly unusual, according to people briefed on the investigation. Though the suspected crimes themselves are not comparable — one involves a possible conspiracy between a presidential campaign and a foreign adversary to interfere in an election, and the other involves potential bribery and corruption — and largely included different teams of investigators and prosecutors, Mr. Durham’s efforts suggest the scope of his review is broader than previously known.

“The Clinton Foundation has regularly been subjected to baseless, politically motivated allegations, and time after time these allegations have been proven false,” the foundation said in a statement.

Right-wing news media and prominent Republicans have long promoted a narrative that the F.B.I.’s leadership and the Justice Department under the Obama administration were biased in favor of Hillary Clinton. They have accused agents and prosecutors of aggressively investigating Mr. Trump and his associates — ignoring evidence to the contrary — while moving more cautiously on allegations of corruption at the Clinton Foundation and Mrs. Clinton’s use of a private email server to conduct government business while she was secretary of state.

“There was a clear double standard by the Department of Justice and F.B.I. when it came to the Trump and Clinton campaigns in 2016,” said Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a staunch supporter of Mr. Trump.

In the Russia investigation, F.B.I. officials did take aggressive steps such as obtaining a secret wiretap to eavesdrop on a former Trump adviser. But they also moved quietly, deploying informants and an undercover agent in part to keep the existence of the investigation from becoming public and affecting the 2016 election.

'This wasn't a random act of violence' authorities said.

A 4-year-old boy was killed and four others were wounded when a gunman barged into an Ohio home early Monday and opened fire, authorities said.

The boy, identified as Rowan Sweeney, died in his mother's arms, Struthers Police Chief Tim Roddy said at a news conference. The shooting occurred at 2 a.m. in a two-story home located near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border.

Roddy said investigators believe the residence was targeted.

"This wasn't a random act of violence," he said.

Speaking with reporters, the child's father, David Sweeney, begged the shooter to turn themself in.

"Just be a man," an emotional Sweeney said while holding a photo of his son. "You took my son from me. He was my baby boy. You took him because you're sick."

Authorities believe an intruder entered the home through the front door and opened fire in the living room. He fled on foot immediately after.

The other victims were identified as Andre Stephon McCoy, 20, Yarnell Green Jr., 30 both of Youngstown, Cassandra Marsicola, 20, of Campbell and 22-year-old Alexis Schneider, the child's mother.

One man was shot twice in the back of the head and the other was hit twice in the back, Roddy said. The women sustained wounds to the legs. Roddy described the two women as friends and that they were cooperating with investigators.

He was not sure of the relationship they had with the two men. All four remain hospitalized. The two men were listed in critical condition and the females were listed as stable, Roddy said.

He said investigators have gone through the victim's cell phones and have turned up potential leads.

"Some of the ones that we went through have provided links to people that we need to talk too," he said.

No arrests have been made. On a 911 audio recording, a woman is heard screaming and pleading for help.

"My son is dead," she is heard saying, WFMJ-TV reported.

Neighbors reported hearing five to eight gunshots but did not see the suspect. Authorities responded to the home last week for a drug overdose involving one of the victims, Roddy told reporters.

China, South Korea, Taiwan join search for Filipino crew of

sunken cattle ship

MANILA, Philippines —The governments of China, South Korea, and Taiwan have joined the search for 36 still missing Filipino seafarers and other crew members of the cattle ship Gulf Livestock 1 that capsized off Japan early this month, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said.

In a statement Thursday, DOLE said Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III has written letters to the three countries’ ambassadors in the Philippines to ask for assistance in the search and rescue operations for the missing crew.

Gulf Livestock 1 which went missing and reported to have capsized last September 3 in the East China Sea on its way to China from New Zealand due to Typhoon Maysak, carried 43 crew members — 39 of whom are from the Philippines, two from New Zealand, and two from Australia.

The Japanese Coast Guard has so far rescued two Filipinos while the body of another Filipino was retrieved.

The Department of Foreign Affairs earlier said Japanese rescuers have decided to transition from a “full-time” search operations to its usual sea patrol as no trace of the sunken Panamanian-flagged vessel has been found since September 5.

“Don’t give up on your loved ones because there’s really hope. Three foreign governments are helping us find them,” Bello told the families of the missing Filipino sailors in a meeting in Manila Wednesday afternoon.

During the said meeting, Bello informed the relatives of the “renewed search and rescue operations being conducted by the states of China, Taiwan, and South Korea,” according to DOLE.

Calspan Corporation is a science and technology company founded in 1943 as part of the Research Laboratory of the Curtiss-Wright Airplane Division at Buffalo, New York. Calspan consists of four primary operating units: Flight Research, Transportation Research, Aerospace Sciences [Transonic Wind Tunnel], and Crash Investigations. The company's main facility is in Cheektowaga, New York, while it has other facilities such as the Flight Research Center in Niagara Falls, New York, and remote flight test operations at Edwards Air Force Base, California, and Patuxent River, Maryland. Calspan also has thirteen field offices throughout the Eastern United States which perform accident investigations on behalf of the United States Department of Transportation.

History

The facility was started as a private defense contractor in the home front of World War II. As a part of its tax planning in the wake of the war effort, Curtiss-Wright donated the facility to Cornell University to operate "as a public trust" and received a charitable tax deduction.[1] Seven other east coast aircraft companies also donated $675,000 to provide working capital for the lab.[2]

The lab operated under the name Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory from 1946 until 1972. During this same time, Cornell formed a new Graduate School of Aerospace Engineering on its Ithaca, New York campus. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, universities came under criticism for conducting war-related research particularly as the Vietnam War became unpopular, and Cornell University tried to sever its ties. Similar laboratories at other colleges, such as the Lincoln Laboratory and Draper Laboratory at MIT came under similar criticism, but some labs, such as Lincoln, retained their collegiate ties. Cornell accepted a $25 million offer from EDP Technology, Inc. to purchase the lab in 1968.[3] However, a group of lab employees who had made a competing $15 million offer organized a lawsuit to block the sale. In May 1971, New York's highest court ruled that Cornell had the right to sell the lab.[4] At the conclusion of the suit, EDP Technology could not raise the money, and in 1972, Cornell reorganized the lab as the for-profit "Calspan Corporation" and then sold its stock in Calspan to the public.

Calspan was the first in a series of corporate owners that have included Arvin Industries, Space Industries International, Veridian Corporation and General Dynamics.

In 2005, Calspan Corporation was returned to independent ownership when a local management group purchased the Aeronautics and Transportation Testing Groups of the Western New York operation from General Dynamics.

Under the name of Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory were inventions of the first crash test dummy in 1948, the automotive seat belt in 1951, the first mobile field unit with Doppler weather radar for weather-tracking in 1956, the first accurate airborne simulation of another aircraft (the North American X-15) in 1960, the first successful demonstration of an automatic terrain-following radar system in 1964, the first use of a laser beam to successfully measure gas density in 1966, the first independent HYGE sled test facility to evaluate automotive restraint systems in 1967, the mytron, an instrument for research on neuromuscular behavior and disorders in 1969, and the prototype for the Federal Bureau of Investigation's fingerprint reading system in 1972. CAL served as an "honest broker" making objective comparisons of competing plans to build military hardware.[3] It also conducted classified counter-insurgency research in Thailand for the Defense Department.[3] By the time of its divestiture, CAL had 1,600 employees.[3]

Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory conducted wind tunnel tests on models of a number of skyscrapers, including the John Hancock Tower in Boston, Massachusetts.

The QAnon Party? It’s Not a Conspiracy Theory

Conspiracy movements usually end up entering the halls of power. And then they get absorbed.

In American history, conspiracy theory-making has a way of turning into policymaking.

It’s tempting to view QAnon’s rise as a threat to America’s democracy — especially with a believer poised to win a seat in the House of Representatives. But history suggests that conspiracy-based movements have been a part of the U.S. democracy since the nation’s founding.

Long before the modern Republican and Democratic parties held sway, a succession of others rose and fell. In between, smaller fringe movements surged, often embracing some pretty bizarre conspiracies. Eventually, though, the QAnons of the past didn’t take over mainstream parties. Rather, their entry into the halls of power led to their absorption — or, alternatively, excommunication — by more mainstream parties.

The historian Richard Hofstadter was one of the first to highlight the significance of “paranoid” politics in a now-famous essay in 1964. Such conspiracies, he observed, invariably hold that a secretive cabal of elite insiders intends to corrupt and destroy the nation. QAnon’s satanic pedophiles working from within the “deep state” is squarely in this tradition.

Conspiratorial thinking first gained traction in U.S. politics in the late 1790s, when the New Englander Federalists, their power on the wane, became convinced that Illuminati members headquartered in Europe were plotting to destroy the new nation with their trademark secularism. A strange coalition of Federalist politicians and congregational preachers joined together to sound the alarm.

Some Federalist true believers argued that Thomas Jefferson, who would challenge John Adams for the presidency, was the leader of the American Illuminati and the embodiment of the antichrist.

Rev. Timothy Dwight, who was arguably the most prominent pastor associated with the Federalists, led the call to arms in a famous sermon. “Shall we, my brethren, become partakers of these sins?” he asked his congregation in 1798. “Shall we introduce them into our government, our schools, our families? Shall our sons become the disciplines of Voltaire … or our daughters the concubines of the Illuminati?”

This early movement, though, quickly faded out — as did the Federalist Party. Indeed, Jefferson’s victory in 1800 ushered in the demise of the Federalists over the next two decades. But conspiracy thinking hardly vanished.

In the 1820s, the U.S. was left with only a single major political party, the Democratic Republicans. The fragile consensus unraveled over the course of the decade, triggering a fresh wave of paranoia.

Back then, many members of the nation’s political elite belonged to the Freemasons, a fraternal order that flourished in many countries. Membership in this society came with a pledge of secrecy, and high-ranking Masons earned titles like “master” and “high priest.” This was the “deep state” circa 1826, complete with a star defector like Q: William Morgan.

The former Mason — and critic of the Masonic Order — was arrested and promptly disappeared. Though no one ever found a body, the backlash against Freemasons was ferocious. Before long, an entire political party had emerged dedicated to exposing the iniquities of the secret order: the Anti-Masonic Party.

As one historian of this movement has written, “Masonic secrecy became synonymous with darkness, sin, immorality, intemperance, treason, and the work of Satan.” Or as one Anti-Mason politician put it, Freemasonry lured people down “the steps that lead down to the gates of hell; the paths of perdition; conclaves of corruption, atheism, and infidelity.”

And yet, this did not lead to the end of the republic, then in its fourth decade. Instead, the Anti-Masonic Party became institutionalized as a political force, settling on key issues far removed from their original obsession, like higher tariffs.

An Anti-Mason won the governorship of Vermont in 1831; in total, the Anti-Masons sent 40 individuals to Congress, and many more to state legislatures. It was then largely absorbed by the newly formed Whig Party, which vied with the Democrats for dominance beginning in the 1830s.

Nicolas Sarkozy has failed in his bid to have criminal charges over £42million of illegal payments from Colonel Gaddafi thrown out.

Judges sitting at the Paris Appeal Court on Thursday rejected every single one of the former President's, 65, arguments against trial.

'I think the judges were able to resist all kinds of pressure,' said Vincent Brengarth, a barrister for Sherpa, a group that represents the victims of financial crimes, and which is a civil party in the case.

Confirming the devastating judgement against Sarkozy, Mr Brengarth said he was 'satisfied' with the result.

Sarkozy now faces a criminal trial and the prospect of prison over the Gaddafi money, which is believed to have been laundered through bank accounts in Panama and Switzerland.

It was said to have provided the cash to propel Sarkozy to power in 2007 – something Sarkozy vehemently denies.

Within a few months of his election, Sarkozy invited Gaddafi to Paris for a state visit and praised him as a great friend and 'Brother Leader'.

But two years ago Sarkozy was charged with taking bribes, embezzling Libyan public funds and illegal campaign financing.

Sarkozy is allowed one more appeal to the Court of Cassation in Paris, with his lawyers saying he is being 'hounded' by the French judiciary.

The case was triggered by Mediapart, the investigative news site which in 2012 published a document signed by Libya's intelligence chief which proved the equivalent of £42million was to be paid to Sarkozy.

Sarkozy has insisted that the contract is a fake, but it has now been ruled it can be used as evidence.

The former head of state's former conservative ministers Claude Gueant and Eric Woerth have also been charged in relation to the allegations.

It was in 2011 that RAF and French Air Force jets led the mass bombing campaign that ended with Gaddafi being hacked to death by a mob.

There have been claims that Sarkozy wanted his old friend and ally dead because of his potential to produce incriminating evidence.

Sarkozy is already set to appear in the dock in Paris on October 5, when he will become France's first ex-president to be tried for alleged crimes carried out in office.

He is said to have illegally tried to influence a judge, and has also been charged in a case relating to fake invoices devised to mask overspending on his failed 2012 re-election campaign.

Within a few days of Sarkozy losing his presidential immunity from prosecution in 2012, fraud squad detectives raided the Paris home he shares with his third wife, the pop singer and former model, Carla Bruni.

Anons have brought this up previously, so I'll mention it again. All we've heard from Virginia is the "under age trafficking" stuff. We haven't heard her mention anything more than that.
