As the discussion surrounding the release of emails from Anthony Fauci ripples through the media, we should all consider carefully the consequential ramifications of the discussion upon our nation. At the heart of the current debate is a question about whether the SARS-CoV-2 virus originated from a bio research lab in Wuhan China. An article in Vanity Fair magazine provides some stark background to contemplate:

In an internal memo obtained by Vanity Fair, Thomas DiNanno, former acting assistant secretary of the State Department’s Bureau of Arms Control, Verification, and Compliance, wrote that staff from two bureaus, his own and the Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation, “warned” leaders within his bureau “not to pursue an investigation into the origin of COVID-19” because it would “‘open a can of worms’ if it continued.”

There are a lot of familiar institutions and people within the article highlighting just how political everything around the COVID outbreak became. As a nation we have all lived through the consequences of these political manipulations. However, the application of Occam’s razor can serve as a guide; and I think the data is aligning in one specific direction.

Whether the virus originated in a Wuhan lab and was leaked accidentally or whether it was created by Chinese scientists and released purposefully is obviously something that will be debated for quite some time. For the sake of this particular point of discussion that particular aspect is less important. What is important, and indeed more factually likely, is that regardless of SARS-CoV-2 origination there were political elements inside the U.S. who sought to take advantage of the crisis.

Gov Abbott says Texas will start arresting illegal migrants

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced that the state’s counties will soon arrest illegal migrants for aggravated trespass on Wednesday’s Sean Hannity show. This new policy will begin next week.

The Texas governor issued emergency declarations for 34 counties along the southern border over the immigration crisis. According to him, the counties asked for the declarations. “I don’t think this has ever happened before,” Abbott said, “where a disaster declaration was made for border counties because of the influx of people coming across the border.”

Now, illegal migrants could land “half a year in jail if not a year in jail” for crossing the Texas border, Abbott said. This comes after reports that the Biden administration is prohibiting deportations. Meanwhile, attempted border crossings are on the rise.

Fauci Kept Funding Peter Daszak’s Wuhan ‘Gain of Function’ Experiments with $7.5 Million after Trump Canceled Grant

The grant to his EcoHealth Alliance group practically doubled despite its cancellation

Peter Daszak, who studied controversial “gain of function” experiments on coronavirus elements in Wuhan, received $7.5 million from Anthony Fauci after Trump cancelled his grant.

Last April, reports emerged that the EcoHealth Alliance, an organization run by one Peter Daszak, was involved in funding and collaborating with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, where researchers were examining coronaviruses extremely similar to the one behind the COVID-19 outbreak, and allegedly engaging in “gain of function” research relating to them. In an April 17th press conference, President Trump confirmed that a grant worth around $3.7 million since 2015 given to Daszak’s group by the National Institute for Health would be ended “very quickly” following the reports.

Only one week later on April 24th, all future funding for the EHA was cut, and they were ordered to stop spending the $369,819 remaining from its 2020 grant. “At this time, NIH does not believe that the current project outcomes align with the program goals and agency priorities,” Michael Lauer, the agency’s deputy director for extramural research, wrote in a letter to EcoHealth Alliance officials.

From within the treasure trove of 3,200 pages of emails obtained from Anthony Fauci, one email can be found from Daszak, who thanked Fauci for dismissing the lab leak theory as being simply conspiratorial the day after President Trump announced the funding would be cut.

“As the PI of the R01 grant publicly targeted by Fox News reporters at the Presidential press briefing last night, I just wanted to say a personal thankyou [sic] on behalf of our staff and collaborators, for publicly standing up and stating that the scientific evidence supports a natural origin for COVID-19 from a bat-to-human spillover, not a lab release from the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Daszak said. “From my perspective, your comments are brave, and coming from your trusted voice, will help dispel the myths being spun around the virus’ origins,” he continued, expressing his wish to thank Fauci in person. Twitter Suspends Organization for Announcing They Will Release More Fauci Emails

The Big Tech site cited their COVID-19 misinformation policy as a reason for the suspension

The Informed Consent Action Network was suspended by Twitter on Thursday after they announced that they will soon be publishing more emails from Anthony Fauci.

ICAN, an organisation dedicated to increasing informed consent regarding vaccinations, tweeted on Thursday that following the release of thousands of pages from emails from Anthony Fauci that had been revealed through Freedom of Information Act requests from the Washington Post and Buzzfeed, that they would be “dropping 3000 new pages of FOIA’d Fauci emails” that evening, “providing further insight into Anthony Fauci’s actions on Covid, Vaccine Safety, and more.”

However, conservative commentator Michelle Malkin later announced that ICAN had been suspended by Twitter for announcing they would release more emails from Fauci. In a screenshot posted by Malkin to the Big Tech site, ICAN’s Twitter had been locked, due to the tweet allegedly “violating their policy on spreading misleading and potentially harmful information related to COVID-19.”

On their website, Twitter declares that “in order for content related to COVID-19 to be labeled or removed under this policy, it must: advance a claim of fact, expressed in definitive terms; be demonstrably false or misleading, based on widely available, authoritative sources; and be likely to impact public safety or cause serious harm.” Twitter’s further five categories within this policy relating to discussions surrounding the coronavirus outbreak also do not seem to contain any rules which would have resulted in the tweet from ICAN being removed. National File reached out to Twitter for comment on this story, asking which area of their COVID-19 misinformation policy ICAN violated, but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

National File has reported extensively on the contents of Fauci’s emails. One email chain from February of 2020 show that Fauci was not concerned with the new variant of COVID-19, and believed that it would be only as mild as the previous swine flu pandemic from 2009. In another email from the same month, Fauci said that “most transmissions” of virus “occur from someone who is symptomatic” and “not asymptomatic.” However, Fauci publicly touted the idea that asymptomatic spread is “not rare” but in fact common, as the medical experts spread fear about the virus.

Yet another email exchange from Fauci shows him promising to pressure then-President Trump to intimidate Florida Governor Ron DeSantis into closing gyms, bars and beaches. Fauci and another physician raged at citizens exercising their individual liberty, with Fauci saying that he screamed during television interviews “2 to 5 times per night” when he saw young people having fun.

Abstract:

We are currently witnessing a major epidemic caused by the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). The evolution of 2019-nCoV remains elusive. _We found 4 insertions in the spike glycoprotein(S) which are unique to the 2019-nCoV and are not present in other coronaviruses._ Importantly, _amino acid residues in all the 4 inserts have identity or similarity to those in the HIV-1 gp120 or HIV-1 Gag._ Interestingly, despite the inserts being discontinuous on the primary amino acid sequence, 3D-modelling of the 2019-nCoV suggests that they converge to constitute the receptor binding site._The finding of 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV, all of which have identity /similarity to amino acid residues in key structural proteins of HIV-1 is unlikely to be fortuitous in nature. This work provides yet unknown insights on 2019-nCoV and sheds light on the evolution and pathogenicity of this virus with important implications for diagnosis of this virus.

Conclusions

Our analysis of the spike glycoprotein of 2019-nCoV revealed several interesting findings: _First, we identified 4 unique inserts in the 2019-nCoV spike glycoprotein that are not present in any other coronavirus reported till date. To our surprise, all the 4 inserts in the 2019-nCoV mapped to short segments of amino acids in the HIV-1 gp120 and Gag among all annotated virus proteins in the NCBI database. This uncanny similarity of novel inserts in the 2019- nCoV spike protein to HIV-1 gp120 and Gag is unlikely to be fortuitous. Further, 3D modelling suggests that at least 3 of the unique inserts which are non-contiguous in the primary protein sequence of the 2019-nCoV spike glycoprotein converge to constitute the key components of the receptor binding site. Of note, all the 4 inserts have pI values of around 10 that may facilitate virus-host interactions. Taken together, our findings suggest unconventional evolution of 2019-nCoV that warrants further investigation. Our work highlights novel evolutionary aspects of the 2019-nCoV and has implications on the pathogenesis and diagnosis of this virus._

Billionaire investor William Ackman’s blank-check firm Pershing Square Tontine Holdings is nearing a deal with Universal Music Group that would value the company at nearly $40 billion, people familiar with the matter said.

A deal of that size, if completed successfully, would mark the biggest-ever merger involving a so-called special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), similar in size to the $40-billion deal that ride-hailing giant Grab Holdings clinched in April. Pershing Square’s shares were down nearly 12% in after-market trade, after news of the potential deal broke. SPACs like Pershing Square Tontine raise money in an initial public offering with the aim of merging with a private company. For the private company, the process is an alternative to it doing an IPO. In May, Ackman told investors on a quarterly call that his team was “working to complete the transaction” and that he likes the business and loves the management team, without naming the company that Pershing Square was in talks with. The Wall Street Journal reported the news earlier on Thursday. A spokesman for Pershing Square Tontine declined to comment. Universal Music Group did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

Researchers from the University of Washington and Oregon explained that the problem of satellite map counterfeiting will become urgent over the next few years. They have now described a mechanism that can detect false satellite images.

The scientists added that maps are used in many of the modern services found in national defense and even autonomous vehicles, a technology that is still under development. AI has had a positive impact on this field through the development of Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI), which uses machine learning to extract and analyze geospatial data. But these same techniques can be used to spoof GPS signals, location information on social media posts, and more.

“We want this technology to be ethical. At the same time, researchers need to pay attention and identify fake images. With a lot of data, these images can look real to the human eye and cannot be detected manually, ”the researchers note.

To understand how to detect an artificially created image, scientists first decided to create one. To do this, they used a technique common in deep forgery: Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Networks (CycleGAN), an unsupervised deep learning algorithm that can mimic a variety of media.

The researchers altered the satellite image of Tacoma, Washington, adding elements of Seattle and Beijing to make it look as real as possible. After creating the modified image, they compared 26 different parameters of the photographs to determine if there are statistical differences between true and false images. Statistical differences were recorded for 20 out of 26 indicators, or in 80% of cases.

Some of the differences are the color of the rooftops, the dimness or brightness of photographs. However, these differences depended on the original data used to create the forgery.

Vermont Republican Governor Seeks to Give Non-Citizens Voting Rights in Local Elections

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) is asking state lawmakers to pass an elections law that would allow non-citizens across the state to vote in local municipality elections.

Scott vetoed two pieces of legislation that sought to give non-citizens the right to vote in local elections in Montpelier and Winooski, Vermont. However, he said he is not opposed to the plan but wants state legislatures to send him a bill that would give non-citizens the right to vote, statewide, in local elections.

“This is an important policy discussion that deserves further consideration and debate,” Scott wrote in his vetoes:

Allowing a highly variable town-by-town approach to municipal voting creates inconsistency in election policy, as well as separate and unequal classes of residents potentially eligible to vote on local issues. I believe it is the role of the Legislature to establish clarity and consistency on this matter. This should include defining how municipalities determine which legal residents may vote on local issues, as well as speciffing the local matters they may vote on. Returning these bills provides the opportunity to do this important work. [Emphasis added]

For these reasons I am returning this legislation without my signature pursuant to Chapter II, Section l1 of the Vermont Constitution. I understand these charter changes are well-intentioned, but I ask the Legislature to revisit the issue of non-citizen voting in a more comprehensive manner and develop a statewide policy or a uniform template and process for those municipalities wishing to grant the right of voting in local elections to all legal residents. [Emphasis added]

Such a statewide policy could mean that legal immigrants with green cards and work visas would be allowed to vote in Vermont’s local elections like school board, mayoral, and city council races.

The city of San Francisco, California, famously gave non-citizens the right to vote in local school board elections in 2018.

The policy has become a mainstream Democrat position, with failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams saying in 2019 that she would not “oppose” non-citizens voting in local elections.

SLED charges ex-Airbnb operator after hidden camera found in Aiken rental units

A 67-year-old former operator of short-term rental Airbnb units in Aiken County has been arrested by State Law Enforcement Division agents on a voyeurism charge after police said he secretly videoed a woman in a bedroom.

Three civil lawsuits filed earlier in Aiken County against the rental operator, Rhett Riviere, allege he had spy cameras in rental unit rooms and violated the privacy of the women. Those lawsuits are still pending, according to Aiken County court records.

In Aiken Thursday, Riviere was released on a $5,000 recognizance bond on the criminal charge, meaning he posted no money but pledged to show up at future court appearances or forfeit $5,000.
