Judge rules DeVos must testify in lawsuit over student loan forgiveness
A federal judge on Wednesday said that former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos must testify in a class-action lawsuit over her handling of student loan forgiveness claims, ruling that “exceptional circumstances” justify the rare deposition of a former Cabinet secretary.
Judge William Alsup rejected the joint effort by DeVos and the Biden administration to prevent her from having to testify in the case. The lawsuit is being brought on behalf of roughly 160,000 borrowers who applied to the Education Department for loan forgiveness, on the grounds that they were defrauded by their for-profit colleges.
Alsup, a Clinton appointee in the Northern District of California, ruled that DeVos must sit for a three-hour deposition in which attorneys for the student borrowers may question her under oath about the decisions she made regarding the loan forgiveness program.
The Trump administration stopped issuing final decisions on the student borrowers’ claims — known as borrower defense applications — for at least 18 months, and then swiftly dismissed large swaths of claims with little explanation provided to each borrower. The Trump administration said it needed this the time to figure out its policy and issue reasoned decisions on borrowers' claims.
The freeze in the program happened as DeVos was taking a series of policy steps designed to cut the amount of debt relief that defrauded borrowers can receive under the program. She criticized the Obama administration’s more permissive approach to approving loan forgiveness claims as allowing students to tap into “free money” from the government.
Alsup previously ruled that there was a “strong showing” that the Trump administration lied about its actual reason for effectively halting the program and then churning out so many rejections.

New Zealand spending plan includes rebuilding Antarctic base
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) - New Zealand plans to rebuild its Antarctic base and spend billions more on welfare payments as part of a spending program aimed at lifting the economy out of a coronavirus slump.
The government on Thursday unveiled its annual budget, which indicated the economy is doing much better than forecast after the pandemic first hit.
That's thanks in large part to the nation's success in stopping the spread of the virus, as well as strong international demand for the nation's milk and other agricultural exports.
Treasury figures indicate the nation's economy is expected to grow by 2.9% this year and rise to 4.4% growth by 2023. That follows a sharp plunge and quick recovery last year, which ended in an overall economic contraction of 1.7%.
The budget plan includes $344 million New Zealand dollars ($247 million) to rebuild Scott Base in Antarctica, which has been used by scientists since it was first built in 1957.
"The outdated buildings and facilities that keep the residents alive in the coldest, driest, windiest place on Earth have deteriorated," Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta said. "Doing nothing would eventually lead to the closure of the base."

NY State Troopers Raid Democrat Mayor’s Home in Rochester, NY — Police Announce It Is a Criminal Investigation

New York State Troopers raided the home of Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren on Wednesday night. Reports say her husband was in handcuffs as the troopers executed a drug warrant at the mayor’s home. Lovely Warren is a Democrat.
A criminal investigation was conducted at the home of Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren Wednesday. Troopers executed a search warrant at the Democrat’s house as part of an “ongoing criminal investigation,” New York State Police said in a brief press release. No other information was provided by law enforcement officials.
“The Mayor is just learning about the events that unfolded this afternoon and has no more information than the rest of the community,” Rochester’s City Communications Director Justin Roj said in a Wednesday night statement, according to multiple local outlets. “She hopes to learn more details this evening and will have a statement tomorrow.”

A citizen group has launched a bid to recall Gov. Jay Inslee, levying a series of accusations against the governor regarding his handling of the pandemic over the last year.
Recall campaign, Kshama Sawant dig in for lengthy battle
The group included five charges in its recall filing, alleging the following:
That Inslee violated religious freedoms in restricting large gatherings
That the rights of residential landlords were infringed upon by the state’s eviction moratorium
That he overstepped his authority by suspending the Open Public Meetings Act
That he violated state law by suspending large gatherings
That he failed to adequately demonstrate a “just cause” for issuing proclamations related to Washington’s declared state of emergency
The recall petition still requires court approval to move forward. Should it get that approval, the group behind the effort estimates that it will need roughly 1.5 million certified signatures to get the recall on the ballot.
Inslee 'won' reelection in 2020 [through mail-in voting and rigging, with help from Soros-backed Secretary of State Kim Wyman], 'defeating' Republican challenger Loren Culp 56% to 43%, marking his largest ever margin of victory as governor. Culp garnered just over 1.7 million votes.
This will mark the second attempt to recall Inslee in recent years. In 2019, Arthur West submitted a recall filing alleging that Inslee “was absent from Washington too frequently” while campaigning for president, and “failed to notify the lieutenant governor of these absences.” West also claimed that the governor had “improperly campaigned for a ballot initiative.”
A Thurston County court struck down that petition, finding the charges to be “legally and factually insufficient to submit to voters.” The Washington Supreme Court affirmed that decision, ruling that “West’s petition may have stated reasons to disagree with Governor Inslee, but they were not proper reasons to support a recall.”
This is also the latest in a series of high-profile recall efforts in Washington over the last year-plus, including failed efforts to remove Attorney General Bob Ferguson, Snohomish County Sheriff Adam Fortney, Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, and Thurston County Sheriff John Snaza. A recall against Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant is currently gathering signatures in hopes of getting on the ballot.

This began on May 17 and is running until tomorrow (May 21).
The Polish Armed Forces wrote on its website: "During the exercise, four episodes will be conducted. The first will concern the abduction of a civilian aircraft as a possible means of terrorist attack posing a threat to national security.

"The scenario involves carrying out a rescue operation, rescuing military property and transporting the victims to medical facilities.

The air force explained the training drill is being in airspace over Poland and in areas of the West Pomeranian, Pomeranian and Mazovian provinces.
This involves several military teams, as well as a host of emergency service operations.
The Polish Air Force added: "The main objective of the exercise is to test the capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces and the non-military system, as part of the state security system, to deal with crises specific to the air defence and air and sea rescue systems.

7 rural counties in Oregon that voted for Trump have voted to secede from the blue state and join Idaho
The seven counties that have voted in favor of the proposal - Lake, Grant, Baker, Malheur, Union, and Jefferson - overwhelmingly voted for President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.
Joe Biden won Oregon with 57% of the vote, largely driven by more heavily populated counties near Portland, Eugene, and Bend. Meanwhile, neighboring Idaho was decisive victory for Trump, who won 64% of votes in the state.
Greater Idaho's goal would involve about three-quarters of Oregon's land area to become part of Idaho. It calls the situation a win-win for everyone in the state, saying the more urban northwest portion of the state "would be free of 'low-income, Trump-voting counties.'"
"Idaho respects traditional morality and justice, and it doesn't get in the way of rural livelihoods. It has lower tax rate and a lower cost of living," the group says. "We need to unite our neighbors around the idea of moving the border so that we can convince state legislators to stop holding our counties captive in a blue state."
In a statement Wednesday, a spokesperson for Greater Idaho told OPB the latest vote "proves that rural Oregon wants out of Oregon."
"If we're allowed to vote for which government officials we want, we should be allowed to vote for which government we want as well," he said.

Deutsche Bank hires top Credit Suisse ECM banker Gruffat
Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) has hired Credit Suisse's (CSGN.S) Stephane Gruffat as co-head of its equity capital markets unit in Europe, marking the departure of another senior banker from the Swiss lender which has been involved in a run of scandals.
Gruffat joins the German bank's equity capital markets for Europe, Middle East and Africa after over two decades at Credit Suisse, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters. Gruffat was most recently head of the equity capital markets syndicate at Credit Suisse. His move represents something of a coup for Deutsche Bank, which trails its Swiss rival in the global ECM stakes, and follows other recent departures from Credit Suisse. Last week, Reuters reported that Didier Denat, who spent 21 years at Credit Suisse, was to join Citi to help lead its alternative assets franchise in EMEA.
Credit Suisse has been plunged into crisis after losing more than $5 billion from the collapse of U.S. investment firm Archegos and suspending funds linked to collapsed British supply chain finance company Greensill Capital. The scandals have forced the bank to trim bonuses at a time when most of its rivals are expected to raise payouts after a bumper quarter for trading. The ECM sector has been one of Credit Suisse's bright spots though, with its strong tech franchise in the United States helping keep it competitive with its Wall Street rivals.
At Deutsche Bank, Gruffat will also be head of ECM syndicate for the EMEA region, and will report to Henrik Johnsson, the German lender's co-head of capital markets and European investment banking.
Deutsche Bank reported its highest profit in seven years for the first quarter, driven by its investment bank that benefited from the boom in listing special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs) Data from Refinitiv shows that Deutsche Bank lies 16th in the league table of capital raised on stock markets globally with $6.65 billion. Credit Suisse is in seventh place in that table with $15.38 billion of league table credit.
Gruffat has helped manage several high-profile stock market fundraisings in Europe including the listing of Spanish fund distribution firm Allfunds (ALLFG.AS) in Amsterdam last month.

EU slaps Nomura, UBS and UniCredit with $453 million fine over ‘trading cartel’
The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, has found seven investment banks guilty of breaching its antitrust rules during the 2008 global financial crisis, with three of the banks receiving fines.
The seven institutions participated in a “bonds trading cartel” in the primary and secondary market for European government debt between 2007 and 2011, the commission said a statement Thursday. Traders used chatrooms to exchange commercially sensitive information, discussing their bidding strategies in the run up to debt auctions, the commission added. “Our decision against Bank of America, Natixis, Nomura, RBS, UBS, UniCredit and WestLB sends a clear message that the Commission will not tolerate any kind of collusive behavior,” Margrethe Vestager, the head of competition policy in the EU, said in a statement. Nomura, UBS and UniCredit are now due to pay a combined fine of 371 million euros ($453 million).
A spokesperson for Nomura said the decision was related to behavior from two former employees at the bank, for an approximate 10-month time period in 2011. “Nomura will consider all options, including an appeal. Since the time of the relevant conduct, Nomura has introduced increased measures to ensure that we conduct our business with the highest levels of integrity at all times,” the spokesperson said via email.
UBS and UniCredit were not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC on Thursday.
NatWest, previously known as RBS, was not fined because it reported the wrongdoings to the commission.
Bank of America and Natixis do not have to pay a fine because their infringements have passed the time limit for sanctions and Portigon, formerly WestLB, didn’t receive a fine as it failed to report a net turnover in the last financial year.
“It is unacceptable, that in the middle of the financial crisis, when many financial institutions had to be rescued by public funding these investment banks colluded in this market at the expense of EU Member States,” Vestager also said Thursday.

To those of you who have previously applied to work the audit...
We have added a third shift and are vetting volunteers who are available to work multiple shifts per week.
8 AM – 1 PM
2 PM – 7 PM
8 PM – 1 AM
While we initially used a Google form (then other platforms) for volunteer observers to indicate interest, with the counter process also having migrated into volunteer mode we have consolidated efforts to vet more audit workers and are reaching out to those of you who've already filled out the form and most likely sent in your voter identification card along with three letters of recommendation.
Because of increased security and other concerns, we have expanded the requirements to move potential volunteers toward the final steps of the intake process for the unpaid volunteer positions:
-Maricopa County registered voter
-Voted in the November 2020 election
-No physical limitations that would hinder their work counting ballots, such as vision or hearing problems or any other physical limitation that you feel would cause a hinderance.
-Able to sit for 5 hours at a time doing repetitive activity.
-Required temperature screening upon entrance and wear a mask or face shield while onsite.
-A background check going back 10 years is required to be completed (no credit check). U.S. government issued identification is required to be uploaded and your social security number provided. The completed application is sent directly to the background check company.

Citing U.S. national security interests, the Biden Administration announced it would waive mandatory sanctions on the company Nord Stream 2 AG and its CEO Matthias Warnig.
“I am opposed to the decision by the Biden Administration to waive sanctions on NS2 AG and Matthias Warnig. I urge the administration to rip off the Band-Aid, lift these waivers and move forward with the congressionally mandated sanctions. The administration has said that the pipeline is a bad idea and that it is a Russian malign influence project. I share that sentiment, but fail to see how today’s decision will advance U.S. efforts to counter Russian aggression in Europe.
“If the administration maintains these waivers, I have several questions. First, what does the administration now expect from Germany after having made this significant concession to exercise the waiver? Will Berlin strengthen its support for Ukraine in the Normandy Format? Will it provide additional assistance to Kyiv in its struggle against Russian aggression? Also, what will the administration do to bolster our relationship with Ukraine?
“This decision has created uncertainty in many corners of Europe and I expect to hear very soon from the administration on its plans moving forward. I believe President Biden should do everything possible to accomplish what the Trump administration failed to do for four years: stop the completion of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline for good.”

Ohio House GOP Primary Candidate Helped Found Soros-Backed Environmentalist Group
A Soros Republican?
In a rarity, George Soros has a connection to a Republican candidate for once.
The candidate in question is one of the Republicans running for Ohio’s 15th district (which is +9 Republican).
As Red State’s Seton Motley writes:
Brian Stewart is an alleged Republican state Rep, running to be an alleged Republican US Congressman. In his announcement, he talks a little bit of a good game: “Th(e)se challenges – whether from the extreme left, or an adversarial nation – must be dealt with aggressively and with conviction.”
As he notes however, Stewart launched the environmental group Ohio Conservative Energy Forum, which is backed by leftist donors including Soros and former Democrat presidential candidate Tom Steyer. All mention of Stewart was scrubbed from their website in 2019.
Soros money is behind…just about everything Leftist. His Tides Foundation kicked in coin to the Network. And Steyer’s TomKat Charitable Trust/Foundation – kicked in $3 million.
Oh: And President Joe Biden’s ridiculous “Climate Czar” Gina McCarthy? She of the radical policy prescriptions and fake email accounts?
She served on the Board of the same Leftist group alleged Republican Stewart had been proudly leading.
The group also takes money from the leftist Rockefeller Brothers Fund, the Turner Foundation, the McKnight Foundation and the Argosy Foundation.
The conservative-named organization has long been described as a Trojan horse due to the army of leftist backers behind it. The group produces polls claiming the prove the majority of conservatives back a cavalcade of left-wing environmental policies, presumably in an attempt to further a bogus narrative that such policies are bipartisan. It’s the same kind of propaganda strategy you see employed over at MSNBC or CNN, who employ “Republicans” whose views align with 5% of actual Republicans.
As the Washington Examiner’s Kevin Rooney wrote back in 2019:
Why would an organization that markets itself as conservative receive the backing of so many liberal foundations?=
Hayden Ludwig, an investigator with the Capital Research Center, has some insight. He sees an effort from environmentalists to burrow in with pliable Republicans who seek cover on questions of climate change.
“These groups want to pretend to be bipartisan, but their funding pretty much comes from all left-wing groups,” he said in an interview. “In some cases, a group may have a Republican figurehead in a prominent position, but when you look at the rest of their staff and their funding it’s pretty much all left-of-center.”
It’s no secret that Soros has long funded hundreds of leftist organizations. It looks like we need to keep tabs on who he’s funding on the “right” as well.

The Media only points out racism when it directly effects them
The Chicago Tribune canceled an interview with Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Wednesday in protest at her decision to exclude white reporters from one-on-one interviews on the occasion of her second anniversary in office, reporter Gregory Pratt noted.
Pratt, who is Latino, noted that he had been granted an interview under Lightfoot’s racially exclusionary policy, which was revealed Tuesday, but had used that opportunity to ask her to end that policy. When she refused, the Tribune canceled the interview.
Lightfoot attempted to defend her policy on Wednesday in a letter to news outlets, attacking “systemic racism” in the media.
When she took the oath of office in 2019, Lightfoot swore to “support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Illinois.” The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution has been interpreted to imply that racial discrimination is prohibited; the Illinois Constitution bars racial discrimination in employment and housing, and also condemns “communications that … incite violence, hatred, abuse or hostility toward, a person or group of persons by reason of or by reference to” race.
Other journalists have been happy to endorse the mayor’s policy, notably Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times, a favorite of the Obama administration, who told CNN that she was “not troubled” by Lightfoot’s exclusion of white journalists.
Other journalists noted that Lightfoot had declined interviews with journalists “of color” who had seemed to be critical of her.
