The British government has not given permission for the US to use UK military bases to support potential US strikes on Iran, the BBC understands.

The US has in the past used RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire, and the UK overseas territory of Diego Garcia, in the Indian Ocean, to carry out strikes in the Middle East region.

The Times reports, external that US President Donald Trump's latest criticism of Sir Keir Starmer's deal to hand the Chagos Islands over to Mauritius and lease back a joint UK-US military base was prompted by the UK withholding permission to use bases.

A UK government spokesperson said: "As routine, we do not comment on operational matters."

The US has been pressuring Iran to agree to curb its nuclear programme.

It has threatened possible strikes if it fails to do so and has moved warships, aircraft and other military assets to the region in preparation for a possible strike.

At the same time, some progress has been reported at talks between American and Iranian negotiators in Switzerland.

On Thursday, Trump said the world would find out "over the next, probably, 10 days" whether the US would reach a deal with Iran or take military action.

A UK government spokesperson said: "There is a political process ongoing between the US and Iran, which the UK supports.

"Iran must never be able to develop a nuclear weapon, and our priority is security in the region."

Sir Keir spoke to Trump over the phone on Tuesday, after the US government gave its formal support for the Chagos deal.

The Times reports that the pair discussed Trump's ultimatum to Iran over its nuclear programme, and Trump made his statement attacking the Chagos deal the next day.

Insiders believe the Pentagon's preparations for possible strikes on Iran - which could potentially be launched from Diego Garcia - may have shifted the president's understanding of the significance of the island, the largest in the Chagos archipelago.

Trump referenced this in his Truth Social post, saying: "Should Iran decide not to make a deal, it may be necessary for the United States to use Diego Garcia, and the [RAF] Airfield location in Fairford [Gloucestershire], in order to eradicate a potential attack by a highly unstable and dangerous regime."

Neither RAF Fairford nor Diego Garcia were used in the US strikes carried out last year on Iran's nuclear facilities.

At the time a senior UK defence source said Washington had not sought permission.

RAF Fairford and other UK military bases were most recently used by the US in support of a military operation to seize the registered tanker known as Bella 1 earlier this year.

But that operation was carried out with the full support of the UK. At the time ministers said the operation was justified under international law.

Questions of international law would likely be applied by the UK government in justifying support for any US military action in Iran.

Under a long-held agreement, the US would have to first request to use any UK sovereign military bases before conducting military operations.

Under international law, there is no distinction between a state carrying out the attack and those which have supported that state, if the latter has "knowledge of the circumstances of the internationally wrongful act".

In January, the BBC's political editor Chris Mason asked Sir Keir whether he supported a potential US strike on Iran.

At the time, the prime minister replied he was talking to allies about how to prevent Iran from developing nuclear activities and killing protesters.

"The aim here is that Iran shouldn't be able to develop nuclear weapons. That's hugely important," he said.

"And of course we need to deal with the fact that they are repressing protesters, killing protesters. It's grotesque what is happening. And so that's where our focus is and we're working with allies to that end."

Reacting to the latest developments, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, a long-standing Trump critic, said: "It's now clear Donald Trump is trying to bully the government into letting the US use UK bases like Diego Garcia to pursue unilateral military action.

"Keir Starmer needs to stand strong and give Parliament a vote on the use of UK bases by US forces."

A sanctuary jurisdiction in North Carolina is responsible for releasing from jail an illegal alien accused of raping a child under 15 years old, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials reveal.

This month, law enforcement in Mecklenburg County, a sanctuary jurisdiction that refuses to cooperate with ICE, arrested Arnol De Jesus Guevara-Lopez and charged him with statutory rape of a child under 15 years old and indecent liberties with a child.

Although ICE agents asked Mecklenburg County law enforcement to transfer Guevara-Lopez into federal custody, they refused, releasing him back into the community. The illegal alien was re-arrested after his release from jail for failing to meet his bond conditions.

“These are the types of monsters North Carolina sanctuary politicians are protecting from immigration enforcement and releasing from their jails into our neighborhoods to prey on American children,” the Department of Homeland Security’s Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement.

ICE agents have since lodged another detainer on Guevara-Lopez so that he is not released again into the community.

“This is a perfect example of why sanctuary policies make Americans less safe,” McLaughlin said. “We are calling on Charlotte sanctuary politicians to commit to turning this child rapist over to ICE, so he can never walk American streets again. Sanctuary politicians must stop releasing pedophiles and rapists into our neighborhoods.”

Federal prosecutors who are probing the weaponization of intelligence and law enforcement against President Donald Trump and his allies have sent a secret and rare request for evidence from the U.S. Senate regarding former CIA Director John Brennan, signaling that they are zeroing in on his questionable testimony going back nearly a decade on his now-debunked efforts to tie Trump's 2016 campaign to collusion with Russia.

The overtures to the U.S. Senate and its intelligence committee from U.S. Attorney Jason A. Reding Quiñones' team in Miami began over the last month and were formalized in a written request for documents, transcripts and testimony last Friday, according to multiple people directly familiar with the conversations.

Senate lawyers and prosecutors are negotiating the best way to transfer the evidence, including a possible visit by the prosecution team to Washington in the coming days.

The efforts are complicated in part because much of what Brennan discussed in briefings dating to 2016 about alleged Russian interference efforts and now-debunked allegations of Trump collusion are classified, stored in secure briefing rooms and include evidence controlled by the nation's chief spy agency, the CIA, the sources said.

The House Judiciary Committee last year formally referred Brennan, who oversaw the Obama-era CIA, for prosecution, alleging he gave false testimony in 2023 about his role in trying to bring the discredited Steele Dossier into an intelligence assessment that suggested Russia tried to help Trump beat Hillary Clinton. That testimony is still covered by the five-year statute of limitations for prosecuting false testimony to Congress.

The request to the Senate signals a possible longer-term conspiracy case, seeking contacts with the Senate that stretches back nearly a decade. Brennan's last known testimony contacts with the Senate date to June 23, 2017 and May 16, 2018, two dates that extend outside the usual five-year statute of limitations.

Instead of looking at the light absorbed by the exoplanet, Grillmair and colleagues had studied the light given off by the planet itself. To do so, the team had collected light when the planet was in front of the star and when it was behind the star. Subtracting the two signals gave them the light emitted from the planet itself. In 2007 the team did this for two orbital periods and found no evidence of water.

Now, however, they have had another try, looking at 10 revolutions and found clear evidence for water. The team looked at infrared light with wavelengths between 5-14 ?m, where they found a "bump" in the spectrum at 6.2 ?m, which corresponds to a specific vibrational bending mode of water - a spectral feature that astronomers expect to see in such a hot giant.

Tinetti told physicsworld.com that she was pleased that her group's 2007 sighting of water has been confirmed by Grillmair and puts the original discrepancy down to the extreme difficulty of making such measurements.

Help in the search for life

She added that the techniques developed by Grillmair and colleagues — as well as by other groups — could be used to look for water on rocky exoplanets that resemble Earth and could harbour life. However, she added that this may have to wait for the next generation of space telescopes such as NASA's James Webb, because Earth-like exoplanets are much more difficult to find — and give off much less light — than their Jupiter-like counterparts.

For years the Food and Drug Administration has handed down shocking decision after shocking decision, always in the same direction: The approval of Alzheimer’s drugs that are balanced precariously on a mountain of fraudulent papers and that sometimes make your brain explode; the approval of OxyContin for 11-year-olds; the approval of COVID-19 booster shots in healthy young people in order to please the political science majors in the White House.

But there’s a new sheriff in town, and he’s made a lot of powerful enemies already reining in a lawless pharmaceutical industry.

“Vinay Prasad’s Vaccine Kill Shot,” the Wall Street Journal editorial board shrieked on Feb. 11, referring to the decision by the FDA’s new chief vaccine regulator to send back a study of Moderna’s mRNA flu vaccine with a grade of incomplete, saying it does not meet the standards of an “adequate and well-controlled” study.

Prasad, the head of FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, personally signed a Feb. 3 “refusal to file,” a formal refusal to review Moderna’s clinical trial — a regulatory middle finger.

“I feel like the word ‘surprised’ gets used a lot in the company communications we see,” said Drew Armstrong, executive editor of the pharma trade publication Endpoints News, on a podcast following the decision.

But the FDA makes shocking decisions all the time. What’s novel this time — provoking an unusual rebuke by Moderna and a media meltdown — is that the decision defies pharma influence rather than capitulating to it.

President Trump says he is ordering the government to fully release files on aliens, extraterrestrial life, and UFOs.

Matt Gaetz has claimed that some members of Congress believe aliens have already established bases on Earth and are actively operating from them.

This phrase was not spoken by Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong or Fidel Castro, but rather by the new Mayor of New York City: democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani.

New York residents have reason for concern: the millions of people who were murdered under the “embrace” of collectivism offer a sobering precedent of where Mamdani’s rhetoric ultimately leads. Catholics in the city should be especially worried, given that Mamdani’s ideology has historically pinpointed the Church as the primary obstacle to the socialist vision of collectivised “rights”.

Mamdani is already making sure Catholics know that they are not welcome in his city.
