ASA’s Parker Solar Probe Makes 27th Swing Around the Sun

NASA’s Parker Solar Probe completed its 27th close approach to the Sun on March 11, again matching its record distance of 3.8 million miles (6.2 million kilometers) from the solar surface.

The flyby allowed the spacecraft to conduct measurements of the solar wind and solar activity, contributing to our understanding of how the Sun’s atmosphere changes throughout the solar cycle.

The durable spacecraft checked in with flight controllers at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland — where Parker Solar Probe was also designed and built — on March 14, transmitting a beacon tone indicating that its systems were operating normally.

Speeding on a path around the Sun that limited communications with Earth, Parker had been out of contact and operating autonomously, as planned, for about a month leading up to, and during, closest approach.

During this solar encounter, from March 6 through March 16, Parker’s four scientific instrument packages gathered data from inside the Sun’s atmosphere, or corona.

Parker will begin returning detailed telemetry on its status on March 17, with science data transmission for this solar encounter set to start the following day.

Parker’s observations of the solar wind and solar events, such as coronal mass ejections and the aftermaths of flares, are critical to advancing humankind’s understanding of the Sun and the phenomena that drive high-energy space weather events that pose risks to astronauts, satellites, air travel, and even power grids on Earth.

Understanding the fundamental physics of space weather enables more reliable prediction of astronaut safety during future deep-space missions to the Moon and Mars.

Parker also equaled its record-setting speed of 430,000 miles per hour (687,000 kilometers per hour) — a mark that, like the distance to the Sun, was set during a close approach on Dec. 24, 2024, and matched during 2025 flybys on March 22, June 19, Sept. 16 and Dec. 13.

Parker launched in August 2018.

At the time, the Sun was near the minimum of its 11-year activity cycle. In 2024, representatives from NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the international Solar Cycle Prediction Panel announced that the Sun has reached its solar maximum period.

Parker’s 27 encounters with the Sun reflect this change over time, sampling the Sun’s atmosphere from quiet to very active periods. Parker Solar Probe will remain in this orbit around the Sun and continue making observations into the declining phase of solar activity.

The next steps for the mission in late 2026 and beyond are formally under NASA review.

The following article by Robert E. West clarifies the historical context. (The second article as presented by the Irish People) The Irish slaves were sent to British territories in the Caribbean. They were categorized as “indentured” workers and “servants” of the English colonial elites

They came as slaves; vast human cargo transported on tall British ships bound for the Americas. They were shipped by the hundreds of thousands and included men, women, and even the youngest of children.

Whenever they rebelled or even disobeyed an order, they were punished in the harshest ways. Slave owners would hang their human property by their hands and set their hands or feet on fire as one form of punishment. They were burned alive and had their heads placed on pikes in the marketplace as a warning to other captives.

We don’t really need to go through all of the gory details, do we? We know all too well the atrocities of the African slave trade.

But, are we talking about African slavery? King James II and Charles I also led a continued effort to enslave the Irish. Britain’s famed Oliver Cromwell furthered this practice of dehumanizing one’s next door neighbour.

Human Livestock

The Irish slave trade began when 30,000 Irish prisoners were sold as slaves to the New World. The King James I Proclamation of 1625 required Irish political prisoners be sent overseas and sold to English settlers in the West Indies. By the mid 1600’s, the Irish were the main slaves sold to Antigua and Montserrat. At that time, 70% of the total population of Montserrat were Irish slaves.

Ireland quickly became the biggest source of human livestock for English merchants. The majority of the early slaves to the New World were actually white.

Genocide and Slavery

From 1641 to 1652, over 500,000 Irish were killed by the English and another 300,000 were sold as slaves. Ireland’s population fell from about 1,500,000 to 600,000 in one single decade. Families were ripped apart as the British did not allow Irish dads to take their wives and children with them across the Atlantic. This led to a helpless population of homeless women and children. Britain’s solution was to auction them off as well.

Children Sold as Slaves

During the 1650s, over 100,000 Irish children between the ages of 10 and 14 were taken from their parents and sold as slaves in the West Indies, Virginia and New England. In this decade, 52,000 Irish (mostly women and children) were sold to Barbados and Virginia. Another 30,000 Irish men and women were also transported and sold to the highest bidder. In 1656, Cromwell ordered that 2000 Irish children be taken to Jamaica and sold as slaves to English settlers.

UCAR statement on lawsuit filed against federal administrative agencies

Complaint alleges violations of the Constitution and the Administrative Procedure Act

The following is a statement from the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which manages the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) on behalf of NSF.

UCAR is a nonprofit consortium of 129 North American universities with programs in Earth system science.

UCAR today filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado against the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF); the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA); the United States Department of Commerce (DOC); the United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB); and their respective directors in their official capacity.

The lawsuit alleges violations of the Constitution and the Administrative Procedure Act arising from several adverse actions taken by federal agencies over the last several months directed against NCAR and UCAR.

The lawsuit requests the court to stop implementation of the actions, declare the actions unlawful, and issue an injunction to prevent further harm to NCAR and UCAR’s operations and mission.

These actions pose a direct threat to national security, public safety, and economic prosperity and risk setting back the country’s global leadership in weather and space weather modeling and forecasting. W

e are hopeful that this lawsuit will prevent future unlawful action by the agencies.

UCAR and NCAR will not be making any further public comment while this litigation is pending.

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters has announced its endorsement of the Safety and Accountability in Freight Enforcement (SAFE) Act, legislation introduced by Representative Harriet Hageman (R-WY), which aims to tackle the issue of “chameleon carriers,” trucking companies that repeatedly reopen under new identities to avoid enforcement after being shut down for violations. “Chameleon carriers have gone unchecked for decades, harming and weakening America’s trucking industry,” Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien stated, adding, “These unscrupulous operators jeopardize the safety of everyone on our roadways and threaten the livelihoods of truck drivers who follow the rules.”

American highways have seen a recent uptick in deadly vehicle accidents caused by illegal immigrant and noncitizen semi-truck drivers, many of whom received commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) from New York or California. The National Pulse reported in February that the Trump administration’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has shut down nearly 8,000 sham trucking schools in recent months as part of an effort to prevent illegal immigrant drivers from receiving CDL certifications. However, like fly-by-night trucking companies, these sham schools often reopen quickly under new names and false ownership.

Rep. Hageman’s SAFE Act would implement an automated tool to detect fraudulent carriers who have previously been shut down by regulators but are attempting to reopen under a new operating name and registration number, while still employing the same individuals and having the same ownership. If adopted, the bill would also enhance coordination between state and federal agencies, a key point of contention over several of the recent fatal crashes caused by illegal immigrants, with New York and California trying to blame federal databases for erroneously issued CDLs.

Hi Keith, The team and I have been home for about two weeks now, settling back into the familiar rhythms of home and work after our time in Antarctica.

Our attention has turned to the return of samples and cargo, to the first careful look at the observations and data we gathered during our stay at Untersee, and towards planning the analyses of samples now making their way back to various labs.

Even so, field work does not really end with the journey home.

The next field season is already on the horizon, only seven months away, and this pause becomes both practical and reflective – a time to take stock of what we accomplished, to begin sorting through results, and to look ahead.

Work like this unfolds as a continuum, each field season building on the last while guiding our way back to Untersee as we refine our understanding of that remarkable ecosystem.

For many years, we have used Antarctica as a place to think about isolation, logistics, human factors, life-support constraints, enabling technologies such as remotely operated vehicles and telepresence, and the realities of conducting meaningful research far from easy rescue or resupply.

Those lessons have shaped and informed many of our efforts to use Antarctic field research as a model for planetary exploration and for scientific and operational investigations relevant to the Moon and Mars.

Our studies within these relatively rare ice-free oases are scientifically compelling in their own right, but they also offer something more. They provide settings for thinking about planetary exploration in grounded, practical ways.

Our work has shown that these perennially ice-covered lake environments can serve as useful models for understanding similar lakes and oceans that may once have existed on Mars, or within the oceans of the icy moons of Juipter or Saturn, while Antarctic field camps more broadly provide places where humans and machines – scientific instruments, robotics, and related systems – can be tested together in remote, demanding conditions while carrying out real science.

Over the years, through our exobiology-related research in these Antarctic oases, we’ve tried to carry those lessons forward – not only through the science itself, but through what these places reveal about exploration, communication, resilience, and the discipline needed to work together as a team in remote settings.

Looking back at those final images from beneath the ice, I was also reminded that important essons do not always come from scientific instruments or samples alone.

The Netherlands is investigating whether Iran was involved in an attack on a synagogue in Rotterdam, Justice Minister David van Weel said on Tuesday.

“The possibility that Iran is involved in this attack is being explicitly investigated,”van Weel told parliament, adding there was no conclusive link at this stage.

Dutch prosecutors said four suspects aged 17 to 19 were arrested shortly after an arson attack caused a fire at the synagogue early on Friday, adding the act was carried out with terrorist intent.

Van Weel said the suspects had most likely been recruited.

The incident was one of several recent attacks in the Netherlands, including one targeting a Jewish school in Amsterdam, while a synagogue in Liege, Belgium, was also attacked.

The attacks caused no injuries but have led to increased security at Jewish sites.

Authorities are also examining whether the incidents are linked, while an extremist group has claimed responsibility on social media, though police have not confirmed its involvement.

Hera on course for asteroid rendezvous

A successful deep-space manoeuvre has put ESA’s Hera spacecraft on course for its rendezvous with the Didymos binary asteroid system later this year.

The European Space Agency’s (ESA) Hera spacecraft is on its way to the only asteroids in existence whose orbits have been deliberately altered by human action.

At the Didymos binary system, Hera will help scientists answer the questions remaining after NASA’s DART spacecraft impacted Didymos’ smaller moon Dimorphos.

In doing so, Hera will help to transform asteroid deflection by kinetic impact into a well-understood and repeatable technique for protecting Earth.

Hera recently completed the second of two deep-space manoeuvres on its journey from Earth to Didymos.

The manoeuvre burned 123 kg of onboard hydrazine fuel and changed the spacecraft’s velocity by 367 m/s – a change comparable to an object accelerating from stationary to supersonic flight.

“We divided the deep space manoeuvre into three engine burns, plus one much smaller correction manoeuvre, carried out over a period of around four weeks,” says Francesco Castellini from the Flight Dynamics team at ESA’s European Space Operations Centre in Germany.

“This is the Hera mission’s largest manoeuvre in terms of fuel consumption, and we used it to test all of the systems that we will need during the braking and rendezvous manoeuvres later this year as we arrive at Didymos.”

Tracking data from ESA’s Estrack network of deep space antennas confirmed the success of the manoeuvre, and downlinked telemetry from the spacecraft shows that all subsystems performed as expected.

With the deep-space manoeuvre complete, the Hera team has its sights set on arrival at Didymos. Extensive onboard software updates have been designed to prepare the spacecraft for close-proximity operations at the asteroids.

The update adds and improves functionalities that Hera will need to carry out humankind’s first thorough survey of a binary asteroid, such as new software for Hera’s laser altimeter – which will continuously monitor its distance from the asteroids – and for the monitoring camera that will visually monitor and confirm the release of Hera’s two CubeSats.

“Uploading new software to Hera across deep space is like having a video call with a friend on Mars at just 0.004% the speed of a typical home internet connection and with a twenty-minute time delay between speaking and hearing your friend’s response,” says Anna Schiavo from the Hera Flight Control Team.

“Sending the software to the spacecraft, which is just the first step in the overall software update, will take around three hours.”

In October, Hera will begin a series of precisely timed burns to transition from interplanetary cruise to asteroid rendezvous.

Unlike larger deep-space destinations such as planets, Didymos and Dimorphos are small, dark and hard to see: Hera will need to actively search for the asteroids and keep them centred in its field of view as it navigates towards them.

The approach will last around three weeks and will test Hera’s guidance, navigation and control systems to the fullest.

For the second time in less than a year, U.S. District Judge Brian E. Murphy of Boston has inserted himself between the elected executive branch and its constitutional authority to govern, issuing a sweeping injunction Monday that blocks Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. from implementing common-sense reforms to the nation’s childhood vaccine advisory structure.

The ruling, which freezes both a revised immunization schedule and Kennedy’s reconstitution of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, is the latest episode in a troubling pattern: a midnight Biden appointee wielding judicial power as a political weapon against a duly elected administration.

Judge Murphy’s record speaks for itself. In the spring of 2025, Murphy issued a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump administration from deporting violent criminal aliens to third countries. Whenthe Supreme Court stayed that injunction by a vote of 6 to 3,Murphy simply declared that a separate remedial order he had issued was unaffected by the high court’s ruling and continued to block the deportations.

The Supreme Court was forced to rebuke him a second time, by a remarkable 7 to 2 margin, warning that further defiance would not be tolerated. Justice Elena Kagan, a liberal, joined that majority rebuke. Even the court’s most left-leaning members could not defend what Murphy had done.

Now the same judge has turned his sights on public health policy, an area squarely within the executive’s discretionary authority. Kennedy, exercising his statutory powers as HHS Secretary, took two reasonable and defensible actions.

First, he removed and replaced the members of ACIP, the advisory panel that shapes vaccine recommendations. Second, he oversaw a revision of the childhood immunization schedule, reducing the number of recommended vaccines from 17 to 11.Both actions were consistent with the administration’s mandate to scrutinize federal health policy with fresh eyes, and both reflect the kind of executive reorganization that every incoming administration undertakes as a matter of course.

Murphy found this process likely violated the Federal Advisory Committee Act and that bypassing ACIP when revising the schedule was arbitrary and capricious. But his legal reasoning deserves scrutiny.

The Secretary of HHS has broad authority to manage the department’s advisory infrastructure. FACA imposes procedural requirements on advisory committees, but those requirements have never been interpreted to strip a cabinet secretary of the power to reconstitute a panel whose membership had grown stale and whose recommendations had calcified into something approaching uncritical orthodoxy.

Murphy’s reading of the statute is, to put it charitably, aggressive, and his track record with aggressive readings of federal law has not been good. TheSupreme Court has already corrected him once for misreading immigration statutes. There is every reason to expect the appellate courts will do so again here.

The political timing of this ruling is impossible to ignore. Murphy was confirmed by the narrowest of margins, 47 to 45, in the final days of the Democratic Senate’s lame-duck sessionin December 2024, rushed through by Senator Chuck Schumer before Republicans took control.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) - In line with the ongoing Department of War-driven Acquisition Transformation, the Space Force has designated its second tranche of mission areas that will be assigned Portfolio Acquisition Executives, including:

Infrastructure; Battle Management, Command, Control, Communication and Space Intelligence; Satellite Communication and Positioning, Navigation and Timing; and Missile Warning and Tracking.

These PAEs, along with the Space Access and Space Based Sensing and Targeting PAEs that were part of the initial tranche announced January 2026, will report to the Secretary of the Air Force through the Space Service Acquisition Executive.

“To win in the long run we must innovate faster than our adversaries,” said Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink.

“These next six PAEs will allow us to do just that by capitalizing on the right talent, giving them the resources they need and empowering them to deliver mission effective capability to the warfighter faster.”

The portfolios are designed to prioritize the speed of delivery of combat-effective capabilities within their mission area.

For each PAE, those mission areas are:

• Space Access: delivering national security, civil and commercial capabilities to orbit

• Space Based Sensing and Targeting: delivering persistent space-based battlespace awareness

• Infrastructure: delivering data management, Space Force training and test capabilities, and personnel management capabilities

• BMC3I: delivering cross-cutting capabilities such as data, networks, C2, intelligence and space domain awareness to detect, characterize, attribute, anticipate and target activities

• SATCOM and PNT: delivering resilient commercial and military satellite communications and integrated PNT capabilities

• Missile Warning and Tracking: delivering diverse, integrated, and resilient missile warning and tracking space architecture

“By clarifying priorities and empowering leaders, the Space Force is positioning itself to outpace adversaries and secure U.S. interests in, from and to space,” said Thomas Ainsworth, performing the duties of the assistant secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration.

A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Cuba early on Tuesday (17 March), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

Major General Antonio Aguto was found to have mishandled secrets and suffered a concussion after excessive drinking on a trip to Kiev

The US Army general who oversaw Washington’s military assistance to Ukraine left classified maps on a train in Europe and suffered a concussion after a night of heavy drinking, according to a recently released report by the Pentagon Inspector General.

Retired Major General Antonio Aguto Jr. commanded the Germany-based Security Assistance Group-Ukraine (SAG-U) from its activation in November 2022 until August 2024.

The unit, consisting of approximately 300 personnel, was responsible for coordinating the training and equipping of Ukrainian forces.

According to the 56-page report published on Friday, based on interviews with Aguto and 33 witnesses following anonymous complaints, the general improperly handled classified materials during an April 2024 trip to Ukraine.

Aguto brought a tube of maps classified as ‘Secret’ to Kiev, but, on the return journey from Ukraine to Germany, his party left them behind on the train when they disembarked in Poland.

The documents were recovered 24 hours later by the US Embassy in Ukraine when the train returned.

A month later, during another trip to Ukraine, Aguto attended a six-hour dinner in Kiev described as a military engagement. Witnesses reported he drank approximately two 500ml bottles of chacha, a Georgian brandy containing 40-50% alcohol.

That evening, Aguto fell in his hotel room, striking his head, then fell again in the early morning and a third time en route to the US Embassy, tearing his jacket and hitting his jaw.

The next day, he appeared at a meeting with then-Secretary of State Antony Blinken looking “completely disheveled” and “out of it,” slurring his words and acting “cognitively diminished.” He was later diagnosed with a moderate-to-severe concussion.

Investigators determined the falls resulted from “overindulgence in alcohol,” finding that Aguto violated Defense Department policies. The general disagreed, claiming he had received verbal permission from his superior.

Aguto relinquished command in August 2024 and retired shortly after.

His service coincided with the massive military support campaign for Ukraine led by then-US President Joe Biden, which included billions in weapons and other assistance.

Moscow has consistently condemned Western military aid to Kiev, arguing it only prolongs the conflict without changing its inevitable outcome.

Kiev has rejected proposals for a meeting, Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has said

Ukraine is refusing to resume oil supplies via the Druzhba pipeline for purely political reasons despite the infrastructure being fully functional, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on Tuesday.

He added that Kiev has declined a proposed trilateral meeting with Hungary and Slovakia to discuss the issue.

The Ukrainian authorities are preventing vital Russian oil from reaching Hungary and Slovakia via the Druzhba pipeline, which runs through Ukraine, claiming it was damaged by Russian strikes – allegations Moscow rejects.

Budapest and Bratislava have accused Kiev of blackmail and also say Brussels has sided with Ukraine instead of backing the two EU member states.

“It has become really obvious that there is no technical or physical reason for the oil supply not to be restarted to Hungary through the Druzhba pipeline,” Szijjarto said at a press conference in Brussels, accusing Kiev of making “a pure political decision.”

The minister added that a trilateral meeting with the Ukrainian Minister of Energy in Brussels initiated by Budapest and Bratislava was “cancelled again by the Ukrainians.”

He highlighted that Kiev has rejected all the initiatives taken by Hungary, Slovakia and even by the EU to allow a site visit to see the actual state of the pipeline.

Szijjarto reiterated that a delegation from the Hungarian Energy Ministry spent more than three days in Ukraine last week, but all requests for meetings with Ukrainian energy officials were rejected by Kiev.

“So, you know, I can’t tell you anything, but if a country keeps us under an oil blockade, then that given country cannot expect us to support any decisions here in Brussels in favor of them,” the minister said. “That’s the case.”

In response to Kiev halting supplies through the Soviet-built pipeline, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban vetoed a new round of EU sanctions against Russia and blocked the €90 billion ($105 billion) loan package.

On Monday, Szijjarto confirmed that Budapest would continue to oppose the bailout for Ukraine until Kiev resumes oil supplies.

Hungary, a longstanding opponent of Ukraine’s EU membership bid, has consistently refused to send weapons to Kiev or approve EU military aid, calling instead for a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

The National Investigating Agency has reportedly detained the group on suspicion that they aided insurgents in Myanmar

India’s anti-terrorism agency has arrested six Ukrainians and an American for alleged links with insurgents in Myanmar.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken the group into custody for questioning, with a Delhi court ordering their detention until March 27, the New Indian Express (NIE) reported on Tuesday.

The NIA is probing their alleged illegal entry into India and involvement in terrorist activities in the restive north-eastern part of the country.

According to the report, three of the Ukrainian citizens were arrested in Delhi, and the rest in the northern Indian city of Lucknow.

The US citizen was arrested in the eastern city of Kolkata.

The NIA suspects that the foreign nationals entered Mizoram in India’s north-east, before crossing over to Myanmar, where they allegedly came in contact with ethnic insurgent groups linked to violence in India.

The group are also accused of bringing a large consignment of drones from Europe, according to the NIE report.

The federal government announced in 2024 that a national counter-terrorism policy and strategy were being drafted to counter the terrorist ecosystem.

Following the terror attack in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in April last year, the NIA held discussions with anti-terrorism units from all states to brief them on steps aimed at preventing such attacks.

Terrorist cells operating from abroad tap the infrastructure, logistics, and terrain knowledge of local groups, according to a policy document from the Indian Home Ministry.
