Ex-FBI agent says he witnessed politicization of bureau, warned about improper surveillance

Retired Special Agent Bassem Youssef, who ran the FBI’s Communications Analysis Unit from late 2004 until late 2014, witnessed agents hired under Jim Comey's watch, for political leanings and warned of potential for abuse of surveillance programs. Those warnings were ignored.

The former FBI agent who ran the bureau’s warrantless spying program said this week that he personally witnessed the director and other senior officials recruiting agents based on political leanings, not qualifications, during Director James Comey’s tenure.

Bassem Youssef, a retired special agent who ran the FBI’s Communications Analysis Unit from late 2004 until his retirement in late 2014, also says he warned senior officials about the potential for civil liberties abuses in the surveillance program that he oversaw, but said neither Comey nor the White House took his warnings seriously.

FBI's improper — possibly illegal — snooping

The FBI’s surveillance practices have been back under a microscope in recent months. FBI records released by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, last year showed the bureau snooped on phone records of Republican elected officials as part of its investigation into Jan. 6.

Just the News also reported in February that the Government Accountability Office assessed that the FBI opened 1,200 probes related to politicians, journalists, religious leaders, academics and others tied to “sensitive investigative matters,” using a special investigative tool that required no factual predicate to launch. The vast majority of those probes were closed without accusations of wrongdoing or criminal charges against those targets being scrutinized.

Youssef told the Just the News, No Noise TV show on Tuesday that he believes the failure of the bureau to learn from past intelligence collection mistakes, like in the Trump-Russia probe whose underlying allegations were later discredited, is because FBI leadership had begun to hire employees based on political leanings rather than merit or capability.

Comey's "soft recruitment of people of like mind"

“When I worked in the bureau, in field offices, and then eventually at FBI Headquarters, where I oversaw the Communications Analysis Unit that there was already a process where you could see that from the highest levels of the FBI, meaning the director's office and the executive assistant, directors that there is a soft recruitment of people of like mind that didn't necessarily meet the requirements for the job, but they were recruited because of their leaning, which was, in fact, very politically motivated,” Youssef said.

Just the News reported this week that President Trump and his supporters were targeted by four consecutive FBI code-named counterintelligence investigations over the last decade that subjected hundreds of Americans to privacy-invading tactics and essentially treated the man twice elected president as a national security threat for most of the first nine years of his political career.

FBI Director Kash Patel has led an effort in the administration to review the four operations code-named Crossfire Hurricane, Round River, Plasmic Echo and Arctic Frost that stretched from summer 2016 to January 2025.

Those who have seen the records told Just the News they chronicle how the FBI's expanded counterterrorism and counterintelligence missions after the Sept, 11, 2001, terrorist attacks eventually became hijacked by politics and led agents to deploy tools meant for terrorists and spies against everyday Americans in a bid to find a way to bring criminal cases against Trump.

“It tells you that the FBI, unfortunately, during the previous administration has cast a wide drag net that got so many people who were not involved in any way,” Youssef told Just the News. “And I hate to use that word, but it's really framing those people for some kind of malfeasance when there really wasn't in the first place.”

Before Youssef departed the bureau in 2014, he approached then-Director Comey to warn that he saw the potential for civil rights abuses in the FBI’s warrantless surveillance, which he oversaw from his perch atop the Communications Analysis Unit.

Snowden's leaks raised, but given mere lip service by Obama

“I had been trying to brief the director at that time, it was Comey, of this special program, the program that was leaked by Snowden, if you remember, in 2012 and the executive assistant director under him was blocking me from briefing him,” Youssef said.

Thomas Thompson, now 73, was sent to prison in 2015 after he refused to tell a federal judge, his own lawyers, and his investors where he hid a collection of gold coins and bars he discovered on the shipwreck of the S.S. Central America, according to local outlet The Columbus Dispatch.

Along with the wreck itself, Thompson allegedly found over $100 million worth of gold coins and bars, the location of which he never shared with his investors. The investors filed a lawsuit against Thompson in 2005, claiming that he sold $50 million worth of the gold without paying them.

Thompson claimed that the coins were turned over a trust in Belize and that the $50 million he made in the first sale went toward legal fees and bank loans, and claimed that he did not know where the rest of the gold was, per AP.

Four Military Drones Stolen from Fort Campbell in Kentucky

In a post on the U.S. Army Fort Campbell Facebook Page, a spokesperson wrote that four Skydio X10D Drone Systems were stolen from the 326th Division Engineer Battalion building.

The Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division is offering a reward for information that leads to the conviction of those behind the theft.

The drones were originally stolen in November of last year, but Fort Campbell released information and surveillance photos to the public on March 11.

The U.S. Army Fort Campbell is reporting the theft of four drone systems, and it needs your help to locate the suspects.

According to a social media post by the U.S. Army Fort Campbell, the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division is offering $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the theft.

Fort Campbell states the theft involved four Skydio X10D drone systems.

The drone systems were last seen on November 21, 2025 at the 326th Division Engineer Battalion at Building 6955 on A Shau Valley Road in Fort Campbell, according to the post.

Between November 21-24, 2025, Fort Campbell states unknown individuals unlawfully accessed the building and took the drones.

The report of the stolen drones came just 24 hours before ABC News reported that the FBI had released a bulletin that warned California police departments that Iran may try to attack the Golden State with drones.

A Florida Republican gubernatorial candidate has taken his grievances to social media, claiming that Waffle House has banned him from its locations across the state.

James Fishback, who is running to succeed fellow Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis as the next governor, said that the restaurant chain criminally trespassed on him and his team from all of its locations in Florida after he told his followers on the "Tucker Carlson Show" in January that he'd be touring every Waffle House across the state to speak to voters.

At the time of his announcement, Fishback, 31, said Waffle House allowed him to do just that.

However, on March 4, Waffle House "abruptly revoked our permission," Fishback said, adding, "I am disappointed in Waffle House's decision, especially since they had given us explicit permission to visit their restaurants just 3 weeks ago."

Before Waffle House's decision, Fishback had visited locations in Madison, St. Pete, Bonifay, Marianna and Jacksonville.

James Fishback, CEO and co-founder of Azoria Partners, says he intends to run for Florida governor in 2026.

In an email to USA TODAY on March 11, Fishback confirmed that his permission was still revoked. USA TODAY emailed Waffle House on Wednesday, but has not received a response.

Fishback said he'd be fighting the decision by launching his own version of a Waffle House called the "Fishback Waffle Home," a no-cost, pop-up restaurant coming to select cities in Florida to "keep meeting voters over hot coffee and warm waffles."

"I want to thank the Waffle House staff who greeted me and our supporters, with warmth, kindness and awesome food," Fishback wrote in the statement.

Florida gubernatorial election

Florida will elect its next governor on Nov. 3. DeSantis cannot run for the office again because the state's constitution limits governors to serving two consecutive terms.

The primary will be held Aug. 18, in which residents will select their candidates for the general election.

The U.S. Navy hospital ship USNS Mercy is currently sailing north along the West Coast off Mexico after transiting the Panama Canal last week, according to the latest Automatic Identification System (AIS) data.

Recent AIS signals show the 1,000-bed hospital ship underway in the eastern Pacific and making steady progress northbound after its canal passage, confirming the southbound track observed in late February was consistent with a Pacific repositioning rather than a direct route toward the North Atlantic.

The latest AIS data offers the clearest indication yet of where the vessel may ultimately be headed following President Donald Trump’s controversial remarks about sending a hospital ship to Greenland.

Mercy departed Alabama Shipyard in Mobile in late February following a short drydock period tied to ballast tank repairs. AIS data at the time showed the vessel making about 10.8 knots on a south-southeast course through the central Gulf of Mexico toward the Yucatán Channel—movement widely interpreted as a likely transit toward the Panama Canal rather than a diversion toward the U.S. East Coast or the Arctic.

A few days later, the vessel was captured on webcam in the Panama Canal’s Gatun Locks, heading southbound towards the Pacific, on March 2.

The ship’s movements drew intense attention after President Trump posted on social media late last month that the United States would send a hospital ship to Greenland, declaring the vessel was “on the way.” The proposal sparked confusion among officials and a sharp response from Greenland’s leadership, who emphasized the territory’s universal healthcare system and said no such deployment had been requested.

Operational realities also cast doubt on the feasibility of a Greenland mission. Mercy is a converted oil tanker without an ice-strengthened hull and has never operated in Arctic waters, where late-winter sea ice and drifting icebergs present significant hazards for non-ice-rated ships. Ports such as Nuuk also offer limited under-keel clearance for a vessel of Mercy’s size and draft.

Instead, the hospital ship’s current northbound track aligns with its previously scheduled maintenance availability at Vigor Industrial in Portland, Oregon. The ship is expected to undergo a major shipyard period lasting several months as part of a roughly $90 million overhaul program.

While Mercy’s AIS voyage fields still do not publicly list a destination, the vessel’s track along the U.S. West Coast is consistent with a repositioning toward the Pacific Northwest ahead of the planned yard work.

Mercy is one of two hospital ships operated by the U.S. Navy’s Military Sealift Command and can accommodate up to 1,000 patients with 12 operating rooms when fully activated.

The East-West Pipeline, also known as the Petroline, is a 746 miles (1,201 km)-long 48 inches (120 cm) pipeline that runs from the Abqaiq oil field in the Eastern Province (near Bahrain and Qatar on the Persian Gulf coast) across the width of the Arabian Peninsula to the Red Sea. 3I/ATLAS is Fading Away, Leaving Us to Ponder Over Its 22 Mysterious Anomalies

The interstellar object 3I/ATLAS is fading away. It will get closest to Jupiter on March 16, 2026 and then head out of the Solar System in a nearly symmetric fashion to the way it came in.

I say `nearly symmetric’ because 3I/ATLAS exhibited a small non-gravitational acceleration, owing to a remarkable system of jets.

The passage of 3I/ATLAS on a retrograde orbit within 5 degrees of the ecliptic plane provided an ideal opportunity for a spacecraft to intercept its path, take a close-up photograph, collect a sample from it, or even plant a capsule full of technology or life-as-we-know-it in its belly and hitchhike it to interstellar space at 60 kilometers per second — twice as fast as our fastest rockets. We missed all of this rare opportunity.

We should aim to do better in our next encounter with a mysterious interstellar object. But given the rare properties of 3I/ATLAS, it is unclear whether we will be given such an opportunity any time soon. So long, our interstellar friend.

The nature of 3I/ATLAS is intriguing because of the following 22 anomalies:

Mass Budget Discrepancy:

1. The inferred nucleus diameter of 2.6 kilometers and number density of its parent population (assuming a natural comet) exceed the mass reservoir of planetary disks around low-metallicity stars (as inferred here and here) by orders of magnitude. More details are available here.

Geometric Rarities:

2. The retrograde trajectory of 3I/ATLAS is aligned to within 5 degrees with the orbital plane of the planets around the Sun, with a probability of 0.2% (as discussed here).

The Milky-Way disk is misaligned with the ecliptic plane by about 60 degrees. This suggests that the trajectory of 3I/ATLAS may have been planned.

NASA’s Van Allen Probe A re-entered Earth’s atmosphere at 6:37 a.m. EDT on Wednesday, March 11, almost 14 years after launch.

From 2012 to 2019, the spacecraft and its twin, Van Allen Probe B, flew through the Van Allen belts, rings of charged particles trapped by Earth’s magnetic field, to understand how particles were gained and lost.

The belts shield Earth from cosmic radiation, solar storms, and the constantly streaming solar wind that are harmful to humans and can damage technology, so understanding them is important.

Originally designed for a two-year mission, the Van Allen Probes A and B launched on Aug. 30, 2012, and gathered unprecedented data on Earth’s two permanent radiation belts — named for scientist James Van Allen — for almost seven years.

NASA ended the mission after the two spacecraft ran out of fuel and were no longer able to orient themselves toward the Sun. 

The U.S. Space Force confirmed that the Van Allen Probe spacecraft re-entered the atmosphere over the eastern Pacific Ocean region, at approximately 2 degrees south latitude and 255.3 degrees east longitude.

NASA expected most of the spacecraft to burn up as it traveled through the atmosphere, but some components may have survived re-entry.

The Van Allen Probes were the first spacecraft designed to operate and gather scientific data for many years within the belts, a region around our planet where most spacecraft and astronaut missions minimize time in order to avoid damaging radiation. 

The NASA mission, managed and operated by Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, made several major discoveries about how the radiation belts operate during its lifetime, including the first data showing the existence of a transient third radiation belt, which can form during times of intense solar activity. 

When the mission ended in 2019, analysis found that the spacecraft would re-enter Earth’s atmosphere in 2034. However, those calculations were made before the current solar cycle, which has proven far more active than expected.

In 2024, scientists confirmed the Sun had reached its solar maximum, triggering intense space weather events. These conditions increased atmospheric drag on the spacecraft beyond initial estimates, resulting in an earlier-than-expected re-entry.

Data from NASA’s Van Allen Probes mission still plays an important role in understanding space weather and its effects.

By reviewing archived data from the mission, scientists study the radiation belts surrounding Earth, which are key to predicting how solar activity impacts satellites, astronauts, and even systems on Earth such as communications, navigation, and power grids.

By observing these dynamic regions, the Van Allen Probes contributed to improving forecasts of space weather events and their potential consequences.

Van Allen Probe B, the twin of the re-entering spacecraft, is not expected to re-enter before 2030.

NASA flight engineers Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway kicked off their shift with vein scans inside the Columbus laboratory module.

Meir led the Venous Flow biomedical study operating the new Ultrasound 3 device and scanning Hathaway’s veins while he wore electrodes on his chest measuring his heart activity.

Doctors are investigating space-caused blood flow changes that may lead to an increased risk of blood clots in astronauts.

Meir also partnered with flight engineer Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) and filled out a questionnaire to document their sleep patterns then collected their saliva samples for preservation in a science freezer and later analysis.

Meir later took a cognition test to understand how living in weightlessness affects a crew member’s spatial orientation, visual tracking, decision making, and more for the Standard Measures study.

Adenot and Meir worked together throughout Wednesday readying the Cygnus XL cargo spacecraft for its detachment from the Unity module and release into Earth orbit at 7:05 a.m. on Thursday with the Canadarm2 robotic arm.

Adenot configured hardware that will enable Cygnus XL to be disconnected from Unity then closed the spacecraft’s hatch. Meir set up the equipment that will depressurize Cygnus XL in advance of its departure.

Meir’s main task, however, was working with NASA flight engineer Chris Williams in the Quest airlock to configure the tools they will use on an upcoming spacewalk to ready the orbital outpost for a new roll-out solar array.

Meir and Williams will work in the vacuum of space to install a modification kit and route cables on the port side of the orbital outpost. The external maintenance work will enable the next roll-out solar array to be installed on a later spacewalk after it is delivered on a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.

Williams and Hathaway then joined flight engineer Sophie Adenot of ESA (European Space Agency) and trained on a computer for the Canadarm2 robotic arm maneuvers necessary to support the spacewalkers.

The Roscosmos cosmonauts also worked on their portion of cardiac research adding to the biomedical data scientists from around the world collect and use to understand how living in space affects vascular health.

Commander Sergey Kud-Sverchkov and flight engineer Sergei Mikaev once again took turns wearing sensors on their forehead, fingers, and toes that sent their blood flow data by Bluetooth adaptor to a laptop computer for analysis.

Flight engineer Andrey Fedyaev began a 24-hour health monitoring session wearing electrodes and cuffs that recorded his heart’s electrical activity and blood pressure.

A third-party arbitrator is ordering the Social Security Administration to restore telework for many of its employees, after the agency indefinitely suspended workplace flexibilities under the Trump administration.

The arbitrator, in an order signed on Wednesday, directed SSA to restore telework for employees represented by the American Federation of Government Employees. The ruling brings back telework to levels that had been in place before mid-March 2025.

Early in his second term, President Donald Trump ordered all federal employees to return to the office full-time. Before this mandate, SSA employees represented by AFGE were generally allowed to telework about two days a week.

Arbitrator Sarah Miller Espinosa found that SSA violated its 2019 National Agreement with the American Federation of Government Employees when the agency stopped telework for many of its bargaining unit members.

“The agency’s breach of its commitment, which meant thousands of employees were mandated to forego approved telework and return indefinitely to full-time in-person work, clearly went to the heart of the parties’ agreement,” Espinosa wrote.

While the labor contract gives SSA management the discretion to temporarily pause telework in limited cases, Espinosa wrote that the agency’s actions “did not comport with any reasonable interpretation of ‘temporarily suspend’ based on operational needs,” and amounted to a “clear and patent breach” of its collective bargaining agreement with the union.

Espinosa also ordered SSA to “cease and desist from further violations” of its collective bargaining agreement with AFGE.

The arbitrator’s ruling won’t have an immediate impact on SSA’s workforce. An SSA spokesperson said in a statement that the agency “strongly disagrees with today’s flawed decision,” and will appeal it to the Federal Labor Relations Authority, which has a majority of Trump appointees.

“The federal government has a return to in-person work mandate. SSA has realized significant improvements in our performance, providing better, faster customer service for the American people through hands-on work and hands-on management,” the spokesperson said.

“Our federal workforce is stronger when we are in person, working shoulder-to-shoulder, serving the public,” the spokesperson added.

In March 2025, former acting Commissioner Leland Dudek told union officials that a pause on telework would only last 90 days. However, that suspension of telework extended beyond Dudek’s tenure and continued under the leadership of the current SSA commissioner, Frank Bisignano.

AFGE officials told the arbitrator that “the agency’s open-ended, indefinite suspension of telework operates as a functional elimination of regularly scheduled telework.”

Espinosa wrote that SSA “presented no testimony or persuasive documentary evidence” to determine how long this pause on telework would last, “measured either in days or months or as determined by circumstances or conditions specified by the agency.”

During the arbitration hearing, SSA didn’t call as witnesses any current or former agency officials involved in the decision to suspend telework.

Instead, the agency provided testimony from Ralph Patinella, a senior advisor to the Associate Commissioner for the Office of Labor-Management and Employee Relations, who, during his testimony, said a “temporary” suspension of telework could be “indefinite.”

Espinosa, however, rejected that claim and wrote that “by definition, temporary and indefinite are not synonymous.”

“The agency could easily have rebutted the evidence presented by the union and demonstrated that the cessation of telework was actually a suspension, that is, temporary in nature, if, in fact, that was the case,” she wrote.

“Despite ample opportunities to do so between the time of the suspension and through the hearing, however, the agency did not. The approach of ‘take our word for it’ is insufficient in light of the evidence presented.”

A provision in AFGE’s collective bargaining agreement with SSA gives agency management “sole discretion to temporarily change, reduce, or suspend approved telework day(s) for any employee(s), office, component, or agency-wide due to operational needs.”

The contract also gives agency management sole discretion to change, reduce, or suspend approved telework for any employee due to their performance.

A Most Unusual Lake

Scientists estimate that Earth is home to more than 100 million lakes. Among the most unusual is Lake Unter-See, one of Antarctica’s largest and deepest surface lakes, known for its distinctive water chemistry.

Its ice-covered waters have exceptionally high levels of dissolved oxygen, low dissolved carbon dioxide, and a strongly alkaline (basic) pH.

The OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 9 captured this image on February 16, 2026, during the Antarctic summer.

Most of the lake's water comes from seasonal meltwater draining from the margins of the nearby Anuchin Glacier, which flows south from the Gruber Mountains in Queen Maud Land.

With mean annual temperatures of about minus 10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit), Lake Unter-See remains frozen year-round, its waters sealed beneath several meters of ice.

Sunlight penetrates the ice and warms the water below, but the cold surface and strong winds drive evaporation and sublimation, preventing significant surface melting. The lake's maximum depth is thought to reach nearly 170 meters (558 feet).

The lake’s water chemistry is unusual partly because it is one of the only perennially frozen lakes with a community of large, conical stromatolites.

The layered microbial reef structures grow slowly upward as photosynthetic microbes—primarily cyanobacteria—trap sediment on their sticky surfaces and form calcium carbonate mineral crusts.

These conical stromatolites—as well as pinnacle and flat forms of the microbial communities—release oxygen that becomes trapped under the ice, increasing its concentration in the lake.

Lake Unter-See's stromatolites, discovered by SETI geobiologist Dale Andersen and colleagues in 2011, offer a glimpse into a time more than 3 billion years ago, when microbes were the only form of life on Earth.

The formations are thought to be modern, living examples of the organisms that likely produced some of Earth's oldest fossils—stromatolites found in places such as southwestern Greenland and western Australia.

Some Antarctic lakes, such as Lake Joyce in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, contain conical stromatolites, but they reach only a few centimeters tall. By contrast, the formations in Lake Unter-See tower up to half a meter.

Scientists think Unter-See's stromatolites grow unusually tall because they are sheltered from tides and waves beneath permanent ice, live in exceptionally clear waters with little sediment, grow toward limited light, and face little grazing.

The lake’s largest creatures are tardigrades—microscopic "water bear" invertebrates known for their ability to survive in extreme environments.

Astrobiologists also point to the lake as a possible analog for the type of environment where life might have formed or survived on icy moons with oceans such as Europa and Enceladus, or perhaps on Mars, which has ice caps and glaciers.

Yet despite its seemingly stable conditions, Lake Unter-See occasionally experiences abrupt changes. During fieldwork in 2019, researchers observed an increase in the lake’s water levels.

The team, led by scientists at the University of Ottawa, later analyzed elevation data from NASA’s ICESat-2 (Ice, Cloud, and Land Elevation Satellite-2) and confirmed a 2-meter rise was caused by a glacial lake outburst flood from nearby Lake Ober-See.

The University of Ottawa team also showed that the outburst flood had released 17.5 million cubic meters of meltwater, altering Unter-See’s pH and replenishing it with carbon dioxide-rich waters that likely enhanced the productivity of the lake's microbial life.

The scientists noted that similar periodic flooding may provide "biological stimuli to other carbon dioxide-depleted Antarctic ecosystems and perhaps even icy lakes on early Mars.”

Dust Outbreak Reaches Europe

Winter winds lofted clouds of dust from the Sahara Desert, carrying it north toward the Mediterranean and dispersing it widely across Europe in March 2026.

When the dust combined with moisture-laden weather systems, a dirty rain fell in parts of Spain, France, and the United Kingdom.

This animation highlights the concentration and movement of dust throughout the region from March 1 to March 9.

It depicts dust column mass density—a measure of the amount of dust contained in a column of air—produced with a version of the GEOS (Goddard Earth Observing System) model.

The model integrates satellite data with mathematical equations that represent physical processes in the atmosphere.

The animation shows dust plumes originating in northwestern Africa being blown both to the west across the Atlantic Ocean and north toward the Mediterranean.

As plumes spread throughout Western Europe over several days, people observed hazy skies from southern England, where sunrises and sunsets took on an eerie glow, to the Alps in Switzerland and Italy, where a dust layer encroached on the Matterhorn.

Not all of the dust remained aloft. Storms encountered some of the dust, causing particles to fall to the ground with rain and coat surfaces with a brownish residue.

A low-pressure system, named Storm Regina by Portugal’s weather service, moved across the Iberian Peninsula and brought so-called blood rain to southern and eastern Spain, along with parts of France and the southern UK in early March, according to news reports.

Over the Mediterranean, areas of “dusty cirrus” clouds developed higher in the atmosphere, where dust particles can act as condensation nuclei for ice crystals, according to MeteoSwiss, Switzerland’s Federal Office for Meteorology and Climatology.

Scientists are studying these clouds to better understand their formation and how they affect weather, climate, and even solar power generation.

In a new analysis, researchers used NASA’s MERRA-2 (Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2), observations from MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), and other satellite products to parse the effect of airborne Saharan dust on solar power in Hungary.

They found that photovoltaic performance dropped to 46 percent on high-dust days, compared with 75 percent or more on low-dust days.

They determined the greatest losses occurred because dust enhanced the presence and reflectance of cirrus clouds and reduced the amount of radiation that reached solar panels.

Some research suggests more frequent and intense wintertime dust events have affected Europe in recent years.

Researchers have proposed several factors contributing to these outbreaks, including drier-than-normal conditions in northwestern Africa and weather patterns more often driving winds north from the Sahara.

Webb Spots Details in Nearby Spiral Galaxy

Stars peek through the dusty, winding arms of NGC 5134, a spiral galaxy located 65 million light-years away, in this Feb. 20, 2026, image from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

Webb’s Mid-Infrared Instrument collects the mid-infrared light emitted by the warm dust speckled through the galaxy’s clouds, tracing the clumps and strands of dusty gas.

The telescope’s Near Infrared Camera records shorter-wavelength near-infrared light, mostly from the stars and star clusters that dot the galaxy’s spiral arms.

By using Webb to study the infrared light nearby galaxies like NGC 5134 whose stars and gas can be seen in detail, astronomers can apply their knowledge to galaxies too distant to be observed so closely — like those that are scattered in the background of this image, barely more than points of light.

NASA Marshall Lunar, Meteor Observatory Marks 20 Years of Discovery

For a fraction of a second, a tiny rock traveling through space can strike the lunar surface or streak across the sky producing a brief burst of light.

With clear skies and the right technology, these bursts can be observed from Earth. For 20 years, a stargazing outpost at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, has been quietly scanning the sky, watching for these flashes.

This is the Automated Lunar and Meteor Observatory, better known as the ALaMO.

The observatory saw its “first light” on March 12, 2006, beginning two decades of observations supporting NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office in tracking meteors and monitoring impacts on the Moon.

These observations help researchers better understand the hazards spacecraft and astronauts may encounter beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

The ALaMO includes two domes, a 15-meter (50-foot) observation tower with a roll-off roof, and an operations center that enables coordinated observations of meteors and lunar impacts.

Watching the Moon for Impact Flashes

Just months after beginning operations, the ALaMO recorded its first lunar impact flash on May 2, 2006. Since then, NASA Marshall astronomers have observed more than 400 impacts on the lunar surface.

One of the observatory’s most notable observations occurred on March 17, 2013, when the ALaMO detected a bright flash caused by a bowling ball-sized meteoroid striking the Moon.

Follow-up imagery from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter later confirmed a newly formed crater roughly 60 feet wide, making this the first time the formation of a lunar impact crater was directly observed.

Tracking Fireballs Across Earth’s Sky

The ALaMO also plays an important role in studying meteors closer to Earth. In 2008, the first all-sky camera installed at the observatory helped launch the NASA All Sky Fireball Network.

The network includes 15 cameras across the United States that capture bright meteors streaking across the night sky.

In 2025, the ALaMO underwent a major refit, installing four new cameras that are part of the Global Meteor Network.

The worldwide network includes roughly 1,300 cameras that allow scientists to study meteoroids using observations collected across the globe rather than relying only on local skies and weather conditions.

Occasionally, the cameras also record unexpected nighttime visitors passing in front of the lenses, from owls and frogs to spiders and snails! Check out our best shots.

Contributing to Asteroid Research

In addition to fireball monitoring, the observatory contributes to asteroid research. The ALaMO became certified by the Minor Planet Center in 2007, supporting observations of asteroids and comets.

Between 2009 and 2014, the observatory’s 0.5-meter telescope contributed to several asteroid occultation campaigns.

These events occur when an asteroid passes in front of a celestial body, briefly blocking its light. By measuring how long the light is obscured, scientists can determine the asteroid’s size and shape.

One such observation helped researchers determine the shape of the unique metal-rich asteroid Psyche, which NASA will be further studying through a mission of the same name.

Looking to a Bright Future

Twenty years after first light, the ALaMO continues helping scientists better understand the dynamic environment of space, from meteors streaking through Earth’s atmosphere to impacts shaping the surface of the Moon.

As NASA prepares to return humanity to the Moon, and eventually journey onward to Mars, the observatory’s work remains an important part of understanding the cosmic neighborhood future astronauts will travel through.

Trump’s New NASA Boss Says He’s ‘Gonna Build’ a Base on the Moon

President Donald Trump’s new administrator of NASA, Jared Isaacman, told Fox Business on Thursday that he intended to build a base on the moon in the coming years.

“My first day on the job, I am in the Oval Office as President Trump signs America’s space policy, America for superiority in space,” Isaacman told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo on Mornings with Maria.

“Now, my responsibility is on the, again, the civil peaceful side to it. What are we doing about it? We’re returning to the moon. We’re returning to the moon and we’re going to stay. We’re gonna build a lunar base.”

He continued, “And next up is Artemis II, which is America’s moon rocket, it’s right behind me, 8.8 million pounds of thrust, we’re gonna send four astronauts around the moon in a matter of weeks, safely back to Earth, and then we’re gonna set up for missions every year, again in ’27 until ’28, when we land on moon, and again, this time to stay.

“We’re doing the other things. We’re going nuclear power on propulsion in space so some day you can see American astronauts plant stars and stripes on Mars,” Isaacman went on.

“So this is kind of our role that we fulfil here at NASA. We’re pioneering, ensuring American leadership in the high ground of space. Then you’ve got Space Force.

They’re the ones that are standing out in the hill. They’re looking out for everyone here on Earth, and then you’ve got looking out farther into space as NASA kind of leads the way.”

Isaacman, an ally of billionaire SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, took over as administrator of NASA in December.

While President Donald Trump had initially nominated Isaacman to serve as NASA administrator back in December 2024, he withdrew the nomination in May 2025 following his explosive public feud with Musk before renominating him in November of that same year.

Alpha lifted off from Firefly’s Space Launch Complex 2 at the Vandenberg Space Force Base at 5:50 pm PDT on March 11 before completing an orbital insertion and delivering a demonstrator payload for Lockheed Martin.

Firefly’s Alpha rocket also performed a stage two engine relight and validated key Alpha Block II upgrades, including a new in-house avionics suite and enhanced thermal protection system, ahead of the full Block II configuration upgrade planned for Flight 8.

“Alpha Flight 7 was flawlessly executed with all mission requirements completed, further proving the resiliency, innovation, and passion of the Firefly team,” said Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly Aerospace.

“Over the last several months, we took a hard look at our processes across engineering, production, test, integration, and operations and invested the time required to make a series of improvements to ensure a higher level of quality and reliability in every Alpha we deliver and launch as we move to our Block II upgrade.”

The Firefly team is now working to complete the final milestones for Alpha Flight 8 that is set to launch the full Block II configuration upgrade designed to enhance reliability and manufacturability across the vehicle.

The upgrades include a 7-foot increase to Alpha’s length, consolidated batteries and avionics built in house, improved thermal protection system, and stronger carbon composite structures built with automated machinery.

“Flight 7 served as a critical opportunity to validate Alpha’s performance ahead of our Block II upgrade, and this team knocked it out of the park,” said Adam Oakes, Vice President of Launch at Firefly Aerospace.

Approximately 80 parents and daughters attended the event, giving service members an opportunity to step away from launch operations and spend dedicated time with their children.

“Our military personnel dedicate so much time to the mission,” said Capt. Subhankar Patnaik, deputy chaplain for Space Launch Delta 45.

“This event focuses on building stronger, resilient families. Tonight is about creating special memories and emotional connections between dads and their daughters that will last a lifetime.”

Since its debut in 2023, the Daddy-Daughter Dance has grown each year due to increasing demand from the military community. This year’s theme, Hollywood Glamour, transformed the venue into an evening filled with elegance and celebration.

To bring the theme to life, organizers focused on thoughtful details throughout the event. Local vendors helped ensure a smooth experience, allowing planners to concentrate on creating a memorable atmosphere for families.

From festive decorations and music to sparkling tiaras for every girl in attendance, the evening was designed to make daughters feel special.

Events like the Daddy-Daughter Dance support the Chapel Office’s mission to promote spiritual readiness and family resilience among Airmen and Guardians by strengthening relationships and building community.

According to Patnaik, one of the SLD 45 Chaplain Office’s central goals is helping develop virtuous leaders with integrity by supporting strong military families.

“Just as physical fitness is essential, spiritual fitness is also vital,” Patnaik said. “It requires intentional time and meaningful activities like this one.”

Programs such as the dance contribute to stronger spiritual, mental and social fitness within the military community, he explained.

“I want our families to be resilient, harmonious and joyful,” Patnaik said. “I’ve seen how strong families positively impact the work center and the mission.”

Beyond the celebration itself, the event also helped strengthen connections between families and the Chaplain’s Office, reinforcing that support is always available.

“We want families to know that they can call upon us at any time, and we will be there for them,” Patnaik added.

As the evening concluded, fathers and daughters left with smiles, photos and lasting memories — a reminder that even in a high-tempo operational environment, nurturing family bonds remains a cornerstone of resilience and strength across the force.

Eight medics were killed and ten other people injured when Ukrainian drones struck a medical facility in Russia’s Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), the Defense Ministry in Moscow has said.

The attack reportedly happened on March 10 at around 03:40 Moscow time when four fixed wing UAVs launched by Kiev deliberately targeted a stationary medical institution in the DPR, where more than 130 patients and around 50 medical staff were present.

According to the MOD, nine of the injured are medical workers.

The ministry said that the “terrorist strike by the Kiev regime” had “grossly violated international humanitarian law and basic human morality,” stressing that the facility “has never been used for military purposes” and was a purely civilian medical institution.

In another Ukrainian strike on the DPR this week, four civilians, including a six-year-old boy, were killed and twelve more injured. In Russia’s Zaporozhye Region a Ukrainian drone attacked a passenger bus carrying children from a sports school after it stopped at a gas station, injuring several boys and their coach, according to local authorities.

Moscow has repeatedly said that Kiev is attacking civilians because it cannot halt Russian advances on the battlefield.

Ukrainian officials claim that inflicting sufficient economic damage will force Russia to abandon its objectives in the four-year Ukraine conflict.

In response to the attacks against Russian civilians, Moscow has targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure that it says supports kamikaze drone production for long-range strikes.

A Ukrainian attempt to assassinate a senior Russian military official has been thwarted in the Crimean Peninsula, the Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Thursday.

The primary suspect in the alleged plot is a 39-year-old resident of Sevastopol, the port city hosting Russia’s Black Sea Fleet, who volunteered his services to a “terrorist organization acting under Ukrainian special services’ control,” the FSB said.

Several militia groups and military units fighting for Kiev fit the description, including the Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) led by neo-Nazi Denis ‘White Rex’ Kapustin. The FSB did not specify which group the suspect was affiliated with.

According to the agency, before being tasked with the murder, the man collected intelligence for Ukrainian civilian and military intelligence services.

The bomb plot was reportedly stopped after Ukrainian handlers provided information about the target and the location of a stash containing components for a remotely triggered improvised explosive device, which the agent was supposed to place under the military official’s car.

‘Happy shooting!’ AI chatbots eager to help plan mass violence – report

Eight in ten AI assistants provided guidance on targets and weapons to researchers posing as teens plotting attacks

Eight out of ten leading AI chatbots willingly assisted users in planning violent attacks, including school shootings, religious bombings, and assassinations, according to a joint investigation by CNN and the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH).

Researchers posing as troubled teenagers tested ten popular chatbots, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Meta AI, and DeepSeek. In hundreds of exchanges, the AI assistants provided detailed guidance on target locations, weapons procurement, and attack methodologies.

One exchange with DeepSeek reportedly ended with the chatbot wishing a would-be attacker “Happy (and safe) shooting!” Character.AI, which is popular among younger users, actively encouraged violence, telling a user expressing hatred for a health insurance CEO to “use a gun.”

When asked about effective shrapnel for explosives, ChatGPT provided detailed comparisons of materials, offering to create “a quick comparison chart showing the typical injuries.” Google’s Gemini supplied similar information, including a detailed comparison table.

Only Anthropic’s Claude and Snapchat’s My AI consistently refused to assist, with Claude actively discouraging users and providing mental health resources.

No imminent drone threat to California, says governor

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said there was no imminent threat to the state, despite a warning from the FBI that Iran could send drones to the West Coast in retaliation for war.

Newsom said drone issues “have always been top of mind.” “We’ve been aware of that information. … It’s all about a posture of preparedness for worst-case scenarios,” the governor said Wednesday.

The FBI recently warned police departments about Iran and a possible California strike, though the alert also said it was “unverified information.”

“Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United States homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event the U.S. conducted strikes against Iran,” the alert said.

“We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack,” the alert said.

The alert was posted on X by an FBI spokesperson after a report by ABC News.

Separately, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X that the message to law enforcement was a tip based on “unverified intelligence.”

“No such threat from Iran to our homeland exists, and it never did,” Leavitt said Thursday.

President Donald Trump was asked about it Wednesday at Joint Base Andrews.

“It’s being investigated, but you have a lot of things happening. All we can do is take ’em as they come,” Trump said.

Police in Los Angeles and San Francisco said they were monitoring world events for any risks to their cities. Both said they’re working closely with state and federal authorities.

Suspect in attack at Michigan synagogue is dead, ATF official says

The special agent in charge of the Detroit field office of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, James Deir, says the suspect in today's active shooting at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Mich, is dead.

Speaking to WXYZ-TV, Deir said authorities who responded to the scene have been told the suspect has died.

Scores of law enforcment officers and emergency personnel responded following reports of an active shooter this afternoon at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said during a brief news conference that synagogue security officers had "engaged the threat" that apparently started with a vehicle ramming into the building. Shots were fired, and a fire continues to burn in the large complex. Images from a TV helicopter showed thick, black smoke billowing in several places from the building.

Bouchard said no one is "confirmed hurt, except potentially the shooter." He could not say whether there are any links to terrorism. Since the U.S. and Israel-led war in Iran began, there's been heightened concern about retaliation. Bouchard asked residents within one mile of Temple Israel to shelter in place.

This synagogue, like nearly all Jewish places of worship in the U.S., has its own security officers. It also operates a school, and parents were rushing to a nearby reunification center.

Victims of NIH Mercury Study Blew Whistle on Rampant Sex Abuse in Orphanage; The Deeply Flawed NIH Study Continued

A controversial NIH funded study many dentists in the medical establishment cite as evidence that mercury causes no harm was pushed forward despite credible evidence of an industrial scale child sex abuse scandal targeting a vulnerable population of Portuguese orphans.

According to a National File investigation and NIH documents released after a FOIA request, many of those orphans have suffered devastating effects of prolonged exposure to mercury during the study, which came to be known as the Casa Pia study, in addition to the abuse which was widely reported on by the mainstream media.

The NIH’s only response was to fire off several rounds of emails a year after the scandal first surfaced in an effort to make it appear that they had done all appropriate due diligence with respect to the scandal.

The investigation into sex abuse at Casa Pia began in 2002, and was widely covered by international media, including The New York Times, Reuters, The Guardian, CBS, and the BBC, which primarily waited to report on the scandal until after convictions were handed down.

Top Portuguese luminaries were found guilty of involvement with a Child Sourcing and paedophile prostitution ring that exploited children from state-run orphanages, including one of Portugal's most famous television presenters and a former ambassador, along with six others.

The controversial mercury study continued apace until its completion in 2008, despite the scandal having been widely reported on beginning in 2002.

The abuse whistleblower, who was about ten years old at the time of the abuse, blew the whistle in 2002.

The NIH-funded study’s top authors and researchers participated in sweeping the known sex abuse scandal under the rug so that the study could continue, hiding it from government watchdogs for approximately one year.

National File is not identifying the victim, who is now in his mid-thirties, in order to protect his safety.

According to the BBC, child psychologists found that more than 100 children were likely to have been abused at some time during the so-called Casa Pia study.

Unfortunately, police were only able to push the matter forward in only a minority of abuse cases, though a half dozen abusers were ultimately convicted.

Casa Pia, through various schools and homes, cares for some 1,800 orphans and children whose families are not able to provide care for them.

Pedro Namora, a lawyer and former pupil who helped journalist Felicia Cabrita break the story in 2002, remembers his teachers' dedication with fondness.

Namora also condemned the directors' failure to safeguard the well-being of other children at the time.

"These were kids from deprived backgrounds, seen as rubbish," Namora said. "Incidents were reported, but officials washed their hands of it."

The White House on Wednesday demanded that ABC News retract a report claiming the FBI had warned California law enforcement about a potential Iranian drone attack on the West Coast, calling the story alarmist and based on a single, unverified intelligence tip.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a post on X that the report was built on "one email that was sent to local law enforcement in California about a single, unverified tip," and accused the network of deliberately omitting the fact that the underlying intelligence had not been corroborated.

"No such threat from Iran to our homeland exists, and it never did," Leavitt wrote.

The sharp rebuke came as the United States and Israel entered a 12th day of military operations against Iran, a conflict that has killed more than 1,200 people in Iran and prompted retaliatory strikes across the Middle East.

ABC report cited FBI bulletin distributed in late February

ABC News reported earlier Wednesday that the FBI had alerted police departments across California in recent days that Iran could retaliate against American strikes by launching drones at the West Coast from an unidentified vessel.

The network said it had reviewed the bulletin, which was distributed to local law enforcement at the end of February, before U.S. and Israeli forces launched their opening strikes on Iran on Feb. 28.

The alert stated that as of early February 2026, Iran had allegedly aspired to carry out a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles launched from a vessel off the California coast.

The bulletin also noted, however, that the FBI possessed no additional details regarding timing, method, specific targets, or the perpetrators behind the alleged plot.

Leavitt seized on that caveat, arguing that the network had buried the unverified nature of the intelligence to generate alarm. "They wrote this based on one email," she said. "Yet ABC News left out this critical fact in their story."

A spokeswoman for the FBI's Los Angeles office declined to comment on the bulletin. The White House did not respond to ABC's initial request for comment before the story was published.

Senior law enforcement official says Iran's capabilities degraded

A senior law enforcement official cited in the ABC report said it was believed that 12 days of sustained U.S. and Israeli bombardment had severely degraded Iran's ability to carry out any such operation against the American homeland.

The intelligence about Iran's aspirations predated the start of the military campaign.

The broader conflict, which Washington has codenamed Operation Epic Fury, began on Feb. 28 when U.S. and Israeli forces launched nearly 900 strikes in the first 12 hours, targeting Iranian missile systems, air defenses, military infrastructure, and senior leadership.

The opening salvo killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and dozens of other officials. Iran has since retaliated with waves of missiles and drones aimed at Israel and U.S. military installations across the Gulf region.

California officials say they are on heightened alert

State and local authorities in California said they were taking precautions. California Gov. Gavin Newsom's office told ABC News that the Governor's Office of Emergency Services was "actively working with state, local and federal security officials to protect our communities."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said it was maintaining an elevated level of readiness in light of global events and had increased patrols around places of worship, cultural institutions, and other prominent locations.

The department said it had also reviewed its deployment plans and ensured additional resources were available.
