An NBC News analysis of 30 videos and satellite images shows Iranian drones are presenting a new type of struggle for the U.S. and its allies.

The buzz came before the explosion. An aerial vehicle dove from the cloudless skytoward its target at Camp Buehring, a U.S. military base in Kuwait. It struck near a running track with a fiery plume of black smoke.
“Oh s-t,” a man recording from the base said. “Oh my God. Oh, that was right here. They’re f-ing getting… They’re starting to dial into our building.”
The video ends as the smoke billows in the desert outpost.
The footage of this attack, posted online on March 1 but possibly filmed earlier,is one of over 30 open-source videos and satellite images verifiedby NBC News showingIranian drone strikes and interceptions by the U.S. and its allies across seven countries. Apparent targets include military bases, transportation hubs, energy infrastructure and diplomatic centers.In 21 of 26 videos, drones appear to reach their targets.
The videos, posted on various online platforms,reveal a pattern of inadequate protection for strategic locations targeted by the drones from the outset of the war. As the U.S. and Israel bombard Iran with the stated goal of crippling its nuclear, ballistic and drone capabilities, Iran retaliates by utilizing its arsenal of missiles and cheap exploding drones.
The drones are a novel challenge for the U.S., its allies and the countries caught in the crossfire. Adversaries will be watching America’s response closely.
The weapon’s versatility may allow Iran to prolong the war by straining enemy resources, a tactic attractive for cash-strapped states, experts say. Iran is a pioneer of the technology, which it sold to Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It has challenged the economics of warfare. While the U.S. remains firm in its air dominance, Iran’s drone campaign has forced the targeted countries to use expensive munitions for interceptions.
“It’s kind of like the ultimate symbol of asymmetric warfare,” said Joe Dyke, director of programmes for Airwars, a nonprofit that tracks civilian harm in conflict zones.
While the drones can be shot down with a range of weapons including heavy machine guns, fighter jets and advanced interceptors, they can overwhelm air defenses and even one such aircraft can inflict deadly damage.
A drone strike killed six U.S. servicemembers at the civilian Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait. Video verified by NBC News shows that others have bombarded oil infrastructure and logistics hubs. Some drones have struck U.S. consulates and embassies across the Gulf states as passersby gasped and filmed the nosedives. An oil storage facility in Oman was hit twice: Once last week and again this week, underscoring the ongoing vulnerability of crucial targets.
The U.S. does not release data on the munitions it intercepts or faces. Data from the United Arab Emirates, which has been heavily impacted by Iranian strikes, says that 1,475 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) were fired at the country as of March 10 and 1,385 were intercepted.

The Iran war appears to be entering a new phase as attacks increasingly target checkpoints and street-level security units, while witness reports sent to Iran International suggest many of those positions are being moved or dismantled after their locations are exposed.
For days the conflict had focused largely on military bases, missile sites and command facilities, particularly in southern Iran,as part of the wider US-Israeli campaign that has struck thousands of targets across the countrysince the war began on February 28.
But since Wednesday evening, reporteddrone strikes on checkpoints in Tehran have pointed to a parallel line of pressure: the local security posts, patrol units and temporary deployments used to enforce control on the streets.
Iranian state-linked media said several checkpoints in Tehran were hit, killing members of the security forces and Basij militia. The reported locations included positions in multiple districts across the capital.
The development suggests the conflict is increasingly intersecting with the structures the state relies on to control neighborhoods rather than only its larger military infrastructure.
From fixed bases to moving checkpoints
Since the start of the war, residents across Iran say checkpoints and patrols havemultiplied in major cities as authorities attempt to prevent unrest and maintain control.
At the same time, Iran International has received a steady stream of messages from viewersdescribing the locations of checkpoints, security deployments and temporary bases.
Some reports describe armed units inspecting vehicles at major highway entrances or intersections. Others mentionsecurity forces using schools, sports halls and religious institutions as temporary accommodation or staging points.
Messages received in recent days pointed to deployments in locations ranging from major Tehran highways to entrances to cities such as Karaj, Shiraz, Mashhad and Qazvin. Residents alsodescribed units stationed beneath highway bridges, near parks or inside parking areas where buses and motorcycleswere parked overnight.
In several cases, viewers reported that checkpoints they had previously seen disappeared within hours or days, while others appeared to move to nearby streets or disperse into smaller patrol groups.
==Some messages described security forces sleeping inside buses or personal vehicles•• and conducting mobile patrols rather than remaining in fixed positions.
Others said checkpoints that had been inspecting vehicles were suddenly dismantled, leaving only a few officers nearby.
Such reports cannot be independently verified in each case. But taken together they suggest that many deployments are becoming more fluid, with positions shifting frequentlyrather than remaining in one place.
A war over control of the neighborhood
The shift reflects a deeper pressure on the state’s local enforcement network.
For years the Islamic Republic has relied on a dense web of Basij, police and Revolutionary Guards positions to control neighborhoods and quickly suppress unrest.
During the recent nationwide protests earlier this year, these same networks formed the backbone of the crackdown that sealed off districts and quashed the demonstrations.
In wartime, those local security units appear to be playing an even more central role.
As larger bases and installations come under pressure from airstrikes, authorities appear to be relying moreheavily on mobile checkpoints and temporary deployments to maintain control on the ground.
Now those fallback positions are also being drawn into the conflict.
The result is a battlefield that increasingly overlaps with everyday urban space. Instead of remaining confined to distant military facilities, the war is beginning to touch the street corners, highway entrances and neighborhood patrol routes where the state exerts day-to-day authority.

(March 13, 2026) – The U.S. Army awarded Anduril a new enterprise contract to consolidate the procurement and management of the company’s commercially available technologies. This strategic move will streamline operations, reduce administrative costs, and accelerate the fielding of critical capabilities to Warfighters and other stakeholders across the U.S. Government.
Previously, the Department of War managed more than 120 separate procurement actions for Anduril’s commercial solutions. The new enterprise contract consolidates contracts and agreements into a single contractual framework, eliminating pass-through charges on subcontracts. This streamlined approach reduces procurement timelines, ensuring Soldiers have rapid access to cutting-edge software platforms, integrated hardware, data and compute infrastructure, and a full range of ancillary support services.
It also provides detailed strategic, operational, and tactical capabilities to the Army through existing data integration with hundreds of Joint and Army systems.
“This enterprise contract is a critical step in establishing a common framework for counter-UAS interoperability,” said Brig. Gen. The 10-year contract includes a five-year base period and five-year optional ordering period which allows the Army to extend the contract beyond the base period. The contract has a total estimated value of up to $20 billion. This amount represents the maximum potential value, not an obligated amount.
This approach provides significant savings through range pricing and discounts as well as additional annual spend volume discounts from every order placed. The contract also establishes pre-negotiated terms and pricing, which saves both the government and contractor teams weeks of negotiations.
"The modern battlefield is increasingly defined by software. To maintain our advantage, we must be able to acquire and deploy software capabilities with speed and efficiency," said Gabe Chiulli, chief technology officer for the Office of the Chief Information Officer. McCord also served on the Columbus Police After Action Review Team tasked with evaluating how the Columbus, Ohio, Police Department responded to the 2020 summer protests.

Iran said Saturday that all countries besides the US and Israel may pass through the Strait of Hormuz, in a desperate attempt at coalition busting less than a day after the US bombed military targets on its oil-critical Kharg Island.
“As a matter of fact, the Strait of Hormuz is open,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.
“It is only closed to the tankers and ships belong[ing] to our enemies, to those who are attacking us and their allies. Others are free to pass,” Araghchi told MS NOW.
President Trump has threatened to destroy Iran’s oil infrastructure on Kharg Island energy hub — through which 90% of its oil exports pass — if it refuses to allow safe passage.
Araghchi noted that many ships “prefer” not to undertake the journey due to “security concerns,” but insisted, “this has nothing to do with us.”
“And I can say that the Strait is not closed, but it is only closed to American, Israeli, you know, ships and tankers, and not to others.”
Two Indian-flagged tankers carrying liquefied petroleum gas crossed the Strait, Reuters reported Saturday.
“They crossed the Strait of Hormuz safely early this morning and are en route to India,” Rajesh Kumar Sinha, the minister of ports and shipping in New Delhi, said.
Sixteen ships operating in and around the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz have been attacked since the war started Feb. 28 , according to UK Maritime Trade Operations.

Officials for Sable Offshore Corp. informed local fire officials of their intent to “resume pumping operations within 24 hours.”

The recruitment campaign comes after Fox News Digital reported that the organization’s CEO, former top Obama aide Valerie Jarrett, was paid $740,000 in 2024.
Foundation officials told Fox News Digital the volunteers will complement about 300 full- and part-time employees at the long-delayed center, which the organization is promoting as a $3.1 billion economic catalyst for the Windy City’s South Side.
The new program will have 75 to 100 volunteers, known as “ambassadors,” greet and direct visitors around the campus and share information about exhibits at the 22-story museum tower, athletic center and Chicago Public Library branch, among other amenities.
