Early results of an unprecedented vote in Taiwan aimed at ousting politicians accused of being too close to China indicate that all have retained their seats.

Thousands of Taiwanese went to the polls on Saturday in what has been termed as the "dabamian", or Great Recall vote, initiated by a civic movement.

The vote result was closely watched as it could have altered the balance of power in Taiwan, which has seen months of political deadlock between the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government and the legislature dominated by the opposition Kuomintang and its allies.

But the early result shows the opposition keeps its majority. A small number of votes are still being counted.

On Saturday, citizens in 24 districts – all held by the Kuomintang - voted on a simple yes or no question: whether they agreed to boot out their legislator.

While Taiwan held recall votes in the past, it had never seen so many within such a short period of time.

Early results show that a majority of voters in every district voted no, which means none of the lawmakers have to vacate their seats.

The opposition maintains its slim majority - for now. Another round of recall voting will be held in August for seven other seats.

Analysts have said that if the Great Recall fails, it would intensify political polarisation in Taiwan, and embolden politicians to do what they want despite opposition from a significant segment of the population.

The Great Recall has deeply divided Taiwanese society, which has seen large rallies and fierce debate. Both pro-recall and anti-recall activists claimed to be fighting for Taiwan's democracy.

Catholics take part in a demonstration to call for the President of the Democratic Republic.

The death toll has risen to at least 34 people in a savage attack by Islamic State-backed rebels on a Catholic church in the eastern Congo on Sunday, according to a local leader.

Dieudonne Duranthabo, a civil society coordinator in Komanda, in the Ituri province, told The Associated Press (AP) that the attackers, armed with guns and machetes, stormed the church in Komanda town at around 1 a.m.

The rampage also extended to several houses and shops that were torched.

“The bodies of the victims are still at the scene of the tragedy, and volunteers are preparing how to bury them in a mass grave that we are preparing in a compound of the Catholic church,” Duranthabo told AP.

Video footage from the scene posted on Aljazeera shows burning structures and bodies on the floor of the church.

Reportedly at least five other people were murdered in an earlier attack on the nearby village of Machongani.

The Allied Democratic Force (ADF) is believed to be the perpetrators of both attacks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The ADF is a rebel group that historically has operated along the border between Uganda and Congo. It was formed in Uganda in the late 1990s following alleged discontent with President Yoweri Museveni.

According to CNN:

In 2002, following military assaults by Ugandan forces, the group moved its activities to neighboring DRC and has since been responsible for the killings of thousands of civilians. In 2019, it pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. The ADF’s leadership conceives of an Islamist government in the East African country.

As Breitbart News reported, Congo recently made news in the White House when President Donald Trump hosted Foreign Ministers of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo to sign a historic peace agreement, ending years of conflict between those two countries.

Apparently, Congo security forces were in the area at the time of the Ituri province attack on Sunday.

“We are truly disappointed because it is incredible that such a situation could occur in a town where all the security officials are present,” Duranthabo said.“Some citizens have started fleeing the area and are heading towards Bunia.”

Bunia is the capital city of the Ituri province about 45 miles from the Ugandan border.

Trump announces EU trade deal with 15% tariffs

-President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the U.S. has reached a trade deal with the European Union.

-Trump said that the deal imposes a 15% tariff on most European goods to the U.S., including cars.

-The EU also agreed to purchase $750 billion worth of U.S. energy and invest an additional $600 billion worth of investments into the U.S. above current levels.

President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the U.S. reached a trade deal with the European Union, following pivotal discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen days before the Aug. 1 tariff deadline.

Trump said that the deal imposes a 15% tariff on most European goods to the U.S., including cars.

Some products, including aircrafts and their components, some chemicals and pharmaceuticals, will not be subject to tariffs, von der Leyen said in a briefing after the agreement was announced. She also said that the new 15% tariff rate would not be added to any tariffs already in effect.

The 15% tariff rate is lower than the 30% rate Trump had previously threatened against the United States’ largest trading partner, but higher than the 10% baseline tariffs the EU was hoping for.

Trump said that the 27-member bloc also agreed to purchase $750 billion worth of U.S. energy and invest an additional $600 billion worth of investments into the U.S. above current levels.

He said that the bloc would also be “purchasing hundreds of billions of dollars worth of military equipment,” but did not provide a specific dollar amount.

“It’s a very powerful deal, it’s a very big deal, it’s the biggest of all the deals,” Trump said Sunday alongside von der Leyen.

“It’s a good deal, it’s a huge deal, with tough negotiations,” von der Leyen said after the meeting.

While questions remain about the specific details and timeline of the EU investments, the agreement marks a pivotal moment for Trump, following weeks of uncertainty surrounding the U.S.-EU trade talks.

Trump during a press conference before his meeting with the European leader said that there was a 50-50 chance they would reach a framework of a deal.

Brussels had been preparing for a no-deal scenario if the trade talks devolved ahead of Aug. 1.

Lawmakers had approved a major package of counter-tariffs, which would have targeted a range of U.S. goods. The bloc also considered deploying the EU’s “Anti-Coercion Instrument,” a move seen as the trading bloc’s “trade bazooka.”

European leaders react

European leaders were quick to applaud the agreement amid relief that the bloc had seemingly avoided a trade war, but some voiced caution about the terms of the deal.

Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin said the agreement “brings clarity and predictability to the trading relationship between the EU and the US,” according to a statement.

“It does mean that there will now be higher tariffs than there have been and this will have an impact on trade between the EU and the US, making it more expensive and more challenging,” Ireland’s Department of the Taoiseach said.

Still, the agreement “creates a new era of stability,” the statement continued.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz welcomed the new accord, citing the benefits it would bring to the country’s auto industry.

“With the agreement in the EU-US negotiations on tariffs a trade conflict, which would have hit the export-oriented German economy hard, has been avoided,” he said in a statement.

“This is especially true for the auto industry, for which the current tariffs of 27.5% were almost halved to 15%. Especially here the quick tariff reduction is of great significance,” he added.

Netherlands Prime Minister Dick Schoof said, in a post on X Sunday, that “no tariffs would have been better,” but praised the European Commission for securing the best agreement possible.

He said the deal underway “provides more clarity for our businesses and brings more market stability.”

Italy’s government leaders, including Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, issued a statement saying the deal helps avoid a “direct clash between the two sides of the Atlantic,” and “guarantees stability” between the U.S. and European Union.

The statement also said Italy considered tariffs at 15% to be “sustainable,” if that percentage includes, and is not in addition to, previous tariffs.

The U.S.-EU trade relationship was valued at 1.68 trillion euros ($1.97 trillion) when taking into account both services and goods trading in 2024, according to the European Council.

While the EU recorded a surplus on goods trading, it noted a deficit in the services realm. This left the EU with an overall trade surplus of around 50 billion euros with the U.S. last year.

WASHINGTON — Disgraced former Rep. George Santos reported to prison on Friday, beginning a more than seven-year sentence after pleading guilty to a laundry list of federal charges that included wire fraud, identity theft and money laundering.

He is in custody at the Federal Correctional Institution Fairton in Fairton, New Jersey, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed Friday.

The flashy New York Republican, who stormed onto the national stage when he unexpectedly won a congressional seat in 2022 and was expelled by his colleagues the very next year, didn’t go quietly this week. He appeared on an hourlong podcast, engaged with his followers on X Spaces and posted a series of farewell tweets on X. He also continued to post videos for supporters on the Cameo platform through Friday morning, charging a minimum of $300 per video, according to the site.

“Well, darlings… The curtain falls, the spotlight dims, and the rhinestones are packed. From the halls of Congress to the chaos of cable news what a ride it’s been! Was it messy? Always. Glamorous? Occasionally. Honest? I tried… most days,” Santos wrote on X.

“I may be leaving the stage (for now), but trust me legends never truly exit,” he continued.

In his hour-and-a-half Spaces live broadcast, Santos, a Donald Trump ally in Congress, said he had been asked by many people whether he would get a presidential pardon or commutation that could cut short his 87-month sentence.

“The answer to that is, I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong person,” he said on Thursday. “The only person that can answer that question is, you know, whoever the president of the United States is — in this case, President Donald Trump.”

The White House has not commented on the matter.

Santos’ political career was one of the shortest and most tumultuous in recent memory. Even before he was sworn in to office, The New York Times and other outlets revealed that he had fabricated parts of his resume, and the personal narrative that he shared with donors and voters on the campaign trail began to fall apart.

The House Ethics Committee issued a scathing investigative report about Santos, finding he’d likely committed multiple federal crimes, and the Justice Department indicted him on 23 counts, including embezzling contributions from supporters, illegally obtaining unemployment benefits and lying on House financial disclosures.

In the 2022 midterm elections, Santos had been one of four Republicans who had flipped Democratic-held seats in New York. But after the indictment and Ethics report, it was those same New York GOP colleagues who led the charge to oust him from Congress.

On Dec. 1, 2023, the House voted 311-114 to expel Santos, making him just the sixth person in U.S. history to be expelled from the House of Representatives.

After his guilty plea, Santos was sentenced to 87 months behind bars this past April and ordered to pay almost $374,000 in restitution and over $200,000 in forfeiture.

During his appearances this week, Santos repeatedly expressed remorse for his lies and actions, even as he tried to settle political scores with those who ousted him from Congress.

“I think we can all attest that I’ve made a string of s— choices in my life, and for that, I’m sorry to those I’ve disappointed, to those I’ve let down, to those that I have caused irreparable damage. I’m sorry. I mean it. I’m not — I’m not placating. This isn’t for show,” Santos said on Spaces.

“It’s just, life sucks sometimes and life-ing is hard,” he said.

In a stunning scientific discovery, researchers have found that a pair of drugs can not only slow down Alzheimer’s disease but actually reverse it and restore memory in mice.

And the best part of all? Both are already FDA-approved — albeit for cancer.

Researchers first pinpointed how Alzheimer’s disease scrambles gene activity in individual brain cells.

Using the Connectivity Map database of 1,300 FDA‑approved drugs, the researchers looked for medications that reverse Alzheimer’s‑associated gene expression — landing on a shortlist of five, and zeroing in on two cancer drugs.

In what one researcher called a “mock clinical trial,” they then mined 1.4 million patients’ medical records, finding that those who had taken letrozole or irinotecan for cancer were significantly less likely to develop Alzheimer’s

When given together in an aggressive Alzheimer’s mouse model, letrozole — used to treat certain types of breast cancer in postmenopausal women — and irinotecan — an anti-cancer medication used to treat colon cancer and small cell lung cancer — reversed disease‑related gene expression signatures, dissolved toxic tau protein clumps and prevented brain degeneration.

Most importantly, they restored memory and learning in mice that had already developed severe symptoms.

It’s an exciting development for an illness that’s notoriously tricky.

A church in Montreal has been fined $2,500 for hosting a worship service featuring U.S. Christian musician Sean Feucht without obtaining the necessary permit from the city—despite the service being violently disrupted by Antifa protesters.

Feucht, a prominent Christian artist from California, performed at the Ministerios Restauracion Church on Friday night. The service was held despite warnings from Montreal authorities, who had earlier indicated that the event would require an official permit.

City officials had voiced strong opposition to the event. A spokesperson for Mayor Valerie Plante stated, “This show runs counter to the values of inclusion, solidarity, and respect that are championed in Montreal,” emphasising that the city would not tolerate speech it deemed discriminatory or hateful.

“Freedom of expression is one of our fundamental values, but hateful and discriminatory speech is not acceptable in Montreal,” the spokesperson added.

In response to the worship service, the City of Montreal issued a fine to the church for operating without the necessary state-issued permit, citing violations of city regulations.

The service was disrupted when a protester threw a smoke bomb onto the stage. Feucht, who was on-site during the incident, later accused local police of failing to intervene.

In a post on social media platform X, Feucht voiced his frustration: “Let me get this right Montreal: 1) You canceled our permit for a peaceful outdoor worship gathering for no reason; 2) You threaten a CHURCH on private property to not have church. 3) You send a battalion of police to intimidate us. 4) Antifa throws 2 smoke bombs at my head inside the church – you do nothing! 5) Now you want to fine the church for doing what the church does – WORSHIP.”

Operation Grayskull just quietly became one of the most successful child predator takedowns in U.S. history.

Four of the most disturbing child abuse websites on the dark web were completely dismantled. Eighteen offenders were convicted in the U.S. alone. Over 300 years in federal prison have been handed out so far. And the networks haven’t resurfaced.

This didn’t happen under Biden. It started during Trump’s first term. And it’s wrapping up now, under Trump’s second, with Kash Patel at the head of the FBI.

Back in 2020, during Trump’s final year in office, the infrastructure for this operation was put in motion. Project Safe Childhood was prioritized. Interagency coordination was greenlit. The rules of engagement were rewritten to make international takedowns like this possible.

Britain's most famous detective: Who is Colin Sutton?

Colin Sutton might be known by his peers for being a Detective Chief Inspector for the Metropolitan Police, but it was solving two high-profile cases that brought the former SIO the recognition he deserves. Sutton, aka ‘The Real Manhunter’ relentlessly and determinedly pursued serial killer Levi Bellfield as well as rapist Delroy Grant, bringing both criminals to justice.

Colin Sutton led more than 30 successful murder investigations over the years and solved some of the most notorious cases. In this article, we will explore some of Sutton’s most famous convictions.

Levi Bellfield

Infamous serial killer Levi Bellfield first came to prominence when Colin Sutton was assigned the Amélie Delagrange case. The French student was visiting the UK in August 2004 and was later found bludgeoned to death with a hammer after a night out with friends in London.

Connecting this case with a murder investigation 18 months prior, Sutton believed this was not the perpetrator’s first offence. A young girl, Marsha McDonnell, had also been hit over the head near her Hampton home and died from her injuries. Bellfield was later found guilty of killing and abducting 13-year-old Milly Dowler, who he murdered in 2002.

The detective had very little scientific evidence to convict Bellfield but analysed CCTV images and phone records to help build his case. It took Sutton nearly three years to garner enough compelling evidence to bring Bellfield to justice.

The former bouncer is now serving a life sentence in Wakefield prison after being convicted of two murders and one attempted murder in 2008, before being later found guilty and given another life sentence for the killing of Millie Dowler.

Delroy Grant

As well as convicting one of the most notorious serial killers in the country, Colin Sutton also managed to catch serial rapist Delroy Grant in 2011, after at least a decade of crime. Between 1992 and 2009, Grant – aka 'The Night Stalker’ – was robbing homes in London and sexually assaulting elderly women while they slept. When Sutton took over the case, he tied him to at least 203 criminal offences.

But how did Colin Sutton build his case against Grant? Having gained extensive experience developing compelling intel with limited scientific evidence, the former detective implemented his criminal know-how from the Bellfield case.

He began closing in on Grant by focusing his attention on technical surveillance. Using 75 officers from the Met, Sutton managed to hone in on the suspect when he committed a burglary 17 days into the operation. He was able to catch the suspect using neighbourhood surveillance. He later told sources that he thought this strategy was more proactive than conducting mass swabbing and DNA at the beginning of the investigation.

It was Sutton’s quick-thinking and strategic methodology that proved effective in all the cases he worked on as a Senior Investigating Officer.

Although Delroy Grant was connected to hundreds of crimes, Sutton believes there is more to the story than was discovered. However, the London-based serial rapist was sentenced to a minimum of 27 years in prison in 2011.

The real Manhunter

Coming face-to-face with some of the UK’s most horrifying criminals, Colin Sutton has had quite a career over his 30-year tenure. Even though he is now fully retired, the former detective continuously looks back on his time with the Met and sheds light on what happened and how he managed to capture Bellfield and Grant.

‘Most cases of murder and serious crime are spontaneous, so that a quick and large-scale response will often bring quick results. But men like Bellfield and Grant are more cunning, they plan their crimes and try their best to avoid leaving forensic evidence. These are the hardest cases to solve.’

Sutton now lives in Suffolk, providing commentary and intel around criminal justice issues, as well as using his degree in law to assist his investigative work around the commission of offences and the prison system.

Harmeet Dhillon, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice, posted on Sunday she and her department will be monitoring the investigation into a vicious attack on a white man and white woman by a mob of Black people in Cincinnati Friday night after video of the beatings went viral.

Dhillion commented on a post by Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio),“Our federal hate crimes laws apply to ALL Americans. We @CivilRights will monitor closely how local authorities handle this attack. Nobody in our great nation should be the victim of such a crime, and where race is a motivation, federal law may apply.”

Moreno had posted, “The Mayor of Cincinnati, @AftabPureval, who has an opinion on lots of irrelevant topics, has not issued a statement, let alone a condemnation, of this heinous attack. Instead of dreaming about higher office, which will never happen, he should be ensuring his residents are safe.”

Moreno’s post was in response to screen images from the video that showed a man on the ground being attacked by a mob and an unconscious woman with blood streaming from her mouth.

The original video was posted to X and Facebook on Saturday morning by Vice President J.D. Vance’s half-brother, Cincinnati mayoral candidate Cory Bowman. Bowman, a Republican, placed second in a May jungle primary and will face incumbent Democrat Mayor Aftab Pureval in November.

Brussels has agreed to sweeping trade tariffs on European exports to the US and other concessions to avoid even higher duties

The new trade agreement between the US and the EU is “completely humiliating for the Europeans,” former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said.

The deal, announced on Sunday by US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, includes a requirement for EU member states to increase imports of American energy and defense products. It also imposes a blanket 15% tariff on EU exports to the US – terms accepted by Brussels to avoid even steeper trade penalties.

In a social media post on Monday, Medvedev, who serves as deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, claimed that the terms of the deal meant Trump had “wiped the floor with Europe.”

“One can only feel sorry for ordinary Europeans,” Medvedev wrote. He asserted thatwhere Trump is seeking economic benefits for American businesses, EU leaders are motivated by an ideological anti-Russian sentiment, as the deal further cements Brussels’ intention to terminate all purchases of Russian oil and gas.

The Trump administration has used tariffs as a tool to confront what it considers unfair trade practices and chronic deficits in trade with key partners. In the absence of a deal, EU products could have faced tariffs as high as 50%. Last week, Brussels prepared a list of US goods it was ready to hit with retaliatory duties if negotiations collapsed.

Medvedev and other senior Russian officials have repeatedly portrayed EU leaders as politically weak and overly compliant with Washington’s agenda, often at the expense of their own economic interests.

Russia has been especially critical of the EU’s break from Russian energy supplies, a move initiated as part of sanctions over the Ukraine conflict. The timeline for Moscow and Kiev to settle the conflict has been reduced to “10 or 12 days” from now, the US president has said

US President Donald Trump has warned he will reduce the time frame he had set for Moscow and Kiev to settle the Ukraine conflict to just “10 or 12 days” from now. He had previously demanded the sides reach an agreement in 50 days, threatening to impose additional sanctions against Russia otherwise.

The set of punitive measures announced by Washington would involve secondary sanctions, including tariffs on countries and entities doing business with Russia. Trump’s initial deadline was due to expire in early September.

“I’m going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him [Putin] to a lesser number, because I think I already know the answer what’s going to happen,”Trump told journalists in Scotland ahead of a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. When further pressed on the new timeline, the president stated that it would be “10 or 12 days” from Monday.

The American leader claimed he had been close to reaching a ceasefire deal on Ukraine conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin five times. “I’ve spoken to President Putin a lot, I’ve gotten along with him very well,” he said, while accusing Moscow of launching strikes against Ukrainian cities and stating that he was “very disappointed” with the Russian leadership.

Moscow has stated throughout the conflict that it is open for dialogue and could start negotiations without preconditions, as long as the situation on the ground is taken into account and the root causes of the conflict are addressed during the talks.It also said Trump’s new sanctions threats serve primarily “as signals to continue war” for Ukraine and called on Washington to put pressure on Kiev instead.

Any new sanctions, including the secondary ones, would not affect Russia’s policy as Moscow would “continue to move along our independent, sovereign, and sustained path,”Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said in response to Trump’s previous threats.

The US president said earlier this week that he could potentially impose the announced sanctions before the previously declared deadline.

Moscow and Kiev renewed direct talks in Istanbul in May following an almost three-year pause. The latest round of negotiations took place last week. No ceasefire was reached, but the two sides made progress on humanitarian issues, including agreements on the exchange of prisoners of war and civilians.

Collision at Asteroid Dimorphos

Why was this collision so strange? In 2022, to develop Earth-saving technology, NASA deliberately crashed the DART spacecraft into the asteroid moonlet Dimorphos. The hope was that this collision would alter the trajectory of Dimorphos around its parent asteroid Didymos and so demonstrate that similar collisions could, in theory, save the Earth from being hit by (other) hazardous asteroids. But analyses of new results show that the effects of the collision are different than expected - and we are trying to understand why. Featured here is the time lapse video taken by the ejected LICIACube camera LUKE showing about 250 seconds of the expanding debris field of Dimorphos after the collision, with un-impacted Didymos passing in the foreground. In 2026, Europe's Hera mission will reach the asteroids and release three spacecraft to better study the matter.

The new EU-US trade agreement is an economic and political “fiasco” that undermines the bloc’s sovereignty, veteran right-wing French politician Marine Le Pen has said.

The agreement, finalized by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump on Sunday,averted a full-blown trade war between Washington and Brussels.Under its terms, the EU will commit to increased imports of US energy and military equipment, while the US reduces its proposed 30% tariffs to a flat 15% on most European exports.

Le Pen, a key member of France’s National Rally party, the largest opposition group in the National Assembly, condemned the deal,calling it “a political, economic and moral fiasco” for the EU.

”Politically, because the European Union, with 27 member states, obtained worse conditions than the United Kingdom,” she said, referring to the fact that the UK agreed to 10% tariffs – which was widely regarded as a bad deal.

She added thatthe deal sacrifices the interests of French farmers to benefit Germany’s automotive industry, pointing to “clauses forcing us to further open the single market to American agricultural products in exchange for reduced taxes on German automobile exports.”

“This globalization that denies and shatters sovereignty has been outdated for many years… The least that could be done is to acknowledge this stinging failure rather than asking the French, who will be its first victims, to rejoice in it.”

Le Pen’s criticism was echoed by former Belgian Prime Minister and MEP Guy Verhofstadt, who called the agreement “scandalous” and “a disaster,” which failed to secure any concessions from the American side.

Trump described the agreement as “probably the biggest deal ever reached in any capacity, trade or beyond trade.” Von der Leyen said the deal brings “certainty in uncertain times,” adding that a 15% rate “is the best we could get.”

NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 Rocket Arrives at Launch Pad

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, with the Dragon crew spacecraft atop, for NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 mission rolled out to the launch pad early Sunday, July 27, at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The rocket was raised to vertical position at Kennedy’s Launch Complex 39A, awaiting lift off no earlier than 12:09 p.m. EDT on Thursday, July 31.

The Crew-11 mission will carry NASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Kimiya Yui, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Platonov to the International Space Station for a long-duration mission.

Crew-11 will conduct new and exciting scientific research aboard the orbiting laboratory to prepare for human exploration beyond low Earth orbit and benefit life on Earth.

This is first spaceflight for Cardman and Platonov, the second for Yui, and the fourth for Fincke.

The flight is the 11th crew rotation mission with SpaceX to station, and the 12th human spaceflight under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.

The Crew-11 cadre will fly aboard the SpaceX Dragon crew spacecraft that previously flew NASA’s SpaceX Demo Mission-2, Crew-2, Crew-6, and Crew-8, in addition to Axiom Mission 1, the first private astronaut mission to the microgravity laboratory.

Russia is fighting the West alone for the first time in history and must rely solely on its own strength, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

Speaking at the ‘Territory of Meanings’ forum on Monday, Lavrov highlighted the unprecedented geopolitical landscape Russia found itself in following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022, which led to a heated stand-off with the West.

”The main task is to defeat the enemy. For the first time in history, Russia is fighting alone against the entire West. In World War I and World War II, we had allies. Now we have no allies on the battlefield. So we must rely on ourselves and not allow any weakness,” he said.

Lavrov stressed that Russia will not back down from its core security demands which led to the Ukraine conflict.“We insist on what is our legitimate demand… no dragging Ukraine into NATO, no NATO expansion at all.It has already expanded right up to our borders, contrary to all promises and documents that were adopted,” he said, adding that a settlement of the conflict should also recognize the new territorial reality on the ground.

Lavrov also likened the West’s behavior to that of childhood bullies. “When you’re a kid messing around with other boys in the yard, sometimes a big kid, three or four years older, shows up and starts chasing the little ones,” he said. “That’s roughly what the West is doing to everyone else right now.”

Moscow has stated on a number of occasions that NATO expansion and Ukraine’s aspirations to join the US-led military bloc were among the key reasons for the conflict. It has also warned that Western weapons deliveries to Ukraine only serve to prolong the hostilities without changing the outcome, while making NATO a direct party to the conflict.

The world needs an “International Day against Russophobia,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said, adding that this “extremist” ideology should not be allowed to take root in the international community.

Anti-Russian propaganda spread by Western nations has already led to numerous tragedies, including the Ukraine conflict, the spokeswoman told an International Summer School for young public officials. “Weapons are being supplied to the terrorist Kiev regime under the hellish banners of Russophobia,” she said.

According to Zakharova,the hatred of everything Russian has become “yet another extremist, Nazi… neo-Nazi ideology that kills people both literally and figuratively.” It should be combated just like any other racial or religious hatred, the spokeswoman maintained.

The Baltic states have also ramped up enforcement actions against anyone suspected of having Russian ties. Hundreds of people, primarily ethnic Russians, have reportedly been deported from Latvia for failing a Latvian language exam. Riga has also prohibited entry of Russian citizens who own real estate near strategically important sites, citing security concerns.

In June, top officials from Baltic and Nordic nations called on Brussels to ban all Russians with past or current ties to the military from entering the Schengen Zone.

NASA Captures Haunting Photos of Lightning Illuminating a Tropical Storm

Floating 258 miles above, NASA astronauts on board the International Space Station have a view like no other and can therefore photograph Earth in unique ways.

Recently, the NASA Johnson Flickr page uploaded a dramatic set of photos showing the inside of a tropical cyclone. The picture was lit by thunder bolts.

Category 1 Hurricane Erick brought heavy rainfall to parts of southern and southwestern Mexico in June 2025.

It caused flash floods and mudslides that left at least 23 dead, 28 injured, and two missing. The total damage was estimated at $250 million, according to Wikipedia.

The awesome photos do not have an author ascribed to them, but we do know they were taken on June 20 at roughly 3.42 AM local time as Hurricane Erick stormed across the Pacific Ocean south of the Mexican state of Chiapas.

The photos were uploaded just a few days ago.

Astronauts onboard the ISS have become prolific photographers, and while the identity of the photograph’s author is unknown, we do know it was shot on a Nikon Z9 with a Nikon 200mm f/2 VR attached, set at 1/125 of a second, f/2.0, and 12,800 ISO.

The photos were likely taken by one of the Expedition 73 Crew, which includes NASA flight engineers Anne McClain, Nichole Ayers, and Jonny Kim.

Out of the three, Nichole “Vapor” Ayers has proven to be the most accomplished photographer, having captured a spectacular image of a sprite — a rare form of lightning that shoots up from a thunderstorm — earlier this month.

Don Pettit, who is arguably the best photographer to ever visit space, mentioned last year that he was on a mission to capture a photo of a sprite directly from above.

Along with fellow talented photographer and astronaut Matthew Dominick, the pair were shooting thousands of photos while flying over lightning storms in the hope that a sprite would shoot up toward them.

Sadly, it hasn’t been accomplished yet.

JPL Leads NASA’s Breakthrough in Autonomous Satellite Imaging

NASA has successfully tested an artificial intelligence system that allows satellites to autonomously decide when and where to capture images.

The technology, called Dynamic Targeting, was developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena and deployed aboard CogniSAT-6, a CubeSat built by Open Cosmos.

The July flight demonstrated the system’s ability to complete a full scan-decide-capture loop in just 60 to 90 seconds, even while traveling nearly 1,300 kilometers down-track at orbital speeds.

It works by tilting the satellite forward 40 to 50 degrees to scan for cloud cover before pitching back to take images only of clear scenes.

CogniSAT-6 uses a single optical sensor for both targeting and imaging, powered by an Intel Myriad X processor executing cloud detection algorithms in under five seconds.

The AI software was developed at JPL over a decade of research, with funding from NASA’s Earth Science Technology Office. NASA’s press release dated July 24 confirmed the successful test and outlined the system’s operational goals.

“The idea is to make the spacecraft act more like a human: Instead of just seeing data, it’s thinking about what the data shows and how to respond,” said Steve Chien, JPL technical fellow in AI, in the NASA announcement.

Open Cosmos provided spacecraft operations and mission services under a multi-year contract. Dublin-based Ubotica supplied the AI hardware, previously tested aboard the International Space Station in 2021.

“If you can be smart about what you’re taking pictures of, then you only image the ground and skip the clouds.

That way, you’re not storing, processing, and downloading all this imagery researchers really can’t use,” said Ben Smith, associate at the Earth Science Technology Office, during a media briefing.

NASA reports that up to 67 percent of Earth-observation scenes are obscured by cloud cover globally. The test demonstrated effective image filtering, with the system skipping clouded scenes entirely to conserve power and bandwidth.

Future upgrades will allow satellites to track wildfires, storms, and other transient phenomena, as well as coordinate across a fleet using inter-satellite communication under the Federated Autonomous MEasurement project.

JPL’s Pasadena-based team continues to advance autonomous space technologies, building on its prior work with missions like Earth-Observing-1 and Rosetta. Dynamic Targeting’s success marks a major step toward smarter, more agile scientific instruments.

The reverse design features an astronaut conducting a spacewalk outside the International Space Station, representing the culmination of the Mission Control Center’s economic, logistical, and intellectual support for NASA’s human space program and the support of astronauts from the many countries that participate in the program.

The obverse shares the same dramatic representation of the Statue of Liberty as the rest of the series. This latest edition to the series will be available in rolls and bags from the United States Mint starting on July 29, 2025.
