The Brief

Authorities are seeking an additional suspect, Benjamin Hanil Song, in connection with an "ambush" at the ICE detention facility in Alvarado on July 4.

Song, a 32-year-old Dallas resident and former U.S. Marine Corps Reservist, is accused of firing two AR-15-style rifles at three officers.

The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to Song's arrest.

International experts will join Irish counterparts to uncover an unmarked mass burial site for children at a former mother and baby home in Tuam in western Ireland, the director of the excavation team said on Monday.

Staff from Colombia, Spain, Britain, Canada and the United States have joined the Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention (ODAIT) team in Tuam, its director Daniel MacSweeney said at a press conference in the town.

The full-scale excavation of the site in Tuam - 135 miles west of Dublin - will start next week and is expected to last two years, said MacSweeney.

Democrats Move to Sanction El Salvador For ‘Gross Violations’ of Human Rights — President Bukele Laughs in Their Face

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is clearly not cowed by the Democratic Party blowhards in the Senate.

Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and Tim Kaine (D-VA) recently introduced legislation aimed at sanctioning Bukele and top officials in his government for “gross violations of internationally recognized human rights.”

The proposed bill targets alleged human rights abuses committed under El Salvador’s “state of exception,” a sweeping anti-gang crackdown launched in 2022 that included harsh security measures like the CECOT mega-prison.

It would sanction individuals believed to have participated in or supported these abuses, including those accused of using U.S. taxpayer funds to violate constitutional rights of U.S. residents.

Sanctions include U.S. visa bans, asset freezes, and restrictions on loans or financial support, with the Treasury directed to block any non-humanitarian funding to the Salvadoran government.

The legislation would also force Secretary of State Marco Rubio to file a report to Congress on the “actions of officials of the Government of El Salvador, including President Nayib Bukele, to use cryptocurrency as a mechanism for gross corruption, graft, and sanctions evasion.”

Bukele was clearly not initimdated by the bill, describing it as Democrats being salty.

Van Hollen introduced the bill shortly after visiting El Salvador to advocate for Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national accused of MS-13 affiliation and human smuggling, who had recently been deported.

Abrego Garcia has since returned to the U.S. to stand trial on human trafficking charges, to which he pleaded not guilty in mid-June.

Last week, President Bukele released a video aimed at disproving allegations made by Abrego Garcia that he was beaten and tortured while in Salvadoran custody.

North Carolina facing another flood threat just days after Chantal’s deadly flooding

RALEIGH, N.C. – Days after deadly flooding in North Carolina from Tropical Depression Chantal, the flooding threat has returned, with more heavy rain expected to fall over the Carolinas and up through the Interstate 95 Corridor.

Leftover moisture from Chantal brought nearly a foot of rain across parts of the mid-Atlantic toward the end of the July Fourth weekend and into this week, including in North Carolina.

At least four deaths have been caused by flooding in North Carolina this week.

One woman was killed in Orange County, North Carolina, on Monday when she was caught in the flooding while heading to work, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said two missing boaters on Jordan Lake were later found dead. Another 83-year-old flooding victim was killed when her vehicle was swept away by floodwaters on Sunday.

This multiday threat comes from extreme moisture fueling rounds of heavy rain beginning Wednesday afternoon with some potentially severe thunderstorms.

Flood Watches are in place through Wednesday night from central North Carolina through northern New Jersey.

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center is forecasting a Level 3 out of 4 risk for excessive rainfall for parts of North Carolina and Virginia and Maryland, including Richmond and the Washington, DC-Baltimore area. That zone expanded into the Delmarva Peninsula late Wednesday morning.

Stars are forming in Lynds Dark Nebula (LDN) 1251. About 1,000 light-years away and drifting above the plane of our Milky Way galaxy, LDN 1251 is also less appetizingly known as "The Rotten Fish Nebula." The dusty molecular cloud is part of a complex of dark nebulae mapped toward the Cepheus flare region. Across the spectrum, astronomical explorations of the obscuring interstellar clouds reveal energetic shocks and outflows associated with newborn stars, including the telltale reddish glow from scattered Herbig-Haro objects hiding in the image. Distant background galaxies also lurk in the scene, almost buried behind the dusty expanse. This alluring telescopic frame spans almost three full moons on the sky. That corresponds to over 25 light-years at the estimated distance of LDN 1251.

President Donald Trump on Monday named Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to also serve as interim NASA administrator.

Janet Petro, a former leader of the Kennedy Space Center, has been the agency's acting administrator since Trump became president on Jan. 20. The administrator reports directly to the president.

"Sean is doing a TREMENDOUS job in handling our Country's Transportation Affairs, including creating a state-of-the-art Air Traffic Control systems, while at the same time rebuilding our roads and bridges, making them efficient, and beautiful, again," the president wrote in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday.

"He will be a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency, even if only for a short period of time. Congratulations, and thank you, Sean."

Duffy, a lawyer and broadcaster who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2002 to 2010, has no science background.

"Honored to accept this mission," Duffy posted on X. "Time to take over space. Let's launch."

The president hasn't nominated anyone for the agency after he withdrew billionaire Jared Isaacman's name to lead NASA, citing a "thorough review of prior associations."

The nomination was withdrawn on May 31, before the Senate was expected to vote on the nomination of Isaacman, who has twice traveled to space on private missions.

It was withdrawn on the day SpaceX chief Elon Musk left the White House after leading the Department of Government Efficiency.

Trump, in a post on Truth Social on Sunday, said it was "inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon's corporate life."

In the message, Trump said he was "saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely 'off the rails,' essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks."

The proposed 2026 fiscal year budget for NASA is $18.8 billion, which is a 25% reduction on overall funding and the smallest since 1961 when Alan Shepard became the first American in space.

There are 17,000 permanent civil service employees with headquarters in Washington.

Major locations are the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, the Johnson Space Center in Texas, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, the Langley Research Center in Virginia, the Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama and the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.

NASA relies on SpaceX to send its astronauts to the International Space Center.

The agency also primarily uses private contractors and suppliers to build its rockets and related systems.

The Department of Transportation has 57,000 employees, including the Federal Aviation Administration, safety of commercial motor vehicles and truckers, public transportation, railroads and maritime transport and ports.

Several other political appointees are serving in multiple roles, according to NBC News.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio currently serves as the interim national security adviser and national archivist.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche is the acting head of the Library of Congress.

Jamieson Greer is the U.S. trade representative, acting director of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics and acting special counsel of the U.S. Office of Special Counsel.

Russell Vought is director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget and acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Richard Grenell, a special U.S.envoy, is president the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

And Daniel Driscoll is secretary of the Army and the acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

NASA’s Webb Scratches Beyond Surface of Cat’s Paw for 3rd Anniversary

It’s the cat’s meow! To celebrate its third year of revealing stunning scenes of the cosmos in infrared light, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has “clawed” back the thick, dusty layers of a section within the Cat’s Paw Nebula (NGC 6334).

Focusing Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) on a single “toe bean” within this active star-forming region revealed a subset of mini toe beans, which appear to contain young stars shaping the surrounding gas and dust.

Webb’s look at this particular area of the Cat’s Paw Nebula just scratches the surface of the telescope’s three years of groundbreaking science.

“Three years into its mission, Webb continues to deliver on its design – revealing previously hidden aspects of the universe, from the star formation process to some of the earliest galaxies,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, acting director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

“As it repeatedly breaks its own records, Webb is also uncovering unknowns for new generations of flagship missions to tackle.

Whether it’s following up on the mysteries of dark matter with NASA’s nearly complete Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, or narrowing our search for life to Earth-like planets with the Habitable Worlds Observatory, the questions Webb has raised are just as exciting as the answers it’s giving us.”

Star Formation Flex

The progression from a large molecular cloud to massive stars entails multiple steps, some of which are still not well understood by astronomers.

Located approximately 4,000 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius, the Cat’s Paw Nebula offers scientists the opportunity to study the turbulent cloud-to-star process in great detail.

Webb’s observation of the nebula in near-infrared light builds upon previous studies by NASA’s Hubble and retired Spitzer Space Telescope in visible- and infrared-light, respectively.

With its sharp resolution, Webb shows never-before-seen structural details and features: Massive young stars are carving away at nearby gas and dust, while their bright starlight is producing a bright nebulous glow represented in blue.

It’s a temporary scene where the disruptive young stars, with their relatively short lives and luminosity, have a brief but important role in the region’s larger story. As a consequence of these massive stars’ lively behavior, the local star formation process will eventually come to a stop.

Opera House’s Intricate Structure

Start with the toe bean at top center, which is nicknamed the “Opera House” for its circular, tiered-like structure.

The primary drivers for the area’s cloudy blue glow are most likely toward its bottom: either the light from the bright yellowish stars or from a nearby source still hidden behind the dense, dark brown dust.

Just below the orange-brown tiers of dust is a bright yellow star with diffraction spikes. While this massive star has carved away at its immediate surroundings, it has been unable to push the gas and dust away to greater distances, creating a compact shell of surrounding material.

Look closely to notice small patches, like the tuning fork-shaped area to the Opera House’s immediate left, that contain fewer stars.

These seemingly vacant zones indicate the presence of dense foreground filaments of dust that are home to still-forming stars and block the light of stars in the background.

NASA Aircraft, Sensor Technology, Aid in Texas Flood Recovery Efforts

In response to recent flooding near Kerrville, Texas, NASA deployed two aircraft to assist state and local authorities in ongoing recovery operations.

The aircraft are part of the response from NASA’s Disasters Response Coordination System, which is activated to support emergency response for the flooding and is working closely with the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the humanitarian groups Save the Children and GiveDirectly.

Persistent cloud-cover has made it difficult to obtain clear satellite imagery, so the Disasters Program coordinated with NASA’s Airborne Science Program at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston to conduct a series of flights to gather observations of the impacted regions.

NASA is sharing these data directly with emergency response teams to inform their search and rescue efforts and aid decision-making and resource allocation.

The high-altitude WB-57 aircraft operated by NASA Johnson departed from Ellington Field on July 8 to conduct aerial surveys.

The aircraft is equipped with the DyNAMITE (Day/Night Airborne Motion Imager for Terrestrial Environments) sensor.

The DyNAMITE sensor views the Guadalupe River and several miles of the surrounding area, providing high-resolution imagery critical to assessing damage and supporting coordination of ground-based recovery efforts.

This system enables real-time collection and analysis of data, enhancing situational awareness and accelerating emergency response times.

In addition, the agency’s Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) is flying out of NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, aboard a Gulfstream III.

Managed by the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, the UAVSAR team is planning to collect observations over the Guadalupe, San Gabriel, and Colorado river basins Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Because UAVSAR can penetrate vegetation to spot water that optical sensors are unable to detect, the team’s goal is to characterize the extent of flooding to help with understanding the amount of damage within communities.

Flights are being coordinated with FEMA, the Texas Division of Emergency Management, and local responders to ensure data is quickly delivered to those making decisions on the ground.

Imagery collected will be sent to NASA’s Disaster Response Coordination System.

Additionally, the Disasters Program, which is part of NASA’s Earth Science Division, is working to produce maps and data to assess the location and severity of flooding in the region and damage to buildings and infrastructure.

These data are being shared on the NASA Disasters Mapping Portal as they become available.
