A US military plane deporting migrants back to India departed on Monday as President Donald Trump’s crackdown on migrants intensified after he assumed office in the White House, Reuters reported.

An official said the C-17 aircraft had departed for India with migrants aboard but would not arrive for at least 24 hours.

India is the farthest destination for the Trump administration’s military transport flights for migrants.

India ready to take migrants back

The Indian government has expressed its willingness to cooperate with the US in addressing illegal immigration. The issue was also discussed during a phone call between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

As per reports, India has agreed to take back at least 18,000 citizens living illegally in the US. The deportation flight is part of the same commitment.

After Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar and Secretary of State Marco Rubio held bilateral meetings. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said that India is open to the return of undocumented Indians from the United States.

Trump intensifies crackdown

President Donald Trump has increasingly turned to the military to help carry out his immigration agenda. Trump has also sent additional troops to the US-Mexico border, is using military aircraft to deport migrants, and is opening military bases to house them.

So far, military aircraft have flown to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras, carrying illegal migrants.

Military flights are an expensive way to deport migrants. Reuters reported that a deportation flight to Guatemala last week likely cost at least $4,675 per person.

Trump took a hardline stance on immigration during his presidential campaign. Thus, after assuming office in the White House, he is implementing strict policies to curb both legal and illegal migration.

The Trump administration also plans to invoke the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to expedite the deportation of immigrants accused of being gang members, bypassing court hearings. This law was last used during World War II.

"USAID will be merged into the State Department with cuts in the workforce, but it will remain a humanitarian aid entity, sources told @saraecook and me. The Southside Worker Center in Tucson, Arizona, acts as an employment and information center for illegal aliens. Not only is the center linking illegal day laborers with businesses across Tucson, but they are also training illegal aliens to break the law.

On numerous occasions, the Mexican consulate of Tucson has hosted "informational seminars" at the Southside Worker Center.

During one such seminar that we sat in on, former Mexican consulate attorney Mayra De La Torre encouraged illegal aliens to lie to law enforcement. Mayra told illegal aliens that in the event they are questioned by law enforcement while working, to say that they are only volunteering, and to seek asylum by claiming that their life was in danger in their home country.

"This is NPR." That tagline has long been used for National Public Radio, but what it is remains remarkably in doubt. NPR remains something of a curiosity. It is a state-subsidized media outlet in a country that rejects state media. It is a site that routinely pitches for its sponsors while insisting that it does not have commercials. That confusion may be on the way to a final resolution following the election. NPR is about to have a reckoning with precisely what it is and what it represents.

While I once appeared regularly on NPR, I grew more critical of the outlet as it became overtly political in its coverage and intolerant of opposing views.

Even after a respected editor, Uri Berliner, wrote a scathing account of the political bias at NPR, the outlet has doubled down on its one-sided coverage and commentary. Indeed, while tacking aggressively to the left and openly supporting narratives (including some false stories) from Democratic sources, NPR has dismissed the criticism. When many of us called on NPR to pick a more politically neutral CEO, it instead chose Katherine Maher, who was previously criticized for her strident political views.

Some have long questioned the federal government's subsidization of a media organization. NPR itself continues to maintain that "federal funding is essential" to its work. However, this country has long rejected state media models as undermining democratic values.

This funding is likely more important, given NPR's cratering audience and revenue. The NPR’s audience has been declining for years. As a result, NPR has been forced to make deep staff cuts.

Ironically, NPR has one of the least diverse audiences in media. Its listeners are is overwhelmingly white, liberal, and more affluent than the rest of the country. Yet, while serving fewer and fewer people, it still expects most of the country to subsidize its programming.

The US Navy has released stunning images showing its incredible new drone-destroying laser weapon in action for the first time.

The HELIOS system was tested aboard the USS Preble, with photos capturing its bright beam shooting an unmanned aerial vehicle out of the sky.

HELIOS, which stands for High Laser with Integrated Optical-dazzler and Surveillance, was developed by Lockheed Martin in 2021 and delivered to the Navy a year later.

The system blasts more than 60 kilowatts of directed energy, enough to power up to 60 homes, at the speed of light and can hit targets up to five miles away.

It is designed to counter a range of threats, including drones, small boats, and potentially incoming missiles.

HELIOS was also designed to disrupt the intelligence and reconnaissance sensors on enemy vessels.

The testing comes as threats against America's warships are growing as foreign nations stock their arsenals with drones and anti-ship missiles.

The US Naval Institute said in a recent report: The drone threat has been around for years, but the Navy has yet to prioritize defending against these easily acquired weapons.'

'Expecting sailors who shoot shotguns, rifles, or machine guns twice a year on a range to be able to engage multiple small, fast-moving targets is unreasonable, 'the report added.

'Even if a few sailors were expert shooters capable of shooting down drones, it likely would take a few minutes from the first report of a potential drone to identify the drone, raise the alarm, and bring key weapons and associated ammunition to bear against the threat—time the ship might not have.'

But the Navy sees its new HELIOS as a way to fight back, showing off its capabilities on the open ocean.

The US Center for Countermeasures (CCM) released details on the testing, SWNS reported.

The images showed the beam targeting a drone above the ship, shooting it down in a ball of flames.

'CCM supported the Navy’s demonstration on USS Preble (DDG 88) to verify and validate the functionality, performance, and capability of the HEL with Integrated Optical Dazzler and Surveillance system against an unmanned aerial vehicle target, it shared in a report.

The weapon was integrated into the ship's combat system, enhancing its target detection and tracking capabilities.

HELIOS can fire for as long as it has power, which it collects from the ship.

And because the ship's power source is constantly replenished, the laser has an unlimited supply of power.

The test comes as aHomeland Security Advisor and billionaire Marc Andreessensuggested AI-powered jets will be the main fighters in future wars.

Speaking on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in November, Andreessen said jets that travel five times the speed of sound, Mach 5, are going to be more common 'within a few years.'

'Imagine a thousand of these things coming over the horizon right at you,' Andreessen said. 'It really changes the fundamental equation of war.'

He explain that instead of needing the most soldiers and material to win, people with the most technology and money will take over.

Andreessen also noted that there are 'a bunch of reasons' why he believes a future of AI-piloted fighter jets is all but inevitable.

'Part of it is simply the speed of processing,' Andreessen explained.

'But the other big thing is, if you don't have a human in the plane, you don't have [...] 'the Spam in the Can.''

'You don't have the human body in the plane to keep alive, which means you can be a lot faster,' the billionaire White House advisor continued, 'much higher G-forces.'

WASHINGTON, Feb 4 (Reuters) - When Benjamin Netanyahu meets U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, the Israeli prime minister is expected to try to turn the page on sometimes tense relations with the Biden White House as the two leaders address the future of the Gaza ceasefire and ways to counter Iran.

But Netanyahu, the first foreign leader to be hosted by Trump since his Jan. 20 inauguration, could also come under pressure from the staunchly pro-Israel president whose policy goals for the Middle East may not always coincide with Netanyahu's interests.

They will meet just as indirect negotiations are due to resume this week between Israel and Hamas on the second stage of the ceasefire deal and hostage release. The two leaders are expected to hold a joint press conference.

Previewing the meeting, Trump told reporters on Sunday that discussions with Israel and other countries on the Middle East were "progressing." But he offered no details.

The region is at a critical juncture, with the Gaza truce fragile, a parallel uneasy Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement in Lebanon nearing possible expiration in coming weeks and concerns about Iran's nuclear ambitions persisting despite its weakened state.

In his first term, Trump handed Netanyahu a series of successes, including relocation of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv and the signing of the Abraham Accords, normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab states.

He remains a strong supporter of U.S. ally Israel, taking credit for helping broker the Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas militants in the Palestinian enclave even before he returned to office, while insisting he wants to end the wars in the Middle East.

Trump has said he hopes to renew an effort toward historic normalization of relations between Israel and Arab power Saudi Arabia.

That has created uncertainty over how much leeway Trump will give Netanyahu. The prime minister faces demands from far-right members of his coalition threatening to topple his government unless he restarts the fighting in Gaza to fulfill his pledge to destroy Iran-backed Hamas. An ever-raging war would complicate if not block Trump's attempt to bring the Saudis to the negotiating table.

Even so, Netanyahu is all but certain to have a better reception this time than he received from former President Joe Biden.

Though Biden maintained military support for Israel after Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack that prompted the Israeli assault on Gaza, relations were strained at times over the high Palestinian civilian death toll and Netanyahu's defiance of some U.S. demands.

'NO ASSURANCES'

Trump's Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, played a key role in helping the Biden administration secure the long-sought Gaza deal before the Jan. 20 transfer of power in the U.S. and is expected to be heavily involved in the next round. The first phase has led to Hamas' release of 18 hostages and Israel's release of hundreds of jailed Palestinians.

On Monday, Trump acknowledged to reporters that there were no assurances that the ceasefire would hold, though Witkoff added: "We're certainly hopeful."

Trump and Netanyahu have both said they want to include Saudi Arabia in new regional arrangements building on the Abraham Accords, an effort that could help create a bulwark against Iran.

But Netanyahu's steadfast opposition to any move towards a Palestinian state, a stance supported by a growing number of Israelis in the wake of the Gaza war, stands as a potential obstacle to a deal with Saudi Arabia, which has previously insisted on agreement at least on a pathway to an independent Palestine.

Since taking office, Trump has stirred controversy by suggesting that Gazans should be moved to neighboring countries such as Egypt and Jordan, echoing the wishes of Israel's far right and contradicting Biden's commitment against the mass displacement of Palestinians.

The Egyptian and Jordanian governments and other Arab states have rejected the idea.

For Netanyahu, whose international isolation over the Gaza war was underlined by an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) on allegations of war crimes, the visit offers a chance to burnish his diplomatic credentials in Washington, which has come out strongly against the ICC.

Pro-Palestinian activists as well as those calling for the release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas plan separate protests to coincide with Netanyahu's visit to Washington.

Netanyahu will meet other senior Trump aides during his visit as well as congressional leaders and is expected to seek assurances of continued U.S. weapons supplies.

Within days of returning to the White House, Trump approved a shipment of 2,000-pound bombs to Israel that the Biden administration had blocked.

On his departure from Israel, Netanyahu told reporters he hopes his talks with Trump will help further redraw the map of the region. The Gaza war has upended the Middle East, and experts see the potential for more change to come.

High on the agenda will be Iran, which last year launched hundreds of missiles and drones against Israel, drawing Israeli retaliation that was said to have crippled Tehran's air defenses.

Trump quit an international nuclear deal with Tehran in 2018 and both he and Netanyahu have vowed to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, concerns have grown in Iran that the new president might give Netanyahu the go-ahead to hit its nuclear sites.

Trudeau also said that Canada will appoint a Fentanyl Czar, list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, and launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.

Finally, the Canadian PM also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million.

Shortly after Trudeau's post, Trump followed suit on his own Truth Social network, writing that Canada "has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country."

Right now, there’s a nationwide debate raging over a group you may have never even heard of—USAID.

So, what exactly is USAID? Well, if you look on Wikipedia, you’ll see this fairytale definition:

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is an independent agency of the United States government that is primarily responsible for administering civilian foreign aid and development assistance. With a budget of over $50 billion,[4] USAID is one of the largest official aid agencies in the world and accounts for more than half of all U.S. foreign assistance – the highest in the world in absolute dollar terms. USAID has missions in over 100 countries, primarily in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

But as you’ve probably guessed by now, there’s a lot more to this story.

First off. plenty of politicians love USAID—especially crooked snakes like Ilhan Omar, whose third-world hellhole of a homeland raked in $2.3 billion of our tax dollars.

In addition, USAID is operating with basically zero accountability and a mind-blowing $50 billion budget—which is absolutely insane, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently pointed out.

And it’s very clear where Elon Musk stands on this criminal organization.

It’s time to shut down this bloated government slush fund, which is clearly being used for nefarious reasons—and that’s exactly what the Trump administration plans to do and Dems are in an uproar.

But as Senator John Kennedy likes to say— “Get over it.” There’s plenty more pain on the way…

Let’s face it, right now, we’re nearly $37 TRILLION in debt, yet somehow, we’re still throwing taxpayer dollars around like Monopoly money, and meddling in other countries’ affairs. It’s absolute insanity. This nonstop funneling of cash into foreign nations and CIA-backed spy games has to end.

Honestly, the Bolsonaro scheme alone is reason enough to shut down USAID for good—but there are plenty more reasons on the table. Yes, but can your rainbow do this? Late in the day, the Sun set as usual toward the west. However, on this day, the more interesting display was 180 degrees around toward the east. There, not only was a rainbow visible, but an impressive display of anticrepuscular rays from the rainbow's center. In the featured image from Lekeitio in northern Spain, the Sun is behind the camera. The rainbow resulted from sunlight reflecting back from falling rain. Anticrepuscular rays result from sunlight, blocked by some clouds, going all the way around the sky, overhead, and appearing to converge on the opposite horizon an optical illusion. Rainbows by themselves can be exciting to see, and anticrepuscular rays a rare treat, but capturing them both together is even more unusual - and can look both serene and surreal.

NASA’s InSight Finds Marsquakes From Meteoroids Go Deeper Than Expected

With help from AI, scientists discovered a fresh crater made by an impact that shook material as deep as the Red Planet’s mantle.

Meteoroids striking Mars produce seismic signals that can reach deeper into the planet than previously known.

That’s the finding of a pair of new papers comparing marsquake data collected by NASA’s InSight lander with impact craters spotted by the agency’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO).

The papers, published on Monday, Feb. 3, in Geophysical Research Letters (GRL), highlight how scientists continue to learn from InSight, which NASA retired in 2022 after a successful extended mission.

InSight set the first seismometer on Mars, detecting more than 1,300 marsquakes, which are produced by shaking deep inside the planet (caused by rocks cracking under heat and pressure) and by space rocks striking the surface.

By observing how seismic waves from those quakes change as they travel through the planet’s crust, mantle, and core, scientists get a glimpse into Mars’ interior, as well as a better understanding of how all rocky worlds form, including Earth and its Moon.

Researchers have in the past taken images of new impact craters and found seismic data that matches the date and location of the craters’ formation.

But the two new studies represent the first time a fresh impact has been correlated with shaking detected in Cerberus Fossae, an especially quake-prone region of Mars that is 1,019 miles (1,640 kilometers) from InSight.

The impact crater is 71 feet (21.5 meters) in diameter and much farther from InSight than scientists expected, based on the quake’s seismic energy.

The Martian crust has unique properties thought to dampen seismic waves produced by impacts, and researchers’ analysis of the Cerberus Fossae impact led them to conclude that the waves it produced took a more direct route through the planet’s mantle.

InSight’s team will now have to reassess their models of the composition and structure of Mars’ interior to explain how impact-generated seismic signals can go that deep.

“We used to think the energy detected from the vast majority of seismic events was stuck traveling within the Martian crust,” said InSight team member Constantinos Charalambous of Imperial College London.

“This finding shows a deeper, faster path — call it a seismic highway — through the mantle, allowing quakes to reach more distant regions of the planet.”

A machine learning algorithm developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California to detect meteoroid impacts on Mars played a key role in discovering the Cerberus Fossae crater.

In a matter of hours, the artificial intelligence tool can sift through tens of thousands of black-and-white images captured by MRO’s Context Camera, detecting the blast zones around craters.

The tool selects candidate images for examination by scientists practiced at telling which subtle colorations on Mars deserve more detailed imaging by MRO’s High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera.

“Done manually, this would be years of work,” said InSight team member Valentin Bickel of the University of Bern in Switzerland.

“Using this tool, we went from tens of thousands of images to just a handful in a matter of days. It’s not quite as good as a human, but it’s super fast.”

Bickel and his colleagues searched for craters within roughly 1,864 miles (3,000 kilometers) of InSight’s location, hoping to find some that formed while the lander’s seismometer was recording.

By comparing before-and-after images from the Context Camera over a range of time, they found 123 fresh craters to cross-reference with InSight’s data; 49 of those were potential matches with quakes detected by the lander’s seismometer.

Charalambous and other seismologists filtered that pool further to identify the 71-foot Cerberus Fossae impact crater.

The more scientists study InSight’s data, the better they become at distinguishing signals originating inside the planet from those caused by meteoroid strikes.

The impact found in Cerberus Fossae will help them further refine how they tell these signals apart.

“We thought Cerberus Fossae produced lots of high-frequency seismic signals associated with internally generated quakes, but this suggests some of the activity does not originate there and could actually be from impacts instead,” Charalambous said.

Persevering Through Science

The Mars 2020 Perseverance rover continues to live up to its name, pushing forward in search of ancient Martian secrets.

Following a brief period of system verification and remote testing, our operations team is back at full strength, and Perseverance has been hard at work uncovering new geological insights.

We began our latest campaign at “Mill Brook,” a site surrounded by dusty, fine-grained paver stones.

Here, we conducted an abrasion experiment at “Steve’s Trail,” allowing our remote sensing instruments to capture a before-and-after analysis of the rock surface.

SuperCam (SCAM) used its LIBS and VISIR systems to investigate “Bad Weather Pond,” while Mastcam-Z (ZCAM) imaged the entire workspace.

These observations provide invaluable data on the composition, texture, and potential alteration of these rocks.

After wrapping up at Mill Brook — including a ZCAM multispectral scan of “Berry Hill” — Perseverance took a 140-meter drive (about 459 feet) to “Blue Hill” at “Shallow Bay,” a site of immense scientific interest.

The rocks here are rich in low-calcium pyroxene (LCP), making them one of the most intriguing sample targets of the mission so far.

The significance of Blue Hill extends beyond just this one location. The pyroxene-rich nature of the site suggests a potential link to a much larger rock unit visible in orbital HiRISE images.

Given that this may be the only exposure of these materials within our planned traverse, our science team prioritized sampling this Noachian-aged outcrop, a rare window into Mars’ deep past.

And now, we are thrilled to announce:

Perseverance has successfully cored and sealed a 2.9-centimeter (1.1-inch) rock sample from Blue Hill, officially named “Silver Mountain.”

This marks our first Noachian-aged outcrop sample, an important milestone in our mission to uncover the geological history of Jezero Crater.

Since Shallow Bay-Shoal Brook is the only location along our planned route where this regional low-calcium pyroxene unit was identified from orbit, this sample is a one-of-a-kind treasure for future Mars Sample Return analyses.

As we enter the Year of the Snake, it seems fitting that serpentine-bearing rocks have slithered into our focus! While Blue Hill remains a top priority, the tactical team has been highly responsive to the science team’s overwhelming interest in the nearby serpentine-bearing outcrops.

These rocks, which may reveal critical clues about past water activity and potential habitability, are now part of our exploration strategy.

Between our Noachian-aged pyroxene sample and the newfound focus on serpentine-bearing rocks, our journey through Jezero Crater has never been more exciting.

Each step — each scan, each drive, each core sample — brings us closer to understanding Mars’ complex past.

As Perseverance continues to, well, persevere, and as we embrace the Year of the Snake, we can’t help but marvel at the poetic alignment of science and tradition.

Sols 4441-4442: Winter is Coming

Here in Earth’s northern hemisphere, the days are slowly getting longer, bringing with them the promise of an end to winter.

While we are anticipating the return of warmer temperatures, just over 100 million kilometers (more than 62 million miles) away, Curiosity is starting to feel the bite of the colder season.

One of the quirks of Mars’ orbital configuration is that aphelion (when Mars is farthest from the Sun) occurs about a month and a half before the southern winter solstice.

This means that winters in the southern hemisphere (where Curiosity is located) are both longer and colder than those in the northern hemisphere.

Consequently, we need to spend more of our power on keeping the rover warm, limiting the time that can be spent doing science.

Today’s plan was fairly constrained by the available power, so our various instrument and science teams had to carefully coordinate their requests to ensure that we stay within the power limits that have been budgeted out over the next several plans.

Our team is never one to back down from a challenge, so this plan squeezes as much science as possible out of every watt-hour of power we were given.

Our drive from Wednesday’s plan completed successfully (quite an accomplishment in the current terrain!).

One of our wheels ended up perched a few centimetres up on a rock, so we aren’t able to use APXS or DRT today, but we were still able to unstow the arm to take some MAHLI images.

This plan kicks off with a pair of ChemCam and Mastcam coordinated activities. The first of these two focuses on some interesting polygonal fractures that we ended up parked in front of (see the image above).

ChemCam will use its LIBS laser on these fractures before they are imaged by Mastcam. ChemCam will then use its RMI camera to take a mosaic of some features on the crater floor way off in the distance, which Mastcam will also image.

Mastcam then goes it alone, with images of “Vivian Creek” (some sedimentary layers in today’s contact science target), “Dawn Mine” (a potential meteorite), and a trough off of the rover’s right side.

The Environmental Science (ENV) team will continue their monitoring of the environment with a Mastcam tau to measure dust in the atmosphere as well as Navcam cloud and dust devil movies.

After a short nap, the arm is unstopped to take a number of MAHLI images of “Coldwater Canyon,” over a range of distances between 5 and 25 centimeters away (about 2-10 inches).

The second sol of this plan is largely consumed by ENV activities, including another tau and a Navcam line-of-sight observation to monitor dust.

A big chunk of this sol’s plan is taken up by ChemCam passive observations (not using the LIBS laser) of the atmosphere.

This “passive sky” observation allows us to measure atmospheric aerosol properties and the amount of oxygen and water in the air.

Of course, ENV couldn’t have all the fun, so this sol also contains a typical ChemCam LIBS observation of “Big Dalton” with a Mastcam image afterward. After stowing the arm, we will drive off from our current location.

Right before handing off to Monday’s plan, we wrap up with our typical early-morning ENV weekend science time, which includes more tau and line-of-sight dust observations and several Navcam cloud movies.

RAD, REMS, and DAN also continue their monitoring of the environment throughout this plan.

NASA astronaut Donald Roy Pettit has shared a breathtaking picture of Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the tallest structure in the world, from space.

Captured from the International Space Station (ISS), the photograph featured the Burj Khalifa shining brightly against Dubai's well-lit skyline.

Donald shared the picture on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, "Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building from space."

Mr Pettit's photograph of Burj Khalifa went viral in no time, with people marvelling at the beauty of the structure.

"An incredible photo!" said a person.

Another added, "An iconic view! Burj Khalifa truly stands out, even from space."

"What a view! Thank you for sharing," read a comment.

Don Pettit's space shot of the Burj Khalifa came days after NASA's space photograph of Dubai's dazzling city lights was made public by the Dubai Government Media Office.

The image showed Dubai's dazzling network of connectivity including major roads and highways.

It also highlighted the city's strategically located coastline and artificial islands.

Mr Pettit is a 70-year-old chemical engineer and an experienced American astronaut known for his work in orbital astrophotography.

Since being chosen by NASA in 1996, he has completed more than 13 hours of spacewalks and over 500 days in space on several ISS missions.

In addition to his scientific work, Mr Pettit is passionate about space photography and often shares stunning photos of the Earth's landscapes, city lights, and auroras on social media.

He is currently serving as a flight engineer and member of the Expedition 72 crew aboard the orbiting laboratory, where he will spend approximately 6 months conducting science experiments and maintaining the space station.

NASA Advised by Safety Panel to Reevaluate Artemis Missions

The Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, or ASAP, has called on NASA to reevaluate its plans for the Artemis missions.

Members of the safety panel voiced concerns about the multiple first-time goals for Artemis 3 during a meeting held on Jan. 30, Space News reported Saturday.

ASAP stressed that each achievement NASA plans to attain during Artemis 3, the campaign’s first crewed lunar landing mission, comes with risks.

With the number of first-time goals the agency plans to accomplish with the mission, the risks are multiplied and may become more complicated.

The safety panel has already discussed in its 2024 report the potential challenges that multiple firsts may bring.

In the annual report, ASAP mentioned 13 first-time objectives involving the Starship lunar lander and new Axiom Space spacesuits. The number has since multiplied, coinciding with plans to reformulate Orion’s Avcoat heat shield.

“Each first milestone carries its own individual risk and, as these risks are compounded and aggregated, it only increases the overall risk posture for any individual flight mission,” said Bill Bray, an ASAP member.

Amit Kshatriya, deputy associate administrator of the Moon to Mars Program, has already been briefed about the panel’s concerns.

During the SpaceCom conference, Deep Space Logistics Program Manager Mark Wiese mentioned that SpaceX’s approach to delivering cargo has to be modified to meet evolving logistic needs.

SpaceX initially received a contract from NASA in 2020 to proceed with the first gateway Logistics Services program mission using the Dragon XL cargo spacecraft.

Announcement for the Lunar Volatiles Science Partnership with NASA’s VIPER Rover

NASA has published an Announcement for Partnership Proposals (AFPP) inviting proposals from parties interested in partnering with NASA to obtain science data with NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Explorer Rover (VIPER) by landing it on the Moon, operating it, and sharing the science results.

A selected partnership proposal would culminate in a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) for a Lunar Volatiles Science Partnership (LVSP).

Billions have vanished into the pockets of “kleptocrats from Washington to Kiev,” according to the former Russian president

Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s recent claim that he is unaware of the whereabouts of more than $100 billion of Western aid funds allocated to Kiev is a “brazen and cynical lie,”former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has suggested.

In a Telegram post on Monday, Medvedev, who now serves as the Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council,accused Zelensky and his associates of embezzling significant sums. “In a fit of candor, the Bandera regime’s boss admitted that he and his cronies had siphoned off $100 billion,” he stated.

In an interview with AP on Sunday Zelensky claimed that Kiev has received just over $75 billion in military and other types of assistance,out of the $177 billion military aid announced by Washingtonunder the administration of Joe Biden.

“That is, $100 billion of these $177 (or even $200 billion, some people say) we never received,” he insisted. “But when they say that Ukraine received $200 billion during the war to support the army – this is not true. I do not know where all this money is.Maybe it is true on paper, there are hundreds of different programs – maybe, we do not argue, we are very grateful for everything. But we received more than $70–76 billion, something like that,” Zelensky claimed.

Medvedev, in response, alleged that the missing funds benefited individuals in both the US and Ukraine,implicating entities such as the US Department of Defense, CIA, and military contractors. In his post on Monday, he also claimed that “billions stolen in both cash and weapons” are now “popping up all over the globe.”

Medvedev expressed skepticism about any forthcoming accountability, stating: “The thieves will pardon themselves. Biden has already started the process.”

Medvedev suggested that Elon Musk’s “naive yet respectable attempts to investigate ideologically camouflaged theft at USAID [US Agency for International Development], as well as corruption in aid to the failed state of Ukraine, will come to naught.”

Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has been involved in efforts to dismantle USAID. He has publicly described the agency as a “criminal organization” and asserted that it’s “time for it to die.” President Donald Trump accused the agency’s leadership of being “radical lunatics” and has proposed major changes to the organization.

Medvedev concluded that despite potential condemnations and hearings, “aid to Kiev will continue under a reissue of the Reagan motto ‘peace through strength.’”

Station Crew Cleans Up After Spacewalk, Studies Space Agriculture and Physics

The Expedition 72 crew kicked off the first week in February cleaning up after last week’s spacewalk and continuing its space agriculture and microgravity physics experiments.

Other International Space Station science objectives planned on Monday included human research while the orbital residents kept up the maintenance of the orbital outpost.

NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, station Commander and Flight Engineer respectively, are cleaning up following the Jan. 30 spacewalk to remove radio communications hardware and search for microorganisms outside the space station.

Williams worked in the Harmony module disassembling the radio frequency group antenna assembly that she removed during the five-hour and 26-minute spacewalk.

Wilmore serviced the spacesuits that he and Williams wore last week cleaning and reconfiguring suit cooling loops as well as checking the suits’ electrical components.

NASA Flight Engineer Nick Hague began his day assisting Williams with the radio hardware teardown work in Harmony and packing the gear for stowage.

Afterward, Hague moved to the Kibo laboratory module refilling water inside the JAXA’s (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) Plant Experiment Unit.

The small botany research facility, located in Kibo’s Cell Biology Experiment Facility, is supporting an investigation exploring how ultraviolet radiation and weightlessness affect plant growth to learn how to grow food and sustain crews on long-term mission to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

NASA Flight Engineer Don Pettit focused on space physics inside Kibo’s Multi-Purpose Small Payload Rack (MSPR) during the first half of his shift.

He opened up the MSPR and swapped samples inside its Electrostatic Levitation Furnace that can safely heat materials above 2,000 degrees Celsius to measure their thermophysical properties, as well as synthesize new materials in microgravity.

Pettit then joined after the crew’s lunchtime and trained to use ultrasonic inspection hardware.

Roscosmos Flight Engineers Ivan Vagner and Alexey Ovchinin participated in a test to understand how and improve the way international crews communicate with mission controllers from around the world.

Ovchinin then spent the last half of his shift practicing on a computer futuristic spacecraft and robotic piloting techniques crews may use on potential planetary missions.

Flight Engineer Aleksandr Gorbunov spent his day inspecting and photographing cargo stowage areas in the Zvezda service module and testing Roscosmos life support gear.

Gaia reveals two new mysterious celestial objects

New research, published today, uses data collected by ESA’s Gaia spacecraft to confirm the existence of two mysterious celestial objects.

Gaia-4b is a ‘Super-Jupiter’ exoplanet, and Gaia-5b a brown dwarf. These massive objects are unexpectedly orbiting low-mass stars.

Gaia-4b is a planet orbiting the previously unremarkable star Gaia-4 around 244 light-years away. Gaia-5b orbits the Gaia-5 star, around 134 light-years away from Earth.

These two newly discovered objects are nearby, in our own galactic neighbourhood.

Their existence challenges current theories of planet formation, and Gaia's ongoing mission will provide valuable data to help us understand these intriguing objects.

“Gaia-4b is about twelve times more massive than Jupiter. With an orbital period of 570 days, it is a relatively cold gas giant planet,” explains first author Guðmundur Stefánsson of the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and first author of the new study.

“With a mass of around 21 Jupiters, Gaia-5b is a brown dwarf, more massive than a planet but too light to sustain nuclear fusion to be a star,” Guðmundur adds.

Since its launch in 2013, ESA’s Gaia spacecraft has been building the largest, most precise three-dimensional map of our galaxy.

Spinning slowly, it scanned the sky with two optical telescopes, repeatedly pinpointing the positions of two billion objects with unprecedented precision, until its end of science observations on 15 January 2025.

Because Gaia precisely tracked the motion of stars – a technique known as astrometry – thousands of new objects are expected to be discovered in its data.

A planet in orbit around a star creates a tiny gravitational ‘tug’ that makes the star ‘wobble’ around its centre of mass and travel in a corkscrew-like motion across the sky.

The easiest objects to discover using astrometry are massive and in distant orbits around their parent star.

Previously, a few massive brown dwarfs were confirmed to exist by other telescopes who observed their faint glow next to bright stars for which Gaia had detected such a wobble.

That’s in contrast to the transit method, which detects planets as they pass in front of their star and is most likely to find planets in a close orbit.

And although detecting a wobble suggests a star might have a planet, there are other potential causes (such as binary star systems), so astrometric discoveries must be confirmed using other methods.

Kiev reportedly wants to transfer 50,000 personnel to the Ground Forces from other military branches

Ukraine’s generals are reportedly seeking to transfer some 50,000 support personnel to the Ground Forces in a bid to address a critical manpower shortage on the frontline, according to the Ukrainskaya Pravda newspaper on Tuesday. The figure represents a significant increase on earlier estimates published last month.

Ukraine’s top general, Aleksandr Syrsky, acknowledged the limitations of forced mobilization in generating sufficient recruits, after aUkrainian airmancomplained that dozens of skilled specialists were being reassigned from his brigade.An estimated 500,000 potential recruits to the Ukrainian army are avoiding the draft and over 100,000 conscripts have deserted.

Previous media reports said Syrsky had ordered the reassignment of some 5,000 Air Force troops to plug gaps in the infantry. The Ukrainskaya Pravda article claimed a broader plan covering all military branches with a target ten times higher than previously said has been put in place, citing an informed source in the general staff.

Since the conflict with Russia escalated in 2022, military commanders have increasingly deployed drivers, cooks, and medics to the frontline to address personnel shortages, the newspaper explained. However, this practice also leads to misuse, as some officers may employ it as informal disciplinary punishment or a way to eliminate perceived threats to their own authority or corruption.

Additionally, there is resistance among some troops. One brigade commander recounted an incident where he attempted to send 30 members from an intelligence company to reinforce a weakened position, only to have three refuse and 27 go AWOL.

The generals seek to convert combat divers, administrative staff, and non-essential operators of Western-supplied air defense systems like Patriot, NASAMS, and IRIS-T into infantry roles. Such measures are likely to degrade the capabilities of affected branches, Pravda pointed out, saying thatsome of its sources call the present state of combat support units “close to catastrophic”.

In July 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that manpower shortages would ultimately spell doom for the Ukrainian military in a prolonged conflict. He said no amount ofWestern-donated arms can compensate for the losses incurred on Ukrainian forces during their “suicidal attacks.”

The journalist who claimed that the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron was actually born a man is reportedly seeking political asylum in Russia.In an interview with Izvestia, Natacha Rey and her lawyer, Francois Danglehant, have cited “persecution” in France as the reason for her decision.

Rey alleged in 2021 that Brigitte Macron is actually the transgender identity of her brother, Jean-Michel Trogneux. Rey spent three years researching Macron’s supposed secret and later published a video on her findings on social media. Since then, she has been the subject of judicial action in France.

Explaining her decision to seek asylum in Russia, Rey described the country as a great democracy compared to France, which, in her view, persecutes the political opposition and restricts freedom of speech.

“Why did I choose Russia? Because it is a great nation, a great civilization which I admire, defending traditional and Christian values that are inherent to me,” she told Izvestia. According to Rey, Russia has been a “victim of a disinformation campaign and unjustified attacks by European and American media for decades.”

Danglehant insists the charges against his client have been “fabricated.” According to him, false testimony was given by Brigitte Macron's former family, including her ex-husband, Jean-Louis Auziere.

Mrs. Macron sued Rey in 2022 over defamation and for violating her privacy. Last year, a Paris court fined Rey and ordered her to pay €8,000 ($8,200) in damages to the wife of the French president.

Rey's lawyer said that the journalist believes she will be respected in Russia and will not face persecution. He previously claimed that his client had submitted an asylum request to Russian State Duma Deputy Speaker Pyotr Tolsty, but the lawmaker denied this to RT on Monday saying “matters of citizenship are decided by the head of state.”

Danglehant told Izvestia on Monday that his client “has not yet submitted an application but will soon send it to the Russian Embassy in Paris...She believes that in Russia, she may be seen as a normal person, someone with at least some value, somewhat like former US National Security Agency employee Edward Snowden.”

Emmanuel Macron was 17 years old when he declared his intention to marry Brigitte Marie-Claude Trogneux, who is 24 years his senior and was his literature teacher. Brigitte divorced banker Andre-Louis Auziere, with whom she had three children in 2006, and married Macron in 2007.

I just stumbled on a ProPublica site with a tool built in that allows you to see the money wasted by USAID and DoD on failed projects in Afghanistan (up until 2015) and then see what it could have funded in America.

USAID spent $335 million on a diesel fueled power plant that just sat there because Afghans can't afford to import diesel. $300-500 million on a dam that was deemed too unsafe to use. $250 million on a partial road that deteriorated. Millions on healthcare facilities that don't exist. $70 million on contractor fees for projects that were canceled before being started, but they got to keep the money anyway. That sounds nice.

A contractor built a $500k police training facility that melted when it rained because it was made from sand. Really.

The DoD paid almost $500 million for 22 cargo planes that were unsafe to fly and were sold as scraps for about $30k total.

Zero consequences for not delivering. Given more money every year. And this is just Afghanistan to 2015. Imagine the tax dollars being wasted around the world. Sickening stuff.

Airbus SE has hired Goldman Sachs Group Inc. for advice on an effort to forge a new European space and satellite company that can better compete with Elon Musk’s dominant SpaceX, according to people familiar with the matter.

The talks to create a space and satellite business with French aerospace company Thales and Italy’s Leonardo SpA are at an exploratory stage and its full portfolio of services hasn’t been set, the people said, asking not to be identified because discussions are confidential.

Rome-based Leonardo has hired Bank of America Inc. for the plan, which has been dubbed Project Bromo, some of the people said.

Paris-based Thales is also speaking with advisers, the people said. The two companies already have joint ventures on products for satellites and space telecommunications.

Hiring leading M&A advisors represents a concrete step to formalise long-discussed plans for a such a venture.

The firms are weighing issues such as cost, complexity, regulatory obstacles, antitrust implications and also the possibilities for bringing various civil and military contracts under such a transaction the people said.

Representatives for Airbus, Leonardo, Goldman and BofA declined to comment. Thales reiterated that early discussions have taken place, without commenting on advisers.

The move to bring in top M&A advisory firms is further evidence of the companies’ attempt to overcome political and financial hurdles to forming a European champion.

SpaceX has established itself as the industry’s preeminent rocket-launch provider, lofting satellites, cargo and people to space for NASA, the Pentagon and commercial partners.

Its internet-from-space unit Starlink operates the largest and most advanced satellite network in low-Earth orbit. European firms including Airbus have swallowed significant losses trying to keep up.

Webb investigates a dusty and dynamic disc

Herbig-Haro objects are small nebulae found in star formation regions, marking the locations where gas flowing out from young stars is heated into luminescence by shockwaves.

HH 30 is an example of where this outflowing gas takes the form of a narrow jet. The source star is located on one end of the jet, hidden behind an edge-on protoplanetary disc that the star is illuminating.

HH 30 is of particular interest to astronomers. In fact, the HH 30 disc is considered the prototype of an edge-on disc, thanks to its early discovery with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

Discs seen from this view are a unique laboratory to study how dust grains drift and settle.

An international team of astronomers have used Webb to investigate the target in great detail.

By combining Webb’s observations with those from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), the team was able to study the multiwavelength disc appearance of the system.

The long-wavelength data from ALMA trace the location of millimetre-sized dust grains, which are found in a narrow region in the central plane of the disc.

The shorter-wavelength infrared data from Webb reveal the distribution of smaller dust grains. These grains are only one millionth of a metre across – about the size of a single bacterium.

While the large dust grains are concentrated in the densest parts of the disc, the small grains are much more widespread.

These Webb observations were taken as part of the Webb GO programme #2562 (PI F. Menard, K. Stapelfeldt), which aims to understand how dust evolves in edge-on discs like HH 30.

Combined with the keen radio-wavelength eyes of ALMA, these observations show that large dust grains must migrate within the disc and settle in a thin layer.

The creation of a narrow, dense layer of dust is an important stage in the process of planet formation. In this dense region, dust grains clump together to form pebbles and eventually planets themselves.

In addition to the behaviour of dust grains, the Webb, Hubble, and ALMA images reveal several distinct structures that are nested within one another.

A high-velocity jet of gas emerges at a 90-degree angle from the narrow central disc. The narrow jet is surrounded by a wider, cone-shaped outflow.

Enclosing the conical outflow is a wide nebula that reflects the light from the young star that is embedded within the disc.

Together, these data reveal HH 30 to be a dynamic place, where tiny dust grains and massive jets alike play a role in the formation of new planets.

UK scientists plan to monitor krill from space as species threatened by warming

British scientists are hoping to monitor Antarctic krill from space as the species faces growing threats from climate change and overfishing.

WWF, the University of Strathclyde and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) have teamed up for the pioneering project, which will involve comparing light patterns, combined with satellite and remote sensing data, to better understand where populations are and how they are changing over time.

The researchers ultimately hope the work will help to inform decision-makers and safeguard these vital but often overlooked crustaceans.

The tiny creatures are only a few centimetres long but play a critical role in Antarctic marine ecosystems, sustaining penguins, seals and the world’s largest animals, including blue whales.

They also help to draw down and store vast amounts of planet-heating carbon from the atmosphere.

The project, which was launched at the UN climate conference Cop29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November, has kicked off with Strathclyde’s Dr Cait McCarry recently returning from an Antarctic expedition where she was sampling live krill.

Rod Downie, chief polar adviser at WWF-UK, said: “Antarctic krill are the superheroes of the Southern Ocean.

These tiny, unsung heroes are the beating heart of the Southern Ocean, sustaining incredible marine life.

“They are the reason why humpback whales migrate thousands of miles every year to feed in the icy waters around Antarctica.

And they are climate heroes too, playing a critical role in drawing down carbon from the ocean surface.

“But climate change and unsustainable fishing are putting them at risk.

With sea ice declining and industrial fishing growing, we urgently need to better manage the fishery and protect krill habitats within a network of marine protected areas.

‘Krill from Space’ may give us a new tool to help monitor and safeguard this vital species.”

David McKee, reader in the department of physics at Strathclyde, said: “Ocean colour satellites have provided daily global monitoring of the world ocean since 1997.

However, it is only very recently that we have been able to identify a signal associated with the pigment that turns krill red.

“This is a ground-breaking effort to develop a new way to monitor krill swarms at the surface where they are known to occur in huge patches that are important feeding grounds for whales and other important marine species.

“In time we hope to be able to support international conservation and sustainable management of this most important Antarctic species.”

By eating and excreting phytoplankton and shedding their exoskeletons, Antarctic kill can transfer 0.3 million tonnes of carbon to the deep ocean every day, which is equivalent to the UK’s daily carbon emissions.

But rising sea temperatures are causing krill nurseries lose their protective sea ice, causing populations to shrink and shift south.

As a cornerstone to the Antarctic food web above the sea floor, scientists say that protecting the species is critical for maintaining both biodiversity and climate stability.

Sheikh Hamdan announces huge new UAE space mission

Another first for the UAE…

HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has just announced an agreement that will pave the way for the first Emirati Arab astronaut to enter lunar orbit.

In a post shared on social media platform X (previously, Twitter), the Crown Price stated that he attended a ‘signing of a cooperation agreement with Thales Alenia Space’ which marks a ‘major step towards realising the UAE’s space exploration goals, with Thales Alenia Space becoming a strategic partner in the country’s role in the Lunar Gateway Space Station.’

Sheikh Hamdan added that ‘the project will usher in a new era of human space exploration, paving the way for the first Emirati Arab astronaut to enter lunar orbit.’

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) will spearhead the UAE’s involvement in the project.

Sheikh Hamdan also highlighted that the partnership is a ‘vital step toward establishing humanity’s permanent presence on the Moon and enabling future planetary missions.’

He ended the social media post stating he is proud to join forces with ‘the United States, Japan, Canada, and the European Union – to push the frontiers of discovery and exploration.’

During the signing, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the UAE were also present.

Reaching for the stars…

The UAE has made some huge leaps in the field of space exploration in the past few years. And it is showing no signs of stopping with a number of huge mega projects in the pipeline.

Earlier in January 2025, the UAE was in the news for another hugely successful mission with the launch of MBZSAT.

MBZSAT was onboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which successfully shot off to space on January 14, 2025, from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 11.09pm (UAE time).

The satellite project was initially announced in 2020 by the Ruler of Dubai, named in honour of the UAE’s President, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The satellite, currently in orbit, is equipped with a high-tech ‘automated system for arranging images round-the-clock, ensuring that it provides the highest quality standards of satellite images intended for commercial use globally.’

It is operated and managed by the Mission Control Centre at MBRSC.

MBZ-SAT represents a quantum leap in the UAE’s space exploration endeavours. Well done, UAE!

DoD’s Former Top Space Buyer Joins True Anomaly Board

Former DoD space acquisition chief Frank Calvelli has joined the board of True Anomaly to help the startup ensure it’s well positioned to sell to national security customers.

Calvelli, who left the Pentagon last month during the switch to the new administration, said he was drawn to work with True Anomaly because of a few key factors, including the versatility of the company’s Jackal platform, the early focus on ground software, and the startup culture.

“I really like the speed the company is going at,” he told Payload. “And I really like their approach.”

Jackal’s mission: True Anomaly’s Jackal—a maneuverable spacecraft designed to conduct space domain awareness missions—is already working with the Pentagon on the military’s VICTUS HAZE demo, which will see Jackal conduct a rendezvous and proximity operations mission with another spacecraft built by Rocket Lab. The mission is expected to launch in 2025.

Calvelli said he’s a “big fan” of Jackal, in part because it can operate in many different orbits from LEO to cislunar.

Entry point: Calvelli said he sees lots of room for nontraditional commercial companies like True Anomaly to begin working with the national security and intel agencies.

“There’s a space renaissance going on right now,” he said. “The focus we had when I was in the job at the Pentagon was to build smaller systems.

When you build smaller systems, not only do you go faster, but you also are able to work with a whole other sea of companies out there….Space is in a really great time right now to get things done and take advantage of this incredible industrial base.”

What’s next: True Anomaly most recently tested Jackal in orbit in December, after it launched on SpaceX’s Bandwagon-2 rideshare flight.

Their next mission could come as early as May, Calvelli said, highlighting their quick turnaround time.

SpaceX Maxar 3 Mission

SpaceX is targeting Tuesday, February 4 for a Falcon 9 launch of the Maxar 3 mission to orbit from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The 60-minute window opens at 6:07 p.m. ET. If needed, a backup launch opportunity is available on Wednesday, February 5 with a 60-minute window opening at 5:42 p.m. ET.

A live webcast of this mission will begin about 15 minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. You can also watch the webcast on the new X TV app.

This will be the fourth flight for the Falcon 9 first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched GOES-U and two Starlink missions.

After stage separation, the first stage will land on Landing Zone 1 (LZ-1) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Sen. Joni Ernst is accusing USAID of intimidating and threatening her team in a brazen effort to obstruct congressional oversight.

Speaking with DailyMail.com, the Iowa Republican tore into the agency, which has been effectively shuttered by Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) leader Elon Musk.

The senator said that the agency stonewalled her last year when she tried to investigate its cash flow.

'They said, "No, you can't look at it. You're not going to look at these contracts. You don't need access to it, so we're not going to let you see it,"' Ernst recounted.

'Defiant' USAID staff even threatened to bring legal action, the senator said. 'I mean, it is crazy,' Ernst added.

People in Central Florida could hear a loud boom Tuesday evening.

SpaceX crews are preparing to launch and land a Falcon 9 rocket from Florida’s Space Coast.

The hour-long launch window will open at 6:07 p.m.

The launch was scheduled to happen Monday evening but got delayed.

SpaceX plans to send a pair of observation satellites into orbit for Maxar Technologies.

After the launch, SpaceX plans to land the rocket’s first-stage booster back at its landing site at Kenney Space Center.

Due to the landing, a sonic boom advisory has been issued.

SpaceX said there is the possibility that residents of Brevard, Orange, Osceola, Indian River, Seminole, Volusia, Polk, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee County counties may hear one or more sonic booms during the landing.

The universe could undergo a catastrophe that would change absolutely everything, scientists have shown using a quantum machine.

The groundbreaking simulation allowed scientists to better understand a phenomenon that could entirely change the structure of the universe – and about which little is still known.

About 50 years ago, quantum physicists suggested that the universe could be trapped in a so-called false vacuum, where it appears stable but could be about to move into a true vacuum and be even more stable.

That could lead to a total change in the structure of the universe. But scientists know very little about it – including whether it would happen, when, and how long it might take.

Now researchers have used a quantum machine to better understand that process of false vacuum decay. That process is linked to the very beginnings of the universe and so could shed light on both the beginning and end of the cosmos.

“We're talking about a process by which the universe would completely change its structure,” said Zlatko Papic, from the University of Leeds, the lead author on the new paper, in a statement.

“The fundamental constants could instantaneously change and the world as we know it would collapse like a house of cards. What we really need are controlled experiments to observe this process and determine its time scales.”

Scientists used a particular kind of quantum machine to simulate how bubbles behave in a false vacuum. The formation of those bubbles and the ways they then spread and interact could be the beginning of the process of false vacuum decay.

The researchers were able to configure the powerful quantum machine to represent the false vacuum. They could then control the system to move from a false to true vacuum, tracking the process it at a small and short scale so that they could better understand it at the scale of the universe.

“This phenomenon is comparable to a rollercoaster that has several valleys along its trajectory but only one ‘true’ lowest state, at ground level,” said Jean-Yves Desaules, a co-author on the paper.

“If that is indeed the case, quantum mechanics would allow the Universe to eventually tunnel to the lowest energy state or the ‘true’ vacuum and that process would result in a cataclysmic global event.”

A paper describing the work, ‘Stirring the false vacuum via interacting quantized bubbles on a 5564-qubit quantum annealer’, is published in Nature Physics today.
