I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi, of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, Trade Deal. The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries. There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products. Our respective teams will be meeting shortly at a location to be determined. We will be represented by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer. During the conversation, President Xi graciously invited the First Lady and me to visit China, and I reciprocated. As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing. The conversation was focused almost entirely on TRADE. Nothing was discussed concerning Russia/Ukraine, or Iran. We will inform the Media as to scheduling and location of the soon to be meeting. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

What is Fusarium graminearum, the fungus 2 Chinese researchers are charged with smuggling into the US?

Two Chinese researchers were charged with smuggling a fungus classified “as a potential agroterrorism weapon” that could decimate crops and impact human health into the US last summer in a wad of tissues, according to an FBI affidavit in support of the criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

Testing at an FBI laboratory discovered a sample containing the DNA sequence that “would allow a researcher to propagate live Fusarium graminearum,” a fungus that causes “head blight,” in the biological materials that Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, allegedly smuggled into the US, according to the complaint.

Fusarium head blight, or FHB, is a devastating disease for staple crops like wheat, barley, maize and rice. The fungus’ toxins can lead to “vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock,” according to a news release from the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Jian and Liu were charged with conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States, smuggling goods into the United States, false statements and visa fraud for bringing in the fungus Fusarium graminearum from China, the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said on Tuesday.

The criminal complaint does not allege that the defendants – who investigators say were in a relationship – had any plans to spread the fungus beyond the laboratory, but it said Liu was aware of the restrictions on the material and deliberately hid it in his backpack.

A devastating disease for staple crops

Fusarium graminearum is the most common cause of Fusarium head blight in North America and in many other parts of the world. The destructive disease, also called “scab,” has the capacity to “destroy a potentially high-yielding crop within a few weeks of harvest,” according to an article from the journal Molecular Plant Pathology published in 2004. It forms discolored lesions on the crops.

The US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said the fungus “is responsible for billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year.” It is estimated that the losses for all crops in the Central United States and the northern Great Plains totaled $2.7 billion between 1998 to 2000, according to the article from the journal Molecular Plant Pathology.

The fungus spends the winter on infested crop residues like corn stalk or wheat straw.

Wet weather during the growing season causes the fungus to sprout spores, which are then windblown or water-splashed onto the spikes of wheat and barley, according to Gary Bergstrom, emeritus professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science Plant Pathology and Plant-Microbe Biology Section at Cornell University, who has previously published research on the head blight.

If wheat is infected during flowering, the fungus colonizes, killing the florets, and kernels don’t develop. If it is infected later, those plants produce diseased kernels that are shriveled and wilted.

Bergstrom told CNN the impact of the disease and the toxin each year is “like looking at the stock market. It goes up and down,” depending on weather patterns and other environmental details.

“But it has not gone away. The risk is still there. We do get losses every year,” he said Wednesday.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulates the importation of organisms that might negatively impact agriculture in the United States, prohibiting anyone from importing any organism that “directly or indirectly injures, causes damage to, or causes disease in a plant or plant product” without first applying for and obtaining a permit from the USDA, according to the complaint in the case.

The USDA requires a permit for the importation of Fusarium graminearum. According to records maintained by the USDA, the Chinese researchers now charged never applied for, nor were issued, a permit to import the pathogen, the complaint said.

Australia, India, and Japan are among the world’s leading space powers and maintain strong governmental and commercial ties with the United States.

“As China and Russia rapidly develop dangerous space capabilities and behave recklessly in space, the United States must bolster cooperation with our Quad partners to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said Bennet.

“The Quad Space Act will enhance our collective capacity to address shared challenges by better ensuring safe and secure space missions, tracking objects and activities in space, and fostering shared innovation.”

“Maintaining space dominance is vital to protecting the stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific region,” said Cramer.

“The Quad’s alignment addresses shared security challenges between our countries, and we recognize the importance of space as a strategic domain.

The Quad Space Act protects our interests by deepening space cooperation with trusted partners and reaffirming our commitment to advancing a free and open region.”

Specifically, the Quad Space Act:

Requires the Secretary of Defense to initiate discussions with Quad partners to identify areas of mutual interest with regard to best practices in space, cooperation on space situational awareness, and space industrial policy; and

Requires the Secretary of Defense to report to Congress on identified areas of cooperation and potential steps to formalize such cooperation.

The Quad evolved from the “Tsunami Core Group,” which the four countries formed in the wake of the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami to coordinate the emergency response and humanitarian assistance.

The Trump administration revived the Quad in 2017 after nearly a decade of dormancy. The Biden administration then upgraded the Quad to the leaders’ level and expanded the grouping’s work.

The Quad has in recent years cooperated on maritime domain awareness, critical and emerging technology, health, and climate.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s first meeting after taking office on January 21, 2025 was with the Quad foreign ministers.

Bennet is a leading advocate of continued U.S. and allied space superiority. He has since 2022 supported the Space National Guard Establishment Act to create a Space National Guard.

In 2023, he passed a measure, as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), to protect funding for the U.S. Space Command headquarters in Colorado Springs.

In 2024, Bennet secured over $216 million for research, development, and deployment of national defense and aerospace technology to improve U.S. military readiness and capabilities in the space domain.

As part of the NDAA, Bennet also secured passage of the Coordinating AUKUS Engagement with Japan Act, which requires the Department of Defense and State Department to determine how Japan, a crucial U.S. ally, can contribute to the AUKUS partnership between Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Additionally, Bennet played a leading role in passing the April 2024 national security aid package, which included $8.13 billion for Indo-Pacific partners including Taiwan and the Philippines.

That month, he also traveled to Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines to underscore the unwavering U.S. commitment to our allies and partners and discuss areas of future cooperation.

Garneau also held a number of cabinet positions as a Liberal MP from Montreal. Former astronaut and cabinet minister Marc Garneau has died. He was 76.

A statement from his wife, Pam Garneau, says he passed away peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by his family.

Marc faced his final days with the same strength, clarity and grace that defined his life, the statement says.

She says the family is grateful for the outpouring of support, concern and kind words received over the past few days and also asks for privacy as we grieve this profound loss and take time to reflect and heal.

Garneau was born on Feb. 23, 1949, in Quebec City. He studied engineering physics at the Royal Military College of Kingston, graduating in 1970, and he earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London in 1973.

He then began his career by enlisting in the Canadian Navy, where he served from 1974 to 1983. After that, Garneau became the first Canadian to travel to space as part of a NASA mission in 1984.

After holding various positions at the Canadian Space Agency, he became its first vice-president, then its president, from late 2001 until 2005.

Marc was my role model, mentor, 30-plus-year close friend and an exemplary Canadian for us all, said former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield in a statement. My heart goes out to his family. The world lost a very good man.

In 2008, Garneau was elected as a Liberal in what was then the Quebec riding of Westmount–Ville-Marie. In 2013, ridings were redrawn, and he was elected to represent Notre-Dame-de-Grâce–Westmount.

He served as minister of transport in Justin Trudeau's government from 2015 to 2021, and then as minister of foreign affairs from January to October 2021.

Garneau resigned from the House of Commons in March 2023. On X Wednesday, Trudeau says he was in school in the early 1980s when he first met Garneau.

I was in awe of his service and courage then, and continued to be so when I had the privilege of serving alongside him in Parliament and in government, says Trudeau.

Throughout his life, Marc truly embodied and radiated the greatness of Canada.

Garneau was well known in the community

Westmount Mayor Christina Smith remembers volunteering on Garneau's campaigns before he took office, and served on his riding association.

He was so incredibly generous with his time with people, and especially kids, said Smith, recalling him visiting a robotics summer camp or reading Hadfield's book to children last summer.

Everywhere he went, kids wanted to talk to him, she said.

And not only was Garneau working to keep local organizations funded and attending events, he was also a Westmounter whom people would see walking down Sherbooke Street, stopping by the pharmacy or grocery shopping, she said.

People got to see him. They got to know him, said Smith. He was so respected. All the tributes you're going to see, they're so genuine.

Striking satellite images show Mount Etna's eruption from space

Mount Etna's violent eruption on Monday morning (June 3) could be seen from space as striking satellite images photographed the event on the Italian island of Sicily.

Etna is the largest and most active volcano in Europe, and with this latest eruption, tourists could be seen running away as the volcano was spewing out smoke.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) had noted Mount Etna was experiencing “intense and almost continuous” strombolian explosions.

“The INGV-Osservatorio Etneo informs that over the last few hours, the eruptive activity already mentioned in the previous statement has continued with strombolian explosions of increasing intensity that, at the moment, are to be considered to be very intense and almost continuous,” the research institute said on Monday.

The photographs taken by the Copernicus Sentinel-2C satellite were captured "just minutes after the onset of the eruption", sending a massive plume of ash four miles (6.5km) into the sky.

(The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre had issued a brief red warning for this, but no flights were been disrupted in the end.)

"Copernicus data is key to tracking global volcanic activity, helping communities to assess hazards, support emergency response operations, and monitor long-term changes to landscapes," Copernicus said in a post, alongside the satellite images.

A pyroclastic flow also occurred (a fast-moving combination of hot gas and volcanic matter) that was seen falling down one of the mountain faces following the collapse of material from a part of the crater, and also produced hot molten lava plumes as a result.

To understand the danger of pyroclastic flows, on average, they travel 60 miles per hour (100 kmph) and can reach temperatures up to 1,000°C (1,800°F).

Where did this cloud from Mt Etna travel?

According to INGV, the water and sulphur dioxide cloud was "drifting towards the southwest" at the start of the eruption, and then it noted "the falling of a little thin ash has been flagged" in the Piano Vetore area, where there is a wildlife park.

Thankfully, the flow didn't cause any harm in this instance. Renato Schifani, President of the Sicily region, said experts had assured him there was "no danger for the population" as the flow didn't go past the Valley of the Lions, a tourist area.

As seen in the images, a "fine reddish material" was also produced by the pyroclastic flow over the northwest.

What is the Mount Etna situation as of now?

According to the latest statement by INGV, the eruption activity has ceased.

The last time Mount Etna violently erupted was on 14 August last year, and resulted in airport closures nearby after the eruption sent a smoke plume 5.9 miles (9.5 kilometers) high.

MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. – Two workers were killed Wednesday afternoon in an industrial accident involving a construction crane on Florida’s Space Coast, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene shortly before 2 p.m. following reports of a crane collapse at a construction site on Merritt Island.

First responders confirmed that two workers were transported to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, and details about what led to the collapse remain unclear.

The accident will now be the subject of a lengthy investigation by local and possibly federal officials.

The region had been under a tropical envelope for days, meaning the recent string of wet weather likely resulted in unsteady terrain.

Additionally, the National Weather Service said there were wind gusts of 30-50 mph along the coast, but values were well below what is considered to be damaging or severe.

Officials have also not stated whether the crane was in operation at the time of the incident or if there were any warning signals before the collapse.

Photos and videos from the scene showed a large crane mangled at the construction job site, with workers and law enforcement on the periphery of the collapse.

According to emergency management, workers have been constructing a new hospital, which is expected to open in 2027.

Once completed, the 267,900-square-foot facility will have 120 private patient rooms, 25 emergency department treatment rooms, four emergency treatment bays and six operating rooms.

Due to the future hospital’s proximity to the coastline, the medical center is being built to withstand the strength of a Category 4 hurricane.

Inquiries to the health system were unanswered as of Wednesday evening.

LONDON, June 5 (Reuters) - Seven Church of England priests, including a former senior bishop, will face disciplinary proceedings over safeguarding failures in the first such move since Archbishop Justin Welby was forced to stand down last year over a child abuse scandal.

Former Archbishop George Carey, who was in February named in a list of 10 historic cases that would be considered by an independent judicial process, would not face any further action, the Church also said in an update published on Thursday.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a list of jurisdictions with “sanctuary” policies that obstruct immigration enforcement late last week, including three in Maine, before removing the list on Sunday following backlash from cities objecting to their inclusion.

“We are exposing these sanctuary politicians who harbor criminal illegal aliens and defy federal law. President Trump and I will always put the safety of the American people first. Sanctuary politicians are on notice: comply with federal law,” said DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.

The now-deleted list (archived here) accused the city of Portland, and the counties of Cumberland and Hancock, of “deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws, endangering American communities.”

The list was compiled in compliance with an April executive order demanding the creation of a public list of all states and local jurisdictions that obstruct immigration enforcement.

According to the DHS, each jurisdiction on the list will receive a formal notice of non-compliance with federal law, demanding that they immediately revise their policies.

It is unclear whether all of the over 500 jurisdictions listed received notice before the list was taken down. At least some have received the notices; Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce confirmed in a statement to Maine Public that he received the notice on Thursday night.

Joyce claimed that he received an almost identical notice in January and is unsure why Cumberland is considered to be in violation of federal law, because the Cumberland County Jail currently houses inmates on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“We are housing ICE inmates for ICE, so I am not sure how it can be claimed that we are not cooperating. With that said, we are not doing the work of ICE because we don’t have the expertise or authority to do so,” said Joyce.

He suggested that the county’s inclusion could have to do with its failure to sign up for ICE’s 287(g) program, which allows a local law enforcement agency to partner with ICE to aid in immigration enforcement activities.

Currently, only Wells is part of that program and has paused its agreement, suggesting that every other Maine jurisdiction would also be on the list of sanctuary cities if failure to participate were alone enough to warrant inclusion.

The real reason for Cumberland’s inclusion on the list is likely because of a 2017 policy implemented by Joyce, which states that the county will not comply with immigration detainer requests unless a warrant or probable cause is provided.

Hancock County has similar policies. The Maine Wire reached out to Hancock County Sheriff Scott Kane, asking about his jurisdiction’s inclusion on the list, but he did not immediately respond.

Portland currently has a policy preventing staff and police officers from asking about immigration status in many cases, likely running afoul of the DHS’s criteria, which includes jurisdictions on the list based on failure to comply with federal law enforcement, information restrictions, and legal protections for illegal aliens.

Portland Police Chief Mark Dubois also confirmed that Portland Police officers will not contact ICE for any reason.

Though the Maine jurisdictions on the list do appear to have policies constituting some level of non-compliance with ICE, other jurisdictions protested their inclusion, which appeared to lead to the list’s deletion.

Shawano County, Wisconsin, for example, which voted for President Donald Trump by a significant margin, has “no idea” why it was included on the list, though County Administrator Jim Davel suggested that the inclusion may have sprung from a misunderstanding of the county’s 2021 Second Amendment sanctuary policy.

The DHS has not indicated when or if the list will be amended and reposted.

Elon Musk's swift departure from his signature Department of Government Efficiency and the White House was escalated by an outburst that turned violent, according to a high-profile insider.

Former Chief Strategist Steve Bannon told DailyMail.com that Musk's turbulent time in the White House was marred when he physically 'shoved' 62-year-old Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after he was confronted over wild promises to save the administration 'a trillion dollars'.

'Scott Bessent called him out and said, 'You promised us a trillion dollars (in cuts), and now you're at like $100 billion, and nobody can find anything, what are you doing?'' the prominent MAGA figure revealed.'And that's when Elon got physical. It's a sore subject with him.

'It wasn't an argument, it was a physical confrontation. Elon basically shoved him.'

Bannon said the physical altercation came as the two billionaires moved from the Oval Office to outside Chief of Staff Susie Wiles' office, and then outside the office of the then National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz.

'Trump 100%' sided with Bessent after the clash, he added.'I don't think Bessent has any bad blood, but he's got a job to do and he's going to do it'.

The revelation of a confrontation between the pair was confirmed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday.

'It's no secret President Trump has put together a team of people who are incredibly passionate about the issues impacting our country', she said in a statement to DailyMail.com.

'Disagreements are a normal part of any healthy policy process, and ultimately everyone knows they serve at the pleasure of President Trump.'

Musk's time in the Trump White House as a 'special government employee' was only ever to last five months. But just as he was due to exit, he broke ranks by publicly trashing the administration's 'Big Beautiful' domestic bill.

As Musk's time at the White House came to a close, Bessent took to his X platform to publicly thank the Tesla CEO on his way out, saying he did 'very important work' and said he was 'committed to not letting the bureaucracy slow it down' now Musk is gone.

The revelations of the Musk-Bessant clash follow an explosive New York Times report that alleged Musk was using a cocktail of drugs on the campaign trail including ketamine, ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms.

Bannon added that Musk also lost status in Trump's orbit when it was leaked to the New York Times in March that the billionaire was preparing to receive top-secret military briefings on China, which Trump abruptly stopped. The fight between Musk and Bessent was initially reported in April, however the extent of the alleged physicality of the clash was not previously known.

Bannon said Musk's alleged shortcomings with DOGE were exacerbated when Trump gave his State of the Union address earlier this year, when the president listed millions of allegedly fraudulent Social Security recipients aged over 100.While Musk claimed to have uncovered a scandal, it was alleged that these were primarily due to an accounting error, and no significant money was sent to these recipients.

'Not one penny was ever shown to have been sent to these people,'Bannon said. 'Is anyone trying to talk to Elon now? No.'

Musk's departure from the White House comes as the Trump administration is grappling with its 'Big Beautiful Bill' in Congress. The billionaire broke ranks earlier this week as he trashed the bill for its spending increases, which Musk fumed had 'undermined' the work he had done at DOGE.

But Bannon blamed the fallout from the bill squarely on Musk's shoulders, saying the White House and Congressional Republicans relied on him to cancel out the spending with his DOGE cuts and he didn't deliver.

'The political class on Capitol hill willingly got behind a pied piper and wasted five months,' he said.

'The people at fault here are Congress,' he continued. 'They wanted to have a fairy godmother come in and wave a magic wand and say, its all fraud, and get them off the hook.

'Particularly (Speaker) Johnson… they didn't invite Musk to Capitol hill because they think he's politically radioactive, and they all lined up and didn't do the work on these bills... There's no cuts.'

Bannon insisted that he was a supporter of the DOGE mission and said 'we have to cut out every penny we can', but felt Musk failed to live up to the promise.

With the nation's finances set to fall under the spotlight as Congress works to pass the 'Big Beautiful Bill', Bannon said the most pressing crisis will be the impact on the bond markets, and said the fallout could become a 'Liz Truss moment.'

'This is a crisis, unless we get our arms around this we're going to have a Liz Truss moment.'

Bannon clarified that he did not mean the crisis could bring Trump downin the way that it did with the former UK Prime Minister, but warned that the looming financial fallout could have the same impact on the markets that her bungled premiership had.

'Where is the fraud? The Pentagon is a cesspool of fraud, where is it? Where are the criminal referrals?' he added.

One of those is a former Manchester United midfielder who now plays for Lyon

Former Manchester United star Nemanja Matic has received a ban in France after taping over a LGBTQ+ logo during a match.

Matic, who now plays for Lyon, has been hit with a two-game ban after covering the rainbow-coloured Ligue 1 logo on his shirt against Angers on the final day of the season.

Ligue 1 runs an annual anti-homophobia campaign which asks players to wear the imagery and sees banners displayed in stadiums.

Another player, Le Havre midfielder Ahmed Hassan, has received the same ban after covering his logo. However, Nantes striker Mostafa Mohamed has not been punished after refusing to take part in the final match of the season.

Matic is believed to be a member of the Serbian Orthodox Church while Mohamed and Hassan are Muslim.

Matic and Hassan have also been asked to take part in an awareness campaign about homophobia in football, as per HLN.

Biden’s White House physician subpoenaed for deposition by House Oversight Chair

House Oversight Chair James Comer has subpoenaed former President Joe Biden’s White House physician to appear for a deposition later this month, according to a copy of the subpoena letter shared with CNN.

The subpoena to Dr. Kevin O’Connor marks an escalation of the Republican chairman’s probe into Biden’s mental fitness and decline.

In the subpoena letter, Comer said O’Connor was not complying with the committee’s initial voluntary request for a transcribed interview.

The letter from Comer states that counsel for O’Connor responded to the committee’s request for testimony, saying that the physician can’t appear for the requested interview, citing legal and ethical obligations as well as “physician-patient privilege.” The letter from Comer says that “these arguments lack merit.”

CNN has reached out to O’Connor for comment.

The subpoena comes as President Donald Trump ordered an investigation into Biden’s actions and autopen use in a Wednesday memorandum that cites his predecessor’s “cognitive decline.”

Biden dismissed the suggestions in Trump’s memo, saying in a statement Wednesday evening, “Let me be clear: I made the decisions during my presidency. I made the decisions about the pardons, executive orders, legislation, and proclamations. Any suggestion that I didn’t is ridiculous and false.”

The former president went on to call his successor’s executive action a “distraction.”

Comer has ramped up his investigation into Biden’s mental fitness in recent days, requesting interviews with nearly a dozen former key aides.

“Whatever,” Musk fired back as the president spoke.

Musk, the world’s richest man, in recent days has threatened to make lawmakers who vote for the bill face primary elections and called the bill a “disgusting abomination,” marking a significant shift in his comments about the administration.

The fall in shares comes after the EV maker saw a 22% rally in May despite weak sales numbers, with Musk wrapping up his time as head of Trump’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE.

Shares are down nearly 18% this week as Musk has continued to rail against the budget bill. This year, shares are down nearly 30% and well off the high of $488.54 reached Dec. 18.

Since Musk’s special government employee term ended Friday, he’s appeared at odds with the Trump administration and gone on a full assault against the president’s signature tax-cut bill.

“One of the things about Elon is when he goes all in, he goes all in,” Walter Isaacson, author of a Musk biography, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Thursday.

“He is somebody who’s not exactly calibrated in these things and he is seriously upset,” Isaacson said.

Musk, who also runs SpaceX and xAI, posted a stream of attacks against the Trump bill on X Wednesday.

NBC News reported that Musk had tried to convince Trump and other GOP members of the administration to change aspects of Trump’s bill that would curtail EV and residential solar tax credits, which generate profits for Tesla.

The measure would also impose a new annual $250 fee on EV drivers.

Tesla is facing more fundamental problems, with plummeting sales of its electric vehicles in major markets in Europe and a declining brand reputation in the West.

Tesla is also under pressure to launch a long-delayed, driverless ride-hailing service this month in Austin, Texas.

Musk has said that Tesla is testing driverless vehicles in that market, but its primary competitor Waymo is already operating a major commercial robotaxi service there in partnership with Uber.

Isaacson said Thursday that Musk was also annoyed with members of the Trump administration who worked against the nomination of Jared Isaacman as head of space agency NASA.

“That, to Musk, was just infuriating because they were doing, they were going after Jared Isaacman ... to get at Musk,” Isaacson said Thursday.

Isaacman’s nomination was pulled over the weekend.

Isaacman led two private spaceflights through Musk’s SpaceX, in 2021 and 2024, commanding crews on trips around the Earth. His payment tech company Shift4 said in financial filings that as of June 30, 2021, it had invested $27.5 million in SpaceX as well.

The sixth iteration of GM's small-block V-8 will be built in Buffalo, New York, and the engines will power future full-size trucks and SUVs.

-General Motors announced an $888 million investment in the Tonawanda Propulsion plant for the production of a next-generation V-8.

General Motors has heavily invested in electric vehicles. Over the past couple of years, it has launched everything from the affordable Chevy Equinox EV to the luxurious Cadillac Escalade IQ to the Chevy Silverado EV truck. But GM isn't giving up on internal-combustion engines either, as yesterday it announced that it will be investing $888 million in the production of a new generation of V-8 engines.

The sixth generation of GM's small-block V-8 is due to start production in 2027 and will continue to be built at the Tonawanda Propulsion plant in Buffalo, New York. The $888 million investment into the facility will bring new machinery and tools for producing the next iteration of the V-8, as well as renovations to the factory, GM said in a statement.

Before 2027, the Tonawanda plant will continue assembling the fifth-generation V-8 power plant, made in both 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter guises. The Tonawanda plant also produces the V-8-based 4.3-liter V-6 found in the Chevy Express van, as well as the 6.2-liter V-8 used in the Corvette sports car.

General Motors says the next-generation V-8 that will be built at Tonawanda will be used for full-size trucks and SUVs, and the timeline of production starting in 2027 aligns with the expected arrival of a next-generation Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. GM's next-generation full-size trucks will be followed shortly thereafter by new versions of the Chevy Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade, all of which were refreshed for the 2025 model year.

GM says it expects the new engines to improve performance while reducing emissions and becoming more efficient. The investment in the Tonawanda facility follows a $500 million investment in the Flint Engine plant from 2023, which is also dedicated to the production of the sixth-generation V-8.

The price of silver moved sharply higher Thursday morning and hit its highest level in more than a decade.

Silver futures

rose as high as $36.27 per troy ounce on Thursday, notching the highest price for the metal since early 2012. Silver futures were last up more than 3% on the day at $35.81 per troy ounce.

Silver has been a high-performing asset in 2025 and is now up more than 20% year to date. That is still lagging the move in gold

, however, which has jumped about 28%. The price of gold was down slightly on Thursday, meaning silver’s rally closed some of the gap between the two.

Silver has industrial uses, including in solar panels, and is also seen by some investors as a defensive precious metal, similar to gold. A recent survey from the Silver Institute estimated that the supply of silver was about 15% lower than demand in 2024 and projected another deficit in 2025.

Nissan’s newly minted CEO Ivan Espinosa wasted no time making waves, bluntly admitting at a recent press conference: “The reality is clear. We have a very high cost structure.” He’s not sugar-coating the company’s woes either: “We see that our company is really struggling.”

Since taking the reins in April, Espinosa has rolled out a massive restructuring plan, “Re: Nissan,” that slashes 20,000 jobs—15% of its global workforce—and cuts its production capacity by nearly a third, according to Nikkei.

“The urgency for us is now to bring stability back into the company,” he insisted. “We are doing [the reform] because it is truly necessary and it is something that is truly painful for us to do, but unfortunately, it is one of the only ways to save our company.”

His plan smacks of déjà vu: Carlos Ghosn’s 1999 turnaround saw similar layoffs and plant closures. But Espinosa insists it’s not a Ghosn rip-off: “I think they didn’t imitate or were not conscious of Ghosn’s plan,” said Takaki Nakanishi, a top analyst, adding, “It’s just that their KPIs ended up being similar.”

Nikkei writes that unlike Ghosn’s days of a “treasure trove” of competitive products and a helpful yen, Nissan now faces Chinese EV juggernauts, a battered product lineup, and a messy divorce from Renault. “Renault no longer wants Nissan,” Nakanishi deadpanned.

Homeland Security details shocking abuse of migrant children; adults impregnated children

The Biden administration placed some illegal immigrant children with sponsors who got them pregnant, the Homeland Security Department said Thursday.

In other cases, minors who showed up at the border without parents were sent to live with adults who possessed child pornography, had serious criminal records or forced the children into labor.

Hundreds of thousands of these unaccompanied alien children surged into the U.S. as part of the Biden border breakdown. The administration struggled to process them. Facing overcrowded and dangerous conditions, it cut corners to push the children out of detention as quickly as possible, leaving some in unsafe placements, the government now says.

“Children’s safety and security is nonnegotiable,” said Laszlo Baksay, a spokesperson at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “The previous administration’s failure to implement meaningful safeguards has allowed vulnerable kids to fall into the hands of criminals.”

Homeland Security Investigations, a division of ICE, has spent the past few months trying to check up on the children. Thursday’s findings grew out of that effort.

Some of the children were living in what ICE described as “neglect.” Others were with sponsors who had criminal records that included assault, drug trafficking, prostitution and attempted murder.

In what the agency called the “most disturbing cases,” girls were pregnant with children fathered by their “alleged sponsors.”

Unaccompanied alien children have long been among the toughest immigration cases, creating difficulties for all involved.

The children face horrific dangers en route to the U.S. Once in custody, they are supposed to be placed with sponsors who can look after them while they fight for permanent legal status.

Because of the sheer number of sponsors during the Biden administration, which in some early months topped 18,000, the government couldn’t vet sponsors properly under the rules inherited from the previous Trump administration.

The Health and Human Services Department loosened the requirements, but analysts said the result was more dangerous placements.

Federal watchdogs previously said the government had lost track of tens of thousands of children and failed to keep tabs on hundreds of thousands more.

The Trump administration vowed to track down the children it could, but welfare checks have been tricky.

Jarrod Sadulski, a child trafficking expert who has testified to Congress on these issues, said investigators made 100,000 attempts but located only about 5,000 children, or a rate of just 5%.

They identified more than two dozen cases that showed signs of trafficking.

Mr. Sadulski said HHS also ignored more than 65,000 calls to its UAC abuse hotline.

Sen. Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican, said last week that 7,300 of those calls involved accusations of trafficking and nearly 1,700 alleged fraud.

Mr. Sadulski said people could sign up as sponsors by identifying themselves with as little as a texted photo of a driver’s license.

That meant people with no connection to the children could pose as parents or other relatives and claim custody.

In one criminal case brought this year, authorities charged an illegal immigrant from Guatemala with fraudulently obtaining sponsorship of an unaccompanied alien child. He had submitted a badly photoshopped picture of himself and a woman to claim he was the child’s father, investigators said.

In a second instance, the man tried to claim sponsorship of another child with an ID that didn’t belong to him, investigators said.

HHS approved the first application but managed to deny the second one.

Federal prosecutors in New Mexico, meanwhile, brought charges against a 35-year-old man who they said paid to smuggle a 17-year-old girl to his home in Virginia.

Luis Alonso Argueta-Diaz told federal agents he was paying to have the girl come to a “safe place” and be a nanny for his three children, according to court documents. He admitted to paying $2,000 to the girl’s mother in Honduras. The girl said her total smuggling fee was $20,000, most of which was still outstanding.

Even as the welfare checks unveil troubling cases, immigrant rights groups complain that the stories are scaring migrants.

El Pais reported last month that more than 100 unaccompanied alien children had been displaced because of the checks.

“These welfare checks are planting fear, panic, and confusion among children and family members around the country,” Jason Boyd, vice president of federal policy for Kids in Need of Defense, told the news outlet. “Numerous minors have been subjected to deportation proceedings after such checks, which are by definition a tactic of migratory control.”

ICE, in announcing its findings Thursday, said immigration enforcement isn’t the purpose of the checks but said if agents or officers come across someone in the U.S. illegally, they will take them into custody.

The Trump administration has moved to tighten the rules on sponsorship to protect children. That includes requiring an unexpired authentic identification, which appears to be blocking many illegal immigrants from claiming sponsorship of their own children.

Just 45 minors were released to sponsors in April, down from more than 5,000 each month in late 2024.

A federal judge is deciding whether to block the Trump administration’s changes.

US engineers create self-healing robot skin that detects, seals, and resets

Nebraska engineers built a soft robot muscle that mimics human healing, using heat and liquid metal to fix and forget damage.

While not as dramatic as that film, engineers from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln have developed a promising new soft robotics system that can detect and repair its own damage.

This autonomous, self-healing artificial muscle mimics how human and plant skin react to injury.

The work, led by Husker engineer Eric Markvicka and graduate students Ethan Krings and Patrick McManigal, could reshape how electronics and machines handle damage.

Markvicka’s team focused on a longstanding gap in biomimicry: the ability to sense and heal damage like living organisms do.

“In our community, there is a huge push toward replicating traditional rigid systems using soft materials, and a huge movement toward biomimicry,” Markvicka said.

“While we’ve been able to create stretchable electronics and actuators that are soft and conformal, they often don’t mimic biology in their ability to respond to damage and then initiate self-repair.”

To solve this, the team designed a three-layer artificial muscle. The bottom layer is a soft electronic skin made of silicone embedded with liquid metal microdroplets, which detects and locates damage.

The middle layer consists of a stiff thermoplastic elastomer that enables self-healing.

On top, the actuation layer moves the muscle when it’s pressurized with water.

The artificial muscle can detect where damage occurs, then kickstart a healing process without help from humans.

It works by running five monitoring currents through the electronic skin. When damaged, this skin creates a new electrical path. The system recognizes this path and increases current through it, turning the damaged area into a Joule heater.

The resulting heat melts and reseals the middle layer, closing the puncture.

Later, the system must be reset by removing the damage footprint from the bottom layer.

To reset the system, the team used electromigration, which is usually a problem in electronics.

Electromigration shifts metal atoms when current flows through them, often leading to failure in circuits.

Markvicka’s team harnessed this failure mode to intentionally erase the damage path, making the system reusable.

“Electromigration is generally seen as a huge negative,” Markvicka said.

“It’s one of the bottlenecks that has prevented the miniaturization of electronics. We use it in a unique and really positive way here. Instead of trying to prevent it from happening, we are, for the first time, harnessing it to erase traces that we used to think were permanent.”

The implications of this self-repairing tech stretch far beyond the lab.

In agriculture-heavy states like Nebraska, robots often get damaged by thorns, twigs, or plastic. Self-healing systems could extend their lifespans. Wearable medical devices could also benefit, surviving the rigors of daily use.

More broadly, reducing electronic waste could help protect environmental and human health.

“If we can begin to create materials that are able to passably and autonomously detect when damage has happened, and then initiate these self-repair mechanisms, it would really be transformative,” Markvicka said.

Their findings were recently presented at the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in Atlanta, Georgia.

It earned recognition as one of only 39 Best Paper Award finalists out of 1,606 submissions.

HARLINGEN, Texas – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with the support of Texas Department of Public Safety and U.S. Marshals Service, arrested 25 illegal aliens June 4 during a targeted worksite enforcement operation that took place at two construction sites, South Padre Island and Brownsville, Texas.

"Today’s arrests reflect ICE’s unwavering commitment to upholding the integrity of our immigration system and protecting our nation’s workforce. Individuals who violate federal immigration and employment laws not only undermine fair labor standards but also pose potential security and safety risks. Today, the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division sent a letter to the Wisconsin Elections Commission regarding its failure to provide a complaint process or hearing for Wisconsin voters, in violation of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA).

The letter states that the Wisconsin Elections Commission failed to meet HAVA’s requirement of a state-based administrative complaint procedure. Compliance with all federal elections laws is mandatory, and the receipt of federal funds under HAVA is conditioned on compliance with the Act.

Election integrity and compliance with federal elections laws are essential to protect our constitutional republic. Wisconsin’s refusal to give complainants any recourse to report violations they may have observed or experienced while voting is a significant violation of federal law, and a betrayal of the confidence of the American people.

“Courts across the land, including our highest court, have repeatedly defended measures to ensure election integrity,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, “We have made it our highest priority to identify jurisdictions that fail to follow our elections laws and vigorously enforce the law by all means available.”

The letter issued today also notifies the U.S. Election Assistance Commission of Wisconsin’s unlawful actions and calls for the withholding of federal funds to Wisconsin for violating HAVA.

Maricopa County Republican Committee EGC Votes Unanimously to Demand the DOJ Investigate the State Bar of Arizona

The Executive Guidance Committee (EGC) of the Maricopa County Republican Committee unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday calling for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to “[i]mmediately commence an [i]nvestigation of the State Bar of Arizona [SBA].”

The resolution, which was enacted by nearly 100 members present, comes after Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network (NAN), Phoenix Metro chapter, also urged the DOJ to investigate the SBA due to its targeting of conservative, minority, and other attorneys.

The document focused on the SBA’s disbarment of former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, who “was the only Maricopa County Attorney who has ever fully enforced the state’s laws against illegal immigration, resulting in illegal immigrants leaving the state in droves while he and Sheriff Arpaio were in office.” It said “the State Bar of Arizona was weaponized for this purpose against Mr. Thomas and his deputies.” Thomas was elected to office in 2004 and served until April of 2010.

The EGC noted that “the disbarment of Mr. Thomas and the destruction of the legal careers of his deputies violated their civil rights, greatly damaged the rule of law in Arizona, and still shocks the conscience of all fair-minded people.” The MCRC issued a similar resolution in 2011 condemning the SBA’s disciplinary action against Thomas.

DHS Issues New Waivers To Expedite New Border Wall Construction In Arizona

Three new waivers have been issued by the Department of Homeland Security for border wall construction that should expedite construction of approximately 36 miles of new border wall in Arizona and New Mexico.

These waivers are in addition to the waiver that was signed by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Noem and published in the Federal Register in April 2025 for border wall construction in California.

The Secretary’s waiver authority allows DHS to waive environmental laws–including the National Environmental Policy Act–to ensure the expeditious construction of physical barriers and roads, by minimizing the risk of administrative delays.

The waivers cover projects funded through U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Fiscal Year 2020 and 2021 appropriations. These projects include:

A private lunar lander from Japan crashed while attempting a touchdown Friday, the latest casualty in the commercial rush to the moon.

The Tokyo-based company ispace declared the mission a failure several hours after communication was lost with the lander. Flight controllers scrambled to gain contact, but were met with only silence and said they were concluding the mission.

Communications ceased less than two minutes before the spacecraft's scheduled landing on the moon with a mini rover. Until then, the descent from lunar orbit seemed to be going well.

CEO and founder Takeshi Hakamada apologized to everyone who contributed to the mission, the second lunar strikeout for ispace.

Shari Redstone Confirms Cancer Diagnosis While Facing Trump’s ‘60 Minutes’ Suit

Ms. Redstone, who is trying to close the sale of her family’s Paramount media empire to Skydance, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer this spring.

Shari Redstone, the chair and controlling shareholder of Paramount Global, is confronting a personal health crisis as she navigates a high-profile battle over the future of her media empire and a lawsuit filed by President Trump against her news division at CBS.

Ms. Redstone, 71, was recently diagnosed with thyroid cancer and underwent surgery last month, she acknowledged in an interview after The New York Times asked about her condition.

“Shari Redstone was diagnosed with thyroid cancer earlier this spring,” said Molly Morse, a spokeswoman for Ms. Redstone.

The diagnosis adds a new layer of complexity to the legal and political quagmire that Ms. Redstone and her company, which controls television stations, streaming platforms and a movie studio, have been struggling to navigate.

Ms. Redstone said she sought medical attention about two months ago after experiencing fatigue and other symptoms. She received the diagnosis the next day. Surgeons removed her thyroid gland but were unable to remove all of the cancer cells because they had spread to her vocal cords.

Ms. Redstone continues to be treated with radiation, and “she and her family are grateful that her prognosis is excellent,” Ms. Morse said. “While it has been a challenging period, she is maintaining all professional and philanthropic activities throughout her treatment, which is ongoing.” She was recently involved in the selection of three new Paramount board members.

Knowledge of Ms. Redstone’s condition was confined to a close circle of family members, friends and advisers. Ms. Redstone also shared the news with David Ellison, the tech heir who runs Skydance, which has agreed to acquire Paramount and the Redstone family’s stake.

Skydance, backed by Mr. Ellison’s father, Larry, struck a multibillion-dollar deal to acquire Paramount last year after months of on-again-off-again negotiations. The two companies said the deal would infuse Paramount’s traditional TV and movie businesses with new technological expertise. But the deal has languished, with approval by the Federal Communications Commission a major hurdle.

A significant complication arose in October when Mr. Trump sued CBS News and “60 Minutes,” accusing the popular news program of deceptively editing an interview with his Democratic opponent in the presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris. Mr. Trump has denounced “60 Minutes” as “fraudulent” and said CBS “should pay a big price.”

Many legal experts have called the lawsuit baseless, and news networks routinely edit interviews before airing them. But the F.C.C. has not yet signed off on the Skydance deal, and some Paramount executives believe that a settlement with Mr. Trump would facilitate the agency’s approval. (Brendan Carr, the chairman of the F.C.C., has said the lawsuit is unrelated to the approval process; Paramount has also said the two are not connected.)

Lawyers for Paramount and Mr. Trump have been locked in settlement talks for months. While the sides have inched closer to an agreement, no settlement appears imminent, two people with knowledge of the talks said. The president has been seeking more than $25 million, and Paramount recently signaled that it would pay $15 million. The two sides are consulting regularly with a mediator.

The prolonged negotiations have frustrated executives at Paramount and Skydance, and they have held discussions about the possibility that a settlement may not be reached. Some have discussed the possibility that their merger could fall apart. Mr. Trump’s team has threatened to file an additional lawsuit, over a “60 Minutes” segment in May about the president’s executive orders that targeted law firms.

A lawyer for Mr. Trump did not respond to a request for comment.

The unease over the lawsuit has led executives at Paramount and CBS to apply more scrutiny to segments on “60 Minutes” that could be construed as critical of the Trump administration. CBS News has not killed a story because of the pressure, but the executive producer of “60 Minutes,” Bill Owens, resigned in April, saying he “would not be allowed” to make independent journalistic decisions.

Last month, CBS forced out the news division’s president, Wendy McMahon, who said in a memo that “the company and I do not agree on the path forward.”

Ms. Redstone previously recused herself from her board’s discussions of how to handle the Trump suit, given that her financial stake in the pending Skydance deal is so much greater than the stakes of other shareholders, whose interests the directors are expected to represent.

Even before her cancer diagnosis, though, she told board members that she wanted the company to explore a settlement with Mr. Trump. Ms. Redstone has said she wants to avoid a protracted legal war with the president that could cost hundreds of millions of dollars and jeopardize other divisions that have business before the government, two people familiar with her thinking said.

CBS journalists believe the reputation of “60 Minutes” is at stake. And senators like Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Bernie Sanders of Vermont have warned that any payment by Paramount to Mr. Trump could be construed as a bribe and would potentially set off a congressional hearing.

“Politicians and presidents can’t go suing people over stories they do not like,” Mr. Sanders said in a recent interview. “That is not what this country is supposed to be about.”

The prospect of being accused of bribery, and perhaps facing legal action because of it, has vexed Paramount’s directors, who must weigh the corporate benefits of a settlement against the perception that they are greenlighting a deal to secure an unrelated merger.

Meanwhile, the makeup of the Paramount board is changing. The company said this week that Judith McHale, a long-serving director, would not stand for re-election and that it was nominating three new directors: Mary Boies, counsel to the law firm Boies Schiller Flexner; Charles E. Ryan, a co-founder of Almaz Capital; and Roanne Sragow Licht, an adjunct professor at Boston University.

Ms. Redstone also harbors her own concerns about the editorial judgment of CBS News. She has acknowledged being troubled by some of her network’s news coverage, and on occasion has raised those concerns publicly and spoken to corporate leadership.

Ms. Redstone has told people that her priorities remain her family and philanthropy, and that the business issues related to CBS and Paramount pale in significance to her recent diagnosis. While she closely monitors developments at Paramount and remains eager to see a deal with Skydance completed, she continues to be occupied with medical consultations and treatment.

Signs of a truce are emerging in the increasingly bitter clash between two of the world’s most powerful men.

President Donald Trump projected an air of nonchalance in an interview Thursday with POLITICO during a day of sparring over social media with Elon Musk.

Separately, White House aides, after working to persuade the president to temper his public criticism of Musk to avoid escalation, scheduled a call Friday with the billionaire CEO of Tesla to broker a peace.

“Oh it’s okay,” Trump told POLITICO in a brief telephone call when asked about the very public breakup with his onetime megabacker. “It’s going very well, never done better.” Trump went on to tout his favorability ratings saying, “The numbers are through the roof, the highest polls I’ve ever had and I have to go.”

It was a marked contrast to what appeared for all the world to be an ugly online feud between Trump and Musk over his “big beautiful bill,” the legislation now in the Senate that incorporates his presidential agenda, from tax cuts to immigration enforcement.

The stakes were high enough, and the exchanges so alarmingly bitter, that aides and allies, including hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, rushed to ease the tension — and Musk seemed agreeable.

“I support @realDonaldTrump and @elonmusk and they should make peace for the benefit of our great country,” Ackman wrote on X.

Musk responded, “You’re not wrong.”

Earlier Thursday — as Musk raged about the cost of legislation that is projected to add $2.4 trillion to the deficit — Trump tempered some of his commentary on his own social media platform at the urging of White House aides.

The aides advised him to focus on the bill and getting it through the Senate instead of the conflict with Musk, according to one person close to the White House whowas granted anonymity to discuss private exchanges.

One of Trump’s Truth Social posts reflected that restraint. “I don’t mind Elon turning against me, but he should have done so months ago,” the president wrote. This is one of the Greatest Bills ever presented to Congress,” he added, before focusing on its benefits and signing off, “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

(The real story it was not only the EV credits Musk was upset about, I think he thought he could have power over Congress by being close to Trump and have influence over his Admin. He doesn’t understand the hierarchy and how there cannot be a seeming conflict of interest. Do you remember Trump said in his first term “Elon was constantly coming to the WH to get approval for more deals”. Future interactions need to have a distance for objectivity.)
