U.S. Space Force Rapid Capabilities Office selects companies for tech accelerator

The U.S. Space Force’s Space Rapid Capabilities Office (Space RCO) announced Jan. 29 it selected 10 companies to participate in its inaugural Prime Fusion Pilot Accelerator Program, an initiative aimed at fast-tracking technologies to protect military satellites from orbital threats.

The program, run in partnership with defense contractor FedTech, is designed to identify emerging space technologies that could enhance the safety of satellites in orbit.

Space RCO, headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, focuses on the rapid acquisition and delivery of critical space systems.

The accelerator will focus on satellite defense technologies, including onboard satellite sensors, anomaly detection software, and ground-based tracking systems to monitor and report potential threats such as space debris and adversarial activity.

“The goal is to seamlessly integrate new and innovative technologies into satellites offered by prime integrators, creating adaptable space assets with built-in awareness,” the Space RCO said in a statement on Jan. 29.

The Space RCO, established by Congress in 2018, serves as a specialized unit within the Space Force dedicated to the expedited development and deployment of space capabilities.

Companies team up

The accelerator’s first cohort consists of five two-company teams, each bringing specialized expertise in satellite technology and situational awareness:

Active Vigilance – Turion Space: Active Vigilance specializes in automated onboard anomaly detection. Turion Space develops spacecraft capable of docking and maneuvering.

Digantara – Anduril: India-based Digantara is focused on space situational awareness, using a network of nanosatellites and a cloud-based analytics platform to track and assess space debris.

Anduril Industries, a U.S. defense technology firm, is known for integrating artificial intelligence into defense systems.

Geost – Impulse Space: Geost manufactures space domain awareness payloads that track and identify objects in space. Impulse Space specializes in in-space transportation.

Raptor Dynamix – True Anomaly: Raptor Dynamix, a defense contractor leveraging AI for geospatial intelligence, teams up with True Anomaly, which develops spacecraft designed for military orbital operations and space domain awareness.

TRL11 – BlackVe: TRL11 is working to bring full-motion video capabilities to space for applications like satellite docking and debris removal. BlackVe focuses on developing spacecraft technologies for military applications.

The accelerator will culminate in a March 2025 pitch event in Albuquerque, where teams will present their solutions to Space RCO leadership and industry representatives.

Air Force Conducts More Deportation Flights with Armed Security Forces ‘Ravens’

The U.S. Air Force carried out deportation flights to Ecuador and Guatemala earlier this week, U.S. officials told Air & Space Forces Magazine, as the Pentagon continues to fly migrants out of the country at the direction of President Donald Trump.

On Jan. 28, a U.S. Air Force C-17 carrying detained migrants took off from Biggs Army Airfield in El Paso, Texas. It landed in Ecuador later that evening.

A C-17 transporting a deportation flight also took off from El Paso on Jan. 27 for Guatemala, the third such flight to the country.

The flight to Ecuador has not been previously reported, and neither flight has been officially announced.

Those C-17 flights follow a high-profile spat with Colombia, which turned away two C-17s on Jan. 26. Colombia later relented in the face of pressure from the Trump administration and sent its own air force planes to transport the deportees.

U.S. aircrews participating in the deportation missions have included armed Air Force Security Forces personnel, known as Phoenix Ravens, defense officials told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

A photo released by the Department of Defense of the inside of a C-17 deporting migrants on a flight out of Tucson International Airport, Ariz., shows at least two U.S. service members carrying what appear to be M4 rifles.

“We can confirm the C-17 aircrews conducting deportation flights include RAVENS, who are specially trained Security Forces personnel dedicated to providing force protection for Mobility Air Force aircraft transiting through austere locations with potentially high terrorist and criminal threat levels,” a defense official told Air & Space Forces Magazine.

“These personnel are strictly responsible for the security of the aircrew and aircraft and they do not engage in interdiction or law enforcement activities.”

In-flight law enforcement on the deportation flights is the responsibility of Department of Homeland Security personnel, officials said.

From the outset of the Pentagon’s effort to rush 1,500 troops to the border and transport migrants, which it first announced Jan. 22, defense officials have said U.S. military personnel are not carrying out law enforcement activities.

U.S. troops are prohibited from performing law enforcement duties under the Posse Comitatus Act.

Trump said in an executive order that the use of the U.S. military is justified because he has declared a border emergency to stop “forms of invasion including unlawful mass migration, narcotics trafficking, human smuggling and trafficking, and other criminal activities.”

The border deployments have included U.S. military police, who were transported on USAF aircraft. The military’s role may expand in the days ahead, the Trump administration indicated Jan. 29.

Trump directed the Pentagon and Department of Homeland Security to “take all appropriate actions to expand the Migrant Operations Center at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to full capacity to provide additional detention space for high-priority criminal aliens unlawfully present in the United States,” according to a memo issued by the White House.

“We’re ramping up for the possibility to expand mass deportations because President Trump is dead serious about getting illegal criminals out of our country,” Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Fox News.

Five flights at Auckland Airport were briefly delayed this morning after reports of a drone straying into the airport’s controlled airspace.

An Airways New Zealand spokesperson said at 10am, Auckland Air Traffic Control received a public report of a drone near Ormiston, inside Auckland Airport’s control zone.

“As a precaution, five flights were held for approximately five minutes while air traffic control assessed the situation. In line with procedure, police were notified.

“The airport’s control zone includes areas where aircraft fly at lower altitudes during take-off and landing. Drone operators need approval from air traffic control to be able to fly in this airspace.

“Drone users should check airshare.co.nz to find out where they can fly safely and to log their flight with air traffic control if needed.”

It comes more than three weeks after a drone hovered close to the top of Auckland’s Sky Tower to capture the spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks footage.

A Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) spokesperson said the authority had received multiple reports regarding drone footage taken in Auckland on December 31.

“Civil Aviation Rules prohibit flying over people or property without consent, at night, within 4km of an aerodrome, or higher than 120m from the ground.”

The footage, shot at night, shows New Year’s Eve in Auckland’s CBD from above and flies over multiple properties and appears to be higher than 120m.

“If a drone operator is certificated under Civil Aviation Rule part 102 some of these restrictions may not apply,” the spokesperson said.

People called out the drone operator online, questioning whether they had official clearance to fly in the area.

“How did anyone get permission to fly over all those people, fly within four Kms of two heliports, and at night?” one Reddit user said.

“If this person doesn’t have full certification and part 102 he needs to be talking to a lawyer.”

“Of all the dangerous illegal things you can do with a drone this was spectacular,” another said.

“What an idiot, multiple flights on his channel illegally flying around Auckland. Filed a report with the CAA, good luck to him.”

After months of speculation surrounding mysterious drone sightings over New Jersey, the White House disclosed this week that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had, in fact, authorized the flights as part of a research program.

The first question that could have been asked by journalists in the White House press corps would start with two words.

“What the —”

The second question would be whether the entire leadership of the FAA was off on a two-month spelunking retreat deep inside the bowels of the earth and thus didn’t know about these mystery drone swarms.

What’s the deal?

Since late November, residents across New Jersey have reported seeing unidentified drones in the skies, prompting widespread media coverage and speculation.

Former Gov. Chris Christie said one flew over his home, while NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers claimed a drone passed over his car.

Hundreds of photos and videos surfaced on social media, fueling concerns and leading Congress to demand answers. The FBI launched an investigation but initially admitted that the drones’ origins were uncertain.

“We just don’t know, and that’s the concerning part,” said Robert Wheeler Jr., Assistant Director of the FBI’s critical incident response group.

According to the White House, the FAA suddenly remembered that it had authorized flights of research drones. How many are there, and over what area? The FAA website doesn’t say.

In December, the FAA signed a joint statement with the FBI and the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security, saying that it was dispatching advanced detection technology and trained observers to help investigate the drone mystery.

The FAA had also ordered flight restrictions on drones over much of New Jersey.

But it didn’t fess up.

The situation escalated in December when drones reportedly breached restricted airspace over a nuclear facility in New Jersey and multiple military installations along the East Coast.

Similar incursions were documented at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, which resulted in a temporary shutdown.

Around the same period, formations of unidentified drones entered highly restricted airspace over four major U.S. Air Force bases in the United Kingdom.

Media reports indicate that the U.S. deployed its most advanced counter-drone technology but failed to neutralize or track the intruders.

Additionally, a year prior, Langley Air Force Base in Virginia experienced a series of 17 consecutive nightly drone intrusions.

Officials acknowledged they deployed their best counter-drone technology, but it was ineffective against the unknown aircraft.

Theories about the origins of the drones have ranged from foreign adversaries—such as China, Russia, or Iran—to unknown private entities.

Exasperated officials in New Jersey didn’t buy those theories back in December and might not swallow this one, either.

It seems like the FAA should be able to answer some pretty basic questions. For instance, when did it authorize the unknown research drones? How many of them were authorized?

Over what period of time were they authorized? Why didn’t it come clean when so many agencies, including the FAA itself, were trying to figure this out?

A former senior advisor to former President Barack Obama has been sentenced to 11 and a half years in prison for child sex crimes. Rahamim ‘Rami’ Shy traveled to the United Kingdom in an attempt to meet a nine-year-old for sex. He was initially arrested last year.

Shy coordinated the U.S. government’s response to terror groups like the Taliban and Al Qaeda and was sentenced at Luton Crown Court on Wednesday, January 29. Upon his arrest, Shy was found with children’s toys and condoms in his luggage. The nine-year-old he thought he was talking to was, in reality, an undercover police officer. He spoke with the officer online and stated that the child’s age was a “tad late” to begin the sexual activity.

Shy was also found in possession of indecent images of children on his cell phone. Messages showing his sexual interest in children were also discovered. Meanwhile, Shy’s attorneys attempted to claim that the court did not have jurisdiction because the messages were sent in the United States, but the judge overruled this.

The former Obama official is just the latest leftist to be arrested or convicted of child sex offenses in Britain. Among Britain’s ruling leftist Labour Party, over 50 members, including elected officials, have been arrested for child sex offenses, from possession of child pornography to rape.

Earlier this month, another Democrat was arrested for attempting to meet a child for sex in Las Vegas. Matthew A. Inman, treasurer for the Orange County, Florida Democrats, attempted to meet the father of a nine-year-old to meet for sexual purposes. As in the British case, the “father” was an undercover police officer.

MAHA, in essence, granted the Trump campaign a tinge of populist legitimacy among Covid era dissidents, which grew out of the shuttering of RFK Jr.’s independent presidential run.

Specifically, he advocates reforming the FDA to deregulate and accelerate the pathway from drug development to legalization. This would notably aid the biotech industry, which has long struggled to get its products approved outside of an “emergency”-based deregulatory paradigm.

When considering the investments and board positions that O’Neill himself has made and held in biotechnology companies, this would likely include mRNA products that Kennedy and other MAHA influencers have spent years criticizing since the Covid-19 pandemic — a clear contradiction between O’Neill’s views on public health, and those which the MAGA base were sold on the campaign trail.

Perhaps standing in even starker contrast with MAHA principles, O’Neill currently sits on the board of a company that is currently pursuing the development of a neurotoxic substance as a “therapeutic” treatment for people with Alzheimer’s disease (a neurodegenerative disease). Ironically, that same substance has long been flagged by Kennedy and the organization he co-founded, Children’s Health Defense, as one of the main causative agents in their hypothesis for a vaccine-autism link and other chronic conditions suffered by many Americans, particularly children.

Nigel Farage has launched a campaign to “let the people vote” and claimed other parties are “terrified” of Reform as up to 18 councils could cancel May elections.

The Government has invited authorities to apply for this year’s local elections to be scrapped and is currently considering their responses.

Reform has launched a petition calling the decision a “disgrace” and has projected a hard-hitting message onto the side of the House of Commons with the slogan “Dictators Cancel Elections”.

“It shows how rotten the whole system is now in British politics.”

Reform’s “Let the People Vote” petition says: “I demand that the English County Council elections go ahead in full on May 1st.”

Councils known to have asked for May’s elections to be delayed include Derbyshire, Devon, East Sussex, West Sussex, Essex, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Oxfordshire. Suffolk, Surrey, Warwickshire and Worcestershire, all county councils, as well as Thurrock and the Isle of Wight.

Thursday’s confirmation hearings

10 a.m. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Health and Human Services

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will have the second of two confirmation hearings for his Health and Human Services Secretary nomination. He will appear before the Health Committee a day after his hearing before the Finance Committee.

The Associated Press reported that at Wednesday’s Senate Finance Committee, it was Republican Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who challenged Kennedy the most.

When asking him to detail his plans for Medicare and Medicaid, Kennedy responded with few answers and misstated some basic facts about how the federally funded programs work and how many people they serve.

Cassidy’s vote is crucial for Kennedy since he also serves on the finance committee that will decide whether the health secretary nominee makes it to the Senate floor.

10 a.m. Tulsi Gabbard, Office of the Director of National Intelligence

Tulsi Gabbard, President Donald Trump’s pick to be director of national intelligence, is expected to face questions from the Senate Intelligence Committee over past comments about Russia and a 2017 visit with Syria’s now-deposed leader, the Associated Press reported.

Gabbard unsuccessfully sought the 2020 presidential nomination and left the party in 2022. Gabbard endorsed Trump in August and campaigned often with him. She served in the Army National Guard for more than two decades and was deployed to Iraq and Kuwait.

9:30 a.m. Kash Patel, FBI

Kash Patel was selected by Trump to lead the FBI and may face questions from Democratic senators Thursday about his loyalty to Trump and stated desire to overhaul the bureau.

How do confirmation hearings work?

The backstory:

Once President Donald Trump nominates his picks for various positions, they are then presented to the appropriate Senate committee. The committee would then vote to recommend a candidate to the full Senate. The full Senate will debate. Trump's picks will either be confirmed or rejected by a simple majority. If they are approved, they are then sworn in.

Republicans currently hold 53 seats in the Senate, which could suggest many of Trump's picks will be confirmed without issue.

DC plane crash could have been prevented – Trump

The US president has suggested the tragedy was caused by human error

The collision of a US Army helicopter and a civilian airliner that killed 67 people could have been prevented, President Donald Trump has claimed,questioning air traffic controllers’ actions.

The H-60 BlackHawk helicopter collided Flight 5342 that was on its final approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday evening.

Rescue teams have not recovered any survivors from the US capital’s freezing Potomac river, which flows adjacent to the airport.

“It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn,”Trump posted on his TruthSocial platform early on Thursday.

The president also questioned why the control tower had failed to instruct the helicopter crew what to do.

“This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!” Trump added.

At 9pm local time, when the crash happened, the airport reported clear skies, with 16km visibility and winds from the northwest. The air temperature was 10C, but parts of the Potomac River were still frozen from an earlier cold snap.

The passenger jet was a Bombardier CRJ700 operated by PSA, a subsidiary of American Airlines. The flight from Wichita, Kansas was on landing approach to Runway 33, with 60 passengers and four crew members on board, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said.

Among the passengers were several athletes, coaches and family members returning from the US Figure Skating Championships in Wichita.

Nearly 300 first responders were deployed to sift the wreckage for survivors, but found none as of Thursday morning. Operations were soon shifted from rescue to recovery.

President Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff met on Tuesday in Riyadh with a senior adviser to Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, according to two sources with knowledge of the meeting.

The meeting between Witkoff and Hussein al-Sheikh took place amid efforts by the Trump administration to end the war in Gaza and push for a Saudi-Israeli peace deal that includes a path toward a Palestinian state.

Behind the scenes: The sources said the meeting was the result of several weeks of back-channel talks between Trump administration officials and Palestinian leadership.

According to one source, Saudi Arabia helped broker the meeting, which took place in its capital.

The big picture: Relations between the U.S. and the Palestinian Authority were mostly frozen during the first Trump presidency because of his decision to move the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

During the 2024 campaign, the Palestinian president sought to reconcile with Trump and sent him a letter of support after his first assassination attempt. Trump's response was positive.

Several days after Trump won the election, he spoke on the phone with Abbas. Palestinian officials said the call was very positive, and that Trump reiterated his aspiration to broker peace in the Middle East as part of a broader deal with Saudi Arabia.

State of play: Witkoff travelled to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a U.S. official said.

On Wednesday, Witkoff will visit Israel and meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials.

He is also expected to visit the Gaza strip — the first such visit by a U.S. government official in almost 20 years.

Last month the de facto leader of Syria, Abu Mohammad al-Jolani (aka Ahmad al-Sharaa), told Al Arabiya TV that it would take up to four years in hold new elections after Assad was ousted and fled the country on Dec. 8. This obviously undemocratic pronouncement was met with silence among Western leaders, who had long supported the anti-Assad 'revolution' and regime change efforts.

In a 'victory' speech given Wednesday night, Jolani declared himself president of Syria, claiming that this would be for an unspecified transitional period. "We announce the appointment of Commander Ahmad al-Sharaa as head of state during the transitional period. He will assume the duties of the president of the Syrian Arab Republic and represent the country in international forums," a statement said.

"The president is authorized to form a temporary legislative council for the transitional phase, which will carry out its duties until a permanent constitution is enacted and put into effect," the announcement added.

The statement further confirmed the cancellation of Syria's 2012 constitution and the dissolution of the former government's parliament, the army, as well as security agencies, state SANA noted. Additionally all armed factions which previously fought Assad and the Syrian army have been declared dissolved and will be integrated into state institutions.

Western mainstream media spent years whitewashing the hardline Islamist-led regime change war, as it was also backed by US intelligence, NATO allies, and the Gulf states. Al-Qaeda linked militants were presented all along as somehow being enlightened Jeffersonian Democrats.

Yet CNN admits that Jolani/Sharaa himself - Syria's new self-appointed president - is a foreign fighter with clear past links to ISIS:

Al-Sharaa became a Syrian “foreign fighter” in his early 20s, crossing into Iraq to fight the Americans when they invaded the country in the spring of 2003. That eventually landed him in the notorious US-run Iraqi prison, Camp Bucca, which became a key recruiting ground for terrorist groups, including what would become ISIS.

Freed from Camp Bucca, he crossed back into Syria and started fighting against the Baathist Assad regime, doing so with the backing of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who would later become the founder of ISIS.

In Syria, he founded a militant group known as Jabhat al-Nusra (“the Victory Front” in English), which pledged allegiance to al Qaeda, but in 2016, he broke away from the terror group, according to the US Center for Naval Analyses.

We Need a Reckoning on the 1619 Project.

The New York Times launched its torpedo at American history on August 18, 2019. I speak, of course, of “The 1619 Project,” which first emerged as a special edition of the newspaper’s Sunday magazine. In the ensuing five years and five months, the 1619 Project outgrew its original 100 pages of newsprint. It became a somber 50 second television commercial on February 9, 2020, that aired during the Academy Awards and featured the singer, songwriter, and actress Janelle Monáe. In 2021, it ballooned into a 590-page hardback book, supertitled “A New Origin Story.” In 2023, Hulu turned it into a six-part “docuseries” with Oprah Winfrey as executive producer.

During those five-plus years, the New York Times ran thousands of print advertisements for the “project.” It substantively revised the magazine text without any public acknowledgment, which means unless you saved the original copy, you can’t know exactly what it said.

Like all revolutionary movements, the destructive Left cannot achieve its goals without convincing enough people that the old order is so evil it can only be destroyed. This is the purpose served by Critical Race Theory and, more specifically, by the New York Times’ 1619 Project, which cast slavery as the foundational principle of the United States. The project’s educational component has been hugely influential but, as Peter Wood points out, the actual numbers on its reach are unclear and even conflicting. Wood argues that a clear accounting of the propaganda’s reach in American schools will be a necessary, if difficult, step in any course correction.

Vitaly Klitschko has claimed that the administration of the Ukrainian leader is meddling in the capital’s local governance, endangering democracy

Kiev Mayor Vitaly Klitschko has accused the Ukrainian government of attempting to undermine the city’s leadership, claiming that Vladimir Zelensky’s administration is interfering in local governance.

In a video address on Wednesday, Klitschko, who has a strained relationship with Zelensky, warned ofongoing “political intrigues” in the capital, allegedly orchestrated by the Ukrainian leader’s allies.

Klitschko’s criticism follows the appointment in December of Timur Tkachenko as head of the Kiev City Military Administration.

Tkachenko, previously a deputy minister for community and territorial development, replaced Sergey Popko, a military officer who had led the administration since 2022. Klitschko has challenged the move,arguing that Tkachenko lacks military experienceand is unqualified for the position.

Tkachenko has been obstructing key economic decisions in Kievin a bid to take over the powers of the mayor and the city council, Klitschko claimed.

A Ukrainian defense manufacturer has suggested dispersing military production across civilian sites, including to school facilities, to protect its weapons-making operations from Russian strikes. Aleksey Polonchuk proposed thatstudents assemble drones in school workshopsas part of a decentralized production strategy.

Polonchuk, who owns a defense company specializing in electronic warfare equipment, made his remarks in an interview with Dignitas Fund, a nonprofit focused on raising funds for Kiev’s military. The interview was published on theNGO’s YouTube channel on Wednesday.

To safeguard drone production from Russian long-range attacks, Polonchuk emphasized the need to scatter manufacturing locations across the country.

“Production should be distributed across the country, hidden in basements–and thus scaled up.Assemble FPV drones of approved designs during labor lessons in schools. The whole country assembles what works, what is approved,” he stated.

According to Polonchuk,this decentralized approachwould protect drone manufacturing from detection and destruction. He warned that large-scale production sites are vulnerable because “if you build a workshop where 60 drones are simultaneously produced, it will quickly be hit.”

A decades-old U.S. government ban on federally licensed firearms dealers selling handguns to adults under the age of 21 is unconstitutional, a U.S. appeals court held on Thursday, citing recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings expanding gun rights.

The ruling by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals marked the first time a federal appeals court has held that the prohibition violated the right to keep and bear arms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment.

The appeals court had previously upheld that same ban in 2012. But that was before the 6-3 conservative majority U.S. Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling in 2022 that established a new test for assessing modern firearms laws.

In New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, the Supreme Court held that modern gun restrictions were required to be "consistent with this nation's historical tradition of firearm regulation."

The federal ban on sales to people under 21 was first adopted by Congress in 1968 as part of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act.

A group of individuals between the ages of 18 and 20 along with the gun rights groups the Firearms Policy Coalition and the Second Amendment Foundation challenged the ban in 2020 and was appealing a lower-court judge's decision upholding the statutes.

U.S. Circuit Judge Edith Jones, writing for Thursday's three-judge panel, said that decision was wrong, as the statutes were "unconstitutional in light of our Nation's historic tradition of firearm regulation."

The U.S. Department of Justice during Democratic former President Joe Biden's tenure had defended the ban. But Jones said it put forth "scant" evidence to show that the gun rights of adults ages 18 to 20 were similarly restricted during the nation's founding era in the 1700s.

"Ultimately, the text of the Second Amendment includes eighteen-to-twenty-year-old individuals among “the people” whose right to keep and bear arms is protected," wrote Jones, who like the other panel members was appointed by a Republican president.

Brandon Combs, the Firearms Policy Coalition's president, in a statement called the ruling a victory against "an immoral and unconstitutional age-based gun ban."

The Justice Department did not respond to a request for comment.

Three wildfires have erupted near North Carolina towns heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene last year.

The first, the Crooked Creek Fire, began in McDowell County on Wednesday, burning nearly 250 acres and remaining 55% contained.

The second, the North Fork Fire, ignited hours later, burning 60 acres and is currently 0% contained.

The McDowell County Emergency Services stated, “Local fire departments are on scene and working in coordination with the U.S. Forest Service to provide structure protection and monitor fire behavior.”

“Emergency personnel will continue to remain on-site throughout the day to monitor the situation and ensure further containment of the fire,” fire officials added.

Slovakian authorities will expel the individual, according to a police statement cited by media

A Ukrainian national has been arrested in Slovakia in connection with a coup threat, local media reported on Thursday, citing a police statement. The man, who has not been named, will be expelled from Slovakia and returned to Ukraine.

The move comes after Slovak Prime Minister RobertFico, who has refused to follow NATO and EU policyon the Ukraine conflict and survived an assassination attempt by a pro-Kiev activist last year, linked recent anti-government protests in his country to interference by Ukrainians.

Last week,up to 100,000 people took to the streets of Bratislavaand other cities in protest at what they claim is Fico’s perceived alignment with Russia.

“Currently, one person is at the border aliens police office, where administrative expulsion is being carried out,” police chief Jana Maskarova told Dennik N newspaper, adding that theUkrainian nationalwill be placedon the country’s blacklist.

On Wednesday, Erik Kalinak, head of the advisory council to Prime Minister Fico, alleged alink between recent anti-government protests in Slovakia and a military unit of foreign nationals fighting for Ukraineagainst Russia known as the Georgian Legion.

In a post on X on Thursday, the Legion rejected the “baseless and absurd accusations made by the Slovak authorities.”

The accusation came weeks after Kiev blocked the flow of Russian gas through its network to Slovakia and amid heightened diplomatic tensions between the two neighbors. Speaking on Tuesday, Fico proclaimed: “Our enemy is Zelensky. Zelensky caused the problems we have. I don’t like him because he harms Slovakia.”

Last Tuesday the prime minister, citing a report by the Slovak Information Service (SIS) intelligence agency, claimed that the country’spolitical opposition was preparing a coupin the country – akin to the one that took place in Kiev back in 2014. He also alleged that “there is a group of experts on the territory of the Slovak Republic that had actively operated in Georgia and during the Maidan in Ukraine.”
