Seamus Bruner, the Director of Research at the Government Accountability Institute, joined the First Things podcast to discuss his new book ‘Controligarchs: Exposing the Billionaire Class, their Secret Deals, and the Globalist Plot to Dominate Your Life’.

Oligarchs are typically extremely wealthy people with a close relationship with the government. Recently we’ve heard the term “Big Tech oligarchs” referring to the wealthiest in Silicon Valley, Bruner explained.

What makes Controligarchs different from oligarchs is that they really do want to control every aspect of our lives.

“These people have like a god complex but on steroids,” Bruner said.

Controligarchs are Depopulationists

The inaugural meeting of the Good Club took place in 2009 at Rockefeller University in Manhattan, New York. The Good Club is the name given to the tiny global elite of billionaire “philanthropists.” Some of the members are familiar figures such as Bill Gates, George Soros, Warren Buffett, Oprah Winfrey, David Rockefeller and Ted Turner. But there are others, too, like business giants Eli and Edythe Broad, who are equally wealthy but less well known. All told, at the time its members were worth $125bn.

Biden’s Administration May Have Suppressed COVID Evidence Contradicting Chinese Claims 1/3

Below is my column in the Hill on recent disclosure that the Biden Administration may have withheld evidence contradicting the Chinese on the origins of COVID. Millions of Americans lost loved ones and would like to know who was responsible.It appears that our government and many experts were less motivated to find that answer.

Here is the column:

Imagine a world war that left more than seven million dead, hundreds of millions became ill, wrecked the global economy, and left a generation with lasting psychological and developmental injuries.

We have seen such wars in history. What is different in this circumstance, however, is that all of that happened, and yet, years later, we still have no agreement on the original cause or possible culprits behind a pandemic that ravaged the world.

Worse yet, many politicians, experts and journalists do not seem inclined to find the answers.

This is like fighting World War II and then shrugging off the question of what actually started it.

New questions are being raised over long-withheld evidence on the origins of COVID, informationthat contradicted the accounts of not just the Biden administration but also allies in academia and the media.

The Chinese first reported the outbreak in December 2019 and insisted that it came from a wet market in Wuhan — a natural or “zoonotic” transfer from bats sold at the market. Others were skeptical and pointed to the nearby Wuhan government virus lab, known to have conducted coronavirus studies with bats. This lab had a history of safety and contamination concerns.

The “lab-leak theory,” which was always the most obvious explanation, was further reinforced by scientists who saw evidence of possible manipulation of the virus’s genetic code, particularly the “spike protein” that enables the virus to enter the human body in a “gain of function” operation.

There was (and still is) a serious controversy over the origins of the virus,but any debate was quickly scuttled in favor of the natural theory.

The Chinese immediately moved to crush any speculation of a lab-leak. Wuhan scientists were gagged and the Chinese refused to allow international investigators access to them or the lab in question. The Chinese also used their considerable influence over the World Health Organization and other groups to dismiss or downplay the lab theory..

Now, a long-withheld military report has finally been released by the Trump administration. It appears to confirm what was once denied by the Biden administration: U.S. military service members contracted COVID-19-like symptoms after participating in the World Military Games in October 2019 in Wuhan.

That contradicts China’s timeline. It suggests a longer cover-up in that country, which allowed the virus to spread not only to the U.S. but to countries around the world. Other nations also reported that their military personnel had fallen ill after attending the same games, suggesting that the virus was not only spreading but already raging in the area at that time.

The most disturbing aspect of this report is not the alleged conduct of the Chinese government, but that of our own.

Rumors of U.S. military personnel coming down with the virus had long been out there. Republicans in Congress repeatedly asked the Biden administration about any report on the outbreak.

Then-Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby told The Washington Post in June 2021 that the military had “no knowledge” of COVID-19 infections among the troops participating in those games.

Even as the illness associated with the games became known, the Biden administration repeatedlyrefused to confirm the U.S. cases, and a 2022 report was withheld from both Congress and the public.

If true, the level of duplicity and dishonesty is shocking. In the U.S. alone, more than 1.2 million died and more than 111 million were made sick by this virus. Yet the Biden administration is accused of withholding this information from the world. Why?

This disclosure follows an equally troubling disclosure thatscientists in the Biden administration actually found support for the lab theory but were silenced by their superiors.

Last December, the Wall Street Journal released an alarming report on how these scientists supported the lab theory on the origin of the COVID-19 virus. Not only were the FBI and its top experts excluded from a critical briefing of Biden, butgovernment scientists were reportedly warned that they were “off the reservation” in supporting the lab theory.

Asscientists were being attacked publicly and blacklisted for supporting the lab theory, experts at both the FBI and the Energy Department found the lab theory credible. Although no theory could be proven conclusively, it was deemed a more likely scenario than the natural-origin theory. The CIA also found the lab theory credible.

What the public was hearing was entirely different.They were hearing the same narrative laid out by the Chinese government in December 2019.

The Chinese relied upon western scientists to form a mob against anyone raising the lab-leak theory as a possible explanation. Many were enlisted to sign letters or publish statements denouncing the idea.It became an article of faith — a required virtue signal among university scientists.

The western media were equally primed to quash the theory.

After President Trump embraced the lab theory, the Chinese had the perfect setup.The media was on a hair-trigger in opposition and denounced his comments as not only unfounded but also racist. MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace mocked Trump and others for spreading “conspiracy theories.” MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt insisted that “we know it’s been debunked that this virus was manmade or modified.”

MSNBC’sJoy Reid called the lab leak theory “debunked bunkum.” Over at CNN, reporter Drew Griffin criticized the “widely debunked” theory and host Fareed Zakaria told viewers that “the far right has now found its own virus conspiracy theory” in the lab leak.

The Washington Post was particularly dogmatic. After Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) raised the lab-leak theory, he was chastised for “repeat[ing] a fringe theory suggesting that the ongoing spread of a coronavirus is connected to research in the disease-ravaged epicenter of Wuhan, China.”

ThePost’s “fact checker” Glenn Kessler mocked Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) for entertaining the theory. “I fear @tedcruz missed the scientific animation in the video that shows how it is virtually impossible for this virus to jump from the lab,” he posted. “Or the many interviews with actual scientists. We deal in facts, and viewers can judge for themselves.”

Even in 2021 when countervailing evidence was surfacing, the unrelenting attacks continued.New York Times science and health reporter Apoorva Mandavilli urged journalists not to mention the “racist” lab theory.

Social media companies also enforced the narrative and, with the coordination of the Biden Administration, experts raising the lab theory were targeted, censored, and blacklisted.

It now appears that the COVID outbreak may have occurred months before the alleged wet market release— months that could have been used to contain the virus. Instead, China is accused of suppressing the news and allowing the virus to spread worldwide. Our military personnel alone went home from the Wuhan games to 25 states, potentially carrying it with them.

When information on these infections connected to the games was reported around the world,China even suggested that the U.S. used the games to release the weaponized virus.

In 2020, I wrote a column on why China seemed poised to avoid any liability for what might be the greatest act of negligence in history. The sheer size of the disaster somehow seemed to insulate China. As Joseph Stalin had once said, “a single death is a tragedy” and “a million deaths is a statistic.”

Try more than seven million, and you have a statistic that was not worth confronting the Chinese over. What was done was done.

Congress and the Trump administration are now working to reconstruct this record. There is much that we still do not know.However, the public has already paid dearly for the answers.We have more than a million questions, and not one of them is a statistic to those who loved them.

What happens when a star runs out of nuclear fuel? For stars like our Sun, the center condenses into a white dwarf while the outer atmosphere is expelled into space to appear as a planetary nebula. The expelled outer atmosphere of planetary nebula NGC 1514 appears to be a jumble of bubbles - when seen in visible light. But the view from the James Webb Space Telescope in infrared, as featured here, confirms a different story: in this light the nebula shows a distinct hourglass shape, which is interpreted as a cylinder seen along a diagonal. If you look closely at the center of the nebula, you can also see a bright central star that is part of a binary system. More observations might better reveal how this nebula is evolving and how the central stars are working together to produce the interesting cylinder and bubbles observed.

Gas and dust ejected by a dying star at the heart of NGC 1514 came into complete focus thanks to mid-infrared data from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope.

Its rings, which are only detected in infrared light, now look like “fuzzy” clumps arranged in tangled patterns, and a network of clearer holes close to the central stars shows where faster material punched through.

“Before Webb, we weren’t able to detect most of this material, let alone observe it so clearly,” said Mike Ressler, a researcher and project scientist for Webb’s MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument) at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in southern California.

He discovered the rings around NGC 1514 in 2010 when he examined the image from NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). “With MIRI’s data, we can now comprehensively examine the turbulent nature of this nebula,” he said.

This scene has been forming for at least 4,000 years — and will continue to change over many more millennia. At the center are two stars that appear as one in Webb’s observation, and are set off with brilliant diffraction spikes.

The stars follow a tight, elongated nine-year orbit and are draped in an arc of dust represented in orange.

One of these stars, which used to be several times more massive than our Sun, took the lead role in producing this scene.

“As it evolved, it puffed up, throwing off layers of gas and dust in in a very slow, dense stellar wind,” said David Jones, a senior scientist at the Institute of Astrophysics on the Canary Islands, who proved there is a binary star system at the center in 2017.

Once the star’s outer layers were expelled, only its hot, compact core remained. As a white dwarf star, its winds both sped up and weakened, which might have swept up material into thin shells.

Its Hourglass Shape

Webb’s observations show the nebula is tilted at a 60-degree angle, which makes it look like a can is being poured, but it’s far more likely that NGC 1514 takes the shape of an hourglass with the ends lopped off.

Look for hints of its pinched waist near top left and bottom right, where the dust is orange and drifts into shallow V-shapes.

What might explain these contours? “When this star was at its peak of losing material, the companion could have gotten very, very close,” Jones said.

“That interaction can lead to shapes that you wouldn’t expect. Instead of producing a sphere, this interaction might have formed these rings.”

The NASA Spinoff program was created over fifty years ago to facilitate the licensing and development of NASA's technologies for commercial use by other companies and agencies.

This program helps "spin off" NASA's technology for use by others here on Earth and, in some cases, in space.

To date, over 2,000 spinoff technologies have been documented by the NASA Spinoff program.

It is worth noting that there are a few technologies commonly thought to have been created by NASA that were actually independently developed.

Tang is a great example; it was developed by General Foods in 1957 and attained fame when used during food testing by NASA in the 60s (even though some astronauts were not fans of the powdery, not-quite-orange juice).

The microwave oven is another famous technology often falsely thought of as a NASA development.

It was, in fact, created shortly after World War 2, when radar technicians discovered that it wasn't such a good idea to stand in front of active equipment!

Thankfully, they found out via a melted candy bar and not from severe burns!

British Prime Minister Kier Starmer has removed scores of historical artworks from 10 Downing Street and replaced them with objectively awful drawings in the name of ‘diversity’.

The works Starmer ordered pulled down as part of the cultural purge include portraits of William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, William Ewart Gladstone, Margaret Thatcher, Sir Walter Raleigh, and past British monarchs including Elizabeth I.

The leftist leader has replaced paintings of those historical figures with what can only be described as ugly doodles by ‘modern artists’.

The Daily Mail reports:

Sir Keir Starmer was last night accused of being in thrall to ‘the wokerati’ after the full list of the paintings removed from No10 since he moved in was revealed.

Portraits of historic figures such as Elizabeth 1, Mary, Queen of Scots, Sir Walter Raleigh and William Shakespeare were among the 69 works of art ‘deinstalled’ from the Government Art Collection since the election.

The revelation comes after a long Freedom of Information battle with the Tories.

Among their replacements are Altar, a scene from the 2023 Falmouth Reggae Festival in Cornwall by Denzil Forrester.

Other paintings include All Things Being Equal, by the Nigerian abstract artist Nengi Omuku, which ’employs the human body as a medium to convey internal experiences’ by ‘using oil paint on strips of Sanyanan indigenous fabric from pre-colonial Nigeria‘.

Then there is Almond Clasp by the British-Ghanaian Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, who specialises in ‘brooding portraits of Black life’, and Still (III) by Christina Kimeze, who currently has an exhibition ‘inspired by the resurgence of roller skating in Black communities’.

10 Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister isn’t even open to the British public, so this move by Starmer isn’t even a virtue signalling stunt.

It’s presumably just because he can’t stand to be surrounded by British historical culture.Indeed, he described the Thatcher portrait as “unsettling” and remarked that he did not want to be stared down upon by a painting.

Just look at what was chosen as a replacement.

It looks like an 8 year old did it.

They’re laughing at us.

Almost half of the Republicans who identify as members of the Make America Great Again movement have said President Donald Trump can run for a third term in office despite being term-limited by the Constitution, according to a new poll.

A SurveyUSA poll of 2,491 registered voters found that 21 percent of all respondents said Trump was eligible for a third term in the White House, while 49 percent of MAGA-identifying Republicans said the same.

Why It Matters

Trump, who began his second term in January, has repeatedly suggested that he could run again in 2028. Though his comments are often made jokingly, he has said in recent weeks that he is not joking about pursuing a third term. If the president decides to run for another term, he may propose legal routes never before tested in U.S. history.

What To Know

The SurveyUSA poll, conducted between April 2 and April 6, found that 71 percent of respondents did not believe Trump was eligible to run for president again—including 91 percent of Democrats and 78 percent of independents.

Among Republicans, 45 percent believed the 78-year-old could not seek a third term in 2028, while 42 percent believed he could.

When broken down further, 49 percent of MAGA Republicans believed the president was eligible for a third term, compared to 36 percent who thought he was not.

Among non-MAGA Republicans, 64 percent said Trump was not eligible to run again, while 28 percent believed he was. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.1 percentage points.

The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution says, "No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."

In March, Trump told NBC's Kristen Welker he was "not joking" about considering a third term, adding that there were "methods which you could do it."

Trump said one such method could involve having Vice President JD Vance lead the Republican ticket in 2028, with Trump as his running mate. Vance could then resign once in office in 2029, allowing Trump to assume the presidency for a third time.

According to the 12th Amendment, anyone who is "constitutionally ineligible" to serve as president also cannot serve as vice president.

Steve Bannon, who hosts the War Room podcast and served as White House chief strategist during Trump's first term, has also suggested the president will win the 2028 election.

In an interview on Real Time With Bill Maher on April 11, Bannon said he had a "team of people" working on circumventing the 22nd Amendment, without specifying further. Bannon previously suggested the Constitution's wording would allow Trump to run again, as his two terms were not consecutive.

Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, introduced a joint resolution in January to amend the part of the Constitution that prevents a president from being elected more than twice.

The Promise of American Higher Education

Dear Members of the Harvard Community,

For three-quarters of a century, the federal government has awarded grants and contracts to Harvard and other universities to help pay for work that, along with investments by the universities themselves, has led to groundbreaking innovations across a wide range of medical, engineering, and scientific fields. These innovations have made countless people in our country and throughout the world healthier and safer. In recent weeks, the federal government has threatened its partnerships with several universities, including Harvard, over accusations of antisemitism on our campuses. These partnerships are among the most productive and beneficial in American history. New frontiers beckon us with the prospect of life-changing advances—from treatments for diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and diabetes, to breakthroughs in artificial intelligence, quantum science and engineering, and numerous other areas of possibility. For the government to retreat from these partnerships now risks not only the health and well-being of millions of individuals but also the economic security and vitality of our nation.

Late Friday night, the administration issued an updated and expanded list of demands, warning that Harvard must comply if we intend to “maintain [our] financial relationship with the federal government.” It makes clear that the intention is not to work with us to address antisemitism in a cooperative and constructive manner. Although some of the demands outlined by the government are aimed at combating antisemitism, the majority represent direct governmental regulation of the “intellectual conditions” at Harvard.

I encourage you to read the letter to gain a fuller understanding of the unprecedented demands being made by the federal government to control the Harvard community. They include requirements to “audit” the viewpoints of our student body, faculty, staff, and to “reduc[e] the power” of certain students, faculty, and administrators targeted because of their ideological views. We have informed the administration through our legal counsel that we will not accept their proposed agreement. The University will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights.

The administration’s prescription goes beyond the power of the federal government. It violates Harvard’s First Amendment rights and exceeds the statutory limits of the government’s authority under Title VI. And it threatens our values as a private institution devoted to the pursuit, production, and dissemination of knowledge. No government—regardless of which party is in power—should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.

Our motto—Veritas, or truth—guides us as we navigate the challenging path ahead. Seeking truth is a journey without end. It requires us to be open to new information and different perspectives, to subject our beliefs to ongoing scrutiny, and to be ready to change our minds. It compels us to take up the difficult work of acknowledging our flaws so that we might realize the full promise of the University, especially when that promise is threatened.

We have made it abundantly clear that we do not take lightly our moral duty to fight antisemitism. Over the past fifteen months, we have taken many steps to address antisemitism on our campus. We plan to do much more. As we defend Harvard, we will continue to:

nurture a thriving culture of open inquiry on our campus; develop the tools, skills, and practices needed to engage constructively with one another; and broaden the intellectual and viewpoint diversity within our community;

affirm the rights and responsibilities we share; respect free speech and dissent while also ensuring that protest occurs in a time, place, and manner that does not interfere with teaching, learning, and research; and enhance the consistency and fairness of disciplinary processes; and

work together to find ways, consistent with law, to foster and support a vibrant community that exemplifies, respects, and embraces difference. As we do, we will also continue to comply with Students For Fair Admissions v. Harvard, which ruled that Title VI of the Civil Rights Act makes it unlawful for universities to make decisions “on the basis of race.”

These ends will not be achieved by assertions of power, unmoored from the law, to control teaching and learning at Harvard and to dictate how we operate. The work of addressing our shortcomings, fulfilling our commitments, and embodying our values is ours to define and undertake as a community. Freedom of thought and inquiry, along with the government’s longstanding commitment to respect and protect it, has enabled universities to contribute in vital ways to a free society and to healthier, more prosperous lives for people everywhere. All of us share a stake in safeguarding that freedom. We proceed now, as always, with the conviction that the fearless and unfettered pursuit of truth liberates humanity—and with faith in the enduring promise that America’s colleges and universities hold for our country and our world.

The woman who launched a GoFundMe to help with her legal defense after she punched a pro-life journalist in the face has had her campaign taken down, according to an update from her Facebook page where she also accused the victim of organizing a mass campaign against her.

Two weeks ago, Savannah Craven, an anti-abortion activist who works with Students for Life and Live Action, was interviewing passersby when one woman who didn’t appreciate her questions, now identified as Brianna Rivers, punched her in the face and sent her to the hospital.

Rivers was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree assault. According to law firm Stephen Bilkis & Associates:

Assault in the second degree is a class D felony. The maximum possible sentence is 7 years in prison. Because assault in the second degree is also classified as a violent felony, the judge is required to impose a minimum sentence of 2 years in prison. For an assault in the second degree conviction in addition to being sentenced to at least 2 years in prison you may also be required to pay a fine of up to $5,000.

Rivers, who claimed she was “rage-baited” into the attack, denied responsibility and quickly launched a GoFundMe to help pay for her lawyers, raising almost $8700 towards her $25000 goal. However, GoFundMe suspended the campaign before it could finish, as it violated their terms of service of using the money to hire legal defense for violent crimes.

Rivers will not be able to keep the funds she has raised so far; instead, they will be refunded to givers. She has since pivoted to GiveSendGo, where the campaign has raised $592 at the time of publication.

In a post on Facebook, Rivers says she lost her job as a result of the assault, yet remains defiant as ever.

In yet another incredulous case, the British justice system has decided in its infinite wisdom that a Somali criminal will be allowed to stay in the UK because returning him to his home country would cause him too much “stress”.

Yes, really.

The Telegraph reports that a judge in the upper immigration tribunal ruled that the asylum seeker would suffer “stress” if deported to his homeland,which would worsen his mental health, thereby breaching article three of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), which protects against persecution and inhumane treatment.

The unnamed man,jailed for unspecified crimes, is a schizophrenic who hears voices, and has also been dependent on alcohol for almost twenty years, according to the report, another factor which led to him being allowed to stay in the country since arriving way back in 1999.

The Home Office has argued that the man,who has been granted anonymity, would be able to get medications he needs in his home country,but the judge still ruled against them.

The man is described as having a “high level of vulnerability” and “complex needs” with “the severity of his mental health problems closely linked to his stress levels and use of alcohol,” according to the tribunal.Lawyers assigned to the guy argued that he has “no real prospect” of returning to Mogadishu and making a living and that any financial support he would receive would be “limited”, and that he has a “history of being financially exploited”.

The Home Office has a program to offer financial support to foreign criminals being deported through theFacilitated Return Scheme. In other words, the government even offered to pay for the guy’s rehabilitation in Somalia.

“Evidence from doctors suggested the man could “become well” if he abstained from alcohol and complied with his medication,” the report notes.

Yet, Deputy Upper Tribunal Judge Ian Jarvis said “I conclude that the weight of the evidence before the Tribunal indicates that the [man] will very quickly become noncompliant with his medication.. without the 24/7 support and monitoring which he currently receives in the United Kingdom.” The judge upheld the appeal and ruled that the man’s mental health would “seriously deteriorate” if he were returned to Somalia.

Commenters on the report were not impressed by the judge’s decision:

The report further notes that its another in a long list of convicted foreign criminals attempting and in many cases succeeding in halting their deportations by claiming breaches of their human rights.

There are currently a record 41,987 outstanding immigration appeals, largely on human rights grounds.

As we highlighted last month, a convicted pedophile has escaped deportation from the UK to his native country of Pakistan after a judge ruled that he would face “inhuman or degrading treatment” there for being an alcoholic.

This case follows similar incidents, including one just last month where another Pakistani pedo was permitted to remain in the UKwith a judge ruling that deportation would be “unduly harsh” owing to the fact that his family in Pakistan took a “dim view” of his crimes.

Conservative MP Sir Alec Shelbrooke urged that “The Government needs to stop dangerous criminals being allowed to stay in this country.”

Report: Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Funded by Chinese Communist Party Intelligence Official

Far-left Boston Mayor Michelle Wu (D) received hundreds of thousands of dollars to her 2021 campaign from a fundraiser who is a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) intelligence official, an investigation by the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) recently uncovered.

Wu’s mayoral campaign was the recipient of more than $300,000 fundraised by Gary Yu, the commissioner of the Asian American & Pacific Islanders Commission and president of the New England Chinese American Alliance, the DCNF reported.

Yu, whose Chinese name is Yu Guoliang, is listed as an official in the United Front Work Department (UFWD) — the CCP’s intelligence- and influence-gathering agency that operates overseas, including in the U.S.

The DCNF also reported that Yu operates as a recruiter for the Chinese government, citing Chinese state media reports and civic associations led by Yu to back up these claims.

Wu, whose parents immigrated to the U.S. from Taiwan after her grandparents moved the family from mainland China, has recently made headlines for criticizing President Donald Trump for cracking down on illegal immigration in her sanctuary city.

“The Communist Party’s UFWD never rests,” China expert Gordon Chang told the DCNF. “There is no ethnic Chinese official in America who is not targeted. It’s time for law enforcement to investigate the CCP’s ties to Gary Yu and Yu’s ties to Mayor Michelle Wu.”

The UFWD also has significant roots in Minnesota, with ties to failed Democrat vice presidential candidate Gov. Tim Walz.

The thing about Europe, the sneerers say, is that it is over-regulated. Mounds of red tape and punitive taxes mean there are no trillion-dollar entrepreneurial ventures in France or Germany to match Amazon, Google or Tesla. But that is not all Europe is lacking. Also absent from the continent are the broligarchs who sit atop such behemoths, some of whom have a tighter grip on power than on reality. There are thus no European Rasputins pumping untold millions into political campaigns, getting pride of place at leaders’ inaugurations or their own new-minted government departments to run. There are few unicorns in Europe, alas, and too little innovation. That said, there are absolutely no tech executives boasting on social media of spending their weekends feeding bits of the state “into the wood chipper”.

The thing about Europe is that it is indecisive, too slow to act. Every crisis requires multiple summits of the European Union’s national leaders, often quibbling late into the night. The boring processes of rule by consensus can slow the EU to a crawl: it took four days and four nights of haggling to agree on the bloc’s latest seven-year budget, in 2020. Then again, the European state apparatus does not arbitrarily shut down every few years when political agreement over funding proves elusive, leaving millions of public employees on furlough and basic services unavailable for days or weeks. Consensus rule also means that the petulant policy tweets of one misguided politician—125% tariffs on China, anyone?—do not result in global stockmarkets being sent into a tailspin. The EU’s top brass are unelected and sometimes unaccountable. Still, they would not dare be photographed playing a round of golf after having wiped out the savings of millions of their compatriots.

The thing about Europe is it freeloads on defence, not spending enough on its armed forces to single-handedly fend off threats. This will continue to be true for a long time, even as defence budgets are hiked across most of the continent. But it also reflects a different understanding of what “defence” means. For one, nobody in Europe—outside Russia, at least—is even casually implying they will invade other countries. There is no Brussels quip about turning an unwilling neighbour into “our 28th state” (on the contrary, many of the EU’s neighbours are desperate to join the club). Nor do European vice-presidents fly uninvited to places they are seeking to annex, on the pretext that their spouse wants to watch a sledge race. Europe may have scrimped on intelligence-gathering, but its various leaders do know the identity of the aggressor who initiated the fighting in Ukraine (hint: it is not Ukraine). Many foresaw the pitfalls of invading Iraq a while back.

The thing about Europe is that it lacks an absolutist attachment to free speech. See how judges in Romania and France derailed the careers of hard-right politicians, who have convinced themselves (with little evidence) that it was their ideology rather than their lawbreaking that got them in trouble. Yet to many Europeans the idea that free expression is under threat seems odd. Europeans can say almost anything they want, both in theory and in practice. Europe’s universities never became hotbeds of speech-policing by one breed of culture warrior or the other. You can express a controversial view on any European campus (outside Hungary, at least) without fear of losing your tenure or your grant. No detention centres await foreign students who hold the wrong views on Gaza; news outfits are not sued for interviewing opposition politicians.

The thing about Europe is that it is facing a demographic crisis. It is staving off a sharp decline in population only by shoring up its workforce with immigrants, some of whom have integrated poorly. Such immigration shows the appeal of the European way of life; for those who come seeking refuge from war, it shows Europeans’ generosity (sometimes misguided). And while Europeans occasionally make a show of cracking down on illegal migrants, they generally rely on legal ones to pick their crops.

The thing about Europe is its economy is permanently stuck in the doldrums, a global cautionary tale. And no wonder. Europeans enjoy August off, retire in their prime and spend more time eating and socialising with their families than inhabitants of any other region. Oddly, surveys show people in countries both rich and poor value such leisure time; somehow Europeans managed to squeeze their employers into giving them more of it. Even as they were depressing GDP by wasting time playing with their kids, the denizens of Europe also managed to keep inequality relatively low while it ballooned elsewhere in the past 20 years. Nobody in Europe has spent the past week looking at their stock portfolio, wondering if they could still afford to send their kids to university. Europeans have no idea what “medical bankruptcy” is. Oh, and no EU leader has ever launched their own cryptocurrency.

Huddled masses: have you considered Europe?

The thing about Europe is it is naive, the only global trading bloc attached to moral norms. It insists on complying with the edicts of the World Trade Organisation, say, or doing its part to cut carbon emissions. It is not a place that demands allies come crawling to it begging for “favours” on tariffs.

The thing about Europe is that it is like an open-air museum, yesterday’s continent. Is its model even sustainable? A good question—one that presupposes the European model is worth defending. It is a place blessed with walkable cities, long life expectancies and vaccinated kids who do not need to be trained to dodge school shooters. Charlemagne’s realm is a place of many flaws, lots of them enduring. But in their own plodding way, Europeans have created a place where they are guaranteed rights to what others yearn for: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. ■

FBI Director Kash Patel for suspending analyst Brian Auten nearly a decade after Auten helped Democrats frame Donald Trump as a Russian asset. The NYT headline reads,“F.B.I. Suspends Employee on Patel’s So-Called Enemies List,” not something accurate such as “FBI Suspends Employee Who Illegally Abused Government Power To Protect Democrat Presidential Candidates.” (pic 2)

Predictably, other corporate media outlets took the same corrupt angle, notably an April 12 NBC article by “Fusion Ken” Dilanian and Alexandra Marquez. (pic 3) (pic 4)

Dilanian is known as a Democrat propaganda mouthpiece, particularly for spreading lies created by the Hillary Clinton campaign to smear Trump as a Russian asset. Those lies came from probable Russian assets such as Christopher Steele dossier source Igor Danchenko, meaning Clinton and Dilanian may have used actual Russian propaganda to falsely accuse their political enemies of … spreading Russian propaganda. Dilanian once described the now widely discredited Steele, whom the FBI paid for information, as “James Bond.”

The Clinton campaign paid Steele to fabricate lies about Trump in a “dossier” that Democrat operatives in the government helped launder through U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies, including the FBI. Auten was the top FBI “analyst” assigned to verify the dossier. His team, he testified to Congress in 2020, could not verify any of its salacious allegations that included the infamous “golden showers” nonsense.

So Auten knew the “dossier” was full of lies as early as 2017. Yet Auten’s “Crossfire Hurricane” FBI team still used the unverifiable, false materialto back secret warrants to spy on the Trump campaign, fueling further leaks of false information that saddled Trump’s first term with investigations and clouds of public suspicion.

A December 2019 inspector general report found Auten pushing the use of the dossier he knew to be unverified to obtain a surveillance warrant on the Trump campaign. According to the report, Auten, identified as“Supervisory Intelligence Analyst,” helped spread the unverified “dossier” to other top U.S. agencies, including the CIA, NSA, Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the White House.

“According to the Supervisory Intelligence Analyst (Supervisory Intel Analyst) [Brian Auten], the team had not corroborated the reporting concerning Carter Page’s activities by the time of [spy warrant] Renewal Application No. 1 (or subsequent renewal applications), other than confirming Carter Page’s travel to Russia in July 2016,” the IG report states.

In a world in which inspectors general more often act to cover up agency misconduct rather than resolve it,the IG publicly confirmed multiple ethical and procedural lapses by Auten and his FBI team. The IG dinged Auten and his team for using information they knew was unreliable to obtain secret surveillance warrants, using the FBI for political purposes instead of legitimate law enforcement purposes, withholding evidence about Steele’s unreliability from other intelligence agencies, not investigating leaks of sensitive information, and ignoring obvious conflicts of interest and ethics checks regarding Steele’s claims.

“Our review found that FBI personnel fell far short of the requirement in FBI policy that they ensure that all factual statements in a FISA application are ‘scrupulously accurate,’” the report says. “We identifiedmultiple instances in which factual assertionsrelied upon in the first FISA applicationwere inaccurate, incomplete, or unsupported by appropriate documentation, based upon information the FBI had in its possession at the time the application was filed.”

All this ought to be enough to fire Auten from federal employment and relieve him of any law enforcement duties forever.Other career agents testified to Congress that Auten and his team likely committed multiple federal crimes worthy of prosecution, including perjury and fraud. Yet he remained in an FBI position senior enough to also help fix the Hunter Biden laptop scandal for Democrats’ next presidential candidate, Joe Biden.

While the IG was preparing that report, Auten used FBI resources to find any tips coming to FBI offices around the country about the Biden family corruption ring, andto dirty up those more than 40 whistleblowing sources with false accusations they were “foreign disinformation,” according to Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.

This was the same false claim intelligence agencies used to pressure social media monopolies into mass censorship of information that does not boost spy agency propaganda schemes, such as Russiagate, including public knowledge of Hunter Biden’s laptop. The laptop provided reams of evidence that the Biden family traded political favors to foreigners in exchange for millions.

The utterly amazing thing is the FBI continued to employ Auten for more than five years after the public disclosure of potential crimes he committed on its payroll, not that Patel decided to put a maliciously partisan, likely criminal FBI employee on leave!

Yet the same NYT that helped the FBI and other intelligence agencies lie to Americans about Spygate, Biden corruption, and numerous other items of public importanceclownishly claims in its April 11 article that “The reasons for the suspension [of Brian Auten] remain unclear.” It further alleges Auten’s suspension is political retaliation rather than the potential beginnings of bringing justice to those who dangerously sought to turn the United States into an intelligence dictatorship.

The reporter bylining this article, Adam Goldman, is a Times national security reporter who “has been a journalist for more than two decades.” He cannot not know all of this background or he wouldn’t have this job, and he still wrote a ridiculously idiotic story claiming Auten’s firing is only explainable by political retribution.

This means Goldman is a paid shill for the world’s worst people, not a reporter of any kind. He’s not just a hack; he has no morals at all. New York Times, delenda est.

The Defense Procurement Agency (DPA) of Ukraine has delivered 420,000 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to the front since the beginning of 2025, Ukrinform reported, quoted by BTA.

The corresponding statement was made by the State Enterprise of the Defense Ministry of Ukraine "Defense Procurement Agency" (DPA) on Facebook.

"Since the beginning of 2025, 420,000 unmanned aerial vehicles have been delivered to the front. Targeting UAVs remains among the key priorities.

"Every drone flying towards the enemy is one less opportunity for the occupier and one more opportunity to save the life of a Ukrainian soldier," the information states.

According to the AOP, this year, through the coordinated efforts of the agency, the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces of Ukraine, contracts for a total of 1.52 million unmanned aerial vehicles have already been concluded.

In 2025, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense will allocate over 44 billion hryvnias for the purchase of drones, Ukrinform recalls.

4chan, the controversial forum known for birthing early meme culture and Gamergate, is down, following an apparent hack. Per Downdetector, reports of an outage began circulating late Monday evening, with users sharing updates on connection issues through the early hours of Tuesday morning. As of the writing of this article, it's possible to access the website following a long delay, but clicking on any of the board links leads to a timeout.

According to screenshots shared on Imgur (NSFW warning), it appears a hacker gained shell access to 4chan's hosting server. They then went on to post images of the site's phpmyadmin page, and appear to have doxed the entire moderation team alongside many of the site's registered users. While it seems some users took steps to protect their identities, many appear to have used their primary email address to register for the forum, with .edu and even .gov addresses reportedly appearing in the list leaked emails.

It's unclear what this means for the future of 4chan, but some social media and Reddit users are speculating this could be the end of the internet's most infamous forum. In addition to doxing much of 4chan's userbase, the hacker also appears to have leaked the site's source code, revealing security holes that have existed since around the time Hiroyuki Nishimura bought the forum from creator Christoper Poole. It may take months to rebuild a more secure version of 4chan.

If this is the end of 4chan, it would be the most significant de-platforming of extreme right-wing internet users since Kiwi Farms temporarily went down in 2022.

Ukraine has pounded Russia’s Kursk region with dozens of drones, killing an elderly woman, injuring nine people and sparking fires, Russian authorities have said.

Over 100 drones were shot down over the region where Ukrainian forces have been locked in a grinding conflict, the Russian defence ministry claimed on Tuesday.

"Kursk has been subjected to a massive enemy attack overnight," the Kursk region administration said in a post on Telegram messaging app.

"Unfortunately, an 85-year-old woman died."

A multi-storey apartment building was damaged by the drone attack, with several flats catching fire, acting mayor of Kursk, Sergei Kotlyarov said on Telegram. Residents have been evacuated to a nearby school, he added.

The region's administration posted photos of a multi-storey apartment building with blown-out windows and fire damage to the facade. Drones also hit an ambulance garage, damaging 11 cars, it said.

Three people were killed in the region as a result of a Ukrainian drone attack, officials also said on Monday evening.

The reports are yet to be independently verified and there has been no immediate comment from Ukraine.

The attack follows a devastating Russian missile and bomb attack on the Ukrainian city of Sumy over the weekend that killed 35 people and injured at least 119.

Following the deadly strike, US President Donald Trump joined world leaders in calling the attack “terrible” but then appeared to later blame his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky, for starting the war in Ukraine.

Asked about Mr Zelensky during a meeting with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, Trump said: "When you start a war, you've got to know you can win the war.

"You don't start a war against somebody that's 20 times your size. And then hope that people give you some missiles."

He also told reporters: "If Biden were competent, and if Zelensky were competent, and I don't know that he is...

"There was no way that war should never have been allowed to happen." He added: "Biden could have stopped it, and Zelensky could have stopped it, and Putin should have never started it."

Meanwhile, Zelensky has urged Trump to visit Ukraine and witness first hand the devastation caused by Russia’s invasion.

Trump, who says he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker, has repeatedly said he wants to end the "bloodbath" of the three-year war in Ukraine, though a deal has yet to be agreed.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that it was not easy to agree with the US on the key parts of a possible peace deal to end the war and that Russia would never again allow itself to depend economically on the West.

Both Ukraine and Russia have denied targeting civilians since Russia first launched its full-scale invasion on Ukraine more than three years ago. But thousands of civilians have died in the conflict, the vast majority of them Ukrainian.

Kursk and other Russian regions on the border with Ukraine have been subject to frequent air and land attacks by Kyiv forces who say their goal is to undermine Moscow's overall war efforts.

Ukrainian troops last year staged a cross-border incursion into the Kursk region of which the city of Kursk is the administrative centre.

Ukrainian forces still remain in parts of the region, although Russian forces have recaptured much lost territory.

Russia currently controls a little under one-fifth of Ukraine, including Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, and parts of four other regions Moscow now claims are part of Russia - a claim not recognised by most countries.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is pursuing a permanent peace and a legally binding settlement to the Ukraine conflict, US special envoy Steve Witkoff has told Fox News.

Witkoff, tasked by US President Donald Trump to lead negotiations with Moscow, met with Putin and two of his senior advisers on Friday.

The US envoy shared details of the talks in an interview on Monday, describing the nearly five-hour meeting with Putin as “compelling” and saying it brought the Ukraine peace process to “the verge” of a breakthrough.

According to Witkoff, Putin is pursuing a lasting solution. “So beyond just a ceasefire, we got an answer to that,” the envoy said, adding it “took a while for us to get to this place.”

A key part of any deal, Witkoff said, would be the recognition that Crimea, the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and Kherson and Zaporozhye Regions are part of Russia. However, he emphasized that the proposed agreement goes beyond territorial issues.

“There’re security protocols, NATO Article 5 [on collective security] … a lot of detail attached to it. It’s a complicated situation,” he said.

Still, Witkoff said he believed the two sides “might be on the verge of something that would be very, very important for the world at large.”

Friday’s meeting was Witkoff’s third with the Russian president since February. Trump has repeatedly said he aims to end the hostilities in Ukraine as quickly as possible.

Russia has maintained it is open to peace talks, provided its key security demands are addressed.

Moscow opposes any NATO presence on Ukrainian soil and has demanded that Kiev demilitarize, denazify, adhere to a position of neutrality, and recognize the territorial “realities on the ground.”

The Russian government has insisted it will not accept a freeze of the conflict, which it maintains will only lead to renewed hostilities later on.

Moscow has cited Ukraine’s violations of a US-proposed moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure as proof of Kiev’s untrustworthiness.

Commenting on Putin’s meeting with Witkoff, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Tuesday there were “no clear outlines of any agreement yet,” but that there was the political will to move forward.

Moscow, he added, values the “constructive and substantive” contact with the US side.

The top brass in the FBI and intelligence community were determined to stop President Trump from winning the White House in 2016, and they talked about removing him from office months after he was sworn in, according to newly released documents.

The zeal to pin Russian collusion allegations on Mr. Trump spilled out of the 700 pages of emails, memos, interviews and other material connected to the 2016 “Crossfire Hurricane” probe that were newly made public by the Trump administration.

Some of the material is familiar, released in 2021 by Mr. Trump on the final day of his first term. Other pages provide greater detail about the unprecedented secret probe and spy operation on Mr. Trump’s campaign that followed him into the White House.

In one newly released memo, dated May 2017, four months into Mr. Trump’s first term, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe discussed “the President’s capacity and the possibility that he could be removed from office under the 25th Amendment.”

At the time, the Justice Department was reeling over Mr. Trump’s firing of FBI Director James B. Comey on May 9, 2017, and was weighing the appointment of a special counsel to oversee the FBI’s probe into allegations, later proven phony, that Mr. Trump colluded with Russia to win the election.

Mr. Rosenstein said he believed he “might already have two supporters” among the eight cabinet members he would need to remove Mr. Trump under the 25th Amendment: Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly.

The plan never moved forward and Mr. Kelly was elevated to serve as Mr. Trump’s White House Chief of Staff a mere two months later, in July of 2017. He left the White House in January 2019.

The new documents provide additional details about the motive behind the phony “Steele Dossier,” paid for and created on behalf of Hillary Clinton’s campaign, that alleges Russia had damaging information about President Trump.

The dossier, never verified or fully trusted by anyone in the federal government, nonetheless became the centerpiece of the FBI’s evidence against Mr. Trump and was used to obtain a secret warrant to spy on his 2016 campaign.

On Aug. 3, 2016, during the final stretch of the presidential campaign, CIA Director John O. Brennan met with President Obama, Vice President Joseph R. Biden and other senior administration officials, including Attorney General Loretta Lynch, to discuss “Russian interference efforts,” according to a memo declassified in 2020 and written by John Ratcliffe, who was the Director of National Intelligence.

Mr. Brennan briefed the group on the “intelligence” gathered on Mr. Trump by the Clinton campaign. He told the group of the “alleged approval by Hillary Clinton on 26 July of a proposal from one of her [campaign] advisors to vilify Donald Trump by stirring up a scandal claiming interference by Russian security services.”

Newly released Crossfire Hurricane documents show that the dossier’s author, Christopher Steele, a former British spy, was desperate to ensure Mrs. Clinton won the 2016 election. Mr. Steele told the FBI, according to a 2017 memo, that Mr. Trump was his “main opponent” and that he feared “how Trump’s presidency negatively impacted the historical U.K.-U.S. alliance and the U.S.-U.K. special relationship.”

Days after the 2016 election, the FBI interviewed Bruce Ohr, then an associate deputy attorney general who was urged by Mr. Steele to open an investigation into Mr. Trump’s Russia connections.

Mr. Ohr described Mr. Steele as “desperate that Donald Trump not get elected and was passionate about him not being the U.S. president.” He said he believed Mr. Steele “wanted to blunt or foil the Kremlin’s plans.”

Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s 18-month investigation found no evidence Mr. Trump colluded with Russia to win the presidency but concluded Russia had acted to interfere in the election to benefit Mr. Trump.

The newly released documents show desperation to stop Mr. Trump among top brass from the FBI. The deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division, Peter Strzok, an avowed Trump hater, discussed in inter-bureau electronic messages the FBI’s proposal to form a “Trump unit” to investigate the new president days before he was sworn into office in 2017.

Democrats Openly Refused to Learn 2024’s Lessons; America Will Refuse Them Right Back in the Midterms.

There was a time when political parties engaged in introspection after electoral defeats. Psephological autopsies–despite some of their stupidity–are scarcely novel.

But 2025’s Democratic Party appears insistent on bucking the trend of self-reflection, pressing on with its recently rejected extremist platform, promoting its most heinous abusers of the electorate as its most vocal spokespeople,and shoving in America’s face its losing mantra: We’re Not Going Back.

And America should, at least for once, believe the Democrats when they say this.

Instead of reevaluating strategies and/or even apologizing to the wider electorate, the party continues to champion policies and positions that alienated a record-breaking number of voters. During the 2024 election, nearly half of Hispanics supported Donald Trump despite the incessant racial pandering and fearmongering (or perhaps, better yet, as a result of them).

On cultural issues, the party’s stance is increasingly disconnected from mainstream America. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s “I’m not a biologist” moment still looms large in meme culture, and no one is “over” (nor should they be) how Democrats have championed men in women’s locker rooms for the past decade.

For all that Bill Maher and James Carville kick and scream in their own party’s direction, the answer from up top still comes back the same: We’re Not Going Back.

On immigration, the Democratic Party finds itself at odds with America again, opposing legislation aimed at deporting non-citizens convicted of crimes, most recently pledging to send emissaries to El Salvador to re-emigrate alleged MS-13 gangster Kilmar Abrego Garcia.

Whatever the squishiest amongst you argue of the so-called lack of “due process” behind Garcia’s removal, you will continue to find yourselves spitting into the wind as far as the American electorate is concerned. While data indicates the nation is increasingly quizzical when it comes to Trump’s tariff strategy and broader economic plan, his immigration numbers remain steady and favorable.

In January, 158 House Democrats voted against a bill that would have mandated the deportation of foreign-born criminals, which Republicans should freely clip from and cite in the impending mid term election battles. With a svelte majority, the GOP should be looking to go on the strategic offensive, rather than sit back and hope to maintain. At least by the right’s standards, the soil is fertile.

Finally, Democrats’ continued commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, coupled with a resistance to any internal leadership change which recognises the shortcomings of the party, gives Republicans a huge opportunity, if they’re smart enough and brave enough to take it: run on the last election.

The ad campaigns could literally hark back to November: “Hey, remember when you roundly rejected extreme Democrats and their radical agenda? *insert Kamala cackle* ==Well, guess what? They’re doubling down. Claiming they weren’t wrong, but you were. A party this obstinate and vengeful against America can’t be rewarded with success in the upcoming elections. Say no to the radical Democrats FOR GOOD until they change… FOR GOOD.”

Bill Maher had a fiery exchange with Washington Post columnist Josh Rogin after the latter accused him of having “fallen into the trap” by recently meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House.

The pair’s spat came after Maher, a vocal Trump critic who has occasionally scolded the left-wing, told his “Real Time” audience during Friday’s episode that he had a “gracious and measured” dinner with Trump, Kid Rock, and UFC Head Dana White earlier this month.

“You can hate me for it, but I’m not a liar,” Maher told the crowd. “Trump was gracious and measured. And why isn’t that in other settings? I don’t know, and I can’t answer, and it’s not my place to answer. I’m just telling you what I saw, and I wasn’t high.”

A “mind-blown” Maher admitted that Trump’s residency in the White House isn’t as “fucked up” as he thought and applauded the president for his “willingness to listen and accept me as a possible friend even though I’m not MAGA.”

After Maher said that he reported on his dining experience with Trump “as honest as I can be” during a panel discussion later in the show, Rogin challenged him about the meeting, telling the “Real Time” host that while he believed he was in attendance in “good faith,” Trump might’ve had ill motives.

“I think you’ve fallen into the trap, and I think I represent 99% of the internet when I say this: you’ve played the game of proximity is principle,” Rogin said. “I’m not questioning your motivation; I’m questioning Trump’s, OK?”

Rogin then tried to ease the blow of his words by gushing over Maher’s talents, which apparently set the political commentator off.

“You don’t have to patronize me, dude. I don’t know you. I’ve never met you,” Maher fired back at Rogin. “Not everybody has to like it. That’s what we said.

There are people who didn’t want it to happen at all. You sound like one of them, it’s OK.”

After Rogin tried to talk over the comedian in response, Maher firmly replied, “Did you hear what I said? What is the alternative to not talking? Just sit at your lunch table and don’t talk to anybody?”

But Rogin didn’t let up, telling Maher, “I agree with the principle of engagement. I’m just saying from [Trump’s] perspective…all Americans know that for him this was a PR stunt, and in his view you were a prop in that PR stunt.”

Piers Morgan, another guest on the panel, cut in on the conversation to side with Maher.

“I don’t agree with that...If you go on social media for five minutes now, you just have this tribal fury raging all day long. Everyone’s got to be implacably there, implacably here, and actually, most Americans and most Brits; they’re not like that,” Morgan explained. “And then, the idea that Bill Maher is now going to stop criticizing Donald Trump… is preposterous!”

Elsewhere in the episode, Maher shut down Rogin’s take on his meeting with Trump.

“The fact that you began your little rant with ‘the internet’ ― that tells me everything. You take your cues from the internet. Good luck,” he told Rogin.

Their so-called “legal strategy” is nothing more than lawfare—a desperate attempt to cripple Trump’s ability to deliver on his promises, from restoring economic prosperity to draining the swamp. And who’s footing the bill for this circus? You, the American taxpayer.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg gave thought to spinning off Instagram as Big Tech antitrust scrutiny intensified, according to a 2018 memo that surfaced Tuesday as Zuckerberg took the stand to defend his company against claims that Meta illegally dominated social media.

"I wonder if we should consider the extreme step of spinning Instagram out as a separate company," Zuckerberg said in the memo shown on the second day of a trial pitting Meta against President Trump's Federal Trade Commission.

"As calls to break up the big tech companies grow, there is a non-trivial chance that we will be forced to spin out Instagram and perhaps Whatsapp in the next 5-10 years anyway," Zuckerberg wrote in 2018 to other executives, according to Reuters.

The FTC is now asking for D.C. federal district court Judge James Boasberg as part of this new antitrust trial to force Meta (META) to sell off Instagram as well as its messaging service, WhatsApp.

Instagram became a central topic for Zuckerberg as he spent his second day on the witness stand answering numerous questions from government prosecutors and being confronted with his past words and documents.

In a 2012 email, Zuckerberg told Facebook’s then-CFO, David Ebersman, that a purchase of Instagram and other startups could be looked at as a way for Facebook to buy time.

“Even if some new competitor springs up, buying Instagram, Path, Foursquare etc. now will give us a year or more to integrate their dynamics before anyone can get close to their scale again,” Zuckerberg wrote, according to an account of the testimony reported by Bloomberg.

Zuckerberg agreed under questioning by the FTC’s attorney that buying Instagram was intended to “neutralize a competitor,” but he added that the purchase was also meant to boost Facebook’s quality and functionality.

​​“I read this as talking about incorporating the functionality and staying ahead in terms of quality. But scale is one aspect of that, and time is one aspect of that,” Zuckerberg testified, according to Bloomberg.

“It’s not accurate to say that the only reason we were interested was the scale or growth rate, which I think that your question is implying.”

Zuckerberg told the court that Facebook’s interest in Instagram was also tied to its struggle to build its own photo-sharing app.

While the company was analyzing building versus buying a camera app, he said he thought Instagram was “better at that, so I thought it was better to buy them."

"Building a new app is hard,” Zuckerberg testified, “and many more times than not when we have tried to build a new app, it hasn't gotten a lot of traction.”

Oldest known survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack dies at age 106

"To us, he was more than a hero," Vaughn P. Drake Jr.'s son said.

Vaughn P. Drake Jr., a Kentuckian believed to be the oldest survivor of the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor, has died at the age of 106, according to his family.

Drake passed away on April 7 in the Lexington, Kentucky, area, where he grew up, according to his obituary published on the website of the Milward Funeral Home in Lexington.

"My father never sought the spotlight, but he understood the importance of remembering and honoring history," Drake's 74-year-old son, Samuel Drake, of Lexington, said in a statement shared with ABC News on Tuesday by Military Missions, a Kentucky organization with which he's affiliated that provides care packages to U.S. military members stationed overseas.

Pacific Historic Park, a nonprofit group supporting historical sites in the Pacific, including Pearl Harbor, said in a Facebook post that Drake "was the oldest known Pearl Harbor survivor."

"He was proud of his service and proud to be part of a generation that stood up in defense of freedom," Samuel Drake, a Vietnam War veteran, said of his father. "To us, he was more than a hero; he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and a humble man who lived with integrity every single day."

On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, Vaughn Drake was a 23-year-old member of the Army Corps of Engineers at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when a large squadron of Japanese military aircraft attacked the U.S. Pacific Fleet there.

"We were still in the barracks when they first hit," Drake recalled in a 2016 interview with the Lexington Herald-Leader. "We were getting ready to go to breakfast, and we heard all these planes flying over and making a lot of noise."

Drake said he initially thought U.S. military aircraft were conducting practice maneuvers over Oahu "until we saw a bomb hit one of the buildings over in the Kaneohe Naval Air Station and smoke rose up."

"We knew by then it was more than just maneuvers," Drake said. "It had to be a real attack. It just didn't seem possible. No one could possibly believe that such a thing could happen and even when it was happening we didn't believe it."

The surprise attack, launched from Japanese aircraft carriers 230 miles north of Oahu, killed 2,390 American service members and civilians, according to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial website. More than 20 U.S. naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 American airplanes were either destroyed or damaged in the attack.

The attack prompted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to ask Congress to declare war on Japan, which marked the United States' entry into World War II. In a famous speech before a joint session of Congress on Dec. 8, 1941, Roosevelt described the attack as "a day that will live in infamy."

"I do feel like a part of history," Drake told the Herald-Leader in the 2016 interview. "I haven't made it the big thing in my life."

In a social media post on Tuesday, Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton wrote, "We have lost an amazing hero in Vaughn Drake, Jr. Our city, state, and country will be forever grateful for his military service."

Following Pearl Harbor, Drake fought in the Battle of Saipan in 1944 and later that year in the Marianas Campaign, which the National Parks Service said was the "most decisive battle of the Pacific Theater" during World War II.

Drake was awarded the special Congressional Medal for the Veterans of Pearl Harbor, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the American Defense Medal with Foreign Service bar, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two battles stars, and the World War II Victory Medal, according to his obituary.

Following World War II, Drake,who was born in Winchester, Kentucky, on Nov. 6, 1918, attended the University of Kentucky College of Engineering and worked as a registered professional engineer for more than 50 years, according to his obituary.He retired in 1981 from the General Telephone Company, where he worked as a valuation engineering manager, supervising the construction of underground telephone conduits in and around Lexington, his obituary said.

Drake was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Lina Wilson Drake. He is survived by his son, two grandsons and three great-grandchildren, according to his obituary.

Drake is scheduled to be buried on Thursday following a military service at the Winchester Cemetery near Lexington.
