Kremlin responds to Trump’s threat over Ukraine deal

Moscow remains ready for an equitable and respectable dialogue, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said

The Kremlin has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s threats of sanctions and tariffs over a Ukraine peace deal,calling the tactics “nothing new.”Trump issued a thinly-veiled ultimatum to Moscow on Wednesday by calling on it to end the Ukraine conflict and strike a “deal” or to face new sanctions instead.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday thatRussia remains open to “equal and respectful dialogue” with the United States, adding that, during his first term in office, Trump had engaged in this kind of exchange with President Vladimir Putin. Now, Russia is waiting for similar signals but has not seen any so far, according to the spokesman.

“Trump in his first term was the US president most frequently resorting to sanctions. He likes this method,” Peskov added.

Trump issued the warning in a post on his Truth Social online platform. Should no peace “deal” materialize “soon” enough, Trump would “have no other choice but to put high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries.”

Addressing the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, by videolink on Thursday,Trump has said he would “very much like” to meet his Russian counterpart “soon” to end the ongoing Ukraine conflict.

Trump, who started his second term as president this week, campaigned on a promise to swiftly resolve the Ukraine conflict. He repeatedly promised to stop the fighting within 24 hours if returned to office. In the weeks leading up to his inauguration he adjusted his timeline, expressing hope to negotiate peace within six months.

Russia has also repeatedly stated throughout the conflict that it is ready for peace negotiations at any time, while accusing Kiev of refusing to talk. Moscow has also repeatedly criticized the West’s continued military aid for Ukraine, arguing that it is only prolonging the conflict and extending human suffering. An ever deeper Western engagement in the conflict also poses risks of a direct clash between Russia and NATO, Moscow has warned.

Trump to pull 20,000 US troops from Europe – Italian media

The US president could also demand that the EU pays for remaining American personnel, ANSA news agency has reported

US President Donald Trump is considering reducing his country's military contingent in Europe by 20% as he reviews Washington’s commitment to the continent, Italian news agency ANSA has reported, citing EU diplomatic sources.

If the pullout occurs, the number of US service personnel in Europewill decrease from around 100,000 to 80,000, the agency reported on Wednesday.

In recent conversations with European leadersTrump has “consistently” expressed a desire to downsize the US military presence on the continent, the sources said.

“Furthermore, for those [US troops] who remain, he would like financial contributions from European countries, because these soldiers are a deterrent, and the costs cannot be borne solely by American taxpayers,” one of ANSA’s sources claimed.

Earlier this month, Trump said NATO member states in the EU should be spending 5% of their GDP on defense, way beyond the current goal of 2%. “They can afford it,” he claimed.

On Tuesday, the US president== called on Brussels to “equalize” with Washington when it comes to the support it provides to Ukraine]].

“We are in there for $200 billion more than the EU. I mean, what are we, stupid? I guess the answer is ‘yes.’ They must think so,” he said.

Trump also pledged to impose tariffs on the bloc due to its trade surplus with the US. “The EU is very bad for us,” he claimed.

During a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron noted: “now that the new administration has taken office in the US, it is more important than everfor Europeans…to play their full part in consolidating a united, strong, and sovereign Europe.”

(Macron in some ways has been trying for years for the EU and European Countries to defend themselves and get together to do this, NONE of the countries even try to protect themselves, even NATO is weak, but the war mongers there, want war to justify it.)

Scholz backed Macron’s stance, acknowledging that “it is already clear that President Trump will be a challenge” for the EU.

With an autograph envelope addressed to "Baroness Rothschild | 950 Park Avenue | By Hand" bearing an additional signature from Jacqueline Kennedy, and a black-bordered printed card stating "Mrs. Kennedy is deeply appreciative of your sympathy and grateful for your thoughtfulness"; scattered soiling and wear to envelope and card.

In the days that followed her husband's tragic death, Jackie appears to have visited with the Baroness Clarice de Rothschild for tea, and a viewing of her famed art collection (now housed, in part, at the MFA Boston). Here, she writes to the Baroness following the visit to thank her for her hospitality. Most intriguingly, she expresses a poignant affinity for Marie Antoinette, spurred by drawings she saw that day:

"If only I could express to you how much I enjoyed coming to tea with you on Tuesday. BREAKING: Cops give update on Nashville school shooting

The continuing investigation into Wednesday morning’s murder-suicide inside Antioch High School’s cafeteria shows that 17-year-old gunman Solomon Henderson fired a total of ten shots from a nine-millimeter pistol within 17 seconds after he entered the cafeteria. Henderson’s gun was loaded with nine rounds when it was recovered by police. A pistol magazine loaded with seven rounds was recovered from the cafeteria floor.

No firearms or firearm parts were found during a Wednesday afternoon/evening search of Henderson’s Carefree Lane residence.

Detectives have now confirmed that Henderson was brought to school on Wednesday by his mother, not by bus as was believed on Wednesday. The investigation shows that just prior to entering the cafeteria, Henderson went into a nearby restroom where he posted photos to social media.

In the aftermath of the shooting, detectives have found two documents believed to have been created by Henderson on non-traditional websites, one 51 pages in length, the other 288 pages. That material, along with evidence recovered from the residence Wednesday, is under close scrutiny by Homicide Unit detectives, detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division, and the FBI. It is clear that Henderson was significantly influenced by web-based material, especially that found on non-traditional sites that most would find harmful and objectionable. The FBI is working closely with the MNPD in the ideological influences portion of this investigation.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms (ATF) is working closely with the police department to determine the origin of the gun Henderson used and how it came into his possession. At this point, it is known that the pistol was purchased by an individual in Arizona in 2022. It had not been reported stolen. Efforts continue here and out of state to further this aspect of the overall investigation.

Chief Drake extends the police department’s deep condolences to Antioch High students, parents and staff. MNPD officers and counselors are working to be a part of the healing process. Persons impacted by Wednesday’s tragedy who need counseling assistance, in English or in Spanish, can contact the department’s Family Intervention Program at 615-862-7773. The department continues to be in regular discussion with the school system concerning campus and classroom safety, particularly at Antioch High when classes resume next week.

As a reminder, the Security Threat component of the MNPD takes on-line, written and verbal threats against schools and institutions very seriously and works to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible. Three persons have been arrested today in unrelated threat cases. Those will be detailed in a subsequent media release.

WASHINGTON — President Trump pardoned nearly two dozen pro-life activists Thursday who were convicted under a federal law of illegally trying to block abortion clinic entrances or otherwise keep women from undergoing the procedure.

The pardons, Trump said in the Oval Office, will go to 23 “peaceful protestors” who were prosecuted under the Biden administration.

“Twenty-three people were prosecuted who should not have been prosecuted. Many of them are elderly people. They should not have been prosecuted,” the president said. “This is a great honor to sign this.”

The Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, enacted in 1994 by former President Bill Clinton, prohibits use of physical force, threat of physical force, or physical obstruction to injure, intimidate or otherwise interfere with “any class of persons [in] obtaining or providing reproductive health services.”

The law also has the same stipulations allowing free access to places of worship — but conservatives say Democratic administrations have been more interested in prosecuting abortion clinic obstruction.

Trump issued the pardons one day before the annual March for Life in Washington, DC, which he will address via video feed.

The Republican had vowed on the campaign trail to issue the pardons if he got to the White House.

Trump’s incoming Secret Service Director Sean Curran is expected to clean house on his first day on the job, according to Real Clear Politics.

“On incoming Secret Service Director Sean Curran’s first day in the new role, 5-10 senior leadership officials, including former Director Ron Rowe, were warned that they would either be fired, moved, or pressed into retirement, according to three sources in the Secret Service community,” RCP reporter Susan Crabtree said on Thursday.

President Trump on Wednesday announced Sean Curran, one of the agents who surrounded him following the Butler assassination attempt, as the new Secret Service Director.

“It is my great honor to appoint Sean Curran as the next Director of the United States Secret Service. Sean is a Great Patriot, who has protected my family over the past few years, and that is why I trust him to lead the Brave Men and Women of the United States Secret Service,” Trump said on Truth Social on Wednesday.

“Sean has 23 years of Law Enforcement experience, starting his career in Secret Service in 2001, as a Special Agent in the Newark Field Office, where he conducted protection, intelligence, investigations, recruitment, and logistics support for the district. During my First Term, Sean served as the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division, with direct oversight and responsibility of multiple protectees, and enhanced security plans for my residences,” Trump said.

“Sean has distinguished himself as a brilliant leader, who is capable of directing and leading operational security plans for some of the most complex Special Security Events in the History of our Country, and the World. He proved his fearless courage when he risked his own life to help save mine from an assassin’s bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania. I have complete and total confidence in Sean to make the United States Secret Service stronger than ever before,” Trump added.

Secret Service Director appointments do not require a Senate confirmation vote.

Curran will replace Ron Rowe who was serving as the acting Secret Service Director after Kim Cheatle resigned over the summer.

According to Real Clear Politics reporter Susan Crabtree, Sean Curran is going to oust up to 10 senior leadership officials in the Secret Service.

Former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has had his security details revoked.

According to The New York Times, both Pompeo and his former aide, Brian Hook, have had their details removed despite warnings from the Biden administration that they face a threat from Iran.

Pompeo was informed of the revocation on Tuesday and has not yet issued a public statement on the matter.

The decision came shortly after Trump also pulled the details of his former National Security Advisor, John Bolton, who has been a vocal critic of him since leaving the administration in 2019.

The Times notes:

Other than former presidents and their spouses, senior U.S. officials are not automatically granted ongoing protection. But the threat assessments from the intelligence community that the risk level remained for Mr. Pompeo, Mr. Hook and Mr. Bolton had been the basis for the Biden administration granting it to them.

President Joseph R. Biden Jr. had his aides warn the Iranians that assassinating a former U.S. government official would be considered an act of war, a former senior administration official said.

Mr. Bolton parted with the first Trump administration on bad terms, wrote a tell-all book about his tenure and has been deeply critical of Mr. Trump.

But it is less clear why the president would order the removal of the security details for Mr. Pompeo and Mr. Hook, who have been supportive of him.

Mr. Trump has told people he does not want anyone working for him who worked under Mr. Pompeo in his first term.

While Pompeo has never been a vocal critic of Trump, he remains a deeply unpopular figure among the MAGA base for his hardline neoconservative views and close involvement with the permanent deep state.

Following Trump’s departure from the White House in 2021, Pompeo was said to be exploring the possibility of running against him for the Republican nomination.

However, he eventually decided against a run but insisted he was keen on a role in the second administration.

Trump had other ideas.

Shortly after his victory last November, Trump announced that neither Pompeo nor fellow neocon Nikki Haley would be offered a position.

“I will not be inviting former Ambassador Nikki Haley, or former Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to join the Trump administration, which is currently information,” he wrote on Truth Social at the time.

John Eastman: Birthright citizenship is not guaranteed by 14th Amendment

Claremont Institute scholars, including me, Ed Erler, Tom West, John Marini, and Michael Anton, President Trump’s incoming Director of Policy Planning at the State Department, have been contending for years—decades, really—that the 14th Amendment’s Citizenship Clause does not provide automatic citizenship for everyone born on U.S. soil, no matter the circumstances. Other prominent scholars, such as the late University of Texas law Professor Lino Graglia, University of Pennsylvania Professor Rogers Smith, and Yale Law Professor Emeritus Peter Schuck, have come to the same conclusion based on their own extensive scholarly research.

Claremont scholars have made the argument in books, law review articles, congressional testimony, and legal briefs. President Ronald Reagan’s Attorney General, Edwin Meese, even joined one of those briefs, in which we argued against treating enemy combatant Yaser Esam Hamdi as a citizen merely because he had been born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, while his father was working in the U.S. on a temporary work visa. Perhaps as a result of our brief in that case, the late Justice Antonin Scalia referred to Hamdi as a “presumed citizen” in his dissenting opinion.

Our argument is straightforward. The text of the 14th Amendment contains two requirements for acquiring automatic citizenship by birth: one must be born in the United States and be subject to its jurisdiction. The proper understanding of the Citizenship Clause therefore turns on what the drafters of the amendment, and those who ratified it, meant by “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.” Was it merely a partial, temporary jurisdiction, such as applies to anyone (except for diplomats) who are subject to our laws while they are within our borders? Or does it instead apply only to those who are subject to a more complete jurisdiction, one which manifests itself as owing allegiance to the United States and not to any foreign power?

Think of it this way. Someone from Great Britain visiting the United States is subject to our laws while here, which is to say subject to our partial or territorial jurisdiction. He must drive on the right-hand side of the road rather than the left, for example. But he does not thereby owe allegiance to the United States; he is not subject to being drafted into our army; and he cannot be prosecuted for treason (as opposed to ordinary violations of law) if he takes up arms against the United States, for he has breached no oath of allegiance.

So which understanding of “subject to the jurisdiction” did the drafters of the 14th Amendment have in mind?

Happily, we don’t need to speculate, as they were asked that very question. They unambiguously stated that it meant “complete” jurisdiction, such as existed under the law at the time, the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which excluded from citizenship those born on U.S. soil who were “subject to a foreign power.”

The Supreme Court confirmed that understanding (albeit in dicta) in the first case addressing the 14th Amendment, noting in The Slaughterhouse Cases in 1872 that “[t]he phrase, ‘subject to its jurisdiction’ was intended to exclude from its operation children of ministers, consuls, and citizens or subjects of foreign States born within the United States.” It then confirmed that understanding in the 1884 case of Elk v. Wilkins, holding that the “subject to the jurisdiction” phrase required that one be “not merely subject in some respect or degree to the jurisdiction of the United States, but completely subject to their political jurisdiction, and owing them direct and immediate allegiance.” John Elk, the Native American claimant in the case, did not meet that requirement because, as a mem­ber of an Indian tribe at his birth, he “owed imme­diate allegiance to” his tribe and not to the United States.

Thomas Cooley, the leading treatise writer of the era, also confirmed that “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States “meant full and complete jurisdic­tion to which citizens are generally subject, and not any qualified and partial jurisdiction, such as may consist with allegiance to some other government.” More fundamentally, this understanding of the Citizenship Clause is the only one compatible with the consent of the governed principle articulated in the Declaration of Independence.

All of this matters a great deal because on the first day of his second term in office, President Trump issued an executive order, “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship,” which adopted the view of the Citizenship Clause I and other Claremont scholars have espoused. It directs every department and agency of the U.S. government to accept our view henceforth as the correct interpretation of the Constitution’s Citizenship Clause.

This may be the most legally controversial executive order issued by the president on day one. And because of that, it is already being challenged in court, as 22 states have filed a lawsuit trying to block its implementation a little more than 24 hours after it was signed.

In the coming days and weeks, just as with that lawsuit, there will be lots of pundits opining that the president had no authority to issue such an order because the Constitution mandates automatic citizenship for everyone born on U.S. soil, a mandate that cannot be changed with the stroke of a president’s pen. They will contend that the Supreme Court already settled the issue more than a century ago in the 1898 case of United States v. Wong Kim Ark.

But even if Wong Kim Ark was correctly decided (as Ed Erler points out, it was not), honest scholars must acknowledge that Wong Kim Ark involved a child born to parents who were permanently domiciled in the United States, not those who were only here temporarily or illegally. Indeed, honest scholars will be forced to acknowledge that the Supreme Court has never held that the children of illegal immigrants, or even temporary lawful visitors, are constitutionally entitled to automatic citizenship merely by virtue of their birth in the United States. And they will be forced to acknowledge as true the claim in Trump’s executive order that “the Fourteenth Amendment has never been interpreted [in any formal, binding way] to extend citizenship universally to everyone born in the United States.”

Alas, when it comes to anything related to Trump, there are very few honest scholars. Instead of acknowledging the Supreme Court’s limited, actual holding in Wong Kim Ark, they will point to dicta in which the Court’s majority falsely claimed that the Citizenship Clause codified the old English common law rule known as jus soli—that anyone born on the king’s soil owed perpetual allegiance to the king. They will overlook that our Declaration of Independence was an explicit and eloquent repudiation of jus soli, stating in its closing paragraph that “these United Colonies…are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown.” They will overlook that Congress did not view Wong Kim Ark as mandating automatic citizenship for everyone born on U.S. soil when, a quarter century later, it extended citizenship to Native Americans pursuant to its power under the Naturalization Clause, an act that would have been superfluous if Wong Kim Ark had already settled the matter that everyone born in the U.S., including Native Americans, were automatically citizens. And they will overlook that when a 1920s guest worker program ended in the wake of the Great Depression and more than a million Mexican workers were repatriated to Mexico, the repatriation included their U.S.-born children. No one at the time claimed that the children were U.S. citizens.

Nevertheless, despite the original meaning of the Constitution’s text, its initial interpretation by the Supreme Court, and its compatibility with the social compact “consent of the governed” political theory of the Declaration, our government agencies have for more than a half-century, without any formal amendment, court decision, or official authoritative pronouncement, been acting as though birth alone is sufficient to confer citizenship. And many children of illegal immigrants or temporary visitors have organized their lives in reliance on those informal views. (President Trump’s executive order does not disturb those interests. It makes the order applicable only to children born on U.S. soil more than 30 days after the order’s effective date, to parents who were unlawfully present, or lawfully but only temporarily present, in the United States at the time of their birth.)

As a result of this order and the inevitable legal challenges to it, the Supreme Court will now, for the first time, have the opportunity to acknowledge that the Claremont Institute’s long-standing view of the Citizenship Clause is the correct one. With the Court currently composed of more originalist justices than has been the case in more than a century, we anticipate with great optimism a careful and considered assessment of the clause and a restoration of the fundamental notion that ours is a country rooted in consent, not in the old feudal notion of jus soli that was so thoroughly rejected in our Declaration of Independence.

U.S. House Republicans roll out bill to restrict birthright citizenship

WASHINGTON — Falling in line with President Donald Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship, House Republicans on Thursday unveiled legislation that would amend federal immigration law to narrow the scope of citizenship, although the right is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

Trump’s Monday executive order has already faced staunch legal challenges from Democratic state attorneys general and the ACLU, with oral arguments on a multistate case starting Thursday in federal court in Washington state.

The sponsor of the House bill, H.R. 569, GOP Texas Rep. Brian Babin, said he welcomed the legal challenges to Trump’s executive order and to his bill.

“We appreciate and wanted the challenges to this,” he said. “So we can get it into the Supreme Court of the United States. This thing could take up to three years before it winds up on the high court and let’s see how they (rule).”

Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs, who was also at the press conference, said that despite a Supreme Court case in 1898 that upheld birthright citizenship as written in the 14th Amendment, he thinks the GOP bill will be upheld in the courts.

Other Republicans at the press event included Reps. Mike Collins of Georgia, Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee, Brandon Gill of Texas, John Rose of Tennessee, Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin and Ralph Norman of South Carolina.

“I believe, ultimately, and I’m predicting and forecasting, that when this gets to the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Supreme Court’s going to rule that this, this particular piece of legislation, is constitutional,” Biggs said.

Trump has appointed a third of the Supreme Court, solidifying a conservative 6-3 majority.

The Supreme Court in 1898 upheld the 14th Amendment’s birthright citizenship provision — which means citizenship is guaranteed to any child born in the country, with the exception of children born to foreign diplomats.

Trump’s Monday executive order that ends birthright citizenship directs the federal government to not recognize or issue citizenship documentation to any child born after Feb. 19 to parents who are in the country without proper authorization, or to children with one parent who is in the United States on a temporary visa and another parent who is a noncitizen.

There are roughly 5.5 million U.S. children born to at least one parent who is an undocumented immigrant and 1.8 million U.S.-born children with two undocumented parents.

Babin’s legislation would make a change to federal immigration law, the Immigration Nationality Act. It says citizenship would be granted to children born in the United States who have at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen, or a green card holder, or an immigrant with a legal status who is serving in the military.

It does not address the potential that some parents could hold a different type of legal immigration status, such as work or student visas. According to the bill text, it would only affect children born after the bill is signed into law — although it’s likely to face immediate legal challenges.

“This is about ensuring the citizenship, a cornerstone of our national identity, that is protected, respected and aligned with the principles upon which this country was built,” Babin said.

A British teenager who killed three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance event was jailed for at least 52 years on Thursday, for an attack Prime Minister Keir Starmer called one of the most harrowing moments in Britain’s history.

Judge Julian Goose said Rudakubana should serve a minimum of 52 years. He said he could not impose a full life sentence as Rudakubana was 17 when the attack took place but he was unlikely ever to be released.

Twice during Thursday’s hearing, Rudakubana was removed from the dock after shouting he was unwell. He refused to return to court to hear his sentence.

The court was shown harrowing video footage of screaming girls fleeing the building. One bloodied girl collapsed outside, provoking gasps and sobs from the court’s public gallery.

“He targeted us because we were women and girls, vulnerable and easy prey,” Leanne Lucas, 36, the yoga teacher who organised the event and was stabbed five times, told the court.

Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, were killed. They were among 26 children attending the summer vacation event.

Two suffered at least 85 and 122 sharp force injuries Heer said, saying it appeared he had tried to decapitate one of them.

After his arrest, Rudakubana told police: “I’m glad those kids are dead, it makes me happy.”

Images and documents found on a computer at his home showed a long obsession with violence, killing and genocide, Heer said.

Rudakubana also admitted possessing an al Qaeda training manual and producing ricin, a deadly poison which the judge said it was likely the teenager would have used.

Heer said the murders were not considered terrorism as Rudakubana was not inspired by any particular political or religious ideology. Material mocking religions including Islam, Judaism and Christianity had been found on his devices.

“It is not possible to identify any particular terrorist cause,” Heer said. “Rather, the evidence suggests that the defendant’s purpose was the commission of mass murder as an end in itself.”

Rudakubana had been diagnosed with autism but his lawyer, Stan Reiz, said he did not have a mental disorder that explained his actions and there was little he could offer in mitigation for “such wickedness”.

Heer said Rudakubana had in 2019 contacted a helpline for children and asked: “What should I do if I want to kill somebody?”

Soon afterwards, he was expelled from school after admitting bringing in a knife 10 times, and was arrested with a knife in his backpack after returning and attacking a pupil with a hockey stick, Heer said.

Rudakubana had been referred to a counter-radicalisation scheme, Prevent, after researching school shootings, uploading images of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to Instagram and researching an attack in London, but no action was taken.

The government has ordered a public inquiry, saying there were grave questions to answer.

“After one of the most harrowing moments in our country’s history we owe it to these innocent young girls and all those affected to deliver the change that they deserve,” Starmer said.

It suggests that the majority of illegal migrants arrived in the UK on work, study or visitor visas and then overstayed.

Migration experts have even warned that the numbers could be even higher as some of the underlying data dates from 2017, before immigration - both legal and illegal - soared under the former Conservative Government.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp - who served in said Government - called the figures "deeply alarming" and has called on Labour to ramp up its deportations.

In a veiled swipe at the ECHR, Philp added: "It is totally unacceptable to have these numbers of illegal immigrants in the UK. The law needs to be looked at so that spurious human rights, modern slavery and asylum claims cannot be used to delay or prevent removals of illegal immigrants."

That sentiment was echoed by Reform UK's migration hardliner MP Rupert Lowe, who said "mass deportations" are now required.

While the party's deputy leader Richard Tice warned: "One in 12 people in London are here illegally - probably working illegally using taxpayer-funded public infrastructure and services. It is totally unacceptable.

"It's another reason why we need to properly control our borders and welcome those who come here legally, but thank those who are here illegally as we return them where they came from."

The Thames Water report, carried out by Edge Analytics and Leeds University data analysts, had aimed to work out how many people truly used its services to enable the water firm to better meet demand.

It based its research on national estimates of illegal migrants from the Pew Research Center in the US, the London School of Economics, and Office for National Statistics data.

It then used National Insurance registrations for non-EU foreign nationals over a nine-year period to estimate the number of so-called "irregular" migrants in each London borough.

For London, the study placed its estimate at a minimum of 390,355 illegal migrants and a maximum of 585,533 at its highest, with a median figure of 487,944.

The capital's estimated population sits at 7,044,667. As a result, one in 12 of the capital's population is an illegal migrant.

When other areas outside London covered by Thames Water are included, like Henley, Guildford, Reading, Swindon and Newbury, the range for the number of illegal migrants rises to between 415,568 to 623,351.

But in the face of this, the Home Office does not publish any full data on the total number of illegal migrants in the UK, while only since 2018 has it publicised figures on the number of migrants crossing the English Channel in small boats.

A Thames Water spokesman said: "Water companies have a regulatory obligation to undertake a 'water balance', which includes understanding how much water our customers use on a per-person basis, and how it is distributed across our supply area.

"Analysis to estimate 'hidden and transient' populations is carried out by an independent firm of consultants, who draw from publicly available sources including census, surveys, and published academic research.

"Thames Water played no part in the writing of the report and the conclusions drawn are those of the independent firm that carried out the research."

A Home Office spokesman said: "This Government is strengthening global partnerships and rooting out the criminal gangs who profit from small boat crossings which threaten lives.

"We have also removed 16,400 illegal migrants in just six months, the highest figure in half a decade, making it clear that those who arrive illegally will be returned."

Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao faces up to 95 years in prison on federal charges

Former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao and three others have been indicted by a federal jury following a corruption investigation, the FBI and US Attorney's Office announced Friday.

The federal charges include bribery, mail fraud and wire fraud.

The three others being indicted are Thao's longtime partner Andre Jones, as well as two prominent East Bay businessmen David Duong and his son Andy Duong.

All four were arraigned Friday morning. Thao pleaded not guilty and faces a maximum of 95 years in prison. She has been released with travel restrictions.

This comes seven months after the FBI raided Thao's home along with several other locations, including properties belonging to the Duong family.

The family holds Oakland's curbside recycling contract with California Waste Solutions and has been the focus of a city probe into campaign contributions.

"As is often the case, the accused left a money trail from their deceptive acts of corruption," says special agent Linda Nguyen with the IRS Oakland field office.

The 22-page indictment alleges that Thao and Jones accepted $95,000 worth of bribes and left a money trail to show for it. ABC7 News video shows Jones arriving to the Oakland Courthouse for his arraignment, and his attorney said he was planning to turn himself in Friday.

Andy Duong also arrived at the same courthouse in a white suit.

Federal prosecutors detailed the indictment at a press conference, saying the illegal scheme began in October 2022, just a month before the mayoral election.

"The indictment charges a scheme the defendants entered into knowing bribes would be offered and accepted by Thao and Jones. In exchange for allowing the Duongs to exercise illegal influence over the levers of city government," explains Patrick Robbins, First Assistant United States Attorney.

The indictment alleges that Thao made commitments to take official action that would benefit the Duongs.That includes an agreement to purchase housing units from a company owned by the Duong family and her agreement to ensure a contract extension that the city of Oakland has with a recycling company owned by the Duongs. It also includes her agreement to use her influence to appoint a high-level city official to benefit the Duongs.

But Thao's lawyer, Jeff Tsai, who spoke after the hearing, claims the evidence in the U.S. government's case is weak.

"The case is built on allegations from an unknown co-conspirator, that we believe when the evidence is reveled, it will show that my client has committed no crimes," says Tsai. "The timing as well is curious. And we think the timing of the event has amplified the politicalization of this issue."

Thao was released on an unsecured $50,000 bond with travel restrictions. Her next court appearance is set for February 6.

Lawyers for David Duong issued a testament to ABC7 News, saying, "Mr. Duong denies wrongdoing and will vigorously defend these allegations in court. He looks forward to prevailing in this case and continuing his decades of service, philanthropy, and devotion to our community and the Bay Area."

Lawyers for Andy responded by saying: "Our client and friend, Andy Duong, is innocent of the charges. We have kept quiet despite the media frenzy of the past months in the hope that the government would correctly come to see through objective investigation that the allegations are baseless, and being fanned by nothing more than gossip and supposition stitched together by the fabrications and delusions of those who lack all fundamental credibility. But disappointingly, Andy instead is today the most recent in a long line of Asian Americans who unfairly are singled out and forced to pay a price for daring to be active in the political sphere. We look forward to clearing his good name before the court and a jury of his peers."

ABC7 News spoke with Thao's former Chief of Staff Renia Webb Thursday night.

"Two years ago, everyone said I was lying and tonight, everyone knows I was telling the truth," Webb said.

She said this moment is a reset for the city of Oakland.

Thao was elected mayor of Oakland in 2022, and was then recalled by voters last fall.

"I'm honestly sad about Sheng. Again, she's a mom. She's very bright and smart. She just made really foolish decisions. She has to deal with the consequences of her actions," Webb said.

In front of cameras days after the raid, former Mayor Thao denied any wrongdoing.

"I want to be crystal clear; I have done nothing wrong, and I can tell you with confidence that this investigation is not about me," Thao said in June 2024.

Webb testified in front of a federal grand jury last month.

"I was informed there was pay-to-play behavior going on. That there was corrupt behavior going on in that administration," Webb said.

Thursday evening, ABC7 News insider Phil Matier says the federal indictment has profound implications.

"For a long time the question was - was she involved or was she just in the room? Did something happen or was it an associate of hers? Was it her live-in boyfriend, is it other people? If this indictment comes out, then what we are saying is we know she was directly involved in some way," Matier said.

He went on to say, "The feds don't mess around. If federal money is involved, they are going to do an investigation. They have zero tolerance for public officials bartering or dealing on the side."

Webb says let this be a lesson to other elected leaders.

"Serve the people in the way you are supposed to with honesty and transparency and if you don't, you are going to get recalled and you might go to jail if you are doing illegal and corrupt stuff," she said.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers advanced a bill Thursday that experts say would establish one of the most restrictive labor laws in the country as Republicans seek to curb the political influence of unions serving teachers and other public service professionals.

The GOP proposal would ban collective bargaining across all of Utah’s public sectors — education, transit, law enforcement and more. It would bar labor unions from negotiating on behalf of workers for better wages and working conditions.

Many educators, the state’s most frequent users of collective bargaining, view the bill as way for Republicans to weaken teachers unions and clear a path for their own education agenda.

“The harm of the bill will be borne by public school educators living and working in every single legislative district,” said Sara Jones of the Utah Education Association. “It sends a message that educators don’t deserve a collective voice in their profession, don’t deserve input on their salaries or working conditions or benefits, or don’t deserve a say in the policies that impact their classrooms.”

Teachers unions are some of the most outspoken opponents of Republican policies in Utah and other states where lawmakers have sought to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs, expand school choice vouchers and restrict transgender bathroom use and sports participation in schools.

A ketchup giant is seeing red after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau brought up its past exit from Canada while discussing a potential Canada-U.S. trade war.

Speaking with reporters after a Wednesday meeting with the premiers, Trudeau urged consumers to seek out Canadian-made products to avoid U.S. imports that could soon be more costly because of retaliatory tariffs.

"That's why we will look, as we have in the past, at things that have replacements for Canadian consumers that wouldn't be tariffed," Trudeau said. "The example from last time was Heinz's ketchup being replaced by French's ketchup because French's was still using Canadian tomatoes in its ketchup."

While it is true that Heinz was not making ketchup in Canada at the time, the company says that changed several years ago.

Kraft Heinz Canada kept nothing bottled up in a statement issued Thursday, saying it is "deeply disappointed" that Trudeau made "misleading statements" about its product.

In 2014, Heinz sold off its hundred-year old tomato processing plant in Leamington, Ont., leaving local farmers and workers in the lurch and setting off a rivalry with French's. But after fierce consumer backlash, Heinz returned to producing ketchup in Canada in 2020.

In its statement, Kraft Heinz says it employs more than 1,000 Canadians at its facility in Mont Royal, Que., and is the largest purchaser of tomatoes in Ontario.

"We were resolute in our decision to bring the production of HEINZ Ketchup back to Canada in 2020 and are proud that HEINZ Ketchup is made in Canada, by Canadians, using Canadian tomatoes," the statement said.

The settlement was announced nearly seven months after the US Supreme Court upended the company’s previous attempt to resolve the lawsuits in a bankruptcy settlement that would have granted the Sacklers sweeping civil immunity from opioid lawsuits in exchange for a payment of up to $6 billion.

The Supreme Court ruled that the Sacklers, who did not file for bankruptcy themselves, were not entitled to legal protections meant to give bankrupt debtors a “fresh start.”

Under the new settlement, the Sacklers will pay $7.4 billion, without fully shutting off lawsuits from states, local governments, or individual victims of the opioid crisis. Those who do not wish to join the settlement are free to pursue lawsuits against the Sacklers, who have said they would vigorously defend themselves in court.

The deal was negotiated by 15 states, including New York, California, Connecticut, Oregon, Texas, Florida and West Virginia. The other states will be asked to sign on the settlement, which must be approved by a US bankruptcy judge before it becomes final.
