Cyrus Vance Jr.

Cyrus Roberts Vance Jr. (born June 14, 1954) is an American attorney and politician who served as the District Attorney of New York County, New York, also known as the Manhattan District Attorney. He was previously a principal partner at the law firm of Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Iason, Anello, & Bohrer, P.C. He is the son of Cyrus Vance Sr., former Secretary of State under President Jimmy Carter. Vance did not seek reelection as District Attorney in the 2021 election, and was succeeded by Alvin Bragg. He is currently a partner at Baker McKenzie.

Early life and education

Vance was born and raised in New York City. He is the son of Grace Elsie (Sloane) and Cyrus R. Vance, who served as Secretary of the Army under presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, Deputy Secretary of Defense under President Johnson, and Secretary of State to President Jimmy Carter.

Vance attended the Buckley and Groton Schools, and then went on to graduate from Yale University. He then earned his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 1982. While in law school, he planned campaign trips for Colorado Senator Gary Hart.

Career/Legal work

Upon graduating from Georgetown, Vance joined the Manhattan District Attorney’s office as an Assistant District Attorney, where he supervised grand jury investigations and prosecuted cases involving murder, organized crime, career criminals, political corruption, international art fraud, and white-collar crime.

In 1988, Vance moved to Seattle because, according to Vance, he wanted to build a name for himself independent of his father's influence. In 1995, Vance co-founded McNaul Ebel Nawrot Helgren & Vance. During this time, Vance taught trial advocacy as an adjunct professor at Seattle University School of Law.

In 2004, Vance returned to New York, where he joined Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Iason, Anello & Bohrer, P.C. as a principal.

Vance is admitted to the bar in New York State, Washington state, and Washington, D.C., and to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. District Courts for the Southern District of New York and Western and Eastern Districts of Washington, and the U.S. Second and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals.

Vance is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America – The New York Area’s Best Lawyers and New York’s Superlawyers – Manhattan Edition.

Jerry Seinfeld meets with freed Israeli hostages, families of captives in Tel Aviv

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld met Monday with several of the hostages freed by Hamas and the families of those still held captive in Gaza.

The 69-year-old “Seinfeld” actor — who worked on a kibbutz in Israel as a teen — arrived in Tel Aviv with his wife Jessica to attend an event held by the Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum, where he spoke with the former hostages and relatives for hours to show his support over their plight.

“Seinfeld told the families that he feels a deep commitment to raising awareness around the world about the issue of the hostages,” the forum said in a statement.

The organization said those in attendance “thank the Seinfeld family for their moving visit to the families’ headquarters and their unwavering support for the families of the hostages.”

At the event, the comedian was seen wearing a “Bring them home” dog tag around his neck, a symbol of solidarity for the nearly 130 hostages that remain captive in Gaza.

Seinfeld went on to join a group Tuesday morning visiting Kibbutz Be’eri, one of the villages destroyed by Hamas on Oct. 7, as well as the location of the Nova rave, where more than 300 people were slaughtered.

The Jewish American comedian has said he worked on a kibbutz when he was 16 and that he will “always stand with Israel and the Jewish people.”

After the terrorist attack that killed more than 1,200 people, Seinfeld joined hundreds of celebrities to condemn the attacks as an act of “evil.

“There is no justification or rationalization for Hamas’ actions,” the actors’ letter read. “These are barbaric acts of terrorism that must be called out by everyone.”

While the former hostages and families of those still held captive appeared thrilled to meet with Seinfeld, they are much less pleased with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is set to meet with a group of only 15 of them Tuesday.

The group has expressed frustration that only a chosen few of them get to meet with Netanyahu in Tel Aviv, claiming the others are repeatedly being left out of the loop, The Times of Israel said.

A previous meeting with the former hostages and the families of those held captive saw the prime minister and his war cabinet grilled over the stalled negotiations to free all those still being held.

The Jewish state believes that there are still 128 hostages in Gaza, not all of them alive, after a weeklong truce agreement that resulted in 105 captives being freed.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog claimed Tuesday that his nation was prepared for a second pause in fighting — as long as Hamas adheres to the agreed-upon rules — during a meeting with ambassadors from 80 countries. The previous cease-fire was fueled by the release of Hamas hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, as well as increased humanitarian aid flowing into war-torn Gaza.

“I can reiterate the fact that Israel is ready for another humanitarian pause and additional humanitarian aid in order to enable the release of hostages. And the responsibility lies fully with [Yahya] Sinwar and the leadership of Hamas,” Herzog told the ambassadors.

Oil prices bounced once again today to two week highs as tensions in the Red Sea stoked worries over potential supply disruptions.

The "longer-term impact on oil prices of Houthis' attacks on oil tankers through the Red Sea is a complicated one, but the attacks do have immediate repercussions: delay in delivery of crude and higher shipping costs," said Fawad Razaqzada, market analyst at City Index and FOREX.com, in emailed commentary.

Given that, "the oil price gains are justified," he said in market commentary.

Still, it's "very difficult to say how long the gains will last for, or how much higher will prices go from here on, just on the back of this factor alone."

API reported a 939k barrel crude inventory build, ending the streak of draws (and opposite to the expectations. Stockpiles at the Cushing Hub rose for the 9th week in a row and products also saw builds. WTI was hovering around $74.25 ahead of the API print and limped lower after the unexpected build. Despite the current rally, some traders don’t anticipate long-term price impacts for crude, and timespreads - a critical barometer for supply and demand - continue to indicate weakness.

WTI’s prompt spread, the difference between its January and February contracts, settled at 50 cents in contango, signaling an abundance of barrels available in the near term.

"As the holiday season approaches, a stable outcome for the region looks elusive," said Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management, in market commentary.

"The longer the war in Gaza rages on, the escalating humanitarian crisis may intensify political pressure on various actors, potentially leading to an expansion of the conflict."

And "in the midst of rocket attacks and bombings, the fog of war increases the likelihood of unpredictable events and significant miscalculations, potentially resulting in further escalation," said Innes.

Comcast's Xfinity says there was unauthorized access to its internal systems between Oct. 16 and Oct. 19.

Comcast told TechCrunch that Xfinity, which provides video, broadband and phone services, had been exploited by hackers through a critical-rated security vulnerability and accessed the sensitive information of almost 36 million customers.

The companhy said it had notified federal law enforcement and started an investigation.

The unauthorized access led to customer information that was "likely acquired," including usernames, hashed passwords, contact details and last four digits of social security numbers, the company said.

The company said the software-related risk has been resolved.

Data analysis for the breach, first detected on Oct. 25 during a routine cybersecurity exercise, is still ongoing.

Tesla to raise pay for hourly Nevada Gigafactory workers in January — move could stave off union interest

Tesla has informed workers at its battery factory in Sparks, Nevada, that some set-rate hourly workers there will see pay increases around 10% starting in early January 2024.

According to internal materials seen by CNBC, and workers at the plant who were informed of “cost of living adjustments,” Tesla will bump hourly workers from $20 to $22 an hour on the low end, and from $30.65 up to $34.50 an hour on the high end. It’s also streamlining some levels, so that several levels of worker making between $26.20 and $30.65 an hour today will be adjusted to $34.50 an hour, for instance.

The adjustments also represent a 10% or greater raise for most hourly workers, adding anywhere from $2 to $8.30 an hour to their pay.

The pay increases may help Tesla stave off workers’ interest in forming a union and pushing for a collective agreement in Nevada. Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the raises.

The United Auto Workers won record contracts after contentious negotiations and U.S. labor strikes with General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler-parent Stellantis earlier this year. As CNBC previously reported, UAW President Shawn Fain repeatedly said he plans to take that fight from Detroit automakers to Tesla, Toyota Motor and other non-unionized automakers operating in the U.S.

In late October, workers at Tesla service and collision repair centers in Sweden touched off a labor strike that has now spread to Denmark, Finland and Norway and includes workers involved in shipping, waste management and providing other services to Tesla. In recent weeks, one of Denmark’s largest pension funds announced that it would sell its holdings of Tesla stock over the U.S. giant’s refusal to enter into agreements with labor unions.

The EV maker’s promise of a significant cost of living adjustment for workers at the Nevada Gigafactory also comes as Tesla faces increased competition for talent, and as CEO Elon Musk touches off one controversy after another via public speaking engagements and posts on X, formerly Twitter, the social media platform he acquired late last year.

Former Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao has been ordered to pay $150 million, while Binance will pay $2.7 billion to conclude the CFTC enforcement action.

A United States court has entered an order against crypto exchange Binance and its former CEO, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, that will see Binance pay $2.7 billion and CZ pay $150 million to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

In a Dec. 18 statement, the CFTC announced that the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois had approved the previously announced settlement and concluded the enforcement action first issued by the CFTC in November.

“The court finds Zhao and Binance violated the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and CFTC regulations, imposes a $150 million civil monetary penalty personally against Zhao, and requires Binance to disgorge $1.35 billion of ill-gotten transaction fees and pay a $1.35 billion penalty to the CFTC,” wrote the CFTC in a statement.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is currently imprisoned, has used artificial intelligence to deliver a speech to his supporters. The four-minute address was broadcast during a ‘virtual rally’ attended by more than 4.5 million people across Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.

Pakistani authorities have clamped down on gatherings organized by Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party since he was briefly arrested for the first time in May. The former prime minister was sentenced to three years behind bars in August for illegally selling state gifts. The 71-year-old faces a slew of other charges, all of which he claims are politically motivated.

According to PTI representatives, the cricket-star-turned-politician wrote a script for the speech and passed it on to his supporters through lawyers. Meanwhile, the NetBlocks watchdog reported that it had detected disruptions in social media availability in Pakistan, starting late on Sunday. The group alleged that this may have been due to deliberate “internet censorship.”

Khan was charged by a special court in October with breaching state secrecy laws over an alleged conspiracy to reveal what he characterized as proof of US interference in orchestrating his removal from power last year.

The diplomatic cable at the center of the case was sent by then-Pakistani Ambassador to the US Asad Majeed Khan after his meeting with two senior US State Department officials in March 2022. According to multiple media reports purportedly based on the document, Washington made clear that it was unhappy about Khan’s failure to toe the West’s line. The US officials allegedly hinted to the Pakistani diplomat that if the prime minister lost an impending no-confidence vote in parliament, “all will be forgiven in Washington.”

Khan was ousted about a month after the meeting, and has since mounted a major protest campaign.

While the US has denied exerting any pressure on Pakistan, the International Monetary Fund unexpectedly extended a $3 billion bailout for Islamabad in July – a decision that The Intercept has claimed was influenced by Washington.

CIA pushing to resume Hamas talks – media

Washington had previously blamed the Palestinian group for the end of a week-long truce to facilitate a prisoner-hostage exchange

CIA director Bill Burns held talks with Israeli and Qatari officials in Warsaw on Monday as part of a renewed effort to restart hostage and prisoner exchanges between Israel and Hamas, media reports say.

Burns met with the head of Israel’s Mossad spy agency, David Barnea, and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, the Wall Street Journal said, citing officials familiar with the talks. Barnea has been leading Israel’s hostage negotiation efforts, while the Qataris – who host Hamas’ political wing in its capital, Doha – have been facilitating talks between the two warring sides.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q. Brown also held talks with officials in Israel on Monday. The Wall Street Journal notes that this is part of the Biden administration’s “intense focus” on resolving the crisis in Gaza.

Health officials in the besieged enclave say that more than 19,000 people have died so far in Israel’s bombardment of the enclave, while Israel claims that about 1,200 people died in Hamas’ cross-border attack on October 7 and around 200 hostages were seized during the assault.

Discussions over the release of Hamas hostages have been brought into sharper focus in recent days after Israel’s military forces said on Friday that its soldiers had accidentally killed three unarmed men later confirmed to have been hostages in Gaza.

In a week-long truce last month, Hamas freed 105 hostages in exchange for the release of 240 Palestinians being held in Israeli prisons. However, negotiations broke down and the war resumed on December 1. Agreeing on terms for future exchanges has proven to be difficult, the New York Times said on Monday, citing comment from US officials.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken earlier this month blamed Hamas for the resumption of the conflict, saying that the Palestinian militant group “reneged on commitments it had made.” Hamas blamed the end of the truce on Israeli air strikes.

Egyptian officials, meanwhile, have said that Hamas has told its negotiators that it is willing to permit the release of more hostages provided that aid to Gaza is doubled, the Wall Street Journal reported. Hamas’ terms also include Israel announcing a ceasefire and withdrawing its forces to an agreed line, the report adds.

Hamas is also seeking the release from Israel of high profile Palestinian prisoners, such as Marwan Barghouti – a leader of the Fatah faction serving five life sentences for the murder of Israelis in the 2000s, the WSJ said.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari, though, said on Sunday that Hamas’ calls for a cessation of its ground operation will not distract from the IDF’s goal to “dismantle Hamas.”

The J6 ‘pipe bomber’ planted the, contrary to media reports and even Congressional testimony, what were for all practical purposes, as assembled, basically inert devices around 7-8 pm ET. The one hour kitchen timers were simply not capable of detonating either device some 17 hours later.

The individual, was wearing Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes in yellow, black, and gray. Having originally arrived blocks away in a white unmarked panel van. Returning the next morning around 5 am in what appears to be the same white panel van, the van was seen following one of the infamous ‘ghost buses’ that were circling the Capital dropping off individuals.

We are not 100% certain this photo contains the same white panel van, as there were more than one. For example, there is video out there, showing individuals dressed in black ‘ninja’ like outfits that exited two of those white vans which immediately began cutting fencing and disabling certain barricades.

Later we tracked the same individual to a Virginia Metro station where they drove away in a vehicle. The license plate was captured on video and was provided to the FBI and the U.S. Capitol Police.

Humzah Mashkoor, 18, of Westminster, Colorado, is charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization and made his initial appearance in federal court today.

According to court documents, Mashkoor was arrested on Monday, Dec. 18 at the Denver International Airport before he could board a flight for the first leg of an overseas trip. According to the affidavit in support of the criminal complaint, Mashkoor was traveling to the United Arab Emirates, where he intended to stay until he continued on to either Afghanistan or Syria to serve as a fighter for ISIS.

The FBI Denver Field Office is investigating this case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Laura Cramer-Babycz for the District of Colorado is prosecuting the case, with the assistance of Jennifer Levy of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section.

GREENTOWN, Ind. — The Howard County Coroner confirmed that Thursday's double shooting was a murder-suicide.

Autopsies conducted Sunday determined Aimee Romero was killed by a gunshot to her neck, and her husband, Richard Romero, died from a self-inflicted shot to the head.

Police said their bodies were found in a home in the 7500 block of East 300 South around 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Deputies were responding to a welfare check at the home when they found 51-year-old Richard "Chase" Romero and 43-year-old Aimee Romero, both of Greentown.

Tohono O’odham partners with wireless internet provider to connect tribal citizens

Tohono O’odham citizens now have access to wireless internet options thanks toa partnership the Tohono O’odham Utility Authority established with Baicells Technologiesto provide high-speed broadband connectivity to villages across the largely rural Tohono O’odham Nation.

“Understanding our remote location and lack of service by any existing carriers, we knew it was up to us to address this issue of broadband access,” Kristan Johnson, the operations manager for the Tohono O’odham Utility Authority (TOUA), said in a press release. TOUA has been offering internet services since 1998.

The Tohono O’odham Nation is 4,460 square miles, about the size of Connecticut, and roughly 28,000 Tohono O’odham people live on its tribal lands in southwestern Arizona.

The Tohono O’odham Nation is divided into 11 districts that are made up of 72 villages. Due to the rural conditions, the tribe has faced challenges bringing access to high-speed internet in many parts of tribal land.

The tribe has largely relied on simple WiFi connectivity set up in limited locations, and residents relied on internet speeds as low as 2 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload, which often left the community unable to access critical service.

With the help of federal funding, the TOUA has been able to overhaul and upgrade its infrastructure, and has been able to build out its network plan through wireless connection.

TOUA reached out to Baicells to partner with them to get the network established, but according to the press release, the tribe is the one behind the wheel because they planned, deployed and now operate the network.

“We have experience and a track record of solving these types of challenges for our communities,” Johnson said. “A private network that we can manage on our own was a great fit since we are very accustomed to operating our own infrastructure.”

The TOUA already operates key utility infrastructures like electricity and water, Johnson said.

“In today’s age, internet access is just another utility,” she added.

The tribe launched its project to build the wireless network in 2020, according to the press release, and started testing Baicells technology in 2021. Since then, the tribe successfully deployed a dual-band private 4G LTE network.

Johnson said that they are still working to build out a fiber optic network, which is expected to be completed in 2024, and the wireless system allows customers to have access to the internet until then.

The Tohono O’odham Nation has approximately 50 base stations set up across its land, and it has the potential to serve an estimated 3,000 homes.

“The primary objective of this initiative is to enhance communications and access to content and educational services, with the high-speed connectivity provided by this network,” Minchul Ho, Americas CEO at Baicells, said in a press release.

According to Baicells, the Tohono O’odham Nation is able to maintain tribal sovereignty over its network infrastructure by leveraging a private LTE network.

The Tohono O’odham Utility Authority was interested in getting service across the community sooner rather than later, said Tony Eigen, vice president of global marketing for Baicells.

“They knew they could do this with a wireless kind of network,” Eigen said, and Baicells is helping the Tribe get connected through the wireless technology they provide.

Eigen said Baicells went out to the Tohono O’odham Nation this summer to work with the TOUA to set up more towers in their network, and the tribes’ choice to go wireless gave them the ability to get their communities connected faster.

Since the project launched, Eigen said they’ve been able to cover a large portion of the community, unlike fiber optics, which takes longer to build out and costs much more.

Customers will have a transmitter set up on their house that talks to the radio transmitters and then broadcasts WiFi in the house, Eigden said, which is vastly different from digging and laying down fiber cables.

For example, a mile of fiber costs roughly $5,000, but connecting a similar amount of endpoints using wireless networks costs only about $500.

“The cost is very much based on the population density that you’re trying to serve,” he added. “There is major differences in those two approaches.”

Qualcomm Ventures has invested in Baicells, a company that produces small cells that help strengthen wireless signals in dense metro areas.

Qualcomm led a $15 million investment round into the wireless technology company, Baicells announced Jan. 3.

Originally based in Beijing, Baicells was founded by former Huawei Technologies fellow Lixin Sun.The company moved its headquarters to Plano, Texas, in May, bringing it closer to many of its telecommunications partners.

The company will use the additional investment to further develop its 5G technologies, Sun said in a news release. Small cells will be particularly important as carriers deploy their 5G networks; more infrastructure is needed as consumers transmit growing amounts of data.

As 5G technologies become more prevalent in propelling radio access network (RAN) capabilities, the question remains, how can this technology be made more accessible worldwide? For the past seven years, Baicells has been working to bring high-speed internet to organizations and end-users across the world, including areas lacking internet connectivity. MyPillow founder Mike Lindell unveiled his long-hyped plan to catch supposed election thieves red-handed on Thursday—and it may get you arrested in multiple states, municipalities, and federal aviation zones.

Lindell, a linen salesman-turned-conspiracy theorist, remains one of the loudest promoters of election fraud hoaxes. Some of those false claims are at the center of a new indictment against Donald Trump and a suite of associates, who are accused of a criminal conspiracy centered around their attempts to overturn Trump’s 2020 presidential loss in Georgia.

Undeterred, Lindell is moving forward with a new scheme for future elections. During a Thursday event, he flew a drone-mounted device into a conference center and described it as a new technology designed to search polling sites for suspicious WiFi.

The operator-led nature of the O-RAN Alliance is one of the features that sets it apart from some of its industry counterparts. Today, there are over 200 members in the O-RAN Alliance comprising network operators, academic institutions, and equipment manufacturers and vendors. However, each of its working groups is chaired by a network operator and works on technical specifications to further the basic tenets defined by the O-RAN Alliance.These tenets are centered around using virtualized RAN components with open and interoperable interfaces, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware, and a cloud platform layer across the RAN domain.

The U.S. Senate on Dec. 19 voted to confirm eleven senior officers to become four-star generals and admirals, including two Space Force leaders, Gen. Michael Guetlein and Gen. Stephen Whiting.

The Senate vote came as the chamber delayed the holiday recess to work on a number of issues. The confirmations of Guetlein and Whiting, along with the promotions of hundreds of other officers, faced an unforeseen delay of nearly six months as a result of Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) blocking military promotions in protest of the Pentagon’s policy of reimbursing travel costs for troops seeking abortions.

The Senate on Dec. 5 confirmed 421 senior military promotions. However, that release did not cover 11 top generals and flag officers who had been nominated to receive a fourth star.

The hold created a period of uncertainty and operational constraints, the Pentagon said. After his Senate colleagues persistently pressured Tuberville to drop the protest, the blockade was lifted Dec. 19.

Both Guetlein and Whiting were nominated for their new posts in July.

Guetlein is poised to succeed now-retired Gen. David “DT” Thompson as vice chief of space operations of the U.S. Space Force.

Guetlein since 2019 served as commander of the Space Force’s acquisition arm, the Space Systems Command, based in Los Angeles. The new leader of Space Systems Command is Lt. Gen. Philip Garrant.

“Each of these leaders is highly qualified. They have dedicated their lives and careers to serving and defending our nation. They deserve our respect and gratitude, and I am pleased the Senate worked together to get them confirmed.”

Gen. Stephen Whiting will assume the top post at U.S. Space Command, a Defense Department combatant command that oversees military operations in the space domain. Whiting since October 2020 served as commander of the Space Operations Command, a Space Force organization at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, that oversees the organization and equipping of Space Force units.

Whiting replaces U.S. Army Gen. James Dickinson as head of Space Command. He takes over amid a political fight over the permanent location of the command’s headquarters. The battle started when then-President Trump in his final days in office selected Huntsville, Alabama, as the headquarters’ location. The Biden administration ultimately reversed course and opted to keep Space Command in Colorado. This decision drew criticism from Alabama lawmakers who continue to challenge the decision.

SELLS, Ariz. — There's a new push to bring reliable high-speed internet to a part of Arizona that's never had it before.

Using federal CARES Act funding, the Tohono O'odham Nation built its own private cellular network.

“The goal is really to blanket the entire reservation with coverage," Baicells Vice President of Global Marketing Tony Eigen said.

The network consists of about 50 base stations that can send 4G LTE service to about 3,000 homes, according to Baicells, the equipment distributor.

"They can do video streaming, video calls, access to lots of content," Eigen said. "They view it as a critical asset to help serve their community."

As a remote location with a lack of service from existing carriers, the Tohono O'odham Utility Authority Operations Manager Kristan Johnson said a private network is most manageable within its infrastructure.

"We already do this for other key utilities like electricity and water and in today’s age, internet access is just another utility," Johnson said in a press release.

Eigen said a private network will also allow the nation to have authority over the service.

Connecting homes is just the start of this plan.

“They’re very much looking at how else the network can serve the community," Eigen said.

Experts said high-speed internet will improve emergency services, telehealth, remote learning and business opportunities.

The equipment has the ability to evolve with the nation as demand grows, including upgrading to 5G service.

Long before the COVID-19 pandemic, students across the U.S. flocked to McDonalds and Starbucks, not for the food and drink, but to utilize publicly-available Wi-Fi to complete their online schoolwork. A lack of internet connectivity for students is a growing concern that was highlighted by the pandemic; bringing attention to the severe lack of internet access that many school-aged children faced daily. Therein lies the ‘homework gap’: the divide between students who have home broadband access and those without.

According to 2020 research from the National Education Association, 25% of all K-12 students live in households without broadband access or a web-enabled device (such as a computer or tablet). The acceleration of digital adoption we have seen in the past two years has exacerbated the issue that the digital divide presents, and it has become more critical than ever before to close this connectivity gap. So, how do we address this?

Move over Wi-Fi, private networks are the new (school) kid on the block

Many school districts are tired of waiting for the carriers to provide reliable cellular for fixed wireless connectivity and are taking matters into their own hands. Getting fiber broadband to every school and home in a school district can be very expensive and time-consuming. Coverage from Wi-Fi is often patchy and does not provide widespread coverage in a way that is easy to manage.

Taking matters into their own hands; school districts are now opting to build private LTE networks using CBRS to extend connectivity for students. CBRS provides sought-after mid-band spectrum (recognized widely as the sweet spot between coverage reach and internet speed) for a variety of users, including private organizations like schools.

Private LTE networks are being built by school districts across the country as an attractive alternative to legacy solutions like Wi-Fi, or even connectivity services from traditional carriers. These private cellular networks can outperform Wi-Fi for in-building and outdoor coverage; providing both broader and faster connectivity. These private wireless networks are designed to be as easy to install, due to the “plug-and-play” CPE equipment and management software. And thanks to low-cost hardware and the availability of CBRS spectrum, these solutions are now an economical and viable solution for schools across the US.

Bizarre Fast Radio Burst Exhibits a Unique Signal Never Seen Before

A mystery signal from the depths of the cosmos has just been caught doing something we've never seen before.

In the midst of the emission of a repeating fast radio burst, scientists have detected a drop in the center frequency of the signals over time – a drop that sounds, they say, like a cosmic slide-whistle when slowed down and played on a xylophone.

It's unclear exactly what this unique drop in frequency means, yet – aside from the fact that fast radio bursts continue to be weird, and to defy easy explanation.

"This work is exciting because it provides both confirmation of known FRB properties and the discovery of some new ones," says radio astronomer Sofia Sheikh of the SETI Institute.

"We're narrowing down the source of FRBs, for example, to extreme objects such as magnetars, but no existing model can explain all of the properties that have been observed so far."

Fast radio bursts, or FRBs, are very strange, but very nifty. As the name suggests, they're bursts of radio emission that are very fast: each burst lasts just a few microseconds to seconds.

They're really powerful, discharging in that short space of time as much energy as 500 million Suns. And they're a bit tricky to catch: most FRBs have only been caught flaring once, a strange, unpredictable spike in radio survey data.

That unpredictability and failure to repeat has made them difficult to study (although not impossible – great strides have been made in tracing and analyzing the one-off signals).

But a handful of FRB sources do something a bit different: they flare again and again, a strange staccato spatter of signals that sometimes follows a pattern, and sometimes doesn't.

These repeat sources are an opportunity to trace the source of an FRB with high precision, but also to plan for, and study in detail, signals from a single source.

This is what Sheikh and her colleagues have done, homing in on a source known as FRB 20220912A, coming from another galaxy around a billion light-years away.

They analyzed 541 hours of observation data from the Allen Telescope Array, and extracted a total of 35 bursts, with an average duration of 1.2 milliseconds.

They then stretched out these signals, and studied how the emission from the source changes over time. There were some characteristics that the FRB 20220912A bursts shared in common with other FRBs, such as a downward frequency drift, a link between the signal bandwidth and center frequency, and changes in burst duration over time.

The researchers looked for patterns in the propagation of the bursts, and found none. FRB 20220912A appears to be one of the repeaters that does so at random. But the signals it spits out are pretty interesting.

Over the two months the bursts were scattered, the researchers also noticed a drop in the center frequency of the bursts. Here's what that sounds like, when the data is translated into musical notes on a xylophone.

What we don't know is why this drop occurs, but it could be information that helps scientists figure out where FRBs are coming from.

Evidence suggests that at least some FRBs are emitted by magnetars, but we don't yet know if that's the case for all FRBs, or if there's a different magnetar behavior behind different types of FRBs. Although we're getting closer to answers, we're far from a comprehensive description of how these signals are created.

Finding strange behaviors brings us closer, even when we can't quite explain them yet. None of the behavior noted in FRB 20220912A favor or rule out any models of FRB creation and propagation, but it does provide a benchmark against which future observations can be compared, the researchers say.

The discovery also highlights the importance of instruments such as the Allen Telescope Array, which has the ability to record a wide range of bandwidths as it studies the sky. This reveals behaviors that might not be picked up by instruments that have a narrower focus.

"More observations of the source," the researchers write, "especially at higher frequencies with instruments like the ATA, will help to differentiate between the various classes of FRB progenitor models."

Three main points before getting to the substance. [213 page opinion HERE]

#1) It was a 4-3 decision. Meaning it was the politics of the court, literally the political makeup and perspective therein, that determined the outcome of the decision. This is showcased in point #3, which is the funniest part.

#2) The entire framework of the case against Trump in the Colorado decision is predicated on this: “[the complainants] asserted that he was ineligible under Section Threebecause he engaged in insurrection on January 6, 2021, after swearing an oath as President to support the U.S. Constitution.” [pdf, page 6] REMINDER – President Donald Trump was not charged with “insurrection,” is not accused of “insurrection,” does not fit the complaint under the definitions of “insurrection,” and has never been found guilty of insurrection.The complaint is moot before the court. But hey, it’s Lawfare… and we all know Lawfare is created for public media consumption, so that takes us directly to the biggest point.

#3) Instead of me writing it, let me screengrab it so we can all laugh together [pdf page 9].

Wait, what?

Yes, that’s correct. As long as President Trump appeals the decision to the Supreme Court, the appeals court stays their own ruling – essentially indefinitely. The Colorado primary ballots printed, andthe primary election will be over, before the Supreme Court puts this on their docket.

In addition to the virtual guarantee the high court will overrule this political nonsense, SCOTUS can make the entire issue moot before them by following their own normal schedule for submissions, arguments, deliberation and opinions delivered by the court.

The Colorado appellate court knows this, that’s why they put this self-stay into their 4-3 ruling. It’s a politically correct way of giving the optics of telling their tribe, ‘hey we’re with you,’ without the ramifications of the political backlash. In other words,psychological lawfare stuff – intended for media consumption.

Making the issue that much better for Donald Trump, theefforts of the Prescott-Bush clan (look it up – they live in CO) will backfire bigly. The public backlash against a judicial ruling that interferes with the right of the citizens to determine their own election candidates plays perfectly into the sunlight operation against the Lawfare left.

This backlash will be epic, albeit hidden by MSNBC and the rest of the insufferable media. Why? Because it doesn’t fit the Lawfare narrative.

I’m not even going to highlight the nonsense from the leftists who are in a frenzy over this one. Just smile, pretend it’s the end of the world, eat your favorite foods and live your best life while trying not to laugh.Seriously, this is just that level of goofy.

Remember what I said about Ron DeSantis in 2022, and everyone looked at me funny. Well, this is way more predictable than me saying DeSantis will collapse in sunlight.

That said, Vivek Ramaswamy is not silly, and he sees a great opportunity.

NASA is participating in a meeting of the National Space Council on Wednesday, Dec. 20, in Washington. The meeting, chaired by Vice President Kamala Harris, will focus on international partnerships and is the third council meeting held by the Biden-Harris Administration.

NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy and Artemis II and CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen will represent the agency at the meeting, which also includes other federal government agencies.

NASA will provide coverage of the meeting at 2 p.m. EST on the NASA+ streaming service via the web or NASA app. Coverage also will air live on NASA Television, the NASA app, YouTube, and the agency’s website. Learn how to stream NASA TV through a variety of platforms including social media.

Deputy Administrator Melroy will provide remarks that will focus on the societal benefits of NASA’s space exploration, including the agency’s Earth science missions that provide open and transparent climate data for all people. Blue Origin is back in action after a 15-month hold on launches.

Blue Origin successfully launched its first mission in more than 15 months on Tuesday (Dec. 19) after a series of delays, with an uncrewed manifest of NASA scientific payloads making it to space.

Blue Origin's New Shepard suborbital vehicle lifted off from the company's West Texas site on Tuesday around 11:44 a.m. EST (1644 GMT) after brief holds on launch day. (Blue Origin also tried to launch the mission on Monday (Dec. 18), but scrubbed the attempt due to a "ground system issue" at its Launch Site One pad.)

The first stage of the rocket touched down nearby its launching site, as planned, and the spacecraft descended to Earth under parachutes in a livestream from Blue Origin. New Shepard is designed for both tourists and payloads, but the next flight with humans has not yet been announced.

Like the September 2022 flight, today's mission — known as NS-24, because it will be the 24th overall liftoff for New Shepard — was uncrewed. It carried 33 research payloads, more than half of them "developed and flown with support from NASA," Blue Origin wrote in a mission description.

"Others come from K-12 schools, universities, and STEAM-focused organizations," they added. (STEAM stands for "science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.")

Today's flight will also tote 38,000 postcards for Club for the Future, a nonprofit founded by Blue Origin that aims to get young people interested in space science and exploration.

While Blue Origin has not yet released its first launch date with humans on board, it is getting ready to fly a wider variety of customers. Launch commentators pointed out an elevator added to the launch tower, in a collaboration with accessibility company AstroAccess. (The company's founder, Dylan Taylor, was a Blue Origin customer himself on NS-19 on Dec. 11, 2021.)

"We have added an elevator; accessibility is really important here at Blue," launch commentator Erica Wagner said on the livestream.

Blue Origin's main competitor for space tourism, Virgin Galactic, has flown several missions in recent months. But Virgin is expected to pause its own monthly flight pace soon to upgrade its fleet. Once the upgrade is finished, Virgin may fly as frequently as once per month.

Federal judges have sided with the Bavarian government in its litigation against an atheist group

The authorities in Bavaria have the right to demand that Christian crosses be placed in all government buildings, the German Federal Administrative Court – one of the nation’s five federal supreme courts – ruled on Tuesday. The decision followed a row between regional officials and an association of atheists.

Led by Markus Soeder – the head of the region’s most powerful political force, the Conservative Christian Social Union (CSU) – the Bavarian government introduced the rule in 2018. At that time, the authorities ordered Christian crosses to be placed over the entrances of all government buildings to reflect the state’s “cultural identity as well as Christian [and] Western influence.”

The southern German state had previously enacted similar rules for public schools and courtrooms, making cross displays compulsory. Soeder also took a particularly tough stance on migration and sought to streamline asylum procedures in the state.

The 2018 decision was met with criticism by atheist associations and religious leaders alike.The Catholic Church accused Soeder of misusing Christian symbols to score cheap political points.An atheist association known as the ‘Union for Mental Freedom’ claimed that the decision violated its right to freedom of thought, and took the matter to court in 2021.

The union had its first legal complaint dismissed by a lower court, prompting it to turn to the Federal Administrative Court. “What does a cross have to do with an official activity, with the issuing of a driving license? Nothing!”a lawyer for the organization argued during the trial.

Federal judges, however, considered the Bavarian authorities’ decision to be a “mere administrative provision with no legal external effect,” which did not “violate any rights of the plaintiffs.” The court acknowledged that the cross isperceived as the central symbol of the Christian faith, but said its display does not infringe upon any guarantees of freedom.

Soeder welcomed the decision by saying the cross is “a sign of our Christian and cultural nature,” adding that it “belongs to Bavaria.”The leader of the CSU faction in the regional parliament, Klaus Holetschek, also praised the developmentby saying “’yes’ to our values and ‘yes’ to the Christian-Western nature of our country.”TheUnion for Mental Freedomhas vowed to challenge the ruling at the German Constitutional Court. (They sure are afraid of the Cross! Demanding mental freedom is not guaranteed in any constitution and its impossible to implement.)
