CNN first reported Friday on the mystery, which remains unsolved nearly three years after Trump left office. Investigative Reporter Lee Fang: NewsGuard Demands News Orgs Conform to Government Narratives

NewsGuard, a for-profit company that rates news websites and works closely with government agencies and major corporate advertisers, demands news websites follow government narratives, according to investigative reporter Lee Fang.

While there is no official ban on talking about, for example, the efficacy of coronavirus vaccines, editors and journalists understand that writing about such issues can result in consequences, such as demonetization and shadow-banning, due to the Orwellian existence of a network of government agencies and groups claiming to combat so-called “misinformation” repressing online speech, according to independent journalist Lee Fang in the New York Post.

NewsGuard’s business model is based on being a so-called misinformation meter. It rates news websites on a scale of 0 to 100 on an array of factors, such as headline choice and whether the website publishes “false or egregiously misleading content.”

According to Fang, while this may appear to some as an objective public service, these ratings are a way to coerce conformity, as they give NewsGuard the power to smear an entire website as untrustworthy if it strays from the government narrative.

In one example, the libertarian-leaning British website, the Daily Sceptic, received a 74.5 rating from NewsGuard. The Daily Sceptic editor Toby Young reportedly reached out to NewsGuard in a series of emails over the last two years trying to improve the site’s rating, only to be downgraded further after adding postscripts to articles, rather than retracting the articles completely.

NewsGuard had taken issue with the Daily Sceptic’s criticism of lockdowns, in which the site called them “unnecessary, ineffective and harmful” and cited academic literature on the topic, Fang reported.

To appease NewsGuard, Young added postscripts to his articles, noting the issues raised by the so-called “fact-checkers,” and providing additional information. As a result, NewsGuard further dropped Young’s rating to 37.5. NewsGuard wanted the articles retracted, not further research on the harmful effects of lockdowns to be added to the articles.

In an email to one of its government clients, NewsGuard reportedly bragged that its ratings system is used by advertisers, “which will cut off revenues to fake news sites.”

NewsGuard, founded in 2018, works closely with corporate advertisers. One of its largest investors is the Publicis Groupe, which is the largest marketing agency in the world. But to Fang, what is even more concerning is NewsGuard’s ties to the government.

The Japanese government on Friday said the average number of influenza patients at thousands of designated medical institutions nationwide had hit warning levels at their fastest pace in 10 years. Across roughly 5,000 institutions, 166,690 patients had been reported in the week through Dec. 10, averaging 33.72 people per facility and surpassing the warning level of 30, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. The National Institute of Infectious Diseases estimated that the number of patients nationwide totaled around 1,118,000 during the same period. The rapid spread reflects lowered influenza immunity after cases had dropped in recent years amid anti-infection measures implemented against the coronavirus pandemic. Health experts say that fewer people have immunity against influenza since restrictions over the COVID-19 were lifted earlier this year, and that the influenza virus is spreading about a month earlier than normal. Coronavirus cases have also been increasing for the third consecutive week, authorities said. Experts have called for caution amid fears both viruses could spread further as year-end and New Year's social gatherings take place in Japan. School-wide and class-specific closures have taken place at 6,382 educational facilities nationwide in the week through Sunday, the ministry said. While influenza outbreaks typically occur in winter and the end of spring, this year saw an unusual increase in cases from August. The ministry cautioned against the flu in October when cases exceeded the advisory level for that month of 10 people per institution.”Individual measures for preventing infection are the same as those for COVID-19, including getting vaccinated, wearing masks, and avoiding crowded places," said Nobuhiko Okabe, head of the Kawasaki City Institute for Public Health.

Bank Loan Volumes Shrink As Deposits Rise, But Trouble Is Brewing.

Yesterday we discovered that Regional bank shares have been soaring up towards pre-SVB levels despite yet another increase to a new record high in the usage of The Fed's bank bailout facility (now at $124BN)...[and as a reminder those funds from BTFP are one year term-see below]. We also saw the first aggregate outflow from money-market funds in seven weeks.

And so, with all that in mind, we shift attention to bank balance sheets as The Fed attempts to manufacture data on loans and deposits to ensure we don't panic.

On a seasonally-adjusted basis, total bank deposits rose by $28.4BN, after falling $54BN the prior week. On a non-seasonally-adjusted basis, total bank deposits jumped $65BN (the second weekly increase in a row) to the highest level since the SVB banking crisis (and deposit exodus). Even with deposit inflows and money-market outflows, the divergence did not improve much (yet). Excluding foreign bank deposits, domestic banks saw inflows on both an SA and NSA basis (+$36.4BN and $67.1BN respectively). Breaking it out, Large banks saw $30BN SA and $51BN NSA deposit inflows while Small banks saw $6.1BN SA and $15.3BN NSA deposit inflows.

Over the past six weeks, domestic banks have added $245BN in deposits (on an NSA basis) and lost $13BN in deposits (on an SA basis)... Rather oddly, on the other side of the ledger, amid these surging deposits this week, loan volumes shrank for both large and small banks (-$3.7BN and -$1.7BN respectively)... Finally, the key warning sign continues to trend ominously lower (Small Banks' reserve constraint - blue line), supported above the critical level by The Fed's emergency funds (for now)

As the red line shows, without The Fed's help, the crisis is back (and large bank cash needs a home - green line - like picking up a small bank from the FDIC).

All of which makes us wonder - you know, just thinking out loud - are we setting up for another banking crisis in March as:

1) BTFP runs out (it was only a 12 month temporary program), and

2) RRP drains to zero, at which point reserves get yanked which means huge deposits flight.[I don’t necessarily agree with that as plenty of tricks up sleeves but we’ll see how it plays out but it brings up the next point made in article]. Is that why The Fed needed to bring rates down massively and fast, to reduce the bond losses on banks' books?

Transient receives life sentence for killing NH couple

Brian Reid knows his parents will always be remembered as humanitarians, loving family members, dedicated tennis players and global ambassadors.

He hopes the name and memory of Logan Clegg, the man convicted of murdering Steve and Wendy Reid as they went for a walk near their Concord home, will fade into the shadows of the four walls of the jail cell where he will spend the rest of his life.

Clegg, 27, shot and killed the Reids on the Broken Ground trail system in April of 2022. It was broad daylight and no motive was ever revealed. On Friday, he was sentenced to New Hampshire State Prison on two counts of murder for a minimum of 50 years and a maximum of life.

“There is no chance, as this sentence holds, that he will spend a day outside of prison,” said Merrimack County Superior Court Judge John Kissinger. “I hope the family has peace.”

Reid family members and friends took the microphone in court Friday morning expressing the loss they felt and the love they shared with Steve and Wendy.

When Barbara Reid stood to speak, she introduced herself as Bobbie – Steve’s sister-in-law.

She married into a tight-knit family, where Steve and her husband Peter roomed together for a year while attending the University of Notre Dame. Later on, they lived alongside their brother Mark in California.

When she and Peter were engaged, it wasn’t a question as to who would be his best man.

“Despite the decades of literally living half a world apart, Peter and Steve could always pick up right where they left off as if they had just seen each other only yesterday, instead of months or years ago,” she said.

Peter misses many things in his brother’s absence – doubles tennis matches, Patriots football games, Friday night dinners at Szechuan Gardens on Fisherville Road. It was only the start of the retirement years they envisioned sharing.

And as the brothers reunited, Bobbie found a new friend and confidant in Wendy. Broken Ground was one of Wendy’s favorite trails in Concord and just three days before the murders, the two women walked the loop together.

In October, a jury found Clegg guilty on all charges – four counts of second-degree murder, four counts of falsifying evidence and one count of possession of a firearm as a convicted felon – after a three-week trial.

Prosecutors painted a portrait of Clegg as an elusive individual, who lied to police in the aftermath of the murderunder an alias, Arthur Kelly. Clegg, a transient, left little trace in Concord, burning his campsite in the woods off the Broken Ground Trails.

When he was finally tracked down by police in Burlington, Vermont, the contents of his backpack linked him back to the Concord crime.Clegg had the murder weapon, a Glock 17, a Romanian identification card, a one-way plane ticket to Germany and $7,100 in cash.

Throughout the trial, Clegg showed no emotion as he returned to the murder scene and sat through hours of witness testimony and evidence.

On Friday, he took to the microphone himself, in defense of his innocence.

“No man with any pride or dignity gives up just because it was a single battle,” he said. “Especially when he knows he was in the right.”

He thanked his lawyers, Caroline Smith and Maya Dominguez, for their support throughout the process. And he vowed if the Supreme Court would hear his case, his conviction would be overturned.

“When you have to throw sand in your opponent’s eyes in order to win, that’s a sure sign that you’re not the one who deserves to win,” he said.

Kissinger rejected Clegg’s account.

“Let me be clear. There is absolutely no basis to that claim,” he said. “There is no doubt in my mind that Concord police worked tirelessly and skillfully to bring the killer of Steve and Wendy Reid to justice.”

A six-month investigation, with help from local, state and federal law enforcement, identified Clegg as the sole suspect.He was arrested in Vermont in October of 2022.

A member of the Reid family attended each event – from Clegg’s arraignment through the three-week trial, shared Keelan Forey, Steve and Wendy’s niece.

It’s testimony to their family foundation. And something she wanted Clegg to know, as she chose to address Clegg directly.

“My family is strong and we are smart,” she said. “We have what you don’t have which is meaning, purpose, each other and love.”

It’s the casual moments that catch Bobbie off guard – seeing someone from behind in the grocery store who resembles Wendy, or passing a log on Turkey Pond Road, where she sat with Wendy to plan Steve’s birthday dinner.

After their bodies were found, Bobbie would drive to the trailhead parking lot and sit in her car, looking for answers.

One day, she said to herself: “What happened to you guys?”

Never before has she heard voices from beyond, she said. But that day, alone in her car, they answered.

“We’re alright,” she heard Wendy say.

“You don’t want to know,” Steve replied.

“We’re here today because we all now know what happened and exactly who was responsible,” said Bobbie.

When Wendy replied that they were all right and they are okay, she is correct, said Bobbie, because Steve and Wendy are together. But for the family left behind, it’s a different story.

“We are not all right and we will never be okay,” she said. “The predictable waves of grief and the rogue waves of grief over the senseless murders of Steve and Wendy continue to crash over us and won’t ever cease.”

Concord, NH — Stephen Leavitt Reid and his wife Djeswende Pasgo Reid tragically died on Monday, April 18, 2022. Steve was born in 1955 in Concord, New Hampshire, the second of five children of William and Peggy-Ann (Leavitt) Reid. Djeswende,affectionally known as Wendy,was the eldest daughter of nine children, born in Benin in 1956 to Bila and Poco Pasgo.

A man of great learning dedicated beyond the call of duty, gifted yet humble, Steve grew up in a lively and loving home in south Concord. Steve attended Concord schools graduating from Concord High School in 1973. An avid athlete, he played defensive back for the CHS football team and made 3 interceptions in a single game which up until that time had never been done at CHS. Steve later attended the University of Notre Dame where he graduated with highest honors in 1978 with a degree in English. After receiving full scholarships to several law schools, Steve decided to pursue a career in public service, starting by joining the Peace Corps.

In 1979, Steve's first overseas assignment took him to the small town of Madaoua in Niger, West Africa where he taught English. In 1982, Stevereturned to the United States to take a position at Peace Corps headquarters in Washington, D.C., as a liaison to several West African countries. It was there that Steve met the love of his life, Djeswende (Wendy).

Although Wendy was raised in Togo, both her parents and the extended family hailed from Burkina Faso. As the daughter of a prominent pastor in the Assemblies of God Church, she was raised with, and maintained, a deep-rooted faith.

Departing from tradition Bila Pasgo nurtured and supported his daughter's love of basketball and encouraged her to achieve an early international career. Wendy traveled the world with the Togolese National Basketball Team participating in international competitions in Lagos, Cairo, Paris, Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Buenos Aires, Bamako, Kinshasa, and Brazzaville –and winning awards and medals in Tunis, Dakar, Nairobi, Mexico City and Yamoussoukro.

Wendy applied to and earned scholarships to attend college in the United States. Whilean undergraduate in Washington, D.C., Wendy was introduced to Steve via a mutual friend who told her that he knew an American who spoke Hausa (a West African language) and Parisian French well enough to meet her conversational standards. Upon meeting Steve, Wendy went from disbelief to impressed. It took several invitations to play tennis from the timid Steve Reid, as well as a hint from Wendy's college roommate for her to understand the romantic intentions behind those invitations.

Wendy was as outgoing and extroverted as Steve was introverted and reserved; in short, they made a dynamic pair who complemented one another and brought out the best in each other. From both sides of the Atlantic, the Pasgo and Reid families recognized Wendy and Steve's genuine love for each other and blessed their 1984 marriage in Senegal. However,Steve and Wendy ensured their children were born in Steve's native Concord, NH. In 1986 their first child, Lindsay Wenkouni Reid arrived, followed in 1990 by the birth of their second child, Brian Daniel Reid. Steve and Wendy provided their two children with abundant multicultural childhood experiences, and instilled in them a sense of global community, love of humanity and human diversity in all its forms, hard work, courage and integrity.

Apromotion to Associate Director of the Peace Corps in Senegal, had Steve leading numerous projects addressing reforestation, water supply, community development, and intercultural language training. Steve eventually left the Peace Corps to attend Syracuse University to pursue a master's degree in public administration while Wendy worked to support their growing family.

In 1989,Steve was recruited by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to work with a local NGO (non-governmental organization) headquartered in Burkina Faso dedicated to addressing the interrelated issues of climate change and food security in West Africa. Here Wendy worked first as a Personnel Assistant and later as a Community Liaison Officer for the American Embassy.

Steve excelled in the field of international development and became a career Chief of Party,directing USAID-funded projects in Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Niger, Senegal and Haiti for Tetra Tech (formerly Associates in Rural Development) and The Mitchell Group.Always respectful of local people and cultures, Steve was an exceptional leader of multicultural teams. Soft spoken and down-to-earth, he easily gained the respect, love, admiration, and trust of those he served as a living embodiment of humility, hard work and compassion.

Throughout his long career, Steve was able to count on the love and support of his wife, who was instrumental to his success, often accompanying him on field visits, organizing logistics, translating and copy-editing reports in French and English. In 2003, she completed the degree she was pursuing before marrying and raising two children. Wendy graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, from Suffolk University (Dakar, Senegal Campus). She went on to serve as an Admissions Counselor for the University, recruiting and supporting the enrollment of students from French-speaking West African countries.

Later they moved to Burlington Vermont where Steve served as aSenior Associate for Democracy and Governance at ARD Inc. (presently Tetra Tech ARD)and Wendy served as a Program Coordinator atVermont Refugee Resettlement, a field office of the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.

In 2009, the couple accepted an assignment in Haiti where Steve worked on a USAID-funded local governance project to increase transparency and improve collaboration among municipalities.Steve and Wendy were in Port-au-Prince during the devastating earthquake of 2010.Instead of evacuating the country like most foreigners, they chose to stay. Steve helped shore up the municipalities most impacted by the earthquake and Wendy supported efforts to protect internally displaced persons as an Administrative Coordinator/Interim Program Manager, again for the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants.

After retiring in 2019 from Niger, Steve and Wendy finally returned to Concord with the intention of spending the rest of their lives with family and old friends whom they loved so much. After a gap of several decades, Steve returned to playing tennis, and enjoyed the challenges and comradery of doubles competitions. Spurred on by the pandemic's emphasis on outdoor activities, Steve and Wendy enjoyed hiking together on Concord's vast trail system.

Although not a publicly affectionate man, Steve left a trove of romantic letters written to his wife. Forming a remarkable team throughout their married and professional lives, Steve and Wendy lived and died next to each other, united for better or worse, when their lives were cruelly taken on April 18th.

FRISCO, Texas — A former North Texas youth pastor has been arrested for possessing child porn, and police are asking for possible victims to come forward in the case.

The Frisco Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children Unit says it received a cyber tip that 36-year-old Kyle Timothy Poff was possibly in possession of child pornography. During the investigation, detectives obtained a search warrant.

Frisco PD says on Thursday, Dec. 14, Poff was arrested at his home in the 2700 block of Pine Trail Drive in Little Elm.

Poff has been charged with possession of child pornography – a 3rd-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $10,000, police say.

Poff’s bond has been set at $10,000, according to Frisco PD.

Poff was a former youth pastor in both the Frisco and Arlington areas. Police are asking anyone with information concerning Poff to call the Frisco Police Department at 972-292-6010. Tips can also be made anonymously by texting FRISCOPD and the tip to 847411 (tip411), or by downloading the Frisco PD app.

"Vivek Ramaswamy, a 2024 Republican presidential candidate and co-founder of Strive Asset Management, has been sued twice by former employees of his company.

Ramaswamy has garnered media attention over his fight against environmental, social, and corporate governance, penning a book titled "Woke, Inc: Inside America's Social Justice Scam."

One of his former co-workers, Joyce Rosely, sued him and fellow co-founder, Anson Frericks, and Strive Asset Management, earlier this month in Union County, New Jersey, court records revealed.

Rosely alleged that Frericks and Ramaswamy "demand[ed]" her to break securities laws. This included telling new employees to begin sales before their licenses had transferred, allowing non-registered employees to talk with clients and moving on deals before products had been sufficiently registered.

The former employee also claimed that Ramaswamy and Frericks "themselves engaged in securities sales activities despite the fact that neither has a securities license," according to the complaint.

She also alleged that she was fired two months after reporting sexual harassment at the company.

Ramaswamy specifically was alleged to have been involved in securities dealings over Twitter. Strive said in a statement it "intends to vigorously defend itself" and cannot comment on ongoing litigation, according to Bloomberg

A representative of Ramaswamy did not immediately respond to The Messenger's request for comment via social media.

Another employee, John Phillips, sued the same group as well, in Johnson County district court in Kansas in June.

Phillips, who was also fired from Strive, was the senior vice president and Heartland Regional Director at Strive from October 2022 to March 2023, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Phillips claimed that the company was dishonest about its financial situation to investors as well as employees, according to Bloomberg."

The world's most advanced space-based thermometer thrilled scientists when it first came online.

The HOTSAT-1 satellite's first images, released in early October, revealed in unprecedented detail how temperatures change on Earth's surface. The satellite's camera was so sensitive it could even track trains from space from their thermal signatures. But now, only six months after its launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, the experimental spacecraft is out of order.

SatVu, HOTSAT-1's maker and operator, announced on Friday, Dec. 15, that the spacecraft suffered an "anomaly, which is expected to impact ongoing operations."

The emailed statement doesn't specify the nature of the anomaly, but the BBC stated in its report that the affected system is HOTSAT-1's precious thermal camera, which stopped working "earlier this week." According to the BBC, SatVu's engineers are still in contact with the spacecraft but don't expect to restore operations.

The London-based SatVu said it is currently working with U.K. small satellite manufacturer Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd, which built HOTSAT-1, to assess the problem.

The company released the first images captured by the 3.3 by 3.3 by 3.3 feet (1 by 1 by 1 meter) spacecraft in early October, delivering on its promise to provide the most detailed look at the distribution of heat on Earth's surface. Capable of resolving details as small as 11 feet (3.5 m), HOTSAT-1's innovative camera allowed scientists to visualize the thermal effects of city parking lots on surrounding buildings or the cooling influence of harbors and maritime ports. The camera also provided insights into the behavior of wildfires and, in one particularly stunning sequence, captured the thermal footprint of a train travelling on a main rail line in Chicago.

One of SatVu's main selling points is to map how heat escapes from buildings, and enable city planners to makes improvements that can lead to better energy efficiency and reduced carbon footprints.

Through a combination of a slow shutter and precise pointing technology, HOTSAT-1 was able to outdo all existing temperature monitoring satellites including those built by world's leading space agencies, such as NASA or the European Space Agency.

HOTSAT-1's premature demise, however, is not the end for SatVu. The satellite was insured, and the company plans to launch a replacement as early as 2025, according to the BBC.

"We have ample financial runway to propel us to the next satellite and beyond," Anthony Baker, SatVu CEO and co-founder, said in the statement. "Our learnings from this mission are unparalleled. We are armed with enough data to develop incredible products that will be integral to shaping our future commercial offering."

SatVu, which has secured a total of 30.5 million British pounds ($37.1 million) in venture capital funding so far, plans to ultimately operate a constellation of eight to 10 temperature-monitoring satellites, which would allow scientists, city planners and other parties to monitor in detail how temperatures on Earth change every day.

Army Gen. James Dickinson, U.S. Space Command commander, declared the nation’s 11th and newest combatant command achieved full operational capability during a headquarters town hall Dec. 15, 2023.

“Since its establishment in 2019, USSPACECOM has been singularly focused on delivering exquisite capability to the joint force to deter conflict, defend our vital interests, and, if necessary, defeat aggression,” Dickinson said. “Thanks to the disciplined initiative of our people and the support of our joint, combined and partnered team, I can confidently say we have reached full operational capability.”

Dickinson made the announcement following an in-depth evaluation of the command’s capabilities, to include the ability to execute its mission on “our worst day, when we are needed the most,” he said.

That criteria included:

Accomplishing the Unified Command Plan mission alongside global campaigning, exercising, and responding to crises.

Having the right numbers of skills across the human capital.

Having the infrastructure needed to support command and control across mission and business functions.

Having the necessary command processes and functions in place.

Being able to set the conditions and requirements for the future fight.

This announcement follows the preliminary declaration of Initial Operational Capability on Aug. 24, 2021.

“As the command has matured, challenges to a safe, secure, stable, and sustainable space domain have significantly increased,” Dickinson said. “Both the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation are fielding counter space capabilities designed to hold U.S., Allied and partner space assets at risk. And North Korea and Iran are in the early stages of developing their space enterprise.”

In addition to being competitive and contested, the domain has become increasingly congested with an increase in commercial activity, and the concern of space debris, which has increased by 76% since 2019 to 44,600 objects.

These unique challenges have motivated and focused the command to prepare to counter threats in, to, and from space. And over the last four years the command’s competence has been refined and validated through real-world events and exercise scenarios.

In 2019, the command rapidly established a 24/7 Joint Operations Center, the focal point for command and control of all friendly and threatening activities in the domain that also facilitates the flow of information needed to accomplish assigned missions. Since that time, the JOC has monitored, tracked, and reported a significant number of space activities, enabling timely notification of critical information for decisions by national leaders. Most notable being Russia’s direct-ascent anti-satellite missile test in November 2021 that generated more than 1,500 pieces of orbital debris and drew global condemnation for the long-lasting threat to the domain.

Additionally, the command completed the very first Secretary of Defense-approved operational plan for space and conducted its first 24/7 joint tier-1 exercise, in partnership with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, which served as a major step in validating the headquarters staff as a ready, joint force. The command also spearheaded updates to space warfighting doctrine, Joint Doctrine Publication 3-14, Space Operations, helping to normalize space with other domains, aligning terms across the joint force, and codifying USSPACECOM’s AOR as “astrographic.” The publication also highlights the supporting relationship of USSPACECOM to the other combatant commands through the provision of space capabilities to protect and defend the joint force, and their supported relationship to USSPACECOM through defense of space capabilities in the cyber and terrestrial domains.

Former first lady Melania Trump is facing backlash online after delivering a speech about facing hardships while immigrating to the United States. In a rare public appearance at the National Archives Naturalization Ceremony on Friday, the former first lady, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Slovenia,shared her experience shifting through the complexities of the American immigration processafter moving to the U.S. to pursue a modeling career in 1996.

Her address was in front of 25 immigrants from 25 different nations who were sworn in as new U.S. citizens, andMelania applauded the new citizens "for every step you took, every obstacle you overcome, and every sacrifice you made" to obtain citizenship.

"My personal experience of traversing the challenges of the immigration process opened my eyes to the harsh realities people face, including you, who try to become U.S. citizens," she told those in attendance Friday. "Then, of course, there are nuances of understanding the United States immigration laws and the complex legal language contained therein. I was very devoted, but I certainly was not an attorney."

Critics of Melania (paid shills) noted over social media that her husband, former President Donald Trump, has campaigned on promises to crack down on U.S. immigration policies if reelected to office in the 2024 election, a stark contrast to the former first lady's story about how her pathway to citizenship was "arduous."

"Melania has the audacity to speak of hardship path to citizenship when her husband has criminalized immigration and path to citizenship," wrote author Ann Yonanon X, formerly Twitter. (Wrong!)

Other social media users raised questions about the pathways that Trump and her family used to become U.S. citizens. According to a report by The Washington Post in 2018, Melania received a green card in March 2001by obtaining a visa that is reserved for "=individuals with extraordinary ability," also known as the "Einstein visa." She was sworn in as a U.S. citizen in 2006==, shortly after the birth of her and former President Trump's son, Barron.

In 2018, Melania's parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, were sworn in as citizens through a pathway that former President Trump has repeatedly suggested eliminating “chain migration," helping their family members obtain residency.

Former President Trump's immigration plans for his second term include reinstating his 2019 "Remain in Mexico" program, restricting immigration from migrants coming from the Middle East and ending automatic U.S. citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants who are born in America.

"[Peter] Baker today in The New York Times, he said that I want to be a dictator.I didn't say that, I said I want to be a dictator for one day," Trump said, "And you know why I wanted to be a dictator? Because I want a wall, right? I want a wall and I want to drill, drill, drill."

Praise for Melania's Speech

Several other users on X praised the former first lady's speech, such as Fox News anchor David Asman, who said that Melania's speech pointed to"how difficult but rewarding it is to become a LEGAL citizen, unlike the millions coming in ILLEGALLY."

"Many legal migrants are fed up with [President Joe] Biden's open border policies, and would prefer Trump's merit-based system," Asman added.

Another X user, who goes by the name "johnny maga," also bashed Biden's immigration policies while praising Melania's message. "Melania Trump gave a speech at the national archives where she said becoming a citizen takes time, stressed the importance of 'guarding freedom' & 'contributing to society,'" the user wrote. "Stark contrast to the Biden admins effort to grant citizenship to tens of millions of foreign invaders."

Researchers Spot Strange Microbial Ecosystems in Argentina Desert

Argentina’s Puna de Atacama isn’t exactly known for nourishment. Averaging 14,000 feet above sea level, the desert region is characterized by scarce precipitation and ceaseless sunshine, which give rise to eerily dry conditions. This means the flora and fauna in Puna de Atacama are scanty—so we thought. Researchers have discovered a vast microbial ecosystem nestled within Puna de Atacama’s salt flats, and they believe the organisms that live within them could offer insight into life on seemingly desolate planets.

It all started when scholars spotted a web of unexpected pools on satellite images of Argentina. This prompted researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder and PunaBio, an Argentinian bacterial research lab, to seek out the pools in person. They found that getting to the lagoons required miles of hiking through the unforgiving desert, which could help explain why the pools weren’t well-known.

They found that the lagoons stretched across 25 acres of Puna de Atacama’s salty desert. Although the water was crystal clear, the researchers saw “giant mounds of green growth, some 15 feet wide and several feet high,” under the surface. According to early tests, these were stromatolites, microbial ecosystems that produce layers of rock by trapping errant grains of sand, which are glued together by the microbes’ excretions. But these stromatolites featured high quantities of gypsum, which isn’t typically found in modern stromatolites—just stromatolite fossils.

“This lagoon could be one of the best modern examples of the earliest signs of life on Earth,” CU Boulder geologist Brian Hynek said. The stromatolites mimic those formed during Earth’s Archaean Eon 4 billion to 2.5 billion years ago, which often grew to 20 feet tall.

The living parts of Puna de Atacama’s stromatolites consist of cyanobacteria and archaea. While cyanobacteria, a type of photosynthetic microbe, protect the outside, single-celled archaea create a rusty pink interior. How and why the stromatolites formed in such an oppressive environment is tricky to parse. But due to the area’s high salt levels, strong acidity, and severe exposure to solar radiation, the stromatolites could illustrate how life formed on ancient Earth—or even on Mars.

“If life ever evolved on Mars to the level of fossils, it would have been like this,” Hynek said. “Understanding these modern communities on Earth could inform us about what we should look for as we search for similar features in the Martian rocks.”

However, as with many exciting discoveries, there’s a downside: The site now risks decimation thanks to a new lithium-mining agreement. Hynek and his PunaBio colleague, Mariá Farías, are now eagerly searching for ways to protect some of Puna de Atacama's microbial ecosystem before it's destroyed.

Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly building a sprawling $100 million Hawaii compound — complete with an underground bunker and its own food and energy sources — in a secret project suggesting the social media mogul is trying to conceal his doomsday preparations.

The Facebook founder’s complex called Koolau Ranch is already partially constructed and is shaping up to be one of the most expensive personal construction projects in modern history, according to a Wired investigation of property records and interviews with contractors.

The compound on Kauai island will consist of more than a dozen buildings with two central mansions that will be connected by a tunnel that leads to a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter with an escape hatch accessible via a ladder, Wired reported, citing building plans.

The property will house at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms and will also feature dottings of guest houses and a group of 11 “disk-shaped” treehouses joined together by rope bridges, according to the plans reviewed by the outlet.

The subterranean bunker will hold a living space and mechanical room and feature an apparent “blast-resistant” concrete and steel door, Wired reported.

The billionaire spent $170 million to purchase the land to build his ranch, which he, his wife and kids view as their family home, a spokesperson for Zuckerberg told Wired.

Other exits and entrances throughout the compound’s buildings will have doors with keypad locks and soundproofing, while the library will feature a secret or “blind” door, according to the construction documents. Cameras are already “everywhere,” according to one worker and the plans show that one smaller ranch building has more than 20 cameras alone, the tech publication reported.

Koolau Ranch has another feature showing the Meta CEO may be planning for some sort of apocalypse.

According to Wired’s sources and construction plans, the builders hope to make it completely self-sufficient. A water tank — 55 feet in diameter and 18 feet tall — along with a pump system will be housed on the property, where existing ranching and agriculture on the 1,400 acres already provide food sources.

Zuckerberg has built a 6-foot wall around the compound and has all his contracted workers, no matter their level or involvement, sign NDAs regarding their work on the property, according to Wired.
