Biden Admin Sends Billions To California For Brightline West Rail Project

The Biden Administration declared that it is sending $3 billion in federal taxpayer funds to California for the state’s high-speed rail project.

On Tuesday, the Biden Administration announced that it is sending California $3 billion in federal taxpayer funds for the Brightline West rail project, which covers a quarter of the cost for a high-speed rail line that is set to run from Las Vegas, Nevada, to Los Angeles, California.

Brightline, which is the nation’s only private passenger rail operator offering high-speed service, requested $3.75 billion to help with the project out of about $12 billion in costs.

Advocates anticipate that the project will reduce emissions, ease traffic, and provide a more affordable means of transportation between Las Vegas and California. Every year, about 16 million people travel through the Mojave Desert on Interstate-15 toward Southern California from Las Vegas.

According to Brightline, the rail connection would result in the annual elimination of 3 million car trips.

The trains will run as fast as 180 miles per hour and will have the ability to hold about 500 passengers as often as every 45 minutes, Brightline stated.

The proposed Brightline West project would connect with the existing regional rail system in Los Angeles at Rancho Cucamonga, California, after running from a new station close to the Las Vegas Strip.

It would take just under three hours to complete the trip.

A group of lawmakers from Nevada and California have consistently pushed for federal funding to assist in the project for months, saying that Brightline West was needed for economic growth.

“This historic high-speed rail project will be a game changer for Nevada’s tourism economy and transportation,” Senator Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) said in a statement. “It’ll bring more visitors to our state, reduce traffic on the I-15, create thousands of good paying jobs, and decrease carbon emissions, all while relying on local union labor.”

Rosen additionally mentioned that the $3 billion grant is funded from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

The Brightline West rail project was initially approved 15 years ago and has since experienced unheard-of delays and been remarkably downsized. Earlier this year, the company introduced the first-ever high-speed Orlando to Miami service.

The project is set to be fully constructed by 2027, which will be just in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

On Friday, President Joe Biden will be in Las Vegas, where most assume he will officially announce the Brightline West rail project to the public.

The Basis Trade: US Treasuries, Arbitrage, hedge funds, and Leverage-how it may affect you

What you are seeing in the debt Market is a combination of many moving parts: hedge funds using leverage on United States Treasury debt-bills specifically but less of notes because bills are short-term. You'll need to understand two things being long and asset and short a derivative of the same assetthis is key.This strategy can be used for any asset class that trades a derivative of it such as a futures contract, or an option contract of an equity (stonks). Now on to the US Treasury arbitrage opportunity or exploitation depending on your point of view. It exists however the profit is very small on a per trade basis meaning a single trade. Hedge Funds buy US Treasury Bills/Notes but will stick with bills for this example as they also borrow money on a short term basis-overnight. They buy existing T bills using cash but they also short the futures or derivatives of the same treasury bills. What they care about is the price difference between the actual bill and the derivative of the same bill-thus is Arbitrage and the strategy works if they hold the bill to maturity as that is the intent of this trade. As already mentioned the profit from this trade is very small on a per trade basis. This is where massive leverage comes into play as you couldn't make much money doing this on a single trade basis-you need a lot of these trades to make a decent profit. So what do they do? Jack themselves up to the tits by borrowing in the Repo or Private Market they can then buy the treasuries and the derivative and pocket the difference if you use massive amounts of leverage and do this trade thousands or tens of thousands of times a day because if you do you can see how profitable it will be. But there is a catch to doing this successfully as the rate of repo (their COF or cost of funding) must remain consistent or you will be forced out of your trade if the cost of funds or securities/collateral changes dramatically/see uptick in SOFR rates as this is affecting this trade slowly but could blow it out altogether if the hunt for cash gets out of hand.

EU state to reduce welfare payments to Ukrainian refugees – media

The proposed reductions will not apply to the 100,000 Ukrainian refugees already in Ireland

The Irish government is set to drastically reduce welfare payments to future Ukrainian refugees, in a move designed to signal that the EU country has reached its limit of the numbers of asylum seekers it can accept from Kiev, the Irish Times reported on Monday, citing government sources.

The proposal from Dublin’s Minister for Integration Roderic O’Gormanincludes reducing welfare payments for Ukrainians from €220 ($236) per week to just €38.50 ($41) – the same weekly sumcurrently being offered to asylum seekers of other nationalities.

The move was set to be signed off on by senior government figures on Monday evening before being discussed by the full cabinet on Tuesday. The Irish Times also reported that government sources said the plans are likely to be agreed.

However, the newspaper noted that its sources emphasized thatwelfare reduction would only apply to new arrivalsand not to the approximately 100,000 Ukrainian refugees already in Ireland. Other measures expected to be approved include limiting state-approved accommodation for future refugees arriving from Ukraine to 90 days before they must find housing of their own.

Senior government officials are “frank” that the move is intended to dissuade future refugee arrivals from Ukraine, the Irish Times said.

In response to the proposals, aid organization the Irish Refugee Council said that the government plans are putting “short-term deterrence over long-term planning” and added that refugees would find it “difficult if not impossible” to locate accommodation once the 90-day period had expired.

If, as expected, the legislation changes are passed theywould not take effect until next year.

Speaking to national broadcaster RTE on Sunday James Browne, Minister of State with the Fianna Fail party, said that Ireland must “move from an emergency situation” towards a more “medium-term approach” regarding the influx of refugees to the state.

Browne said: “What we did was, in an emergency situation, put those emergency supports in for Ukrainians that were coming to Ireland,” adding that there has been a “significant increase in secondary movements”of people to Ireland who had already been based elsewhere in the European Union. (So Ukrainians shopped around for best welfare benefits, no wonder they consider Irish stupid, I’m a 1/4 Irish and am ashamed. My Irish Grandmother would have a fit. The issue of secondary movements of refugees into Ireland has also been noted by Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, who said in October thatIreland’s “indefinite” support for refugees is not matched by “a lot of European countries.”Varadkar added that it “makes sense” for Ireland’s refugee welfare system to match others in place in the EU. West wants to replace Zelensky – Russia’s top spy

The Ukrainian president is seen by Kiev’s backers as a potential barrier to peace negotiations, Moscow’s intelligence chief has claimed

Western officials are discussing the potential removal of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky from power, the head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), Sergey Naryshkin, claimed on Monday. The spy chief outlinedthere are numerous reasons why Zelensky is seen as undesirable, the most significant being his lack of flexibility regarding the interests of the West.

According to the SVR chief, the West believes theUkrainian president has gone too far in fostering his image of an uncompromising hawk in the conflict with Russia. In the event of the need to “freeze” the hostilities, this would mean Zelensky is no longer useful in any potential negotiations, Naryshkin claimed.

“According to the US intelligence services, with the way the situation in the Ukrainian theater of war is developing,the need [to freeze the conflict] may come soon,” the spy chief stated.

Naryshkin further claimed that a replacement for Zelensky was being considered due to his unfulfilled promises to defeat Russia on the battlefield,widespread corruption in Ukraine, and the leader’s disrespect when dealing with foreign sponsors. Zelensky has officially decreed that any negotiations with Moscow are impossible as long as Russian President Vladimir Putin remains in power.

Alternatives to Zelensky were discussedon the sidelines ofNovember’s meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, according to Naryshkin. Potential options purportedly include the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Valery Zaluzhny, military intelligence chief Kirill Budanov, the head of the president’s office, Andrey Ermak, or even Kiev mayor and ex-boxer Vitaly Klitschko.

Following Kiev’s failed summer counteroffensive, Ukrainian Colonel General Aleksandr Syrsky said on Sunday that the Russian army is constantly “conducting offensive operations along the entire front.”

Zaluzhny last month referred to the situation on the front lines as a “stalemate,” admitting there was no hope for a breakthrough. Those comments reportedly fueled a growing rift between the general and the Ukrainian president.

According to the Ukrainskaya Pravda news outlet,Zelensky has resorted to creating alternative lines of commandto give orders directly to officers such as Syrsky,thus bypassing Zaluzhny“It seems that Zelensky has two kinds of the ZSU (Ukrainian armed forces): the ‘good’ guys commanded by Syrsky and other favorites, and the ‘bad’ guys who answer to Zaluzhny,” the outlet quoted a source close to the presidential administration as saying. Ukrainians’ trust in Zaluzhny surpassed that of Zelensky even last year, the report claimed, while polls showed that the army general would beat the incumbent leader in a hypothetical presidential election. Earlier this year,Zelensky dismissed the idea of holding elections in 2024as irresponsible at a time of war.

At around 4 p.m. EST on December 11, the Motor Tanker STRINDA was attacked by what is assessed to have been an Anti-Ship Cruise Missile (ASCM) launched from a Houthi controlled area of Yemen while passing through the Bab-el-Mandeb. The STRINDA reported damage causing a fire on-board, but no casualties at this time. There were no US ships in the vicinity at the time of the attack, but the USS MASON responded to the M/T STRINDA's mayday call and is currently rendering assistance.

Orban allies and US Republicans to discuss Ukraine aid cut – Guardian

The meeting is set to take place against a backdrop of Republican ire at Washington’s continued financial aid to Kiev

Allies of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban will hold talks this week withRepublicans in Washington to push for an end to the United States’ military aid to Ukraine, The Guardian reported on Sunday.

GOP officials, including sitting members of Congress,are set to meet members of the Hungarian Institute of International Affairson Monday at a summit hosted by a conservative US think tank, the newspaper claims, citing a Republican source. The two-day event, held by the Heritage Foundation, will also be attended by officials from Budapest’s embassy in Washington.

Monday is set to feature speeches about the conflict in Ukraine, the report says, with some attendees – including Republican lawmakers – invited for closed-door talks on Tuesday. The discussions are set to take place amid abackdrop of increasing frustration from some GOP figures in Washington over the Biden administration’s continued financial support for Ukraine. (Well we know Senator Vance will attend based on him being on War Room tonight)

There is no indication of which GOP figures are expected to attend the talks.

The Guardian report adds that Orban, often a vocal critic of Western aid to Ukraine,will seek to stifle military supplies from both Washington and Brussels to Kiev, as the conflict approaches its two-year mark.

“Orban is confident that the Ukraine aid will not pass in Congress,”the report said, quoting an anonymous source with ties to the Hungarian embassy. “That is why he is trying to block assistance from the EU as well.”

The White House last week warned that, without Congressional action, its budget to supply Kiev with weapons and equipment will be exhausted by the end of the year. Last week,Senate Republicans blocked a supplemental funding package for Ukraine– saying that they would only agree in exchange for increased fortification of the United States’ southern border.

Orban has also expressed his opposition to Ukraine’s proposed accession to the European Union (EU), calling the idea “unfounded and poorly prepared” on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this month.

The Heritage Foundation has also expressed opposition to Ukraine’s financial support from the West. Last year, it published a statement entitled ‘Ukraine Aid Pack Puts America Last’. Earlier this year, the conservative organization’s vice-president, Victoria Coates, posted to social media that “It’s time to end the blank, undated checks for Ukraine.”

The foundation is also leading the Project 2025 campaign, which bills itself as a plan to lobby for the reshaping of the US federal government in the event of a Republican victory in next year’s presidential election.

The battlefield situation remains difficult for Kiev, Colonel General Aleksandr Syrsky has said

Russian troops are attacking Ukrainian positions in all areas along the conflict front line, the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, Colonel General Aleksandr Syrsky, has said.

In a Telegram post on Sunday, Syrsky acknowledged that“the operational situation in the east remains difficult” and that the Russian military “doesn’t stop conducting offensive operations along the entire front.”

He added that he had held a meeting with fellow Ukrainian commanders, who have been “on the defensive in the eastern direction,” to analyze the situation and plan further steps.

Decisions were made at the gathering to“ensure the sustainability of our defenses, preserve the lives of our soldiers, and rationally use the ammunition,” Syrsky stressed. Google violated antitrust laws through deals that stifled competition for its Play mobile app store, a jury in San Francisco unanimously found today. The verdict delivers the first significant US courtroom loss for big tech in the years-long campaign by rivals, regulators, and prosecutors to tame the power of internet gatekeepers.

The lawsuit next moves to a remedies phase, meaning a judge as soon as the coming weeks will hear arguments about and decide whether to order changes to Google’s business practices. Users of devices powered by Google's Android operating system could find more app options to choose from, at lower prices, if Google is forced to allow downloads of rival app stores from Play or share a greater portion of sales with developers selling digital items inside their apps.

The ruling came in a case first filed in 2020 by Epic Games, known for its blockbuster game Fortnite and tools for developers, and argued before a jury since early November. The jury of nine—a tenth juror dropped out early in the trial—deliberated for three hours before reaching its verdict. They faced 11 questions such as defining product and geographic markets and whether Google engaged in anticompetitive conduct in those areas.

Epic had accused Google of restricting smartphone makers, wireless carriers, and app developers from providing any competition to the Play store, which accounts for over 95 percent of all downloads onto Android phones in the US.

Google had denied any wrongdoing, saying that its sole aim was to provide a safe and attractive experience to users, especially as it faced competition from Apple, its iPhone, and its App Store.

According to legend, Mary Magdalene, along with her brother Lazarus and others, fled the Holy Land by boat and landed in France. After landing, Mary Magdalene preached the gospel in Marseille before retiring to a cave in the Sainte-Baume mountains for a life of penance and contemplation.

What are these two giant arches across the sky? Perhaps the more familiar one, on the left, is the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy. This grand disk of stars and nebulas here appears to encircle much of the southern sky. Visible below the stellar arch is the rusty-orange planet Mars and the extended Andromeda galaxy. But this night had more! For a few minutes during this cold arctic night, a second giant arch appeared encircling part of the northern sky: an aurora. Auroras are much closer than stars as they are composed of glowing air high in Earth's atmosphere. Visible outside the green auroral arch is the group of stars popularly known as the Big Dipper. The featured digital composite of 20 images was captured in mid-November 2022 over the Lofoten Islands in Norway.

NASA Sensor Produces First Global Maps of Surface Minerals in Arid Regions

NASA’s EMIT mission has created the first comprehensive maps of the world’s mineral dust-source regions, providing precise locations of 10 key minerals based on how they reflect and absorb light. When winds loft these substances into the air, they either cool or warm the atmosphere and Earth’s surface, depending on their composition. Understanding their abundance around the globe will help researchers predict future climate impacts.

Launched to the International Space Station in 2022, EMIT – short for Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation – is an imaging spectrometer developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. The mission fills a crucial need among climate scientists for more detailed information on surface mineral composition.

Surveying Earth’s surface from about 250 miles (410 kilometers) above, EMIT scans broad areas that would be impossible for a geologist on the ground or instruments carried by aircraft to survey, yet it does this while achieving effectively the same level of detail.

To date, the mission has captured more than 55,000 “scenes” – 50-by-50-mile (80-by-80-kilometer) images of the surface – in its study area, which includes arid regions within a 6,900-mile-wide (11,000-kilometer-wide) belt around Earth’s mid-section. Taken together, the scenes comprise billions of measurements – more than enough to create detailed maps of surface composition.

The mission has also demonstrated a range of additional capabilities in its 17 months in orbit, including detecting plumes of methane and carbon dioxide being emitted by landfills, oil facilities, and other infrastructure.

“Wherever we need chemistry to understand something on the surface, we can do that with imaging spectroscopy,” said Roger Clark, an EMIT science team member and senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona. “Now, with EMIT, we’re going to see the big picture, and that’s certainly going to open some eyes.”

Dust and Climate

Scientists have long known that airborne mineral dust affects the climate. They know that darker, iron oxide-rich substances absorb the Sun’s energy and warm the surrounding air, while non-iron-based, brighter substances reflect light and heat, cooling the air. Whether those effects have a net warming or cooling impact, however, has remained uncertain.

Researchers have an idea of how dust travels through the atmosphere, but the missing piece has been the composition – the color, essentially – of the surface in the places dust typically originates, which until now was derived from fewer than 5,000 sample sites around the world. Based on billions of samples, EMIT’s maps offer much more detail.

“We’ll take the new maps and put them into our climate models,” said Natalie Mahowald, EMIT’s deputy principal investigator and an Earth system scientist at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. “And from that, we’ll know what fraction of aerosols are absorbing heat versus reflecting to a much greater extent than we have known in the past.”

Dust and Ecosystems

Beyond harnessing EMIT’s mineral data to improve Earth climate modeling, scientists can use the information to study dust’s impact on the ecosystems where it lands. There’s strong evidence that particles settling in the ocean can spur phytoplankton blooms, which can have implications for aquatic ecosystems and the planet’s carbon cycle. Scientists also have shown that dust originating in the Andes of South America, as well as in parts of northern and sub-Saharan Africa, provides nutrients for rainforest growth in the Amazon basin.

EMIT data can enable researchers to pinpoint the sources of mineral dust and get a more detailed look at its composition, helping estimate the travel of key elements such as phosphorus, calcium, and potassium, which are thought to factor into this long-distance fertilization.

“EMIT could help us to build more intricate and finely resolved dust-transport models to track the movement of those nutrients across long distances,” said Eric Slessarev, a soil researcher at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. “That will help us to better understand the chemistry of soils in places very far from the dust-generating regions.”

A New Generation of Science

Aside from tracking 10 key minerals that are part of its primary mission, EMIT data is being used to identify a range of other minerals, types of vegetation, snow and ice, and even human-produced substances at or near Earth’s surface. And with vastly more measurements at their disposal, researchers will be able to find statistical relationships between surface characteristics and other features of interest.

An egg-shaped metallic UFO was kept at Area 51 in the 1980s, a whistleblower claims in an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com.

Engineers at the Nevada airbase claimed the CIA found the strange craft in the desert and brought it to them for investigation – but later shipped it to another base after they were unable to get inside the object.

Eric Taber has been a defense aerospace contractor for 13 years and has held a security clearance to work on military aircraft.

In an interview with DailyMail.com, he revealed the story his late great uncle Sam Urquhart, an Area 51 contractor, told him about a UFO at the mysterious desert base.

Taber testified in May to the Pentagon's UFO investigation unit, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO), who are collecting accounts of alleged government possession of non-human craft.

The claim – though an unverified story from a now-deceased witness – is part of a long history of rumors about potential extraterrestrial craft or futuristic spaceships stored at the Nevada desert airbase near Groom Lake, north of Las Vegas.

The news comes after whistleblowers told Congress the government has a secret program to capture crashed or landed 'non-human' vehicles and has for decades been attempting to glean technological insights from these alleged out-of-this-world objects.

The claims have prompted lawmakers to draft legislation to disclose any such programs, currently working its way through Congress.

Taber spoke to DailyMail.com only about his great uncle's story, declining to comment on any of his own work as a defense contractor.

He said he struck up a friendship with his grandmother's brother after moving to the West Coast from Mississippi in 2012.

The younger engineer said he repeatedly quizzed Urquhart on the truth about rumors of aliens at Area 51, and was always brushed off. But one day Urquhart relented.

'My great uncle served in the Air Force for 28 years, E8 rank [equivalent to a First Sergeant],' Taber told DailyMail.com. 'He told me he worked at Area 51 from 1997 until 2014.'

Urquhart began his job at Area 51 working for defense contractor EG&G, which later partnered with Raytheon to become JT3 LLC and subsequently JT4 LLC.

'He was head of security for his engineering group, and a data configuration specialist. His group did radar cross-section testing.

'I kept asking him about UFOs. He said 'I know nothing'. Then one day we were on his back porch and he said 'Ok, I'll tell you about one craft that I knew of.'

'He said, 'When I first got there in 1997, I had a personal conversation with a senior EG&G engineer whose group was tasked with trying to reverse-engineer an object that was brought there by some CIA people in the 1980s.'

'It was supposedly just found in a remote desert location fully intact.

'The senior EG&G engineer described to my great uncle that it was egg-shaped, about the size of an SUV, smooth and seamless, metallic-looking, silverish gray in color, with no control surfaces, no flaps, no inlet, and no exhaust, and no writing or symbols on the outside.

'These are the best and brightest engineers you can think of. They tried to no avail to figure out what the power source was, how to activate it, and how it works. They tried to induce electricity to it.

'X-rays couldn't penetrate it; it showed up on X-ray as a solid object. They tried to open it and penetrate its hull; they couldn't.

'They said that they were able to take some very small samples of the material. And I'm not an expert in chemistry, but I guess from the isotope ratio or the mixture of elements, they concluded it was not made on Earth.'

It’s not easy to understand the Middle East, but one facet can be found in following the money. One open-wallet nation, Qatar, has been chummy with both Hamas terrorists and U.S. politicians. Our chief investigative reporter Micah Morrison provides the details in our Investigative Bulletin about Qatar’s connections with a former U.S. president and a secretary of state.

Shortly after the world began learning the details of the massacre of Israeli civilians on October 7, Hillary Clinton published a note of support on X for “everyone affected by the horrific attacks by Hamas” and expressed “strong support of our ally,” Israel. The former secretary of state had nothing to say about one of Hamas’s key allies, the energy-rich kingdom of Qatar, and not surprisingly: Qatar is not only an important friend of the U.S. in the region but also for many years was a generous patron of Bill and Hillary Clinton. As Judicial Watch President Tom Fittonnoted on X, Qatar funneled money to the Clintons when Mrs. Clinton was secretary of state and she “hid this until disclosures from Wikileaks and pressure from Judicial Watch forced her to admit to tens of millions of previously hidden foreign cash payments to ‘Clinton Inc.’”

Slipping money into the hands of slippery politicians—a time-honored tradition in the Middle East and elsewhere—of course is not the same as providing significant ongoing state support for a murderous terrorist organization. But the Clinton experience does provide a snapshot of the Qatari influence operation and a warning about what Qatar may be up to elsewhere, including in the United States.

The Qatar-Clinton money trail begins around 2008, when the Clinton Foundation—under pressure due to Mrs. Clinton’s imminent ascent to State Department leadership—published a list of donors. Among them: Qatar, listed as contributing between $1 million and $5 million. A Clinton Foundation spokesman later acknowledged that Qatar had been sending the Clintons money “since 2002.”

Pressure mounted on the Clintons in 2014 with the publication of a Judicial Watch investigative report disclosing that Bill Clinton had earned upward of $48 million in speaking fees around the globe, including from Arab countries, while Mrs. Clinton served as secretary of state. “Former President Clinton trotted the globe collecting huge speaking fees while his wife presided over U.S. foreign policy,” Tom Fitton noted at the time.

In 2016, a leaked Wikileaks email revealed that five years earlier, in 2011, the Clintons had received a $1 million gift from Qatar. That gift was never reported by the Clintons, a clear violation of the disclosure agreement the Clintons had signed with the State Department when Mrs. Clinton took the helm. Soon after the 2011 gift, a high-ranking Qatari official pressed the Clinton circle for “five minutes” with the former president.

Judicial Watch Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuits also turned up more evidence of Clinton conflicts of interest, including the courting of Qatar. A Judicial Watch FOIA disclosure in late 2016 revealed a list sent by a Clinton Foundation senior adviser to a high-ranking aide to Secretary of State Clinton; the list noted more than 200 foreign leaders to be invited to the 2009 Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting, including the emir of Qatar, the Qatari prime minister, and the minister of foreign affairs.

Qatar’s pursuit of influence in the United States is not limited to the Clintons and their allies. According toinvestigative reports, Qatar has given $1 billion to American universities since 2011. Qatar also is a major purveyor of anti-Semitism. Its media is filled with anti-Semitic and anti-Israel propaganda. And at the UN—not exactly a bastion of pro-Israel sentiment—a high-ranking Qatari official was recently denied a senior post on the grounds of anti-Semitism. That’s useful context when considering Qatar’s role supporting Hamas.

Here at Judicial Watch, we’re watching Qatar closely. At home, with concern rising about anti-Semitism on U.S. campuses, we won a recent lawsuit forcing disclosure of information about Qatar’s funding of American universities. SecAF redesignates Space Operations Command West as US Space Forces – Space

Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall has redesignated Space Operations Command West as U.S. Space Forces – Space, a U.S. Space Force Component Field Command directly subordinate to the Chief of Space Operations for execution of the Secretary of the Air Force’s responsibilities under Title 10, U.S. Code for Service-specific administration and support functions on Dec. 6.

U.S. Space Command Commander, Army Gen. James H. Dickinson has designated the U.S. Space Forces – Space Commander Lt. Gen. Douglas A. Schiess, to dually serve as the Combined Joint Force Space Component Commander, granting Schiess authority over all space forces presented by the services to the combatant command.

The activation of Space Forces – Space ensures space forces are most efficiently presented to U.S. Space Command to best meet challenges presented by the dynamic national security environment and the return to great power competition.

Previously, Space Operations Command was assigned to U.S. Space Command as the Space Force service component. The service component responsibilities have been removed from Space Operations Command and realigned under U.S. Space Forces – Space. This realignment streamlines the mission of the service component.

Joint responsibilities within U.S. Space Command previously held by the commanders of Combined Task Force Space Operations, Combined Force Space Component Command and Joint Task Force-Space Defense will be transitioned to Schiess in his role as Combined Joint Force Space Component Commander.

Space Forces – Space was activated on Dec. 6, following U.S. Senate confirmation of Schiess’ promotion to lieutenant general. An activation ceremony is scheduled to take place in January.

Ukraine's Largest Mobile Network Hit By Major Cyberattack Blamed On Russia

Ukraine has accused Russia of being behind a major cyberattack against the country's main mobile network Kyivstar, which has left masses of customers without phone or internet access. The outage has reportedly even left one city, Sumy, without its mobile air raid sirens, crucial for warning residents of inbound Russian drones or missiles.

Kyivstar says it was targeted in a "powerful hacker attack" which Ukraine's security services are currently investigating. The network is responsible for about 24 million mobile customers and supplying internet access to some one million homes. Businesses too have been impacted.

"This is definitely a cyberattack and the probability that Russian entities are behind it is very close to 100%," chief executive officer of Kyivstar, Oleksandr Komarov, said Tuesday. He called it the result of "illegal interference" and linked it to the ongoing Russian invasion. "The war with Russia has many dimensions and one of them is in cyberspace."

Bloomberg cited him further as saying "It’s the biggest such attack since the Kremlin started its invasion in February, 2022." Ukraine's ministry which oversees infrastructure says it is hoping to restore service within hours.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is also involved and has pointed the finger at Moscow, describing, "One of the versions currently being investigated by SBU investigators is that the Russian special services may be behind this hacker attack."

PrivatBank, which is Ukraine's largest, documented that some ATM machines were not working and could be "unstable" or "have no connection". Dutch parent company Veon says it's urgently working with Kyivstar on "additional security measures" to prevent such hacks in the future.

At the same time, Ukraine's intelligence services have recently owned up to hacking operations targeting Russia, including an operation reportedly targeting Russia's national tax and financial accounting systems.

Google Loses On Every Count In Play Store Antitrust Case With Epic Games

Google just lost its first antitrust trial, as a San Francisco jury returned a decision that Google harmed rival Epic Games, maker of the popular video game Fortnite, in the $48 billion dollar app store Android market. Google is facing multiple antitrust cases in different parts of its business, this is the first trial to reach a decision. So what happened? And what does it mean going forward?

Three years ago, Epic’s CEO Tim Sweeney launched a dramatic legal assault against Apple and Google for monopolizing the on-ramp to the phone. This case didn’t come from the left or right, but from the commercial world. It was part of what I called a civil war in American business, as smaller companies across the economy began marshaling against dominant big tech goliaths.

Epic sued both Apple and Google to break their ironclad control over app stores. Here’s the Wall Street Journal summarizing the case:

Epic’s case centered on Google’s dominant position in the market for apps on mobile devices running the company’s Android software, and the fees it charges for developers on its Play Store.

The game developer in 2020 began encouraging Fortnite players to pay Epic directly for purchases of in-game items, rather than using systems developed by Google and Apple. Both tech giants kicked Fortnite out of their app stores…

It became clear during the trial that Google’s goal was to maintain its dominance by preventing the emergence of other app stores.

Google worried about a “contagion effect” with other gaming companies if Epic were to move its flagship title Fortnite away from the Play Store, according to company documents the developer presented at trial.

The tech giant paid $360 million to Activision Blizzard and millions of dollars to 19 other game developers as part of an initiative called Project Hug, an initiative Epic argued was aimed at discouraging them from developing rival app stores. The search company argued the payments encouraged gaming companies to make their titles available in the Play Store.

The judge also ruled that Google had destroyed relevant trial evidence, and told the jury to weigh that behavior in its decision. Here’s Sean Hollister in the Verge on what happened after the jury heard the testimony and judicial instructions:

After just a few hours of deliberation, the jury unanimously answered yes to every question put before them — that Google has monopoly power in the Android app distribution markets and in-app billing services markets, that Google did anticompetitive things in those markets, and that Epic was injured by that behavior. They decided Google has an illegal tie between its Google Play app store and its Google Play Billing payment services, too, and that its distribution agreement, Project Hug deals with game developers and deals with OEMs were all anticompetitive.

Argentina’s new President Javier Milei promised the people of his country that if elected, he would slash the size of their government and so far, he is delivering.

On his first day in office, he cut the number of government ministries from 21 to 9 and he is probably not even finished yet.

The departments he cut are largely the ones based on progressive ideas like social justice. He is clearly serious about radical reform for Argentina.

For the first time in decades, Argentina is no longer ruled by socialists. Libertarian-leaning President Javier Milei was officially sworn in on Sunday, marking a major turning point in the country’s battle against hyperinflation and economic decline.

In November, Argentina reached 183 percent inflation for 2023, impoverishing around 40 percent of the country, a reality that helped sweep Milei into power. Now, he’s taking action, with his first move in office being an executive order that slashes the number of government ministries from 21 to nine. Among those put on the chopping block was the ministry of “women, genders, and diversity,” a move he recently telegraphed in his criticisms of “social justice.”

It didn’t take long for the hand-wringing to begin in the press. PBS News published an article dripping with sanctimony, claiming that Milei’s ideas are “outlandish” and “radical.” What makes that so ironic is that the very same article admits that Argentina is in dire straits.

Abortion bills introduced ahead of Missouri legislative session include murder charges for mothers

At least nine bills have been prefiled ahead of the 2024 legislative session suggesting changes to Missouri's abortion laws, including one that would make mothers who get abortions criminal homicide subjects.

The bill text says it protects the right to life by "protecting the lives of unborn persons with the same criminal and civil laws protecting the lives of born persons by repealing provisions that permit willful prenatal homicide or assault."

First-degree murder is the most serious homicide charge. It denotes a premeditated murder. In Missouri, the state can pursue capital punishment the death penalty against someone with a first-degree murder charge.

West Virginia’s chief elections officer, now a candidate for governor, has again said the 2020 presidential election was rigged.

“The election was stolen, and it was stolen by the CIA,” Secretary of State Mac Warner, a Republican, said Thursday night during a MetroNews debate for gubernatorial candidates.

Of the candidates at the debate, Warner was the only one who went so far.

Businessman Chris Miller, son of Congresswoman Carol Miller, when asked if the election was stolen responded “possibly.” House Judiciary Chairman Moore Capito, son of U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito, would only say that West Virginia elections were secure and would go no farther.

A fourth gubernatorial candidate, Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, who did not attend the debate, signed West Virginia on to a 2020 federal lawsuit that sought to invalidate election results in Michigan, Georgia, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The U.S. Supreme Court dismissed it for lack of standing under Article III of the Constitution.

Warner, a longtime Army officer who comes from an active political family, was explicit at the debate: “The election was stolen.”

‘Stop the Steal’

For Warner, who has served as West Virginia’s Secretary of State since 2017, the claim was a variation on a consistent public position of casting doubt on the presidential election.

Warner is now vying to become West Virginia’s chief executive, touting his long record in the U.S. Army and his two terms as the state’s chief elections officer. Polls have shown him running behind some of the other candidates, but he has picked up a key endorsement from the former president’s orbit and hopes for more.

Following the 2020 election, Warner participated in a March for Trump rally and appeared in the backdrop of Right Side Broadcasting coverage holding up a “Stop the Steal” sign. At that point, he questioned voting methods in some states.

He continued into early 2022, questioning elections processes in swing states like Pennsylvania and Michigan. On August 22, 2022, Warner argued in a spirited discussion on MetroNews’ “Talkline” that “votes came in outside the law.”

That was after former President Donald Trump and his allies lost 62 lawsuits contesting election processes, vote counting and the vote certification process in states that included Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Most were dismissed because of lack of evidence.

Michael Flynn endorsement

More recently, Warner has promoted an endorsement by former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who was among Trump’s most prominent allies in supporting election fraud claims.

Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, was Trump’s national security adviser for just 24 days. He was fired over his lies about discussions over U.S. sanctions with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak prior to the Trump administration’s taking office.

Flynn twice pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his conversations with the Russian ambassador. In late 2020, as Flynn was fighting to keep Trump in office, he received a pardon.

Flynn was among the high-level Trump supporters, including attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, who gathered in the Oval Office on Dec. 18, 2020, for a now-notorious late-night brainstorming session about overturning the election. Flynn had been advocating for the imposition of martial law, saying Trump should “seize” voting machines to hold a new election.

In testimony before the select congressional committee investigating the events surrounding Jan. 6, Flynn asserted his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination in response to a series of questions, including whether he believes in the peaceful transition of power in the United States of America.

Mercs Unmasked: US Hired Guns From Ukraine Spotted in Gaza Operating on Behalf of Israel

The American mercenary firm, Forward Observations Group (FOG), previously known for its presence in Ukraine, has claimed to have active members engaged in combat inside Gaza on behalf of Israel, Sputnik has learned.

FOG's official social media accounts have posted numerous photos and videos from Israel, including the southern regions near the Gaza border and the Gaza Strip itself. Some of the images show equipment decked out with both US and Ukrainian flags.

Since March 2022, FOG members have made multiple visits to Ukraine.

The company openly acknowledges its involvement in fighting alongside the Kiev regime, namely, in the battle for Severodonetsk.

Moreover, there are photos on the firm's social networks that prove that FOG's mercenaries use kindergartens in Ukraine as deployment sites.

Forward Observations Group was officially registered as a private company in the US state of Nevada on October 15, 2020. Founded by Derrick Bales, a former American soldier with experience in Afghanistan, the company, among Western outlets, presents itself as a lifestyle brand, specializing in the sale of tactical gear.

Who Is Sara Biden? Joe’s In-Law Emerges as Central Figure in Foreign Cash Deals

Trouble has followed Sara Catherine Jones since she married into the Biden family almost three decades ago.

Not long after her 1995 wedding to Jim Biden, she took a job with one of his brother Joe’s Senate donors, who later accused her of “fraud” and “unjust enrichment,” according to court records reviewed by RealClearInvestigations. In the years since, she and her husband have been accused of reneging on debts and failing to pay their taxes, court and property records show. Like their nephew, first son Hunter Biden, they have reportedly sold the promise of access to their powerful relative to companies, several of which have gone bankrupt, some of which are tied to foreign countries hostile to the United States.

Now, Sara Jones Biden has emerged as a key figure in the mushrooming Biden foreign influence-peddling scandal.

GOP lawmakers seek to question the 64-year-old licensed attorney as part of their investigation of President Biden for possible impeachable offenses, including bribery. They are especially interested in subpoenaed bank records that include almost a quarter million dollars in checks Sara Biden wrote to her brother-in-law Joe, conspicuously marking them as “loan repayment.” Republicans want to ask her about the origin of those loans and whether checks “were funded by Biden influence-peddling schemes with China.”

“The Committees require you to provide details of these payments and other related matters,” the chairmen of the House Oversight and Judiciary committees said in a joint letter they sent to her last month demanding she make herself available for a transcribed interview. In addition, they sent a subpoena to her husband for testimony and information.

Although Hunter and Jim Biden’s questionable business dealings – and their possible blessing from the president – are drawing increasing scrutiny, Sara Biden has drawn little attention until now. But court records and other documents show she has been a central player in the Biden family business for decades. They show how her and her husband’s desire for a lifestyle they could not quite afford has repeatedly led them to form relationships with shady figures and enterprises that often ended in lawsuits and even criminal investigations.

Looming over it all is Joe Biden. Documents recently obtained by government watchdog America First Legal, under a Freedom of Information Act request, reveal that Sara and Jim’s main business, the Lion Hall Group, shows up in more than 3,735 emails generated by the former Vice President Biden’s office. The sheer volume of communications concerning his brother and sister-in-law’s business appears to contradict Biden’s repeated claims over the years that he was never involved in, or even aware of, his family’s business dealings.

Sara Biden’s links to Joe Biden date back to the early 1990s, when she landed a committee job with his close personal friend, Sen. Wendell Ford, a Kentucky Democrat.

“Sen. Ford has been an important part of our family for a long time,” Joe Biden said after Ford died in 2015. “He gave Sara Jones Biden, from Owensboro, Ky., her first job on the Hill when she graduated from Duke Law School, and that’s how she met my brother Jimmy.”

Jimmy and Sara weren’t just sweethearts; they were also business partners – with a taste for high living.

In 1997, Sara and Jim Biden formed consulting firm Lion Hall Group with the help of Joe Biden’s old law partner, David Walsh, who acted as their registered agent, according to incorporation records they filed with the Delaware Department of State.
