The Swedish organisations - Doctors' Appeal, Nurses' Appeal and the Human Rights and Democracy Party MoD have launched a global petition: Nobel Prize Protest. All citizens of the world are invited to sign the petition.

The petition was created to protest against the award of this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to two scientists who made it possible to use mRNA technology to produce COVID-19 vaccines. Based on a study of vaccination rates and mortality in 17 countries in the southern hemisphere, an estimated 17 million people have died due to adverse reactions to COVID-19 vaccines, the vast majority of which are based on mRNA. To honour two scientists who made mRNA vaccines possible with the Nobel Prize is a deep affront of all those who have died or been seriously injured by these products. It resonates with previous awards for same prize for DDT (1948) and to the inventor of the lobotomy (1949).

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFRL) – AFWERX is partnering with NASA to develop a digital operations center for future Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) efforts through the Civilian Commercialization Readiness Pilot Program (CCRPP) awardee, ResilienX.

With the fast-growing field of AAM technology, AFWERX’s Airspace Innovation and Prime Partnerships program has partnered with NASA and the Federal Aviation Administration to fill in technological and administrative gaps that present themselves. Earlier in 2023, AFWERX formalized these partnerships with a Memorandum of Understanding and participation in the AAM Interagency Working Group to plot the future of AAM.

The CCRPP is a NASA Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer program which takes mission-relevant technologies in development and infuses them with funding intended to foster commercialization.

This system is intended to enhance base security, special forces efforts, emergency disaster response, and passenger and cargo transportation planning. It is further being developed to include other technologies necessary for air domain awareness.

“CCRPP is a true example of public-private partnership where government stakeholders and an industry consortium are working together on the airspace efforts,” said Darshan Divakaran, AFWERX Airspace Innovation and Prime Partnerships program manager.

ResilienX is a company focused on the holistic safety assurance of AAM ecosystems and is leading the way with an industry consortium to create a digital system for AAM operations. The project intends to define and perform initial integration of an AAM Operations Center that is scalable, tactical and enables verification and validation of the various systems and sensors involved in uncrewed aerial systems, electric vertical take-off and landing operations, and other advanced aviation technologies. The initial AAM Operations Center will be built out in collaboration with NUAIR at the Syracuse Hancock International Airport, with an aim to test and transition it to additional locations by 2025.

Each company in the consortium contributes their industry expertise and technological advancements to create the most robust system possible. As additional requirements are included by military and other government stakeholders, AFWERX plans to bring in additional industry partners in the next phase.

“We are thrilled with the trust AFWERX has put in us to lead this consortium,” said Ryan Pleskach, CEO of ResilienX. “Through a dedicated systems engineering approach, we intend to develop a dual-use solution to the core digital infrastructure needed for advanced air mobility that is inherently scalable and extensible. Through this pioneering effort and with support of all the federal stakeholders that AFWERX is bringing to the table, we believe this solution will be turnkey and available to government and commercial markets in late 2024.”

Utilizing the research expertise of NASA and AFWERX’s subject matter experts, this collaborative project will attempt to meet the needs of the emerging field of AAM operations. It is informed by the U.S. Air Force AAM Operations Center requirements through testing and operator interactions.

“Agility Prime helped pave the way for government and industry to work together on aircraft certification,” said Divakaran. “The Airspace Innovation team is taking it a step forward with airspace integration, management and security efforts focused on emerging aviation technologies.”

The first phase of development will include a detailed need and task assessment, feature development with user interviews and observations, initial integration of baseline technologies, and testing. The second phase will see user testing of human factors, safety development, prototype testing, and a live demonstration of the system.

For this project, ResilienX has received $4.8 million in AFWERX and NASA funding through the CCRPP. The program is planned to progress through October 2025.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan, and other United States government leaders unveiled the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center Monday during the 28th annual United Nations Climate Conference (COP28).

“NASA data is essential to making the changes needed on the ground to protect our climate. The U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center is another way the Biden-Harris Administration is working to make critical data available to more people – from scientists running data analyses, to government officials making decisions on climate policy, to members of the public who want to understand how climate change will affect them,” said Nelson. “We’re bringing space to Earth to benefit communities across the country.”

The U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center will serve as a hub for collaboration between agencies across the U.S. government as well as non-profit and private sector partners. Data, information, and computer models from observations from the International Space Station, various satellite and airborne missions, and ground stations are available online.

As the lead implementing agency of the center, NASA partnered with the EPA, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Science experts from each of these U.S. federal agencies curated this catalog of greenhouse gas datasets and analysis tools.

“A goal of the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center is to accelerate the collaborative use of Earth science data,” said Argyro Kavvada, center program manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “We’re working to get the right data into the hands of people who can use it to manage and track greenhouse gas emissions.”

The center’s data catalog includes a curated collection of data sets that provide insights into greenhouse gas sources, sinks, emissions, and fluxes. Initial information in the center website is focused on three areas:

- Estimates of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities

- Naturally occurring greenhouse gas sources and sinks on land and in the ocean.

- Large methane emission event identification and quantification, leveraging aircraft and space-based data

An example of a dataset is the methane gas information detected by NASA’s EMIT (Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation) mission. Located on the International Space Station, EMIT is an imaging spectrometer that measures light in visible and infrared wavelengths and thus can measure release of methane on Earth.

Built on open-source principles, the U.S. Greenhouse Gas Center’s datasets, related algorithms, and supporting code are fully open sourced. This allows anyone to test the data, algorithms, and results. The center also includes user support and an analysis hub for users to perform advanced data analysis with computational resources and an interactive, visual interface for storytelling. NASA encourages feedback and ideas on the center’s evolution. The center is part of a broader administration effort to enhance greenhouse gas information, outlined in the recently released National Strategy to Advance an Integrated U.S. Greenhouse Gas Measurement, Monitoring, and Information System.

The US Air Force will launch a new military research working group focusing on space defense-related medical solutions.

The Clinical and Operational Space Medicine Innovation Consortium (COSMIC) will be established as a committee combining performance and health research capabilities through the expertise of participating organizations.

Work under the future COSMIC programs will be led by the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Ohio-based 711th Human Performance Wing’s (HPW) Human Effectiveness Directorate.

“This is a win for all involved,” 711th HPW Senior Aerospace Medicine Physician and Researcher Dr. James McEachen stated.

“COSMIC provides an important venue to respond to emerging space-linked medical research requirements while simultaneously promoting collaboration and innovation among our government, academic and industry partners.”

Once operational, COSMIC will partner with the Texas-based 59th Medical Wing (MDW), the US Air Force’s largest medical segment with six groups across San Antonio.

“COSMIC represents a significant milestone in our collective efforts to establish defense space medical research capabilities,” 59th MDW Emergency Physician Maj. Craig Nowadly explained.

“By combining the strengths of both organizations, COSMIC has access to research expertise across a continuum of both clinical medicine and human performance optimization.”

Integrating Knowledge for US Space Defense Operations

McEachen added further benefits of the COSMIC initiative to the US Department of Defense’s understanding of human capabilities when personnel are deployed for missions in the space domain.

“It is important for the [Department of Defense] to understand how human health and performance are impacted during military space operations and to develop capabilities to sustain human performance and mitigate health risks,” McEachen said.

“By establishing this collaborative research working group, COSMIC aims to spearhead more efficient and effective processes for addressing top priority clinical care and human performance research needs for [Department of Defense] space medicine.”

23andMe Admits Major Data Breach as Hackers Access Ancestry Information of Millions

Genetic testing giant 23andMe has admitted in a SEC filing that it has suffered a massive breach that has exposed the ancestry information of millions of customers utilizing the DNA Relatives feature.

Engadget reports that 23andMe, a popular genetic testing and analysis company, recently admitted it experienced a major data breach. According to an SEC filing, this breach affected a portion of the company’s user base, specifically targeting the opt-in DNA Relatives (DNAR) feature. This feature, designed to match users with genetic relatives, was exploited by hackers to access the accounts of about 14,000 of the 14 million total customers, representing roughly 0.1 percent of 23andMe’s user base.

Although the number of compromised accounts was small, the attackers managed to access the DNAR profiles of approximately 5.5 million customers. Additionally, they obtained Family Tree profile information from 1.4 million participants in the DNA Relatives program. These profiles contain sensitive details including display names, locations, shared DNA percentages, family names, predicted relationships, and ancestry reports. It’s also noted that Family Tree profiles include other voluntarily added information such as birth year and location.

The breach was done using a credential-stuffing attack, where hackers used login credentials from other compromised websites to gain unauthorized access to 23andMe accounts. The attackers were able to access and share a significant number of files containing profile information about other users’ ancestry online.

Upon discovering the breach, 23andMe promptly instructed affected users to change their passwords and implemented two-factor authentication for all customers. 23andMe stated that it “believes that the threat actor activity is contained,” and has since completed its investigation. The firm stated that it is notifying all impacted parties and is working to remove the publicly posted information.

Breitbart News first reported on the 23andMe hack in October, long before the company admitted the extent of the situation:

TechCrunch reports that a notorious hacker, identified by the pseudonym “Golem,” has struck again, unleashing a torrent of confidential user records from the popular DNA testing service, 23andMe. This alarming breach follows a previous attack by the same hacker, who has now exposed the personal data of an additional four million users on a well-known cybercrime forum, BreachForums.

Golem stated that the dataset contains information on individuals from Great Britain, claiming it includes data on the wealthiest individuals residing in the U.S. and Western Europe. The compromised data appears to be extensive, revealing sensitive information that could have severe privacy implications for the affected individuals.

Strange 'blob' circling Milky Way's central black hole is shooting powerful radiation at Earth every 76 minutes

Something near the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Milky Way has been firing regular blasts of high-energy gamma-rays toward Earth, and scientists may finally know what it is.

In new non-peer-reviewed research posted to the preprint server arXiv, a duo of astrophysicists at the National Autonomous University of Mexico conclude that the bursts of radiation are emanating from a blob of gas spinning around the black hole at almost one-third the speed of light. The team's findings may solve a mystery regarding the Milky Way's central black hole — formally named Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) and  located around 26,700 light-years from Earth — that has perplexed astronomers for two years .

The gamma-ray radiation pulses from around Sgr A* were first detected belting Earth in 2021. The team behind the observation knew that the radiation couldn't be coming from within the supermassive black hole  itself, however.

That's because all black holes are bound by a region called an event horizon, which marks the point beyond which nothing,   not even light,  has the velocity needed to escape the black hole's immense gravity. This means black holes don't emit radiation themselves, so the gamma-rays must be coming from the environment of Sgr A*.

Other supermassive black holes are known to emit powerful radiation from their immediate surroundings when their gravitational influence generates turbulent conditions in surrounding gas and dust, forming a structure called an accretion disk. As black holes feed on this matter, the accretion disk emits light that spans the electromagnetic spectrum,  from low-energy radio waves to high-energy gamma-rays.

This can't account for the gamma-rays from Sgr A*, however, as the Milky Way's black hole is surrounded by very little matter and is feeding so slowly that it would be equivalent to a human living on a diet of one grain of rice every million years, according to University of Arizona astronomer Chris Impey, who was not involved in the research.

Using data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope collected between June and December 2022, the researchers aimed to discover the origin of these gamma-rays.

The duo searched the publicly available Fermi data for patterns of periodicity in the gamma-ray emissions. They found that the pulses emerge from close to Sgr A* roughly once every 76.32 minutes. This period of emission is half the time between pulses of X-ray radiation also seen coming from the vicinity of the Milky Way's supermassive black hole, suggesting the two emissions are in harmony and are likely related.

"The coincidence of the multiwavelength periodicity in X-ray and gamma-ray points towards a single physical mechanism that produces it," the team wrote in the paper.

This revelation of what the researchers call a "unique oscillatory physical mechanism" led them to conclude that both the gamma-rays and the X-rays are being emitted by a "blob" of gas that is swirling around Sgr A* at around 30% the speed of light  —  or around 200 million mph (320 million km/h). They think this speeding lump of matter is emitting light across several wavelengths of radiation as it swirls around Sgr A*, flaring periodically as its orbit proceeds.

The discovery could give scientists a better understanding of the environments around supermassive black holes, particularly less-ravenous examples, such as the one at the heart of the Milky Way.

Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall made it clear that the Air Force and Space Force are fully committed — and pushing hard — to develop and deploy artificial intelligence as a key element in meeting security challenges posed by China and other adversaries Dec. 2.

Kendall’s remarks were not new, but by voicing them during a session at the influential Reagan National Defense Forum, he added additional weight to the Department of the Air Force’s efforts to use AI as part of a larger push to modernize.

I care a lot about civil society and the law of armed conflict,” Kendall said. “Our policies are written around those laws. You don’t enforce laws against machines, you enforce them against people. Our challenge is not to limit what we can do with AI but to find how to hold people accountable for what the AI does. The way we should approach is to figure out how to apply the laws of armed conflict to the applications of AI. Who do we hold responsible for the performance of that AI and what do we require institutions to do before we field these kinds of capabilities and use them operationally.”

Kendall pointed out that China and other adversaries are aggressively using AI, and while the U.S. maintains an edge, it is shrinking. Kendall’s comments dovetailed with those from Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin, who said at a separate session during the conference that the Air Force must modernize to properly meet the security threats of today.

Part of that effort, Allvin said, is diligently working to integrate AI and machine learning into new capabilities that mesh seamlessly with mission needs and proven technologies, while understanding performance tradeoffs.

“I do believe the future is going to be about human-machine teaming,” Allvin said. “Optimizing the performance and being able to operate at speed. That investment in our collaborative combat aircraft program is what is going to get us there.”

Speed and automation of AI systems have vastly shortened decision timelines. That’s why the DoD’s National Defense Strategy focuses on accelerating decision making and the way information is analyzed and shared.

“We are leveraging algorithms and starting with data fusion and being able to gain insights,” Allvin said. “The changing character of war is speed. If we are going to be privileging speed and have massive amounts of data, the ability to have algorithms and the tools that support and let the analysts do what only humans can do which is make that human decision.”

“Our job on the government side more than anything else is to thoroughly understand this technology, have the expertise we need to really get into the details of it and appreciate how it really works,” Kendall said. “To be creative about helping industry find new applications for that technology and developing ways to evaluate it get the confidence we’re going to need to ensure that it can be used ethically and reliably when it is in the hands of our warfighters.”

Replacing obsolete, legacy systems by harnessing emerging information, communications, and AI technologies to provide operational targeting and decision support with the speed, adaptability and resilience needed to fight in a highly contested environment is a priority for DAF and falls under Kendall’s Operation Imperatives.

“The critical parameter on the battlefield is time,” Kendall said. “The AI will be able to do much more complicated things much more accurately and much faster than human beings can. If the human is in the loop, you will lose. You can have human supervision and watch over what the AI is doing, but if you try to intervene you are going to lose. The difference in how long it takes a person to do something and how long it takes the AI to do something is the key difference.”

Rapid AI development requires DAF to be agile and adaptable in its approach, focusing on rapid testing, experimentation and deployment. The Department of Defense continues to maintain a robust regulatory and ethical framework to ensure the responsible use of AI in defense.

Both men stressed the importance of innovation. Allvin said that innovation is a critical element of modernization and is necessary for maintaining readiness.

“War is a human thing and the ability to leverage technology with human innovation is something we can never walk away from as we’re continuing to develop and more sophisticated systems,” Allvin said.

What happened: Former acting Capitol Police chief Yogananda Pittman appeared last Friday and Tuesday for a closed-door interview with Republicans on the House Administration Committee, top members on the panel said.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), who chairs a key subpanel, said Pittman took part in “transcribed interviews” with his subcommittee about the Jan. 6 insurrection and her departure from the police force.

Dems respond: The appearances drew a protest from the top Democrat on the subpanel, Rep. Norma Torres (D-Calif.), who said Republicans scheduled the Friday interview without informing Democrats or including them.

“This is taking us down a dangerous and unprecedented path, and Americans deserve to know what they are trying to hide,” said Torres in a statement. “Their latest attempt to weaponize Congress’ oversight authority undermines the integrity of this institution and erodes the American people’s trust in our democracy.”

Loudermilk said Democrats were allowed to submit questions on Friday and believed Democrats were offered their own meeting with Pittman on Tuesday to ask questions, too. A senior Democratic committee aide disputed Loudermilk’s comments and said Democrats were excluded from the proceedings and didn’t meet with Pittman or submit questions.

The rules: Although House rules require minority notification and participation in depositions, which are linked to subpoenas compelling an individual to appear, they’re fuzzier on the requirements for voluntary transcribed interviews. Asked about Democrats’ contention that they weren’t allowed to take part in the sit-down, GOP aides countered that there’s no explicit requirement for the minority to take part in interviews.

Why Pittman? Pittman has drawn scrutiny for her role overseeing the Capitol Police’s intelligence division at the time of the attack and for the circumstances surrounding her departure from the Capitol Police for a job as the University of California, Berkeley’s police chief. Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger told lawmakers earlier this year Pittman had been “on leave without pay” from USCP even as she took her new job at UC Berkeley, raising concerns from lawmakers about the nature of the arrangement.

Pittman took part in a transcribed interviewwith the Jan. 6 select committee last year too, though she was questioned mostly about the attack.

But that cost was based in the first 4 months with little activity and manpower. So with added cases, manpower court, it could easily be double that amount of $84,000,000.

My guess is it will end up being $66,666,666 because that is how Satanists roll.

The chaotic time series of US Factory Orders was expected to swing to a big loss (-3.00% MoM) in October (data released today) after a big jump in September and big drop in July (and a big jump in June!).

However, factory orders tumbled even more than expected, down 3.6% MoM - the biggest drop since the COVID lockdowns (April 2020).September was also revised lower (making October's decline even worse) from +2.8% MoM to +2.3% MoM...

The big monthly decline and revisions dragged orders down 2.1% YoY(the biggest drop since Sept 2020). Core factory orders also dropped (-1.2% Mom), leaving them down 2.2% YoY - the eight month in a row of annual declines. The final Durable Goods Orders data for October confirmed the preliminary print plunge down 5.4% MoM.

A millionaire Canadian entrepreneur and his partner are feared dead after two charred bodies were found inside a burned car in the Caribbean island of Dominica.

Daniel Langlois, 66, and Dominique Marchand, both from Quebec, vanished on Friday and the burned vehicle matches a description of their car, local reports say.

Global Affairs Canada acknowledged the deaths of two Canadian citizens on the island but has not named them. Dominica cops are yet to confirm their identities.

'Canadian officials continue to monitor the situation closely, are engaging with local authorities and providing consular assistance. Due to privacy considerations, no further information can be disclosed,' the office said.

Dominica police said the intense fire in the car made identifying the bodies impossible, and they are relying on 'circumstantial evidence to connect them to the missing couple.'

Dominica News Online reported that three suspects were taken into custody in connection with the deaths.

Langlois is known as the founder of Softimage, which created 3D animations software for movies like Jurassic Park, Men in Black and Star Wars.

The entrepreneur sold the company to Microsoft in 1994 for $200 million and went on to found the Daniel Langlois Foundation for the Art, Sciences and Technology.

In October 2022 the couple opened a luxury, off-the-grid resort, Coulibri Ridge, on 200 acres of land on the island, which is located between Guadeloupe and Martinique.

They reportedly worked on the project for 20 years.

Langlois was beloved in Canada and Dominica, with many honoring him on social media following reports of his death.

Canada's minister of Canadian Heritage, Pascale St-Onge wrote: 'Daniel Langlois, a visionary in digital technologies and cinema, has left us. His legacy reflects his innovative spirit. My thoughts are with his loved ones.'

Daoust Dupes, a resident of the island, said on Facebook: 'Today my heart is heavy. I'm angry. I'm in tears. This couple were one of the sweetest who ever graced our shores. They did so much for this island. Investors par excellence. Just ask their employees, heritage enthusiasts, marine, land and wildlife conservationists, animal lovers, the community of Soufriere.

'A real tragedy that will result in more income loss for the people of Dominica. Thanks Daniel Langlois and Dominique Marchand you made this world a better place.'

Travel writer Jim Byers wrote on X: 'Shocked and devastated to hear the news of the deaths of Canadian businessman/visionary Daniel Langlois and his wife, Dominique Marchand. They built the incredible Coulibri Ridge resort on Dominica and had me for a tour and lunch in January. So sad.'

And fan Paul Chato added: 'Daniel Langlois has been found dead in the Dominican Republic. For those who are 3D animators, Langlois pioneered SoftImage 3D, the most advanced character animation software of its time. Reboot was produced with it as was the dinosaur in Jurassic Park. Sad.'

On November 3, the government of Dominica gave Langlois a 'Meritorious Service Award for his contributions to sustainable development and research projects,' as reported by Dominica News Online.

Langlois was a dual Canadian-Dominican citizen.

Hawaiian's shares nearly tripled in value. Traders have priced in the likelihood that the central bank will keep rates unchanged next week, with about 58% betting on rate cuts starting as soon as March 2024, according to the CME Group's FedWatch tool.

However, some analysts have cautioned that markets have been too quick to price in lower interest rates.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday announced for the first time that not only are its air strikes extending to the south of the Gaza Strip, where the bulk of civilians from the north have fled, but it is expanding its ground operations to the whole of Gaza.

Following the collapse of the week-long truce on Friday, spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a press briefing, "The IDF is resuming and expanding the ground operation against Hamas’ strongholds across the whole Gaza Strip."

"Our policy is clear — we will forcefully strike any threat posed against our territory," he emphasized in words that came the day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged "total victory" and that the war will be taken to Hamas "until the end."

He still vowed to "do everything possible" to return the 137 hostages still in Hamas captivity. Contrary to Washington's stance, he batted down a reporter's question about the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) potential role in a post-war Gaza, saying it "pays murderers" and "educate[s] their children to hate Israel and, to my sorrow, to murder Jews, and ultimately for the disappearance of the State of Israel."

"I’m not prepared to delude myself and say that this defective thing, established under the Oslo Accords in a terrible mistake," he said of the idea of the PA governing a post-war Gaza.

Microsoft Inked Deals With Chinese Communist Party Propaganda Outlets, Documents Show

Microsoft helped Chinese state-run media outlets disseminate propaganda as part of previously unreported partnership agreements, documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon show.

The nation’s second largest corporation signed collaboration deals with state-run Chinese media outlets including China Daily and People’s Daily, the latter of which is the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese government. Summaries of the deal state Microsoft would provide China Daily with technology that lets the paper target potential readers and gave the People’s Daily access to an artificial intelligence bot specially designed to be controlled and censored by the Chinese Communist Party.

The deals have not been widely reported outside of China, nor have the financial terms been disclosed. A spokeswoman for Microsoft said both agreements "expired years ago and were not renewed." But experts say the fact that Microsoft inked the deals at all is a major win for the Chinese Communist Party.

"These are major propaganda outlets that publish outright falsehoods attacking the ideas of democracy, attacking the very concepts that undergird our society, and yet an American company is working to spread this," said Geoffrey Cain, policy director at the Tech Integrity Project, which fights Chinese Communist Party influence in American tech companies. "The purpose of all this is to show the Chinese Communist Party that it’s firmly on the side of China and the Chinese system," Cain added.

Both the China Daily and the People’s Daily are widely considered propaganda tools for the Chinese Communist Party. China Daily is published by the party’s Central Propaganda Department. The State Department in 2020 determined the People’s Daily’s parent company was "substantially owned or effectively controlled" by the Chinese government. In an announcement for the designation, then-secretary of state Mike Pompeo referred to the paper as one of the "mouthpieces of the Chinese Communist Party."

Microsoft struck the agreement with China Daily in September 2016, according to a news release from the outlet. China Daily said Microsoft would provide technology to help enable the outlet to target and profile users and establish the "Media Smart Cloud Innovation Technology Laboratory."

The mission of the "Media Smart Cloud Innovation Technology Laboratory" is unclear, although it appears related to the Chinese New Media Laboratory. A Chinese media scholar wrote in 2019 that the Chinese New Media Laboratory "provides data support for research on [China’s] international communication effects."

The announcement of the deal was met with fanfare in Beijing, where executives from Microsoft and China Daily came together for a signing ceremony and photo op.

Fighting continues to expand across the Gaza Strip as the Israeli military claims that ground forces are “close to completing their operation in northern Gaza.” Dozens of Israeli tanks enter southern part of besieged Gaza Strip, while Israeli advance was reported in the center of the enclave.

According to Israeli Brigadier General Hisham Ibrahim, commander of the Israeli armored corps, “the goals in the northern part have almost been achieved”. The Israeli military officially claimed the expansion of ground operations in other parts of the Gaza Strip “with the sole purpose of destroying Hamas.” The day before, the head of the IDF General Staff claimed that the army had switched to active combat operations in the southern part of the Gaza Strip. He clarified that the fighting would be conducted with the same intensity as in the northern part of the enclave.

On December 4, Israel confirmed destruction of the Ministry of Justice and the Supreme Court in the Gaza Strip, which were claimed to be the symbols of the Hamas rule in the enclave.

The IDF reported strikes on 200 Hamas military installations in the Gaza Strip on the night of December 4. According to a spokesperson for the UNICEF, the southern Gaza Strip is currently facing its “worst bombardment” since the beginning of Israel’s brutal aggression against the Palestinian territory.

In the morning, heavy bombing resumed in the Khan Yunis residential areas. According to local reports, an unprecedented number of civilians was killed, exceeding all previous days after the ceasefire ended.

More civilian casualties were reported as a result of Israeli strikes throughout the Gaza Strip, most of which hit various districts of the Gaza City. Some of the targets included:

Salah Al-Din School, where thousands of Palestinians have taken refuge;

UNRWA school, which is housing displaced people in Beit Lahia in the northern Gaza Strip

the vicinity of Kamal Adwan Hospital in the Beit Lahia

hospital in the Al-Rimal area

a house in the middle of Al-Jalaa Street

homes in the Al-Qasaib neighborhood in the Jabalia camp

a house on Al-Nafaq Street in Gaza City

a house in the Zarqa area

an apartment in the Shujaiya neighborhood

a mosque in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood

several more Palestinians were killed in fresh Israeli airstrikes on Nuseirat Refugee Camp in the central Gaza Strip.

one more Palestinian journalist and dozens of civilians were killed in Israeli airstrike on Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip.

The number of casualties from Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip has risen to 15,899 since October 7th. 42,000 more were reportedly wounded, according to the Ministry of Health. The number of confirmed casualties is likely to increase sharply in the coming days.

In its turn, the Israeli army acknowledged the deaths of three more soldiers in Gaza. The current death toll from the ground invasion is 75 Israeli servicemen.

Global factory inventories up 30% in 4 years as China slows

Big manufacturers worldwide are struggling to chip away at inventories that accumulated during the pandemic, even with supply chains returning to normal, as economic weakness in markets like China saps demand.

Inventories totaled $2.12 trillion at the end of September, up 28% from the pre-COVID level of December 2019, based on a tally of 4,353 companies with comparable QUICK-FactSet data. Many businesses built up their inventories during the pandemic as a strategic decision in response to supply chain disruptions, with high material costs also playing a role.

The March 2023 figure of $2.2 trillion was the highest in 10 years, and the September tally was still up 2% on the year despite efforts to reduce excess stock. Inventories are a leading indicator of economic activity. The slow pace of inventory turnover threatens to depress post-pandemic global growth. Companies needed 87.2 days to run through their stock as of the July-September quarter - the highest figure in the past decade, excluding April-June 2020, when sales plummeted due to the pandemic. Industries with especially long turnover times included industrial machinery, with a 10-year high of 112 days, and electronic equipment like controls, at 140 days. More than 70% of the 40 or so industries examined had longer turnover periods last quarter than a year earlier.

Slowing sales in China have dragged on many companies.

Japanese robot maker Fanuc has noted that inventory adjustment for its factory automation equipment is taking longer than expected with capital spending in China still in a "wait-and-see" mode. Air conditioner maker Daikin Industries said that "with the difficult conditions in the real estate sector, clearing distributor inventor has been difficult industrywide." Europe's economy is also showing signs of cooling, hitting companies like Swedish industrial machinery maker Sandvik, which has said it is still unclear on how long its inventory adjustment will continue. 

Inventories are high at Japanese construction equipment maker Komatsu's European distributors, and orders there have declined.

Even in North America, where the economy is relatively strong, Japan's Mitsubishi Electric has seen sales in its air conditioner and appliance segment fall as distributor inventories accumulate. U.S.-based Cummins faces a similar slowdown in sales of construction equipment engines due to high distributor stock.

The inventory overhang puts a weight on cash flow. For 4,076 companies with comparable data, their most recent annual net profits totaled $945.9 billion, up 42% from pre-COVID levels. But operating cash flow grew more slowly, rising 24% to $1.38 trillion, with higher inventories dragging down the total by $250 billion.

Let's not over-complicate what's straightforward: we're becoming more prosperous when our wages / labor buy more goods and services, most especially the essentials of life: shelter, food, energy, utilities, transportation, higher education, healthcare and childcare. If the money we have left after paying for essentials buys more discretionary goods and services, we're getting a lagniappe of prosperity.

If the non-discretionary essentials are consuming a greater percentage of our earned income, we're becoming less prosperous, i.e. we're poorer. Those tasked with persuading us that gradual impoverishment is actually soaring prosperity have near-infinite statistical means to obscure this straightforward measure of prosperity: the purchasing power of labor / earnings.

If our hours of work buy less non-discretionary goods and services, we're getting poorer.

That software, TVs and airline fares are cheaper is meaningless because they are occasional discretionary purchases that make up a tiny slice of total cost-of-living expenditures. The status quo cheerleaders in the Ministry of Truth ignore the $5,000 annual cost increases in essentials while trumpeting the $100 decline in occasional discretionary purchases.

Your vacation cost you 100 more hours of work, but you save $50 on airfare, so it all evens out. Um, no. The only metric that is an accurate measure of prosperity and impoverishment is the purchasing power of your labor / earnings. Everything else is noise designed to obscure inconvenient reality.

Not surprisingly, it's difficult to get accurate data on past real-world costs of essentials. What we hope to find is the actual prices paid in previous years and the median wages paid at the same time.

This data gives us an accurate measure of purchasing power: how many hours of work did it take to pay rent, pay healthcare insurance, buy a used car, etc. This is the kind of table we hope to find: rents paid in Hawaii by decade.

Since I lived in Honolulu, the home of the majority of the state's population, and actively sought rental housing in the 1970s, I have knowledge of actual rents, and can attest these numbers are in the ballpark for one-bedroom apartments.

These variations were statistically significant and highly unlikely to occur naturally by chance. The data strongly suggested a causality between the vaccine and the reported deaths.

Additionally, Winston examined the variation in mortality rates among different vaccinators. He identified the top 10 vaccinators with the highest mortality rates, highlighting the inconsistency in vaccine administrations and potential flaws in the vaccination process.

Finally, Winston uncovered clusters of deaths that occurred among groups of individuals who had received the vaccine in the same location and around the same time. The presence of these clusters statistically indicated a problem with the vaccine, as the likelihood of them occurring by chance was extremely low.

A Windows Update bug is renaming everyone's printers to HP M101-M106

The reason behind the strange HP Smart App installations has finally been found.

A few days ago, we spotted that the HP Smart App was being installed on people's PCs without their consent. Even worse, the app would reappear if users tried to uninstall it or clean-installed Windows. Now, the cause has finally been identified: a recent Windows 10 and 11 update is renaming everyone's printers to "HP LaserJet M101-M106" regardless of what model it actually is.

Windows Update's strange printer bug

As reported on Windows Latest, the latest update for Windows 10 and 11 seems to think that people's printers are an HP LaserJet model, regardless of their actual brand. It's believed that the bug appeared after HP pushed its latest metadata to Windows Update, but something went awry in the code and caused other printers to be labeled as HP LaserJet printers.

This explains why the HP Smart App has been sneaking onto people's computers without their consent. A key part of Windows Update is keeping third-party drivers and devices updated, including downloading any apps that the devices depend on. After the printer metadata incorrectly identified everyone's printers as HP LaserJet printers, Windows installed all the software needed for an HP printer to work smoothly, including the HP Smart App.

Fortunately, the bug only affects the metadata for the printer. While the printer may show up with a different name on your system, you should still be able to send print jobs to it. Microsoft has since removed the fault metadata from Windows Update, so anyone performing a clean install from now on should get their original printer's name back and stop the HP Smart App from re-downloading.

If you're not keen on performing a clean install just to reset a printer's name, Microsoft should be releasing an update in the future that corrects this problem. And if all this is too much hassle, you can always grab a portable printer for phones and skip all the mess.

German judge lets 8 men who gang-raped girl walk free

AGerman court delivered its verdict Tuesday concerning those responsible for the barbaric September 2020 gang-rape of a 15-year-old German girl in the northern city of Hamburg.

Of the eleven men initially charged in relation to the gang-rape of the minor — only four of whom were technically German — two were acquitted. Nine were found guilty. Eight got probation, not exceeding two years. Only one is headed to prison.

There has been significant backlash following the release of eight convicted rapists, prompting officials to condemn critiques of the judgment, particularly those of an "anti-migrant" nature.

What's the background?

Spiegel reported that the victim attended a party on the festival lawn in Hamburg's over 350-acre city park on Sept. 19, 2020. Four of the men dragged the girl, then intoxicated, into a bush and raped her. One of the rapists added insult to grievous injury and stole her phone and wallet.

Two other men then joined in, raping the victim.

After the initial series of attacks, the victim reportedly began stumbling away, right into the arms of yet another rapist from the pack. The rapist who intercepted her near the festival meadow was then joined by three additional rapists, who are suspected to have all similarly sexually assaulted the victim. Owing to the uncertainty about whether the final three all raped the victim, one rapist was acquitted.

The brutal gang rape lasted nearly three hours.

According to German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, after her violent dehumanization, the victim managed to get onto a train. However, her aggressors, understanding that she was traveling alone, followed her. Fortunately, she fled to a group of people who "recognized her condition and called the police."

DNA evidenced implicated nine of the rapists. There was also video evidence, but Spiegel indicated that the footage was "irretrievably deleted shortly after the crime" such that neither investigators nor the court could confirm what genetic evidence made abundantly clear.

An eleventh defendant charged with aiding and abetting and filming the rape was acquitted earlier this year.

Multiple federal agencies are warning that Iran-linked hackers have been targeting U.S. water systems and other industries that use programmable-logic controllers (PLC) made by Israeli firm Unitronics, as the Israel–Hamas war simmers in the background.

Hackers affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) have engaged in "malicious cyber activity" targeting PLC operational technology devices used in the U.S. water and wastewater systems sector, and in other industries including energy, food, and beverage manufacturing, since at least Nov. 22, the agencies said in a Dec. 1 alert.

The agencies that issued the warning include the FBI, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and the National Security Agency (NSA), with the Israel National Cyber Directorate (INCD) joining in the advisory.

This IRGC-linked cyberattack group (known variously as CyberAv3ngers, CyberAveng3rs, or Cyber Avengers) has been compromising default credentials in Unitronics devices since at least Nov. 22, the agencies said.

After hacking the PLC devices in multiple states, CyberAv3ngers left the following defacement message: “You have been hacked, down with Israel. Every equipment ‘made in Israel’ is CyberAv3ngers legal target.”

The cyber group has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks against critical infrastructure in Israel starting in 2020; it has recently turned its attention to targets in the United States, a key ally of Israel as it battles the Hamas terror group in response to the Oct. 7 attacks against Israel.

One high-profile attack by CyberAv3ngers targeted a water authority near Pittsburgh on Nov. 25, prompting congressional lawmakers to demand an investigation by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and triggering the latest multi-agency warning that other water and sewage-treatment utilities, and other industries, may be vulnerable.

The PLC devices regulate processes including pressure, temperature, and fluid flow, according to Unitronics.

Pennsylvania Water Utility Attacked

A cyberattack by the Iran-linked group on Nov. 25 targeted the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, forcing the utility to switch to manual operations; officials said water quality wasn't compromised.

"The affected municipality’s water authority immediately took the system offline and switched to manual operations—there is no known risk to the municipality’s drinking water or water supply," the CISA said in a Nov. 28 notice.

While water quality wasn't affected this time, the agency said that such cyberattacks do have the potential to threaten the ability of water and wastewater systems to provide clean drinking water to residents and to effectively manage wastewater.

Silver Looks Like a Real Bargain Right Now

At the current price, silver is a real bargain.

Gold went on a run late last week, setting an all-time record high last Friday and breaking the $2,100 level for a brief time in overseas trading Sunday night. Silver also rallied but continues to lag behind gold. In fact, silver looks significantly underpriced based on both its historical relationship with gold and the supply/demand dynamics. The silver-gold ratio is currently over 81-1. That means it takes more than 81 ounces of silver to buy one ounce of gold. To put the current ratio into perspective, in the modern era, the silver-gold ratio has averaged between 40:1 and 60:1. Historically, the ratio has always returned to that mean. And when it does, it does it with a vengeance. The ratio fell to 30-1 in 2011 and below 20-1 in 1979. When the spread gets this wide, silver doesn’t just outperform gold, it goes on a massive run in a short time. Since January 2000, this has happened four times. As this chart shows, the snapback is swift and strong. Here’s some historical perspective.

Geologists estimate that there are approximately 19 ounces of silver for every ounce of gold in the earth’s crust, with a ratio of approximately 11.2 ounces of silver to each ounce of gold that has ever been mined. Interestingly, the silver-gold ratio in ancient Egypt was 1:1.

In 1792, the gold/silver price ratio was fixed by law in the United States at 15:1. France mandated a ratio of 15.5:1 in 1803. Faced with the challenges of a bi-metallic monetary system with fixed exchange rates and the aftermath of a worldwide financial crisis, the US Congress passed the Coinage Act of 1873. Following the lead of other Western nations, including England, Portugal, Canada, and Germany, this act formally demonetized silver and established a gold standard for the United States. With silver playing a smaller role as a monetary metal, the silver-gold ratio gradually spread. Since the world went to a total fiat money system, there seems to be some correlation between the silver-gold ratio and central bank money creation. During periods of central bank money-printing, the gap tends to shrink. For instance, it plummeted in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis as the Fed engaged in extreme monetary policy.
