In a call this week, Crown Prince Mohammed and Biden “agreed on pursuing broader diplomatic efforts to maintain stability across the region and prevent the conflict from expanding,” the White House said in a statement Tuesday, which did not mention discussions about a ground invasion.

After a period of deeply strained relations, Crown Prince Mohammed and Biden found common ground earlier this year over exploring a potential deal in which Saudi Arabia would recognize Israel and establish diplomatic ties. Biden and his top aides were eager to reach an agreement, arguing that it would reshape the Middle East. But they also acknowledged the many difficulties in the diplomacy.

Many Arab governments, including Saudi Arabia, have long refused to establish a diplomatic link with Israel before the creation of a Palestinian state. But over the past decade, that calculus has shifted as the region’s authoritarian leaders weigh negative public opinion toward a relationship with Israel against the economic and security benefits it could offer — and what they might obtain from the United States in return.

In 2020, Bahrain, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates established ties with Israel under an agreement called the Abraham Accords, brokered by the Trump administration. Those deals were unpopular among ordinary people in the region — where the Palestinian cause remains a potent rallying cry — and only grew more so over time as the Israeli government turned further right and expanded settlements in the West Bank.

From the start, the discussions between the Biden administration and Saudi Arabia, the Arab world’s political heavyweight, were more expansive and delicate than the Trump-era talks over those earlier agreements.

Saudi officials said they would only be willing to consider normalization with Israel in exchange for benefits to be delivered by the United States: a U.S.-Saudi mutual defense pact, American support for a Saudi civilian nuclear program and more U.S. weapons sales.

U.S. and Saudi officials also held discussions about concessions that Israel might need to make to the Palestinians. But in an interview with Fox News last month, Crown Prince Mohammed seemed to signal that they might fall short of Palestinian statehood.

Addenbrooke's Hospital: Baby who died was not given routine vitamin

A coroner has found there was "gross failure in medical care amounting to neglect" in the death of a baby who was not given a routine vitamin after birth.

William Moris-Patto was born at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge in July 2020 but died seven weeks later having suffered a brain bleed.

Coroner Lorna Skinner KC said he would not have died had he been given vitamin K, needed for blood clotting.

The hospital trust has apologised.

The inquest, held in Huntingdon, heard William was born premature at 34 weeks, on 27 July, and his mother had specifically asked about whether William had received a vitamin K shot.

"So far as she can recall, when she asked if William had had all the necessary postnatal checks and care, a female member of the... staff said 'yes, everything's been done'," Ms Skinner said.

William stayed in hospital for two weeks, when he was discharged with a nasogastric tube, but became unwell overnight on 11 September and had been sick.

His parents, from Chatteris, rang the NHS 111 service, which in turn led to an ambulance being called and William was taken to Addenbrooke's.

Ms Skinner said surgery was performed on William but clinicians "believed the damage to his brain was too great and he would never recover", and he died on 17 September.

The coroner said she had heard from his mother Naomi Moris that William's death was "nothing short of devastating".

Since its initial discovery almost a century ago, vitamin K has been labeled as both lifesaving and malignancy causing. This has led to debate of not only its use in general but also regarding its appropriate dose and route. In this article, we review through a historical lens the past 90 years of newborn vitamin K from its discovery through to its modern use of preventing vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB). Although researchers in surveillance studies have shown considerable reductions in VKDB following intramuscular vitamin K prophylaxis, ongoing barriers to the universal uptake of vitamin K prophylaxis remain. Reviewing the history of newborn vitamin K provides an opportunity for a greater understanding of the current barriers to uptake that we face. Although at times difficult, improving this understanding may allow us to address contentious issues related to parental and health professional beliefs and values as well as improve overall communication. The ultimate goal is to improve and maintain the uptake of vitamin K to prevent VKDB in newborns.

The history of vitamin K dates back to 1929, when the Danish biochemist Henrik Dam (1895–1976) observed that chicks fed fat- and cholesterol-free diets developed subcutaneous and muscular hemorrhages.2 He subsequently proposed that this fat-soluble active compound was different from the other known fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E, and that this new anti-hemorrhagic factor should be named vitamin K (in reference to koagulation from the German and Scandinavian languages).3

Subsequently, in the early 1940s, Edward Doisy confirmed the structure and identity of the 2 naturally occurring forms of vitamin K, phylloquinone (vitamin K1) and menaquinone (vitamin K2; Fig 1).4,5 For these discoveries, Dam2 and Doisy were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (1943).3

After the Swedish experiments of the 1940s, it was not until 1961 that the American Academy of Pediatrics first recommended IM vitamin K prophylaxis immediately after birth for all newborns.19 Now, nearly all developed countries have implemented vitamin K prophylaxis programs, usually recommending 1 mg of IM vitamin K (Konakion MM) at birth or 0.5 mg in preterm infants. If parents decline an IM injection, an alternative option is 2 mg of Konakion MM orally at birth and again at 3 to 5 days, followed by an additional dose at 4 to 6 weeks of age.20 This option is likely less effective than IM21 and certainly more complicated. Because of this efficacy issue (as well as availability), the American Academy of Pediatrics, in contrast to some countries, still does not have a policy statement on the use of oral prophylaxis.22

The Ghosts of Gamma Cas

Gamma Cassiopeiae shines high in northern autumn evening skies. It's the brightest spiky star in this telescopic field of view toward the constellation Cassiopeia. Gamma Cas shares the ethereal-looking scene with ghostly interstellar clouds of gas and dust, IC 59 (top left) and IC 63. About 600 light-years distant, the clouds aren't actually ghosts. They are slowly disappearing though, eroding under the influence of energetic radiation from hot and luminous gamma Cas. Gamma Cas is physically located only 3 to 4 light-years from the nebulae. Slightly closer to gamma Cas, IC 63 is dominated by red H-alpha light emitted as hydrogen atoms ionized by the star's ultraviolet radiation recombine with electrons. Farther from the star, IC 59 shows proportionally less H-alpha emission but more of the characteristic blue tint of dust reflected star light. The cosmic stage spans over 1 degree or 10 light-years at the estimated distance of gamma Cas and friends.

In what one scientist described as an “admission of epic proportions,” Health Canada on Thursday confirmed the presence of DNA contamination in Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines, and also confirmed that Pfizer did not disclose the contamination to the public health authority.

The DNA contamination includes the Simian Virus 40 (SV40) promoter and enhancer Pfizer did not previously disclose and that some experts say is a cancer risk due to potential integration with the human genome.

Health Canada, the country’s public health authority, told The Epoch Times that while Pfizer provided the full DNA sequences of the plasmid in its vaccine at the time of the initial submission, the vaccine maker “did not specifically identify the SV40 sequence.”

As reported earlier, Adam Guillette, the President of Accuracy in Media (AIM), had his Florida home swatted in the early morning hours on Friday.

Swatting is a criminal harassment act of deceiving an emergency service (via such means as hoaxing an emergency services dispatcher) into sending a police or emergency service response team to another person’s address.

The armed response came after law enforcement received a false tip that Guillette was allegedly threatening his wife with a firearm, the New York Post reported.

AIM, is a conservative watchdog organization with its goal “to expose media bias, corruption, and public policy failings. Our organization empowers individuals to hold journalists as well as public and private officials accountable to achieve a well-informed free society.”

AIM recently launched a public awareness campaign that displayed the names of Harvard University students who signed a letter condemning Israel in the aftermath of an October 7th attack by the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raged against Israel in a speech given before a pro-Palestinian rally on Saturday in Istanbul. He said he is preparing to introduce Israel as a "war criminal" on a world stage, at a moment the debate over Gaza continues heating up at the United Nations.

Erdogan said: "Israel, we will also declare you as a war criminal to the world, we are preparing for it, and we will introduce Israel to the world as a war criminal," according to a state broadcaster. Footage of the event shows that the turnout was huge, in the hundreds of thousands or possibly over 100,000 people gathered in the capital.

He stressed that the West is busy justifying the massacre of innocent people in Gaza, as the civilian death toll soars, saying "Israel is committing war crimes" as an "occupier." He added: the "West owes you, but Türkiye does not owe you."

"Those shedding crocodile tears for civilians killed in the Ukraine-Russia war are silently watching the deaths of thousands of innocent children in Gaza," he critiqued further, highlighting the double standard.

"I am asking West, do you want to create another Crusader War atmosphere?" Erdogan questioned, before saying provocatively: "The main culprit behind the massacre unfolding in Gaza is the West."

"Of course, every country has the right to defend itself, but where is justice? There is no defense but an open, and vicious massacre going on in Gaza." He went after Western elites and their ability to dress up everything they say in human rights rhetoric but which proves shallow:

This week the Palestinian Ministry of Housing issued a grim figure, saying that 20,000 buildings and homes in Gaza have been destroyed over several days of intensified Israeli airstrikes. Turkish media has tallied that in total since Oct. 7, over 200,000 homes and buildings have been leveled.

Last week saw a subtle but portentous development. China hosted a global gathering of over 140 countries—70 percent of the world’s nations—in Beijing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Not on the guest list: the United States, most NATO member nations, and other American allies such as Israel, Japan, South Korea, and, of course, Taiwan.

The world continues to focus on, and reel from, events in Israel and Gaza. Thus, many people will ignore or shrug at the news of this convocation. They see no connection between the Beijing meeting and the burgeoning Middle East disaster.

They should reconsider. With the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), few things happen merely by coincidence. Beijing’s hosting of more than 140 invitees may be related, in timing and perhaps more, to the recent surprise assault on Israel. Many lament Israel’s “intelligence failure” but do not contemplate the more sinister explanation: an intelligence penetration. Are Mossad and Shin Bet somehow immune from harboring a Kim Philby, an Aldrich Ames, or a Robert Hanssen? The New York Times reported on Oct. 13 that Hamas had “extraordinary awareness of Israel’s secrets and weaknesses.” From whom?

Many point the finger at Iran, which is using Hamas as its catspaw to bait its mortal enemy into warfare. But an event this momentous—one of the world’s most advanced and alert countries caught off-guard, suffering 1,400 fatalities, some multiple of that injured, approximately 155 hostages, and the prospect of an imminent bloodbath in Gaza—is unlikely to be a solo opus by a single Jew-hating country. Especially when we know who this Jew-hating country’s criminal associates are.

It is possible that Iran, though fully culpable, is a willing participant in a wider, deeper scheme, perhaps conceived, but almost certainly known and approved elsewhere.

The data is clear and consistent. I challenge any qualified scientist to challenge this data in an open public debate.

Executive summary

The irresponsible attacks by an LA Times journalist Michael Hiltzik (see Column: Why anti-vaxxers are pretending a flawed study on vaccine deaths has been vindicated) on MSU Professor Mark Skidmore’s paper motivated me to run my own survey of my readers to see what the actual harm numbers really are.

Over 10,000 readers responded.

The results were not anonymous. To respond and be counted, you had to include your contact information.

This is a huge benefit compared to a “scientific survey.” In a “scientific survey,” you normally aren’t allowed to collect the identity of the responder, so it must be anonymous. So in a “scientific survey,” the peer-reviewers cannot verify whether the research was telling the truth or not. In my survey, they can. Which one is more trustable? After all a key attribute of “scientific evidence” is that is can be independently verified. Mine can. Relatively few published studies (on most topics) cannot be because they never disclose the record level data.

The survey clearly showed that the COVID vaccines have killed 3.5 times as many people as COVID. This is a disaster.

I’ve had expert statisticians and epidemiologists review the survey, the methodology, and the results. None could find any errors.

I’m willing to put a million dollars on the table that this is right and that the vaccines have killed more people than COVID. Any takers? If not, why not?

When I called Professor Norman Fenton and informed him of the 3.5X figure he calmly replied “I’m not surprised.”

The results of this survey are entirely consistent with the surveys by others as well as individual anecdotes that would have been very unlikely for me to have located if the vaccine didn’t kill at least 3.5X more people than the virus.

Therefore accusations of “the survey was biased” are simply “hand-waving” arguments with absolutely no evidentiary basis of support. Could there be bias? Of course. Is the bias significant is the question! Since these people are anti-vaxxers, they are simply less likely to vaccinate and so the number of vaccine injuries will be LOWER than an unbiased group who vaccinates. So yes, there may be bias, but if anything the bias suggests that the actual ratio is higher than 3.5. I’m happy to have that discussion. Bring it on.

The best way to challenge these results is to show data that is 100% independently verifiable (which government statistics are not). So they will have to show us their survey and their verifiable anecdotes supporting their hypothesis. No one has any interest in doing that for some reason. These people are all perfectly content with having the number be “unknown.” I have a big problem with that.

Slovak PM Robert Fico has questioned the wisdom of the bloc furnishing the country with another €50 billion

Ukraine is “one of the most corrupt countries in the world,” Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico told reporters on Friday following an EU summit in Brussels, raising doubts about the bloc’s unprecedented funding to Kiev.

In particular, Fico questioned the wisdom of an additional €50 billion ($52.9 billion) earmarked for Ukraine in the EU’s proposed budget, asking rhetorically, “Did the financing of Ukraine change the outcome of this war?So let’s invest another 50 billion, and it doesn’t matter what happens?”

The prime minister agreed to increase Slovakia’s contribution to the EU by about €400 million over the next four years,but only if the EU could promise it would not be stolen by Kiev.

“Ukraine is among the most corrupt countries in the world and we are conditioning what is excessive financial support on guarantees that European money (including Slovak) not be embezzled,” Fico told assembled journalists.

Noting that the EU had no “peace plan” and that the leaders of several member countries had been “driven into a dead end” due to a lack of coherence on how to move forward, he said that a blank check to Ukraine would be a hard sell back home in Slovakia.

“If the strategy is to continue to pour money there, €1.5 billion per month without any result, and we have to cut our own resources? After all, we have huge problems, and public money is in a difficult state,” Fico explained.

In return for Slovakia’s increased contribution, Fico also required that there be no cuts to funds intended to support farmers, that the increased budget would be used to fight illegal immigration and increase EU competitiveness, that Slovak companies receive some of the contracts to rebuild Ukraine, and that the restoration of border infrastructure between the two nations be prioritized.

The Slovak PM is not the only EU leader who has balked at the bloc's continuing efforts to bolster Kiev financially. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban declared at the summit on Friday that the strategy of sending billions in aid had failed. “The Ukrainians will not win on the battlefield,” he said, vowing not to endorse the budget revision allocating another €50 billion.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto earlier this week condemned what he described as theEU’s “war psychosis,”accusing Brussels of planning for four years of conflict with massive arms spending, including possible military investment in Ukraine, without any funding or effort put toward resolving hostilities.

A 3.7-magnitude earthquake hit San Francisco on Friday evening, with an epicenter under the city’s international airport, the United States Geological Survey said.

The quake struck about eight miles beneath the airport at 6:38 p.m. local time, the U.S.G.S. said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage at the airport or elsewhere.

For some people across the San Francisco Bay Area, the quake produced a thud, as if something large were hitting a nearby building.

There were no active travel alerts related to the earthquake on the San Francisco International Airport’s website as of about 10:30 p.m. on Friday. A spokesman for the airport did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The earthquake was minor by California standards but notable for its location directly beneath a major airport that lies near the San Andreas Fault, a major one that runs from Northern to Southern California.

The airport, which served about 20 million passengers last year, has an air traffic control tower that is designed to withstand a magnitude 8.0 earthquake.

What does Israel want to achieve from this conflict, which Netaniayhu himself announces will be long and painful? The IDF is attacking Gaza from the air, land and sea. Supplies, electricity and connections have been almost completely compromised and to understand what is really happening we will have to wait for this phase of the conflict to end, a phase which for the Israeli Minister of Defense is not yet a land invasion.

For every military analyst it is now clear that such a deployment of forces does not only have the objective of eliminating Hamas. So, how far does the Tel Aviv government want to go?

According to some analysts, one of the options on the table is to destroy the underground network of tunnels, the real skeleton of Hamas’ operating system. The idea would be to flood those tunnels. At the end of such an operation, it would transform Gaza into a gigantic lake of death and destruction.

If this operation appears anti-human, there is a document recently published by the think tank Misgav (The Institute for National Security and Zionist Strategy) which paints a political objective that has nothing to envy of the “final solution” of Nazi memory.

JERUSALEM (AP) — As an Israeli ground offensive in the Gaza Strip looms in its most devastating war yet with Hamas, one of the greatest threats to both its troops and the 2.3 million Palestinians trapped inside the seaside enclave is buried deep underground.

An extensive labyrinth of tunnels built by the Hamas militant group stretches across the densely populated strip, hiding fighters, their rocket arsenal and over 200 hostages they now hold after an unprecedented Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

Clearing and collapsing those tunnels will be crucial if Israel seeks to dismantle Hamas. But fighting in densely populated urban areas and moving underground could strip the Israeli military of some of its technological advantages while giving an edge to Hamas both above and below ground.

“I usually say it’s like walking down the street waiting to get punched in the face,” said John Spencer, a retired U.S. Army major and the chair of Urban Warfare Studies at the Modern War Institute at West Point.

Urban defenders, he added, “had time to think about where they are going to be and there’s millions of hidden locations they can be in. They get to choose the time of the engagement — you can’t see them but they can see you.”

Overnight on Saturday, the Israeli military said its warplanes struck 150 underground Hamas targets in northern Gaza, describing them as tunnels, combat spaces and other underground infrastructure. The strikes — what appeared to be Israel's most significant bombardment of tunnels yet — came as it ramped up its ground operations in Gaza.

WHAT THE PAST HAS SHOWN

Tunnel warfare has been a feature of history, from the Roman siege of the ancient Greek city of Ambracia to Ukrainian fighters holding off Russian forces in 24 kilometers (15 miles) of Soviet-era tunnels beneath Mariupol’s Azovstal Iron and Steel Works for some 80 days in 2022.

The reason is simple:tunnel battles are considered some of the most difficult for armies to fight. A determined enemy in a tunnel or cave system can pick where the fight will start — and often determine how it will end — given the abundant opportunities for ambush.

That's especially true in the Gaza Strip, home to Hamas’ tunnel system that Israel has named the “Metro.”

When Israel and Egypt imposed a punishing blockade on Gaza after Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007, the militant group expanded construction of its tunnel network to smuggle in weapons and other contraband from Egypt. While Egypt later shut down most of those cross-border tunnels, Hamas is now believed to have a massive underground network stretching throughout Gaza, allowing it to transport weapons, supplies and fighters out of the sight of Israeli drones.

GENEVA, Oct 28 (Reuters) - The Swiss National Bank may need to tighten its monetary policy further depending on how inflation develops in the country, Vice-Chairman Martin Schlegel said in an interview published on Saturday in Swiss newspaper SonntagsBlick.

SNB last month held its policy interest rate unchanged at 1.75%, noting that inflation - at 1.6% in August and within the central bank's target range of 0-2% - had eased. It cannot be ruled out that further tightening of monetary policy may be necessary," Schlegel was quoted as saying. "This depends on how inflation develops."

The vast majority of economists polled by Reuters last month, however, said that the SNB was done with interest rate hikes. Schlegel said growth would probably be subdued next year and that unemployment was expected to rise slightly.

The Swiss franc hit its strongest level since 2015 against the euro last Friday, on the back of investor risk aversion due to the war in the Middle East, as well as broad weakness in the euro. ad

"Our country is perceived as so stable that our currency appreciates in times of crisis," Schlegel said.

"But of course this also has consequences that are less desirable. This makes it even more difficult for export companies to be successful in economically uncertain times."

Schlegel added that the central bank was drawing lessons from the government's move to back a rescue deal for Credit Suisse in March, which rattled the Swiss banking sector and caused wider market panic.
