Congress may let jet owners like Elon Musk block flight info

Elon Musk and other private jet owners may soon be able to stop the public from learning about their flights, thanks to the FAA reauthorization bill recently passed by the House.

Why it matters: Such information has proven useful to journalists and other researchers — but some plane owners, including Musk, have argued that it can pose a security risk.

The big picture: Private plane information has long been public record.

But, until the relatively recent advent of online flight trackers, it was cumbersome for most people to learn who owned what plane or where it had flown.

The FAA already has some options for private plane owners who want to block flight information from being shared with trackers. Many owners also use LLCs and other corporate ownership structures to shield their identities.

Details: A provision tucked inside the FAA reauthorization bill would require the agency to establish a process to let jet owners request to keep their planes' registration numbers, and other information, private.

The five-year FAA reauthorization passed the House by an overwhelming 351-69 vote in July, and now must be reconciled with the Senate before heading to President Biden's desk for his signature.

Flashback: Musk last year threatened to sue the creator of a Twitter account that tracked his private jet's activities, and permanently suspended the account.

WikiLeaks documents reveal CIA agents were given cover identities and diplomatic passports to enter the country. The base was used to develop hacking tools as part of the CIA's massive digital arsenal.

WikiLeaks released a trove of CIA documents on Tuesday that it claimed revealed details of its secret hacking arsenal.

The release included 8,761 documents that it claimed revealed details of "malware, viruses, trojans, weaponized 'zero day' exploits, malware remote control systems and associated documentation."

The leaks purportedly revealed that a top secret CIA unit used the German city of Frankfurt am Main as the starting point for numerous hacking attacks on Europe, China and the Middle East.

Frankfurt base

WikiLeaks reported that the group developed trojans and other malicious software in the American Consulate General Office, the largest US consulate in the world. The programs focused on targets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The documents revealed that CIA experts worked in the building under cover and included advice for life in Germany.

"Do not leave anything electronic or sensitive unattended in your room," it told employees, also advising them to enjoy Lufthansa's free alcohol "in moderation."

The Frankfurt hackers, part of the Center for Cyber Intelligence Europe, were said to be given diplomatic passports and a State Department identity. It instructed employees how to safely enter Germany. A WikiLeaks tweet published an section of the Frankfurt information.

The consulate was the focus of a German investigation into US intelligence capabilities following the 2013 revelation that NSA agents had tapped Chancellor Angela Merkel's phone.

German daily "Süddeutsche Zeitung" reported the building was known to be home to a vast network of intelligence personnel including CIA agents, NSA spies, military secret service personnel, Department of Homeland Security employees and Secret Service employees. It reported the Americans had also established a dense network of outposts and shell companies in Frankfurt.

Televisions turned into bugs

An intelligence expert who examined the dump, Rendition Infosec founder Jake Williams, told news agency Associated Press the documents appeared legitimate.

Bob Ayers, a retired US intelligence official currently working as a security analyst told AP the release was "real bad" for the agency.

Jonathan Liu, a spokesman for the CIA, told AP: "We do not comment on the authenticity or content of purported intelligence documents."

According to WikiLeaks the documents revealed that the CIA could remotely activate certain Samsung smart televisions equipped with cameras and microphones to turn them into bugs.

Smartphones hacked

WikiLeaks also claimed that if the CIA had hacked a cell phone, it could then bypass encryption methods used by popular chat programs such as Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal and Confide. This prompted some concern at first online that all such messaging "Apps" were no longer effectively encrypted - but the exploit only applied to people whose phones are already compromised. According to the leaks, the CIA has undocumented exploits on popular smartphone models.

In a series of tweets NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden said deliberately leaving vulnerabilities in software and hardware open left public users susceptible to attacks.

These “anomalies” found in the Muskegon County 2020 election were ignored by our County Clerk, Sheriff and the County of Muskegon. Please read the original article below published May of 2022, written after the cumulation of information came together to create the Muskegon County Election Report.

On the evening of November 3, 2020, most of us here in Muskegon County were closely watching the election results, including our local candidates. At 11:00 PM eastern time, it was clear who the likely winners were, even though the counting had been stopped and not complete. The following morning, however, two local candidates (Republicans) who were in the lead and non-officially declared the winners at 11:00 PM, found themselves to have lost by the next morning due to mail in ballots that mysteriously appeared overnight. Sound familiar? This and learning that Zuckerburg money came into Muskegon County for our election, is what enticed the Muskegon County GOP to look into the situation, thereby establishing the Election Committee to take. Numerous issues were uncovered, creating the possibility that the outcome of several Muskegon County races could have been altered.

To begin, Changes to state law were made due to Proposal 3 in 2018, which allowed voters to vote absentee via mail in ballots up to 40 days prior to an election. Other significant changes were made by the MI Secretary of State which led to widespread mailings of absentee voter (AV) ballot applications and changes to the verification protocol.

With the high volume of absentee voter ballots (AV), it took the Muskegon County Clerk 10 days to finalize the election here in Muskegon County. In one city the increase of AV ballots was five-fold and in another, the mail-in vote was more than half the final vote. Yet the county reported a 65% turnout rate of voters, (compared to 2016 with a 62% voter turnout), however, based on the voting age population (VAP), it was found that the actual turnout was between 71% and 84%.

An analysis was completed on the historical trend of registered voters in Muskegon County and was found to be fairly consistent, until the 2020 election. In 2020, voter registrations pushed the total QVF numbers above the total population of Muskegon County! We know a massive roll out of AV ballot applications were sent out prior to the 2020 election from the MI Secretary of State. But, it was discovered that numerous AV ballot applications were also sent from outside the state to a large number of addresses within Muskegon County. Some of these came from Illinois and California (both blue states), with some receiving five or more AV ballot applications. There is no verifiable voter ID procedure for AV ballots. One municipality in Muskegon County, Dalton Township, had confirmed that 795 AV ballots were sent out, however, 2,760 were returned. This is a difference of 1,875 excess ballots that were returned and counted in the 2020 election. In some municipalities, AV returns were greater than 100% of what was sent out…

House Oversight Chairman James Comer (KY) on Friday responded to US Attorney Merrick Garland’s decision to appoint a special counsel in the Hunter Biden probe.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that US Attorney for Delaware David Weiss was appointed Special Counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation.

Weiss asked for special counsel status in the Hunter Biden case.

“This appointment confirms my commitment to provide Mr. Weiss all the resources he requests,” Garland said. “It also reaffirms that Mr. Weiss has the authority he needs to conduct a thorough investigation and to continue to take the steps he deems appropriate independently based only on the facts and the law.”

This is a massive cover-up operation.

Dave Weiss allowed the statute of limitations to run out on Hunter’s more serious charges as IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley previously pointed out.

“So the DC US Attorney’s office declining those charges – David Weiss’s requested special counsel authority being denied and then the statute of limitations then expires in November and December of 2022 so those years are gone and there’s no way to recoup the money from that Burisma income,” Shapley said in June.

James Comer accused Merrick Garland of stonewalling Congressional oversight with his decision to appoint a special counsel.

“This move by AG Garland is part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of GOP House Oversight’s mounting evidence of President Biden’s role in his family’s schemes selling ‘the brand’ for millions of dollars to foreign nationals.” Chairman Comer said.

Comer continued, “Let’s be clear what today’s move is really about. The Biden Justice Department is trying to stonewall congressional oversight as we have presented evidence to the American people about the Biden family’s corruption. The House Oversight Committee will continue to follow the Biden family’s money trail…”

Robert Palmer sought a lower sentence claiming Trump encouraged him to go to Capitol and he had not yet been charged.

House COVID-19 committee demands records on how school relief funds were spent

The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic demanded the Department of Education turn over records on the disbursement of COVID-19 emergency relief funds to schools in a Thursday letter.

The letter from subcommittee Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) to Education Secretary Miguel Cardona asked for an accounting of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds allocated by the COVID-19 relief packages. The letter noted the extensive learning loss brought by the pandemic, specifically citing recent reports that eighth grade students at LeBron James's I Promise Academy had all failed to meet math proficiency standards.

"Congress allocated more than $190 billion of aid since the beginning of the pandemic to enable schools to safely reopen and address pandemic-related learning loss," Wenstrup wrote before noting that Congress had passed three bills in 2020 and 2021 to address the issue, including allocating $122 billion in the American Rescue Plan, which passed in early 2021.

"However, many critics—including concerned parents—have questioned the efficacy of the program and how much of these funds went toward helping students succeed in the classroom," he continued. "This is especially concerning in light of mounting evidence that America’s students are continuing to fail academically and struggling to recover pandemic-related learning deficits."...

Illinois Supreme Court upholds state’s gun and magazine ban

Temporary restraining orders for thousands of individuals and gun stores secured from different state-level lawsuits are void now that the Illinois Supreme Court court upheld the law.

Illinois’ gun and magazine ban remains in place after being upheld by a split Illinois Supreme Court.

The anticipated ruling in the case brought by state Rep. Dan Caulkins, R-Decatur, was released Friday.

"First, we hold that the exemptions neither deny equal protection nor constitute special legislation because plaintiffs have not sufficiently alleged that they are similarly situated to and treated differently from the exempt classes," the majority opinion said. "Second, plaintiffs expressly waived in the circuit court any independent claim that the restrictions impermissibly infringe the second amendment. Third, plaintiffs’ failure to cross-appeal is a jurisdictional bar to renewing their three-readings claim. Accordingly, we reverse the circuit court and enter judgment for defendants on the equal protection and special legislation claims. We express no opinion on the potential viability of plaintiffs’ waived claim concerning the second amendment."

DeSantis Suggests He Would Use Drone Strikes Against Mexican Drug Cartels

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said on Thursday that he would approve using drone strikes to take down drug cartels in Mexico if he were elected president.

During a campaign event in Iowa, Mr. DeSantis was asked whether “drones” or any other military intervention on Mexican soil were still on the table.

“Yes, I have already said that. We will lean in against the drug cartels. We will absolutely reserve the right, if they’re invading our country and killing our people, we have the right to defend this country,” the Republican governor said.

“We have the right to hold them accountable, and it’s not just if they happen to come over our border. If Mexico is not going to help us with that, well, then we’re going to have to do what we have to do,” he continued.

At the end of Mr. DeSantis’ campaign event, he told NBC News that the United States should “use whatever force we need to defend the country,” adding the Mexican drug cartels equate with a “foreign terrorist organization” responsible for “killing tens of thousands of Americans” annually.

“They’re trafficking people into this country. They’re abusing people, sexual abuse, it’s really the worst of humanity,” he said. “I would categorize them as something akin to a foreign terrorist organization, I think that is what they’ve proven to be. The Mexican government is not doing what they need to do to help with this, but we said from day one on our border announcement that we’d be willing to lean in against them.”

Mr. DeSantis’ latest comments are in line with a proposal GOP senators introduced earlier this year that would slap the Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) label on drug cartels in Mexico.

In February, attorneys general from 21 Republican-led states urged (pdf) President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken to declare Mexican drug cartels as FTOs. Doing so, they argued, would grant state and federal law enforcement increased powers to freeze cartel assets, deny members entry at the border, and allow prosecutors to pursue tougher punishments against the cartels’ supporters.

Mexican Cartels Impact Fentanyl Deaths

Over the last several months, a growing number of GOP legislators have suggested military intervention to dismantle Mexican cartel operatives, which have caused havoc at the border and are responsible for the smuggling of illegal immigrants and deadly narcotics such as fentanyl into the United States.

Fentanyl, a highly addictive and potent synthetic opioid, is the leading cause of death for Americans from ages 18 to 49. An estimated 109,680 people died from drug overdoses in 2022, including about 75,000 from fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

Mexican cartels are known to import fentanyl from China before pressing it into pills or mixing it into other counterfeit pills made to look like Xanax, Adderall, or oxycodone, and selling them to unaware buyers who then accidentally overdose.

In March, Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) was asked during an interview on Fox Business whether he believes the United States should use its military against the cartels in Mexico.

The lawmaker noted that there are some legislative steps that have to be followed, but he agreed that “the idea of U.S. drones striking these fentanyl plants in Mexico sounds like a pretty good idea to me.”

“Americans are dying,” Mr. Hunt, who has a military background, told the news outlet on March 17. “It’s the federal government’s responsibility to keep our citizens safe, and we are failing them. If it takes military action and if we do it the right way, legislatively, then sign me up. I’m ready for that.”

Mr. Hunt’s remark came a week after the U.S. State Department reiterated that it has a “Level 4” travel advisory in effect for portions of Mexico, including in Tamaulipas state—where four Americans were kidnapped.

Besides the United States—Canada, France, and the United Kingdom also have travel warnings in place for Mexico. Level 4 is the highest warning in the U.S. agency’s travel advisory system.

U.S. Attorney David Weiss’ appointment Friday as special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation appears to violate a Department of Justice (DOJ) regulation requiring a special counsel to “be selected from outside the United States Government.”

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Weiss’ appointment as special counsel Friday, noting he would “continue to have the authority and the responsibility that he has previously exercised” and explaining Weiss had requested to be appointed on Tuesday. The Justice Department regulation, which governs the powers and qualifications of a special counsel, was also used to criticize the 2020 appointment of John Durham as special counsel to investigate the origins of the Trump-Russia probe while he was serving as U.S. attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew McCarthy called the appointment of Weiss a “sham” on Fox News, saying “the point of having a special counsel is to bring in someone from outside the government who we can trust to do a credible investigation.

“What makes a special counsel special is that you’re a lawyer who’s brought in from outside the United States government, not just outside the Justice Department, outside the government,” he said.

“This is the Biden Justice Department’s vehicle for maintaining control of an investigation that they are not pursuing,” he continued. “They’ve had the case for five years. They’ve never indicted it. They’re strategically allowing the statute of limitations to run to the point that the 2014 and 2015 conduct, which covers most of the $21 million that the congressional investigation report showed this week, that’s already time barred.”

Fox News legal analyst and former defense attorney Gregg Jarrett tweeted that Garland is “defying federal regulations.”

“So, the fix is in,” he said. “Weiss will continue the obstruction & Biden protection.”

Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton also said Weiss is “ineligible even under DOJ’s constitutionally deficient special counsel” regulations.

Georgetown law professor and former acting Solicitor General Neal K. Katyal, who helped draft the special counsel rules as a Justice Department staff member in 1999, previously argued in The New York Times that Durham’s appointment as special counsel violated the rules.

Durham resigned from his position as U.S. attorney when he was appointed special counsel. Garland said Friday that Weiss would continue to serve as U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware.

Lawyer and former federal prosecutor Bill Shipley tweeted that the attorney general is “not subject to being disciplined for ignoring a regulation.”

“These are created by the Agencies themselves, not the Congress,” Shipley said. “And the regulations provide there is no right created in anyone to force compliance — in a court or otherwise — with this regulation in the event it is violated.”
