The transfers come after a surge of illegal immigrants from Mexico has been crossing into the United States from Canada.

According to the statement, Freeland has also convened meetings with the heads of national and regional Canadian financial institutions, which were attended by Routledge and Bank of Canada representatives.

Vaupshas says "significant structural and regulatory safeguards" are in place and that Canadian financial institutions "are stable and resilient."

Routledge has emphasized the limited nature of the crisis in Canada and that Silicon Valley Bank doesn't hold commercial or individual deposits in Canada.

The process would require the filing of a $500 application by organizers of a petition. To successfully recall a politician, 40% of the voter population of a specific ward would be required.

Canada's financial regulator said on Wednesday it had taken permanent control of the assets of Silicon Valley Bank's Canadian branch and was winding up the institution.

The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI) said in a statement that it was restructuring the branch in the wake of a decision by the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to transfer all deposits of Silicon Valley Bank to a newly created bridge bank.

"I took this action to effect an orderly transition of the Canadian branch of Silicon Valley Bank to the FDIC bridge bank," said Peter Routledge, superintendent of financial institutions.

"I am satisfied that this approach, developed with officials in the United States, is in the best interest of the branch’s creditors," he continued.

OSFI said an orderly, court-supervised process would allow operations of the Silicon Valley Bank unit to continue. The Canadian business is focused primarily lending to corporate clients and does not hold any commercial or individual deposits.

OSFI said on Sunday said it was taking temporary control of Silicon Valley Bank's Canadian unit.

A Canadian business advocacy group is asking parliament to trash a Bill C-18 motion that would expose communications between private Canadians and tech giants.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce, which represents more than 200,000 businesses, wrote a protest letter to the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage. The letter said an upcoming motion – seeking to compel Meta and Google to release private communications with Canadians – is undemocratic.

Statistics Canada on Wednesday released data showing that Canada’s population rose by more than 1,000,000 between January 1st, 2022 and January 1st, 2023.

Ottawa also ditched its projection to balance the budget within five years with the next fiscal year, predicting a $40.1 billion deficit. That deficit is expected to drop to $14 billion by 2028.

Alberta litigator Leighton Grey of Grey Wowk Spencer LLP sent a letter to Elections Alberta on Monday, saying he represents many residents concerned with ensuring the integrity of the province’s 29th election.

Grey says he’s become aware that Elections Alberta intends to enable machine tabulator counting in the upcoming provincial election. The letter argues that the Alberta Election Act clearly intends for “witnessed hand counting of ballots.”

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) recently released its latest statistics confirming 87,485 induced abortions in Canada in 2021.

The most recent data, which was released last week, includes the number of induced abortions performed both in a hospital setting and in clinics. Surgical abortions accounted for nearly two-thirds (63%) of abortions while medical abortions using oral treatments such as Mifegymiso made up 37% of abortions in Canada.

The age of women who sought an abortion was similar across all age groups, with most procedures done on women between the ages of 18-24 (20,825). Women who were older than 35 were the second most common group seeking abortions (20,208).

Nearly 35,000 abortions were performed in Ontario alone (34,988), according to the CIHI.

Along with the three fired for being foreign agents, dozens of other federal employees were stripped of security clearances.

- 71 at the Canada Revenue Agency;

- 64 at the Department of Employment;

- four at Shared Services Canada, the federal IT agency;

- three at the Public Health Agency of Canada

- two at the Department of Immigration

MP for Don Valley North recently resigned from the Liberal caucus after a CSIS leak accused him of being the beneficiary of Chinese Communist Party influence to help him win his nomination in 2019.
