"The spike antigen itself … may contribute to myocarditis" in some adolescents and young adults, says study in American Heart Association journal.

Fact-checkers and Big Tech lost another round with purported COVID-19 misinformation this week, when an American Heart Association journal published research suggesting the spike protein used in mRNA vaccines can harm some people.

The peer-reviewed study in Circulation reviewed 16 adolescents and young adults hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital or Boston Children's with post-vaccination myocarditis from January 2021-February 2022. All had "markedly elevated levels of full-length spike protein" in their blood, "unbounded by antibodies."

The Harvard Medical School researchers affiliated with the hospitals did not find free-floating spike in 45 "healthy, asymptomatic, age-matched vaccinated control subjects," despite "essentially indistinguishable" antibody profiling and T-cell responses between the two groups.

Woman [Ashli Babbitt's Mom] Charged with Blocking and Obstructing Roadways, Obey an Order

This afternoon a group of demonstrators were illegally blocking traffic on Independence Avenue, SW, near First Street, SW.

The group did not have a permit to demonstrate on Capitol Grounds. Officers established a clear police line to prevent the group from moving further west on Independence Avenue, SW. The officers and officials told the group to get out of the road or the group would be arrested. The sidewalk was open. A woman in the group was given multiple warnings to get out of the road. Instead of getting out of the road, the woman refused to leave, turned around with her hands behind her back, and asked to be arrested.

Around 1:45 p.m., the woman was arrested for two Capitol Traffic Regulations – §16.3.20 Obey An Order, as well as §16.3.40 Blocking And Obstructing Roadways. The person was identified as 58 year oldMicki Witthoeft.

As is typical for this charge, Ms. Witthoeft was processed and released this afternoon after being given a citation to appear in court at a later date.

SBF Seeks Access To $450 Million In Seized Robinhood Shares To Pay His Legal Fees

Sam Bankman-Fried is fighting to persuade a US court that he should be able to access Robinhood shares worth around $450 million to help pay for his legal fees. The problem: the Department of Justice - which does not believe the 56 million shares of Robinhood were property of the bankrupt FTX estate - moved on Wednesday to seize the shares. Another problem: both FTX and BlockFi are also laying claim to the shares as well. And while FTX’s creditors hope the shares can help make them whole, Bankman-Fried said he needs the funds to cover his legal fees. 

Lawyers for the disgraced former CEO in a Delaware court filing on Thursday that the 56.3 million Robinhood shares should be returned to Bankman-Fried because the company that owns them, Emergent Fidelity Technology Ltd, is not part of the bankruptcy estate (at least not yet). Bankman-Fried owns 90% of Emergent. He and former FTX chief technology officer Gary Wang borrowed $546 million from Alameda Research (in other words used money stolen from FTX clients) to buy the Robinhood shares, according to court filings. Robinhood’s shares closed at $8.11 on Thursday, giving the stake a value of $456 million.

“Mr. Bankman-Fried has not been found criminally or civilly liable for fraud, and it is improper for the FTX Debtors to ask the Court to simply assume that everything Mr. Bankman-Fried ever touched is presumptively fraudulent,” his lawyers said in the filing. They added that Bankman-Fried’s need to pay his legal bills is greater than the “economic loss” that FTX faces, citing several legal precedents; we are confident that FTX clients would certainly beg to differ.

"Mr. Bankman-Fried requires some of these funds to pay for his criminal defense," the filing read, noting that the disgraced FTX founder is “facing potential criminal liability.” Bankman-Fried pleaded not guilty to all charges, including wire fraud and campaign finance violations, in New York Tuesday.

Bankman-Fried’s move is the latest in an ongoing ownership dispute over the shares. The equities, once worth more than $600 million, have plunged since they’ve been stuck in legal limbo.

On Thursday, court revealed that more than 56 million Robinhood shares are on the line, worth a little more than $450 million as of Friday’s prices. The shares belong to Emergent Fidelity Technologies, of which Bankman-Fried is the 90% stockholder, the filing added.

Representing Bankman-Fried in the bankruptcy proceedings is Gregory T. Donilon from Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads LLP.

Bankman-Fried’s criminal lawyers are Cohen & Gresser’s Christian R. Everdell and Mark Stewart Cohen, who recently represented Ghislaine Maxwell in her sex trafficking case.

Bankman-Fried’s personal legal fees are not public, but Sullivan and Cromwell LLC, the firm leading FTX’s restructuring, accepted a $12 million retainer from the exchange before it filed for Chapter 11 on Nov. 11, 2022. As of Nov. 3, 2022, the firm had already cashed in more than $3.4 million of its retainer, nearly 30%.

Five Democratic politicians' homes or offices have been shot at in Albuquerque

Local and state police are working with the FBI in Albuquerque, N.M., to investigate five shootings that have targeted Democratic politicians' homes or offices since in the past month.

Bernalillo County Commissioner Adriann Barboa, whose home was the first to come under fire, told NPR on Friday that the attacks have been difficult to process, "especially knowing that other women of color elected officials have also been targeted."

In the attacks, multiple rounds have been fired into the doors and walls of buildings — in some cases while elected officials were inside with their families — but no one has been hurt.

"We're grateful that nobody has been injured, but we also realize that we have to move quickly," Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina said at a news conference about the attacks.

His point was underlined by recent events: Authorities had planned to highlight the shootings on Thursday, after a state senator's home was fired at on Tuesday — and then came word of yet more gunfire with a political target, as bullets struck a second state senator's office Thursday morning.

"We do have some leads," Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller said. He acknowledged the obvious connection of all the victims belonging to the same party, but warned people not to speculate about the violence while evidence still is being gathered.

"We're worried and concerned that these are connected and possibly politically motivated or personally motivated," Keller said. "But we don't know that for a fact."

Sunday, Dec. 4 — At 4:41 p.m. someone fired eight shots at Bernalillo County Commissioner Adriann Barboa's home in southeast Albuquerque. "In early December, I returned from Christmas shopping to my home being shot up; it was terrifying," Barboa told NPR on Friday. "My house had four shots through the front door and windows, where just hours before my grandbaby and I were playing in the living room."

Saturday, Dec. 10 — The campaign office in downtown Albuquerque for Raúl Torrez, the state's new attorney general, was shot at in the early morning "after we had already moved out," a campaign representative told NPR, adding that the campaign is working with law enforcement. Police officers collected evidence at the time, and that evidence now is being analyzed for any possible ties to the other shootings in Albuquerque.

Sunday, Dec. 11 — A barrage of gunfire hit the home of then-Bernalillo County Commissioner Debbie O'Malley in the North Valley area. "More than a dozen gunshot impacts were identified on walls and the house," Albuquerque police spokesman Gilbert Gallegos told NPR.

Tuesday, Jan. 3 — The home of state Sen. Linda Lopez was targeted in southwest Albuquerque. "At least eight shots were fired at her home after midnight," Gallegos said. Showing reporters from the Albuquerque Journal multiple bullet holes in her garage, Lopez said it was the first time she experienced "a very personal attack on me and my family."

Thursday, Jan. 5 — Police gunshot-detection sensors registered three shots fired near the downtown law office where state Sen. Antonio "Moe" Maestas works, at 11:41 a.m. Police didn't find any sign of damage. Maestas thanked police via Twitter, saying his family was safe and sound.

Authorities in the state of Louisiana are appearing to take a page out of the CCP’s playbook.

Randall Reid (see pic), 28, was wrongfully arrested after Louisiana authorities used facial recognition technology to pin a purse theft on Reid.

Reid was arrested in Dekalb County, Georgia after Louisiana authorities issued a fugitive warrant for Reid.

Attorney Tommy Calogero who is representing Reid, stated his client was arrested on November 25th for purse thefts in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana and was released on December 1st after facial recognition errors were found.

“They told me I had a warrant out of Jefferson Parish. I said, ‘What is Jefferson Parish?’” Reid said. “I have never been to Louisiana a day in my life. Then they told me it was for theft. So not only have I not been to Louisiana, I also don’t steal.”

The United States is well behind China when it comes to facial recognition technology being used in the public square and many Americans want it to stay that way.

A database leak in 2019 revealed almost every citizen is tracked in China’s facial recognition system.

Children are also being tracked in schools.

Adav Noti, an election-law expert at the Campaign Legal Center, describes the flow of dark money that went to shore up McCarthy’s right flank as a “nesting¬-doll situation,” one that requires peeling back layer after layer to get closer to the source of the funds. The centerpiece of this scheme is a nonprofit group with the nothing-to-see-here name of CLA Inc.

In 2018, CLA gave $1.5 million — its largest grant of the year — to State Tea Party Express, which in turn spent almost that entire amount, $1.46 million, on political activity. The readily available evidence suggests that State Tea Party Express did not spend any money on ads or political work other than helping elect McCarthy the next GOP leader.

So what do we know about CLA Inc.? For starters, the group made it extremely hard to know anything about its operations in 2018. CREW president Noah Bookbinder said his group had to file a complaint with the IRS to force CLA to produce its 2018 tax return.

The principal officer listed onCLA Inc.’s tax documents is Marc Himmelstein. He’s the opposite of a tea-party activist: A former executive at the American Petroleum Institute, the Big Oil lobbying group, Himmelstein now works as a lobbyist at National Environmental Strategies, a D.C. lobbying firm he co-founded with Haley Barbour, the former Mississippi governor, prolific fundraiser, and good ol’ boy head of the Republican National Committee.

Don’t be fooled by the firm’s feel-good name: Himmelstein and his colleaguesrepresent multibillion-dollar energy companies including Dominion Energy and ¬Exelon, as well as large utilities like PG&E and DTE Energy. By all indications, Himmelstein’s decades-long career in the influence industry has proven lucrative: Lobbying records show payments to his firm totaling millions of dollars every year, and public records indicate he and his partner reportedly bought a ¬nearly $2.7 million home in 2017 once owned by the political talk-show host John McLaughlin. A previous home boasted a 6,000-bottle wine cellar, according to public-¬property listings. (Himmelstein did not respond to requests for comment and a detailed set of questions.)

The connection between National Environmental Strategies and CLA isn’t hard to find: They share the same address, according to tax records. Not only that, but the office listed for both outfits happens to be located at the Watergate complex, the site of the infamous 1972 break-in by Richard Nixon’s henchmen that unraveled a criminal conspiracy and led to Nixon’s downfall. Just the name Watergate conjures images of political skulduggery and Beltway elites.

Himmelstein’s services extend beyond inside-¬the-Beltway lobbying. One of his clients is First¬Energy, a scandal-plagued utility headquartered in Ohio. According to the Center for Public Integrity, CLA, Himmelstein’s dark-money group, spent thousands of dollars on ads in an Ohio congressional race attacking a state legislator who had refused to support a bailout of two of FirstEnergy’s nuclear power plants. “I didn’t budge when they came into my office to lobby me,” the candidate, state Rep. ¬Christina Hagan, told CPI about her meetings with First¬Energy ¬officials. “I became the target of the company and the members of our leadership team who wanted to get it done but couldn’t because I wasn’t going to be supportive.” In the end, Hagan lost. (In June, ¬federal prosecutors charged FirstEnergy with conspiracy to commit wire fraud related to the power-plant ¬bailout scheme. FirstEnergy agreed to pay $230 ¬million as part of a deferred-prosecution agreement in the case.)

As for State Tea Party Express, the other key link in this dark-money daisy chain, peel away the veneer of grassroots authenticity and you find a California political consultant named Sal Russo. A veteran of GOP politics, Russo has faced criticism in the past for operating tea-party-themed groups that raised millions from small-dollar donors and allegedly funneled a large percentage of that money back to Russo’s consulting firm. In 2009 and 2010, rival tea-party groups ripped Russo-backed organizations as phony front groups, calling them the “Astroturf Express” and a “Republican front organization.” More recently, Russo was sued by the California attorney general for allegedly defrauding donors who had ¬contributed to a charity that sent care packages to U.S. service members overseas. (Russo told the Los Angeles Times the lawsuit was politically motivated and the allegations were “bogus.”)…

Republican opponents of Rep. Kevin McCarthy flipped to support him on the twelfth and thirteenth speaker ballots, giving the Californian renewed hope of ascending to the gavel.

Conservatives led by Texas Rep. Chip Roy negotiated a rules package that would devolve power away from the Speaker and back to committees and individual members. Although the details have not been made public, reports indicate that the deal between McCarthy and his detractors includes plum committee assignments, baseline spending promises, and a one vote threshold for the motion to vacate the chair. Maryland Rep. Andy Harris flipped to support McCarthy on the 13th ballot.

Scott Perry, and incoming House Financial Services Committee chairman Patrick McHenry of North Carolina negotiated the rules package on Thursday night and into Friday morning.Provisions include the motion to vacate threshold at one vote, a vote on a term limits constitutional amendment, and a plan to balance the federal budget over a ten-year period.

“It involves some leaps of good faith to see to it that it is implemented,” Bishop acknowledged.

It’s “about how to make this place work for the American people, and so that’s what you’ve seen happen here today. That’s what we’re continuing to work toward. I think we’ll be able to get there,” incoming Oklahoma Rep. Josh Brecheen added.

Republican Maryland Rep. Andy Harris flipped his vote to support McCarthy on the 13th ballot. He is angling to chair the Health and Human Services subcommittee on Appropriations.

Even if McCarthy gains the speaker’s gavel, the House will still need 218 votes to pass the rules package instituting the agreement. If the package does not pass, the McCarthy skeptics could defect.

“If the framework blows up, I’m out,” Perry said.

Buck and Hunt are expected to return to D.C. just ahead of the vote.

Traders Slash Fed Bets After Data; Key Yield Inversion Deepens

US short-term yields slumped Friday as slower-than-anticipated wage growth and an unexpectedly weak services-sector indicator prompted traders to trim expectations for just how high the Federal Reserve might push its overnight benchmark.

The moves reversed the previous day’s bond-market selloff and came even as job growth and the unemployment rate for December were better than expected.

Most segments of the Treasury yield curve steepened as two- and three-year yields each plummeted around 20 basis points and were near their session lows late in New York. Still, three-month bill yields exceeded the 10-year by a full percentage point for the first time in decades as another Fed rate increase is expected in February. That gap is seen by many as a reliable signal that a recession could be in store.

Swap contracts referencing Fed meeting dates showed investors now expect the policy rate to peak at under 5% this cycle, down from 5.06% just before the latest employment data. While traders remain split about the size of the February move, the 33 basis points priced in suggests 25 basis points is now considered more likely than 50. Longer-dated contracts still anticipate rate cuts by year-end. The dollar fell and was down 1.1% late on Friday, while the S&P 500 index closed 2.3% higher. The US jobs data capped a week of solid labor market metrics that sparked a run up in Treasury yields. A survey of private hiring and the JOLTS job openings suggested underlying demand for workers that in the current environment of hot service sector inflation could keep the Fed on course for further rate hikes.

On the other hand, the Institute for Supply Management’s services gauge unexpectedly shrank at the end of 2022, with steep declines in measures of business activity and orders that, if sustained, risk heightening concerns about the demand outlook. The release of that data after the jobs report turbocharged earlier front-end moves and pushed the curve inversion back into deeper territory.

WASHINGTON — President Biden on Friday blamed the “sick insurrectionists” behind Jan. 6 for the murder of Capitol Police officer Billy Evans —despite a Nation of Islam fanatic actually committing the crime three months after the pro-Donald Trump mob stormed the Capitol.

“Today is a ceremony to honor heroes of Jan. 6,” Biden said at an awards ceremony in the White House East Room on the second anniversary of the riot. “We also recognize the late US Capitol Police Officer Billy Evans. His family is with us today.”

“While they were still cordoning off the Capital because threats by these sick insurrectionists continued to be propagated on the Internet — again, all America saw what happened when Officer Evans was killed defending a checkpoint you had to go through to get up to the Capitol because of these godawful sick threats that continue to move forward,” Biden said. “And the whole world saw it. It’s just hard to believe, it’s hard to believe it could happen here in America.”

Biden did not mention the political ideology of Evans’ actual killer. Noah Green, 25, described himself as a follower of the anti-white extremist organization and was killed by police shortly after running over Evans on April 2, 2021.

Four people died at the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot. Trump supporter Ashli Babbitt, 36, was fatally shot by a police officer as she climbed through the busted-out window of the House Speaker’s Lobby and three other pro-Trump rioters died of medical emergencies in the chaos. At least three accused rioters later died by suicide.

Shortly before Biden spoke, Babbitt’s mother Micki Witthoeft was arrested while protesting the death of her daughter near the Capitol.

US Capitol Police said in a statement that Witthoeft, 58, was told to stop blocking traffic on Independence Avenue and refused — instead asking to be arrested. She was charged with violating two Capitol traffic regulations by refusing to obey an order and blocking and obstructing roadways. According to authorities, Witthoeft was issued a citation and released after being told to appear in court at a later date.

The president honored 14 people with the Presidential Citizens Medal in recognition of their roles in either certifying the results of the 2020 presidential election or in fighting off the mob on that day.

FORT KNOX, Ky. — His 2,867 flight hours, much of it in combat, and Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals weren’t enough to avoid a fatal crash near a Franklin, Kentucky farm.

Exactly 75 years later, Capt. Thomas Mantell’s flight that afternoon still remains shrouded in mystery. He died while pursuing a UFO that was seen in the skies over Godman Army Airfield by countless people throughout the region surrounding Fort Knox.

On Jan. 7, 1948, Mantell sat in the cockpit of his F-51D Mustang as flight leader headed north from Marietta Air Force Base in Georgia back to Louisville’s Standiford Field. He and three other pilots from the Kentucky Air National Guard’s Flight C, 165th Fighter Squadron had been participating in a low-altitude navigational training exercise when the request came from Godman Commander Col. Guy Hix to investigate the sightings.

The 25-year-old World War II hero acknowledged the request, and he and two other pilots climbed to 15,000 feet to intercept it. The fourth, a “Lt. Hendricks”, continued on to Standiford Field.

According to a Jan. 6, 2005 article by Turret editor Larry Barnes, several hundred people in Central Kentucky had already witnessed the UFO by 1:15 p.m. on that Wednesday, a day described by some observers as partly cloudy with high-altitude feathery cirrus clouds. That day is recorded by Wunderground.com as also having relatively calm winds, mild temperatures — a high of 49 degrees — zero precipitation, and visibility for at least 10 miles.

“It would have been probably a typical winter day. If they had cirrus clouds in the sky, the visibility would have been great,” said an area weather forecaster. “There was just nothing much else going on weatherwise, so it probably made for a pretty good day.”

News agencies wasted no time turning the crash into front-page news. The big questions on everyone’s minds: What did Mantell encounter, and why did he crash?

The Debrief.org website reveals the mad scramble for answers in its Feb. 15, 2022 story by Jazz Shaw titled “What was Pilot Thomas Mantell Chasing When His Plane Crashed in 1948?” Reporting on source materials from Project BLUEBOOK, Shaw notes that Air Materiel Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio requested meteorological records shortly afterward of the region from that particular day.

“They also asked astronomers to identify the positions of both Venus and Jupiter in the sky on an hourly basis,” writes Shaw. “They definitely seemed to be looking for any mundane explanation, but even their own investigation found that those planets would not be visible during daylight hours and the weather was good for visibility.”

Later theories that Mantell had merely seen Venus in the sky when he described what he witnessed were debunked as a result. But he wasn’t the only one to see the phenomenon.

Calls came into Kentucky state police offices from concerned Kentuckians at several different locations throughout the morning and early afternoon; so many, in fact, that officers decided to alert the Fort Knox military police, who in turn notified personnel at Godman as the object slowly traveled south from Irvington to Owensboro before reaching Godman.

Some at Godman had already observed the object by 1:45 p.m. as it traveled over Fort Knox.

Two tower personnel, Tech Sgt. Quinton Blackwell and Pfc. Stanley Oliver, later described the mysterious object as something resembling an ice cream-filled cone or parachute — white and round on top with a conical shape underneath. Operations officer Capt. Gary Carter said the round white object was plainly visible in the afternoon sky.

When the House Jan. 6 committee released hundreds of documents from its investigation online at the end of the year, it inadvertently made public nearly 2,000 Social Security numbers belonging to high profile individuals who visited the White House in December 2020, according to a report. The Washington Post reported Friday that the leaked Social Security information was included in a spreadsheet buried within the "massive cache" of records from the committee's work. Social Security numbers belonging to at least three members of Trump's cabinet, a few Republican governors, and several Trump associates were reportedly compromised. The data was part of the White House visitor logs published by the committee.

Last month, Dr. Robert Honeyman lost their sister to Covid. They wrote about it on Twitter and received dozens of condolences, over 4,000 retweets and 43,000 likes.

Exactly one month later, on Dec. 12, Honeyman wrote that another tragedy had befallen their family.

“Sad to announce that my husband has entered a coma after being in hospital with Covid. The doctor is unsure if he will come out,” they tweeted. “This year has been the toughest of my life losing my sister to this virus. This is the first time in my life I don’t see light at the end of the tunnel.”

Again, the condolences and well-wishes rolled in. But there was a problem: Honeyman wasn’t real. 

The transgender “Doctor of Sociology and Feminist studies” with a “keen interest in poetry” who used they/them pronouns was, in fact, a stock photo described on DepositPhotos, a royalty-free image site, as “Smiling happy, handsome latino man outside—headshot portrait.”

Their supposedly comatose husband, Dr. Patrick C. Honeyman, was also fake. His Twitter photo had been stolen from an insurance professional in Wayne, Indiana.

The two fake doctors, whose accounts urged extreme caution about Covid-19, were part of a network of at least four fake accounts that touted their ties to the LGBTQ+ community, vocally advocated for mask-wearing and social distancing, and dished out criticism to those they felt were not taking the pandemic seriously.

The Honeymans could not be reached for comment, as they do not exist. At publication time, Robert Honeyman’s account was no longer active. 

The fake doctors were uncovered by Joshua Gutterman Tranen, a self-described “gay writer” pursuing a master’s of fine arts at Bennington College. He saw Robert Honeyman’s tweet about their husband being in a coma, noticed people he followed also followed them, and thought that they might be part of the LGBTQ+ academic community.

But after 10 minutes of googling, Gutterman Tranen concluded that Robert Honeyman’s photo was a stock image and their biography stretched boundaries of believability: an academic who left no traces on academic websites and had lost two family members to Covid in late 2022, despite masking and distancing.

The character looked like “liberal Mad Libs,” Gutterman Tranen said. 

“I’m a self-identified leftist, and I understand that people have a lot of different identities, but it felt concocted in the lab about how many identities and horrible experiences can we put on one person,” he said.

House Republicans turned on one of their own Friday, with onelawmaker-electangrily challenging Matt Gaetz of Florida as he nominated Jim Jordan for speaker in order to block party leader Kevin McCarthy from taking the gavel.

As the House attempted for a 12th time to elect a speaker before moving on to other business, Gaetz — one of six Republicans dubbed the “Never Kevins” — rose to nominate Jordan of Ohio, who has staunchly backed McCarthy (R-Calif.) and expressed no interest in the post.

“You only earned the position of speaker of the House if you can get the votes,” Gaetz said. “Mr. McCarthy doesn’t have the votes today. He will not have the votes tomorrow and he will not have the votes next week, next month, next year.”

As Gaetz spoke, some Republicans began to ostentatiously walk out of the chamber, while others began to audibly take issue with his remarks.

“And so one must wonder, Madam Clerk, is this an exercise in vanity for someone who has done the math, taken the counts and is putting this institution through something that absolutely is avoidable?” Gaetz pressed on.

“We’ll come back tonight, and I believe at that time, we’ll have the votes to finish this once and for all,” McCarthy told reporters after the House adjourned until 10 p.m.

On his 13th try, McCarthy received 214 votes, the most support he had gotten on any ballot so far. He is expected to need 218 votes to become speaker when all is said and done.

On Friday former Rep. Madison Cawthorn joined Steve Bannon on The War Room to discuss Kevin McCarthy and the pressure put on the 20 holdouts.

Madison Cawthorn knows this from firsthand experience.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy helped sabotage Rep. Madison Cawthorn’s re-election campaign as part of an effort to purge the loudest pro-Trump lawmakers.

McCarthy allies attempted to hide their effort to sabotage MAGA Republicans, according to a report from the Washington Post.

“GOP lobbyist Jeff Miller, one of McCarthy’s closest friends and biggest fundraisers, and Brian O. Walsh, a Republican strategist who works for multiple McCarthy-backed groups, were both involved in an independent effort to oppose Cawthorn as part of a broader project to create a more functioning GOP caucus next year,” the Washington Post reported. “The allies close to McCarthy have sometimes taken steps to conceal their efforts, as they did in the Cawthorn case, with money passing from top GOP donors through organizations that do not disclose their donors or have limited public records, federal disclosures show.”

The aim of the secret operation, according to the report, was to weed out Republicans “who could either cause McCarthy trouble if he becomes House speaker or jeopardize GOP victories in districts where a more moderate candidate might have a better chance at winning.”

A GOP operative, speaking to the paper on the condition of anonymity, said that “McCarthy is a political animal, and he has a lot of political animals working for him. … He is not a guy to be trifled with. It’s like they say in the Marine Corps, ‘No better friend, no worse enemy.’ And they mean it, and they act on it.”

In May, Cawthorn lost his primary after a massive effort, apparently from both parties, to smear him and surround him in scandal.

Following his defeat, Cawthorn’s spokesman Micah Bock appeared on Newsmax and blamed the loss on the dark money flooding into the state to take him out.

“I think there is about 2 million reasons on why he lost the election last night. And those reasons are every single dollar of dark money that flooded into his district from donors from outside of NC-11,” Bock said. “Specifically $300,000 the flooded into the district through a North Carolina federal senator.”

“So if you want to talk about the reasons why young conservative politicians may not stick with the norm of the establishment viewpoints, why they may get the stick more often than not, you have to look at where the establishment is sending their money,” Bock continued. “And unfortunately in this case they sent that money to silence a young conservative voice.”

Madison Cawthorn: I really want to push back on this idea that the Republican agenda is really going to stall out. The Republican agenda is not going to take hold if we don’t have a conservative Speaker… What is going on now with these 20 right now is they are facing extreme pressure. Keep them in your prayers. Because make no mistake, there are incredible threats being levied at them. Ones that might be removed from committees. Others that they might be ruining their personal lives. They might be going after family members and their workplace. This is a very serious task that they are undertaking and it should not be taken lightly… I’m telling you, we know that Kevin McCarthy worked in secret to oust a lot of Republicans and conservatives from Congress who were running in the 2022 cycle which is why we have such a narrow majority. And so if he’s willing to do that politically, imagine what he’s willing to do with policy.

AUSTIN, Texas (KXAN) — This month, skygazers will be treated to a once-in-a-civilization sight: a green comet named C/2022 E3 (ZTF) approaching Earth.

The comet, which last passed through our solar system a little more than 50,000 years ago, will reach its perihelion (or its closest point to the sun) on Jan. 12, when it will be within 100 million miles of the sun, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

On Feb. 2, the comet will only be about 26 million miles from Earth. This is the closest it has passed since the Upper Paleolithic era, an epoch of human history when Homo sapiens are believed to have left Africa and settled in Asia and Europe.

To put it into perspective, Neanderthals still walked the Earth the last time the comet passed over.

The comet exhibited a green coma and a yellowish dust tail and a faint ion tail. The comet will reach its perihelion on January 12, 2023, at a distance of 1.11 AU (166 million km) and the closest approach to Earth will be on February 1, 2023, at a distance of 0.28 AU (42 million km). The comet is expected to get brighter than magnitude 6 and thus become visible with the naked eye from a dark sky site, appearing as a smudge in the sky. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement revealed recently that it saw tens of thousands of illegal immigrants for medical services in 2022, with the agency reporting a nine-figure budget to address the health needs of noncitizens.

The bureau said in its annual fiscal report last week that over the course of the fiscal year it "provided direct care – including medical and dental health services – to over 118,000 noncitizens housed at 19 [ICE Health Service Corps]-operated facilities throughout the United States."

The total number of medical visits "exceeded 1.1 million" over the fiscal year, the agency said, with IHSC also overseeing "compliance with healthcare-related detention standards for more than 120,500 noncitizens housed in 163 non-IHSC-staffed facilities."

Overall, the health wing's operating budget "approached $324 million" over that time, ICE said.

ICE reported in late 2022 that a record2.4 million illegal immigrants crossed the border over the last fiscal year.
