The Trump-Fox News rift widened on Monday when former President Donald Trump went off on the hosts of Fox & Friends.

The morning show, once Trump’s favorite cable-news program hosted by three of his most loyal sycophants, is now apparently out for blood against the former president—at least according to Trump himself.

“@foxandfriends just really botched my poll numbers, no doubt on purpose. That show has been terrible—gone to the ‘dark side,’” Trump posted Monday to Truth Social, complaining the show pointed out too many “outliers” from right-wing youth org Turning Point USA’s straw poll among its Tampa confab this past weekend, which showed the ex-president holding about 79-percent support.

The Fox & Friends segment in question did note Trump’s overwhelming popularity among the conference-goers, but host Steve Doocy heavily caveated the results. “You have got people from all across the country convening in Tampa. I’m thinking about that is a little different than a couple other polls that we have seen over the last couple of weeks,” Doocy said, pointing to Blueprint, University of New Hampshire, and New York Times polls showing Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis with an edge against the MAGA kingpin.

Former Nudgee College principal Stephen McLaughlin attended school celebration despite allegations of child sexual abuse

A Christian Brother who was suspected by police of being a paedophile was able to attend a birthday party at exclusive Brisbane private school St Joseph's Nudgee College, despite his order being in negotiations to pay a settlement to one of his alleged victims.

Former college headmaster Stephen David McLaughlin, who had been the subject of unproven child abuse allegations in the 1990s and early 2000s, was photographed at the celebration for a former staff member at the school on May 31, 2017.

Some students from the college were present at an official welcome prior to the function that was then attended by McLaughlin, who had been boarding master at the school in the early 1980s before becoming College headmaster in 1988 and then leader of the Brother's Xavier province in 1996.

Nicknamed Stumpy by students, McLaughlin was investigated in the late 1990s and 2000s and in one case committed for trial on indecent dealing charges, but was never convicted in relation to allegations made by four alleged child abuse victims.

Some of the allegations revolved around the then Brother taking young children, often from single-parent families, to stay with him alone in Brisbane motels.

Investigating police found payment records showing McLaughlin paid for the motel stays using his credit card.

Two of the complainants had siblings who had attended Nudgee College.

At the time, McLaughlin denied all allegations and his legal team argued the complainants were unreliable and their statements contradictory.

But in early 2017, Brisbane solicitor Peter Deed, acting on behalf of one complainant from the late 1990s, approached the Christian Brothers seeking compensation for his client.

The complainant alleged that when he was a 15-year-old schoolboy in Brisbane he had been introduced to McLaughlin by self-confessed child molester and Nudgee old boy Dennis Norman Douglas in 1997, according to legal documents sighted by the ABC.

Deadly gunfire rips through park in Los Angeles

A mass shooting left two people dead and at least five wounded in Los Angeles’ San Pedro neighborhood, while an informal car show attended by hundreds of people was taking place on Sunday afternoon.

Dozens of armed police officers responded to reports of gunfire at Peck Park around 3:50pm. According to the LA Police Department, it was not considered an ‘active shooter’ situation, but police had no suspects in custody as of 9pm on Sunday evening.

“We don’t know how many shooters we have at this point,” LAPD’s Capt. Kelly Muniz said, adding that investigators believe the shooting was sparked by a “dispute” between two parties. Several weapons were found at the scene.

Videos from the area show a massive police presence, as well as firefighters and paramedics carrying people away on stretchers. Some particularly disturbing clips circulating online showed a bloodied individual lying on the ground, motionless.

A total of seven people were rushed to a local hospital with gunshot wounds, four men and three women. Two of the victims succumbed to their injuries and is in a critical condition.

Authorities said there were about 500 people at the park when the shooting happened, many of whom were attending a car show. However, police could not immediately confirm whether the incident was related to the event. A fire department spokesman said it was not an officially organized event, but rather an improvised gathering of car owners to show off their rides.

Verizon announced on Monday that they would no longer include One America News Network in their FIOS cable provider channel lineup.

Verizon said the negotiations with OANN was typical and usual and that OAN did not agree to “fair terms.”

OAN disagreed. The pro-Trump MAGA channel hosts told a different story insisting NOTHING was typical about the negotiations and Verizon did not even attempt to negotiate a contract.

Verizon is set to drop the right-wing One America News Network (OAN) from its channel lineup after the network and company failed to reach an agreement on a new contract.

Verizon said in a statement to The Hill that it will no longer have the rights to OAN after July 31, and the network will be removed from the television lineup.

“Our negotiation with OAN has been a typical, business as usual carriage negotiation like those that routinely happen between content distributors and content providers,” the statement reads.

Verizon said that the negotiations were based on economic considerations and that OAN did not agree to “fair terms.”

“Our company has long advocated for providing customers with the ability to choose what content they want to watch, and our Fios TV platform offers a wide and diverse choice of programming options, including a la carte options, that strive to meet our millions of customers’ various content needs and preferences,” Verizon said.

The development is a blow to OAN after DirecTV declined to renew its contract with the network in January.

As concerns mount about a possible recession this year, White House National Economic Council director Brian Deese argued that a second consecutive quarter of negative GDP growth was technically “not a recession.”

According to Deese, the “technical definition considers a much broader spectrum of data points.” He also emphasized the need to look ahead rather than “technical debates about backward-looking data.”

CNN “New Day” host John Berman said, “It sounds like you’re anticipating what will be comments from some saying two quarters of negative growth in a row — that’s a recession.”

“Right,” Deese replied. “And certainly, in terms of the technical definition, it’s not a recession. The technical definition considers a much broader spectrum of data points. But in practical terms, what matters to American people is whether they have a little economic breathing room, they have more job opportunities, their wages are going up. That has been Joe Biden’s focus since coming into office. He has had a view of the economy that we need to look to build from the bottom up.”

“What that means is typical working-class people in this country have had trouble affording things for years,” he continued. “He is focused on building a strong, durable, economic recovery here. The WHO has announced that it intends to update its “widely-used gender mainstreaming manual.”

The body says of the manual that it is “updating it in light of new scientific evidence and conceptual progress on gender, health and development.”

What exactly that ‘scientific evidence’ is is still a mystery.

The press release from the WHO states that part of its new findings to go into the manual is that “sex is not limited to male or female.”

The WHO states that it is “going beyond binary approaches to gender and health,” in order “[t]o recognize gender and sexual diversity, or the concepts that gender identity exists on a continuum and that sex is not limited to male or female.”

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has led people to wear face masks daily in public.

Although the effectiveness of face masks against viral transmission has been extensively studied, there have been few reports on potential hygiene issues due to bacteria and fungi attached to the face masks.

We aimed to (1) quantify and identify the bacteria and fungi attaching to the masks, and (2) investigate whether the mask-attached microbes could be associated with the types and usage of the masks and individual lifestyles.

We surveyed 109 volunteers on their mask usage and lifestyles, and cultured bacteria and fungi from either the face-side or outer-side of their masks.

The bacterial colony numbers were greater on the face-side than the outer-side; the fungal colony numbers were fewer on the face-side than the outer-side.

A longer mask usage significantly increased the fungal colony numbers but not the bacterial colony numbers.

Although most identified microbes were non-pathogenic in humans; Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Cladosporium, we found several pathogenic microbes; Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Aspergillus, and Microsporum.

We also found no associations of mask-attached microbes with the transportation methods or gargling.

We propose that immunocompromised people should avoid repeated use of masks to prevent microbial infection.

Microbial colonies and lifestyles: gargling, transportation, and natto consumption

We determined whether individual lifestyles could affect microbial counts on the masks that originate from the host (i.e., human) or the environment.

One of the environmental factors that seemed to affect the levels of microbes on the masks is transportation to commute (Fig. 3a).

Here, we classified into three transportation systems: (1) public transportation, including trains and buses; (2) private vehicles such as cars and trucks; and (3) walking, bicycles, and motorbikes.

We found no differences in the bacterial or fungal colony counts on both sides of the masks among the three transportation systems.

The White House’s Office of the National Cyber Director has a new Deputy National Cyber Director: Camille Stewart Gloster, a former Google executive who specialized in removing “disinformation” from the tech giant’s app store, and in her spare time rants about “systemic racism” in America.

In a tweet, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) accused the Biden administration of appointing a leftist “social justice warrior” to run the cyber office.

“The Big Tech, Big Government alliance continues,” said Sen. Hawley.

Gloster is a prime example of the extensively documented revolving door between Google and Democrat administrations. Prior to working for the tech giant, she was Senior Policy Advisor for Cyber, Infrastructure & Resilience Policy at the Department of Homeland Security under President Obama.

At Google, she was Head of Security Policy for Google Play and Android at Google, where she led “security, privacy, election integrity, and dis/mis-information.”

“Disinformation” and “misinformation” are terms used by tech and media elites as a pretext to suppress information they dislike. One such example is the Hunter Biden laptop story, which was baselessly condemned at the time of its publication as potential “Russian disinformation.”

Former security officials, Gloster’s professional peers, played a key role in giving legitimacy to the Russian scapegoat narrative.

In her tweets, Gloster has demonstrated her ability to tie far-left causes like “systemic racism” to the seemingly unrelated topic of cybersecurity.

“Systemic racism is a cybersecurity threat,” wrote Gloster in 2020, quoting an article from the Council on Foreign Relations.

“Cybersecurity is about people & ignoring how technology shows up in the lives of ALL people leaves us vulnerable,” said Gloster in a later tweet.

In 2020, following the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha Wisconsin, Gloster said America’s “#NatSec apparatus must be a part of dismantling systemic racism” (Blake, holding a knife at the time, had been physically fighting police before being shot).

The Office Of The National Cyber Director was established in 2021 with the goal of strengthening U.S. cybersecurity policy. Its first hires were from Microsoft and the CIA.

The hiring of a “misinformation” expert to fill this role falls in line with the Biden Administration’s trend of using the national security state for domestic political goals, the most prominent example being the Department of Homeland Security’s “disinformation governance board.” Gloster has already stated that the partisan notion of “systemic racism” should be a concern of the U.S. national security apparatus.

Sri Lanka’s new president Ranil Wickremesinghe is enforcing a QR code digital ID program to access gas in an effort to ration fuel.

Sri Lankans must now comply with the new Fuel Quota policies requiring them to use their National Identity Card Numbers to apply for an assigned QR code to access a gas pump.

The Sri Lankan government is employing the country’s armed guards to enforce the QR code requirement.

As Counter Signal reports:

Sri Lankans will then be made to take turns to get fuel based on the last digit of their vehicle registration numbers. However, tourists and foreigners will be given priority to get fuel in Colombo (the largest city in Sri Lanka) — likely to avoid even more damage to Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

Armed guards are reportedly assisting with implementing the QR code digital ID fuel rationing program. They were also previously deployed to gas stations and equipped with military-grade weapons to prevent those with “non-essential vehicles” from purchasing gas.

The policy was introduced by Sri Lankan Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera.

Testifying before the House public safety committee, RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki denied Monday she’d urged detectives to make public details of weapons used by Nova Scotia mass murderer Gabriel Wortman, and denied that pressure came from then-Public Safety Minister Bill Blair and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“I did not interfere in the investigation around this tragedy,” Lucki said.

“Specifically, I was not directed to publicly release information about weapons used by the perpetrator to help advance pending gun control legislation.”

Former Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, who testified just prior to Lucki, echoed her denials of pressure from both his office and the PMO.

The allegations were uncovered in handwritten notes by RCMP Supt. Darren Campbell included in a report published by the mass casualty inquiry last month — detailing pressure Lucki allegedly put on investigators to release the details. ...

Campbell’s notes, backed by previous commission testimony by RCMP Communications Director Lia Scanlan, described a contentious telephone meeting after an April 28 press conference where a frustrated Lucki chastised officials for not releasing information on Wortman’s firearms — claiming she’d promised both Blair and the Prime Minister the information would be made public.

... Details on the shooter’s arsenal wouldn’t be made public until a November 2020 National Post report that revealed his guns were illegally purchased in the United States and then smuggled into Canada...

Others on that infamous call, however, had different recollections.

Retired RCMP member and former provincial commander Lee Bergerman who told the committee she felt “blindsided” by Lucki, describing her conduct towards her team as inappropriate and disrespectful.

“The tone of her voice and what she said to all of us made it apparent she wasn’t happy,” she testified.

“She felt disrespected and disobeyed.”

She testified both Campbell and Scanlan were particularly upset with Lucki’s conduct, as was Chief Supt. Chris Leather — who described being ‘taken aback.’

Blair, who was public safety minister during the April 2020 mass shooting, denied accusations the government was relying on the information to justify strengthening gun control to Canadians, claiming intentions to ban so-called assault rifles dates back to the earliest days of the Trudeau government.

“The tragedy in Nova Scotia only deepened our resolve,” Blair testified.

Six staffers arrested after climate sit-in at Chuck Schumer’s office

Six staffers were reportedly arrested in Congress on Monday afternoon for staging a sit-in at Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer’s office and protesting about a lack of legislative action on the environment. The congressional staffers and activists had started the demonstration earlier Monday, with 17 staffers sitting in Schumer’s office to demand that he reopen climate negotiations, according to Saul Levin, a policy adviser for progressive congresswoman Cori Bush.

MADISON – Senate Minority Leader Janet Bewley was involved in a fatal car crash Friday that left a mother and her 5-year-old daughter dead.

Bewley, who represents a district that covers the northwestern part of the state, pulled out of a Lake Superior beach entrance and into the path of a car driven by 27-year-old Alyssa Ortman of Pennsylvania, according to the Ashland Police Department. When Ortman's car collided with Bewley's, it spun across Highway 2 and was hit by another vehicle driven by 45-year-old Jodi Munson of Mason.

Ortman's 5-year-old daughter was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Ortman was transported to a nearby hospital where she later died, according to police.

"This is a heartbreaking event for the community. Our thoughts and prayers are focused on the individuals involved, their families and their loved ones," a statement released by Bewley's office said. "Senator Bewley, who was not seriously injured in the accident, wants to thank all the dedicated law enforcement and emergency medical personnel who helped in the aftermath of the accident."

Ashland Police Chief Bill Hagstrom told the Ashland Daily Press on Monday that Bewley was not injured in the crash and that he has not yet determined whether charges will be filed against one of the drivers.

“We’ll be sitting down with them and going over everything as far as determining how it all actually happened,” Hagstrom told the newspaper. “Then we’ll forward everything to the district attorney for their review because it was a fatal accident.”

Ben Baker, a reporting intern for the Journal Sentinel, was on the phone with Bewley on Friday afternoon for an interview he had arranged with her staff about this fall's elections for the Legislature.

Shortly after the interview began, Bewley told Baker she had cataract eye surgery the day before. Minutes later, she stopped talking mid-sentence and the call went silent. When Baker asked Bewley if she was still on the line, she sounded concerned. When Baker asked if she was OK, she said, "Yeah, I'm OK. This is not a good accident."

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s planned speech at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC was canceled at the last minute Monday after his flight had to be diverted due to “severe weather.”

Pence had been scheduled to address the crowd at 5 p.m. before a storm threw his travel plans into chaos, a Heritage Foundation spokesperson confirmed to The Post.

“Due to unexpected severe weather and flight delays, the program with Vice President Pence is postponed,” the foundation said on its website shortly before the speech was set to begin.

“We are working to reschedule for a new date and time and will follow up as soon it is confirmed. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

The ex-veep had been slated to deliver a set of conservative policies that “he believes will save our great nation,” according to the event details.

His speech was expected to push a “freedom agenda” that would create “more economic opportunity” and “restore American leadership on the world stage,” according to prepared remarks obtained earlier by CNN.

Pence’s address was supposed to be held roughly 24 hours before his former running mate, President Donald Trump, was set to return DC for the first time since leaving office.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) and major corporations, following talks at last month’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, launched a new initiative: “Defining and Building the Metaverse.”

As the initiative’s name implies, its stakeholders are still in the process of defining exactly what the term “metaverse” means.

However, according to the WEF, in part, the metaverse involves a moment “at which our digital lives­ — our online identities, experiences, relationships, and assets — become more meaningful to us than our physical lives.”

One person involved in the talks, Julia Goldin, LEGO’s chief product & marketing officer, expressed optimism about how the metaverse could aid in children’s development:

“To us, the priority is to help create a world in which we can give kids all the benefits of the metaverse — one with immersive experiences, creativity and self-expression at its core — in a way that is also safe, protects their rights and promotes their well-being.”

Documents released to the NSW parliament have contradicted previous claims made by the Premier and Trade Minister about the US trade commissioner recruitment process.

The documents reveal briefing notes were sent to then-treasurer Dominic Perrottet, Trade Minister Stuart Ayres and former deputy premier John Barilaro and stated a successful candidate had been picked for the plum New York-based trade commissioner role last year.

The notes contradict previous claims by Mr Perrottet and Mr Ayres that they were told there wasn't a suitable candidate identified in the first recruitment round.

Almost identical briefing notes were sent to all three ministers to notify them of the "outcome of the recruitment search for a STIC (Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner) Americas" in August 2021.

"Note the selection of Ms Jenny West as the successful candidate for the STIC — Americas," the briefing note said.

Jenny West, a former senior bureaucrat within Investment NSW, was verbally offered the job in August last year but the offer was rescinded the following month after the government changed the recruitment process.

Mr Barilaro successfully took a submission to cabinet to change the trade commissioner roles into ministerial appointments.

He successfully applied for the New York job after leaving politics in a second recruitment round.

However, last month he announced he would withdraw from the job, which comes with a $500,000 annual salary package, following intense scrutiny over the recruitment process.

The documents released to the parliament show neither Mr Barilaro nor Mr Perrottet signed the briefing note but Mr Ayres did.

An email chain between a staffer from Investment NSW, which was overseeing the recruitment process, and a staffer from the Treasurer's office has also been released.

In the emails, it is acknowledged that Mr Perrottet's office received the briefing note on August 13, 2021.

"The information provided to my office involves concerns about the FBI's receipt and use of derogatory information relating to Hunter Biden, and the FBI's false portrayal of acquired evidence as disinformation," GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley wrote FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland on July 25. "The volume and consistency of these allegations substantiate their credibility and necessitate this letter."

Grassley, the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said the whistleblowers alleged that legitimate streams of information and intelligence about the president's son were characterized as likely disinformation or prematurely shut down leading up to the 2020 presidential election.

CBS News first reported in April that more than150 financial transactions involving either Hunter or James Biden's global business affairs were flagged as concerning by U.S. banks for further review. CBS News previously reported the U.S. attorney in Delaware has been investigating potential tax fraud, money laundering and foreign influence peddling.

President Biden has said he has confidence his family did the right thing, and he was not involved in the business dealings of his son and brother.

A spokesperson for Delaware U.S. attorney David Weiss declined to comment on whether he was aware of whistleblower allegations that credible reporting about Hunter Biden was allegedly labeled misinformation by the FBI and whether these allegations had been factored into his probe.

In the correspondence, Grassleycited a 2020 FBI intelligence assessment that was "used by an FBI headquarters team to improperly discredit negative Hunter Biden information as disinformation." He continued, "Based on allegations, verified and verifiable derogatory information on Hunter Biden was falsely labeled as disinformation."

InOctober 2020, one month before the election, "an avenue of derogatory Hunter Biden reporting was ordered closed" by a senior FBI agent at the bureau's Washington Field office. An earlier letter from Grassley identified the agent as Timothy Thibault.

"[T]he allegations provided to my office appear to indicate that there was a scheme in place among certain FBI officials to undermine derogatory information connected to Hunter Biden by falsely suggesting it was disinformation," Grassley claimed.

He said whistleblowers from federal law enforcement came forward to his office after a May 31 letter he had written noted a"pattern of active public partisanship in his then public social media content," in reference to Thibault.

In that May 31 letter, Grassley also accused Thibault of likely violations of "[f]ederal laws, regulations and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) guidelines."

"Whistleblowers have reported to me, that although the FBI and Justice Department maintain policies dictating specific standards requiring substantial factual predication to initiate an investigation, Thibault and other Justice Department and FBI employees failed to comply with these requirements."

The letteralso singled out Justice Department official Richard Pilger,identified as the director of the Election Crimes Branch within the Justice Department's Public Integrity Section, who, along with Thibault, were alleged to be "deeply involved in the decisions to open and pursue this investigation," an apparent reference to a probe recently opened into the Trump campaign.

Grassley told Wray and Garland "the opening memo you approved," included media reporting citing research from a "liberal non-profit" when a full investigation of a political nature requires "a heightened factual basis."

Grassley continued, "In light of these allegations, I remain very concerned that political bias by a select group of Justice Department and FBI officials has infected the Justice Department's and FBI's usual process and procedure to open and pursue high-profile and politically charged investigations."

In addition to requesting records from the FBI and the Justice Department by Aug. 8, Grassley complained about the way the bureau and department are being run.

"Attorney General Garland and Director Wray, simply put, based on the allegations that I've received from numerous whistleblowers, you have systemic and existential problems within your agencies," Grassley wrote. "You have an obligation to the country to take these allegations seriously, immediately investigate."

The FBI said it had received the letters but declined any further comment.

Asked for comment on the letter, Justice Department said it had received the letter, declined to comment further, and did not refer CBS News to any counsel for Pilger.

Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Chuck Grassley is demanding Justice Department records concerning the work history of senior FBI officialTimothy Thibault, as well as an investigation into his actions, after revelations of Thibault's apparent political bias on social media, Grassley's office announced.

Department guidelines forbid employees from even giving the appearance of bias, but Thibault, who oversees often highly sensitive public corruption matters that involve political figures, engaged with and amplified partisan content on social media, sometimes even under the label of his official job title.

Grassley, R-Iowa, wrote to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz demanding an investigation into Thibault for potential violations of these regulations, according to the Washington Examiner.

Grassley also sent letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray that declared a preliminary deadline of June 14 for them to share documents about Thibault,including probes he has supervised since 2015.

Grassley wrote that "his actions present a grave risk of political infection and bias in his official decision-making process, creating serious questions with respect to oversight of investigative matters under his purview," emphasizing that "Thibault's social media postings, comments, and 'likes' … demonstrate a pattern of improper commentary related to, for example, ongoing FBI investigations including those under his purview."

Grassley provided numerous examples of social media posts that he said "call into question Thibault's ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of an FBI agent objectively and without bias. His social media posts require investigation into what, if any, Oversight Department leadership has done to ensure that investigative decisions under his charge have not been infected with a political bias."

The FBI did not comment on Grassley's specific accusations but did say all employees are held to exacting standards.

"Without commenting on any specific personnel matters, all FBI employees are held to the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct," the bureau said in a statement. "Any allegations of misconduct are taken seriously and referred to the Inspection Division."

This Committee also leads AmCham in its promotion of best practice entrepreneurship (and hence innovation) that is considered a key factor for increasing Hungary’s competitiveness. It seeks to spark the entrepreneurial spirit in future generations, to highlight best practices, and to build a better future generation of leaders in Hungary. This Committee continuously and actively monitors and comments on new government legislation, regulations and policies. It also cooperates with other AmCham Committees and Policy Task Forces, such as finding solutions to the challenges of innovation and creating a more competitive workforce.

Academic Engagement – Nearly every year the G&T Committee seeks to reinforce its direct dialogue with academia. Either special workshops are organized with a focus on a specific topic or professors are invited to attend otherwise standing conferences or events. As professors seek content from and partnership with the business community for their classroom, this Committee created regional real world-based case studies that are used to educate the next generation of Hungarian leaders.

Private sector and government engagement –The G&T Committee encourages and facilitates a dialogue on integrity and transparency in both the public and private sectors. The Committee holds an annual conference on integrity issues. This year’s event titled Managing the Fallout: How to Mitigate the Negative Impact of a Scandal had opening remarks delivered by David Cornstein, U.S. Ambassador to Hungary, who lauded the importance of Corporate Compliance experts in advising business leaders.Keynote speakerAngela Crawford, Chair of Litigation for DLA Piper’s Miami office followed. She gave a unique “Eye of the Beholder” perspective of corporate employees engaged in corrupt practices, highlighting how offenders are often surprised at what seemed like “a small price to pay” has rather serious consequences for both the company and the individual.FBI Supervisory Special Agent, Tim Thibault, was also Keynote speaker. He played a significant role in the investigation of former Congressman William J. Jefferson and other individuals and presented a fascinating insider overview of this case. He also shared his thoughts on the social “hidden costs” of corruption including in such high-profile cases. The event also featured a panel discussion.

Board Simulation – Besides our conventional case study we launched a second case study which focuses on an SME scenario. In this case, the debate at this privately held company’s board of directors emphasizes the dilemma faced by a formerly fully family-owned business now having to negotiate its future strategy with a venture capital investor. Family tensions complicate the debate, as do other considerations. This educational program serves as an important pillar of engagement between AmCham and academia. Both simulation cases were created at the request of Hungarian professors who lacked real-life case study teaching tools. The Committee is working on developing further Board Simulation cases with additional scenarios that would prove interesting from Corporate Governance and other standpoints.

Start Your Business – The Start your Business! program seeks to develop a stronger sense of entrepreneurship in Hungary Since its launch in 2012, more than 2,300 students and 13 universities in Hungary, and more abroad, have been reached through this program.

Corruption case

In the August 2005 raid, cash was found wrapped in aluminum foil and hidden in a box for pie crusts.

In mid-2005, an investor in the Louisville, Kentucky-based IT firm iGate pled guilty to conspiracy to commit bribery and the payment of $400,000 in bribes to a public official — a then-unnamed member of the U.S. House of Representatives[27] later alleged to be Jefferson. In return for these bribes,the public official was alleged to have agreed to persuading the U.S. Army to test iGate's broadband two-way technology and other iGate products; influencing high-ranking officials in Nigeria, Ghana, and Cameroon; and meeting with personnel of the Export-Import Bank of the United States in order to facilitate potential financing for iGate business deals in those countries.[27]

Based on these allegations, the FBI raided Jefferson's Congressional offices in May 2006. On June 4, 2007, a federal grand jury indicted Jefferson on sixteen felony charges related to corruption, including bribery, racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering, obstruction of justice and other offenses.[28] Jefferson was defeated by Republican Joseph Cao on December 6, 2008,[25] and became the most senior Democrat to lose re-election that year.[29]

In 2009, he was tried in Virginia on federal corruption charges.[30] On August 5, 2009, he was found guilty of eleven of the sixteen corruption counts.[31] On November 13, 2009, Jefferson was sentenced to thirteen years, the longest sentence given to a congressman for bribery or any other crime.

On March 26, 2012, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit affirmed Jefferson's conviction and sentence on ten of the eleven counts on which he was convicted.[32] The Court of Appeals vacated and remanded the conviction on one count of the indictment, involving alleged wire fraud, holding that venue on that count was improper in the federal court in Virginia.[32]

On April 20, 2012, U.S. District Court judge T. S. Ellis III revoked Jefferson's bail and ordered that he report to prison by May 4, 2012 to begin serving his thirteen-year sentence.[33] He reported as ordered at the BOP facility in Beaumont, Texas.[34] He was scheduled for release on August 30, 2023.[35]

Jefferson owed $5 million in legal fees and filed for bankruptcy.[36] On May 1, 2015, Jefferson was permanently disbarred by the Supreme Court of Louisiana.[37]

In the 2016 US Supreme Court case of McDonnell v. United States, the Court remanded the case to the lower court based on issues with the corruption charges against former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell. The Justice Department has since dropped the case and will not prosecute again. Jefferson appealed and U.S. District Judge T. S. Ellis of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia threw out 7 of the most substantive of 10 charges against him on October 5, 2017: dropping convictions for "two counts of soliciting bribes, two counts of wire fraud, and three counts of money laundering."[3]

The judge ordered him released while the government determined the sentence or plans for a retrial.[3] On December 1, the government and Jefferson agreed that (1) given Judge Ellis' ruling dismissing some of the counts, one of the three remaining counts also had to be dismissed; and (2) given the time Jefferson already served in prison as well as the expense involved in continued litigation, the parties agreed that if on resentencing Judge Ellis imposed a sentence of time-served, neither party would take any further appeals from Judge Ellis' decision in which he dismissed most, but not all, of the counts against Jefferson. Judge Ellis subsequently sentenced the former congressman to time served, having spent five and a half years of his initial thirteen-year sentence in federal prison.

FBI warns of COVID-19 vaccine scams

As the United States approach closer to the approval of a Covid-19 vaccination, the FBI is warning Americans of potential vaccine fraud.Timothy Thibault, FBI Washington field officeassistant special agent in charge, told ABC News there could be issues in distributing the vaccine and scammers will use this to their advantage. Thibault’s purported LinkedIn account states that he is currently an assistant special agent in charge at the Washington field office in the nation’s capital, a position it says he has held since August 2020. The account says he has been in the FBI for more than 25 years, was an assistant section chief for international terrorism operations from December 2018 to August 2020 (including being the acting section chief from May 2019 to March 2020), and was a supervisory special agent before that.

Grassley noted Thibault had “liked” a LinkedIn post of a Washington Post opinion piece in February 2020 titled “The Justice Department confirms things are even worse than we feared.” The column repeatedly critiqued Barr’s tenure at the Justice Department.

The senator pointed out thatThibault also likedanother Washington Post column in September 2020, this one titled “William Barr has gone rogue.” The article criticized Barr’s handling of the cases against retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and Trump associate Roger Stone. Grassley showed that Thibault directly posted on his LinkedIn another Washington Post piece in September 2020 titled “Why the Michael Flynn case still matters.”

Grassley also said he had found the FBI official's Twitter account and pointed out that Thibault retweeted an anti-Trump Lincoln Project tweet that said, “Donald Trump is a psychologically broken, embittered, and deeply unhappy man.” The article by the Atlantic, which the Lincoln Project was sharing, was itself titled “Donald Trump is a Broken Man.”

The senator noted Thibault responded to a November 2020 tweet from Lincoln Project co-founder Rick Wilson mocking the election of Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), with Thibault replying, “Thank God for Mississippi — state motto of Alabama.”

When the Rev. Frank Pavone, a Catholic priest, tweeted in December 2019 that “abortion destroys everything it touches” and contended that the impeachment efforts against former President Donald Trump were in part inspired by the former president’s anti-abortion stance,Thibault replied, “Focus on the pedophiles.” The tweet has since been deleted.

When Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) tweeted in June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic that “Dick Cheney says WEAR A MASK” and shared a photo of her father masked up, Thibault replied in a since-deleted tweet, “Your dad was a disgrace.”

Grassley added, “Equally concerning is that ASAC Thibault, while overseeing and directing the FBI’s most significant federal public corruption investigations, traveled to the Czech Republic to attend the same seminar with Bruce and Nellie Ohr in February 2016.”Nellie Ohr had been employed by the opposition research firm Fusion GPS in 2016. Fusion, which had been hired by Clinton campaign general counsel Marc Elias, hired British ex-spy Christopher Steele to create his discredited dossier. Former DOJ official Bruce Ohr served as a back channel to the FBI for Steele after he was cut off as a confidential source.

“These illustrative social media posts call into question ASAC Thibault’s ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of an FBI agent objectively and without bias,” Grassley wrote. “His social media posts require investigation into what, if any, oversight Department leadership has done to ensure that investigative decisions under his charge have not been infected with a political bias.”

Beyond his social media presence, Thibault held a press conference last week in a case in which a man was sentenced to more than two decades in prison for giving a woman drugs laced with fentanyl and then attempting to hide her dead body. He was quoted in a DOJ press release last year related to a former alleged Atomwaffen Division leader being sentenced in a swatting conspiracy.

Grassley said in a footnote that Thibault’s Twitter and LinkedIn had previously featured the same profile picture until he changed both of them. The LinkedIn page now displays his FBI photo, 'while the Twitter account now has a “Pray for Ukraine” picture with a teary eye and the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Thibault tweeted just last month, “Can we give Kentucky to the Russian Federation?” Republican Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul are both from that state.

US tribes ask Pope for records related to Indian boarding schools

President Fawn Sharp of the National Congress of American Indians wrote to Pope Francis, requesting the Catholic Church to work with Native American tribes to get all archives about federal Indian boarding schools in the United States.

“I invite His Holiness and the Catholic Church to work with the National Congress of American Indians to open all records related to Federal Indian boarding schools so that someday soon American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian peoples may host an apostolic - and maybe even apologetic - journey to our tribal lands here in the United States,” Sharp said in the letter on Monday.

Sharp stated that the Pope's visit to Canada has motivated him to deliver an apology on behalf of the Catholic Church for its role in the cultural genocide perpetrated by Canada's residential school system. He described this as the start of a new chapter for truth and reconciliation.

He noted that the Catholic Church is suppressing information about federal US Indian boarding schools that could lead to the discovery of truths.

Sharp said cooperation is the only way to hold abusers accountable or reconcile with the Catholic Church.

The US Department of the Interior released findings from a study in May, revealing that the US operated 408 federal Indian boarding schools and that over 500 Native American children perished in 19 of them.

The Interior Department anticipates that the number of deaths will rise as the investigation progresses.

Native Americans testify to abuse

Native American tribal elders and ex-students testified in Oklahoma about the sexual and physical abuse they endured in US boarding schools. The abuse included and was not limited to beatings, whippings, sexual assaults, forced haircuts, and racist slurs and nicknames.

The elders, coming from various states and tribes, were united on common experiences in the boarding schools designed to snatch the indigenous communities of their cultural identities, "assimilating" them into White America.

In a report released by the department, 400 boarding schools were identified as present between the late 18th century into the last 1960s, though most of them are closed today, with the existing ones holding different missions.

Riverside is one of the oldest, and it has some 800 students enrolled at it from 75 tribes across the country today.

Austrian politician wants Ukrainian oligarchs sanctioned

Wealthy tycoons are funding nationalist militants, lawmaker Martin Graf has claimed

An Austrian MP has called for the EU to impose sanctions on Ukrainian oligarchs, who he claims are the real culprits behind the military conflict between Kiev and Moscow. Martin Graf described the bloc’s current policy on Ukraine deeply flawed.

“I demand that the EU authorities impose sanctions on Ukrainian oligarchs: Seize their yachts, assets and other property and use these funds to help Ukrainian refugees and to offset the losses suffered by the EU citizens due to sanctions [on Russia],” he wrote in a lengthy post on Facebook on Monday, which featured excerpts from a recent interview.

Graf, who represents the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria (FPO), claimed the oligarchs had “sucked Ukraine dry” and “consistently funded” regime changes in Kiev with little regard for the consequences of political turmoil on the country’s economy and society.

He said these same people, who had “bought” the right to do as they please, are now funding Ukrainian nationalists and illegal armed groups. The MP added that the oligarchs had “lost touch with reality” and “led Ukraine into war.”

Graf said he supports the EU sanctions on Russian oligarchs but wondered why Brussels had not made a similar move against Ukrainian tycoons, particularly since it’s the Ukrainian people and the people of Europe who are paying the price for what these people had done.

“These people should be punished for everything they have done to Ukraine and to the whole world now,” Graf stated. The MP also accused the EU of supposedly condoning the actions of Ukrainian oligarchs by allowing them to “enjoy their lives in Europe.”

“If there are no sanctions against Ukrainian oligarchs, this would de facto [serve] as evidence of corruption in the highest ranks of the EU,” the Austrian MP claimed.

Graf served as the third president of the National Council – the lower house of the Austrian parliament – between 2008 and 2013. However, he is no stranger to controversy and was accused of having ties to far-right extremists and even had his parliamentary immunity lifted back in 2009 over allegations of embezzlement. He was never charged, though, and an investigation was discontinued.

His FPO party also faced scrutiny over its alleged links to Russia back in 2019. It signed a cooperation agreement with United Russia – a major Russian party, which is considered to be traditionally supportive of President Vladimir Putin’s policies.

The Capitol Police shooting of Ashli Babbitt, who was killed during the 2021 Capitol incursion, was unjustified, according to a use-of-force expert.

Babbitt, 35, was shot by Capitol Police Lt. Michael Byrd, who was later cleared of any wrongdoing. She was shot in the left shoulder, and died at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Her death is being revisited by The Epoch Times in a documentary called “The Real Story of Jan. 6,” which is featured on Epoch TV.

The documentary includes commentary from Stan Kephart, whose credentials include more than 350 court appearances as an expert witness on police conduct, including excessive force, police discipline, officer safety, and crowd control.

“My conclusion … based on what I saw and observed in the video clips is that Ashli Babbitt was murdered,” said Kephart, who served 42 years in law enforcement and was director of security for the 1984 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.

“She was shot and killed under color of authority by an officer who violated not only the law but his oath and committed an arrestable offense,” Kephart said.

Kephart said that to him, nothing in the video showed Byrd should have felt in danger from Babbitt, a supporter of former President Donald Trump, who was 5-foot-2 and weighed 110-pounds.

“In order for lethal force to be authorized, the officer has to be able to articulate that he or she was in fear of losing his life, was about to be killed, or grievously injured,” Kephart said in the documentary, according to The Epoch Times.

“There is nothing I saw in that film that would indicate that was possible or probable from what unfolded,” he said.

Byrd’s attorney, Mark Schamel, defended Byrd, saying Kephart’s conclusion was “unsupported and erroneous.”

“When Ms. Babbitt entered through the broken window and entered the inner protected area, wearing a backpack and refusing the verbal commands of multiple armed federal officers with weapons drawn, the threat she posed was clear and Lt. Byrd, as the first officer in the final line of defense, was absolutely justified in his use of force,” he said, according to The Epoch Times.

Aaron Babbitt, Ashli’s husband, said former New York City Police Commissioners Bernard Kerik and Ray Kelly have agreed with Kephart, according to The Epoch Times.

“I loved hearing that from him. He’s obviously well-versed in the use of force,” Babbitt told The Epoch Times. “He’s clearly a very smart man who has been in that business for a long time. He should be listened to.”

Babbitt disputed the claim that his late wife, who was draped in a Trump flag at the time of the shooting, “refused” verbal commands from Byrd or anyone.

Witness testimony I’ve read, police included, said they heard no warning,” Babbitt told The Epoch Times, saying the shooting was “complete disregard for human life and not following the use-of-force continuum.”

A Department of Justice investigation found there was insufficient evidence that Byrd used excessive force when he shot and killed Babbitt.
