On the Saturday before Holy Week, the Orthodox Church commemorates a major feast of the year, the miracle of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ when he raised Lazarus from the dead after he had lain in the grave four days.
Here, at the end of Great Lent and the forty days of fasting and penitence, the Church combines this celebration with that of Palm Sunday.
In triumph and joy, the Church bears witness to the power of Christ over death and exalts Him as King before entering the most solemn week of the year, one that leads the faithful in remembrance of His suffering and death and concludes with the great and glorious Feast of Pascha.
Biblical Story
The story of the raising of Lazarus from the dead by Jesus Christ is found in the Gospel of John 11:1-45. Lazarus becomes ill, and his sisters, Mary and Martha send a message to Jesus stating, “Lord, he whom you love is ill.” In response to the message, Jesus says, “This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it” (vv. 1-4).
Jesus did not immediately go to Bethany, the town where Lazarus lived with his sisters. Instead, He remained in the place where He was staying for two more days. After this time, He told his disciples that they were returning to Judea. The disciples immediately expressed their concern, stating that the Jews there had recently tried to stone Him (John 10:31). Jesus replied to His disciples, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? Those who walk during the day do not stumble, because they see the light of this world. But those who walk at night stumble, because the light is not in them” (vv. 5-10).
After He said this, Jesus told his disciples that Lazarus had fallen asleep and that He was going there to wake him. The disciples wondered why He would go to wake Lazarus since it was good for him to sleep if he was ill. Jesus, however, was referring to the death of Lazarus, and thus told the disciples directly that Lazarus was dead (vv. 11-14).

When Jesus arrived at Bethany, Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. Since Bethany was near Jerusalem, many of the Jews had come to console Mary and Martha. When Martha heard that Jesus was approaching she went to meet Him and said to Him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of Him.” Jesus told her that her brother will rise again. Martha said that she knew he would rise again in the resurrection on the last day. Jesus replied, “I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” Jesus asked Martha if she believed this. She said to Him, “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world” (vv. 17-27).
Martha returned to tell Mary that Jesus had come and was asking for her. Mary went to meet Him, and she was followed by those who were consoling her. The mourners followed her thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there. When she came to Jesus, she fell at His feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus saw her weeping and those who were with her, and He was deeply moved. He asked to be taken to the tomb of Lazarus. As Jesus wept for Lazarus the Jews said, “See how He loved him.” Others wondered that if Jesus could open the eyes of the blind, He certainly could have kept Lazarus from dying (vv. 28-37).
Jesus came to the tomb and asked that the stone that covered the door be taken away. Martha remarked that Lazarus had now been in the tomb for four days and that there would be a stench. Jesus replied, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” The stone was taken away, and Jesus looked toward heaven and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When He had said this, He called out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” Lazarus walked out of the tomb, bound with the strips of burial cloth, and Jesus said, “Unbind him, and let him go” (vv. 38-44).
As a result of this miracle, many of the Jews that were present believed in Jesus. Others went and told the Pharisees what Jesus had done. In response the Pharisees and chief priests met and considered how they might arrest Him and put Him to death (v. 45ff).
This miracle is performed by Christ as a reassurance to His disciples before the coming Passion: they are to understand that, though He suffers and dies, yet He is Lord and Victor over death. The resurrection of Lazarus is a prophecy in the form of an action. It foreshadows Christ’s own Resurrection eight days later, and at the same time it anticipates the resurrection of all the righteous on the Last Day: Lazarus is “the saving first-fruits of the regeneration of the world.”
As the liturgical texts emphasise, the miracle at Bethany reveals the two natures of Christ the God-man. Christ asks where Lazarus is laid and weeps for him, and so He shows the fullness of His manhood, involving as it does human ignorance and genuine grief for a beloved friend. Then, disclosing the fullness of His divine power, Christ raises Lazarus from the dead, even though his corpse has already begun to decompose and stink. This double fullness of the Lord’s divinity and His humanity is to be kept in view throughout Holy Week, and above all on Good Friday. On the Cross, we see a genuine human agony, both physical and mental, but we see more than this: we see not only suffering man but suffering God.
According to an ancient tradition, it is said that Lazarus was thirty years old when the Lord raised him; then he lived another thirty years on Cyprus and there reposed in the Lord. It is furthermore related that after he was raised from the dead, he never laughed till the end of his life, but that once only, when he saw someone stealing a clay vessel, he smiled and said, “Clay stealing clay.” His grave is situated in the city of Kition, having the inscription: “Lazarus the four days dead and friend of Christ.” In 890 his sacred relics were transferred to Constantinople by Emperor Leo the Wise, at which time undoubtedly the Emperor composed his stichera for Vespers, “Wishing to behold the tomb of Lazarus . . .”
Today is also the name day of Lazaros and Lazaria, Xronia Polla.

Florida Department of Education Rejects 54 Math Textbooks for ‘Attempting to Indoctrinate Students’ With Critical Race Theory, Common Core
The Florida Department of Education has rejected 54 math textbooks for next school year due to “attempts to indoctrinate students.”
The math texts reportedly contained references to Critical Race Theory, common core, and “social emotional learning.”
“It seems that some publishers attempted to slap a coat of paint on an old house built on the foundation of Common Core, and indoctrinating concepts like race essentialism, especially, bizarrely, for elementary school students,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “I’m grateful that Commissioner Corcoran and his team at the Department have conducted such a thorough vetting of these textbooks to ensure they comply with the law.”
According to a press release from the department, “41 percent of the submitted textbooks were impermissible with either Florida’s new standards or contained prohibited topics – the most in Florida’s history.”
“Reasons for rejecting textbooks included references to Critical Race Theory (CRT), inclusions of Common Core, and the unsolicited addition of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) in mathematics. The highest number of books rejected were for grade levels K-5, where an alarming 71 percent were not appropriately aligned with Florida standards or included prohibited topics and unsolicited strategies,” the press release continued. “Despite rejecting 41 percent of materials submitted, every core mathematics course and grade is covered with at least one textbook.”
Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran said that his team plans to make sure Florida has the highest-quality instructional materials available.
“We’re going to ensure that Florida has the highest-quality instructional materials aligned to our nationally-recognized standards,” said Corcoran. “Florida has become a national leader in education under the vision and leadership of Governor DeSantis. When it comes to education, other states continue to follow Florida’s lead as we continue to reinforce parents’ rights by focusing on providing their children with a world-class education without the fear of indoctrination or exposure to dangerous and divisive concepts in our classrooms.”
DeSantis eliminated common core teachings in the state in 2019.
“It is unfortunate that several publishers, especially at the elementary school grade levels, have ignored this clear communication and have attempted to slip rebranded instructional materials based on Common Core Standards into Florida’s classrooms, while others have included prohibited and divisive concepts such as the tenants of CRT or other unsolicited strategies of indoctrination – despite FDOE’s prior notification,” the statement added.

A midwit might be described as someone who is smart enough to understand the basics of a relatively complex issue without being smart enough to understand its intricacies or consequences. Essentially, such a person occupies the peak of the Dunning-Kruger curve, where the ratio of confidence to experience is at its highest.
The most obvious problem a midwit poses is the result of a kind of intellectual arrogance: that his simple understanding of any issue is in fact a complete understanding and therefore he is perfectly entitled to act upon that simple understanding without further consideration of its consequences.
More deeply though, the midwit, by his nature, tends not to be interested in complicated theories whose framework contains many caveats and exceptions which must always be weighed against the general theory. Much like the dorm-room sophomore, subjects that require the juggling second and third order effects along with the first order ones hold no interest. He instead is often drawn to those ideas that are plausible to him at first sight.
Once a plausible idea is embraced by the midwit, the problem is then compounded by ego: a sense that this simple worldview has to be comprehensive because it's obvious to him. This, in turn, leads to a kind of idolatry, one in which the idea is embraced with quasi-religious fervor. This often then accompanied by self-apotheosis in which he believes his faith in this worldview numbers him among the elect and therefore gives him essentially the divine right to impose his ideas on others.
This, then, leads to the final peril of midwittery. This idolatry of the plausible in its ultimate stages becomes dogmatic. Any evidence to flaws or errors in his rudimentary understanding of the world amounts to heresy and must be ignored or discounted. Those who disagree are not merely wrong, they're evil and must be destroyed.
There are lots of examples of this, perhaps the most striking of which is Marxism. The evidence is overwhelming that it is a flawed theory of economics, politics, and human nature. But it is an idea that refuses to die, despite the historical evidence, largely because so many midwits invest so much time and effort in propounding and propagating the idea. A more recent example is the idea that we can end the pandemic by universal vaccination, an idea that expert epidemiologists and Nobel prize winning immunologists discount as ludicrous.
So, what is the cure to midwittery? Humility. It's the realization that the world is more complicated than it first appears. That any idea or theory must be weighed not merely by the evidence, but also by the witness of history and the intellectual traditions that have been honed by it. If such a cure cannot be found, then we are indeed in danger of the fall before which pride goeth.

t least two people have died after a mass shooting in Pittsburgh, police said.
"Multiple shots have been fired in East Allegheny with several gunshot victims," Pittsburgh Public Safety wrote in a tweet in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The department urged people to avoid the area of E Ohio Street from Madison Avenue to Cedar Avenue. "This is a very active scene," it added.
In an update, the department wrote that about 10 people were receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.
"As many as 10 gunshot victims are being treated at area hospitals, three of them critical. Police are gathering evidence at multiple crime scenes," the tweet said.
In another update, the department confirmed that two people had died.
"Two victims have been pronounced deceased. There are also several injuries from individuals escaping gunfire," the tweet said. "The investigation is ongoing."

Let's pray the ‘Cold War’ between America and Russia doesn't turn hot
The Cold War, a term coined 75 years ago, is still here – and it’s better than what seems to be the only alternative
Long article, how the US and world powers have betrayed Russia at every turn.
...The pivotal moment in modern US-Russia relations came following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. DespiteVladimir Putin being the first global leader to telephone US President George W. Bush and offer Russia’s unconditional support,
Washington returned the gesture in a way that Moscow would not soon forget. Just a few short months later December 13, 2001, Bush gave formal notice that the US would be withdrawing from the Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) Treaty. Signed by Moscow and Washington in 1972, the ABM treaty maintained strategic parity – and more importantly, peace – between the nuclear powers, a type of balancing act that has been described as ‘mutually assured destruction’.
What did the US proceed to do shortly after walking away from the 30-year-old treaty? It went ahead with plans to bolt down a sophisticated anti-ballistic missile system in Poland, a mere stone's throw from the Russian border. To which they deployed soldiers this year.
“The U.S. Navy recently moved sailors aboard its newest base, a strategic installation in northern Poland that will support NATO’s European missile defense system,” Stars & Stripes reported in January. “Citing operational security, the Navy would not say how many personnel were assigned to the base or provide … details about the installation’s size or structure.”
Last year, Mikhail Khodarenok, a retired Russian colonel, discussed in an RT op-ed what this system means for Russia and European security.
“The development of the Aegis Ashore complex in Poland worries Russia,”Khodarenok wrote. “Here is the problem. The Mark 41 launching system can be quickly adjusted, and the SM-3 would be replaced with Tomahawk land attack cruise missiles.”
“What is Russia supposed to do in this situation, when such a transformation of the land-based Aegis system in Poland could pose a very real threat to its national security,” he asked.
Nobody should think, however, that Moscow has not been busy finding ways to respond to the US and NATO efforts at building anti-ballistic systems in Eastern Europe. In fact, Moscow immediately got to work on ways to overcome the US anti-missile systems once Washington pulled out of the ABM Treaty. Those efforts paid off in ways that the US may not have anticipated.
In 2018, Putin delivered a rather unorthodox State of the Nation speech in which he announced the creation of hypersonic missiles that travel so fast that “missile defense systems are useless against them, absolutely pointless,” he said.
“No, nobody really wanted to talk to us about the core of the problem [US anti-missile systems in Eastern Europe], and nobody wanted to listen to us,” the Russian leader stated defiantly. “So listen now.”
Moscow’s concern over the strategic military architecture being constructed in its ‘near abroad’ is no secret. Back in 2007, Putin delivered a speech to the Munich Security Conference in which he emphasized that for Russia, NATO expansion “represents a serious provocation that reduces the level of mutual trust.” He went on to ask the rhetorical question: “against whom is this expansion intended?”
At this point, many more pages could be written on other areas of US-Russian relations that demonstrate the two nuclear superpowers may have survived the Soviet times, each in their own way, but the vestiges of the Cold War continue to live on. From unproven accusations that Russia interfered in the 2016 US presidential election to Washington’s unconcealed displeasure over Russia’s decision to intervene in the Syrian civil war against Islamic State, tensions between the US and Russia are reverting back to Cold War levels, and then some.
And now, with hostilities in Ukraine threatening to spill over into something beyond control, it may be a good time to pray that it remains a Cold War and doesn't turn hot.

Russian forces hit 68 targets across Ukraine overnight, the Defense Ministry has reported
The Russian military has used “high-precision air-launched missiles” to destroy a munitions factory in Brovary, a town outside the Ukrainian capital, Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov told a daily press briefing on Sunday.
He also claimed that 68 targets were hit overnight, including two S-300 air defense missile system radars, as well as several weapons depots and fuel terminals. Russia previously stated that it had struck a tank factory and also a facility that made anti-aircraft and anti-ship missiles in Kiev.
Moscow has stepped up strikes on the Ukrainian capital and surrounding areas in recent days after accusing Ukraine of shelling Russian villages in the border regions. Ukraine has denied attacking Russian territory.
The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed this week the loss of the cruiser Moskva, the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, due to a fire and detonation of ammunition onboard. Ukraine, meanwhile, claimed that it hit the vessel with two missiles.
Russia attacked the neighboring state in late February, following Ukraine’s failure to implement the terms of the Minsk agreements, first signed in 2014, and Moscow’s eventual recognition of the Donbass republics of Donetsk and Lugansk. The German and French brokered protocols were designed to give the breakaway regions special status within the Ukrainian state.

Riots spread in Sweden amid far-right plans to burn Koran
Mobs of youths clashed with police and set fire to vehicles in a bid to disrupt an anti-immigration party’s rallies
Chants of ‘Allahu Akbar’, police cars set on fire, and officers injured – this is what the run-up to Easter looked like in multiple towns and cities across Sweden this week, after the authorities gave a far-right anti-immigration group the go-ahead to stage rallies, which included plans to burn the Koran.
Unrest broke out on Thursday in the city of Linkoping, where gangs of youths clashed with police, injuring three officers. At least two people were detained.
The violence was sparked by the Swedish authorities’ decision to grant permission for a series of anti-Islam rallies. Organized by Rasmus Paludan – a right-wing Danish politician who has spent time in prison on racism-related charges – the events in various places across Sweden were intended to feature the burning of Islam’s holy book, the Koran.

Tensions came to a head on Friday when the Danish firebrand descended on the city of Orebro.
While Paludan and his supporters were initially allowed to hold their rally, it eventually had to be “dissolved” in light of the “serious security situation.” Mobs of rioters protesting against the far-right group pelted police with stones and set fire to four law enforcement vehicles.
So tense was the situation that police had to fire warning shots at one point, as confirmed by a police spokesperson to Swedish media.
While the local police department initially spoke of four injured officers and a bystander, it later updated that number, saying that “about ten colleagues” had sustained injuries.
According to the authorities, some of the policemen taken to the hospital had been hit on the head, while others had suspected arms fractures. Police described the events in Orebro as a “violent riot.”
Similar scenes played out in Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, as well as Malmo and Norrkoping.
On Saturday, unrest was reported in the town of Landskrona, with dozens of youths setting fire to vehicles, tires, and trash cans. According to the local police, none of the law enforcement personnel deployed in the town were harmed as a result. Officials noted that tensions were gradually dying down.
According to the Expressen newspaper, Paludan did manage to burn at least one copy of the Koran in Stockholm’s Rinkeby district on Friday. A video was also posted on Twitter, which appears to show him in the act
Explaining their decision to grant Paludan permission to hold the controversial rallies across the country, the Swedish authorities cited freedom of speech.
Paludan’s anti-Islam performances and the subsequent rioting came ahead of Easter, and during the month of Ramadan.

POTUS will be well insulated/protected on AF1 and abroad (specific locations classified) while these operations are conducted due to the nature of the entrenchment.
