Informed by monthly discussions that spanned nearly four years and an intensive four days of deliberation in 1976, the Commission published the Belmont Report, which identifies basic ethical principles and guidelines that address ethical issues arising from the conduct of research with human subjects.

Former President Bill Clinton and his Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) distributed “watered-down” HIV/AIDs drugs to patients in sub-Saharan Africa, and “likely increased” the risks of morbidity and mortality, according to a draft congressional report obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The congressional study also highlighted the unseemly ties between Bill and two controversial Indian-Americans who have been investigated and sanctioned by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
The most troubling revelations concern the Clinton Foundation’s vigorous promotion of Ranbaxy despite mounting evidence the Indian firm had persistently poor quality control and attempted to cover it up through either faulty or fraudulent reporting to the FDA.
It is unclear at this juncture how many AIDS patients received the “watered-down” drugs.
ProPublica estimated that in 2007 alone, the U.S. Agency for International Development allocated $9 million to Ranbaxy and delivered “more than $1.8 million packages.”
…The whistleblower tried to meet with CHAI and Clinton Foundation officials, but was only met with silence. “I have tried to reach out to them,” he told TheDCNF. “But I haven’t had a great amount of success with the Clinton Foundation.”
CHAI was a part of the Clinton Foundation until 2010, when it spun off into a separate entity. The groups still have some overlapping board members and staff, and they continue to operate in close coordination. Bill Clinton, for example, is deeply involved with both organizations.
Charles Ortel, a Wall Street analyst who has been an outspoken critic of the legal missteps by the Clinton Foundation, claims their separation was “deeply suspect.”
The study also examined the key players in the Clinton-CHAI orbit, the potential for corruption and how the program ultimately benefited the Clinton Foundation in terms of donor contributions.
One relationship unearthed by the report was the American Indian Foundation, which Clinton co-founded with Indian-American businessmen Rajat Gupta and Vinod Gupta in 2001.
Rajat was convicted of insider trading in 2012 in a sensational trial.

Bethesda, Md., Wed., Dec. 19, 2007 – The human body contains trillions of microorganisms, living together with human cells, usually in harmony. Because of their small size, however, microorganisms make up only about one to two percent of the body's mass. Many microbes maintain our health, while others cause illness. Yet, surprisingly little is known about the role this astounding assortment of bacteria, fungi and other microbes play in human health and disease. To better understand these interactions, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) today announced the official launch of the Human Microbiome Project. The human microbiome is the collective genomes of all microorganisms present in or on the human body.
"The human microbiome is largely unexplored," said NIH Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D. "It is essential that we understand how microorganisms interact with the human body to affect health and disease. This project has the potential to transform the ways we understand human health and prevent, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions."
Part of the NIH's Roadmap for Medical Research, the Human Microbiome Project will award a total of $115 million to researchers over the next five years. Initially, researchers will sequence 600 microbial genomes, completing a collection that will total some 1,000 microbial genomes and providing a resource for investigators interested in exploring the human microbiome. Other microbial genomes are being contributed to the collection by individual NIH institutes and internationally funded projects. A meeting between international partners was recently convened to discuss forming an international consortium.
Researchers will then use new, comprehensive laboratory technologies to characterize the microbial communities present in samples taken from healthy human volunteers, even for microbes that cannot be grown in the laboratory. The samples will be collected from five body regions known to be inhabited by microbial communities: the digestive tract, the mouth, the skin, the nose, and the female urogenital tract. Demonstration projects will subsequently be funded to sample the microbiomes from volunteers with specific diseases. This will allow researchers to correlate the relationship between changes in a microbiome present at a particular body site to a specific illness.
"We now understand that there are more microbial cells than human cells in the human body. The Human Microbiome Project offers an opportunity to transform our understanding of the relationships between microbes and humans in health and disease," said Dr. Alan Krensky, the director of the Office of Portfolio Analysis and Strategic Initiatives (OPASI), which oversees the NIH Roadmap for Medical Research.
While the term "microbiome" may be relatively new in biomedical research, most people are familiar with some of the effects - both good and bad - that microbes can have on our health. Consider the example of the biggest reservoir of microbes in humans: the digestive tract. The human gut harbors many beneficial microorganisms, including certain bacteria called probiotics. There is evidence these probiotics, found in dietary supplements, yogurt and other dairy products as well as various soy products, can stimulate the immune system and improve digestive functions. In contrast, previous research suggests that variations in the composition of microbial communities may contribute to chronic health conditions, including diabetes, asthma, obesity and digestive disorders.

"Microbes play a significant role in the health of the digestive tract and many digestive diseases result when the microbial environment is out of balance," said Griffin P. Rodgers, M.D., M.A.C.P., director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and co-chair of the Human Microbiome Project's Implementation Group. "The Human Microbiome Project will help us better understand the microbial environment in the gut, as well as provide us with the tools and technology to expand our exploration into this field of research."
Traditionally, microbiology has focused on the study of individual species as isolated units, making it difficult to develop and inventory all of the microbes in and on the human body. Because their growth is dependent upon a specific natural environment, it's difficult to recreate microbe-host interactions in the laboratory. Advances in next generation DNA sequencing technologies relying on a process called metagenomic sequencing will be used. Instead of isolating each microbe, all of the DNA within the collected samples will be sequenced.
"Our goal is to discover what microbial communities exist in different parts of the human body and to explore how these communities change in the presence of health or disease," said National Human Genome Research Institute Director, Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., co-chair of the Human Microbiome Project Implementation Group. "In addition, we will likely identify novel genes and functional elements in microbial genomes that will reshape the way we think about and approach human biology."
NIH recently awarded $8.2 million to four sequencing centers, to start building a framework and data resources for the Human Microbiome Project. One-year awards were given to the sequencing centers at the Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, and Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, which are part of the NHGRI Large-Scale Sequencing Research Network; and the Broad Institute of MIT/ Harvard, Cambridge, Mass., and the J. Craig Venter Institute, Rockville, Md., which are funded through the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Microbial Genome Sequencing Centers Program.
The objectives of this initial work are to sequence the genomes of 200 microbes that have been isolated from the human body as part of the 1,000 microbial genomes collection. Researchers will also begin recruiting healthy volunteers who will donate samples from the five body regions. NHGRI, NIAID, and the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) have led the initial phases of the project.
"The recent emergence of faster and cost-effective sequencing technologies promises to provide an unprecedented amount of information about these microbial communities, which in turn will bolster the development and refinement of analytical tools and strategies," saidNIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., co-chair of theHuman Microbiome Project's Implementation Group.

Following the precedents set by other large-scale genomics efforts, such as the Human Genome Project and the International HapMap Project, data from the Human Microbiome Project will be swiftly deposited in public databases, including those supported by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/mapview), part of the National Library of Medicine. The project also will fund the establishment of a Data Analysis and Coordinating Center, which will coordinate data access and develop data retrieval tools for the research community.
Also following on the lead of those efforts, the Human Microbiome Project will monitor and support research on the ethical, legal and social implications of the research. Former Nickelodeon star Jared Drake Bell, known for his role on the kid network's "Drake and Josh," has been arrested and charged withcrimes against children.
Bell, 34, was arrested in Cleveland and has been charged with attempted endangering children and disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, online records viewed by Fox News confirm.
Fox 8 in Cleveland has learned that Bell allegedly engaged in an inappropriate chat with a victim that"at times, was sexual in nature."
According to the local outlet, Bell has entered a not guilty plea.
"All facts will be revealed in a courtroom," Bell’s attorney Ian Friedman said Friday, declining to comment further.

We worked closely together from 1998 to 2003 when I was in the United States Senate and he was leading the Human Genome Project, and I have found him to be not only one of the nation’s top scientific minds, but also an exceptional communicator.

Today, as the director of the National Institutes of Health, Collins has a bird’s eye view of the pandemic, our national response, and how the iterative nature of science brought us to be able to respond as well as we have.
The Human Genome Project, an international effort to sequence the human genome, is the only government initiative that I recall coming in early and under budget. While the United States contributed a bit more than half of the budget and the manpower, it was an international effort also involving scientists from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan and China. It was a monstrous effort and Collins served as the project lead, ensuring that all worked together and the genome was completed in 2003—two years ahead of schedule.
“That had never really been tried at that scale before. It was crossing into this territory of Big Science for biology and medicine, but it worked,” Collins told me. The project also launched an era of data release and openness, with all of the human DNA information delivered into the public domain daily. The idea, Collins explained, was that DNA is our shared inheritance and all of us should be able to learn from it.
That mindset—that biomedical research happens faster with collaboration and sharing of data—is responsible for any success we’ve had with the COVID-19 pandemic. While there have been missteps, the technological advances of genomic sequencing and the international data sharing expectations sped our response by months if not years.
“You can draw a direct line from the success of the Genome Project to the fact that we learned so quickly about SARS-CoV-2: what kind of virus this was, what kind of approach might be necessary to go after it,” Collins said. After the Chinese lab released the sequence of the virus in January 2020—a process that takes a good lab just an hour or two now—researchers around the world could begin researching the virus without needing a sample. “That made it possible within 24 hours for the first vaccine design to get started!” Collins said.
The investments the American people made in the Human Genome Project—Collins told me they spent about $3 billion on the project, $400 million of which was on the sequencing itself—have repaid us hundreds of times over in biomedical, technology, computing, and economic advances.

Yet, one year ago, we still were not prepared for a global pandemic. Even though many of the scientific foundations were there, we have still spent 2020 learning hard lessons in funding, logistics, distribution, and more.
“We have this complacency problem, and we need not slip into that,” Collins told me.
I warned about this complacency in a series of 2005 speeches, noting that, “rapid, voluminous, and essential travel and trade; the decline of staffed hospital beds; and a now heavily urbanized and suburbanized American population dependent as never before upon ‘just in time’ but easily-disrupted networks of services and supply,” had left us unprepared to respond to the unknown, deadly pathogens that would inevitably come.
And come, they have.
Collins had kind words to say about my warnings 15 years ago, but, unfortunately, those speeches didn’t save us from our current reality. “Some listened, maybe some didn’t. Other pressures came along that seemed more urgent for that day’s needs and we kind of forgot about the difference between the important and the urgent,” he observed. “We better not do that this time.”
Instead, he highlighted what we have learned in the past 12 months that should serve us well in the future. We have developed new types of public-private partnerships and set up new funding models to more quickly enable urgent research. But there is more work to do. Collins called for active pathogen surveillance and platforms to quickly spin up development of vaccines, therapeutics, monoclonal antibodies, and diagnostics—at scale.
This work needs to be done around the world, not just at home. Collins and I agree wholeheartedly on this point. Now is our teachable moment: Viruses don’t need visas and pandemics have no borders. The U.S. has a significant leadership role to play here, but we can’t do it alone. “We’re in a circumstance, right now, where the boundaries between countries and cultures are increasingly porous both to ideas and ethical decisions—and viruses!” Collins said.
Accomplishing all of these goals will take purposeful funding, diligence, and consistency. “It’s going to take strong voices like yours and maybe mine to keep putting this in front of leaders of the country and the world,” Collins said. “If you want to save the next group of lives from the next pandemic—maybe it’s influenza, maybe it’s another coronavirus, maybe it’s a filovirus, I don’t know, but it’s coming!—this set of lessons must not be forgotten.”

(Reuters) - An unruly passenger who tried breaking into the cockpit of a Delta Air Lines flight bound for Tennessee from California was subdued by cabin crew and fellow passengers as the plane was diverted to New Mexico, officials said.
Delta Flight 386, from Los Angeles bound for Nashville, arrived around 2:20 p.m. local time at Albuquerque International Sunport, where authorities removed the passenger from the plane and took him into custody, an airport spokesperson said.
Delta said the Boeing 737-900 had 162 passengers and six crew members aboard.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation in Albuquerque said on Twitter that it was responding to the incident and that there was "no threat to the public at this time." The FBI provided no further details.
The airline and law enforcement did not say whether the individual was armed, whether he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or what may have prompted his outburst.
No one was hurt during the incident, and the flight resumed its trip to Nashville after the diversion, the airport spokesperson said.
Los Angeles-based CBS News affiliate KCBS-TV posted cellphone video taken by several passengers showing a man lying on his stomach in the aisle of the aircraft repeatedly yelling “Stop this plane" as he was being restrained.
A flight attendant and passengers bound his hands and feet with yellow cord, then carried him to the rear of aircraft, where he was placed face down in a seat, the video clips showed.
“Thanks to the crew and passengers of Delta Flight 386 … who assisted in detaining an unruly passenger as the flight diverted to Albuquerque," Delta said in a statement, adding that aircraft landed without incident and the passenger was removed by law enforcement.

There is no question that large corporations absolutely dominate our society today. They control what we eat, they control what we watch on television, they own most of the stores that we shop at, they provide the energy that our nation depends upon, and they make almost all of the products that we use. Tens of millions of Americans make a living by serving these colossal firms, and at this point some of the biggest corporations are larger than many small countries. But of course the corporations aren’t the top of the food chain. They have owners, and there are 3 giant financial companies that the global elite use to control 88 percent of the corporations that are currently listed on the S&P 500.
The three financial companies that I am talking about are..
BlackRock
Vanguard
State Street
According to CNN, those companies have a combined 15 trillion dollars in combined assets under management. BlackRock, Vanguard and State Street manage a stunning $15 trillion in combined assets, equivalent to more than three-quarters the size of the US economy.
But that is actually an old number.
I wanted to come up with a newer number, and so I started digging.
According to Wikipedia, BlackRock had $8.67 trillion in assets under management as of January 2021…
BlackRock, Inc. is an American multinational investment management corporation based in New York City. Founded in 1988, initially as a risk management and fixed income institutional asset manager, BlackRock is the world’s largest asset manager, with $8.67 trillion in assets under management as of January 2021. BlackRock operates globally with 70 offices in 30 countries and clients in 100 countries.
Vanguard is nearly as big. According to Wikipedia, Vanguard had $6.2 trillion in assets under management as of January 2021…
The Vanguard Group, Inc. is an American registered investment advisor based in Malvern, Pennsylvania with about $6.2 trillion in global assets under management, as of January 31, 2020. It is the largest provider of mutual funds and the second-largest provider of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the world after BlackRock’s iShares. In addition to mutual funds and ETFs, Vanguard offers brokerage services, variable and fixed annuities, educational account services, financial planning, asset management, and trust services. Several mutual funds managed by Vanguard are ranked at the top of the list of US mutual funds by assets under management.
While not as large as the other two, State Street had $3.1 trillion in assets under management as of the first month of this year.

Hundreds of vehicles are going unused at Ramstein after the Air Force cuts repair funds worldwide
Hundreds of government vehicles are parked indefinitely at the U.S. Air Force’s largest base in Europe and delays to services are expected after the Air Force unexpectedly slashed vehicle maintenance funds servicewide.
Emergency response, base defense and airfield operations — services considered essential — have not been affected but could be in the future, Ramstein Air Base officials said.
“Our mission here is to sustain the flight line and if we can’t do that, that will create significant issues within the entire Continent and the world,” said Capt. Elizabeth Gentine, 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron vehicle management flight commander.
“We’re doing everything we can to make sure that doesn’t happen and if it comes to that, we’ll definitely seek out other avenues of funding to maintain at least those priority one assets,” she said in an interview late last month.
The base so far has about 500 vehicles parked “with no date to return back to service,” Gentine said.
Ramstein acts as a key hub for aircraft transiting between the U.S. and global hotspots, including in the Middle East, Afghanistan and Africa.
Air Force bases were notified this spring that funding to maintain and repair government vehicles would be cut for the remainder of the fiscal year.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many facilities have been affected. In Europe, most bases lost whatever funds remained in their budgets for vehicle maintenance, officials said.
Incirlik Air Base in Turkey was not affected because their vehicle sustainment operations are contracted, U.S. Air Forces in Europe said.
“These vehicle sustainment cuts impact wings across the Air Force,” said Capt. Rachel Salpietra, a spokeswoman for USAFE and Air Forces Africa. Units in Europe and Africa lost about $2.8 million, she said.
Ramstein parted with about $1.3 million, or just over half of its $2.5 million vehicle maintenance budget. The next largest reductions were at Aviano and Spangdahlem air bases, which lost about $475,000 and $336,000, respectively, according to USAFE.
“Mission impacts vary from base to base but could include decreased ability to maintain the full vehicle fleet (and) decreased ability to support family housing work orders,” Salpietra said.
USAFE-AFAFRICA plans to request money in fiscal year 2022 to offset the rollover effect of the cuts, she said, “but at this point in the fiscal year, we are unable to get additional funding.”
The funds were taken from Air Force base vehicle maintenance budgets to cover a $33 million shortfall incurred after the General Services Administration fleet leasing program was centralized under one logistics wing, officials said. Units previously had managed their own leasing contracts.
“A lot of units had some debts to pay off in order to maintain the GSA fleet contract,” Gentine said.
The 86th Vehicle Readiness Squadron learned of the cuts in late March.
“We had no warning,” Gentine said.
Ramstein base taxi and shuttles have already reduced services. Construction projects could be halted and delays in responding to nonemergency work order requests are also expected.
The squadron recalled more than 200 vehicles from units on base, adding to the 300 or so that were already down for maintenance.
Quality assurance inspections when household goods are moved, security forces response times and coronavirus disinfection work could also see delays at Ramstein.
The 31st Logistics Readiness Squadron at Italy’s Aviano has told units they can pay for parts out of their operating budgets, while all non-mission essential purchases for vehicle maintenance have been delayed, said Staff Sgt. Valerie Halbert, a base spokeswoman.
At RAF Lakenheath in England, “our plan is to try everything in our power to not have to park vehicles,” said Lt. Col. Sarah Bowles, 48th Logistics Readiness Squadron commander, in an email.
The squadron is looking to the wing and other resources to supplement maintenance.
The plan is to prioritize maintenance “based on cost of the repairs and direct mission impact,” Bowles said.
At the end of this budget shortfall, “we may have some ‘not so pretty vehicles,’” she said.

Taiwan had kept it's Covid numbers at virtually zero throughout the "crisis", which has lasted for about 18 months. No Covid problems at all. At the same time, Taiwan had been going through a drought. The water reserves had been depleted to about 10% of capacity. Crops suffered.
In the middle of May, the number of Covid "cases" suddenly start to rise. People panic. The government shuts things down. People start getting the vaccine (WTF?). Taiwan officials dismiss known prophylactics and cures for Covid. Taiwan finally, after 18 months, bows to the Covid agenda.
Then…
The rain finally starts to fall.
Was Taiwan squeezed into finally accepting the Covid agenda through weather warfare?
I dunno…

LONDON (Reuters) - Group of Seven rich nations agreed on Saturday to commit to a global minimum tax of at least 15% on a country by country basis.
"We commit to reaching an equitable solution on the allocation of taxing rights, with market countries awarded taxing rights on at least 20% of profit exceeding a 10% margin for the largest and most profitable multinational enterprises," a communique from G7 finance ministers seen by Reuters said.
"We will provide for appropriate coordination between the application of the new international tax rules and the removal of all Digital Services Taxes, and other relevant similar measures, on all companies."

Now that we know from his own emails that Dr. Fauci lied to us repeatedly, will National Geographic go ahead and release its planned documentary film on him? Sales apparently have been suspended by publisher National Geographic for the planned 80-page, $18 book by Dr. Fauci that was to be published in time for Christmas giving. The documentary seems to have been planned as part of the promotion for the book.
Based on the 45-second promotional video that NatGeo released last February, the documentary looks like an overdose of hagiography. The treacly score alone is a giveaway, but the titles imposed on shots of Fauci’s profile as he us being chauffeured around, reading important papers (emails?), tell us that he is being made into an idol.

Tucker Carlson has accused Dr Anthony Fauci and other public health officials of lying about the severity of the COVID pandemic and ushering in 'medical martial law' to distract from their support of the Wuhan laboratory - where Carlson said the pandemic begun.
Fauci, the nation's top public health expert and Joe Biden's chief medical advisor, on Friday night shrugged off a week of attacks from Carlson and other conservative critics, who blame him both for excessive lockdowns and for funding the lab from where they believe the outbreak escaped, in Wuhan, China.
Fauci told Rachel Maddow on MSNBC that the attacks were 'a terrible, not-happy type of a distraction, but it's all nonsense.'
Carlson, however, continued with his onslaught, and accused Fauci on Friday night of orchestrating a cover-up to distract from his decision to fund the Wuhan lab.
'It's now clear in the earliest days of the pandemic public health officials in Washington were panicked,' Carlson said.
'Officials in Washington were terrified for themselves. They were afraid of being exposed.
'They had used American tax dollars to fund reckless experiments in China that in the end likely created COVID-19.
'If that fact were to become public it would be over. They would be shamed, and ridiculed - possibly even indicted. Their professional lives would be done.
'So they immediately set to work hiding it on a cover-up.'
Carlson argued that Fauci's emails - released this week to BuzzFeed, The Washington Post and anti-vax advocates Informed Consent Action Network - showed that he was deliberately misleading the public.
'Last winter a group of well-known scientists publicly dismissed the lab leak theory in a letter to The Lancet as absurd and categorically untrue,' Carlson said.
'And yet at the same time they wrote emails to each other conceding the virus did look engineered by human hands in a lab. 'Meanwhile, Tony Fauci worked on censorship.'
He accused Fauci of dismissing any suggestion of the 'lab leak' theory in order to cover up the fact that he had authorized payment of $826,000, over six years, to support their research into coronaviruses.
'Fauci made certain that the self-appointed fact checkers who control the flow of information in this country shut down anyone who dared challenge the official story which again we now know was a lie,' said Carlson.
Carlson, who mockingly calls the veteran health expert 'Saint Fauci' or 'Lord Fauci' or 'Pope Fauci', questioned the mortality rate, and asked whether it was bad enough to warrant lockdowns.

German Cardinal Reinhard Marx offers resignation to Pope Francis over sexual abuse 'catastrophe'

The archdiocese of Munich and Freising, where Mr Marx serves as archbishop, published his resignation letter to the Pope online, in multiple languages, and the cardinal said Pope Francis had given him permission to make it public.
"It is important to me to share the responsibility for the catastrophe of the sexual abuse by church officials over the past decades," the 67-year-old Mr Marx wrote in the letter.
But he also issued a challenge of sorts for his fellow bishops to use the opportunity of the scandal to save the church and reform it.
There was no immediate comment from the Vatican, where Mr Marx sits on powerful financial and political bodies.
A Vatican spokesman said that information about resignations is announced in a daily bulletin, and Friday's edition did not mention Mr Marx.
The German cardinal noted that Pope Francis had told him to "keep performing my service as bishop until his decision is made".
Mr Marx, who led the German Bishops' Conference from 2014 until 2020, wrote that investigations during the past decade showed there had been "a lot of personal failures and administrative mistakes but also institutional or 'systemic' failure".
In 2018, a church-commissioned report concluded that at least 3,677 people were abused by clergy in Germany between 1946 and 2014.
More than half of the victims were 13 or younger when the abuse took place, and nearly a third of them were altar boys, according to the report.
Earlier this year, another report came out about the church officials' handling of alleged sexual abuse in the country's western Cologne diocese.
The archbishop of Hamburg, a former Cologne church official who was faulted in that report, offered his resignation to the Pope and was granted a "time out" of unspecified length.
Mr Marx himself has not been implicated in any of the investigative reports to date, but he said all members of the hierarchy shared blame for the failures.
A report is expected this summer about the handling of sexual abuse cases in Mr Marx's archdiocese, German news agency dpa reported.
'The wrong person is leaving'
In his letter to the Pope, Mr Marx said that his offer to resign could be seen as "a personal signal for a new beginning, for a new awakening of the Church, not only in Germany".
"I would like to show that not the ministry is in the foreground but the mission of the Gospel," he added.
Mr Marx's offer to resign was an extraordinary gesture and laid bare the credibility crisis that the sexual abuse scandal created in Germany, as it has in other countries.
To try to recover that credibility, Mr Marx has spearheaded a process of reform and debate with the powerful German laity to address the structural problems that contributed to abuse being allowed to fester unchecked for decades.
But the so-called "Synodal Path" has sparked fierce resistance inside Germany and out, primarily from conservative bishops and priests opposed to opening any debate on issues such as priestly celibacy, women's role in the church and homosexuality.

VATICAN: According to sources in the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace, the first meeting between Pope Francis and US President Joe Biden might take place on June 15.
President Biden might travel to Rome for a meeting with Pope Francis before immediately flying to Geneva for his scheduled summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 16, according to the source. Although the meeting has not been confirmed, another source from the Vatican Secretary of State said that the meeting “is likely to occur.”
President Biden is currently scheduled to be in Europe for the NATO summit, which will take place in Brussels on June 14. According to a June 3 White House statement, he is scheduled to participate in the US-EU summit on June 15, and will meet with leaders of Belgium.
Several days after Biden’s election to the presidency, Biden and Pope Francis had a phone conversation. The circumstances of the call were unique, as popes generally do not communicate directly with the president-elect but rather send official greetings once new presidents are installed.
If confirmed, the meeting – technically speaking, a papal audience – will occur while Biden has yet to appoint a new ambassador to the Holy See.
President Biden is scheduled to travel to Europe in June to participate in several international summits in the United Kingdom, Belgium, and Switzerland.
He will meet with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on June 10 before attending the G7 summit and meeting leaders of major industrialised nations. He and his wife are scheduled to meet with Queen Elizabeth II on June 13.
On June 14, Biden is scheduled to participate in the NATO summit in Brussels, and meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Later in the week, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops will gather virtually for their spring plenary session from June 16-18; at the meeting, the bishops are expected to deliberate and vote on the process of drafting a document regarding Eucharistic coherence.
A proposed outline for the document includes a section on “Eucharistic consistency,” described as, “The nature of eucharistic communion and the problem of serious sin.”
The topic of Communion for Catholic politicians who support permissive laws on evils such as abortion and euthanasia has grown more salient since Biden’s election to the presidency; he is only the second Catholic US president, and supports taxpayer-funded abortion.
Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago and other bishops recently sought to delay the discussion on Eucharistic coherence, but the president of the US Bishops’ Conference, Arch-bishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles, has said the discussion will proceed as planned.––CNA
