Good News: After Public Pressure New Hampshire AG’s Office Rescinds Plan to Move Voting Machines to State Capitol for Investigation

On November 3rd, Republicans won all 4 seats in the NH House of Representatives for the town of Windham. On a hand recount requested by one of the Democrats who lost, all 4 Republicans gained on average over 6% from their original vote total and the Democrat who asked for the recount, lost over 2% of her original total.

After repeated foot-dragging and refusals by the Attorney General’s office to look into this, the largest vote total discrepancy in the history of the State, last Thursday, the NH Senate voted unanimously, 24-0, to pave the way for the AG to do his job and investigate. SB43 was originally put on a fast track to go directly to the House floor for a vote, bypassing the usual committee hearing process. But, at the last minute, House Democrats refused to support such a rules change, forcing the bill to be heard in the House Election Law Committee in early March.

In the lead-up to the planned House vote this week, the AGs office, in a surprise move Monday, notified the town of Windham of their intent to take possession of the 4 voting machines, owned by the town and its citizens, even before the legislative process had been completed. The bill hasn’t passed and therefore is not even ready for signature by the Governor.

Why is the AG suddenly so anxious to take possession of these machines?

After the change in the scheduled vote and swift public outcry to this planned removal of the machines, the AGs office rescinded this notice yesterday.

As this audit is being done to reassure the citizens of Windham that their machines indeed operated properly on Nov. 3rd and that their votes were counted accurately, it is felt by most involved that this Windham audit should be done in front of its citizens, not in the distant State capital of Concord.

It makes no sense to subject sensitive electronic machinery to needless transport in winter and then leave them unattended in Concord, rather than locked in a secure vault in the town, which has ownership of the devices. In following with this sentiment, town officials indicated they would likely refuse to unlock the vault and allow this apparent confiscation of their machines.

To those advocating for this long-delayed investigation, it is clear the AGs office has lost the trust of the people to whom it is accountable, the citizens of not just Windham, but New Hampshire. They have clearly demonstrated their office to be an unwilling participant in this audit process and disrespectful to the rights of the citizens. SB43 is currently scheduled to be heard in the House Election Law Committee on March 5 at 10:30 am. Concerned citizens of the State should contact Committee members to urge support for this bill.

Secretary of State (SOS) Brad Raffensperger invited Dominion CEO John Poulos to speak at the State Election Board (SEB) meeting today in an effort to justify the performance of their expensive, unverifiable voting system that accumulates votes hidden in QR codes voters cannot read. Ironically, Poulos said his company was a victim of “disinformation” while being quick to falsely claim that his Ballot Marking Device (BMD) system produces a “voter verified paper ballot”. If any of our readers know a voter who can verify the content of QR codes produced by the Dominion BMDs please let us know. Testimony in the Curling v. Raffensperger case against Georgia’s Dominion voting system indicates Dominion QR data is encoded but not encrypted. That means it is hackable by outside sources but the voter cannot interpret it even with a QR code reader. It is the worst of both worlds.

Mr. Poulos repeated the common talking point that “nearly 5 million paper ballots were counted three times in the state of Georgia”. That claim is cleverly misleading because:

- The original Georgia count was derived by accumulating hidden votes in the QR codes on the ballots produced by the BMDs

- The machine recount simply rescanned the same QR codes and reprinted the previous unverifiable results

- The hand count audit was too horribly flawed to verify the count of any voting system as we will explain.

Poulos continually claimed his Democracy Suite 5.5 system was proven to be accurate in the November 3rd election by the hand count audit that the state conducted for all ballots 10 days later. This might have been true had the hand count audit not been compromised with three fatal flaws in key Georgia counties. A sworn affidavit from VoterGA’s election integrity expert, Garland Favorito, who served as an audit monitor, recount monitor, State Farm Arena observer, Fulton tabulation observer and monitor coordinator, explains how the SOS and key counties subverted an otherwise beneficial audit:

Gunmen kidnap 317 schoolgirls in northwest Nigeria, police confirm, the 2nd major raid in as many weeks

Police in Nigeria’s Zamfara State have said that 317 schoolgirls were abducted in an armed raid on Friday morning, just one week after 42 people were kidnapped from a boys’ school in neighboring Niger State last week.

“The Zamfara State Police Command in collaboration with the military have commenced a joint search and rescue operation with a view to rescuing the 317 students kidnapped by the armed bandits in Government Girls Science Secondary School Jangebe,” police spokesman Mohammed Shehu said in a statement on Friday.

Speaking earlier on Friday, Sulaiman Tanau Anka, information commissioner for Zamfara State, told Reuters that the girls were taken in a midnight raid by unknown gunmen. Anka added that the attackers came with vehicles and transported the schoolgirls away.

Amnesty International Nigeria called the attack “a serious violation of international humanitarian law” and called on the authorities to do everything in their power to bring about the students’ safe return.

The predominantly Muslim state, which borders the Republic of the Niger to the north, has been repeatedly targeted by bandit groups in recent years. Officials speaking on condition of anonymity told Reuters that the rise in abductions has been fueled in part by sizable government payoffs in exchange for the children.

Just last week, gunmen attacked a boys’ school in neighboring Niger State in Nigeria and abducted 42 people. More than 300 boys were kidnapped from a school in Kankara in December, during President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to his home state.

In 2014, ISIS-linked jihadist group Boko Haram seized 276 girls aged between 12 and 17 from the Government Girls Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok, in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State. While a number of the girls have made successful escapes or been released, more than 100 remain missing.

Citi Says Regulators in Asia Probing Equity Sales Trading Desk

Citigroup Inc. said regulatory agencies in the Asia Pacific region are probing the firm’s equity sales trading desks. The probes are tied to facilitation trades, or transactions in which the bank “trades fully or partially as principal,” Citigroup said in its annual regulatory filing on Friday. The firm said it is cooperating with the investigation.

The bank also provided an update on the $894 million it mistakenly sent to a band of lenders to the troubled cosmetics giant Revlon Inc. in August. Some lenders opted to return roughly $389.8 million, and the bank sued 10 fund managers to recoup the remaining funds. After a trial that was closely watched across Wall Street in December, Citigroup unexpectedly lost the case earlier this month. The bank continues to believe it is entitled to the funds and has said it will appeal.

“As a result of the court’s decision, Citi now has rights as a creditor related to the Revlon loan,” Citigroup said in the filing.

Myanmar's UN envoy raises stakes, stating 'coup must fail'

Myanmar's ambassador to the United Nations gave a sweeping denunciation of the coup in his country on Friday, giving a boost to the anti-military protests at home and raised the stakes for U.N. member countries in their responses to the coup that has killed at least four civilians.

In an extraordinary speech to the General Assembly's informal plenary on Myanmar, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun called on the international community to reject the coup and "use any means necessary" to act against the military regime and protect the country's people, stating that "the coup must fail." His speech overshadowed, but did not outweigh, the strength of preceding remarks by Christine Schraner Burgener, the U.N. special envoy on Myanmar. For the first time since Feb. 1 coup, Burgener urged countries not to "lend legitimacy or recognition" to the military regime, saying the coup was a clear violation of Myanmar's constitution "regardless of what they claim."

She called for the restoration of democracy and gave the first high-level endorsement to a small group of National League for Democracy members of parliament, who were elected in the Nov. 8 poll but were unable to take their seats due to the putsch. The NLD is the party of Myanmar's democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi, who was deposed as de facto leader after being arrested during the coup. The group, called the Committee to Represent the Pyidangsu Hluttaw (CRPH), is a fledgling movement that began with barely 15 MPs who held a virtual swearing-in ceremony on Feb. 4. The CRPH has since struggled for international acknowledgment. But Burgener's endorsement, which is seen as having the backing of the U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, could give the body legitimacy as a form of "parliament in exile," according to several diplomats at the U.N.

It not only provides Myanmar's vast-but-leaderless protest movement a platform to communicate with the outside world, it provides a channel for the international community to communicate with the protest movement. The CRPH on Wednesday announced it had appointed a representative to the U.N. and to handle international relations. The question now is whether the U.N. can or would accept a CRPH representative, even as an informal envoy, and whether it would stand by Myanmar's incumbent U.N. ambassador - who may be forced to seek asylum in the U.S. or elsewhere.

"The U.N. has now said that the military regime is illegitimate; Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun's credentials were issued by the unlawfully removed NLD government," said Laetitia van den Assum, a former Dutch ambassador and former member of the Rakhine Advisory Commission led by the late U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, which investigated the sectarian strife in Myanmar's Rakhine state. "If the junta tries to revoke the appointment of the ambassador and to appoint a new one, U.N. members may be forced to make a choice," she said. Burgener's remarks, she noted, indicated a "game changer" for the U.N. "She clearly stated the junta is illegitimate, while lending credibility to the CRPH. So, it is not the Tatmadaw vs. the NLD. It is the Tatmadawa vs the people of Myanmar," van den Assum added, using the name of Myanmar's military.

Junta leaders have yet to comment on Kyaw Moe Tun's status. In his address to the General Assembly, he spoke in a measured tone that occasionally faltered with emotion, and called for "further strongest possible action from the international community to immediately end the military coup, stop oppressing the innocent people... and to restore democracy."

Virginia school system cancels Dr. Seuss, citing racial 'undertones' in writings

Celebrated American children’s author Dr. Seuss is now considered too controversial for one of Virginia's largest school districts, a new report reveals.

The group also claimed that the characters who were not White in the books were "subservient" to White characters.

Dr. Ben Carson, a retired pediatric neurosurgeon, described the pushing of left-wing transgender ideology upon children as “child abuse” on Friday’s edition of SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow.

Marlow recalled Thursday’s confirmation hearing for Dr. Rachel Levine, a man who describes himself as a woman.

“We’re being told it’s scientific to allow children to change their genders, either with treatments or with surgeries,” Marlow said. “This is not science. It’s so far beyond it, but give me your sense of someone who’s lived his life as a scientific person.”

Carson replied, “Well, I think they have completely neglected biology. Biology tells us that there are males and there are females, and there’s a reason for that, and we also know that the human brain is an incredibly complex organ and it’s not fully developed until your mid- to late-twenties.”

“So why would you be asking a pre-adolescent about these complex issues?” Carson asked. “Why would we even be complicating their lives? Children are curious by nature, and of course they’re going to ask questions and explore things. That doesn’t mean that they want to change their sex. And to confuse them in that way, I think, is child abuse. It certainly has nothing to do with science. These radical things are actually going to ruin people’s lives long term.”

On Thursday, Levine refused to reject “transgender” medical treatment for children when invited to do so by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). Such medical practices include drugs that obstruct puberty and sexual development and surgical mutilation of genitals.

Marlow asked about left-wing political censorship related to the left’s rejection of human biology.

Conservative pundit, author, and podcaster Dan Bongino, who is also a former Secret Service agent, told Fox News’ Sean Hannity Thursday evening that his sources inside the agency are telling him Joe Biden’s mental state is deteriorating to the point it is becoming more than just a little problematic.

Bongino began the segment by noting his shock over a report this week that House Democrats are pushing Biden to relinquish full control over the nuclear launch codes and instead approve a sort of ‘launch by committee’ process that would ostensibly involve Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi, though at age 80, the Speaker herself is also showing signs of, shall we say, ‘mental wear and tear.’

“When the producer sent this to me I had to read it twice…I thought, is this ‘The Babylon Bee,’ ‘The Onion,'” Bongino said, referencing two of the Internet’s top satire news sites. “I’m not kidding, I thought, is he trying to be funny about this?”

The former Secret Service agent and NYPD officer went on to recall how, before the November election, he had been told by agency sources that Biden’s mental acuity was rapidly deteriorating.

“Not a joke and not hyperbole – I’m hearing from people close to the situation that Biden’s cognitive decline is rapidly worsening and is becoming increasingly difficult to mask. The Democrats are going to have to make a decision soon,” Bongino tweeted (his account is no longer live).

As the coronavirus pandemic roiled markets during 2020, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway bought back a record amount of company stock. And the buying spree has continued into 2021, according to the conglomerate’s annual letter that was released Saturday morning. During the fourth quarter the company bought back around $9 billion of Berkshire shares, bringing the total 2020 repurchase to a record $24.7 billion. “Berkshire has repurchased more shares since year-end and is likely to further reduce its share count in the future,” his annual letter stated.

During the third quarter the conglomerate bought back $9 billion of its own stock, up from $5.1 billion during the second quarter. The figures compare to the $5 billion total the company spent on buybacks in 2019.

Buffett emphasized that the company only engages in share repurchase programs when it believes shares are trading below their intrinsic value.

Berkshire’s operating income, which Buffett urges shareholders to concentrate on, came in at $5.02 billion during the fourth quarter, up from $4.42 billion during the same period a year earlier. The company’s net earnings — which account for Berkshire’s big investments in the public market — jumped 23 percent on a year-over-year basis to $35.835 billion. For the full year, however, net earnings slid 48 percent to $42.521 billion. Berkshire Hathaway’s class A shares hit a new all-time high on Thursday, after bouncing 52 percent from the March 23 low. For the year the stock is up about 5 percent, outperforming the S&P 500′s 2 percent gain.

This, in turn, could prolong the shortage of semiconductors used in automobiles. To gauge market trends, Nikkei interviewed major dealers of used machines, which are sold mostly through individual transactions. "Prices on used machines are rising every year," said a source at a major leasing company. "Over the past year, the prices have gone up 20% on average." Prices on core equipment, such as lithography systems, have risen by a factor of three. A Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing source says prices have gone up tenfold compared with right after the 2008 financial crisis. "Nearly 90% of used machines appear to be headed to China," said a source at Mitsubishi UFJ Lease & Finance.

Beijing is pushing to increase domestic production of semiconductors as the U.S. restricts access to its chipmaking technology by Chinese companies. As U.S. sanctions limit China's access to cutting-edge technologies, Chinese manufacturers are hoarding older-generation equipment. "I've heard that some Chinese makers are just buying up machines even if they don't use them right away," said one market source.

The pandemic is also contributing to the popularity of used machines. Demand is brisk for driver ICs used for TV and PC displays, and power management chips used in connected home appliances. Those chips are made from 200mm wafers using older-generation equipment. Since new chipmaking lines use 300mm wafers, not many companies are producing machines for 200mm wafers. As a result "prices on immediately available used machines are higher than those for brand-new machines," said a source at Hitachi Capital. "Machines that were basically worthless several years ago are now selling for 100 million yen [$940,000]," according to a source at a used equipment dealer. In production lines, 20- to 30-year-old machines are operating. "Machines we bring in are shipped directly to the next plants," said an official at Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing. "They literally disappear instantly." The company decreased storage space for used machines it rents in Taiwan last year.

Some manufacturers of chipmaking machines see the revival of older machines as a business chance. Canon, for example, will release lithography equipment for 200mm wafers for the first time in nine years. But other equipment, such as machines used for etching and cleansing, is necessary to produce semiconductors, leaving manufacturers reliant on older machines.

RAF Retires Sentinel R1 Intelligence Gathering Aircraft With Final Mission To Watch Kaliningrad And Belarus

On Feb. 25, 2021, the RAF Sentinel R1 ZJ694 flew its last sortie before retirement. The touch down of mission RRR7303 (“ASCOT 7303”) at RAF Waddington marked the end of 13 years of RAF service for this airframe.

The final mission of ZJ694 could be entirely tracked online. The aircraft operated in one of the regions that have more frequently been watched by the long-range, wide-area battlefield surveillance platform. In fact, RRR7303 flew towards the Baltic and, operating inside NATO airspace of Poland and Lithuania, carried out surveillance activities off Russia’s Kaliningrad semi-exclave, and then close to Belarus. RAF Sentinels have been frequent visitors of the Baltic airspace, often sparking the reaction of the Russian Su-27 Flankers based in Kaliningrad.

The Sentinel R1 is a long-range, wide-area battlefield surveillance aircraft, delivering critical intelligence and target tracking information to British and coalition forces. It has been operationally deployed in support of operations in Afghanistan, Libya, Mali, and, more recently, Iraq and Syria.

Aramco seeks one-year extension on $10 billion loan

Saudi Aramco has asked banks to extend by a year a $10 billion loan it raised last May, two sources familiar with the matter said, suggesting that rebounding crude prices are not pushing the oil giant to reduce debt for the time being. The sources confirmed a report by Loan Pricing Corporation, a fixed-income news provider owned by Refinitiv. It is at the banks’ discretion whether to extend the loan, but lenders will likely agree in order to maintain a good relationship with Aramco in the hope of receiving future business, LPC said citing a banker. One of the sources, who confirmed the report, echoed that, saying: “It’s Aramco. Why not?” Aramco declined to comment.

LPC cited a banker as saying it was possible Aramco would try to push down pricing by arguing that market conditions have improved since May, when oil prices were much lower and there was much uncertainty about the pandemic. The loan started at 50 basis points over LIBOR, a rate that steps up as more money is drawn from the facility, one of the sources told Reuters, adding Aramco could try to reduce pricing by 10 to 15 bps.

Brent crude futures settled at $66.13 a barrel last week. In May last year they were trading at around $30 a barrel, as global demand plunged due to the coronavirus crisis. Sources told Reuters last year that Aramco would use the loan to back its acquisition of a 70% stake in Saudi Basic Industries Corp (SABIC) from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, a deal worth almost $70 billion. LPC had previously reported, citing a banker, that the loan would be repaid with the proceeds from a bond sale by the fourth quarter of 2020. That did not happen, even though Aramco raised $8 billion in a multi-tranche bond deal in November. Saudi Aramco’s profits plummeted last year, but it stuck to a promised $75 billion annual dividend, most of which goes to the Saudi government.

HSBC said this month that Aramco’s prospects look more positive and promising for 2021, hinting at declining net debt and a possible dividend hike.

Omer Ismail, the head of Goldman’s consumer bank, is making a surprise exit to the fintech, according to people with knowledge of the matter. The world’s largest retailer made a splash last month after disclosing plans to offer financial services with an independent venture in a tie-up with investment firm Ribbit Capital without offering much detail. David Stark, one of his top lieutenants at Goldman, will join him in the new venture, the people said, asking not to be identified as the moves haven’t been announced.

Walmart’s move depriving one of Wall Street’s elite firms of the talent atop its own foray into online banking underscores the seriousness of the retailer’s intent to intertwine itself in the financial lives of its customers. The audacious poaching punctuates years of warnings by bank leaders that their industry faces tough new challengers, after regulators smoothed the way for corporate giants and Silicon Valley to expand into payments and other services.

Ismail, in particular, offers rare credentials. He’s credited as one of the key architects behind Goldman’s push into Main Street, seeing through the growth of Marcus into a billion-dollar business in five years.

The departures are a setback for Goldman, which had just entrusted Ismail and Stark with bigger roles. Ismail formally assumed control of the consumer bank at the start of the year. But he’s been tied to it ever since Goldman’s merchant bank set up the side project several years ago.

The investment bank was looking to grow beyond its traditional strengths, and Ismail helped formulate the plan for Marcus - the biggest strategy refresh the firm has seen in three decades. The company ultimately resolved to make itself a serious force in digital banking. Stark played a key role in Goldman’s partnership with Apple Inc. on a credit card, for which the bank provides the financial backbone. Weeks ago, Goldman named Stark as the head of large partnerships. That’s a key peg for Marcus’s growth, which has already struck deals with Amazon, JetBlue and even Walmart. Fintech ventures typically offer customers low-cost products by eschewing physical branches, and instead using online portals or phones to provide loans, savings accounts or investment options. Walmart said in January it aims to combine its “retail knowledge and scale with Ribbit’s fintech expertise” to serve shoppers and associates. Walmart will own a majority of the new venture, but in Ribbit, it has a partner that’s made big bets in the fintech space including backing Robinhood Markets Inc., the popular no-fee brokerage.

In December, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. approved a final rule governing so-called industrial loan companies that would make it easier for major businesses to seek banking charters while escaping capital and liquidity demands faced by dedicated financial firms. That’s a worrying prospect for banks facing the risk of going up against against corporate behemoths that could lean on their huge customer base to eat into the banking wallet.

Ismail’s predecessor Harit Talwar is still a chairman at Marcus and will probably continue to play a key role with the division after Ismail’s exit. The unit also hired a former Stripe Inc. executive Swati Bhatia as the head of its direct-to-consumer business earlier this month.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc GS.N on Friday won a charter from New York State's banking department, a key step in the Wall Street bank's effort to change its investment banking model and gather deposits. The new bank will be called Goldman Sachs Bank USA, and include Goldman Sachs Capital Markets LP, Goldman Sachs Credit Partners LP and Goldman Sachs Mortgage Co, the banking department said. Goldman will merge its Utah-based industrial loan company into its New York-chartered trust company. Goldman Sachs Bank will be based in New York City. A Goldman spokeswoman declined to comment.

The approval came two months after the Federal Reserve designated Goldman and rival Morgan Stanley MS.N as bank holding companies. That change gives them access to more low-cost funding and the $700 billion federal bank bailout, but requires greater regulatory scrutiny and reduced risk.

Japan's Mizuho Bank reports large-scale ATM system failure

Mizuho Bank said Sunday a glitch affecting more than half of its 5,400 automated teller machines had prevented customers from withdrawing cash.

The system failure apparently occurred nationwide, one of Japan's largest banks said. In some cases, ATMs stopped functioning and cash cards were not returned. Its internet banking service also failed to complete some transactions. The system started to recover after being rebooted, but the work was not completed as of 9 p.m., the bank said.

Mizuho was informed of problems with its ATMs from Sunday morning. Of the 5,395 ATMs, 2,956 had stopped functioning by 7:40 p.m. "We apologize for any inconvenience," the banking arm of Mizuho Financial Group Inc. said on its website, asking customers to use the ATMs of its partner banks if they need money immediately. Mizuho Financial has experienced large-scale system failures in the past. In April 2002, when its affiliated banks were reorganized, problems at ATMs resulted in 2.5 million electronic withdrawals and other transactions being delayed. In March 2011, ATM and counter transactions were temporarily suspended and more than 1 million money transfers were delayed soon after the massive earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan.

CAE Nears Deal to Buy L3Harris’s Military-Training Business

CAE Inc. CAE -1.85% is nearing a deal to buy L3Harris Technologies Inc.’s LHX -2.72% military-training division for $1.05 billion, according to people familiar with the matter, in a move that would expand the Canadian aerospace company’s defense business. An agreement is expected Monday, assuming talks don’t fall apart, the people said.

The unit includes three main businesses: Link, which provides military training in the U.S.; Doss Aviation, which provides flight training to the U.S. Air Force; and AMI, which designs and makes simulator hardware. The business, which has about $500 million in annual revenue, is expected to be based in Tampa, Fla., after the deal’s close, the people said.

Saint-Laurent, Quebec-based CAE expects the deal to be accretive to earnings per share and forecasts cost savings of roughly 35 million to 45 million Canadian dollars a year in the second year post-close, the people said. It is to be funded by a private placement of roughly C$700 million, equivalent to about US$549.4 million, from two institutional investors, they said. CAE has a market value of around C$9.5 billion. It has historically specialized in flight simulators and training devices and has been broadening its reach through several deals in recent months, though none anywhere near the size of the deal being discussed for the L3Harris unit. The Canadian company is a market leader in training pilots for commercial jetliners and makes flight simulators for the Boeing Co. BA -2.05% 737 MAX and other jets, which has left it hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic-driven slump in global air travel.

CAE, which also produces health equipment such as ventilators, has looked to expand and improve margins at its defense business, hiring two senior executives from L3Harris. Melbourne, Fla.-based L3Harris, which has a market value of $38 billion, was formed by the 2019 merger of Harris Corp. and L3 Technologies Inc. It was at the time the largest-ever defense-industry merger, with a transaction value of more than $15 billion. It was eclipsed by the 2020 combination of Raytheon Co. and United Technologies Corp. RTX -1.81% to form Raytheon Technologies Corp. The defense industry’s outlook has improved during the pandemic, a reversal after years in which commercial-aerospace spending growth looked more promising. Companies with large portions of revenues dependent on commercial spending, including Boeing and its suppliers, have suffered as people sharply cut back on business and leisure travel.

The sale of the military-training business would take L3Harris most of the way to meeting its target of divesting itself of assets accounting for as much as 10% of sales and using all of the proceeds for share buybacks. It sold its airport-security unit for $1 billion to Leidos Holdings Inc. LDOS -0.76% last year, as well as some smaller businesses. L3Harris also has a division that trains jetliner pilots and builds flight simulators for the 737 MAX and other jets.

Japan senior official central to son of Suga scandal resigns

A senior press official of Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's Cabinet has resigned, the government said Monday, after she drew fire over an ethics scandal involving the premier's eldest son.

Cabinet Public Relations Secretary Makiko Yamada, who moderates Suga's news conferences, has been hospitalized, a government source said. The reason for her hospitalization remains unknown. She was due to appear in parliament to face questioning over the scandal later Monday. Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said at the House of Representatives' Budget Committee the government accepted her letter of resignation after she reported on Sunday evening that she was unwell and could no longer fulfill her duties. Yamada came under criticism after she was found to have been treated to a dinner worth 74,000 yen ($700) in 2019 by Seigo Suga, who works for Tohokushinsha Film Corp. At the time, she was a senior bureaucrat at the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry. The company runs a satellite broadcasting business, to which the ministry grants licenses.

The National Public Service Ethics Law prohibits central government officials from receiving favors from companies in sectors it regulates. Eleven officials of the communications ministry have been reprimanded after they were wined and dined by officials of the company, but Yamada escaped a reprimand as she has already left the ministry and the ethics code does not cover an individual granted special status to serve in a government post. Yamada has offered to forfeit 60 percent of her salary as a press official for one month, or approximately 700,000 yen, over the scandal, but opposition legislators have called for her resignation. Yamada became Japan's first female Cabinet public relations secretary under Suga and the first female executive secretary for a prime minister under his predecessor Shinzo Abe.

Tohokushinsha has subjected Seigo Suga to disciplinary action and dismissed him as head of the hobby and entertainment community operations at the firm's media business division. Tohokushinsha President Kiyotaka Ninomiya has also stepped down over the scandal.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was found guilty of corruption and influence peddling by a Paris court Monday and was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year suspended sentence. Sarkozy served as president from 2007 to 2012 and was convicted over attempts to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate regarding a lawsuit involving the former leader. The 66-year-old politician was told he would be entitled to request being detained in-home with an electronic bracelet.

Last year, Sarkozy denied any allegations against him during a 10-day trial over his charges. He stands as the first former president in France's modern history to have gone to trial for corruption. Sarkozy will endure an additional trial later this month, with 13 others, facing charges of illegal financing his 2012 presidential campaign. Sarkozy's conservative party is suspected by prosecutors of spending 42.8 million euros ($50.7 million) to finance his campaign, reportedly nearly twice the authorized spending amount. A separate investigation opened accuses the former president of taking millions from the late-Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi to finance his 2007 campaign. He was detained by police over the matter in 2018.

Two Americans accused of smuggling former Nissan Motor Co. executive Carlos Ghosn out of Tokyo have been transferred by the American authorities to Japanese custody after losing a months-long extradition fight to remain in the U.S. Michael Taylor and his son Peter were handed over to Japanese custody on Monday morning, according to another son, Rudy Taylor. The Taylors face a possible prison sentence of three years on charges they engineered the audacious December 2019 escape in which Ghosn hid inside a black box that was loaded onto a charter jet. The auto executive remains a fugitive.

For months, the Taylors battled extradition in court, arguing the allegations against them did not constitute a crime under Japan’s penal code and that conditions in the country’s prisons amounted to torture. They also hired lobbyists in Washington to press their case with the Trump administration. But none of those efforts paid off. In recent weeks, the federal appeals court in Massachusetts and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to halt the extradition, and the State Department authorized the transfer. Michael Taylor, a security contractor and former Green Beret, has never denied helping Ghosn escape and even described the operation in an interview with Vanity Fair. At the time he fled Japan, Ghosn was free on bail while facing trial on charges of financial misconduct. The Japanese authorities alleged that Peter Taylor met with Ghosn several times before the escape. The Taylors have maintained that Peter played no role in the operation.

The Taylors were arrested in May 2020 at Japan’s request and were held in a jail outside Boston as they fought extradition. If convicted in Tokyo, it’s not clear if they’ll get credit for time served in the U.S. In a letter to the Taylors’ lawyers on Feb. 22, the State Department said it will “inform the Government of Japan of the amount of time they have been detained,” according to a copy reviewed by Bloomberg News, “so this can be factored into any sentence that may ultimately be imposed under Japanese law, if appropriate.” Ghosn, who has denied the allegations of financial crimes, is living in Beirut. Lebanon does not have an extradition agreement with Japan.

AstraZeneca sold out of vaccine maker Moderna last year

AstraZeneca sold a stake it held in rival COVID-19 vaccine maker Moderna over the course of last year, the Anglo-Swedish drugmaker’s latest annual report shows. London-listed AstraZeneca did not specify how much it sold the stake for, but said that “a large proportion” of the $1.38 billion it recorded in equity portfolio sales last year came from the Moderna disposal.

Moderna, whose coronavirus vaccine was cleared for U.S. emergency use in December, last week said it was expecting $18.4 billion in sales from the vaccine this year, putting it on track for its first profit since its founding in 2010.

AstraZeneca initially invested in Moderna in 2013, paying it $240 million upfront and later building up its stake as it bet on newer technologies to offset losses from patent expiries Shares in Texas-based Moderna, which listed in 2018, surged more than five times in value last year after starting development of its COVID-19 vaccine and receiving its first approval within the span of a few months. The tech billionaire has poured in $750 million to ensure the global supply of a potential coronavirus vaccine being developed by British drug maker AstraZeneca.

AstraZeneca is working with researchers from Oxford University for the potential vaccine. Although the vaccine is still in the development stage, the company has already committed to its mass production and availability. The idea is to shorten the long timeline of vaccine production.

The new funds will be used to increase the supply of the vaccine globally. With this, the total units of the vaccine available for dispense (once developed) will be more than 2 billion.

THE US Capitol will remain on high-alert until mid-March amid a bizarre theory that Donald Trump will become president this week.

Thousands of National Guard troops will remain in Washington over fears QAnon's claim may lead to another attack on the US Capitol, after followers spoke of a "military investigation" into President Joe Biden.

The request for 4,900 National Guard troops to continue their deployments in Washington until March 12 was made by US Capitol Police, Robert Salesses, a Pentagon official said.

"We work very closely with the FBI, Secret Service, and others and the Capitol Police to try to determine what they believe that threat is, and then looking at what they believe is the need for the National Guard, or the types of mission sets that they need support from, we work very closely with them to try to determine what that is.

"Obviously 4900 is a very large number here on the Capitol," he told lawmakers in Congress.

The baseless claim is just the latest peddled by the QAnon crowd, who have been spreading conspiracy theories to millions worldwide over the past few years.

March 4 has become the latest date which the QAnon conspiracy storm is swirling around as proponents believe Trump will somehow be reinstalled as president.

QAnon is a wide-ranging belief which covers all manner of outlandish claims, but its most central tenant is that Trump has been waging a secret war on a cabal of child-eating satanic paedophiles.

It seems their presence is only providing fuel for the QAnon narrative to continue to spread like wildfire across the internet - worming its way into other conspiracy theories.

Trump's own Washington DC hotel has reportedly hiked its rates on March 4 - and it did the same thing on January 5 and 6, other key dates for QAnon, reports Forbes.

Jason Blazakis, a senior fellow at the Soufan Center, said: "Raising room prices will surely be interpreted by QAnon as Trump’s support for the March 4 narrative.

"They absolutely try to interpret the words and actions of President Trump very carefully.”

QAnon has been previously labelled a “domestic terror threat” by the FBI over its tendency the inspire violence.

The latest bizarre connecting of the dots pushes that Trump will be "inaugurated" on March 4 and will be installed as the 19th President of the United States - rolling back the union to the form it had in 1871.

Despite all their predictions failing to materialize and Biden being inaugurated as the president, many Q believers have continued to insist that Trump is still pulling the strings behind the scenes.

Closely tied to falsehoods about the election being stolen pushed by Trump and his most hardcore allies, the conspiracy theorists are claiming a Myanmar-esque coup is about to happen in the US.

'Roaring Kitty' no longer has financial broker license

The Massachusetts financial professional who gained notoriety as GameStop bull “Roaring Kitty” is no longer a broker registered with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, according to the organization’s online records.

Keith Gill, known as Roaring Kitty on YouTube and DeepF***ingValue on Reddit, is no longer a registered financial broker as of Feb. 26, the FINRA records show. Gill became a central figure in a January trading frenzy in which shares of the ailing videogame retailer surged more than 1,000% in two weeks, driven by interest among retail investors in online forums.

Gill, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, is no longer licensed to act as a broker buying and selling securities on behalf of clients or as an investor adviser providing advice about securities to clients. He had been registered as an agent for MML Investors Services LLC, the broker-dealer arm of MassMutual.

MML Investor Services filed the termination request for Gill with FINRA on Friday, stating that an internal review of his “outside activities” was ongoing. A spokesperson for MassMutual did not respond immediately to a request for comment. Gill’s last date of employment with the firm was Jan. 28. A FINRA spokeswoman said a person’s registration is terminated when he or she is no longer employed by a registered firm. She declined to comment on specific individuals.

Last month, Gill was sued for allegedly violating securities laws and causing “huge losses” for investors. He has rebutted claims he violated any laws in testimony to lawmakers. His online broker profile now flags the pending litigation, as well as an ongoing investigation by Massachusetts financial regulators.

Gill is expected to appear before Massachusetts regulators later this week.

Disinformation experts aren’t happy about the trailer for HBO’s QAnon series

It teases what looks like a Hollywood blockbuster rather than a serious documentary

The teaser video for Q: Into the Storm, an upcoming documentary series from HBO about the QAnon conspiracy movement has a lot of deplatforming experts concerned; it looks more like a preview for a spy thriller than a careful examination of the umbrella group of conspiracy theories.

The breathless tone might be effective at building hype, but it has many disinformation experts concerned. Ben Collins, one of the leading journalists covering online radicalization, tweeted that the trailer was “being marketed in a way that could recruit more people.” Promoted by HBO as a series that “charts a labyrinthine journey to unmask the mastermind behind QAnon,” critics pointed out that the trailer felt a lot like “a recruitment video for Q.”

Joan Donovan, research director at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard, told The Verge that, by portraying Q as edgy and exciting, the trailer risked attracting even more people to the cause.

“The most concerning aspect to me is that the reuse of footage found online pieced together in 6 hours of conspiracist content will be validation for the contemporary movement and drive more content/interest,” Donovan said in a message to The Verge. “It’s not like we are 5 years from the insurrection. Q influencers will use the fact of their participation in the documentary to sap more people for donations and build a more loyal audience at a time when many are struggling to contain this anti-Semitic and racist networked conspiracy.”

It’s hard to say how much of those concerns will carry over to the documentary itself. The trailer is less than a minute long, and the docuseries was the result of a three-year global investigation, according to HBO. So it’s possible the series strikes the right tone in how it presents QAnon and its origins, as well as its future. The press release announcing the series says it will “examine the influence of QAnon on American culture and question the consequences of unfettered free speech permeating the darkest corners of the Internet.”

Donovan said she hoped the trailer was a hoax, and that the actual film will show people speaking about how believing in QAnon ruined their relationships with their families and friends, but she wasn’t optimistic. “Somehow I doubt that will be the case,” she said.

QAnon began on 4chan in 2017, when an anonymous person posting as “Q Clearance Patriot” said they had access to classified information showing then-President Donald Trump was fighting a global cabal of pedophiles, whose ranks included celebrities and Democratic politicians. QAnon’s followers also strongly ascribed to the view —falsely pushed by Trump— that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, and many Q proponents have been linked to the January 6th attack on the US Capitol.

Journalists have struggled with how to best cover QAnon; reporting on it without being adequately up to speed, news outlets ran the risk of amplifying and legitimizing some of the group’s more dangerous views. At the same time, ignoring QAnon’s followers or dismissing them as fringe could allow it to metastasize. One of HBO’s promotions for Q: Into the Storm promised that the series will “pull back the curtain” on the group, but without the right context, could further muddy the public’s understanding of QAnon and its reach.

During its heyday, there were thousands of Q-related Facebook groups and Q-related accounts on Twitter and Reddit. Most platforms have banned, or tried to ban, Q-related content and hashtags, but with mixed success. “QAnon depends on centuries-old anti-Jewish tropes and anti-Black narratives about the modern civil rights movement,” Donovan says. “But it’s not that complicated.”

HBO declined to comment.

Austal’s US boss resigns amid probe over navy contract

A regulatory probe into Australian shipmaker Austal’s $11.4b combat vessel project for the US Navy has taken a scalp with the resignation of the company’s US boss.

Western Australian-based Austal said it had accepted the resignation of its US president Craig Perciavalle following the completion of the company’s external investigation into cost overuns on the project. A separate probe by US regulatory authorities and the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is ongoing.

Shares of ASX-listed Austal sank 11.5 per cent to $2.18 on Tuesday after the resignation was announced. Former Honeywell executive Rusty Murdaugh will replace Mr Perciavalle as interim president while a permanent candidate is sought.

The investigations centred on the company’s decision in 2016 to write back profits following additional construction costs required to meet US naval vessel standards, allocation of labour hours for the project and procurement of ship components.

It also conceded certain valves on some the ships did not meet all of the required military specifications but contractual clams in relation to the issue had been resolved with the Navy.

Austal was engaging with US regulatory authorities on their investigation but it was not known what action, if any, they would take following the completion of their probe. The company said last year it was not aware of any wrongdoing.

“The company is confident that the proactive steps it has already implemented to strengthen internal reporting and compliance practices will be taken into account in determining whether there are any potential consequences arising from matters identified by the investigation,” the company said. Comment has been sought from the Department of Justice and the SEC.

Founded in 1988, Austal is Australia’s largest defence exporter with shipyards in Australia, the US, the Philippines and Vietnam. It has built more than 300 vessels for more than 100 commercial and defence operators in 54 countries.

Austal said its relationship with the US Defence Department remained strong and it had already expanded its compliance and governance practices in the US.

“This demonstrates the seriousness with which Austal is taking this issue and its determination to meet and exceed its global risk and compliance responsibilities,” the company said in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange.

Austal said the vessels had cost more to construct than originally anticipated due in large part to additional measures to ensure they could withstand shocks, such as underwater explosions, in combat conditions. “The company announced a one-off write back of WIP (work in progress) in July 2016 to fully reflect these additional costs,” the company said.

The company, which will report its half-yearly results on Friday, warned last year that the investigation could lead to civil or criminal penalties along with debarment from future US Government contracts. It said its financial provisions were based on an assumption that the matter does not proceed beyond an investigation.

“Any of these potential changes could have a material adverse effect on consolidated financial position, results of operations, or cash flows,” the company said in its 2020 annual report

Austal has built and delivered 13, $600m Littoral Combat Ships for the US Navy, with another eight contracted and in various stages of construction.

The last vessel, the USS Mobile, was delivered to the navy from the company’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, in December. The 127m trimaran-hulled ships can carry two helicopters and travel at 40 knots.

S.Korea unveils 15 trln won extra budget to aid small businesses, protect jobs

South Korea is drafting an extra budget of 15 trillion won ($13.38 billion), it said on Tuesday, to boost support for small businesses and safeguard jobs as the resurgent coronavirus forces the government to retain social distancing curbs. The finance ministry said total government spending would increase to a record 573.0 trillion won this year, up 11.9% from last year, while expected tax revenue is seen growing just 0.3%. That is set to worsen the debt-to-GDP ratio by 8.4 percentage points to a record 48.2% in 2021, versus 43.9% last year. “We want to make sure there are no blind spots left when it comes to using support funds (for small businesses), compared to how we spent them before,” Ahn Do Geol, the deputy finance minister for the budget, told a news conference. The left-leaning government has urged conglomerates to share some of their profits with smaller businesses that have borne the brunt of the pandemic while big exporters enjoyed a rapid recovery in earnings. On Friday, the government said it would extend social distancing rules for two weeks nationwide, including a ban on private gatherings of more than four, to blunt the virus spread.

The COVID-19 inoculation campaign kicked off the same day was the first step towards an ambitious goal of herd immunity by November. The spending unveiled on Tuesday adds to pandemic-fighting stimulus of about 310 trillion won since last year, when the economy shrank 1.0%, the most since 1998. Beside the extra budget funds, 4.5 trillion won will be allocated towards job-keeping funds and childcare subsidies from the existing budget. Myanmar Junta Asks Forces Not to Use Live Bullets on Protesters

Myanmar’s military has asked security forces responsible for deadly attacks on anti-coup protesters over the weekend not to use live ammunition as international condemnation grows.

The announcement was made in a military-run broadcast after Myanmar on Sunday saw its deadliest day since the Feb. 1 coup, with the United Nations saying at least 18 protesters were killed and 30 others wounded. The military also said Monday that more than 1,300 protesters were arrested during nationwide demonstrations. A new wave of rallies was expected Tuesday after a Myanmar court brought additional charges against detained civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi that could keep her behind bars for an even longer period of time. The rising death toll may increase pressure on governments around the world to take more action against Myanmar’s generals, who refused to recognize a landslide election victory by Suu Kyi’s political party in November.

The call to refrain from using live rounds comes as foreign ministers in the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations are set to hold an informal meeting on Tuesday to discuss the situation in Myanmar for the first time since the coup. Asean has long followed a policy of nonintervention in the domestic affairs of its members, which include Myanmar, and has thus far refrained from condemning the military for its actions or referring to the coup. Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-Ocha reportedly referred to it as a “political issue” that is “their country’s matter.” Indonesia, on the other hand, issued a statement Sunday calling on security forces to “refrain from the use of force and exercise utmost restraint to avoid further casualties.” “Instability in Myanmar ultimately creates danger for the rest of us in Southeast Asia, so it’s not a purely Myanmar situation alone,” Singapore Minister of Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan said during an interview on Monday with local television outlet Channel 5. “Although, as I said, the responsibility for resolving this lies with the authorities in Myanmar.”

Michigan National Guard Troops in DC Hospitalized After Democrat Run City Repeatedly Feeds Them Raw, Undercooked Meat and Meals With Metal Shavings

More than a dozen Michigan National Guard troops deployed to Washington, D.C. have been sickened, with some hospitalized, after being served raw, undercooked meat and mealslaced with metal shavingsaccording to a report by WXYZ-TV reporter Brian Abel Monday evening. Other meals the troops have received courtesy of a contractor selected by the Democrat run D.C. government are leaving the troops malnourished.

The problem with the undercooked food has being going for weeks but apparently yesterday’s meals were so bad they prompted a staff sergeant to contact the Detroit news station.

Guard troops are being kept in D.C. because the Democrats in total control of the federal and local government fear a reprise of the storming of the Capitol that took place January 6. Last week Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said, “We know that members of the militia groups that were present on January 6 have stated their desires that they want to blow up the Capitol and kill as many members as possible with a direct nexus to the State of the Union, which we know that date has not been identified.”

In his report, Abel played a recording of a whistleblower describing meals: 74 with raw beef in one delivery and lunches served on Sunday with metal shavings.

Other meals are described as a dinner roll and Sunny D.

Photos sent by the whistleblower were included in the report showing raw, undercooked chicken, metal shavings on rice and a meal pack with snacks suitable for a school field trip–not deployed troops.

Incredibly, a solution was tried of writing the temperature the food was cooked at on the box, but all that did was show that the food was still being undercooked with germs allowed to flourish in the warm, moist meat during the time it took to be delivered to the troops.

Abel reports soldiers are now being given MREs and that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) is now involved.

California Governor Gavin Newsom was caught eating indoors at a closed restaurant in Fresno over the weekend even though indoor dining is not allowed.

Fresno is currently under the strictest ‘purple tier’ lockdown which does not allow indoor dining.

Newsom was at Los Amigos restaurant to meet with the owners, who received grant relief.

Newsom’s office claims the governor didn’t actually dine at the restaurant but he was seen standing next to a table full of food and drinks.

‘Comedian’ George Lopez joined Newsom and posted a video to his Facebook page endorsing the restaurant’s food.

Governor Newsom was also caught dining at The French Laundry in Napa Valley at $800 per person while telling Californians they couldn’t gather for Thanksgiving.

The effort to recall Newsom has attracted nearly 2 million signatures and only 1.5 million are required to trigger a recall election.

Judicial Watch: New Emails Detail WHO/NIH Accommodations to Chinese Confidentiality ‘Terms’

(Washington, DC) Judicial Watch announced today that it and the Daily Caller News Foundation (DCNF) received 301 pages of emails and other records of Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. H. Clifford Lane from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services showing that National Institutes of Health (NIH) officials tailored confidentiality forms to China’s terms and that the World Health Organization (WHO) conducted an unreleased, “strictly confidential” COVID-19 epidemiological analysis in January 2020.

Additionally, the emails reveal an independent journalist in China pointing out the inconsistent COVID numbers in China to NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ Deputy Director for Clinical Research and Special Projects Cliff Lane.

The emails were obtained in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia by Judicial Watch on behalf of the DCNF (Daily Caller News Foundation v. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (No. 1:20-cv-01149)).

The lawsuit was filed after HHS failed to respond to the DCNF’s April 1, 2020, FOIA request seeking:

Communications between Dr. Fauci and Deputy Director Lane and World Health Organization officials concerning the novel coronavirus.

Communications of Dr. Fauci and Deputy Director Lane concerning WHO, WHO official Bruce Aylward, WHO Director General Tedros Anhanom, and China.

The new emails include a conversation about confidentiality forms on February 14-15, 2020, between Lane and WHO Technical Officer Mansuk Daniel Han. Han writes: “The forms this time are tailored to China’s terms so we cannot use the ones from before.”

A WHO briefing package sent on February 13, 2020, to NIH officials traveling to China as part of the COVID response ask that the officials wait to share information until they have an agreement with China: “IMPORTANT: Please treat this as sensitive and not for public communications until we have agreed communications with China.”

In an email dated January 20, 2020, a WHO official discusses the epidemiological analysis they conducted of COVID-19 earlier that month and states that it is “strictly confidential,” is “only for,” the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for Infection Hazards (STAG-IH), and “should not be further disseminated.”

In an email dated March 4, 2020, from Chinese journalist Zeng Jia to Lane, a reporter for Caixin Media, points out to Fauci deputy Cliff Lane that the number of cases reported in the WHO Joint China Mission’s report are inconsistent with the number reported by the Wuhan Public Health Committee:

It says on Page 6 [in the WHO report] that there was at least one clinically diagnosed case of coronavirus on December 2th, 2019, in Wuhan; and from Jan 11th to 17th there were new clinically diagnosed and confirmed cases every day in Wuhan, which is not consistent with Wuhan Public Health Committee’s numbers.

In an email dated February 15, 2020, Gauden Galea, head of the WHO office in China, informs the joint mission members traveling to China that all of their activities in China would be arranged by the Chinese Government’s National Health Commission.
