To the editor: While Hal Taussig has great pride in the 20,000 revisions made to the Bible, he makes my argument for me. ("A new edition of the Bible, with 20,000 revisions, should spark 20,000 thoughtful conversations," Opinion, Dec. 24)
Why should the Bible be taken literally as the word of God when humans (or more accurately men) have revised this book to say what they want for millenniums?
It's a nice book of stories, nothing more.

To the editor: The notion of "20,000 revisions, each bringing new light to the Bible" troubles me. I deal with many anti-Christians who want to dismiss the Bible because, they say, it's been changed so many times that it's unreliable.
There is also the matter that so many of these changes merely reflect political correctness. I question the reshaping of the biblical narrative in the image of our own times.
As a seminarian studying the New Testament in Greek, I was jolted every time the familiar English texts deviated from the source. I anticipate many seminarians being in shock to find that the text does not say "brothers and sisters," but instead merely "brothers."

To the editor: Taussig justifies all the revisions of the Bible by stating that "each iteration of the Bible addresses some cultural need."
That misses the purpose of the Bible, which is to serve as a source of spirituality. The updated New Revised Standard Version fails miserably in capturing the spiritual essence of the Bible and thus deprives its readers of the thing they need most from Scripture.
The most spiritual English translation is the original King James version of the Bible. Every subsequent translation has failed to capture the spirituality of Scripture that was beautifully conveyed by the leading English scholars of the 17th century.
While it is true that 17th century English can be difficult to read in the 21st century, subsequent translations very often fail to capture the spiritual essence of the Hebrew and Greek texts — and the updated New Revised Standard Version is no exception.

Gavin Newsom Military Tribunal: Day I
After another delay, Gavin Newsom’s tribunal began on Tuesday morning.
Gavin Newsom wasn’t flashing his ubiquitous pearly smile when he set foot in Guantanamo Bay’s south courtroom and found himself the subject of derisive stares from both Rear Adm. Crandall and the 3-officer panel tasked with weighing the military’s case against him. The man known for spending three hours in makeup and wardrobe prior to public appearances arrived in court wearing a white detainee jumpsuit instead of his preferred button-up shirt, blazer, slacks, and Cole Haan shoes. Unkempt and unshaven, Newsom told the commission he had not hired a defense attorney because to do so would “validate an illegal military justice system.”
“I am here against my will unlawfully and illegally, kidnapped from my home, separated from my beloved wife and children, based on nothing but spurious allegations and baseless evidence. I know this bias court, and I’m loathed to give it that credit, has already found me guilty. Nothing I say will make a difference. So, I choose to invoke my 5th Amendment right to remain silent,” Newsom said.
“Merry Christmas to you too, Mr. Newsom,” Rear Adm. Crandall quipped, and at once played for the tribunal an intentionally blurred clip of Newsom raping a young girl in the underground dungeon of what was his Fair Oakes, California, mansion. Although the female was deliberately obscured, Newsom was clearly visible, his mouth agape as he, bug-eyed and crazy, molested the clearly underage girl.
“Regardless of what he says or doesn’t say now, during an initial deposition he admitted he was high on Adrenochrome, and encouraged others to take it, when this video was made. The child in this video, who was 13 when it was made, is still a minor, and so we are not disclosing her identity. But this is only one example, and we’ve seized a dozen such videos, that show Newsom engaged in sex with underage females,” Rear Adm. Crandall said.
Newsome betrayed his vow of silence, claiming the girl had told him she was 18 and that the sex was consensual.
In response, Rear Adm. Crandall showed the panel sworn written testimony in which the girl described how Newsom, while holding diplomatic parties at his residence, tried to discretely grope and fondle the daughters of his political friends.
“I’d accompanied my parents to a few of his functions saw him brushing up against other girls, sliding his hand over their buttocks, playing with their hair, holding their hips, kissing their shoulders. When I told my father that he was creepy, he said ‘Oh, that’s just how Gavin is—friendly.’ And when I said I didn’t want to attend any more of his parties, I was told that he—Gavin Newsom—would be very disappointed if I was absent. It was the third visit that it happened, and I can’t remember everything, because I don’t want to. I assume he somehow drugged me, took me to that room of his and raped me. My parents seemed so in love with him I didn’t say anything, but I ran away from home. I know that others, like me, were used as party favors,” part of her statement read.
It’s eerie that Gavin Newsom and Hunter Biden seemed to draw criminal inspiration from the same playbook.
Over the next four hours, the panel heard six other young women—some appearing on ZOOM—give testimony supporting the assertion that Gavin Newsom abused his political authority to coerce constituents into prostituting their children or outright ignoring his advances towards them. One girl, identified only as Lauren, who was 16 when she met Newsom, said under oath that the depraved governor began preying on children almost immediately after he’d been elected to office. On January 12, 2019, she met Newsom while flying from California to D.C. aboard a chartered flight filled with political donors—and in some cases, their children—who had helped fund Newsom’s gubernatorial campaign.
“Yeah, I met that bastard,” she said on a ZOOM call. “My parents were in Washington and I was going there to meet them, and they got me on his plane. He sat next to me and kept telling me how pretty I was. He said he wished his daughter was as hot as me. What kind of fucked up person says that? He asked me if I was a virgin and suggested we spend time together. I told him to fuck off and get the hell away from me, and he said that he’d ruin my parents if I told anyone we’d spoken. But I told anyone who’d listen, which was no one. Went to the media, but they ignored me. I hope he rots in hell,” Lauren finished.
Of all the young women who testified, Lauren alone escaped Newsom’s clutches. The others had in some fashion been molested or raped.
After their testimony concluded, Rear Adm. Crandall put the tribunal in recess until Thursday morning, saying he would then focus on evidence detailing Newsom’s Covid crimes.

Queer theory teaches children that it is possible to be born in the wrong body. Polar researchers in Antarctica have contracted COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated and living miles from civilization.
Two thirds of the 25 staff based at Belgium’s Princess Elisabeth Polar Station have caught the virus, the Le Soir newspaper reported, proving there is no escape from the global pandemic.
The outbreak took hold despite all staff passing multiple PCR tests, quarantining and living in one of the most remote places in the world.
All 25 researchers were fully vaccinated and one had a booster shot. Before leaving for the station, they had PCR tests in Belgium two hours before flying to South Africa.
In Cape Town they quarantined for 10 days and took another PCR test.
A further test was needed when leaving for Antarctica and a final one five days after that.
One person tested positive seven days after arriving at the station on Dec 14. The individual was placed in isolation but tests revealed two others had caught the virus.
All three left the station on Dec 23 but the virus has continued to spread.
It is thought to be the omicron variant because that is responsible for 99 per cent of infections in South Africa.

The Belgian scientific base has reported a cluster of cases despite its staff being fully vaccinated
Researchers working at have contracted Covid-19, even though all personnel have been inoculated and any new arrival has to follow rigorous safety protocols.
Two-thirds [666] of the station’s staff of 25 [5:5] have been infected with the coronavirus, Belgium’s polar secretariat confirmed to local media earlier this week. Buthow the virus could have reached the remote station, located some 220km [11.11?] (137 miles) from the Antarctic coast, remains a mystery.
“All those present have received two doses of vaccine, and one person has even received a booster shot,” said Alain Hubert, the facility’s executive operator and head of security measures. All staff members also have to undergo a series of PCR tests on their long journey to the station.
Those en route there take one PCR test in Belgium before leaving for South Africa and another five days after their arrival. They self-isolate for 10 days in Cape Town, then undergo two further tests: one before leaving for Antarctica and another five days after arriving at the station.
Nonetheless, even such strict control measures were apparently not stringent enough, as the first Covid-19 case was reported at the station in mid-December among a group of new arrivals. The person in question was immediately placed in isolation, but two others were soon revealed to have contracted the coronavirus as well.
All three infected researchers were evacuated on December23,but this measure did not stop the virus from spreading further. A virologist contacted by the polar secretariat said the variant that has infected personnel at the station might be Omicron – the highly transmissible strain recently discovered in South Africa.
There are two emergency doctors and all the necessary equipment at the station to treat anyone who falls ill, according to the media. In the meantime, the polar secretariat has placed all personnel under quarantine and put a halt to any new arrivals until the Covid-10 cluster there dissipates. Explorers venturing on two new expeditions had been expected on January 12, but their arrival has now been delayed.

In 2020, at least 13 senators and 35 US representatives held shares of Johnson & Johnson, the medical behemoth that produced the single-shot COVID-19 vaccine that more than 15 million Americans have received.
At least 11 senators and 34 representatives also held shares in 2020 of another COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer, Pfizer. Two representatives or their spouses held shares of Moderna during the same year that the world went on lockdown in response to the pandemic.
Lawmakers held these investments in COVID-19-minded companies as Congress was at the center of pandemic relief efforts. In 2020 and 2021, members of Congress voted on six relief bills together worth nearly $6 trillion. Congress also authorized more than $10 billion to help drug companies develop and distribute vaccines and forced health insurers to cover the cost of getting the shot.
Policymakers especially viewed the coronavirus vaccines developed by Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Moderna — which each spent substantial amounts of money lobbying the federal government in 2020 — as critical to helping countries around the planet overcome the grip of the pandemic.

Germany shuts half of its nuclear plants amid energy crisis
Europe falling into trap of green energy policy, expert says
Germany is shutting down three nuclear power plants on Friday, in a move to halve the country’s remaining nuclear capacity. The measure comes despite the worst ever energy crises the European region has experienced.
The closures, which come as a result of decision to completely phase out atomic energy, taken by Angela Merkel after the Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011, is expected to tighten the current squeeze on gas and energy prices.
Berlin is planning to completely wind down atomic energy by the end of 2022, when its final three plants in Neckarwestheim, Essenbach and Emsland shut.
German state officials can’t prevent the shutdown of nuclear power plants, since they are in somewhat of a bind when it comes to the “green economy,” according to Alexey Mukhin, director of the Center for Political Information.
“Angela Merkel’s decision to shut down nuclear reactors after the disaster at Fukushima has been denounced as bureaucratic,” the analyst said.
“The federal government should have taken very serious efforts to prevent the next scheduled shutdown, but, apparently, they are not allowed to do this by the so-called new rules of the green economy.”
With energy prices across the continent soaring to the unseen levels, the timing of the German plan’s coming to fruition could hardly be worse. In December, Dutch TTF reached €187.78 per megawatt hour, which is 10 times higher than at the start of the year, while electricity prices are soaring as well.
According to Mukhin, the country’s authorities fell into a trap that had been set by Berlin.The expert expressed bewilderment over the dogged attempts by the EU at pushing green energy policies forward amid the worst energy crunch that is most markedly straining the wallet of the European citizens.
“The energy crisis should correct the global economy and ‘green’ policy, but this does not happen, due to the stubbornness, pride and prejudice, even the snobbery and tenacity, of European partners,” Mukhin said.

The Bank of Mexico plans to put its own digital currency in circulation by 2024 to use the latest payments technology to foment financial inclusion in an economy that relies on cash for most transactions, according to the Mexican government.
The central bank considers it important “to use these new technologies and latest-generation payments infrastructure as valuable options to advance financial inclusion in the country,” the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said in a tweet late Wednesday.
The Bank of Mexico has said it is studying the development of a digital currency in several phases. It will use as a basis for the platform the current electronic payments system to expand payment options “under a rapid, safe and efficient” framework, the bank said in a recent report.
Central bank authorities have been in talks with financial institutions about the implementation and the infrastructure needed to launch a digital currency that could be used for basic transactions, a person familiar with the Bank of Mexico’s plans said.
A large number of transactions are done with cash, particularly given the large informal economy, which in 2020 accounted for around 22% of Mexico’s gross domestic product.
That last paragraph explains what you need to know. 22% of the economy is informal and taxes are not collected on a huge chunk of it.
In June, Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas Pliego said he was working on having his Banco Azteca become the first bank in Mexico to accept bitcoin.
The Central Bank squashed the idea but it was going nowhere anyway.
People who hold Bitcoin certainly don't want to convert it to Pesos or even put it in a bank.

Carroll County judge, 82, resigns after 12 years in office
The county judge of Carroll County has announced his resignation.
Sam L. Barr, 82, submitted a resignation letter Tuesday saying his last day in office will be Jan. 31.
Barr has been county judge since 2009.
"I have enjoyed my time serving the people of Carroll County, but, have chosen to take my retirement and spend time with my family and friends," Barr wrote in the letter to County Clerk Connie T. Doss and the Quorum Court members.
Doss said the Quorum Court will fill the position at its Jan. 24 meeting. Barr's replacement will serve until the end of 2022, which is an election year. The person elected in November to the office of county judge will begin serving in January 2023.
In Arkansas, the county judge is the chief executive officer of a county.
Doss said the Quorum Court will appoint a tax collector at its February meeting.
Kay Phillips-Brown, the previous tax collector, died Dec. 20 while still in office.
According to her obituary, Phillips-Brown, 73, was tax collector for 34 years.

“ A prominent American Christian leader, John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in Caliafornia, has issued a call to American church pastors to join in a fight being waged by their Canadian brothers.
Decision Magazine reports that MacArthur wants American Christian church leaders to join with Canadian pastors on Jan. 16 to preach on God's plan for human sexuality.
MacArthur also has posted online a statement that Christian leaders are encouraged to sign.
The problem is a coming Canadian law that specifically contradicts the Bible. According to MacArthur's posting, the preamble to the new Canadian law, which is to take effect Jan. 8, states that "heterosexuality, cisgender gender identity and gender expression that conforms to the sex assigned to a person at birth are to be preferred over other sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions" is a "myth."

Disgruntled mobs. Martial law. A populace under house arrest. A techno-corporate state wielding its power to immobilize huge swaths of the country. A Constitution in tatters.
Between the riots, lockdowns, political theater, and COVID-19 mandates, 2021 was one for the history books.
In our ongoing pursuit of life, liberty and happiness, here were some of the stumbling blocks that kept us fettered:
Riots, martial law and the Deep State’s coup. A simmering pot of political tensions boiled over on January 6, 2021, when protesters stormed the Capitol because the jailer of their choice didn’t get chosen to knock heads for another four years. It took no time at all for the nation’s capital to be placed under a military lockdown, online speech forums restricted, and individuals with subversive or controversial viewpoints ferreted out, investigated, shamed and/or shunned. The subsequent military occupation of the nation’s capital by 25,000 troops as part of the so-called “peaceful” transfer of power from one administration to the next was little more than martial law disguised as national security. The January 6 attempt to storm the Capitol by so-called insurrectionists created the perfect crisis for the Deep State—a.k.a. the Police State a.k.a. the Military Industrial Complex a.k.a. the Techno-Corporate State a.k.a. the Surveillance State—to swoop in and take control.
The imperial president. All of the imperial powers amassed by Donald Trump, Barack Obama and George W. Bush—to kill American citizens without due process, to detain suspects indefinitely, to strip Americans of their citizenship rights, to carry out mass surveillance on Americans without probable cause, to suspend laws during wartime, to disregard laws with which he might disagree, to conduct secret wars and convene secret courts, to sanction torture, to sidestep the legislatures and courts with executive orders and signing statements, to direct the military to operate beyond the reach of the law, to act as a dictator and a tyrant, above the law and beyond any real accountability—were inherited by Joe Biden, the nation’s 46th president.
The Surveillance State. On any given day, the average American going about his daily business was monitored, surveilled, spied on and tracked in more than 20 different ways, by both government and corporate eyes and ears. In such a surveillance ecosystem, we’re all suspects and databits to be tracked, catalogued and targeted. Consider that it took days, if not hours or minutes, for the FBI to begin the process of identifying, tracking and rounding up those suspected of being part of the Capitol riots. Imagine how quickly government agents could target and round up any segment of society they wanted to based on the digital trails and digital footprints we leave behind.
Digital tyranny. In response to the events of Jan. 6, the tech giants meted out their own version of social justice by way of digital tyranny and corporate censorship. Suddenly, individuals, including those who had no ties to the Capitol riots, began to experience lock outs, suspensions and even deletions of their social media accounts. It signaled a turning point in the battle for control over digital speech, one that leaves “we the people” on the losing end of the bargain.
A new war on terror. “Domestic terrorism,” used interchangeably with “anti-government,” “extremist” and “terrorist,” to describe anyone who might fall somewhere on a very broad spectrum of viewpoints that could be considered “dangerous,” became the new poster child for expanding the government’s powers at the expense of civil liberties. As part of his inaugural address, President Biden pledged to wage war on so-called political extremism, ushering in what investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald described as “a wave of new domestic police powers and rhetoric in the name of fighting ‘terrorism’ that are carbon copies of many of the worst excesses of the first War on Terror that began nearly twenty years ago.” The ramifications are so far-reaching as to render almost every American an extremist in word, deed, thought or by association.

Rachel Johnson, sister of Prime Minister Boris Johnson, trended on Twitter after an article she wrote sympathising with Ghislaine Maxwell in November resurfaced.
Writing in British political magazine The Spectator, the Prime Minister’s sister Rachel Johnson wrote a positive piece about her relationship with Ghislaine Maxwell on the 17th of November, shortly before Maxwell’s trial begun.
In a piece titled ‘It’s hard not to pity Ghislaine Maxwell’ which did not actually mention Maxwell until the final paragraph — with Johnson’s initial focus instead being her pet dogs, her mother’s death, and her podcast — she described an intimate encounter between the now-convicted child sex trafficker and her brother.
Johnson said she knew Maxwell when she was at university, describing her as a “shiny glamazon”, and suggested that her brother was at least somewhat familiar with her as well, reecounting that the first time she saw Maxwell she had her “high-heeled boot” resting on Boris’ “thigh”.
It is unknown whether Prime Minister Boris Johnson maintained his friendship with Maxwell post-university.
Rachel Johnson also mentioned that she attended an early Maxwell party and appeared to insinuate that other prominent individuals referred to as “fairweather friends” did as well.
“I’m sure fairweather friends would not reveal they went to a Ghislaine Maxwell party: as Barbara Amiel’s brilliant memoir Friends and Enemies proves, you only know who your real chums are when you’re in the gutter,” she wrote, indicating that she counted herself as such a “chum”.
On the 29th of December, Ghislaine Maxwell, 60, was convicted and found guilty of conspiring to run a sex crimes ring with Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced billionaire who allegedly killed himself while on trial for similar charges.
During the trial in New York the court heard how Maxwell acted as Epstein’s right-hand confidante and accomplice, helping Epstein procure underage girls for sexual acts.
Two of the accusers who testified in the court said they were as young as 14 when Maxwell groomed them and forced them into performing sex acts on Epstein. It was also revealed that Maxwell would sometimes participate in the sexual abuse.

British socialite and convicted sex offender Ghislaine Maxwell has been offered up as a “scapegoat” for deceased millionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, her brother has claimed.
Ian Maxwell, 65, the son of British media tycoon Robert Maxwell and older brother of now-convicted sex-trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, said that his sister is nothing more than a patsy for the sex crimes against children by Jeffrey Epstein, who allegedly killed himself in a New York prison cell in 2019.
“The man who was not on trial and should have been on trial – but escaped the ability of the prosecution to put him on trial because they lost him on their watch, which everyone has conveniently forgotten about – could not be tried,” Mr Maxwell said in an interview with Sky News.
“And therefore they had to find someone who could be tried. They chose Ghislaine Maxwell. They were perfectly entitled to do that.
“But the position the defence has taken – and that I continue to take – is that she was scapegoated in a process that was flawed from the start and she was not given a fair trial and she has not had justice.”
Mr Maxwell went on to profess that he believes Ghislaine was innocent of the charges levied against her, despite being found guilty of five of six counts of sexual exploitation and trafficking girls as young as fourteen years old for Epstein.

From Politico, "Marines kick out 206 troops for refusing Covid-19 vaccine":
The Marine Corps announced Thursday that it has kicked out more troops for refusing the Covid-19 vaccine. The total number of discharges has risen to 206, up from 169 last week.
The fiscal 2022 National Defense Authorization Act, which President Joe Biden signed into law Monday, dictates that the military services cannot dishonorably discharge members for vaccine refusal. The discharges must be either honorable or general under honorable conditions.
Where things stand: Overall, 95 percent of all active-duty Marines have received at least the first dose, while 86 percent of the Reserve force has received the first shot.
The service received 3,247 requests for religious accommodation, with 3,115 of those having been processed and zero requests approved citing readiness concerns.
Most of these troops already had covid and recovered and they're doing us and the world a favor by not getting "vaxxed" and risking the creation of more variants.
They have far better immunity to covid than any of the troops who just took the therapeutics that only work for a few months (allegedly).
We know this whole vax mandate has nothing to do with "combat readiness" because they're actively gutting combat readiness standards as we speak in the name of "diversity."

Peter Schweizer, president of the Government Accountability Institute and host of the Drill Down podcast, said on Thursday that former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) enriched himself and his family by leveraging his political power.
Reid “enriched himself and his family,” Schweizer said on SiriusXM’s Breitbart News Daily with host Alex Marlow, “but you’ve got to give him credit. He had staying power. He had enemies in Washington, DC, but he always seems to overcome them and win.”
Schweizer recalled a quote from Susan McCue, Harry Reid’s former chief of staff, which he included in his 2013 book, Extortion: How Politicians Extract Your Money, Buy Votes, and Line Their Own Pockets. She said Reid was always assessing a person’s vulnerabilities in order to “disarm, to endear, to threaten, but most of all to instill fear.”
“The question is … if you’re really in private practice much at all over the course of 40 years and you’re serving in various government posts, how do you get this wealthy?” Schweizer asked, “and if you look at his career — that kind of a mobster, kind of scare people, use the leverage — played in.
Schweizer recalled an instance of Reid pushing an infrastructure project that increased the value of some property he owned.
He remarked, “In 2005, he’s a senator, he puts in an earmark to build a bridge in Bullhead City in Nevada for $18 million dollars — that’s taking our taxpayer money — this was to join Bullhead City with Arizona, to take it across the river joining Nevada and Arizona. The Arizona delegation said, ‘This is ridiculous. It’s not worth it. There’s another bridge further down the road. It’s not needed.’ But then, when you looked actually at Harry Reid’s holdings, you found out that he actually had a parcel of land right next to — or near — the bridge that was eventually built with taxpayer money. And the land that was valued at $400,000 before the bridge was worth $1.6 million after the bridge was built, and he profited.”
Schweizer explained how Reid’s sons’ lobbying careers benefits from the late senator’s political powers.
He stated, “The other part of [Reid’s] machine was his family — a big family — his sons Rory, Key, and Joshua were all lobbyists while he was a senator. His son-in-law, a guy named Steve Barringer, was also a lobbyist, and if you wanted anything done in Nevada — anything frankly, done in Washington, DC, — you were expected to hire one of his kids to effectively lobby his office. This was a very aggressive enterprise that was very profitable for the family.”
Reid evaded disclosure requirements for elected officials by enriching his children, Schweizer said. Reid “was very smart about setting up his kids,” he shared. “In other words, the flow of money from the interest was not directly to him in all these cases. A lot of times it would go to his kids, and the reason [is] you don’t have to disclose.”

Human rights advocates and attorneys representing Guantánamo Bay detainees on Thursday decried a secret new courtroom reportedly being built by the Pentagon at the notorious offshore US prison.
The New York Times reports Gitmo’s new second courtroom – which will cost $4 million – will not allow members of the public to witness proceedings against detainees to be tried for alleged terrorism-related offenses. People wishing to view those trials will have the option of watching delayed video footage in a separate building.
“I’ve observed trial proceedings in person at Guantánamo. The chipper ‘secrecy’ imposed by the military is insulting, anti-democratic, and cowardly,” said Michael Bronner, producer of the 2021 film The Mauritanian, which portrays Gitmo detainee Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s 14-year fight for freedom. “The entire enterprise makes a mockery out of what the US pretends to stand for.”
The Times calls the second court “the latest retreat from transparency in the already secretive national security cases at the base, where the military and intelligence agencies have been restricting what the public can see.”
The paper says that the new court “appears to be tailor-made for the conspiracy murder trial of three men who were recently charged in two terrorist bombings in Indonesia in 2002 and 2003 that killed more than 200 people.”
Pentagon officials said the new courtroom – which is being built in the United States for assembly at Gitmo by 2023 – will enable prosecutors to hold two simultaneous trials. Camp Justice, Guantánamo’s court compound, consists of prefabricated structures and tents in order to circumvent the congressional approval needed for permanent buildings. The current main courtroom permits observers to watch live proceedings with a 40-second audio delay that allows judges or security officers to censor information they believe is classified.
“I’ve observed trials in Mongolia that were more transparent than this,” James R. Hodes, an attorney representing detainee Encep Nurjaman – also known as Hambali – in the Indonesian bombing case, told the Times.

Israeli Prime Minister says he’s not opposed to ‘good’ nuke deal with Iran as talks resume
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has said he is not opposed to a “good” nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, although he expressed skepticism that the talks that resumed this week can result in such an outcome.
“At the end of the day, of course there can be a good deal,” Bennett told Israeli Army Radio on December 28. “Is that, at the moment, under the current dynamic, expected to happen? No, because a much harder stance is needed.”
Israel is not a party to the talks and opposed the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers that curbed Iran’s controversial nuclear program, saying it was not tough enough.
In the past, Israel has accused its archenemy Iran of using “nuclear blackmail” as a bargaining chip that allowed it to inch closer to developing a nuclear weapon.
The eighth round of negotiations aimed at reviving the deal, which stalled after the United States withdrew from the accord in 2018, opened in Vienna on December 27.
Iran, which claims its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only, reacted to the U.S. withdrawal by gradually ramping up its nuclear program and enriching uranium well beyond the thresholds allowed in the original agreement.
Tehran has said that the current negotiations should focus on lifting sanctions on the Islamic republic and obtaining “guarantees” that Washington, which is participating the talks indirectly, will return to the accord.
“The most important issue for us is to reach a point where, firstly, Iranian oil can be sold easily and without hindrance,” Iranian media quoted Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian as saying in Tehran before negotiations resumed this week.
The 2015 agreement limited Iran’s nuclear program in return for sanctions relief, but sanctions were reimposed after the United States backed out of the deal under former President Donald Trump.
Diplomats from the parties that remained party to the deal — China, Britain, France, Germany, and Russia — are directly taking part in the efforts to restart the accord.
The seventh round of talks, the first under new hard-line Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, ended on December 17 after Tehran added some new demands to a working text, including that U.S. sanctions be lifted.
Diplomats from the three European countries directly involved in the negotiations said after that round ended that negotiators were “rapidly reaching the end of the road.” They have expressed frustration with Tehran’s new demands in recent weeks but pointed to “some technical progress.”
Russia’s envoy in the talks, Mikhail Ulyanov, said on December 28 that the working group was making “indisputable progress.”
“Sanctions lifting is being actively discussed in informal settings,” he wrote on Twitter.
U.S. national-security adviser Jake Sullivan said last week that current diplomatic efforts aimed at reviving the deal may be exhausted within “weeks,” while U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley warned of a “period of escalating crisis” if diplomacy failed to restore the agreement

The goal of the Cultural Heritage year is to "popularize folk art, preserve cultural traditions, historical and cultural monuments, ethnocultural diversity, cultural identity of all peoples and ethnic communities of the Russian Federation," the document says.
The Russian government is to form an organizing committee and to approve the plan of the main events within the two months.

Navy removes two top commanders citing 'loss of confidence in their ability to command'
Cmdr. Richard J. Zamberlan, the ship’s skipper, and Cmdr. Phillip Lundberg, the vessel's executive officer, were relieved of their command.
The Navy has made the rare decision to remove two high-ranking officers from their posts – commanders of the littoral combat ship Montgomery – citing a "loss of confidence in their ability to command."
The announcement Thursday by the military service provided no specific information about why Cmdr. Richard J. Zamberlan, the ship's skipper, and Cmdr. Phillip Lundberg, the vessel's executive officer, were relieved of their command.
However, two Navy officials told The New York Times, on the condition of anonymity, that Lundberg and Zamberlan's removal resulted from their handling of a sexual harassment investigation.
They will be reassigned to desk jobs at the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet's Naval Surface Force.
Cmdr. Dustin Lonero, from the littoral combat ship Coronado, will be the Montgomery's acting skipper until a permanent replacement is named, Capt. Marc Crawford, commander of the Navy's Surface Division Eleven, said in the announcement.
While such firings or demotions are unusual, they are not unprecedented, especially recently.
The Navy in April removed Cmdr. Kathryn Dawley as the skipper of the guided-missile destroyer Hopper for what officials said was a poor command climate and bad crew morale, The Times also reports.

FDA says PCR tests for COVID are 'gold standard' after CDC admits they catch old infections
Questions about the sensitivities of PCR tests have lingered since summer 2020, but FDA stands behind them as the best detection tool for COVID-19.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky's recent admission that common tests for COVID-19 can detect long-gone infections has some calling into question the Food and Drug Administration's claim that the tests represent the "gold standard" for diagnosing coronavirus.
The CDC's new caution also falls in line with reports going back 16 months about widespread false positives among the so-called PCR tests, particularly when labs run them at high "cycle thresholds," which pick up viral loads that may be dead or too small to transmit.
The CDC's decision Monday to halve the recommended "isolation" time for asymptomatic COVID-19 infections amid the Omicron wave, regardless of whether individuals test negative, prompted consternation in some medical circles.
The agency justified the new 5-day isolation by claiming "the majority of SARS-CoV-2 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after."
But Walensky also emphasized that neither rapid antigen tests, which are currently in short supply, nor PCR tests were appropriate for determining if a person can safely leave isolation.
She told CBS Mornings that antigen tests may not be sensitive enough to detect infectiousness, while PCR tests are so sensitive that "it can stay positive for up to 12 weeks, for months and months." People would have to stay isolated "for a very long time if we were relying on PCRs," she told Good Morning America.
The significance of Walensky's declaration, which has sweeping implications for COVID policy in the workplace, school and travel settings, went largely unnoticed except among skeptics of COVID policy.
"Think of all the lives ruined, jobs lost, education squandered b/c of false positives," tweeted Justin Hart, chief data analyst for the COVID contrarian website Rational Ground.
"We've been saying since summer 2020 that the PCR test can be positive at 5 days or 75 days. And ONLY JUST NOW is it being used to adjust policy," he said. Neither Rational Ground nor Hart responded when asked to provide his sources.

Antifa Rioter, Arrested Three Times for Assaulting Police, Has Case Dismissed
An Antifa rioter in Portland who was arrested three separate times for assaulting police officers during riots had his charges dismissed “with prejudice,” meaning no charges connected with the crime will ever be brought against him.
Eva Warner of Beaverton, Oregon, who police said was also known as Joshua Warner, was arrested three times in August 2020 and released without bail. He had been accused of shining a laser into the eyes of police — an extraordinarily dangerous assault given the potential for blindness.

Portland Police said Warner directed a high-powered laser into the eyes of law enforcement officers trying to disperse the crowd. Warner resisted arrest, prompting officers to use force, the DOJ said. A laser pointer was found on Warner.
Warner was booked into custody and charged with intentionally obstructing, impeding, interfering with law enforcement officers engaged in official duties but later released without bail.
About a week later, Warner was arrested again and charged with second-degree criminal mischief in connection with another riot. Warner was again released from custody without bail.
On September 2, Warner was arrested in a southeast Portland apartment as part of a federal investigation. He appeared in court before a U.S. magistrate judge the next day and was later released pending further court proceedings.
Warner was looking at five years in prison if convicted. Instead, the prosecutor never brought the case to trial, and Warner had his case dismissed by Scott Erik Asphaug, acting U.S. attorney for the District of Oregon on December 21.
The motion noted that the defendant had performed “at least 30 hours of community service.”
The next day, U.S. District Court Judge Michael H. Simon dismissed Warner’s indictment “with prejudice,” according to court documents obtained by Fox News.
Fox News has reached out to Acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon Thomas S. Ratcliffe as well as the Portland Police Association. Warner’s attorney was not available for comment.
Just to contrast the treatment of Warner with the legal jeopardy of J6 rioters, earlier in December, one January 6 rioter charged with assaulting a police officer found himself looking at the next five years behind bars for his crime.

Robert Palmer, 54, of Largo, Florida, wept as he told U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan that he recently watched a video of his actions that day and could not believe what he was seeing.
“Your honor. I’m really really ashamed of what I did,” he said through tears.
Palmer was one of several rioters sentenced on Friday in District of Columbia court for their actions that day, when the angry mob descended to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory following a rally by then-President Donald Trump. Scores of police were beaten and bloodied, five people died and there was about $1.5 million in damage done to the U.S. Capitol.
Maybe if Palmer had performed community service, he might have avoided jail time — except it’s very difficult to perform community service from a jail cell.
The message is being sent loud and clear: No one cares in Portland if you try to blind a police officer during a riot ostensibly about “police brutality.” As long as you express the proper political sentiment with your actions, you can get away with just about anything.
In truth, both Palmer and Warner should serve time in jail. That Mr. Warner finds himself a free man today is a disgusting miscarriage of justice.

CDC Now Treats Unvaccinated The Same As Un-Boosted, Just As DeSantis Predicted
In its recently updated guidance on exposure to COVID-19, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) treats double jabbed individuals that have not received a booster shot the same as unvaccinated ones.
“For people who are unvaccinated or are more than six months out from their second mRNA dose (or more than 2 months after the J&J vaccine) and not yet boosted, CDC now recommends quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days,” the updated guidance reads. “Alternatively, if a 5-day quarantine is not feasible, it is imperative that an exposed person wear a well-fitting mask at all times when around others for 10 days after exposure. Individuals who have received their booster shot do not need to quarantine following an exposure, but should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure.”
The move to change the definition of “fully vaccinated” by the federal health agency was predicted by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last month. During a press conference in Tallahassee, the Republican governor told attendees that “those individuals who have gone through a normal vaccination series for COVID …will be determined to be unvaccinated very soon.”
“They will do that – they are gonna tell you: ‘you’re unvaccinated and you have to get a booster,'” he said, adding that those who choose not to get a booster “could potentially face loss of employment or other types of penalties.”
The comments sparked outcry from legacy media fact-checkers, who were quick to label the governor’s prediction as false. Writing in The Independent, Andrew Feinberg penned an article titled “Fact Check: DeSantis falsely claims vaccinated citizens without boosters could be declared unvaccinated and lose their jobs,” in which he claims that DeSantis was “lying about the possibility that Covid-19 boosters will be used to force people out of their jobs.”
“Centers for Disease Control Director Rochelle Walensky has repeatedly denied that the Biden administration plans to consider people who do not get boosters to be unvaccinated.” he wrote.
In addition to the recently updated guidelines, government health officials have also publicly indicated that such a change in definition would ultimately occur. During a CNN interview earlier this month, White House chief medical advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci foreshadowed that changing the definition of fully vaccinated to include booster shots is a matter of “when, not if.”
“I don’t see that changing tomorrow or next week, but certainly if you want to talk about what optimal protection is, I don’t think anybody would argue that optimal protection is going to be with a third shot,” he said. “For me, as a public health person, I just say get your third shot – forget about what the definition is. I just want to see people be optimally protected.”

Helicopter crash leaves 1 dead, 3 hurt northwest of Houston
LIVINGSTON, Texas (AP) — One person is dead and three more are injured after a helicopter crashed northwest of Houston on Thursday, according to state and federal authorities.
A Bell 206B helicopter with four people on board crashed in a field in Livingston, Texas, about 70 miles northwest of Houston, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.
It's unclear what led to the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board will lead the investigation and provide updates, according to the FAA statement. The NTSB confirmed Thursday that it has opened an investigation and sent an investigator to the crash site but provided no other details.
The Texas Department of Public Safety said the crash happened about 11:45 a.m.
Daniel King, 54, of Livingston, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to DPS.
Braydon King, 26, and Brocton King, 23, both of Livingston, were both taken to a Houston hospital, DPS said. The pilot John Martin, 73, of Montgomery, also was taken to a Houston hospital, DPS said.
Their conditions were not immediately available.

BOSTON — Basketball Hall of Famer Sam Jones, the Boston Celtics’ “Mr. Clutch” whose sharp shooting fueled the league’s longest dynasty and earned him 10 NBA titles — second only to teammate Bill Russell — has died, the team said. He was 88.
Jones died Thursday night in Florida, where he had been hospitalized in failing health, Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said.
“Sam Jones was one of the most talented, versatile, and clutch shooters for the most successful and dominant teams in NBA history,” the team said in a statement.
“His scoring ability was so prolific, and his form so pure, that he earned the simple nickname, ‘The Shooter,’” the Celtics said. “The Jones family is in our thoughts as we mourn his loss and fondly remember the life and career of one of the greatest champions in American sports.”
The Celtics honored Jones with a moment of silence before Friday afternoon’s game against the Phoenix Suns, showing a video tribute on the screen hanging among the championship banners above the parquet floor at the TD Garden. His No. 24, which was retired by the Celtics in 1969 while he was a still an active player, was also displayed on the monitor in the hushed arena before a still photo of him in a suit and the words “Sam Jones 1933-2021.”
“Another one of my dear friends lost,” Celtics broadcaster Cedric Maxwell wrote on Twitter. “Well, the banks are open in heaven this #NYE.”
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Jones will be remembered as “one of the most prolific champions in all of professional sports.”
“His selfless style, clutch performances and signature bank shot were hallmarks of an incredible career,” Silver said. “Sam was a beloved teammate and respected competitor who played the game with dignity and class. We mourn the passing of a basketball giant and send our deepest condolences to Sam’s family and the Celtics organization.”
Celtics coach Red Auerbach discovered Jones when he went to North Carolina to scout the national champion Tar Heels for the upcoming draft. Auerbach said he was told that the best player in the state was actually on Hall of Fame coach John McLendon’s team at North Carolina Central.
Auerbach selected Jones in the first round of the 1957 draft, eighth overall, despite never seeing him play.
Jones went on to average 17.7 points and just under five rebounds in 12 years with the Celtics, leading the team in scoring five times — including the 1963 champions, who had eight Hall of Famers on the roster.
Jones was even better in the playoffs, averaging 18.9 points per game in the postseason. When he retired in 1969 at the age of 36, he was the only player in Celtics history to score more than 50 points in a game.
“You look at the championships and what he did, it’s obviously a big loss for the community here,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said before Friday’s game.
Using a bank shot that was unconventional even then, Jones came to be known as “Mr. Clutch” after a series of game-winners, including a buzzer-beater to clinch the 1962 Eastern Conference finals. He hit an off-balance, wrong-footed jumper to win Game 4 of the ‘69 Finals; instead of heading to Los Angeles trailing 3-1, the Celtics tied the series against the Lakers at two games apiece and went on to win in seven.
Jones retired after that title, having won his 10 championships in 12 seasons. A five-time All-Star, he was was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984.
Jones was named to the NBA’s 25th, 50th and 75th anniversary teams. His death comes a year after teammate Tommy Heinsohn and 13 months following the death of K.C. Jones.

Denis O’Dell, a British film producer and director who worked with The Beatles on the movie A Hard Day’s Night and other productions, has died at his home in Spain, his son said Friday. He was 98.
Arran O’Dell told The Associated Press that his father died overnight at his house in Almería, in southeast Spain. He said the family planned a local private service and a memorial service at a later date in the United Kingdom.
Denis O’Dell was an associate producer of A Hard Day’s Night, the Fab Four’s first film, and How I Won the War, in which John Lennon appeared as a supporting actor.
He produced the 1967 Beatles film Magical Mystery Tour, as well as The Magic Christian, which featured Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr.
O’Dell’s memoir of his time with the Fab Four came out in 2003 and was called At the Apple’s Core: The Beatles from the Inside.
O’Dell became a director of The Beatles’ new organization, Apple Corps, and the head of Apple Films.

White Rabbits
The rabbits are part of an art installation called “Intrude.” The largest is the “Mama” or “Bunzilla” and also called “Intrude XXL.”
The Parer Studio created them as an opportunity to juxtapose the rabbit’s fairytale-like innocence with the great destruction and imbalance they are causing in Australia.
It took about 40 minutes to inflate the largest one. They will on display through Jan. 28 — the day of the cultural trust’s Winter Gallery Crawl.
The rabbits will be deflated nightly and reinflated in the morning to protect them.
This is not the first time Pittsburgh has been home to a large inflatable. The Steel City welcomed a 40-foot rubber duck to the rivers near Point State Park in 2013 and the 92-foot-tall Vincent van Gogh floating head balloon in Schenley Park earlier this month.
Aziz said people will be able to get close to the rabbits, touch them and take photos with them.

Ex Worcester councillor and mayor Aubrey Tarbuck dies
A former mayor of Worcester has died, the city council has said.
Aubrey Tarbuck, 89, was first elected as a city councillor for Nunnery ward in 1966 and was the city's mayor from 2005 to 2006.
Mr Tarbuck, of Hallow, in Worcestershire, had previously been charged over a crash which caused the death of his wife Anne in 2017.
The council's current leader Marc Bayliss said thoughts were with his family and friends.
The authority said Mr Tarbuck had grown up in Worcester and attended the Royal Grammar School.
He later worked in Worcestershire County Council's audit department, as a senior officer at Lloyd's bank and at firm GR Pratley & Sons.
After losing his Nunnery seat in 1971, Mr Tarbuck rejoined the council in 1998 after being elected to St Peter's ward, the authority said.
'Very conscientious'
He was also a Malvern Hills district councillor for a number of years, it added.
Worcester City Council said he had been reunited with former colleagues from the authority at an event held at the Guildhall on 2 October, to mark the 400th anniversary of the signing of Worcester's city charter, which was attended by several former mayors
"I enjoyed working with Aubrey; he was very conscientious and his professional financial background helped to make him an asset to the many committees he served on," Mr Bayliss said.
"His ability to understand the complexities of projects, budgets and cash-flow added clarity in the run-up to several key decisions."
Mr Tarbuck had denied causing the death by dangerous driving of his wife Anne, who died when their Volvo was involved in a collision with another car on the A458 near The Plume Of Feathers Pub, at Harley, Shropshire, in October 2017.
A trial due to start in November 2019 had been delayed.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Philadelphia tourism official and LGBTQ advocate Jeff Guaracino, whose creative ad campaigns helped draw diverse groups of visitors to the city, has died at 48.
Guaracino, the chief executive officer of Visit Philadelphia, helped launch a series of catchy, bold tourism slogans such as “Philly’s more fun when you sleep over.”
He died Tuesday of cancer, the agency said in a press release.
Guaracino authored two books on gay travel marketing. In a 2018 interview with Philadelphia magazine, he said that a 2003 campaign aimed at the gay community — featuring the slogan “Get your history straight and your nightlife gay” — had been a risk, but a calculated one.
“Philadelphia was already gay-friendly,” he said. “Philadelphia’s had a reputation since its very beginning that all are welcome.”
Mayor Jim Kenney, in a statement Wednesday, said Guaracino left an “indelible mark” on Philadelphia.
“A fierce champion and promoter of his hometown, Jeff was also a proud advocate for the LGBTQ community. With his trademark energy, charismatic charm, and never-ending wit, he helped make Philadelphia the welcoming city and destination that it proudly is today,” Kenney said.
Guaracino had led the tourism agency since 2018, having previously worked on its communications team and led Wawa Welcome America Inc., which runs the city’s Fourth of July celebrations. He also led Atlantic City Alliance after Superstorm Sandy hit the New Jersey coast in 2012.

Former WA Supreme Court Justice Mary Fairhurst dies at 64
OLYMPIA (AP) — Former Washington Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Fairhurst, who had been fighting cancer, has died. She was 64.
In a statement Washington Courts said Fairhurst died Tuesday surrounded by her family in Olympia. In January of 2020 she retired due to health reasons.
“Chief Justice Fairhurst was an inspiration to everyone. She was always positive yet with both feet on the ground,” Chief Justice Steven González said in a statement. “We are grateful for her leadership and for the time she shared so generously with all of us and send our condolences to her entire family.”
Fairhurst was first diagnosed with colon cancer in late 2008 and it later spread to a lung. After a final treatment in 2011 and several years of no evidence of disease, Fairhurst said that the cancer returned in 2018 — appearing in her lungs, liver, thyroid and spleen. She had continued to work while undergoing chemotherapy before opting to step down.
She was first elected to the court in 2002, and was elected chief justice by her colleagues in 2016.
In 2018, when the high court unanimously struck down the state’s death penalty as arbitrary and racially biased, Fairhurst wrote the lead opinion.
Fairhurst was a magna cum laude graduate of Gonzaga Law School and the youngest president of the Washington State Bar Association.
“I am deeply saddened about the loss of Justice Mary Fairhurst,” Gov. Jay Inslee said in a statement Wednesday. “She was a talented legal mind, a wonderful, thoughtful person and a dedicated public servant. Mary was deeply committed to her community and was always trying to find ways to support those most in need.”
When Fairhurst decided to step down she emailed colleagues and said the decision to retire was difficult.
“Everything is a miracle. Every day is a miracle,” she wrote. “Let’s not waste the days we have.”

An assistant headteacher who groomed pupils and had sex with them in his office has been banned from the classroom for life.
Teaching watchdogs said PE teacher Sean Aldridge, now 39, had shown no remorse for targeting four girls aged 13 to 16.
He was jailed for 12 years in July 2019 at Portsmouth Crown Court.
He has now been struck off for life by the Teaching Regulation Agency watchdog over multiple offences while teaching at Warblington School, Havant.
Peter Ward, who chaired the disciplinary hearing, said: 'The panel was satisfied that the conduct of Mr Aldridge was wholly contrary to the standards expected of the teaching profession.
'Teachers are placed in a privileged position of trust and Mr Aldridge had abused his position.
'Mr Aldridge's conduct was of the most serious and gravest kind.
'Mr Aldridge's actions in committing the offences had undoubtedly caused significant hurt and suffering to pupils who had been placed in his care.
'The panel considered that Mr Aldridge's behaviour in committing the offences would affect public confidence in the teaching profession.
'Further, that public confidence in the profession would be severely damaged in the event he was allowed to teach following his release from prison.
'In the light of the panel's findings against Mr Aldridge which involved 25 counts of sexual activity with pupils, there was a very strong public interest consideration in respect of the protection of pupils given the serious and multiple findings of sexual activity with pupils.

Actor Betty White did not tweet in support of Sesame Street’s ‘Big Bird’ after the Twitter account for the fictional children’s show character said he had been vaccinated. The fabricated tweet originated as satire.
The satirical tweet screenshot reads: “As someone who had a 20 year [sic] relationship with the PBS star playing Big Bird, he never gave two sh*** what anyone thought about his feathery a. #GoBiggie.”
Although some online users were aware the tweet was fabricated and satirical, others appeared to think it was genuine.
One Facebook user shared the fabricated tweet on Nov. 10 with the caption: “Betty White throwing down.” Another user said in the comments: “She is a treasure.” Another added: “You tell 'em, Betty!!” The post had gathered more than 1,000 likes and 165 shares by the time of publication ( here ).
Another Facebook user who shared the image said: “Betty White owning Ted Cruz over his complaint about the woke performance of Big Bird being vaccinated” ( here ).

The screenshot was shared by the Twitter account @FaithRubPol which clearly identifies itself as satirical. The description of the account reads: “If you like it, put a follow on it. Most of our screenshots are satire” ( twitter.com/FaithRubPol ).
The fabricated tweet was shared by the account on Nov. 9. Instead of the time of publication, which would be viewable at the bottom left of an authentic tweet, ‘Satire PM’ is viewable ( here ). ‘Faith Back Rub,’ the name of the satirical Twitter account, is also viewable on the bottom right corner.
The Twitter account for Big Bird tweeted on Nov. 6: “I got the COVID-19 vaccine today! My wing is feeling a little sore, but it'll give my body an extra protective boost that keeps me and others healthy. Ms. @EricaRHill even said I’ve been getting vaccines since I was a little bird. “Researchers from the COVID-19-linked Wuhan Institute of Virology and disgraced researcher Peter Daszak’s EcoHealth Alliance have carried out new research on “recombinant” coronaviruses in rodents, a recently published paper reveals. The paper lists the Chinese regime as well as Joe Biden’s International Development department as funders and supporters of the dangerous work.
The October document – “A Novel Potentially Recombinant Rodent Coronavirus with a Polybasic Cleavage Site in the Spike Protein” – describes how researchers sampled rodents and shrews collected from the wild for coronavirus prevalence. In the years preceding COVID-19, the Wuhan Institute of Virology carried out similar expeditions to gather data on bats.
Using the samples collected, researchers from the Wuhan lab in collaboration with the American non-profit EcoHealth Alliance discovered “killer” viruses that they bragged were capable of “direct human infection.”
The new paper, which counts researchers from seven Chinese state-run scientific institutions including one person affiliated with the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s Laboratory of Special Pathogens and Biosafety, is authored by three EcoHealth Alliance Researchers including President Peter Daszak. The National Pulse has previously revealed Daszak’s extensive relationship with the Chinese Communist Party, prompting his removal from the Lancet’s COVID-19 commission due to conflicts of interest.
“In this study, we tested nearly 300 rodents collected from urban and rural sites in southern China,” the paper summarizes its methodology which yielded the following results:
Here, we sampled 297 rodents and shrews, representing eight species, from three municipalities of southern China. We report coronavirus prevalences of 23.3% and 0.7% in Guangzhou and Guilin, respectively, with samples from urban areas having significantly higher coronavirus prevalences than those from rural areas. We obtained three coronavirus genome sequences from Rattus norvegicus, including a Betacoronavirus (rat coronavirus [RCoV] GCCDC3), an Alphacoronavirus (RCoV-GCCDC5), and a novel Betacoronavirus (RCoV-GCCDC4). Recombination analysis suggests that there was a potential recombination event involving RCoV-GCCDC4, murine hepatitis virus (MHV), and Longquan Rl rat coronavirus (LRLV).

Video footage has captured the moment a crowd harassed Queensland Police officers and forced them to leave a cafe during COVID-19 checks.
Three police officers attended the Vintage Apron at Capalaba when they were confronted by the crowd.
The officers had been called to the premises over reports of multiple COVID-19 health direction violations.
Video shared with 9News shows people chanting "leave the shop". The officers appear to be mobbed.
Despite the confrontation, the officers remained calm.
"The question I want to ask you, we're gonna have to put in a report why people aren't wearing masks here," one police officer can be heard saying.
Bystanders are heard replying "don't answer it".
"Hopefully everyone keeping a cool head, no one getting angry or worked up," a police officer said.
They continued to receive backlash from people within the cafe before they leave.

Australia is finally doing what we should have done 18 months ago – but thanks to lies from our politicians, the public is panicking, writes Joe Hildebrand.
Australia is trapped in a paralysis of cognitive dissonance. If our country was a person it would be borderline schizophrenic.
The symptoms were clear at the highest levels of government from the earliest days of the Covid-19 outbreak. National cabinet would meet, the Prime Minister and all the premiers would declare a common position of what they were doing and then the states would all go off and do something completely different.
National cabinet’s official position was that Australia would adopt a suppression strategy and then the states simply ignored it and pursued an elimination strategy.
National cabinet’s official advice was that schools were not a high-risk environment for Covid-19 but NSW, Victoria and Queensland simply closed them anyway.
National cabinet’s official plan was that Australia would reopen at 70 and 80 per cent vaccination rates but Western Australia simply decided to stay shut.
And all of this was justified with torturous weasel words that attempted to gaslight the public into believing that they were doing the opposite of what they were actually doing.
After the very first national cabinet meeting on March 15, 2020, Prime Minister Scott Morrison was unequivocal that the nation was pursuing suppression, not elimination:
“We know that the virus cannot be absolutely stopped. Of course not. No one can do that.”
But when it was clear the states were in fact going to attempt to do that the Prime Minister issued a statement a month later on April 16 that tried to pretend this had been the plan all along:
“National cabinet agreed that Australia will continue to progress a successful suppression/elimination strategy for the virus.”
And when this piece of Orwellian doublespeak was deemed plainly ridiculous the PM and premiers lit upon a more Yes Minister-esque solution in July. They simply changed the name of the elimination strategy and called it a “suppression strategy with the goal of no community transition”.
And in order to save face the PM once more pretended this was a reaffirmation of the strategy all along rather than concede that the premiers had abandoned the national plan:
“National cabinet recommitted to the suppression strategy for Covid-19, with the goal of no community transmission…”
Of course this is all pretty bog-standard political obfuscation so why does it matter now?
Well the problem with lies is that they always catch up with you and the problem with this one is that Australia — or at least the more sensible parts of it — is now finally actually doing what we were supposed to be doing more than a year-and-a-half ago.
The goal is now to simply to keep Covid numbers to a level that doesn’t overwhelm our hospital system, just as the original goal had been before it was hijacked by the states on the advice of more nervous epidemiologists.

Judges to unseal Epstein papers ahead of Prince Andrew’s case

New York: A 2009 settlement agreement between the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein and Virginia Giuffre, which bears directly on Giuffre’s civil lawsuit accusing Britain’s Prince Andrew of sexual abuse, will be made public early next week.
In a joint order on Wednesday (Tuesday AEDT), US District Judges Lewis Kaplan and Loretta Preska in Manhattan ordered the agreement’s release on or about January 3, 2022, finding no reason to keep it under seal.
Kaplan oversees Giuffre’s lawsuit accusing Andrew of forcing her to have sex more than two decades ago when she was under 18 at the London home of former Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell, and abusing her at two of Epstein’s homes.
“Prince Andrew forced Plaintiff, a child, to have sexual intercourse with Prince Andrew against her will,” according to the complaint by Giuffre, who was previously known as Virginia Roberts.
Andrew has strongly denied Giuffre’s claims.
Preska oversees Giuffre’s lawsuit accusing Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz of defaming her when he denied her claim that he was among the men Epstein compelled her to have sex with.
The prince’s lawyer, Andrew Brettler, has contended that the 2009 settlement with Epstein released the Duke of York from liability from Giuffre’s lawsuit because it covered “royalty”, and Epstein insisted it cover anyone Giuffre might sue.
Giuffre’s lawyer, David Boies, countered that the settlement applied “at most” to people involved in underlying litigation in Florida, where Epstein had a home, and that Andrew should not use it as a “get out of jail free card”.
Andrew has not been charged with crimes. Giuffre’s civil lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
Kaplan is scheduled to hear oral arguments on whether to dismiss Giuffre’s lawsuit against Andrew on January 4, 2022.
In a filing on Tuesday, Brettler called for the case to be halted or thrown out because Giuffre has long lived in Australia, depriving the Manhattan court of jurisdiction, and cannot support her claim that she is a Colorado resident.
Sigrid McCawley, another lawyer for Giuffre, in a statement called that argument “another in a series of tired attempts by Prince Andrew to duck and dodge the legal merits of the serious case Virginia Giuffre has brought”.
Epstein, a registered sex offender, killed himself in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Maxwell was found guilty by a US jury on Thursday (AEDT) of helping Epstein sexually abuse teenage girls.

Tennessee Planned Parenthood Building Completely Destroyed in Fire
A Planned Parenthood in Knoxville, Tennessee was completely destroyed by an early morning fire on Friday.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
“This is a huge loss for the community, and we hope that there are no resulting injuries or damage to neighboring properties,” Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and Mississippi president and CEO Ashley Coffield said. “We are fully cooperating with the authorities as they assess the cause of the fire.”
Knoxville News Sentinel reported:
Knoxville’s Planned Parenthood building was engulfed in flames early Friday morning and is a total loss.
Fire crews were called about 6:40 a.m. as heavy smoke was coming out of the back of the structure, Assistant Chief Brent Seymour said. There were no injuries to report. The building was being renovated and the clinic had not been used in some time.
Seymour said it’s too early in the investigation, with parts of the building unsafe to enter, to be able to say what caused the fire.
Representatives from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI have already made contact with local officials and will help if it’s deemed the fire’s origin is suspicious. Crews are currently working with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation

Colorado governor cuts 100 years off sentence for truck driver in fatal crash
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) on Thursday commuted the 110-year sentence of the truck driver involved in a crash that killed four people, calling the sentence that was handed down "highly atypical and unjust" and reducing it by 100 years.
In October, a jury found Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, 26, guilty on 27 counts relating to the incident in which his truck crashed into stopped traffic on I-70, killing four people and injuring at least 10 others. Aguilera-Mederos told the court that his brake had failed before the crash.
Aguilera-Mederos was sentenced to 110 years in prison due to mandatory minimum sentencing laws in Colorado. The sentence drew international outcry for its severity, with fellow truck drivers boycotting Colorado in protest.
As KDVR reported, Aguilera-Mederos applied for clemency from Polis, which the Colorado governor granted on Thursday, cutting his sentence down to 10 years.
"I believe you deserve clemency for several reasons," Polis wrote. "You were sentenced to 110 years in prison, effectively more than a life sentence, for a tragic but unintentional act. While you are not blameless, your sentence is disproportionate compared with many other inmates in our criminal justice system who committed intentional, premeditated, or violent crimes."
Polis stressed that the crimes Aguilera-Mederos was convicted of are "serious," but said he was "encouraged" by the "personal reflection" the defendant had done as well as "the commercial vehicle safety changes" that were made in light of the crash.
"While you have begun the process of taking accountability and recognizing the mistakes that led to this tragic event, I strongly encourage you to take additional responsibility for your actions by seeking restorative justice opportunities to address your obligations to those who suffered loss and to repair the needs of the community due to your carelessness," said Polis.

North Korea has previously said it favors an end of war declaration
On Wednesday, South Korean Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong said Seoul and Washington have “effectively” agreed on a draft declaration that would finally put an official end to the Korean War.
Chung said the US and South Korea have discussed “the importance of the declaration” and are now considering ways to start negotiations with North Korea on the matter. South Korean President Moon Jae-in ultimately favors reunification with the North and sees the end of war declaration as a vital first step.
“Our government views that an end-of-war declaration is a crucial step that we must go through in the process of achieving complete denuclearization and a lasting peace settlement on the Korean Peninsula,” Chung said.
While the fighting ended in 1953, a peace treaty was never signed to formally end the war. The US has been standing in the way of the declaration, as many hawks in Washington view the move as a “reward” for Pyongyang.
Since President Biden took office, peace talks between Pyongyang and Seoul have been stalled. “Our government views that an end-of-war declaration provides a very useful opportunity to resume dialogue in a current deadlock in talks with North Korea,” Chung said.
In September, Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kin Jong-un, released a statement speaking favorably of the idea of declaring an end to the war. “We have discussed the end of war declaration at several opportunities in the past since we have appreciated of the necessity and meaning of the [declaration], which can be the beginning of the establishment of a system to ensure peace on the Korean Peninsula,” she said.

If the past year has confirmed anything it is that the mainstream media is thoroughly dishonest. Yes, most people already suspected this, but the last 12 months have provided more confirmation than the past several years combined. 2021 has made it clear that the mainstream media is a propaganda arm of political and corporate elitists, from big government to big pharma.
While there have been a few shining examples of independent and mostly unbiased journalism in the MSM, these moments are as rare as Loch Ness Monster sightings and almost as unbelievable. The public has been lied to so consistently that sometimes we ignore legitimate journalism when it pops up because it’s safer to assume the media is disingenuous at all times.
I’ve personally noticed a wash of commercials lately paid for by major legacy media platforms like the New York Times desperately trying to convince the public that they are still relevant. The message is that they are the only “true source” of news information while they beg people to start subscribing and reading their hot garbage once again. Leftist media is crumbling, with online propaganda peddlers and click-bait prostitutes like Buzzfeed and Vox imploding. The lack of profits is obvious and the layoffs have been aggressive.
These platforms survived for the past few years on tech media hype and venture startup capital, but the free money has run out and now they don’t know what to do. Buzzfeed’s scheme was to go public and sell shares, but this plan failed so completely and the company’s stock plunged so hard that the event has exposed all other fledgling tech media to wider scrutiny. In other words no one has faith in these outlets, at least not enough to invest in them, and now the veil of their supposed “success” has been lifted. Buzzfeed used to claim they were worth $1.5 billion; reality revealed they are worth almost nothing.
Legacy media has also seen its audience numbers plummet over the past ten years, but the last year in particular has been especially unkind to them. ALL of the major corporate news channels saw their audience ratings decline, with CNN seeing the largest drop overall. CNN is facing an epic cut of 68% in its prime time numbers in 2021, while MSNBC now has the smallest prime time audience it has witnessed since 2016. Fox also dealt with audience declines this year but continues to remain the most watched cable news outlet so far, probably because of the continued popularity of commenters like Tucker Carlson.
Some might blame the loss of election coverage, but it’s not as if there hasn’t been enough news to hype in 2021. With millions of people still working from home and facing intermittent covid restrictions this year (in blue states), you would think that this would represent a captive audience for the fear machine. Hell, even YouTube and other social media platforms are forcing MSM content into our faces daily while burying any alternatives. Yet, their numbers are still plunging and audiences are laughing.
YouTube has even removed the “Dislike” button just to protect the corporate media and the White House from the hilarious bombardment of thumbs down they receive on every video. It’s unacceptable for us peasants to have the ability to voice our discontent.
