France: Holcim has issued a statement after another day of the on-going criminal court case against Lafarge Syria on charges of financing a terror organisation, violating an embargo, endangering its employees and being complicit in crimes against humanity. Aljazeera News has reported that the company stands accused of paying US$15.3m to armed groups including ISIS, to which it allegedly also supplied cement. Prior to the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War, Lafarge Syria had invested US$601m in its cement operations in the country. Holcim called the alleged crimes a ‘legacy issue’ for Lafarge Syria. Following the group’s discovery of the historic conduct in 2016, it engaged third-party investigators and shared their findings with the courts.
Chair Beat Hess said “All the alleged charges against Lafarge SA are in stark contrast with everything that Holcim stands for as a company. The described events concerning Lafarge SA were concealed from the Holcim Board at the time of the merger in 2015 and go completely against the values of our company.” He added “On behalf of the board of directors of Holcim, I would like to reiterate how extremely shocked and appalled we are by the alleged charges against Lafarge SA.”

French court blocks Lafarge’s appeal against charges of crimes against humanity
The Court of Cassation has denied Lafarge’s appeals against the charge of complicity in crimes against humanity in Syria. The court of last resort has reversed the decision by the Paris Court of Appeal in 2019, according to the Agence France Presse. The case has now been referred back to investigating magistrates for reconsideration along with another charge of ‘endangering the lives of others.’ In a statement Lafarge said that the decision by the Court of Cassation did not in any way presume any guilt on its part and that it would continue to cooperate fully.
The legal case relates to the conduct of Lafarge in Syria between 2011 and 2014. Lafarge and Holcim later merged in 2015 becoming LafargeHolcim. LafargeHolcim’s shareholders voted to change the company’s name to Holcim in May 2021.

The US Army has illegally occupied a cement plant to be used as an airfield in Syria's northeast.
Satellite visuals recently taken of the "Lafarge" cement factory in northern Al-Raqqa province, shows a US military base containing a helipad.
The pad can be used for multiple kinds of war crafts and assault helicopters.
According to deep research in the satellite images, the airbase contains: military transport aircraft "Boeing CH-4 Chinook", in addition to the transfer helicopters of "Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey" and assault aircraft "AH-64 Apache".
The proximity of this base to the frontlines with ISIS makes it an important asset to the fight against the terrorist group.
Lafarge was handed over to Kurdish authorities in early 2016.

UPMC officials said Friday they are losing staff to traveling nurse agencies which pay triple what nurses previously earned.
They have responded by creating an in-house traveling nurse agency which will pay nurses $85 an hour to travel among UPMC hospitals in Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland.
They said the move is critical to offsetting the nursing shortage which threatens hospitals’ ability to handle surging cases of COVID-19 and other illnesses.
“It’s a win-win for UPMC and for nurses who like to travel. It’s a way for us to keep our own nurses, to recruit new nurses to UPMC and to bring back nurses who have left the system,” said Holly Lorenz, UPMC’s chief nursing executive.
UPMC, as have many hospitals, said the biggest present obstacle to caring for patients isn’t shortages of beds or equipment like breathing ventilators, but of having enough people to staff the beds.
Their traveling agency will also include surgical technicians, who will earn $63 an hour.
UPMC plans to begin deploying the traveling staff on Jan. 2 and has a goal of recruiting 800 traveling nurses.
Officials acknowledged the UPMC agency will likely lure nurses from competing hospitals. However, John Galley, UPMC’s chief human resources officer, said he believes those nurses would leave to become traveling nurses regardless.
He said there are no immediate plans to hire out UPMC traveling nurses and technicians to non-UPMC hospitals, but UPMC “would be open to that” if it would meet another hospital’s need.

When Vicki Arnett’s husband Maurice was diagnosed with stage four colon cancer, traveling to Atlanta for treatment from their home in Pittsburgh was hardly her first choice. But the agreement between his local hospital and his health insurer was about to end. If they didn’t reach a new agreement, his care would be disrupted midstream.
The Arnetts were like thousands of patients caught in the crosshairs of an ongoing battle between UPMC, the dominant healthcare provider in the Pittsburgh area that has drawn criticism during the pandemic, and Highmark, a Blue Cross Blue Shield-affiliated health insurer dominant in the region.
A five-year agreement to work together was set to expire in 2019. As the deadline for a new agreement approached, patients insured by Highmark—many of whom had no other health insurance option—were at risk of losing access to their providers at UPMC.
The battle between the two nonprofit behemoths—and the impact on patients—is chronicled in a new documentary, InHospitable, that premiered in New York City earlier this month and is showing online at DOC NYC through November 28, 2021.
“We all know we have an incredibly broken system,” said Sandra Alvarez, the film’s director, in an interview. “You hear a lot about insurance, you hear a lot about pharma, you hear a lot about medical devices. But in the public consciousness, there’s not a lot of discussion about hospitals.”

After two years of bitter legal wrangling, Highmark and UPMC have signed a 10-year contract ending their longstanding battle and guaranteeing that Highmark customers will have access to UPMC doctors and facilities.
The contract will go into effect July 1, immediately after the expiration of the current consent decrees — meaning patients shouldn’t experience any disruption in their care.
Prior to this new agreement, 11 UPMC hospitals and the doctors affiliated with them were due to become out-of-network for Highmark members after June 30.
“This is a global deal” giving every Highmark customer access to UPMC doctors and facilities, Attorney General Josh Shapiro said at a press conference in Pittsburgh today. “It guarantees them access, and it guarantees it for a long time.”
Each side didn’t get everything they wanted, Shapiro said: “This is a deal that is fair to both sides. Most importantly, it’s fair to the consumers.”
“I’m proud to announce this historic settlement today that restores fairness and access to affordable care for the people of Western Pennsylvania and reinjects real choice into the healthcare marketplace,” said Shapiro. “Without this agreement, millions of patients — including seniors, cancer patients and working mothers — would have had their health care abruptly upended. Thanks to the patients who told their stories about what they stood to lose, Western Pennsylvanians now have their access to a fair healthcare system secured for the next decade.”
This decade-long agreement is the longest that UPMC has ever made with an insurer.
Though the deal was brokered between UPMC and Highmark, at today’s press conference Gov. Wolf credited Shapiro with pushing hard to make it happen. The related lawsuits that Shapiro had been pursuing, which focused on issues with the current consent decrees, will be withdrawn now that the new agreement is in place.
But while that legal battle is over, Shapiro said, “that doesn’t mean our oversight responsibilities will be withdrawn.”
“As Attorney General, I swore an oath of office to protect the rights of all Pennsylvanians,” Shapiro said. “That means putting people before powerful institutions, and holding powerful institutions accountable to the people they serve.”
This decisive resolution to the two-year legal battle between the healthcare giants and the state is a “big deal for all of us in Pennsylvania,” Wolf said, “especially a big deal for the folks living in Western Pennsylvania.”

Exclusive: NSA infiltrated RSA security more deeply than thought - study
Reuters reported in December that the NSA had paid RSA $10 million to make a now-discredited cryptography system the default in software used by a wide range of Internet and computer security programs. The system, called Dual Elliptic Curve, was a random number generator, but it had a deliberate flaw - or “back door” - that allowed the NSA to crack the encryption.
A group of professors from Johns Hopkins, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Illinois and elsewhere now say they have discovered that a second NSA tool exacerbated the RSA software’s vulnerability.
The professors found that the tool, known as the “Extended Random” extension for secure websites, could help crack a version of RSA’s Dual Elliptic Curve software tens of thousands of times faster, according to an advance copy of their research shared with Reuters.

Summary:
Bacteria can directly cause human blood and plasma to clot – a process previously thought to have been lost during vertebrate evolution. The discovery may lead to new clinical methods for treating serious medical conditions such as sepsis and anthrax. The key to clot formation is the location of the bacteria, rather than the total number of bacteria or their concentration. Coagulation occurs only when a cluster of bacteria forms.

It has long been known that blood often coagulates during sepsis or bacterial infections, but this has generally been regarded as a host's immune and inflammatory response. It also has been known that bacteria can activate factors that precede coagulation, but it had not previously been known that bacteria can pass the coagulation threshold and cause blood clots to form. Once they form, the clots can grow and propagate. Although this may help prevent the dissemination of the bacteria through the host, it often leads to serious vascular damage due to blocked and injured blood vessels.
The key to clot formation is the location of the bacteria, rather than the total number of bacteria or their level of concentration. In other words, for those bacteria that can activate coagulation factors, coagulation occurs only when a cluster of bacteria forms.
"Our research demonstrates that coagulation can be controlled by changing the spatial distribution, or clustering, of bacteria," said study co-author Christian Kastrup, Post-Doctoral Assistant at the Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "Therefore, considering the location of bacterial cells, instead of just their presence or absence and their total numbers, could significantly change our understanding of coagulation."
Kastrup, who worked on this research as a graduate student in the Ismagilov Lab at the University of Chicago's Department of Chemistry, is the first author of the Nature paper.
