Exclusive: Pandemic relief aid went to media that promoted COVID misinformation
Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, public health officials have warned about the dangers of a parallel “infodemic” — the spread of conspiracy theories, misinformation and disinformation about the virus.
Some of that misinformation, it seems, has been spread by media outlets that have benefited from the federal government’s COVID-19 relief program.
According to a joint analysis conducted by the counter-disinformation consulting firm Alethea Group and the nonprofit Global Disinformation Index, at least five companies behind some of the internet’s top sources of false, misleading or conspiratorial information related to COVID-19, including the Epoch Times, Newsmax and the Federalist, received sizable loans from the federal government as part of the Paycheck Protection Program.
“These outlets are getting money from the government in response to a pandemic that they are having an active role in prolonging,” said Danny Rogers, chief technology officer at GDI, which uses a combination of expert analysis and machine learning technology to track the spread of disinformation narratives online.
As part of a joint analysis with Alethea Group, which was reviewed exclusively by Yahoo News, GDI used this methodology to identify what it said are the top 100 websites that have published the most false, misleading or conspiratorial content about COVID-19 throughout the pandemic.
“We train machine-learning models on a few hundred expertly selected pieces of COVID disinformation from around the internet,” Rogers explained. “Then we have a data platform that crawls roughly 115,000 open web domains, and pulls in about a million pieces of content a day. Each of those pieces of content gets tested against this machine-learning model … and if the machine-learning model matches, says it’s similar enough, it gets flagged as a piece of coronavirus misinformation.” The top 100 list generated for this particular analysis ranks the websites in order of how often their content was flagged as coronavirus misinformation.
Using a searchable database created by ProPublica, that list was compared against publicly available information from the Small Business Administration on organizations that received PPP assistance in the form of forgivable loans to help businesses keep paying their workers.
“What we found is that some of the companies that took PPP loans from the federal government were publishing false or misleading information about the pandemic, thus profiting off the infodemic,” said Cindy Otis, a former CIA analyst who is now vice president of analysis at Alethea Group.

The latest suspicious death to occur days (or, in some cases, even hours) after a patient received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine has surfaced in Portugal, where a pediatric surgery assistant in Porto (who was reportedly in "perfect health" when she received her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine) has died suddenly.
Health authorities are investigating the death. Meanwhile, scientists from around the world continue to criticize the European Union for its comparatively sluggish vaccine rollout, which only began on an emergency basis little more than one week ago.
The patient was identified on Monday as Sonia Azevedo, 41, a mother of two who worked as a surgical assistant at the Instituto Portugues de Oncologia, a cancer hospital in Porto. She was among the 538 healthcare workers at IPO who received their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine last Wednesday. Azevedo had dinner with her family on New Year’s Eve, but was found dead in her bed the following morning.

After Obama Judge Tried To Take Down Michael Flynn – Senator Cotton Just Called For Sullivan’s Impeachment

When new evidence emerged the Michael Flynn had been set up, the DOJ tried to drop the case. But we all watched in shock as an Obama-appointed judge, Emmett Sullivan, refused to end the trial.
He blocked the Feds from ending the case—and made unprecedented moves in the apparent hope to still prosecute and punish Flynn.
Trump ended the charade recently by pardoning Flynn, forcing the case to eventually be dropped by the court.
Now, a top Republican senator is calling for major consequences for what this judge did.

Judge Sullivan should be impeached for gross abuse of power.
Judge Sullivan on #Flynn’s case just granted a lineup of requests to file friend-of-the-court briefs in the wake of Trump granting a pardon to the former national security adviser.
Normally, when the people prosecuting drop the charges, a judge has no choice but to end the trial. After all, the people accusing the defendant have essentially given up.
For what reason does a judge have to prolong this process? It makes the judge appear biased as if he wants to do the job of a prosecutor.
Even after President Trump pardoned Flynn with his lawful executive authority, Judge Sullivan tried to drag out the process with more “friend-of-the-court” antics.
Now, two times, Flynn has been vindicated. There is no reason anyone in the court should be dragging this out.
Yet Sullivan appears to have had a personal vendetta against Flynn. Or he is openly revealing his political bias, trying to hurt a man Democrats largely despise (especially those from the Obama administration).
What else can we conclude but that this judge is abusing his power? It’s not the job of a judge to prosecute people. They are simply tasked with upholding the law and overseeing trials.
Tom Cotton’s comments might sound extreme, but so have been Sullivan’s actions. Even a liberal judge should have dropped the case by now.
It’s rare for a judge to be impeached. But if Cotton’s comments gain traction, this Texas-based judge might be forced to answer for his actions.

"When we start early voting today, we have every belief that we're going to see a turnout that is unlike anything Georgia has seen," former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, director of the voting rights organization Fair Fight, said on Dec. 14. "We have the investment. We have the momentum."
According to Georgia Votes, a website that compiles official Georgia state voting statistics, 3,041,581 Georgians have voted to date in the runoff election, compared to 3,936,215 in the general election.
The total number of ballots cast at this point is higher than the 2008 runoff election turnout in Georgia but it lags behind the 2020 general election. In the 2008 runoff, about 2.1 million Georgians cast ballots.
The breakdown of the 3 million ballots cast so far is 966,702 mail-in ballots and 2,074,879 in-person early votes.
Republicans are hoping for high in-person turnout on Tuesday as their party's control of the Senate hangs in the balance.
While President Trump continues to criticize state Republicans over their handling of Georgia's 2020 general election contest, Abrams said on Sunday that the "mission" of her group is to increase turnout among Democrats who want more than a $600 stimulus check to help them get through the pandemic.
Georgia Democratic State Rep. Vernon Jones, who endorsed Trump last year, told Just the News on Monday that the early voting turnout is historically high for a runoff election, but Republicans "normally want their voters to come out on Election Day."
"I have not seen a big effort from Republicans to push early voting again this year," he said. "I have seen them push, though, to get out and come back for this runoff."
"I can tell you Georgia is still a red state regardless of what happened," Jones added, referring to the November election results. "Georgia is not a blue state. It's still very much red. The numbers are there, but if they don't come out, they [Republicans] could lose this election. I hope and I believe they will turnout."
Incumbent Republican Sen. David Perdue and Democrat Jon Ossoff, the head of an investigative television production company, will face off in Tuesday's runoff election. Incumbent Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler and Democrat Rev. Raphael Warnock are also on the ballot on Tuesday.

Ex-chairman of China Huarong Asset Management sentenced to death
BEIJING (Reuters) -The former chairman of China Huarong Asset Management Co has been sentenced to death, a court in the northern city of Tianjin said on Tuesday, in one of the country's highest profile corruption cases.
Lai Xiaomin was convicted of receiving or seeking bribes totalling 1.788 billion yuan ($276.72 million) from 2008 to 2018, when he was also a senior banking regulator, according to the Secondary Intermediate People's Court of Tianjin.
Lai, who was expelled from the ruling Communist Party in 2018, was also convicted on a charge of bigamy.
Reuters was unable to contact Lai or his lawyer for comment.
"Lai Xiaomin was lawless and extremely greedy," the court statement said.
Huarong said its Communist Party committee supports the verdict.
"The severe treatment of Lai Xiaomin reflects the strong determination of the Central Committee with President Xi Jinping as the core to administer the party and its zero tolerance in punishing corruption," the company said in a statement.
The court noted that most of the activity in question took place after the 18th Party Congress in late 2012, referring to an event that sparked a sweeping anti-corruption campaign by soon-to-be President Xi Jinping that became a hallmark of his first term.
"The social harm was huge and the crimes were extremely serious and he should be severely punished according to law," the court said.

In an interview with The Epoch Times’ “American Thought Leaders” program, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo elucidated on the Trump administration’s efforts to reconnect modern America to its founding origins based on God-given rights and described the present administration’s foreign policy of keeping America safe from the worldwide threat of communism.
At the outset of the interview, host Jan Jekielek asked Pompeo why it took so long for the United States to sanction the Chinese Communist Party for gross human rights violations against practitioners of the meditation group Falun Gong.
“You go back all the way to Tiananmen Square. We’ve known the nature of this regime, and frankly, freedom-loving people across the world who have known the nature of authoritarian regimes throughout history. And yet we ignored it,” Pompeo answered.
Pompeo explained that the reason for the disregard of the CCP’s (Chinese Communist Party) grave human rights violations was a great extent due to the existence of a belief that if the United States engaged in fair and reciprocal trade and engagement, the situation would ameliorate, however, reality showed that the idea was clearly “false all the way through.”
