Member States Agree to EU Level Anti-Money Laundering Authority
The EU received approval from finance ministers of its member states on Wednesday to set up an anti-money laundering watchdog with the authority to directly interfere with national jurisdictions if it finds that they have failed to comply.
The agreed upon measures will serve as a basis for a more detailed set of legal proposals that will go into effect in the first quarter of 2021, and received praise as an important first step in the cross border that will be required to prevent future money laundering scandals from occurring within the EU.
“Dirty money is highly mobile, and this makes it a complex challenge to deal with,” said the Commission’s Executive Vice President, Valdis Drombrovskis, who explained that in order to tackle issues of money laundering, it must be addressed “consistently at the EU level.”
Olaf Scholz, Germany’s Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance, echoed this point, saying that “more harmonized rules and EU-level supervision will allow us to be more effective and to strengthen the EU's anti-money laundering framework.”
He added that recent alleged money laundering cases in the EU “underline the urgency to act,” and that it “is an important step” that all member state finance ministers “stand united for tough anti-money laundering measures.”
The EU has been plagued by several high-profile money laundering scandals that fall outside of the jurisdiction of just one country, such as the one orchestrated by Danske Bank, which saw €230 billion (US$271.5bn) in suspicious transactions flow through its Estonia branch to numerous jurisdictions both inside and outside of the EU.
The new EU proposal lays the groundwork for it to potentially have more supranational authority in scandals of this magnitude, along with in cases of countries that have consistently failed to comply with its anti money laundering directives.
In addition to harmonizing EU anti-money laundering rules in order to promote more “directly applicable regulation,” the European Council suggested this in saying that it “supports setting up an EU-level supervisor with direct supervisory powers over a selected number of high-risk obliged entities, as well as the authority to take over supervision from a national supervisor in clearly defined and exceptional situations.”
Paul Massaro, a policy advisor at the Washington D.C.-based Helsinki commission described this initiative on Twitter on Thursday as an anti-money laundering “cop”, and said that its support by EU ministers is a “potential big step forward depending on final legislation.”
“Much will hinge on proposed authority to take over supervision from national supervisors in certain situations,” he wrote.

As the twentieth century came to a close, a brave new world of election rigging emerged, and two major events paved the way: the mass adoption of computerized voting technology, and the outsourcing of our elections to a handful of corporations that operate in the shadows, with little oversight or accountability.
This privatization of our elections has occurred without public knowledge or consent, leading to one of the most dangerous and least understood crises in the history of American democracy: We have actually lost the ability to verify election results.
Old-school ballot-box fraud at its most egregious was localized and limited in scope. But new electronic voting systems allow insiders to rig elections on a statewide or even national scale. And whereas once you could catch guilty parties in the act, even dredge ballot boxes out of the bayou, the virtual vote count can be manipulated in total secrecy.
By means of proprietary, corporate-owned software, just one programmer could steal hundreds, thousands, potentially millions of votes with the stroke of a key. It’s the electoral equivalent of a drone strike.
No matter how cynical we may have become about our elections, doing nothing to secure an accurate vote count is not an option. It may be too late to completely prevent vote rigging in the 2012 election. But the spotlight of increased public scrutiny may deter the most brazen acts of fraud—and perhaps dissuade those who believe that shifting votes by minuscule percentages in the electronic dark will go unseen.
Where paper ballots still exist, we can demand that local election clerks allow them to be counted by hand before they leave the precinct. Organizing citizen volunteer groups to count them may be necessary. Sheila Parks, who founded the Center for Hand-Counted Paper Ballots, has also urged citizens with legal standing to file injunctions to impound ballots, memory cards, and even voting machines after the polls close. “This prevents tampering with any of these items after an election,” she told me, “and gives us access to them with a secure chain of custody.”
Staring at the outside of a black-box voting system and attempting to detect fraud, however, will not ultimately produce clean elections. It is an exercise in futility if we do not take the next steps now. In preparation for the 2014 election, we must demand that our representatives pass comprehensive election reform, including publicly financed races and a secure, transparent vote count.
A privatized, secret ballot count must be viewed as a violation of our civil rights. Once that principle is clear, as it is now in Germany and Ireland, the rest will naturally follow. If we the people do not feel the outrage, or lack the courage to fight for this most basic right of American self-governance, who will?

Three private companies, Election Systems & Software (“ES&S”), Dominion Voting Systems (“Dominion”) and Hart InterCivic (“Hart”) manufacture and manage the vast majority of U.S. electronic voting machines, controlling 84.08 percent of total eligible voter population. ES&S is the largest vendor, holding 37.97 percent of the market share by precinct and servicing more than 90.31 million registered voters. Followed by Dominion who controls 35.14 percent by precinct and Hart with 10.97 percent by precinct.

DA Drops Charges On Ten Portland Rioters, Including Two Unlawfully Carrying Firearms
Officers and deputies from the ballyhooed Unified Command arrested twelve particular individuals associated with post election night riots in Portland. The terrorists weren’t concerned so much with the Presidential election, but rather vichy “mayor” Ted Wheeler’s reelection.
From the official Multnomah County Sheriff’s press release:
Shortly after, a group of about 100 people began walking from the Skidmore Fountain through Downtown Portland, along West Burnside Street, breaking out windows as they moved. As police responded and ordered people to leave, individuals continued leaving a trail of damage. The ongoing criminal activity by such a large group of people created a significant risk to public safety. Unified Command declared the gathering a riot and gave repeated loudspeaker announcements that the crowd was directed to stop their criminal activity and leave. Those announcements were repeated at least five times over loudspeakers near the crowd.
People began throwing projectiles, including a firework, at police officers; (this was initially reported as a Molotov cocktail. After further investigation, it was determined to be a firework). Individuals broke out dozens of windows to businesses and damaged other private property downtown. Police officers identified the suspect who threw the firework and sheriff’s deputies arrested him nearby. The man is identified as William K. Beecher, 23, was armed with a loaded rifle and was in possession of several loaded magazines, a knife and other fireworks (photos). Beecher was also wearing a ballistics vest.
In the interest of public safety, Governor Kate Brown, under advice of the Unified Command, activated the use of the Oregon National Guard to assist officers in responding to acts of violence, and to maintain public order and ensure community safety.
An hour later, about 100 people left and began walking north. Police responded to prevent the group from reaching W. Burnside Street where they had damaged property earlier in the evening. Police provided announcements over a loudspeaker that the group was not to cross W. Burnside Street and that people who engage in criminal acts are subject to arrest and/or the use of force including munitions and CS gas.

President Donald Trump’s Director of Election Day Operations shared an alarming video on Friday of Philadelphia “volunteers” handling absentee ballots in the basement of the counting center.
When confronted about their bizarre actions, the woman claimed that she is “just a volunteer” and does not know the name of her supervisor.
The woman refused to explain what they were doing in the basement with the ballots or why their supervisor was not present.
Trump’s campaign has sued Philadelphia County’s Board of Elections after election officials were “intentionally refusing to allow any representatives and poll watchers for President Trump and the Republican Party.” The campaign is also challenging a ruling in Pennsylvania that would allow votes received up to three days after the election to be counted.
