Ørsted Cancels Maryland Power Agreement as it Reviews US Offshore Wind Plan

Ørsted is continuing with its efforts to realign its U.S. offshore wind portfolio while also taking steps to emphasize that it remains committed to the market and sees future opportunities. The U.S. division of the Danish offshore developer however announced that it has walked away from existing power agreements in New York and now Maryland positioning the projects for future offtake opportunities.

Plans for Skipjack Wind, a two-phase project with the potential for 966 MW of energy, were setback as the company reported it will withdraw from existing power agreements with the Maryland Public Service Commission agreed to in 2020 and 2021. The company said it determined that the payment amounts outlined in the orders “are no longer commercially viable,” while again citing market conditions, including inflation, high interest rates, and supply chain constraints.

According to Ørsted, the decision to withdraw from the orders with Maryland will “reposition Skipjack Wind for future offtake opportunities.” It is unclear then they might be able to rebid these projects.

Unlike its decision in November 2023 to end two New Jersey offshore wind projects, Ørsted intends to continue advancing development and permitting for the two phases of Skipjack. The company is submitting an updated Construction and Operations Plan for the wind farms to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for review.

The plan calls for Maryland’s first offshore wind farm to be built in two phases. The smaller, first phase was agreed upon in 2020 and would be located in an area approximately 13 to 21 miles off the Delmarva Peninsula. It would have a capacity for 120 MW while the second phase which was part of Maryland’s second solicitation in 2021 would have a capacity for 846 MW. The company in its plans said the project would require 69 turbine positions. They were planning on using the GE Haliade 14.7 MW turbine at the second site and the smaller 12 MW at the first site. They would stand approximately 550 feet from the waterline to the nacelle hub and the blades are approximately 300 feet in length.

“Today’s announcement affirms our commitment to developing value-creating projects and represents an opportunity to reposition Skipjack Wind, located in a strategically valuable federal lease area and with a state that is highly supportive of offshore wind, for future offtake opportunities,” said David Hardy, Group Executive Vice President and CEO Americas at Ørsted. “As we explore the best path forward for Skipjack Wind, we anticipate several opportunities and will evaluate each as it becomes available. We will continue to advance Skipjack Wind’s development milestones, including its Construction and Operations Plan.”

At the same time, they confirmed that yesterday they entered a new bid into the New York State solicitation for the Sunrise Wind project to be located east of Long Island. Ørsted had reported if the rebid is successful, it would take full control of the project acquiring the half interest currently held by Eversource.

The companies emphasized that Sunrise Wind is the most developed proposal in New York’s pipeline and if they are successful in resetting the power agreement would be ready to move forward with construction on the project which would provide 924 MW. Calling it “ready to build,” they said Sunrise Wind is expected to be completed in 2026.

The rebid however is just one of several proposals submitted to New York yesterday with expectations that it would be a very competitive round. BP and Equinor reported yesterday that they were separating their interests in Beacon Wind and Empire Wind, two other projects in New York that are looking to reset their offtake agreements. Equinor confirmed it had submitted a proposal for Empire Wind 1 in the solicitation.

RWE and National Grid Ventures also reported that their joint venture Community Offshore Wind had submitted a proposal. It is for the second phase of the wind farm which would have a capacity of 1.3 GW. The first phase was selected in the previous third round solicitation. Combined the project has the potential for 3 GW the companies said is expected to be in operation by the end of 2030.

New York has promised a quick decision as it looks to expedite the next round of offshore wind power development.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday he is willing to send members of the Florida State Guard to Texas to assist with Gov. Greg Abbott's declared invasion of illegal immigrants from Mexico.

DeSantis, among 25 Republican governors who said Thursday they're backing Abbott's right under the Constitution to defend Texas' sovereignty, said the State Guard might be a better option than the Florida National Guard because it could not be federalized by President Joe Biden.

"We may do more National Guard, but we may be willing to do the Florida State Guard," DeSantis, who exited the GOP presidential primary race following the Jan. 14 Iowa caucuses, said during a news conference in Kissimmee, Florida. "The president would not be able to federalize the State Guard.

"If we need to stand up and ensure the sovereignty of the country, then we need to do that. So, they can count on me to help from the state of Florida."

Florida lawmakers are working on legislation to remove a requirement the Florida State Guard be used exclusively within the state. Nearly every state has laws authorizing State Guards, and 21 states and Puerto Rico have active units, according to the National Guard Magazine.

The Biden administration has been trying to undermine Texas' methods for deterring illegal immigrants from crossing into the state from Mexico. The Supreme Court ruled Monday that Customs and Border Patrol agents can cut down razor wire installed by the Texas National Guard along the Rio Grande River that separates the U.S. from Mexico.

Yet, Abbott is having more razor wire installed amid calls from Democrats for Biden to federalize the Texas National Guard.

"What's happening in Texas is not just a Texas issue. It's an American issue," DeSantis said. "We've had over 8 million people pour into this country illegally just in the last three years. You've got people from China. You've got people from Iran and other parts of the Middle East, North Africa, Russia. This is not just people coming from Mexico.

"Anyone that wants to do us harm will look at that border as the easiest, soft underbelly this country has right now. If the federal government is saying that it is not only not going to enforce the law but it's going to somehow prohibit a state from faithfully enforcing the law, that is not the way this Constitution was designed.

"The states being able to step up to ensure the sovereignty of their territory and the sovereignty of our country is something that's appropriate and something that the Founders envisioned if you had a derelict executive in the federal government."

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis informed House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on Friday that she will not turn over the records he sought from a special prosecutor working in her office, with whom she also allegedly had an affair, citing "confidentiality interests."

In a letter, Willis said Jordan's request to attorney Nathan Wade for records earlier this month violated "principles of separation of powers" and a "respect for the legal protections provided to attorney work."

Jordan sent a letter to Wade on Jan. 12 after a bombshell accusation made by co-defendant Michael Roman in the Georgia case Willis is prosecuting that she and Wade were having an affair, which should result in his case being dismissed.

Jordan and House Republicans became interested when invoices filed by Wade to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office (FCDAO) surfaced showing meetings with the White House that ostensibly involved the case against former President Donald Trump for election interference. Jordan sent the letter to inquire about the potential of "politically motivated investigations and the potential misuse of federal funds."

Wade "forwarded your letter to me as District Attorney for response," Willis wrote.

"Your letter is simply a restatement of demands that you have made in past correspondence for access to evidence in a pending Georgia criminal prosecution," Willis wrote in Friday's letter. "As I said previously, your requests implicate significant, well-recognized confidentiality interests related to an ongoing criminal matter. Your requests violate principles of separation of powers and federalism, as well as respect for the legal protections provided to attorney work product in ongoing litigation."

Jordan in his letter asked Wade for "all invoices, including credit card statements and individualized reimbursement requests, submitted by you or your law partners to the Fulton County District Attorney's Office relating to its investigation of President Trump," and "all contracts and financial arrangements between you and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office relating to its investigation of President Trump."

Wade, who has reportedly been paid at least $654,000 in legal fees by the FCDAO, reportedly purchased airline tickets for himself and Willis to travel together on trips to San Francisco, Miami, and the Caribbean, while they were investigating Trump.

Willis and Wade, among others, are likely to be subpoenaed for a Feb. 15 hearing over their relationship before Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, who will decide whether Willis should be removed from the case.

A State Defense Force (SDF) is a state militia under the command of the chief executive of that state only. Twenty-five states in America have some kind of SDF, and all states have laws allowing one. Whether they call it state guards, state military reserves, or state militias, they are not a part of the National Guard of that state and only partially regulated by the federal government and cannot come under federal control.

Title 32 U.S. Code § 109 subsection (c) provides for these SDFs.

In addition to its National Guard, if any, a State, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia, Guam, or the Virgin Islands may, as provided by its laws, organize and maintain defense forces. A defense force established under this section may be used within the jurisdiction concerned, as its chief executive (or commanding general in the case of the District of Columbia) considers necessary, but it may not be called, ordered, or drafted into the armed forces.

During World War I, Congress authorized states to create Home Guards as reserve forces aside from the American Expeditionary Forces in Europe. During WWII, the 1916 legislation was amended to allow state militaries to defend their own states. Now called State Guards, they were trained and equipped by the federal government but maintained their separation. It wasn't until 1956 that Congress allowed for the continual existence of these units outside of a wartime role. For a time, these SDFs existed only on paper. During the Reagan Administration, that changed. Reagans Department of Defense wanted SDFs in all states.

The last part of the legislation says an SDF cannot be drafted into the Armed Forces of the United States, but that same legislation says that an individual member can. This is to ensure the independence of the SDF from the state National Guard. While typically organized as Army units, the SDFs vary, with some akin to the Navy and Air Force.

Before rushing to join your state's SDF, be advised there are a lot of controversies surrounding SDFs. In the late 1980's, the governor of Utah had to fire 31 officers for creating an SDF full of neo-nazis, mental patients, and felons. After September 11, 2001, Alaska disbanded its SDF because their lack of actual military training was more of a liability. New York's SDF was full of Generals who have never had any military training, they were appointed by the governor as a reward for support. Some SDFs have no fitness or weight standards (California) while others are highly restrictive (Tennessee requires its SDF members be honorably discharged from the U.S. military).

State Defense Forces have assisted in many disaster-related capacities, however. They augmented forces in support of Hurricane Katrina relief, especially in states surrounding Louisiana, to assist with the expected influx of refugees. In Texas, the SDF responds to local emergencies (like flash floods) that aren't declared disaster areas but need help anyway. They provide security augmentees for regular military forces and provide emergency medical training to National Guard units and other areas of the U.S. military.

The state SDF could be a good way for a military veteran to continue serving their country while providing those without that experience their much-needed expertise. Every state has a different enlistment process and requirements, so there isn't a single portal to joining, but be sure to do the research on the training and operations for your home state before applying.

The Russian president claims that the governments of Ukraine and the Baltic states have adopted “Hitlerites’ ideology and methods”

Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed to crush modern-day forces that promote Nazism, singling out Ukraine and the Baltic states as countries where the authorities have embraced such ideologies.

Speaking on Saturday at the opening of a memorial to Soviet civilians killed by Nazi German forces in Leningrad Region, the Russian head of state said: “these days the outcomes of the Nuremberg trials are effectively being revised.” He claimed that some countries have gone from rewriting history and whitewashing the Nazis to “arming themselves with Hitlerites’ ideology and methods.”

President Putin cited the Baltic states, in an apparent reference to their treatment of Russian-speaking minorities, which Moscow deems discriminatory.

“The regime in Kiev lionizes Hitlers’ accomplices, SS members, and uses terror against” those who resist it, the Russian leader alleged, accusing the Ukrainian authorities of subjecting the elderly, women and children to “barbaric shelling.”

According to President Putin, “in a number of European countries, Russophobia is being promoted as the state policy.”

“We will do everything – everything to undercut and eradicate Nazism for good,” the Russian head of state pledged.

He went on to predict that modern-day proponents of the Nazi ideology are doomed.

Putin noted that January 27 marks 80 years since the Soviet Army broke the Nazi Siege of Leningrad, which began in September 1941 and claimed the lives of more than a million civilians.

President Putin’s own parents lived through the ordeal. Indeed, his older brother succumbed to diphtheria at the age of two in the besieged city.

He noted that Nazi Germany was conducting a genocide of the Soviet population, leaving a deep scar on all generations since, with memories never fading away over the past eight decades.

In his New Year’s address to Russians, former President Dmitry Medvedev said that the “ultimate defeat” of neo-Fascism, an ideology “Russia’s enemies are trying to rekindle”should be the country’s “main goal” in 2024.

Earlier in December, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told AFP that Moscow “will not allow the existence on our borders of an aggressive Nazi state.”

She added that the goal of “denazification” of Ukraine proclaimed by President Putin back in February 2022 remain unchanged.

Biden Admin to Sell F-16 Fighter Jets to Turkey After Sweden NATO Membership Approval

The Biden administration has approved the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey following the Turkish government’s ratification this week of Sweden’s membership in NATO. The move is a significant development in the expansion of the alliance, which has taken on additional importance since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The State Department notified Congress of its approval of the $23 billion F-16 sale to Turkey, along with a companion $8.6 billion sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to Greece, late Friday. The move came just hours after Turkey deposited its “instrument of ratification” for Sweden´s accession to NATO with Washington, which is the repository for alliance documents and after several key members of Congress lifted their objection

The sale to Turkey includes 40 new F-16s and equipment to modernize 79 of its existing F-16 fleet. The sale to Greece includes 40 F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighters and related equipment.

NATO ally Turkey has long sought to upgrade its F-16 fleet and had made its ratification of Sweden’s membership contingent on the approval of the sale of the new planes. The Biden administration had supported the sale, but several lawmakers had expressed objections due to human rights concerns.

Those objections, including from the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sens. Ben Cardin, D-Md., and Jim Risch, R-Idaho, have now been overcome, officials said.

Cardin said in statement Friday that he had still had concerns about Turkey’s rights record, but had agreed to the sale based on commitments Turkey has made to improve it. “I look forward to beginning this new chapter in our relationship with Turkey, expanding the NATO alliance, and working with our global allies in standing up to ongoing Russian aggression against its peaceful neighbors,” he said.

Turkey had delayed its approval of Sweden’s NATO membership for more than a year, ostensibly because it believed Sweden did not take Turkey’s national security concerns seriously enough, including its fight against Kurdish militants and other groups that Ankara considers to be security threats.

The delays had frustrated the U.S, and other NATO allies, almost all of whom had been swift to accept both Sweden and Finland into the alliance after the Nordic states dropped their longstanding military neutrality following Russia´s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Sweden’s formal accession to NATO now depends on Hungary, which is the last remaining NATO ally not to have approved its membership. US and NATO officials have said they expect Hungary to act quickly, especially after Turkey’s decision.

The United Kingdom, Italy, Finland, Canada, and Australia have all announced that they will suspend funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) over allegations that staff actively participated in the October 7th Hamas terror attacks on Israel.

On Friday, UNWRA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini that his agency has fired several staff members after receiving Israeli intelligence claiming that at least 12 UNWRA staff members participated in the Hamas terror attacks on Israel that saw the Palestinian Islamists butcher at least 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and kidnap over 250 more, some of whom remain in captivity to this day.

Following the revelations from Lazzarini, the Biden administration announced that it would suspend its funding towards the organisation.

BRITISH MILITARY SAYS ANOTHER MERCHANT VESSEL WAS STRUCK NEAR YEMEN

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a detachment of the Royal Navy, reported on January 27 that a merchant vessel was struck by a missile some 60 nautical miles to the southeast of the port city of Aden in southern Yemen.

The strike resulted in a fire that was extinguished by the vessel’s crew, the UKMTO said in an advisory note, adding that U.S.-led coalition are responding to the incident.

Less than 24 hours earlier, a missile launched from Yemen by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) struck a tanker, the M/V Marlin Luanda, in the Gulf of Aden. The Iranian-backed group alleged that the tanker was British and said that the attack was a response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

The UK condemned the attack on the M/V Marlin Luanda and vowed to respond. Later U.S. strike hit what the Central Command said was anti-ship missiles set up by the Houthis. The strikes targeted the coastal area of Ras Issa in the western Yemeni port city al-Hudaydah, which is held by the group.

The Houthis have targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated vessels and others owned by the U.S. and the UK since November 19 in response to the ongoing Israeli war and siege on Gaza, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 26,000 Palestinains.

The U.S. and the UK retaliated to the Houthis’ recent attacks by carrying out dozens of strikes on military targets on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in recent weeks. However, the group remains undeterred.

50 on terror watchlist caught amid Biden border invasion

CBP had over 634,066 total encounters with illegal immigrants in the first quarter...

On Friday, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) revealed its agents encountered 50 people who appeared on the terror watchlist attempting to cross the border into the US illegally so far in 2024.

According to its website, CBP encountered 49 personnel with records in the Terrorist Screening Dataset coming across the southern border and one attempting to cross the northern.

This follows a record number of 172 members of the terrorist watch list being apprehended trying to cross the border illegally in 2023, almost doubling the 98 in 2022. Before then apprehensions of those on the terror watchlist were in the single digits for data going back to 2017.

CBP had over 634,066 total encounters with illegal immigrants trying to cross into the US during the first quarter, which is more than the total number for 2020.

Earlier this month, an illegal immigrant threatened a citizen journalist who was reporting at the border. He told the videographer, "Soon, you're gonna know who I am" after being asked where he was from

"If you are smart enough you will know who I am. But you really aren't smart enough to know who I am. But soon you're gonna know who I am. Very soon," the man said.

In October, when the Biden administration revealed the worst all-time numbers for border crossings, Donald Trump Jr. pointed out that the numbers reveal how many terrorists were caught, and noted, "Imagine how many got through?"

Since the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas, Republicans have asked the administration what it was doing to protect the border from terrorists coming across our borders illegally.

In a letter to Department of Homeland Security head Alejandro Mayorkas, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said, "I write with alarm regarding the uptick in potential terrorist-linked illegal aliens encountered at the southern border." he continued. "This development follows the barbaric attack perpetrated by Hamas terrorists on innocent American and Israeli civilians."

He said it was "imperative that [he] address this issue immediately to ensure the safety of American citizens, especially Jewish Americans, who are facing increased threats to their physical safety following the Hamas attack."

I know at first blush a lot of this CBDC discussion seems esoteric, difficult to understand, and there are a lot of other issues happening simultaneously in the background. However, if you contemplate the biggest threat on this overarching power arc of western government, you arrive to understand how serious this seemingly opaque issue really is.

I first started to deep dive research into these CBDC datapoints when the Russian sanctions were triggered. You see, nothing about them really makes sense from the way they were structured; additionally, the intensity of the drive to make the sanctions the tip of the western spear was just too pointed, something about it didn’t make sense. That’s what took me to dig deep into the impact and realize nothing said about these financial sanctions makes sense when compared against their actual irrelevance {Go Deep}.

When the White House first started openly saying the Biden administration was reviewing how to implement CBDC’s, yes THAT Announcement ACTUALLY HAPPENED, September 2022, then things from a research perspective really started to get serious. “While the U.S. has not yet decided whether it will pursue a CBDC, the U.S. has been closely examining the implications of, and options for, issuing a CBDC.” Whenever the U.S. govt says they’re “undecided,” pay close attention.

First things first with the Western financial sanctions- specifically the SWIFT exchange. It is true you cannot use VISA, Mastercard or any mainstream Western financial tools to conduct business in Russia; however, the number of workarounds for this issue are numerous. One of those tools is the use of a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin; and within that reality, you find something very ominous about the USA motive against crypto…. Really long article

Dimon was/is positioning JPMorgan to be a facilitating beneficiary of the financial control system evident within any CBDC process.

Here’s how it really looks from the outside looking at the USA. The same way thePatriot Act was not designed to stop terrorism but rather to create a domestic surveillance system. So too were the “Russian Sanctions” not designed to sanction Russia, but rather to create the financial control system that will lead to a USA digital currency.

The Western sanctions created a financial wall around the USA,not to keep Russia out, but to keep us in.The Western sanction regime, the financial mechanisms they created and authorized, creates the control gate that leads to a U.S. digital currency.

• The Patriot Act was never intended to stop foreign terrorists from attacking the USA. The Patriot Act was intended to create the DHS surveillance system for domestic control. It succeeded. The Russian sanctions were never intended to sanction Russia (and they don’t). The Western sanctions against Russia were intended to build walls around the U.S. financial system.

• Ostracizing the world’s global trade currency, the dollar, from the global trade system was/is a necessary step in controlling domestic currency. If there is a threat, the government needs to respond. That’s how the crisis is created and not wasted.

Yes, what I am saying is there was a longer anddeeper play afoot, a ‘trillions at stake’ gameby those who control money and power, using foreign threat as the justification for something that just would not be possible without it. That’s why Trump was never allowed to breathe for a moment, whenever Russia or Vladimir Putin was mentioned. The control forces needed Trump to be adversarial to Russia, regardless of whether the threat was real. After all, it was supposed to be a willfully blind Hillary Clinton in place during this phase.

• Conflict with Russia created the opportunity for the USA to create a sanctions regime that doesn’t truly sanction Russia, instead it controls the world of USA finance. At the end of that control mechanism is a digital dollar, a Central Bank Digital Currency…. and by extension full control over U.S. citizen activity. The Marxist holy grail.

That moment is closer than most can fathom, and that is exactly why the counterforce of a cryptocurrency, a rebellious mechanism for free people to exchange payment for goods and services, must be stopped by the same USG that is triggering the CBDC. Crypto is a threat. Jamie Dimon, along with all the major banks and financial institutions, is one key beneficiary that CBDC (a transactional player for fees therein) so long as JPMorgan stays on task.

‘No threat’ of Russia attacking NATO – Germany

The bloc nonetheless needs a Cold War-style deterrence against Moscow, defense minister Boris Pistorius has said

There’s currently no threat of Russia attacking NATO or any of the partners of the US-led military bloc, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has suggested.

Moscow’s military is now fully occupied with the Ukraine conflict, Pistorius explained, in an interview with the tabloid Bild on Friday.

”At the moment, I don’t see any danger of a Russian attack on NATO territory or on any NATO partner-country,” he added.

However, the minister stressed that this is just a “snapshot” of the current situation and there’s no way of knowing how things would turn out in the future.

Pistorius warned against underestimating the alleged risks related to Russia, saying that NATO needs to rely on “the principle of deterrence, as we know it from the times of the Cold War.” During that time, things between the West and Moscow were “much more predictable than the situation we have today,”he argued.

”We are coming out of 30 years of peace… from which we have all benefited. And now the journey is going the other way,” the minister said. NATO and Germany must “really pick up the pace” in order to be able to face the emerging challenges, he stressed.

Germany has given to Ukraine “a lot of systems” that Berlin needed for itself since the outbreak in February 2022 of fighting between Moscow and Kiev, but “we will get them again,” Pistorius vowed.

Earlier this week, commenting on the possibility of a direct conflict between NATO and Russia, the bloc’s Secretary General JensStoltenberg said that “we don’t see any direct or imminent threat against any NATO ally.” He stressed, however, that NATO “closely monitors what Russia does” and has increased its “vigilance and presence in the eastern part of the alliance” in order to be able to counter any moves by Moscow.

Pistorius told ZDF on Monday that Germany should be ready to respond to a possible Russian attack. In order to be able to resist an aggression “that you don’t know if and when it will occur, then that means you have to arm yourself – and that’s what we’re currently doing together with allies in NATO,” he explained.

On Tuesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed Pistorius’ speculation about a possible conflict between Russia and NATO, saying that, due to internal problems the EU faces, itspoliticians “now need to somehow pump up public opinion, artificially agitate it, by inventing an external enemy.” (Thats true)

Speaking at UN headquarters in New York the following day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that “no one wants a big war,”especially Moscow. “We have lived through ‘big wars’ many times in our history,” he added.

President Vladimir Putin last month rejected as “complete nonsense” claims that Russia could attack NATO. Moscow has “no geopolitical, economic… or military interest” in doing so, he pointed out. Russia is, on the contrary, interested in developing ties with the bloc, he said.

For months, the Texas National Guard was engaged in an armed standoff with federal law enforcement, as well as active duty service members, at the Rio Grande: Guardsmen used razor wire to fence off the border, preventing federal access to migrants, even those in severe medical distress. On Monday, by a 5–4 vote, the Supreme Court lifted an injunction that prevented federal officers from cutting through this razor wire. But Abbott says his state will “defend and protect itself” by continued use of force, raising the very real possibility of ongoing clashes between state and federal law enforcement. Whether these disputes turn violent is anyone’s guess. The belligerent governor, though, has conspicuously declined to rule out use of force against anyone who stands in his way.

Vicious nativism is certainly not a perfect comparison to the totalitarian white supremacy that drove the slave states to Civil War, but it, too, springs from the diseased roots of bigotry, fear, and rage. It should be no surprise, then, that Abbott and his allies would adopt Confederate rhetoric in his quest to seize control over the border and subject migrants to anguish and death. By embracing the Confederate theory of the nation as a mere compact, he has freed himself to take even more aggressive measures against the federal government. We have been here before. It does not end well.

Experts from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US are warning that the country is close to a vaccination tipping point: a point where there aren't enough vaccinated people to protect the unvaccinated, leading to deaths that would otherwise have been prevented.

A new commentary, written by FDA Commissioner Robert Califf and FDA vaccine regulator Peter Marks, highlights COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus as three diseases where vaccinations are crucial in protecting communities.

Measles also gets a mention, with a record number of people no longer getting vaccinated against it. That has meant a number of recent outbreaks, including one in Ohio where 36 children had to be hospitalized because of complications from the measles infection.

"An increasing number of people in the US are now declining vaccination for a variety of reasons, ranging from safety concerns to religious beliefs," write the FDA experts.

"Population immunity against some vaccine-preventable infectious diseases is at risk, and thousands of excess deaths are likely to occur this season due to illnesses amenable to prevention or reduction in severity of illness with vaccines."

Marks and Califf point out just how much work and research goes into developing vaccines that are safe enough to be approved for use, and how that work continues while the vaccine is being distributed and administered, to make sure it stays effective.

They also suggest that higher socioeconomic populations are becoming complacent about the need for vaccinations – compared to poorer countries where vaccines simply aren't available, leading to thousands of deaths that could've been prevented.

Research shows that COVID-19 vaccinations have helped to prevent tens of millions of deaths, and many more hospitalizations, since the pandemic started. However, social media misinformation means many are opting out of more than just these vaccinations.

"Vaccines have been so successful in achieving their intended effects that many people no longer see the disturbing morbidity and mortality from infections amenable to vaccines," continues the commentary.

"For example, smallpox has been eradicated, and polio has been eliminated from the US, through effective vaccination campaigns."

The commentary calls on clinicians, pharmacists, and all healthcare professionals to continue the work of educating people about the benefits of vaccination, and the hospitalizations and deaths that will occur without it.

"We believe that the best way to counter the current large volume of vaccine misinformation is to dilute it with large amounts of truthful, accessible scientific evidence," write the authors of the commentary.

"We will do our part at FDA by continuing to provide health care clinicians and the general public with timely and accurate information in plain language to help explain the benefits and risks of vaccination."

While we're yet to see any widespread waves of illness caused by a lack of vaccinations, there's no doubt the risk of one is increasing. We don't want to find out what that would look like.

Among the associated comments on the published article, retired University of California Davis physician Stuart Stolp commends the authors' efforts while arguing that improved critical thinking skills are the only way to immunize the population from growing misinformation.

"To overcome the influence of such enormous volumes of faulty information with even larger volumes of accurate information is comparable to attempting to halt a pandemic by treating infected individuals rather than immunizing a population with an effective vaccine," Stolp says.

"The most effective way to counter a literally "infinite" number of mis- and disinformation messages is to preemptively build public health literacy in the population as an essential component of primary and secondary education."

This story has been listed in notables a couple of times recently. I am not quibbling with that. My interest is in the headline itself. Specifically "Biden’s new tribal consent laws". Further down in the story we find:

Court clerk locks down because mayor is wearing a holstered pistol, which he is doing lawfully.

This building houses the sheriff's department, district attorney's office and others. The court moved in but the building does not belong to the court, they were allowed to use it. The court decided to install a metal detector and not allow anyone inside with a weapon.

Comedy ensues. When they mayor called them on it and walked in with a holstered pistol, the court and security guard called a lockdown, called state police saying there was a man with a gun, and hid from the "threat". They never actually told anyone in the court though which was in session, or the sheriffs department a few feet away.

It’s unclear at this point exactly what motivated the shooter at city hall.

A video posted to YouTube the morning of the shooting, that has since been removed, showed Sarvar wearing a tactical-style vest and holding a large gun, speaking to the camera in a Persian language while smoking and sitting in a casual manner.

A second video showed Sarvar wearing a Commissionaire security jacket, as well as a blue shirt identical to what is seen in surveillance video of the shooter obtained by Global News.

In that video, which has also since been deleted from YouTube, Sarvar was sitting in a vehicle and talked about completing a mission and listed a wide range of concerns, including affordability, the housing crisis and immigration.

No mention of the specifics of this man’s videotaped manifesto, besides some vague mention of “affordability, the housing crisis and immigration”—as if he were just your run-of-the-mill, disgruntled anti-Trudeau Canadian.
