Police Arrest Teen Said to Be Linked to Hundreds of Swatting Attacks

A California teenager who allegedly used the handle Torswats to carry out a nationwide swatting campaign is being extradited to Florida to face felony charges, WIRED has learned.

For more than a year, the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation has been hunting the person whom experts say is one of the most prolific swatters in American history. Law enforcement now believes they have finally arrested the person responsible.

A 17-year-old from California is allegedly the swatter known as Torswats, according to sources familiar with the investigation. The teenager is currently in custody and awaiting extradition from California to Seminole County, Florida. The Florida State Attorney’s Office tells WIRED that he faces four felony counts.

Other messages Dennis shared with WIRED suggest thatthe FBI has known the identity of Torswats, whose swatting activities were first revealed by Motherboard last April,since at least July 2023, when the agency executed a search warrant and seized Torswats’ devices. The FBI’s Seattle field office, which oversaw the investigation into Torswats, declined WIRED’s request to comment.

In a significant drug enforcement action, San Diego Sector Border Patrol agents confiscated over 38 pounds of fentanyl, a highly potent synthetic opioid, during a routine vehicle stop on Interstate 5. The operation took place near the Vista Hermosa Highway exit on the afternoon of January 18.

The seizure occurred when San Clemente Border Patrol Station agents stopped a grey sedan traveling northbound on the interstate. A Border Patrol canine team performed an air sniff around the vehicle, leading to an alert for the possible presence of narcotics near the trunk. Upon further inspection, agents discovered the spare tire in the trunk was unusually heavy. The sedan and driver were then taken to the San Clemente Border Patrol Station for a detailed examination. Inside the spare tire, agents found 15 cellophane-wrapped packages containing blue pills, later identified as fentanyl.

Laboratory testing confirmed the substance as fentanyl, totaling more than 38 pounds with an estimated street value of approximately $1.72 million. The Drug Enforcement Administration notes that one kilogram of fentanyl can potentially kill half a million people, underscoring the danger of this seizure.

The driver was handed over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for federal prosecution, and the narcotics were confiscated. The U.S. Border Patrol seized the vehicle involved in the incident.

Chief Patrol Agent Patricia D. McGurk-Daniel emphasized the serious threat posed by fentanyl, even in small quantities, and reaffirmed the Border Patrol’s commitment to thwarting drug trafficking efforts and dismantling criminal organizations responsible for such activities.

This operation is part of the larger regional initiative, Operation Apollo, which involves federal, state, and local agencies collaborating to address the threat from fentanyl and other illegal narcotics.

Javier Milei's honeymoon is over.

Two months after libertarian firebrand Javier Milei was elected president of Latam basket case Argentina, pledging to overhaul the economy and openly warning a period of brutal austerity and pain is coming, the initial euphoria is fading fast and is being replace with the shock and horror of what comes next. And sure enough, in the biggest show of resistance to date against Milei, Argentinian workers on Wednesday took to the streets for a general strike, bringing swaths of downtown Buenos Aires to a standstill.

In what has been called an "unprecedented mobilization" never before in modern Argentinian history has a mass strike been called less than seven weeks into a new presidency. But leaders from Argentina’s largest labor union - the guys who are used to a steady drip of handouts from the government - said the nationwide protests reflect the urgency they feel as Milei pursues radical economic and political reforms he likens to “shock therapy”.

Thousands of (most labor union) protesters swarmed the square in front of Argentina’s Congress on Wednesday, denouncing Milei’s sweeping plans to overhaul the government, privatize public industries and slash spending. Some banged pots and carried signs accusing Milei of being a “traitor”. Other banners featured the portrait of working-class icon Evita Peron.

Elizabeth Gutierrez made her way to the gathering after working an overnight shift as a nurse. She explained she was motivated by steep increases in food prices since Milei took office.

“Before we used to have asados [barbecues] every Sunday. Not now. Even rice is very expensive,” Gutierrez said. “Rents have shot up. You can’t live off your salary any more: It’s not enough" she raged adding that “the people are here to defend their nation."

Well, here's the problem: the nation has been bled dry by corrupt politicians, and the only thing that can save it is the most aggressive belt tightening in decades. And while Milei is trying it, he is about to find out just how much pushback his plans will cause, and how impossible it will be for his ambitious plan seeking to end the government's parasistism of the economy, to succeed.

Another protester, 63-year-old retiree Alicia Pereyra, voiced opposition to Milei’s efforts to deregulate the economy, including plans to “modernise” labour law and ditch rent regulation. “He wants us to be slaves,” Pereyra said.

Two major exhibition halls and several other display cabinets at the American Museum of Natural History were empty and covered up on Friday morning as the museum shuttered all Native American-related displays to comply with new federal regulations, shocking new photos showed. The glass cabinets in the museum’s halls dedicated to the Eastern Woodlands and the Great Plains looked eerily abandoned, just hours after museum director Sean Decatur announced the changes in a letter to staff Friday morning. “The halls we are closing are artifacts of an era when museums such as ours did not respect the values, perspectives and indeed shared humanity of Indigenous peoples,”

A Republican National Committee member has withdrawn a draft resolution that would have declared former President Donald Trump the presumptive nominee in 2024 on Thursday following backlash and Trump’s own opposition. Maryland RNC Committeeman Dave Bossie withdrew his resolution to declare Trump presumptive nominee after his wins in Iowa and New Hampshire and dominance over former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley in polls of the remaining states, a source familiar confirmed to the Washington Examiner.

Civil rights organizations in Texas have filed a formal letter with the United Nations, raising the alarm on a "deteriorating human rights situation" for LGBTQ+ people in the state. Equality Texas, ACLU of Texas, GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, and the University of Texas at Austin School of Law Human Rights Clinic submitted the joint letter. In a press release, political advocacy organization Equality Texas said the letter, addressed to 17 experts, working groups, and special rapporteurs, is meant to illustrate the ways LGBTQ+ Texans are having their rights to non-discrimination, privacy, health, freedom of expression, and education violated.
