Veon added former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (pictured) to the board of its Ukrainian subsidiary Kyivstar, a move coming shortly after the company became embroiled in row about corporate rights in the country.

Pompeo was appointed as a non-executive director, with Veon CEO Kaan Terzioglu selected as chair of the Kyivstar board. Veon stated the appointments reflects its “commitment to Ukraine and to the recovery and reconstruction of the country”.

Pompeo served as the US Secretary of State from 2018 to 2021, during which he played a prominent role in the country’s long-running campaign to push allies to ban the use of Huawei 5G equipment. He is currently a partner atImpact Investments, a newly established US strategic and financial advisory, and investment company.Pompeo said it was through private enterprise and investments that Ukraine will secure its economic future.

Veon has pledged to invest $600 million in Ukraine over the next three years and sold its operation in Russia due to the ongoing war between the countries.However, it came under fire from the Security Services of Ukraine (SSU) last month, which froze Kyivstar’s corporate rights as part of measures to crack down on the interests of sanctioned individuals, including Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman. Fridman founded LetterOne Investment Holdings, which holds a 48 per cent stake in Veon. However, he is no longer on the board of either company. Veon subsequently filed legal motions challenging the freeze, emphasising corporate rights in the operator belong exclusively to it and Fridman owns none of its shares in Kyivstar.

Ex-CIA boss gets Ukrainian cellphone firm directorship

Mike Pompeo is taking a seat on the board of the Veon subsidiary Kievstar

Telecom giant Veon announced on Wednesday that it has appointed ex-CIA director and former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the board of directors of its Ukrainian subsidiary, Kievstar.

Pompeo is joining the Kiev-based operator as “an independent non-executive director,” in his capacity as a partner ofImpact Investments, described by Veon as “a newly established US-based strategic and financial advisory and investment firm.”

Kievstar’s new board chairman will be Kaan Terzioglu, the CEO of the Veon Group. The appointments reflect Veon’s “commitment to Ukraine and to the recovery and reconstruction of the country,” the company said.

Terzioglu said the company looks forward to the “knowledge and experience” that Pompeo will contribute to the phone company.

Pompeo has no telecommunications experience. He was a tank commander during his days in the US Army, ran Thayer Aerospace from 1996 to 2006, and served as a congressman from Kansas from 2011 to 2017, before running the CIA during the early days of Donald Trump’s presidency. He took over the State Department in 2018.

After Joe Biden took over the White House, Pompeo became an outspoken advocate of Washington’s military, economic, and political aid to Ukraine.

Veon started as a Russian-American joint venture called VimpelCom in the 1990s, before expanding internationally. It was renamed in 2017 and has a headquarters in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

As part of the Kievstar announcement, Veon also confirmed it had fully exited the Russian market, completing the sale of its Russian subsidiary last month.The transnational company currently operates in Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.

Veon has pledged to spend $600 million in Ukraine over the next three years and has launched the ‘Invest in Ukraine NOW!’ initiative, to invite other corporations to do the same.

The Los Angeles Times said it planned to lay off at least 115 employees — more than 20% of the newsroom — starting Tuesday, one of the largest staff cuts in the newspaper's 143-year history.

The announcement came after the LA Times Guild walked off the job last Friday to protest the imminent layoffs, the institution's first ever newsroom union work stoppage.

Matt Pearce, president of the Media Guild of the West, which encompasses the Times' union, called Tuesday a “dark day.” He said at least 94 union members would be let go.

“Many departments and clusters across the newsroom will be heavily hit,” Pearce said in a statement. “This total, while devastating, is nonetheless far lower than the number of layoffs the Bargaining Committee was expecting last week.”

He said some of those selected for layoffs by management may be eligible for buyouts under the union contract.

Senior editors, photographers and members of the video unit were also part of the purge, the Times said.

The cuts were necessary because the Times could no longer lose up to $40 million a year without boosting advertising and subscription revenue, the paper’s owner, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, said Tuesday.

“Today’s decision is painful for all, but it is imperative that we act urgently and take steps to build a sustainable and thriving paper for the next generation. We are committed to doing so,” Soon-Shiong said.

Layoffs and buyouts have hit a wide swath of the news industry over the past year. The Washington Post, NPR, CNN and Vox Media are among the many companies hit.

An estimated 2,681 news industry jobs were lost through the end of November, according to the employment firm of Challenger, Gray and Christmas. That was more than the full years of 2022 and 2021.

Mexico Calls For Probe Into Why Mexican Drug Cartels Are In Possession Of U.S. Military Grade Weapons

Mexico has requested a critical investigation into how United States military-grade ammunitions are quickly being discovered in the hands of Mexican drug cartels, according to Mexico’s highest diplomat.

On Monday, Mexico’s top ambassador stated that the country is demanding an immediate investigation into the growing number of instances in which Mexican drug cartels are found in possession of weapons from the U.S. military.

Rocket launchers, grenades, and belt-fed machine guns that are not sold to civilians in the U.S. have been discovered by the Mexican army.

Back in June of 2023, the Mexican army announced that it had confiscated 221 completely automatic machine firearms, 56 grenade launchers, as well as “several rocket launchers” from Mexican drug cartels since 2018.

The cartels have openly boasted about their U.S. military-grade weaponry on social media platforms, making them a special threat to Mexico’s army, which has already faced attacks from these groups using bomb-dropping drones and armored cars.

Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval announced in June that the Jalisco New Generation cartel had been discovered to be in possession of five rocket launchers, four of which had been stolen from the rival Sinaloa cartel, and three more had been taken from other cartels. However, Sandoval made no mention of the weapons originating from the U.S. military.

The U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar, declared on Monday that the matter had been brought up by Mexican officials during meetings last week. However, Salazar claimed that he was previously unaware of the issue and maintained that the U.S. would investigate further.

“We are going to look into it, we are committed to working with Sedena (Mexico’s Defense Department) to see what’s going on,” Salazar stated.

Officials say that there are “several reasonable explanations” through which the weapons could have arrived in Mexico. During ongoing cartel conflicts in the 1980s, U.S. military hardware was widely dispersed throughout Central America. Occasionally, military-grade equipment would also “vanish” from U.S. stockpiles, and some suppliers to the U.S. military could have sold their equipment and weaponry overseas or on the black market.

Even though the Mexican army and marines continue to possess superior weaponry, other branches of Mexican law enforcement are frequently outclassed by the major drug cartels’ arsenal.

The country’s drug cartels’ arsenal of weapons also often outclasses that of other arms of Mexican law enforcement, despite the army and marines possessing superior munitions.

Mexico has long struggled with the smuggling of semi-automatic rifles, which are legal for civilian use in the U.S., into a country where only low-caliber weapons are allowed and strictly regulated. Mexico has filed a number of lawsuits against American gun retailers and manufacturers, claiming that their products are being smuggled into the country and inciting violence.

According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Mexican government believes that 70% of the weapons that are trafficked into Mexico originate in the U.S.
