Body of man who mysteriously went missing discovered three days later inside tanning bed at Planet Fitness

A man was found dead inside a Planet Fitness tanning bed three days after he went missing.

Derek Sink, 39, was discovered inside the machine at the Planet Fitness on Hardegan Street in Indianapolis, Indiana on Monday around 9am.

His family told police that they last heard from him on Friday before reporting him missing on Sunday.

They told WTHR that a needle was found inside the tanning room with Sink, who has struggled with drugs in the past.

Sink's aunt said that investigators were able to track him to the gym through his ankle monitor. It is unclear why he had the device on him.

A sign was placed on the front door as of Monday that says 'tanning is currently unavailable.'

A gym member, Elizabeth Len, recalled being greeted by a foul smell when she entered the building for her morning workout Monday.

'And I was kind of like sniffing, trying not to look crazy, but I was like, "Something smells really awful here",' Len told WTHR, adding that the smell grew stronger as she neared the tanning rooms.

Len expressed concern as Sink's body was found on Monday, despite the gym being open from 7am to 7pm over the weekend.

'The first thing that kind of went off in my head was you know, lack of attention from staff members at Planet Fitness, which is pretty disappointing because maybe it could've been prevented,' she said.

'The tanning bed has a door, I believe, but still, why are we not concerned that the tanning bed has been closed for three days, potentially?'

Sink's loved ones have remembered him as a loving person.

Following his tragic passing, a friend took to Facebook and said: 'God bless you my friend.'

The family also told the outlet that they hope the company will instill stricter cleaning policies at the end of shifts so staffers can prevent this from ever happening again.

A spokesperson with Planet Fitness told DailyMail.com: 'We were deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members, and the franchise owner is working with the local authorities in their investigation.

'At Planet Fitness, we have robust operational brand protocols in place, as the safety and well-being of our members is our top priority.

'We are working closely with our local franchisee to ensure they are upholding those brand protocols.'

His cause of death has not yet been determined. Police are currently investigating his death as a homicide.

The Big Problem for Saudi Arabia’s Futuristic City? The Country Doesn’t Have Enough Money

To fully realize its ambitious plans, the kingdom would need to spend far more than the $1 trillion in its wealth fund.

The giant futuristic planned city of Neom is proving a headache for Saudi Arabia. Costs are up, schedules are delayed and in recent days the world’s largest construction project replaced its chief executive of six years.

Looming in the background: The world’s largest oil exporter is strapped for cash.

Despite its reputation for deep pockets, Saudi Arabia can’t afford the laundry list of glitzy megaprojects and economic initiatives tied to Vision 2030, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s plan to pivot the economy away from oil.

The board of Neom didn’t provide a reason why it abruptly replaced its CEO Nadhmi al-Nasr over the weekend. But former Neom employees said Nasr frequently clashed with Neom’s owner and funder, the Public Investment Fund, over swelling budgets. Billions of dollars have been spent preparing the desert sands for the remote Megalopolis.

Representatives of the Public Investment Fund and Neom didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Critics inside of Neom say money has been wasted on unnecessary groundworks. At the Line—a pair of horizontal skyscrapers to run longer than the distance from New York to Philadelphia—contractors dug out 60 miles of sand. That is despite the first phase of the project only running 10 miles, which was later downsized to 1.5 miles.

Neom isn’t alone. Projects around the kingdom are poised for a similar dynamic, with builders facing massive funding needs as they transition from low-cost early work to building out the bulk of the projects.

The crown prince announced Vision 2030 in 2016 as a sprint to reshape Saudi Arabia’s economy in 14 years. Money poured into initiatives to become a world leader in sports, videogame production and electric-vehicle manufacturing. The country pushed workers to the private sector, which accounted for 45% of gross domestic product in 2023, up from 40% in 2016.

Giant real-estate projects led the plan. Neom is the largest chunk, where officials vowed to sprout a car-free vertical city in the desert of 1 million people by 2030—and a population of 9 million years later. The price tag was $500 billion, though former executives there said it would in reality cost trillions of dollars.

Elsewhere, work is under way on a massive entertainment district near Riyadh with theme parks, the region’s biggest water park and the world’s tallest roller coaster. There is a more than $30 billion cluster of 50 resorts on the Red Sea and a massive Riyadh development anchored by a giant cube that measures one-quarter of a mile tall.

The spending list has grown. In the past 12 months, Saudi Arabia has announced a $100 billion initiative for advanced electronics, has designs on investing in artificial intelligence and has promised to build 11 futuristic stadiums tied to a bid to host the World Cup, including one atop a skyscraper at Neom.

Together, the price tag of all the plans runs into the trillions of dollars if fully built, far more than the country’s $1 trillion wealth fund—which includes investments that would be difficult to sell—has at its disposal.

While the kingdom has enough revenue for everyday services and kept debt levels moderate, the price of oil has left a gaping hole in its ability to generate cash. Oil sales account for half of Saudi Arabia’s budget and prices of Brent crude are sagging at $72 a barrel, far below the $96 a barrel the International Monetary Fund estimates Saudi Arabia needs to balance its budget. The Saudi Ministry of Finance recently projected budget deficits years into the future, scrapping prior forecasts for surpluses.

Saudi officials have said that the private sector would shoulder the costs of its overhaul.

But foreign direct investment was just $26 billion last year and shows no signs of hitting the kingdom’s 2030 target of $100 billion a year. Investors have said they are put off by the complexity of projects like Neom, and wary of legal structures in Saudi Arabia, which the government recently changed to appeal more to Western investors.

The country still has over $400 billion in currency reserves to keep the Saudi riyal tied to the dollar. But the reserves have shrunk in recent years and dropped by over 7% between August and October.

Karen Young, a nonresident senior fellow at the Washington-based Middle East Institute, said there is a realization in the Saudi government that the expansive list of announced projects won’t be built in full. From the beginning, she said, Saudi officials were clear that if they completed half of what they set out to do, it would be a success.

“We’re now at that point where you start cutting,” she said, a move she believes won’t prove controversial with a public accustomed to quick swings in policy.

Mohammed al-Jadaan, the fiance minister, told a podcast earlier this year the government studied all its proposals and found a “gap” where the demands for money were greater than what would be available. Since then, unannounced projects were canceled and others were scaled back, he said.

Still, they have yet to disclose many cuts publicly. The International Monetary Fund said making changes public “will be important to help provide clarity on government priorities to investors and the public.”

On an October investor call, the Danish freight company DSV said the start of significant work on a $10 billion planned logistics venture with Neom would be delayed longer than expected, but couldn’t tell investors exactly for how long.

“We will see,” said Jens Lund, the company’s CEO. “I’m sure that they want to complete or reach the milestones that they have set out. Otherwise, they will announce something.”

The next steps for Neom under its new leader—an executive who comes from the Public Investment Fund—are unclear.

Work is now under way on early foundation work on another part of the Line, where contractors have dug a massive 150-foot hole and are installing thousands of concrete columns further into the ground. A major boost in spending, though, only starts in the next phase: building up.

According to the International Diabetes Federation, 537 million people between the ages of 20 and 79 suffered from diabetes worldwide in 2021. This represents 10.5 percent of the world population in this age group.

As Statista's Anna Fleck details below, the total number of adults with the disease is projected to increase to 787 million (12.2 percent of the global population) by 2045.

The regions with the highest estimated numbers of adults suffering from the disease are the West Pacific and South East Asia.

The African continent is expected to see the largest increase in the number of people living with the disease, with the International Diabetes Federation predicting a more than 130 percent increase in cases by 2045.

In Europe, just over 61 million adults were estimated to have diabetes in 2021, a figure that is expected to reach 69.2 million by 2045.

The International Federation highlights that globally, diabetes is now among the top ten causes of death, and represents a serious and growing challenge to public health.

If I worked at DOGE, I would refactor the government and eliminate waste and corruption by simply using math.

Each government department will be considered a function that transforms inputs like resources, information, or finances into an output like a service or result.

Other inputs might be budget allocations, personnel, data streams, and other outputs might be services, results, or even other departments or personnel.

From this perspective we will be able to see how the different departments interact and depend on each other.

From there we simply apply functional composition.

Just like with a spaghetti codebase, we refactor the departments and cut out corruption and waste. While reorganizing any under/over utilized resources and applying them to where they will be best utilized.

This type of mathematical optimization will quickly identify bottlenecks to fix and inefficiencies to eliminate.

Kiev’s Center for Countering Disinformation had accused Tulsi Gabbard of working “for Kremlin money”

Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) has removed news bulletins in which it accused Donald Trump's pick to oversee the CIA and NSA, former US Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, of spreading fake news on behalf of Russia.

Gabbard, a long time critic of open aid to Ukraine and a lieutenant colonel in the US Army Reserve, has been selected by Trump as his pick for director of national intelligence.

Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council set up the CCD in March 2021 with the stated goal of fighting disinformation in news reports and on social media.The agency focuses on flagging and “debunking” stories that are critical of Ukraineand has accused many Russian and Western officials of spreading “fake news.”

According to the news website Strana.ua, theCCD took down four of its bulletins mentioning Gabbard from social media, including one from April 2022 thatdescribed her as someone who “for several years, has been working for foreign audience for the Kremlin money.”

A June 2024 bulletin accused Gabbard of spreading disinformation about Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, and a February 2023 post claimed thepolitician was “espousing pro-Russian rhetoric.”

Both were removed as of Thursday morning, Strana.ua said. At the time of writing, the CCD’s 2022 post accusing Gabbard of taking “the Kremlin money”is still up on the National Security and Defense Council’s account on X.The link to the CCD bulletin is inactive, however.

Kiev has repeatedly lashed out at Western public figures critical of Ukraine, including journalist Tucker Carlson and tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Gabbard, who has long opposed US military interventions in the Middle East and has accused Washington of warmongering, left the Democratic Party in 2022. Last month, she announced that she had joined the Republican Party and was backing Trump.

In 2022, Gabbard argued that the conflict in Ukraine could have been avoided if the US “had simply acknowledged Russia’s legitimate security concerns” regarding Kiev’s aspirations to join NATO. She has since insisted that the conflict should be resolved through negotiations and that Ukraine should become a neutral country.

Gabbard slammed Zelensky last year,accusing him of seizing “absolute control of Ukrainian media, outlawing opposition political parties.”

Cellphone radiation has led to changes in the brain tissue of lab rats

Controlled exposure to the 5G radiation spectrum has resulted in changes to the brain tissue of laboratory rats, according to a team of scientists from Tomsk State University (TSU) in Russia.

Ever since the introduction of 5G cellphone infrastructure, there have been concerns about its potential health effects. The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified the 5G radio frequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) as a “possible” human carcinogen, but no conclusive research has emerged either way.

“We decided to find out what the effect of non-ionizing radiation is on rodents of different ages,"Natalia Krivova, lead researcher at the TSU’s Biology and Biophysics Research Institute, said in a statement this week.

TSU scientists experimented on male Wistar rats, preferred by scientists for having similar reactions to external stimuli as humans. They tested three different age groups: 5-6 week old rats (corresponding to human adolescents), 10-11 week old (human adults age 40 and up) and rats aged 17-18 weeks (humans 65 and older).All were exposed to RF-EMF frequencies for five weeks, which is equivalent to about four years of human lifespan.

The study showed no outward changes between the rats exposed to the radiation and the control group.

“However, a more detailed study of the rats’ brain tissueafter exposure to the 5G antenna revealed a significant change in the ratio of antioxidants and oxidants,” Krivova said.

It is stillunclear whether the changes will lead to positive or negative changes in the rats’ cognitive abilities, or whether their bodies will somehow compensate for the disruption==, she added, calling for further research into the subject.

The Tomsk study represents the first time scientists have been able to measure the radiation absorption rate on caged rodents, according to the university. The TSU radiophysics team led by Professor Sergey Shipilov designed the 5G antenna for the experiment, and a team led by postgraduate student Ramdas Mazmanazarov developed a method for measuring the absorption rate. Their work was published earlier this year in the journal Applied Sciences.

The study was part of the International Electromagnetic Field Project, initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to obtain science-based and objective answers to questions of public concern about the possible health risks from 5G electromagnetic fields.

According to Krivova, thenext stage of research is intended to study female rats and investigate how 5G radiation might affect their offspring, if funding can be secured.

Kiev’s top brass views Pompeo, a former CIA director and secretary of state,as an ally sympathetic to Ukraine’s cause, so Trump’s announcement last Saturdayto exclude him from his cabinet is seen as a “very negative development,” one official told the British publication.

Pompeo’s connections to Ukraine go beyond diplomacy.In 2023, he joined the board of Kyivstar, a leading Ukrainian telecoms company, securing a lucrative position that Kiev believed would reinforce his support for the country.

This lucrative role raised eyebrows and met withcomparisons to a previous executive role conferred on President Joe Biden’s son Hunter.

Meanwhile, Zelensky’s team has reportedly worked to highlight Ukraine’s potential importance in curbing China’s influence by denying it access to Ukraine’s mineral resources, positioning continued US support as part of a broader geopolitical strategy.

According to The Economist, Trump’s decision may have been influenced by ideological differences rather than any rift with Pompeo personally, who unlike several former Trump officials, has refrained from publicly criticizing the president-elect. However,with Pompeo off Trump’s team, Ukrainian officials remain wary, as his absence may lead to diminished US support.

A powerful dust storm swept through California’s Madera County on Monday afternoon along State Route 152, causing a car pileup as several vehicles collided due to severely reduced visibility.

Approximately 20 cars were involved in the pileup, according to the California Highway Patrol. Several people sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

“It was terrifying, it was just terrifying. We got hit, we thought we were okay, then we got hit again, and again. We just thought it wasn’t going to end. I really thought we were going to die. I’m really thankful we’re okay,” said Delissa Fulce, one of the drivers stranded on the highway.

The storm reportedly downed several fences and trees as it swept through the region.

Wind Blowing Out of Uranus Makes It Hard to Probe, NASA Complains

Scientists have found that a "rare intense wind event" during NASA's Voyager 2 flyby of Uranus in 1986 may have seriously messed with our understanding of the planet.

And yes, we admit, the jokes practically write themselves.

But the research is very real. As detailed in a new paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy, NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab scientist Jamie Jasinski and an international team of researchers found that our current understanding of Uranus may be based on data collected during an unusual period of time when Uranus' magnetosphere was in an "anomalous, compressed state," which only occurs "less than five percent of the time."

In other words, our current understanding of the distant planet may be far more limited than we thought because the Sun was pelting Uranus with solar weather at the time.

Letting Rip

Jasinksi reexamined the data collected by Voyager 2 during its 1986 flyby and found that the probe had examined Uranus shortly after an intense solar wind event, which saw a huge surge of charged particles blast its way from the Sun.

The event compressed the planet's magnetosphere, they found, causing it to deform into a significantly asymmetrical shape that appeared to lack plasma.

"We postulate that such a compression of the magnetosphere could increase energetic electron fluxes within the radiation belts and empty the magnetosphere of its plasma temporarily," the researchers wrote in their paper.

Even if Voyager 2 had come to visit a mere week earlier, the researchers suggest, it would have found a far more recognizable magnetosphere, like those surrounding other planets in our solar system, including Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune.

"Owing to the variation of the solar wind at Uranus, we suggest that there may be two magnetospheric cycles during solar minimum," the researchers suggested, referring to the calmest period of the Sun's 11-year solar cycle.

Intriguingly, Uranus' two most distant moons Titania and Oberon may be orbiting the planet outside the magnetosphere, which could give astronomers an unprecedented look at their subsurface oceans without any electromagnetic interference.

In short, we shouldn't draw any definitive conclusions from NASA's flyby almost 40 years ago.

"We highlight that our understanding of the Uranus system is highly limited, and our analysis shows that any conclusions made from the Voyager 2 flyby are similarly tentative," the researchers conclude in their paper.

"We suggest that discoveries made by the Voyager 2 flyby should not be assigned any typicality regarding Uranus’s magnetosphere."

NASA is exploring a groundbreaking initiative to enhance operations on the Moon with the proposed Lunar South Pole Oxygen Pipeline (L-SPoP).

The Artemis program, which aims to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon, depends heavily on utilizing in-situ resources to minimize the need for supplies from Earth.

Oxygen, essential for life support and rocket propulsion, is being extracted from lunar regolith and water ice through advanced technologies that NASA has already invested in.

These oxygen extraction methods are expected to be demonstrated on a large scale as early as 2024, with the potential to support Artemis astronauts by 2026.

Currently, the extracted oxygen is stored in compressed gas tanks or liquefied in dewars, requiring transportation across the Moon's surface.

If you don’t know about the Matt Gaetz story, it’s fascinating. There was a FBI investigation into somebody who Matt Gaetz knows, that person ended up pleading guilty. But the department of Justice and the FBI really wanted to get Matt Gaetz, not the other guy.

Former department of Justice official met with the father of Matt Gaetz, and tried to extort him for $25 million dollars. The local FBI office told his father to wear a wire… which he did.

This resulted in the arrest and conviction of Stephen Alford for extortion. The former DOJ official who met with his father on behalf of Alford was never mentioned.

Alford in conjunction with this former DOJ official wanted Gaetz to plead guilty, and if he did they promised him a pardon.

This was all happening while the FBI was probing Matt Gaetz for s*x trafficking. Of course charges were never filed. And he was CLEARED of all wrongdoing.

But you know what’s really ironic, the subject of the ethics complaint is a 17-year-old girl that Matt Gaetz supposedly slept with.

It’s so strange because that’s exactly the charge that the FBI cleared him of.

They don’t have a crime, they have a girl who is three degrees of separation from someone in the FBI who is now making allegations even though the FBI couldn’t prosecute Gaetz for this criminally.

Do you know who has extensive ties to the ethics committee in the House of Representatives? I’m sure it’s just a coincidence that it’s Kevin McCarthy. Kevin McCarthy has spent the entire time since getting ousted by Matt Gaetz for being a horrible speaker trying to take him down.

Again, total coincidence, not a plot to destroy one of the biggest fighters in Congress.

South Pole Safety: Designing the NASA Lunar Rescue System

In the unforgiving lunar environment, the possibility of an astronaut crewmember becoming incapacitated due to unforeseen circumstances (injury, medical emergency, or a mission-related accident) is a critical concern, starting with the upcoming Artemis III mission, where two astronaut crewmembers will explore the Lunar South Pole.

The Moon’s surface is littered with rocks ranging from 0.15 to 20 meters in diameter and craters spanning 1 to 30 meters wide, making navigation challenging even under optimal conditions.

The low gravity, unique lighting conditions, extreme temperatures, and availability of only one person to perform the rescue, further complicate any rescue efforts.

Among the critical concerns is the safety of astronauts during Extravehicular Activities (EVAs).

If an astronaut crewmember becomes incapacitated during a mission, the ability to return them safely and promptly to the human landing system is essential.

A single crew member should be able to transport an incapacitated crew member distances up to 2 km and a slope of up to 20 degrees on the lunar terrain without the assistance of a lunar rover.

This pressing issue opens the door for innovative solutions.

We are looking for a cutting-edge design that is low in mass and easy to deploy, enabling one astronaut crewmember to safely transport their suited (343 kg (~755lb)) and fully incapacitated partner back to the human landing system.

The solution must perform effectively in the Moon’s extreme South Pole environment and operate independently of a lunar rover.

NASA and Forest Service Use Balloon to Help Firefighters Communicate

NASA is participating in a collaborative effort to use high-altitude balloons to improve real-time communications among firefighters battling wildland fires.

The rugged and often remote locations where wildland fires burn mean cell phone service is often limited, making communication between firefighters and command posts difficult.

The flight testing of the Strategic Tactical Radio and Tactical Overwatch (STRATO) technology brought together experts from NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, the U.S. Forest Service, high-altitude balloon company Aerostar, and Motorola to provide cell service from above.

The effort was funded by the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s Earth Science Division Airborne Science Program and the agency’s Space Technology Mission Directorate Flight Opportunities program.

“This project leverages NASA expertise to address real problems,” said Don Sullivan, principal investigator for STRATO at NASA Ames.

“We do a lot of experimental, forward-thinking work, but this is something that is operational and can make an immediate impact.”

Flying High Above Wildland Fires

Soaring above Earth at altitudes of 50,000 feet or more, Aerostar’s Thunderhead high-altitude balloon systems can stay in operation for several months and can be directed to “station keep,” staying within a radius of few miles.

Because wildland fires often burn in remote, rugged areas, firefighting takes place in areas where cell service is not ideal.

Providing cellular communication from above, from a vehicle that can move as the fire changes, would improve firefighter safety and firefighting efficiency.

The STRATO project’s first test flight took place over the West Mountain Complex fires in Idaho in August and demonstrated significant opportunities to support future firefighting efforts.

The balloon was fitted with a cellular LTE transmitter and visual and infrared cameras.

To transmit between the balloon’s cell equipment and the wildland fire incident command post, the team used a SpaceX Starlink internet satellite device and Silvus broadband wireless system.

When tested, the onboard instruments provided cell coverage for a 20-mile radius. By placing the transmitter on a gimbal, that cell service coverage could be adjusted as ground crews moved through the region.

The onboard cameras gave fire managers and firefighters on the ground a bird’s-eye view of the fires as they spread and moved, opening the door to increased situational awareness and advanced tracking of firefighting crews.

On the ground, teams use an app called Tactical Awareness Kit (TAK) to identify the locations of crew and equipment.

Connecting the STRATO equipment to TAK provides real-time location information that can help crews pinpoint how the fire moves and where to direct resources while staying in constant communication.

Soaring Into the Future

The next steps for the STRATO team are to use the August flight test results to prepare for future fire seasons.

The team plans to optimize balloon locations as a constellation to maximize coverage and anticipate airflow changes in the stratosphere where the balloons fly.

By placing balloons in strategic locations along the airflow path, they can act as replacements to one another as they are carried by airflow streams.

The team may also adapt the scientific equipment aboard the balloons to support other wildland fire initiatives at NASA.

As the team prepares for further testing next year, the goal is to keep firefighters informed and in constant communication with each other and their command posts to improve the safety and efficiency of fighting wildland fires.

“Firefighters work incredibly hard saving lives and property over long days of work,” said Sullivan. “I feel honored to be able to do what we can to make their jobs safer and better.”

NASA Seeks Options for Future Headquarters Building

As the agency continues to explore for the benefit of all, NASA is in the process of searching for a new headquarters facility in Washington or the immediate surrounding area.

The current NASA Headquarters lease expires in August 2028, and the agency already has evaluated multiple options including leasing or purchasing within the District of Columbia.

Through a request for information published Thursday, NASA took a small step in a longer process to determine the best outcome for the agency and U.S. taxpayers.

“With a new facility on the horizon, NASA has a unique opportunity to better meet the needs of a new generation of explorers, discoverers, and public servants – the Artemis Generation,” said Bob Gibbs, associate administrator, Mission Support Directorate.

“The next NASA Headquarters will reflect our journey in a facility that inspires and engages the public, aligns with new ways of working, fosters innovation and connection, and maximizes taxpayer funding.”

NASA is asking for responses from members of the development community, local and state jurisdictions, academia, other federal agencies, commercial aerospace partners, and other interested parties to help inform its decision.

Needs for a new headquarters includes approximately 375,000 to 525,000 square feet of office space to house NASA’s workforce.

The desired location is within walking distance to a Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority station.

In addition, the new location also needs parking options, as well as convenient access to food establishments.

Other ideal characteristics for a new setting include the capability to renovate the space to create a dynamic, flexible, and adaptive work environment inclusive of open work areas, enclosed offices, open collaboration areas, teaming rooms, conference rooms, sensitive compartmented information facilities, and secured storage spaces, to include potential stakeholder meeting, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) educational outreach, and storage spaces.

Responses to the request for information are due no later than 12 p.m. EST on Jan. 15, 2025.

This call for ideas is for informational purposes only and is intended to assist NASA with its planning and strategic decisions regarding a future facility.

It is not a request for a lease proposal or a solicitation for a contract or other agreement, and it does not obligate NASA in any way.

Under the leadership of the administrator, NASA Headquarters provides overall guidance and direction to the agency, through 10-field centers and a variety of installations nationwide.

Telescope for NASA’s Roman Mission Complete, Delivered to Goddard

NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is one giant step closer to unlocking the mysteries of the universe.

The mission has now received its final major delivery: the Optical Telescope Assembly, which includes a 7.9-foot (2.4-meter) primary mirror, nine additional mirrors, and supporting structures and electronics.

The assembly was delivered Nov. 7. to the largest clean room at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, where the observatory is being built.

The telescope will focus cosmic light and send it to Roman’s instruments, revealing many billions of objects strewn throughout space and time.

Using the mission’s Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera, astronomers will survey the cosmos all the way from the outskirts of our solar system toward the edge of the observable universe.

Scientists will use Roman’s Coronagraph Instrument to test new technologies for dimming host stars to image planets and dusty disks around them in far better detail than ever before.

“We have a top-notch telescope that’s well aligned and has great optical performance at the cold temperatures it will see in space,” said Bente Eegholm, optics lead for Roman’s Optical Telescope Assembly at NASA Goddard.

“I am now looking forward to the next phase where the telescope and instruments will be put together to form the Roman observatory.”

Designed and built by L3Harris Technologies in Rochester, New York, the assembly incorporates key optics (including the primary mirror) that were made available to NASA by the National Reconnaissance Office.

The team at L3Harris then reshaped the mirror and built upon the inherited hardware to ensure it would meet Roman’s specifications for expansive, sensitive infrared observations.

“The telescope will be the foundation of all of the science Roman will do, so its design and performance are among the largest factors in the mission’s survey capability,” said Josh Abel, lead Optical Telescope Assembly systems engineer at NASA Goddard.

The team at Goddard worked closely with L3Harris to ensure these stringent requirements were met and that the telescope assembly will integrate smoothly into the rest of the Roman observatory.

The assembly’s design and performance will largely determine the quality of the mission’s results, so the manufacturing and testing processes were extremely rigorous.

Each optical component was tested individually prior to being assembled and assessed together earlier this year.

The tests helped ensure that the alignment of the telescope’s mirrors will change as expected when the telescope reaches its operating temperature in space.

Then, the telescope was put through tests simulating the extreme shaking and intense sound waves associated with launch.

Engineers also made sure that tiny components called actuators, which will adjust some of the mirrors in space, move as predicted.

And the team measured gases released from the assembly as it transitioned from normal air pressure to a vacuum –– the same phenomenon that has led astronauts to report that space smells gunpowdery or metallic.

If not carefully controlled, these gases could contaminate the telescope or instruments.

Finally, the telescope underwent a month-long thermal vacuum test to ensure it will withstand the temperature and pressure environment of space.

The team closely monitored it during cold operating conditions to ensure the telescope’s temperature will remain constant to within a fraction of a degree.

Holding the temperature constant allows the telescope to remain in stable focus, making Roman’s high-resolution images consistently sharp. Nearly 100 heaters on the telescope will help keep all parts of it at a very stable temperature.

“It is very difficult to design and build a system to hold temperatures to such a tight stability, and the telescope performed exceptionally,” said Christine Cottingham, thermal lead for Roman’s Optical Telescope Assembly at NASA Goddard.

Now that the assembly has arrived at Goddard, it will be installed onto Roman’s Instrument Carrier, a structure that will keep the telescope and Roman’s two instruments optically aligned.

The assembly’s electronics box –– essentially the telescope’s brain –– will be mounted within the spacecraft along with Roman’s other electronics.

With this milestone, Roman remains on track for launch by May 2027.

“Congratulations to the team on this stellar accomplishment!” said J. Scott Smith, the assembly’s telescope manager at NASA Goddard.
