CENTCOM strikes Iran-backed militias in Syria after rockets launched at U.S. forces

The U.S. military conducted retaliatory airstrikes Tuesday in Syria, targeting facilities of Iran-backed militias following rockets launched at U.S. forces in the Middle Eastern country.

U.S. Central Command said in a statement that on Tuesday, its warplanes hit weapons storage facilities and logistics headquarters belonging to unspecified Iran-backed militias in Syria.

It said the strikes were intended to "degrade the Iranian-backed groups' ability to plan and launch future attacks on U.S. and Coalition forces who are in the region to conduct D-ISIS operations."

Some 900 U.S. troops are on the ground in Syria in support of counter-Islamic State operations with local partners.

P.S. regarding Carly Fiorina? I used to work at HP during her reign of terror. It was awful. I vividly remember when one of my colleagues at HP, a guy who was paid a lot more than I was, committed suicide in his mid-40s. It shocked everyone but Carly drove so many nuts.

Abstract

The term meme was coined in 1976 by Richard Dawkins to explore the ways in which

Prince Turki bin Faisal al-Saud, former Saudi ambassador to the United States, has written an open letter to President-elect Donald Trump asking him to “finish what you started the last time you occupied the White House” with respect to Middle Eastern affairs.

Prince Turki, who was the ambassador to the United States from 2005-2007 and also served as director of Saudi Arabia’s foreign intelligence service, buttered Trump up in the opening paragraph of his letter:

After your remarkable and outstanding victory in an election campaign marked by lawfare waged against you and a fear-inspiring verbal assault aimed at the American people warning them not to vote for you, you prevailed against those challenges and the American people gave you their trust and confidence to lead them to what you promised to give them, a better America. You also overturned the Senate majority from the other party to yours and brought your party within striking distance of a House majority.

I am gratified that the American election system worked so smoothly and decisively to determine the winners from the losers, unlike the contentious one before.

These facts give your friends and allies around the world the confidence that your leadership will be as decisive as the election results and put to rest the arguments of those who contend America is on the wane.

Having laid the groundwork by ticking off every box on the “How to Get Invited to Mar-a-Lago” checklist – his comment about the “contentious” 2020 election was an especially nice touch – Prince Turki asked Trump to direct his attention to the “hot spots” that surround Saudi Arabia in the Middle East. He noted those spots were a good deal cooler before President Joe Biden took office.

“When you left in January 2021, there was no war in Gaza, Iran and Israel were not firing missiles at each other, the Houthis were not interdicting shipping in Bab Al Mandab, there was no civil war in Sudan,” Turki pointed out.

The Saudi prince’s tone became a little rougher when discussing Israel’s campaign against the terrorists of Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon – a war the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, denounced as “genocide” on Tuesday.

“Although Israel has decapitated the leadership of both Hamas and Hezbollah, the latter are still capable of killing Israeli soldiers and firing projectiles and other ordinance at Israel,” Turki said, handling the matter a bit more delicately than his crown prince, although he slipped in a jab at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by calling him a warmonger.

Turki added the Gaza and Lebanon wars to the “bloodbath” in Ukraine to make the case that the world is “in more turmoil” than when Trump last held office.

“I believe God spared your life not only to deal with the situation inside the United States, which faces enormous challenges for you to overcome, but, because America is what it is, to work with your friends in Saudi Arabia and other friends you have in the area, to pursue what you started before: to bring PEACE, with capital letters, to the Middle East,” he told Trump.

Turki was a little vague about how Trump might smooth the turmoil of the Biden-Harris world, but he strongly implied Trump should renew his Abraham Accords peace initiative, which seemed on the verge of bringing Israel and Saudi Arabia together until Hamas attacked Israeli civilians on October 7, 2023. Indeed, many analysts believe one of the reasons Hamas perpetrated those atrocities was to prevent other Middle Eastern states from joining the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain in the Abraham Accords.

“Before your first stay at the White House and until your return to it, America and other countries talked the talk about ending the bloodshed in the Middle East but they never walked the walk. You have a chance now to do precisely that,” Prince Turki grumbled in his letter to Trump.

“Take advantage of the four years to come and work with King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman to open the doors to peace for all of us,” he urged the president-elect.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — On Tuesday, Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced a new state employee pay plan that she said will "streamline career tracks, consolidate job titles, and bring state employee pay up to labor market rates."

The governor made the announcement from the State Capitol in Little Rock, where she pointed to four key career paths that will be the beneficiary of the pay raise — correctional officers, social services, state police, and nursing.

Here's a breakdown of how the governor intends to increase salaries within those respective fields:

Correctional officers: Average entry-level salaries will increase by 35.3%, from $37,589 to $50,845, and average salaries will increase by 17.1%, from $50,461 to $59,100.

Social services:Average entry-level salaries will increase by 20.5%, from $44,172 to $52,442, and average salaries will increase by 15.3%, from $48,733 to $55,364.

State Police:Average entry-level salaries will increase by 19.8%, from $56,498 to $67,706, and average salaries will increase by 10.4%, from $73,318 to $80,930.

Nursing:Average entry-level salaries will increase by 8.3%, from $51,032 to $54,661, and average salaries will increase by 9.6%, from $57,686 to $61,552.

In order to establish this new state employee pay plan, the governor said that she had to take the existing plan "down to its studs" to incentivize Arkansans to apply for hard-to-fill essential positions.

“We took the existing pay plan down to its studs to rebuild a compensation system that rewards hard work and encourages Arkansans to apply to our most hard-to-fill positions," Gov. Sanders said. "I look forward to working with the legislature to pass this plan and deliver these long overdue reforms for our state employees.”

According to Gov. Sanders, the proposed pay plan would raise wages for 14,539 state employees in Arkansas and target career fields that are facing chronic shortages — this includes the aforementioned correctional officers, social services, state police, and nursing fields.

The governor said that this new pay plan will also consolidate around 2,200 current jobs titles into roughly 800 "proposed job titles that match their equivalent in the private labor force."

According to a press release, the governor's balanced budget will reflect the updated pay plan, which is expected to be presented in full this November.

"The updated pay plan will be included in the Governor’s balanced budget, which will be presented in full later this month. The total cost will be just over $102 million with nearly $60 million coming from General Revenue and the rest coming from other sources. Much of this cost will be absorbed by existing funding, due to salary savings and existing vacancies," Gov. Sanders said in a press release.

This new pay plan is part of the Governor’s broader Arkansas Forward initiative.If passed, it would go into effect in July of 2025.

The intricate network of dusty filaments and bubbles is created by young stars along spiral arms winding from the galaxy's central bar. Astronomers suspect the gravity field of NGC 1365's bar plays a crucial role in the galaxy's evolution, funneling gas and dust into a star-forming maelstrom and ultimately feeding material into the active galaxy's central, supermassive black hole.

It also remains unclear what he was doing in Cambodia at the time of this arrest - whether on the run or perhaps merely traveling abroad, or possibly for work.

The FBI previously said it was "working closely with our partners in the Department of Defense and intelligence community" to track down the leaker. From the start, federal investigators made clear that they believed it to be the result of an intelligence insider, and not the result of a foreign hacking operation.

Workers making way for NASA’s Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, likely did not realize they were building something that would not only withstand the test of time but transcend it.

Mosquitoes, snakes, hurricanes, and intense south Mississippi heat – early crews faced all with a spirit of resilience and adaptability that remains a hallmark characteristic of NASA Stennis six decades later.

“From going to the Moon for the first time and now returning to the Moon, you can trace a straight line of propulsion testing at NASA Stennis,” said Maury Vander, chief of the NASA Stennis Test Operations Division.

“We still stand on the front lines of support for this country’s space program.”

For five decades and counting, the versatile NASA Stennis test stands have been used for stage, engine, and component testing on multiple NASA and commercial projects.

Three NASA Stennis stands – Fred Haise (formerly the A-1 Test Stand), A-2, and Thad Cochran (B-1/B-2) – date to the 1960s, when they were built to test Saturn V rocket stages for Apollo missions to the Moon.

The Fred Haise and A-2 stand were single-position stands for testing one Saturn V second stage at a time.

The Thad Cochran featured two positions – (B-1 and B-2) – that could each house a Saturn V first stage, although only the B-2 position was used during Apollo testing.

When the Apollo Program ended, the Fred Haise, A-2, and Thad Cochran (B-1) stands were modified to test single engines rather than rocket stages.

All three were used in subsequent years to test space shuttle main engines and others. Meanwhile, the Thad Cochran (B-2) stand was maintained for full stage testing.

The space shuttle Main Propulsion Test Article was tested on the stand, as was the Common Core Booster for the Delta IV rocket.

Most recently, the stand was used to test the first SLS (Space Launch System) stage that helped launch the Artemis I mission in 2022.

In 2024, the Fred Haise Test Stand is dedicated to RS-25 engine testing for NASA’s Artemis initiative. Every RS-25 engine that will help launch an SLS rocket during Artemis will be tested on the stand.

The A-2 stand has been leased to Relativity Space, which is modifying it to support stage testing for its new rocket.

In 2023, the Thad Cochran (B-1) stand concluded more than 20 years of RS-68 testing for Aerojet Rocketdyne (now known as L3Harris) and now is open for commercial use.

The Thad Cochran (B-2) stand is being prepared to test NASA’s new SLS exploration upper stage before it flies on a future Artemis mission.

“When you think about the work at NASA Stennis, this is a place that helps write history,” Vander said.

“And in a sense, these test stands are timeless, still operating as designed 60 years after they were built, so there is more history yet to come.”

NASA Stennis also constructed a fourth large test structure in the 2010s. The A-3 Test Stand is uniquely designed to simulate high altitudes up to 100,000 feet for testing engines and stages that need to fire in space.

Rocket Lab currently leases the A-3 Test Stand area for construction of its Archimedes Test Complex.

NASA Stennis also operates a smaller test area to conduct component, subsystem, and system level testing.

The area is now known as the E Test Complex and features four facilities, all developed from the late 1980s to the early 1990s.

Construction of the E-1 Test Stand, then known as the Component Test Facility, began to support a joint project involving NASA and the U.S. Air Force project.

Although the project was canceled, a second joint endeavor allowed completion of the test facility.

While we have taken various measures to meet our current FY’25 budget allocation, we have reached the difficult decision to reduce the JPL workforce through layoffs.

This reduction affects approximately 325 of our colleagues, an impact of about 5% of our workforce. The impacts are occurring across technical, business, and support areas of the Laboratory.

These are painful but necessary adjustments that will enable us to adhere to our budget while continuing our important work for NASA and our nation.

The following is a memo sent earlier today from JPL Director Laurie Leshin to employees:

Dear Colleagues,

This is a message I had hoped not to have to write. I’m reaching out to share the difficult news that JPL will be taking a workforce action tomorrow, Nov. 13, resulting in a layoff of approximately 325 of our colleagues, or ~5% of our workforce.

Despite this being incredibly difficult for our community, this number is lower than projected a few months ago thanks in part to the hard work of so many people across JPL.

The workforce assessment conducted as part of this process has been both extensive and thorough, and although we can never have perfect insight into the future, I sincerely believe that after this action we will be at a more stable workforce level moving forward.

How we got here:

During our last town hall, I discussed our continued funding challenges and projections of what the potential impact on our workforce could look like.

I shared that we had been working through multiple workforce scenarios to address the dynamic funding environment, and that we have been doing everything we can, in partnership with our colleagues at NASA and elsewhere, to minimize adverse effects on JPL’s capabilities and team.

Unfortunately, despite all these efforts, we need to make one further workforce reduction to meet the available funding for FY’25.

This reduction is spread across essentially all areas of the Lab including our technical, project, business, and support areas.

We have taken seriously the need to re-size our workforce, whether direct-funded (project) or funded on overhead (burden).

With lower budgets and based on the forecasted work ahead, we had to tighten our belts across the board, and you will see that reflected in the layoff impacts.

As part of our workforce assessment and determining where reductions are being made, we have taken time to complete a full review of our competencies, future mission needs, and we have established guidance for our core capabilities across the Laboratory.

We have worked closely with the Executive Council, division managers, project leadership and others to ensure we maintain the appropriate levels of technical expertise, capacity for innovation, and ability to deliver on an exciting future for JPL.

Our focus will continue to be on empowering managers to support their teams through this action and equipping all of us with a variety of resources as we move forward together.

Here are the details about what will happen tomorrow:

Unless notified otherwise, all employees are required to work from home tomorrow Nov. 13, regardless of their telework status.

Tomorrow you will be invited to a short, virtual, Lab-wide meeting with myself and Deputy Director Leslie Livesay at 9:30 a.m. We will relay the details of where we are in the process and what to expect.

Please look out for the meeting notification that will follow this memo. There will not be organization-level notification meetings as in February. This one meeting will provide the information needed for the entire Lab at once.

Our approach is to prioritize notifying everyone via email as quickly as possible whether their role is being affected by the layoff or not.

Then we can rapidly shift to providing personalized support to our laid-off colleagues who are part of the workforce reduction, including offering dedicated time to discuss their benefits, and several other forms of assistance.

Because of system limitations, the individual email notifications will take place over several hours tomorrow. A schedule of the notifications, which will occur by organization, will be shared in the virtual briefing tomorrow morning and also posted on JPL Space, the JPL HR Website, and Slack.

A St. Petersburg-based technology company, RAU IT, has filed a trademark application in Russia for a new vodka brandnamed “Trumpovka” in honour of re-elected US President Donald Trump.

The application, submitted to Rospatent, includes a distinctive label featuring Trump’s silhouette holding an accordion.

RAU IT provides digital solutions and software development for Russian giants such as Gazprom, Rosatom, and Lukoil, yet it has no background in the beverage industry.The company states it has no immediate plans to release "Trumpovka" but aims to protect the brand name from competitorswho might capitalise on Trump’s name in the Russian market. The company also intends to extend the brand to non-alcoholic products, such as mineral water and isotonic drinks aimed at office workers.

RAU IT, co-owned by Yuri Pavlov and Commercial Director Eduard Przhibysh, generated revenue of over RUB157mn ($1.6mn) last year, with net profits of around RUB5mn ($50,900), reported Russian news outlet RBK.

“We thought that, amid the hype around the US presidential elections, some alcohol manufacturers might start producing vodka with a namesimilar to Donald Trump’s,” the company told RBK. “To prevent this, we preemptively applied for the ‘Trumpovka’ trademark, ensuring that the news story wouldn’t be exploited by companies aiming to boost alcohol sales through sensational headlines.”

RAU IT's move reflects a trend in Russia of using high-profile political figures in branding. It follows the precedent set by "Putinka," an iconic vodka brandlaunched in 2003 as a tribute to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Created by marketerStanislav Kaufman, "Putinka" rapidly became one of Russia’s top-selling vodkas, benefiting from Putin’s popularity. Another brand, “Volodya and the Bears,” which alludes to Medvedev and Putin, famously faced legal hurdles before it secured trademark approval.

Trump, who is teetotal, has himself previously ventured into the vodka market with Trump Vodka in 2005. Production of Trump-branded vodka ceased in 2011 due to low sales and contractual disputes, though the product continues to be sold in Israel around Passover as a kosher, potato-based drink.

President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday named Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and military veteran, as his pick for defense secretary.

In a statement, Trump described Hegseth as "tough, smart and a true believer in America First."

"With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice — Our Military will be Great Again, and America will Never Back Down," Trump said.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., applauded Trump’s selection, calling Hegseth a “great choice.”

“Pete brings a lot to the table. He’s got experience, and I think he’ll be reform-minded in the areas that need reform. So I’m excited about the pick,” Johnson told reporters on Capitol Hill, without elaborating on what programs he thinks need changing.

Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash, the top Democraton the House Armed Services Committee, said he was caught off guard by Trump's announcement.

"I confess, I did not know who Pete Hegseth was until about 20 minutes ago," Smith told reporters.

"He does not seem to have much of a detailed background in [Department of Defense] policy. To the extent he’s worked on any of that stuff, it has been on veterans policy, not on DoD issues. So the lack of experience is concerning," Smith said.

“Now I have not heard what his plans are, so we will see what his plans are,” he added. “But it was surprising and is concerning, just given that lack of experience. You know, the Pentagon, biggest bureaucracy in the world. It’s a hard thing to run, so I think it’s going to be a challenge."

During an interview on the podcast "The Shawn Ryan Show" released last week, Hegseth denounced what he called diversity, equity and inclusion “woke s—” in the military and outlined a plan to “course correct it.”

“Well, first of all, you gotta fire — you’ve got to fire the chairman of the Joint Chiefs and obviously, you’re going to bring in a new secretary of defense. But any general that was involved — general, admiral, whatever that was involved — in any of the DEI woke s— has got to go,” Hegseth said.

During his first administration, Trump nominated James Mattis and later Mark Esper to lead the Defense Department.

Mattis resigned in December 2018 and suggested in a resignation letter that he and Trump differed in their views on “treating our allies with respect” and being “clear-eyed” about U.S. adversaries and competitors.

Trump fired Esper in 2020 after disagreements that included the use of active-duty troops to quell nationwide racial justice protests that year after the murder of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis.

Amid a flurry of picks for his second administration, Trump earlier Tuesday said he would nominate former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe to be CIA director.

On Monday, he tapped Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., as his pick for U.N. ambassador and said he would nominate Lee Zeldin, a former House Republican from New York, to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.

Sunday, he named immigration hard-liner Tom Homan as his “border czar.”

Trump's first major administration announcement came last week, when he said Susie Wiles, his campaign manager, would be White House chief of staff.

The Next Full Moon Will Be the Last of Four Consecutive Supermoons

The Next Full Moon is a Supermoon; the Beaver, Frost, Frosty, or Snow Moon; Kartik Purnima; Loy Krathong; the Bon Om Touk (”Boat Racing Festival”) Moon, the Tazaungdaing Festival Moon; and Ill Poya.

The next full Moon will be Friday afternoon, November 15, 2024, at 4:29 PM EST. This will be early Saturday morning from Kamchatka and Fiji Time eastwards to the International Date Line.

The Pleiades star cluster will appear near the full Moon. The Moon will appear full for about 3 days around this time, from a few hours before sunrise on Thursday morning to a few hours before sunrise on Sunday morning.

This full Moon will be the last of four consecutive supermoons, slightly closer and brighter than the first of the four in mid-August.

The Maine Farmers' Almanac began publishing Native American names for full Moons in the 1930s.

Over time these names have become widely known and used. According to this almanac, as the full Moon in November this is the Beaver Moon, the Frost or Frosty Moon, or the Snow Moon.

For the Beaver Moon, one interpretation is that mid-Fall was the time to set beaver traps before the swamps freeze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs.

Another interpretation suggests that the name Beaver Moon came from how active the beavers are in this season as they prepare for winter.

The Frost, Frosty, or Snow Moon names come from the frosts and early snows that begin this time of year, particularly in northeastern North America.

This is Kartik Purnima (the full Moon of the Hindu lunar month of Kartik) and is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs (each for different reasons).

In Thailand and nearby countries this full Moon is Loy Krathong, a festival that includes decorating baskets and floating them on a river.

CIA Official Arrested Abroad for Leaking Secret Documents on Israel’s Military Plans

On Wednesday federal prosecutors have revealed an arrest, with the NY Times reporting that “The man, Asif W. Rahman, was indicted last week in federal court in Virginia with two counts of willful retention and transmission of national defense information.” He had worked for the US government overseas, and is being charged with two counts of violating the Espionage Act. The Times has followed with an update identifying him as a CIA official.

Rahman was apprehended by the FBI in Cambodia on Tuesday, and has been brought to federal court in Guam where he’ll get charged in the case.

Artemis II Orion Spacecraft Undergoes Testing

Teams lifted NASA’s Orion spacecraft for the Artemis II test flight out of the Final Assembly and System Testing cell and moved it to the altitude chamber to complete further testing on Nov. 6 inside the Neil A. Armstrong Operations and Checkout building at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Engineers returned the spacecraft to the altitude chamber, which simulates deep space vacuum conditions, to complete the remaining test requirements and provide additional data to augment data gained during testing earlier this summer.

The Artemis II test flight will be NASA’s first mission with crew under the Artemis campaign, sending NASA astronauts Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Reid Wiseman, as well as CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen, on a 10-day journey around the Moon and back.

NASA James Webb Telescope Revelations Challenge Theory of Gravity

Observations of the early universe made by NASA's flagship James Webb Space Telescope are challenging the traditional theory of gravity and how the first galaxies formed.

This is the conclusion of a new study by astrophysicist Stacy McGaugh—of Ohio's Case Western Reserve University—and his colleagues.

According to the team, the standard model of early galaxy formation predicted that, staring at the distant (and therefore, given how light takes time to travel, young) universe, Webb should have seen only dim signals from small and primitive galaxies 13 billion years ago, when the universe was less than half-a-billion years old.

"The expectation was that every big galaxy we see in the nearby universe would have started from these itty-bitty pieces," McGaugh said in a statement.

What astronomers have observed instead, however, is that these early galaxies are large and bright—meaning something is amiss in our understanding of the universe's evolution.

The largest and most powerful space telescope ever built, Webb's infrared instruments are capable of seeing objects so distant the light from them takes up to 13.5 billion years to reach us, effectively providing a window back into the infancy of the universe.

This has allowed us to see, for the first time, how the first stars and galaxies formed — and test the hypothesis that invisible "dark matter" helped normal matter clump together bit by bit, building up increasingly large structures until galaxies formed.

"Astronomers invented dark matter to explain how you get from a very smooth early universe to big galaxies with lots of empty space between them that we see today," said McGaugh.

However, he said: "What the theory of dark matter predicted is not what we see."

The large, bright signals that Webb keeps seeing, even as it looks deeper and deeper into the universe's past, are, however, compatible with another theory: Modified Newtonian Dynamics, or "MOND", for short.

"If MOND is indeed the correct theory—the status we usually confer to theories that get so many a priori predictions right—then the broader implications are enormous," McGaugh told Newsweek.

"For one, it implies that we have been barking up the wrong tree with dark matter. The reason we haven't detected dark matter in the laboratory despite decades of dedicated searches is because it is not there."

"The discrepancies we attribute to invisible dark matter are in fact due to a change in the force law. That in turn implies that our theory of gravity is incomplete."

Filling in these potential gaps, McGaugh added, will require a "major change in thinking" of the likes physics hasn't seen since the development of quantum mechanics a century ago.

The standard cosmological model invokes invisible dark matter to explain why galaxies appear to spin faster than they should based on what they can be seen to contain.

In MOND, meanwhile, this discrepancy is explained away by suggesting that Newton's law of gravity breaks down in situations where the pull of gravity is very weak—such as, for example, in the outer regions of galaxies.

Models suggest that in a MOND universe, cosmic structures like burgeoning galaxies would be built up much faster—first expanding outward with the rest of the universe, before collapsing in on itself under a stronger force of gravity to form a galaxy.

This would produce the same large and bright structures seen now by Webb, proponents of MOND first argued more than 25 years ago.

"The bottom line is: 'I told you so'," said McGaugh. He added: "I was raised to think that saying that was rude, but that's the whole point of the scientific method: make predictions and then check which come true."

'I weigh the same': NASA astronaut Suni Williams refutes tabloid health claims

Don't believe the tabloids: NASA astronaut Suni Williams says she's doing just fine aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Last week, media outlets such as The Daily Mail and The New York Post published stories speculating that Williams' health may be deteriorating in Earth orbit, citing an outside doctor's opinion that she looks "gaunt" in some recent photos.

NASA officials quickly refuted those claims, saying Williams and the other three agency astronauts currently living on the ISS are in good health.

And now, Williams herself has delivered the same message.

"I'm the same weight that I was when I got up here," Williams said today (Nov. 12) in a video interview from the ISS, in response to a question from the New England Sports Network.

Williams said she's been working out assiduously on the orbiting lab, as all astronauts do to stave off the muscle wasting and loss in bone density that can come with long-duration exposure to microgravity.

She's been riding an exercise bike, running on a treadmill and lifting weights on the ISS, and her body has changed as a result.

"I could definitely tell that weightlifting, which is not something that I do all the time, has definitely changed me. My thighs are a little bit bigger, my butt is a little bit bigger," Williams said.

But, she stressed, "I weigh the same."

Williams arrived at the ISS on June 6 with fellow NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore, on the first-ever crewed mission of Boeing's Starliner capsule.

That mission, known as Crew Flight Test (CFT), was supposed to last just 10 days or so.

However, Starliner experienced thruster issues on its way to the orbiting lab.

NASA extended CFT to study the problem in detail and ultimately decided to bring Starliner home without anyone on board, which happened on Sept. 6.

Williams and Wilmore will come back to Earth in February 2025 with the two astronauts of SpaceX's Crew-9 mission, who arrived in late September.

Williams commands the orbiting lab's Expedition 72.

The other members of the mission currently living on the ISS are Wilmore, fellow NASA astronauts Don Pettit and Nick Hague, and Russian cosmonauts Aleksandr Gorbunov, Aleksey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner.

The fire broke out just after noon on November 7, along Santa Lucia Canyon Road, just north of the Lompoc federal prison.

It burned 130 acres and prompted the evacuation of the south end of Vandenberg Village. There was no reported damage to any homes or other structures.

Santa Barbara County Fire officials told KSBY News on Tuesday that the fire was caused by sparks from a trailer that became disconnected from the vehicle that was towing it.

Fire department officials say all equipment and personnel assigned to the fire have been released.

The Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs has issued a damning report revealing theU.S. State Department’s promotion of atheism abroad in the name of “religious freedom.” At the culmination of a two-year congressional investigation into the State Department’sfunding of “ideologically charged foreign aid projects overseas,” Chairman Michael T. McCaul wrote in a summary report Wednesday that thecurrent administration has failedto be an effective steward of the cause of religious freedom abroad, preferring instead to support atheism.

McCaul and his team obtained “information theDepartment of State tried to keep hidden,” he notes, showing thatfunding for religious freedom initiatives has been “diverted from religious minoritiesaround the globe to support agnostics’ and atheists’ right to disbelieve.” This choice has involvedsnubbing“the truly imperiled faithful” to promote the worldview of nonbelievers.

In his report, McCaul cites the example ofa 2021 “notice of funding opportunity” for $500,000issued by the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor. The notice specifically solicited proposals forprograms that would “promote and defend religious freedom inclusive of atheist, humanist, non-practicing and non-affiliated individuals.”

It also indicated toparticipating NGOsthat the proposed (taxpayer-funded) programs shouldincrease the capacity of atheists and humaniststo “form” and “strengthen” their “networks” in South Asia.

According to McCaul and his team, such a notice translates as: “We want you all to come up with ideas forexpanding the presence and influence of atheists overseas.” The report is quick to note that the State Department’spromotion of atheism abroad does not arise in responseto a situation where nonreligious people were being persecuted, but seems to be simply an ideological choice to promote non-belief.

In countries such as Nepal and Sri Lanka, the text observes, certainChristians and Muslims have recently faced persecution, whereas atheists or humanists have been left in peace. Yet theState Department “deliberately chose to spurn the religious groupsmost in need of assistance in the relevant countries and devote funds instead to a pet project, one thatappears to have been tailored for the grantee.”

Moreover, there were no countervailing religious freedom grantsto support persecuted Christians and Muslims in Nepal and Sri Lanka.These groups were simply ignored.Official grant documents, some of which were obtained by subpoena, proposed “translating and disseminating various humanist content (declarations, textbooks, guides, etc.) into the relevant national and local languages.”

Other documentsmade clear that the grant targeted atheists and humanists as the preferred recipients, noting: “Applicants will be required to provide information on their humanist activism [and] their past and current affiliation with non-religious groups.”

Turning theconcept of religious freedom on its head, the training program implemented in Nepalpromoted freedom of nonbeliefbut suggested that a so-called “freedom of religious belief” does not entail manifestations of faith such as Christian priests’ distribution of the Eucharist.

It also asserted that whena Christian adoption agency, acting on sincerely held religious convictions,denies services to same-sex couples, it violates human rights, a stance that contradicts U.S. policy. (All of these were put in from Day one when Obama got in. the State Department is still persecuting countries that don’t allow gay, bi-sexuals, trans, sex with animals etc. All of Obama’s policies and people in the State Dept. need to removed.)

Related training programs focused on recruiting forantireligious organizations and converting people into active “humanists,” McCaul notes. In the Nepal case, the State Department grant from U.S. taxpayer money wasawarded to Humanists International, an anti-Christian group whoseCEO has statedthat people should be ashamed to be associated with the Catholic Church and that his job is “to combat the Vatican policies and to push against them.”

We observe“an elite, professional classthat has no qualms about using taxpayer money to export its own secular agenda overseas, attempting to keep the details from being known outside the Department,” McCaul writes, while calling onCongress to put an immediate halt to this new model of atheistic proselytism.

Pandora Papers pulling back the curtain on South Dakota trusts

Reports from a coordinated, global investigation of leaked documents are revealing South Dakota's role as a growing destination for wealthy and powerful people to store millions of dollars in secretive trust funds.

The reports reveal some of the names attached to the money, and they include government officials and business leaders from foreign countries linked to accusations of human rights, labor and environmental abuses.

The information is revealed in millions of documents — known as the Pandora Papers — leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and reported on by the Washington Post and other partners.

"South Dakota now rivals notoriously opaque jurisdictions in Europe and the Caribbean in financial secrecy. Tens of billions of dollars from outside the United States are now sheltered by trust companies in Sioux Falls, some of it tied to people and companies accused of human rights abuses and other wrongdoing," the Post wrote in the first article of its multi-part series.

South Dakota has a trust task force meant to maintain the state's “stature as the premier trust jurisdiction in the United States" that has been backed by governors and legislators since it was created by Gov. Bill Janklow in 1997, SDPB has reported.

"Year after year in South Dakota, state lawmakers have approved legislation drafted by trust industry insiders, providing more and more protections and other benefits for trust customers in the U.S. and abroad. Customer assets in South Dakota trusts have more than quadrupled over the past decade to $360 billion," the ICIJ reported.

The ICIJ says the U.S. gained more than 200 new trusts between 2000 and 2019 with 81 of them — or nearly 50% — being registered in South Dakota. Some of those trusts were opened in response to other countries improving financial transparency and regulating their trust industry.

The ICIJ's and Washington Post's reporting focuses on two Sioux-Falls based trusts: Trident Trust, an international company that opened its Sioux Falls office in 2014, and the South Dakota Trust Co., created by a founding member of Janklow's task force in 2002.

Details from the Washington Post and ICIJ investigations include:

The family of Ecuadorian brothers William and Roberto Isaias created trusts with South Dakota Trust Co. in 2012, soon after the brothers were convicted of embezzling government bailout money for their failed bank. Their conviction was later overturned.

Family members of Carlos Morales Troncoso, the former vice president of the Dominican Republican, opened several trusts with Trident in 2019 that contain $14 million in personal wealth and shares of a sugar company. The company is "accused of human rights and labor abuses, including illegally bulldozing houses of impoverished families to expand plantations."

Federico Kong Vielman, a powerful businessman from Guatemala, moved $13.5 million to Trident 2016. His family is linked to a former dictator and gifted free hotel stays to a former Guatemalan president, likely in exchange for "political favors." U.S. labor officials have accused his family's palm oil company of underpaying workers and exposing them to toxic chemicals. U.S. environmental authorities later found the company released pollutants into a river and the issue was resolved in an arbitration panel.

Guillermo Lasso, president of Ecuador, opened two new trusts with Trident in 2017 after his country made it illegal for public officials to store assets in tax havens and as media reports questioned his interests in a bank in Panama.

José “Pepe” Douer Ambar, a businessman from Colombia, had a trust with Trident. He settled a case with the U.S. government after an investigation found he was involved with "a vast enterprise to sell drugs in the United States and launder the proceeds."

Horst Happel, a business leader from Brazil, created a trust with Trident in 2018. Happel settled a case with the Brazilian government after allegedly colluding to underpay local farmers. He also settled a case with the U.S. government after he allegedly violated limits on futures trading.

Christopher Pallanck was formerly married to Cleopatra Cameron, an oil heiress from California who put millions in a Trident trust. Pallanck was granted full custody of their children and Cameron was ordered to pay child support. Trident successfully argued to the South Dakota Supreme Court in a 2017 case that it didn't need to pay out the child support, SDPB previously reported.

"The documents do not include details on what Trident might have known at the time about the clients or their sources of wealth, and Trident did not respond to inquiries about specific cases," the Post reported.

Trident told the Post it complies with all regulations and cooperates with authorities. South Dakota Trust Co. declined to comment on its individual clients but told the Post it exceeds review standards by screening clients for criminal activity and legal or regulatory concerns.

Bret Afdahl, director of the South Dakota Division of Banking, told the Post that the state audits trust companies and can penalize firms that do not meet standards, such as confirming the identities of all customers. He said foreign clients and assets receive extra scrutiny.

The trust industry has escaped federal legislative reform focused on banks and shell companies, the Post reported. Meanwhile, regulations that do exist are vague or have loopholes.

Financial experts told the Post that the industry needs much more oversight and should not only focus on clients convicted of crimes, but those connected to credible accusations of crime, corruption and human rights abuses.

Actor Dick Van Dyke, who turns 99 next month, suggested he would happily not be around to see the next four years under President-elect Donald Trump’s second term in the White House.

While some celebrities threaten to leave the United States in response to the 2024 presidential election results,Van Dyke’s Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) has taken an even more radical turn, with the actor saying he is grateful he won’t be alive to experience the 45th president’s second term. (I doubt God will give him his wish.)

“Fortunately, I won’t be around to experience the four years,” the Mary Poppins star said in response to a reporter who asked, “Do you think Donald Trump is capable of making America great again?” according to a report by Daily Mail.

After being asked, “Does the future look bright for America?” Van Dyke replied, “I hope you’re right,” while his wife reacted by saying, “Oh man.”

Notably, the actor endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in an Election Eve Instagram post in which hebizarrely likened the 2024 election and today’s political climate to the U.S. Civil Rights Movementby reading a speech he had originally delivered at an event with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on May 31, 1964.

After concluding the reiteration of his 1964 speech, Van Dyke said, “A lot has happened” since 1964, before claiming it is “not so much as Martin Luther dreamed of, but it’s a start.”

While Van Dyke did not mention Harris or Trump by name in his Instagram video, the actor made his endorsement clear by writing “VOTE!!! @kamalaharris @vp @kamalahq” in the caption of his post.

The next day, Trump won the 2024 presidential election against Harris in a landslide victory with 312 of the Electoral College vote, winning all seven of this year’s swing states, as well as the popular vote, outperforming his own election results from 2016, when he won 304 of the Electoral College vote against Hillary Clinton.

Trump is also the first president in more than 130 years — and the second in U.S. history — to win a non-consecutive second term.

The 45th and soon-to-be 47th president’s sweeping victory also came after he survived two assassination attempts on his life within the span of two months — the first of which transpired on July 13 when Trump was struck in the ear with a bullet while delivering remarks at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

President-elect Donald Trump will sign an executive order within his first week of office to move U.S. Space Command headquarters to Alabama, clearing the way for construction to start as soon as next year, according to Alabama congressman Mike Rogers.

Space Command has been based in Colorado at Peterson Space Force Base since its inception in 2019, but the decision on a forever home has been the subject of a years-long debate.

The Biden administration in 2023 reversed a decision Trump made in his last days in office to move the command’s permanent headquarters to Huntsville, Alabama.

“I've told y'all since Biden made that crooked decision, it wasn't going to work.

As you know, on the [House] Armed Services Committee, I put a hold on any money being spent in Colorado Springs after President Biden came in and stole that mission away, and I told everybody then that Colorado Springs will not be the future location of Space Command, it will be Huntsville, Alabama, who won at fair and square,” Rogers said during an interview on Alabama radio station FM Talk 106.5 that aired on Monday.

The 2024 defense policy bill put a freeze on SPACECOM headquarters construction until two government watchdog agencies evaluate Biden’s decision to keep it in Colorado.

The two investigations will wrap up in December or January, Rogers said, and would have “reversed the president's decision anyway.”

“It's going to be a big point now because President Trump's already announced it, and I think you'll see in the first week that he's in office, he'll sign an executive order reversing Biden's directive.

And we will start construction next year in Huntsville,” Rogers said.

Biden officials have argued that the command should stay in Colorado to maintain readiness and prevent the loss of civilian workers, who make up 60 percent of its workforce.

But Rogers said the new Trump administration is unlikely to see any pushback from Democrats on HASC.

“I have every confidence that if for some reason we didn't take control of the House, [HASC ranking member] Adam Smith and the Democrats on the House Armed Services Committee would do nothing to try to interfere with the U.S. Space Command being constructed in Huntsville," Rogers said.

As the Air Force Medical Service continues its transformation to meet the evolving needs of Airmen and Guardians, Lt. Gen. John J. DeGoes, the U.S. Air Force and Space Force surgeon general, outlined his vision for implementing four AFMS strategic imperatives to ensure health and medical readiness.

DeGoes, who became the Air Force’s 25th surgeon general July 31, said addressing the complex challenges of future warfare requires an expansive overhaul of the AFMS and the training of service members within the system.

1. Deliver DAF integrated operational capabilities

Integrating tailored medical capabilities into operational units

Unquestionably, the foremost priority is providing operationally relevant medical capabilities that are fully integrated into units of action from day one.

Medics will train, certify, and deploy together while providing combat medical support to the installation to maximize home station readiness.

“Our future challenges require a different approach,” DeGoes said. “It’s going to require a different kind of organizing, training, and equipping.

It necessitates training together, knowing the people you’re going to serve. More of the mission for the future also involves returning folks to duty.”

As the Department of the Air Force continues to prepare for Great Power Competition, medics have to be adaptive, agile and innovative in any given scenario, especially in an environment that may be contested, where manpower and additional resources may be limited.

“We have to be more hardened, more resilient,” DeGoes explained. “If the base that we’re at is not a sanctuary, we need to be equipped and prepared to use our capabilities and have the confidence to carry out the mission.”

Support for active-duty members and families

Family readiness is a critical component of force readiness, according to DeGoes.

He emphasized the AFMS must transform into a people-centric operation - one that supports not only the service member deployed to the battlefield, but also their family at home.

“You can’t be completely ready as an Airman or Guardian if your family is not ready and taken care of,” DeGoes explained.

“Once we have that combat mission, families and other active-duty members remaining at installation will still have our support.”

2. Joint force readiness support

Enhancing joint patient movement capability, capacity, interoperability, and casualty care

Unified efforts to strategically align AFMS medical forces with the operational Air Force, Space Force, and joint force remain vital to generating readiness, particularly for emergency rapid responses.

In recent years, the Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency Joint Trauma System developed Tactical Combat Casualty Care courses for evidence-based training, life-saving techniques, and strategies to provide top-tier battlefield trauma care across the services.

Emphasis on continued innovations in various medical components, including Medic-X training, expeditionary medical support, en route patient care, aeromedical evacuation, and Critical Care Air Transport Teams will enable medical capabilities to sustain patient movement and casualty care in a complex, contested environment.

Fanone, 44, has indeed been extremely vocal about his experiences at the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, and the injuries he allegedly suffered.

Fanone is part of a quartet of celebrity cops juicing every second of their involvement in the four-hour disturbance nearly two years ago, earning lucrative book deals, congressional awards, and cable news gigs in the process.

Fanone has lots to say in his memoir - heavily sprinkled with obscenities - while ranting about Donald Trump and his supporters.

(Fanone begins with a brazen lie that Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died of “wounds” sustained on January 6.)

In December 2022, he told Washington Post reporter Peter Hermann that he had been “ostracized for being outspoken about the Capitol riot” by those who want to “play down the violence that day.”

He lamented that members of the MPD’s Special Operations Division had called him “a piece of sh-t,” after he told everyone that he suffered a heart attack, a concussion and a traumatic brain injury during the riot.

Fanone told the Post he’d left the police force not long after he’d testified to Congress in July 2021.

He published his book, “Hold the Line: The Insurrection and One Cop’s Battle for America’s Soul,” and went on tour with a left-wing J6 activist group called “Courage For America.”

The group - run by Zac Petkanas, a Democratic strategist who previously worked for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and former Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) - ”supports abortion, LGBT interests, liberal immigration-expansion policies, and increased government spending,” according to Influence Watch.

Courage For America’s main goal was to “Make sure the MAGA agenda doesn’t get passed without strenuous opposition.”

Eventually, the J6 grifts wound down and Fanone had trouble finding another source of income.

“When he came back, he’d tried to get a job—at Walmart, at Costco, at Cabela’s—and nothing came through,” the Post reported.

“No one gives you a reason, but it’s pretty obvious,” Fanone said.

That reason, according to the Post is “his belief that half the country thinks he’s a traitor.”

Fanone now runs a private security business.

“We need to protect folks who want to come forward,” said Rep. Burchett.

“Our government spends tens of millions of dollars on looking into UAPs, yet when someone wants to bring something forward, members of our government want to shut it down.

People who want to bring the truth to light should be protected.”

The UAP Whistleblower Protection Act would provide protections to whistleblowers who bring attention to federal funding that is being used to study UAPs.

This bill was introduced the day before the House Committee on Oversight is set to hold a joint subcommittee hearing on UAPs.

BACKGROUND:

Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02), along with several bipartisan members of Congress, pushed for a hearing on UAPswhich was held by the House Oversight Subcommittee on National Security, the Border, and Foreign Affairs on July 26, 2023. The hearing featured testimony from three witnesses:

Some members of the UAP Caucus sent a letter to the Inspector General of the Intelligence Community asking for follow-up information regarding David Grusch’s testimony in the recent hearing on UAPs.

Congressman Burchett and other members of the UAP Caucus introduced the UAP Transparency Act, which would require the president of the United States to direct all federal agencies and departments to make all documents relating to UAPs available to the public within 270 days.

No matter how bad you think Covid policies were, they were intended to be worse.

Consider the vaccine passports alone. Six cities were locked down to include only the vaccinated in public indoor places. They were New York City, Boston, Chicago, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and Seattle. The plan was to enforce this with a vaccine passport. It broke. Once the news leaked that the shot didn’t stop infection or transmission, the planners lost public support and the scheme collapsed.

It was undoubtedly planned to be permanent and nationwide if not worldwide. Instead, the scheme had to be dialed back.

Features of the CDC’s edicts did incredible damage. It imposed the rent moratorium. It decreed the ridiculous “six feet of distance” and mask mandates. It forced Plexiglas as the interface for commercial transactions. It implied that mail-in balloting must be the norm, which probably flipped the election. It delayed the reopening as long as possible. It was sadistic.

Even with all that, worse was planned. On July 26, 2020, with the George Floyd riots having finally settled down, the CDC issued a plan for establishing nationwide quarantine camps. People were to be isolated, given only food and some cleaning supplies. They would be banned from participating in any religious services. The plan included contingencies for preventing suicide. There were no provisions made for any legal appeals or even the right to legal counsel.

The plan’s authors were unnamed but included 26 footnotes. It was completely official. The document was only removed on about March 26, 2023. During the entire intervening time, the plan survived on the CDC’s public site with little to no public notice or controversy.

It was called “Interim Operational Considerations for Implementing the Shielding Approach to Prevent COVID-19 Infections in Humanitarian Settings.”

“This document presents considerations from the perspective of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) for implementing the shielding approach in humanitarian settings as outlined in guidance documents focused on camps, displaced populations and low-resource settings. This approach has never been documented and has raised questions and concerns among humanitarian partners who support response activities in these settings. The purpose of this document is to highlight potential implementation challenges of the shielding approach from CDC’s perspective and guide thinking around implementation in the absence of empirical data. Considerations are based on current evidence known about the transmission and severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and may need to be revised as more information becomes available.”

By absence of empirical data, the meaning is: nothing like this has ever been tried. The point of the document was to map out how it could be possible and alert authorities to possible pitfalls to be avoided.

The US president-elect has promised to end wars in the Middle East, but experts believe it will be no easy task

Donald Trump's landslide victory has sent shockwaves through liberal circles in the US and Europe, but in many countries of the Middle East, his comeback has brought a glimpse of hope that wars could soon be over, economies restored, and stability returned.

Prior to winning the presidential race, the Republican candidate promised to end the war in Gaza. He vowed to bring the 101 hostages back, put a halt to the hostilities in Lebanon, and ensure that Iran and its proxies would not pose a threat to the region. When he returns to the White House, he will need to live up to the expectations.

Expanding the peace camp

That, however, will be no easy task. Abdullah Al-Junaid, a Bahrain-based political analyst specializing in the geopolitics of the Middle East and the Gulf, suggests Trump will need to pull many strings in Jerusalem to make Israel end the hostilities.

“Prime Minister Netanyahu will want a lot from Trump in exchange for agreeing to an end of Israel’s wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Revisiting the West Bank annexation could be one; securing security arrangements for Israel in Gaza and Lebanon could be another”.

In 2020, during his first term in office, Trump proposed the so-called Deal of the Century, a peace plan that aimed to resolve the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

According to that initiative, which was rejected by the Palestinians and some conservative circles in Israel, Palestinians would be given an independent state, which would not include Jerusalem as its capital. Nor would it have access to the Jordan Valley, essential for their economy, or some key towns and cities.

The plan never came to fruition, with Trump leaving office in 2021. But with his return to power, it might be revived. Another initiative that could be put back on the table is the expansion of the so-called peace camp, and the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Arab nations, most crucially Saudi Arabia.

The Biden administration has failed to produce any tangible results in this regard, but with Trump in power Netanyahu is hoping the tide might turn.

Al-Junaid says it will be a huge challenge.

“At the moment, Israel isn’t ready to meet the Saudis' most fundamental demand of a two-state solution, and Trump can’t pressure Netanyahu or any other Israeli prime minister into a deal. That doesn’t mean that principals can’t be agreed, but for that to happen, regional stability needs to be viewed as a regional issue first, and until it’s treated as such, nothing will work”.

Mohammed Marandi, a Tehran university professor and political analyst, agrees with the assessment that it would be hard to expand the peace camp to other Arab and Muslim nations.

According to a recent poll conducted in 16 Arab countries, including those that do have relations with Israel, the popularity of the Jewish state has been dealt a severe blow as a result of its aggression in Gaza. Marandi says this trend has only been intensified by the war in Lebanon and the actions of the IDF in the West Bank.

“Saudi Arabia and other countries in the region like Turkey, Jordan, Egypt and the Emirates, are all being severely criticized by their own people and people across the region because they are seen as either indifferent towards the Palestinians and the Lebanese, or as collaborating with the Israeli regime,” Marandi argued.

Durham University astrophysicists produce model to calculate probability of intelligent alien life

Astrophysicists have developed a new theoretical model that could be used to estimate how likely it is for intelligent alien life to emerge in our universe.

In the 1960s, American astronomer Dr Frank Drake came up with an equation to calculate the number of detectable extra-terrestrial civilisations in the Milky Way galaxy.

More than 60 years on, researchers led by Durham University’s Institute for Computational Cosmology have produced a new model based on the conditions created by the acceleration of the universe’s expansion and the amount of stars formed instead.

It is thought that this expansion is being driven by a mysterious form of energy called dark energy that permeates space and makes up over two thirds of the universe.

This new research has calculated the fraction of ordinary matter converted into stars over the entire history of the universe, for different dark energy densities.

The model predicts this fraction would be approximately 27% in a universe that is most efficient at forming stars, compared to 23% in our universe.

The new model could allow scientists to understand the effects of differing densities of dark energy on the formation of structures in the universe and the conditions for life to develop in the cosmos.

The research also involved scientists at the University of Edinburgh and the Université de Genève.

Their findings are published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Lead researcher Dr Daniele Sorini, in the Institute for Computational Cosmology, Durham University, said: "Understanding dark energy and the impact on our Universe is one of the biggest challenges in cosmology and fundamental physics.

"The parameters that govern our universe, including the density of dark energy, could explain our own existence.

"Surprisingly, though, we found that even a significantly higher dark energy density would still be compatible with life, suggesting we may not live in the most likely of universes."

At present, there is no satisfactory explanation of what dark energy is and of its abundance in the universe.

Dark energy makes the universe expand faster, balancing gravity’s pull creating a universe where both expansion and structure formation are possible.

However, for life to develop, there would need to be regions where matter can clump together to form stars and planets, and it would need to remain stable for billions of years to allow life to evolve.

Since stars are a precondition for the emergence of life as we know it, this new calculation could be used to estimate the probability of generating intelligent life in our universe, and in a multiverse scenario of hypothetical different universes.

Crucially, the research suggests that the astrophysics of star formation and the evolution of the large-scale structure of the universe combine in a subtle way to determine the optimal value of the dark energy density needed for the generation of intelligent life.

The new research does not attempt to calculate the absolute number of observers (i.e. intelligent life) in the universe but instead considers the relative probability of a randomly chosen observer inhabiting a universe with particular properties.

It concludes that a typical observer would expect to experience a substantially larger density of dark energy than is seen in our own universe – suggesting the ingredients it possesses make it a rare and unusual case in the multiverse.

Professor Lucas Lombriser, Université de Genève and co-author of the study, added:

"It will be exciting to employ the model to explore the emergence of life across different universes and see whether some fundamental questions we ask ourselves about our own universe must be reinterpreted."
