AZ Supreme Court denies ballot curing deadline extension

The deadline was set for 5 p.m. Sunday

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Arizona Supreme Court denied an emergency petition to extend the ballot curing deadline in the state.

The Court said the requested extension is unnecessary based on information from the Secretary of State’s website.

The ACLU and LULAC claimed that county recorders had not begun the signature verification and curing process for thousands of remaining ballots, but that was debunked.

The Court collected information from eight counties, including Maricopa County. In a press release, the Court said no county recorder said they can’t comply with the 5 p.m. Sunday deadline.

Maricopa County specifically told the Court: “Early ballot ‘processing’ does not mean signatureCourtfication. And the fact of the matter is, the Maricopa County Recorder finished signature verification of the last remaining early ballot affidavit signatures on the morning of Fri., Nov. 8, 2024.”

The ACLU of Arizona and Campaign Legal Center filed an emergency petition on Saturday to the Arizona Supreme Court to extend the deadline.

WASHINGTON—Despite calls from some liberal activists for Justice Sonia Sotomayor to step down while Democrats can fill her seat before Inauguration Day,she has no plans to retire from the Supreme Court, people close to the justice said.

“This is no time to lose her important voice on the court. She just turned 70 and takes better care of herself than anyone I know,” said one person close to the justice, suggesting that progressives turn their attention to other ways of safeguarding the Constitution after President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

Sotomayor, appointed in 2009 by then President Barack Obama, is the senior member of the court’s liberal minority, which by custom makes her its leader. Outnumbered by six conservatives, including three appointed by Trump during his first term, the liberals have increasingly been reduced to dissenting opinions that argue the majority has made grave errors on matters from abortion rights to presidential power.

Sotomayor, who has written a bestselling memoir and children’s books, appeared on “Sesame Street,” and championed civics education, is among the better-known justices. In February, a Marquette Law School pollfound that while many Americans were unfamiliar with the court’s membership, Sotomayor was viewed more favorably than any other justice.

“This would probably be a good day for Sotomayor to retire,” David Dayen, executive editor of the liberal American Prospect magazine, wrote the day after the election on social media. The same day, the former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan, noting the justice has had Type 1 diabetes since childhood, resurfaced his April op-ed suggesting that it was time for Sotomayor to go.

Animating the discussion of Sotomayor—and of potential retirements by conservative justices of similar age—is Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death at age 87. Ginsburg had resisted calls from liberals to step down in the early 2010s while Obama and the Democrats held appointment power. Her death in September 2020 allowed Trump to solidify the court’s conservative majority by appointing Justice Amy Coney Barrett shortly before Democrats captured both the White House and Senate.

Fears of further diminution of the liberal minority led some on the left to pressure Justice Stephen Breyer to step down soon after President Biden and Senate Democrats took over in 2021, with one group sending a billboard truck to Capitol Hill bearing the message, “Breyer, Retire.” He stepped down in 2022 at age 83, allowing Biden to replace him with Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, was among the first prominent legal progressives to call on Ginsburg to retire during the Obama presidency, with a March 2014 op-ed in the Los Angeles Times.

Chemerinsky said Saturday that conditions are different now.

“It is far more uncertain that the Democrats could confirm a successor than in summer 2014,” he said. “And Sotomayor is 70,” while Ginsburg was 81 when he urged her to step down.

Some conservatives, equally cognizant that political winds and health conditions can change rapidly, have suggested that the senior stalwarts of the court’s right wing, Justices Clarence Thomas, 76, and Samuel Alito, 74, might retire before the 2026 midterm elections.

“Justice Sam Alito is gleefully packing up his chambers,” Mike Davis, a conservative legal activist close to Trump, said on social media after Tuesday’s election.

Others find such talk impolitic. Treating Thomas and Alito “like meat that has reached its expiration date is unwise, uninformed, and, frankly, just crass,” Leonard Leo, a leader of the Federalist Society and onetime judicial adviser to Trump, said Friday.Neither justice has publicly indicated an interest in retirement.

He won it bigly. President-elect Donald Trump has nabbed the highest raw count of the popular vote of any Republican presidential hopeful ever, according to projections of the 2024 election. As of Sunday morning, Trump clinched 74,650,000 popular votes, eclipsing his prior record of 74,224,000 votes in the 2020 election, per the Associated Press. At the moment, that puts the incoming president ahead of Vice President Kamala Harris’ 70.9 million votes — though there is still a large swath of votes uncounted, including in California which has an estimated 66% of the vote tabulated. Other states, including Alaska, Arizona, Maryland, Oregon and Utah still have outstanding votes.

Stephen Richer - the Maricopa County recorder in charge of elections has admitted under oath that he intended to make an Arizona Republican candidate for U.S. Senator's (Kari Lake's) life "Hell," appeared (from AZ) at a California State Bar court disbarment proceeding - and testified against - John Eastman, a renowned Constitutional scholar - experienced in appearances and arguments before the U.S. Supreme Court on Constitutional matters, and one of Donald Trump's former lawyers, and sued Kari Lake and others for defamation (over past election statements).

If reports are true,nore than 140,000 of Arizona ballots indicate a vote for PDJT and, in the same ballot, a vote for the Democrat opponent of Kari Lake.

That is counter-intuitive because if Lake's Democrat opponent wins, the Republican senators' lead in the U.S. Senate is lessened by one, which could make PDJT's ability to get confirmations of Cabinet and judicial appointments more difficult and could stall and hamstring legislation necessary to secure the border and drain the swamp (in a way that cannot be overturned by Executive Orders of a future President).

Someone sent me this and wished to stay anonymous… but urged me to look into it…

• On October 28, 2024, a Township meeting occurred in Michigan.

“If you see a lot of trucks coming onto the base, that’s what it is… and it’s nothing to get scared about…

They’re staging for “emergency situations” in any of these six counties.”

• I did some digging and the airport they are discussing is the Wurtsmith Air Force Base, which is a decommissioned United States Air Force base in Iosco County, Michigan.

• Why is FEMA staging emergency equipment in areas not currently experiencing any kind of emergency?

Anthony Weiner mulls a City Council run in lower Manhattan

The scandal-scarred former congressman mused about a possible run on his radio show on Saturday.

Former Rep. Anthony Weiner is thinking about mounting another political comeback attempt – this time in the New York City Council.

Speaking during his weekly radio show on 77WABC Saturday afternoon, Weiner said he’s considering entering the race for term-limited Council Member Carlina Rivera’s seat in lower Manhattan. While he said he’s yet to make up his mind, it’s a decision he’s strongly considering – particularly in wake of the presidential election.

“I’m thinking about it. I’m wrestling with it,” Weiner said, pointing to what he described as a myriad of quality of life issues in his district and the city at large. “I love doing this job on the radio, but I want to be of service.”

The Council District 2 Democratic primary race is already competitive. It includes Assembly Member Harvey Epstein (recently parodied on Saturday Night Live for his name), Manhattan Community Board 3 Chair Andrea Gordillo and Community Board 3 Vice Chair and nonprofit leader Sarah Batchu. Fundraising is also well underway – all three candidates have already raised more than $50,000 for their campaigns. Batchu currently leads with roughly $60,000 raised.

Even by New York standards, Weiner’s career has seen a remarkable amount of scandal. He’s been out of office since 2011, when he resigned amid a sexting scandal that involved several women including a minor. He attempted a comeback run for mayor in 2013 which was derailed by yet another sexting scandal. In 2017, he was sentenced to 21 months in prison for sexting a minor. A federal search of Weiner’s laptop in connection to the sexting investigation unearthed emails that furthered a federal probe into then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton via Weiner’s ex-wife and Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

Weiner acknowledged that all together, while there’s a number of reasons not to run, he feels Democrats are not doing a good enough job tackling problems like crime, homelessness, and the housing shortage.

“The things in my past, the things about my addiction, the things about my acting out, the things about my background – it’s a lot, it’s a lot,” he said. “But we’re at a moment that we Democrats, we seem like we come into knife fights carrying library books all the time.”

A mentee of Chuck Schumer, Weiner served in the New York City Council from 1992 to 1998 before succeeding Schumer in Congress. As of early October, he hadn’t opened a campaign account for the seat.

“Anyone who wants to run should run for sure,” Epstein said when asked about Weiner’s interest. “That is the Democratic process.”

“Families in Lower Manhattan deserve better than failed New York and Washington politicians using our moment of need for their own political comeback,” Gordillo said in a statement. “With the threats of the next Trump presidency here, we need fierce, progressive leadership to stand up for our values and protect our community.”

$23M White House replica mansion in California sells

A mansion in California that resembles the White House is officially off the market after a buyer scooped it up in late October.

The seller fetched $23 million in the Oct. 23 sale of the massive Hillsborough home nicknamed the "Western White House," according to its listing with Compass agents Alex and Pierre Buljan.

Alex Buljan told FOX Business it was "one of the priciest sales ever in Hillsborough."

The Neoclassical Georgian-style mansion is over 100 years old and has belonged to multiple different people over its lifetime.

One of its past owners, George R. Hearst of the well-known media dynasty, had architect Julia Morgan revamp the home to resemble the White House in 1930. Morgan was also behind the design of Hearst Castle and hundreds of other buildings in California.

The white facade, columns and portico of the "Western White House" all call back to the iconic presidential appearance of the White House.

The Hillsborough mansion’s approximately 2.9-acre lot features an "impeccably laid driveway" and "verdant greens," the listing said. Also on the estate is a pool pavilion that sits near the mansion’s backyard pool.

Inside, the home contains over 24,000 square feet, with 11 bedrooms, nine full-bathrooms and five half-bathrooms.

The four-floor home has been "thoughtfully rejuvenated with the finest fixtures and state-of-the-art appliances" and is replete with many windows and high ceilings that help with "bathing each room in natural light," the listing said.

Its new owner will have a home theater, fitness room and wine cellar at their disposal. They will also be able to work out of a stately office similar to the White House Oval Office, according to Compass.

The late October $23 million sale of the White House-reminiscent mansion came several months after a planned auction of the property was called off by the now-former owner.

While on the traditional real estate market, its price changed a couple times, according to the mansion’s listing. Its initial price tag was $38.9 million.

"The seller is happy that the property found a buyer that really appreciates the house and all of its history," Alex Bulgan told FOX Business.

An Illinois woman was arrested and charged with murdering her husband, a judge, police said.

The Edwards County Sheriff’s Office was responding to a house call around noon Tuesday in Albion, Illinois, when they discovered a body outside the residence, according to an Illinois State Police statement.

It was Michael J. Valentine, the Illinois Second Judicial Circuit Court judge, and he’d been shot to death.

Police arrested and took his wife, 44-year-old Megan Valentine, into custody where she’s being held in jail.

“Valentine was charged with First Degree Murder (Class M Felony), Aggravated Battery with a Firearm (Class X Felony), Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 2 Felony), and Aggravated Domestic Battery (Class 2 Felony),” the police statement said.

After investigating, police presented the case to the State’s Attorney Appellate Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday, leading to the aforementioned charges being filed, according to the statement.

But police did not specify evidence or details as to why Valentine was charged for the murder of her husband.

President-elect Donald Trump has achieved a record-breaking popular vote count for a Republican candidate in the 2024 election, according to projections, NY Post reported.

As of Monday morning, Trump had secured 74.83 million popular votes, surpassing his previous record of 74.22 million votes from the 2020 election, as reported by the Associated Press.

Currently, Trump leads Vice President Kamala Harris, who received 70.9 million votes, though numerous votes remain uncounted, including those from California, where only 66% of ballots have been counted so far. Votes are also outstanding in states like Alaska, Arizona, Maryland, Oregon, and Utah, with an estimated 5 million votes left to be processed.

Republicans haven’t captured the popular vote in a presidential race since 2004, when President George W. Bush received 62 million votes. For perspective, in 1984, Ronald Reagan won 54 million votes in his landslide victory, when the U.S. population was 100 million fewer than today.

Despite Trump’s significant count, President Biden still holds the record for the most popular votes in U.S. history, with 81.3 million votes in 2020.

In addition to his popular vote count, Trump has won all seven battleground states, securing an Electoral College victory of 312 to 226 — the largest win since President Barack Obama’s 332 to 206 margin in 2012.

For comparison, Trump won the 2016 Electoral College vote 304 to 227, while Biden took it in 2020 with a 306 to 232 margin.

On January 20, 2025, 78-year-old Trump will be sworn in as the 47th president, becoming the first since Grover Cleveland in the 1890s to serve two nonconsecutive terms.

As he prepares for his second term, Trump is assembling his administration. He announced Saturday that he would not be reinstating former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley or former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

The president-elect is scheduled to meet with President Biden at the White House this Wednesday.

What created an unusual dark streak in Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas's tail? Some images of the bright comet during mid-October not only caught its impressively long tail and its thin anti-tail, but a rather unexpected feature: a dark streak in the long tail. The reason for the dark streak is currently unclear and a topic of some debate. Possible reasons include a plume of dark dust, different parts of the bright tail being unusually superposed, and a shadow of a dense part of the coma on smaller dust particles. The streak is visible in the featured image taken on October 14 from Texas, USA. To help future analyses, if you have taken a good image of the comet that clearly shows this dark streak, please send it in to APOD. Comet Tsuchinshan–ATLAS has now faded considerably and is returning to the outer Solar System.

Turn back the page to the Atomic Age. It’s 1958.

The United States and the Soviet Union have been busy testing nuclear weapons on Earth, but the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik 1 in 1957 has changed the entire Cold War.

The Soviets proved they can launch a rocket, and therefore could launch a nuclear warhead, anywhere in the world. The United States, inside both its military and its scientific community, was scrambling for a response.

One plan? Nuke the Moon. Yes, the United States briefly considered blowing up part of the Moon. This was an idea the Air Force seriously entertained and in fact studied how to carry out.

In 1958, Dr. Leonard Reiffel, working out of the Armour Research Foundation (which became part of the Illinois Institute of Technology), was asked by the Air Force to “fast track” research into what a nuclear explosion would be like on the Moon.

Project A119, or “A Study of Lunar Research Flights – Volume I” as the paper outlining it was called, laid out the scenario.

The United States Air Force — this was at the time when America’s space program was still mainly split up across the military — would launch a rocket to the Moon.

It would be carrying an atomic bomb; a hydrogen bomb would be too heavy for the mission. Once it reached the Moon, avoiding any crater, it would explode.

Beyond offering new insights into the Moon itself, the detonation would show the Soviets that the United States could fight back even on the lunar surface.

The project “clearly” had three motivations according to the authors: scientific, military and political.

The military nature of the project was clear; the paper features the emblem of the Air Force Special Weapons Center at Kirtland Air Force Base.

Task & Purpose loves strange Cold War space programs.

With the Space Race in full swing, nuclear paranoia at or near its height, and a military willing to entertain nearly any idea for national security, the 1950s and 1960s led to some wild moments.

From proposed nuclear-powered bases on the Moon to the time a former elevator repairman turned nuclear physicist got the Navy to try to turn off the sky using nuclear weapons, it was a strange time.

This was, after all, the time when the U.S. was having soldiers march towards nuclear explosions and developing shoulder-fired nuclear weapons.

Project A119 was no different. Since the blast was in space, there would be no mushroom cloud.

And since the blast would be right on the dividing line between the lit-up and dark sides of the Moon, the explosion would be visible to the world.

“I made it clear at the time there would be a huge cost to science of destroying a pristine lunar environment, but the U.S. Air Force were mainly concerned about how the nuclear explosion would play on Earth,” Reiffel told The Observer in 2000.

He also said that the Air Force considered the Moon to be “military high ground.”

Reiffel led a 10-person team to look into how a plan would play out. Scientist Carl Sagan was part of the team.

Reiffel wrote multiple studies over the course of several months in the late 1950s. However, despite the military’s initial insistence on the importance of Project A119, it was eventually killed in 1959.

Concern over serious damage to the Moon, as well as potential casualties on Earth if things went wrong, nixed the program.

It did not nix more terrestrial nuclear testing or projects, however.

Perhaps because the very nature of the proposal was so drastic, Project A119 was kept secret for decades. It wasn’t until 2000 when Reiffel, then 73, revealed the existence of the plan to the wider public.

He also would note that, in his view, the detonations would have been visible to those on Earth.

The project was one of several examples of the military’s rather optimistic view of how quickly it could get humans or weapons into space.

The United States achieved massive scientific breakthroughs in the years after Sputnik, getting humans on the Moon 12 years after the Soviet satellite entered orbit, but the rate of advancement never hit the strides 1950s and early 1960s military planners envisioned.

The United States would eventually bomb the Moon, sort of, but not in the way the Air Force intended. On Oct. 9, 2009, NASA intentionally slammed a rocket into the surface of the Moon.

The satellite hit the surface, scanning kicked up lunar dust for any signs of water.

But the dream of Project A119 faded away, like the ideas of the nuclear death cloud and lunar Army base and the many proposals to use nuclear weapons to help with infrastructure projects.

The UK and France have donated a number of Storm Shadow/Scalp cruise missiles to Ukraine. The US, which provides some components for the European long-range weapons, has a say on how they are used. Biden has repeatedly rejected calls by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to allow strikes deep inside Russia, which Moscow said would seriously escalate the conflict.

According to Telegraph sources, the leaders of theUK and France will make a “last ditch attempt” to secure a policy change by the outgoing US president to “thwart Donald Trump’s efforts to scale back US support for Ukraine.” The Republican politician will take office on January 20, after winning last week’s US presidential election.

”We are very keen to make sure we can make the most of the time between now and January 20 and not just put everything on hold until the next administration,” a senior Whitehall source told the British newspaper.

Trump claimed on the campaign trail that he could end the Ukraine conflict “in 24 hours” if elected for a second term. He reportedly intends to play hardball with both sides, forcing Kiev and Moscow to compromise.

Kiev claimsthat it could turn the tide on the battlefield bystriking targets deep inside Russiawith Western long-range weapons. At the weekend, it launched dozens of kamikaze drones at Moscow for the first time in months, but failed to cause any meaningful damage, according to Russian officials.

Western missiles are more powerful than Ukrainian drones and can produce better results, Zelensky has previously argued, explaining why he is seeking permission from donors for such strikes.

Russian President VladimirPutin has warned that his government would treat any attacksalong the lines envisioned by Kiev andits backers as coming from the state that provides the arms. Moscow will react to any such an escalation accordingly, he said.

'There is no place for hate': Authorities investigating signs linked to hate group hung at American Tobacco Campus and along I-40

Authorities are investigating a sign that a hate group hung up at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham on Saturday. Signs from Patriot Front were also posted in various areas around downtown Durham.

A sign linked to a hate group was removed Saturday from the American Tobacco Campus (ATC) in Durham.

A photo showed the sign, which read "strong families, strong nations" with a link to a Patriot Front website. A spokesperson from ATC said they were alerted about the sign and removed it.

Patriot Front is classified by several groups, including the Southern Poverty Law Center, as a White nationalist hate group.

As the day progressed, more banners were noticed by people traveling along I-40.

Surveillance footage captured a man holding a banner near the American Tobacco Campus. Moments later, the same banner was spotted hanging from the South Parking Garage.

"There is no place for hate at the American Tobacco Campus," said ATC General Manager Pete McClure.

ATC security sent WRAL News two photos showing the people they believe hung the sign on the building.

"I find it scary, and it worries me," said one anonymous witness to the signs.

Sources told WRAL News they saw the same men from the video placing more materials around the downtown area.

It is unclear if authorities believe the same men posted the signs.

WRAL spoke with the person who chose to share the picture of the banner to help raise awareness.

"It is a little scary to kind of see it around, and you’re thinking okay that's why, when you do see those sort of things, you’ve got to call it out and say 'that’s not what anybody here stands for,'" another sign witness said.

American Tobacco Campus, owned by WRAL’s parent company, said there is no place for hate at ATC and emphasized their commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all.

ATC said they have been working with law enforcement during the investigation.

Signs from Patriot Front were also posted in various areas around downtown Durham at various times

"Durham is a super diverse city; I don’t think white supremacist hate is welcome here," a witness said.

Congressman Byron Donalds has argued that the president-elect is focused solely on Americans and on fixing their main issues

President-elect Donald Trump does not have any sort of blacklist of people that he is supposedly planning to punish after taking office, Florida Congressman Byron Donalds told Fox News on Sunday.

Several US officials and media outlets have been speculating that Trump has, as one described it, a “vendetta against people that he believes have crossed him” and that he plans to go after his critics and perceived enemies. (You mean like Bidan did from day one on Trump and MAGA?)

“There’s never been a set of threats like this made by a candidate for president of the United States,” Michael Bromwich, a former inspector generalat the US Department of Justice told The Hill ahead of the November 5 vote, in which Trump beat his Democratic rival Kamala Harris.

However, Congressman Donalds has dismissed these concerns, arguing that Trump has never said he would make it his mission to prosecute his detractors.

“For the American people who have been listening to these lies from the Democratic left, I will tell you: This is not something that Donald Trump has ever spoken to, or he’s committed to, whatsoever. There’s no ‘enemies list’,” Donalds told Fox News.

The Republican added that Trump does not intend to focus his attention on going after his detractors and is instead committed to helping the American people and addressing the country’s top issues, such as securing the US-Mexico border, deporting illegal immigrants and improving the economy and energy.

“His focus is the American people, not some ‘enemies list’,” Donalds insisted.

Throughout his rallies, press interviews and social media posts, Trump has regularly spoken about a group of “enemies” within the US government that he has defined as “radical-left lunatics” that allegedly have been acting against America’s best interests.

During a podcast interview with Joe Rogan, Trump has also stated that these “enemies within” pose a bigger danger to the US than some of its foreign adversaries. (He said "The Enemy Within", which is the DS)

However, Trump has dismissed concerns from the Democratic party that he would try to prosecute his political opponents and has pointed out that, after winning against Hillary Clinton in 2016, he ultimately chose not to go after his Democratic rival, arguing that it would have “looked terrible” for the country.

Trump has claimed that the Biden-Harris administration, on the other hand, has weaponized the US Department of Justice, and has been using it to shut down its opponents, including the former president himself.

Earlier this year, a Manhattan jury found the Republican candidate guilty on 34 felony counts related to alleged hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels and to his role in the January 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riots.

Not toeing the line for the Democrat could cost people their jobs in the US entertainment industry, the billionaire has claimed

American celebrities are publicly endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris in the US presidential election race partly because their job security is on the line, tech billionaire Elon Musk claimed on Joe Rogan’s podcast on Monday.

Multiple heavyweights in the US entertainment industry, including some who were previously apolitical, have backed the Democratic candidate for president.

Hosting Musk on his show, Rogan called the rallying behind Harris “strange,” suggesting that celebrities “think it’s going to get them more movies or something.”

Musk claimed that the opposite is true, and that “these celebrities, they get a call from someone powerful in Hollywood. That person says: ‘You know it would be really great if you endorsed Kamala.’”

“Once Trump got into office, he became this focal point, where all logic was thrown out the window,” Rogan suggested. “It's just ‘Trump is bad, you have to attack Trump.’”

Superstar singers Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Jennifer Lopez, as well as actor Harrison Ford, are some of the big names to have endorsed Harris.

Star cities: New 3D view of globular clusters illuminates their origins

Looking out into the Milky Way, it's possible to see all sorts of strange cosmic structures — tentacle-like spiraling arms of stars in the outer regions of the galaxy, dark clouds of gas and dust that block out whatever sits behind them and jets of radiation shooting out from the supermassive black hole in the center.

You might also notice blobs of densely packed regions of stars — galaxies within galaxies, if you will.

Astronomers know these blobs of stars as globular clusters, and they've been trying to decipher exactly how these stellar neighborhoods come into existence and evolve through time.

Now, an international group of researchers are the first to perform a 3D kinematic analysis of multiple stellar populations from a sample of 16 globular clusters in the Milky Way.

The new research has provided astronomers with the most detailed description of how stars move within globular clusters, and the clusters' overall evolution from their formation to the present day.

Researchers collected data on the motions and velocities of stars within globular clusters using the European Space Agency's (ESA) Gaia spacecraft, the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) and other instruments, as part of the Multi Instrument Kinematic Survey (MIKIS), a spectrographic survey designed to explore the internal dynamics of globular clusters.

The combined use of space-based and ground-based telescopes has provided the clearest picture of the velocity and distribution of stars in the targeted globular clusters to date, team members said.

"The results of our study provide the first solid evidence that globular clusters formed through multiple star-formation events and place fundamental constraints on the dynamical path followed by the clusters throughout their evolution," Emanuele Dalessandro, lead author of the new study, explained in a press release.

"These results were made possible by a multi-diagnostic approach and the combination of state-of-the-art observations and dynamic simulations," Dalessandro added.

Globular clusters are of particular interest to astrophysicists, as they can be 12 to 13 billion years old, which means they were some of the first structures that formed in the early universe. (The Big Bang that created the universe occurred about 13.8 billion years ago.)

Clusters are also typical in all galaxies. Astronomers know they contain different populations of stars, old and new, because of the metal content of those stars — the proportion of them made up of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. (Older stars tend to have fewer such "metals.")

"In this work, we analyzed in detail the motion of thousands of stars within each cluster," Alessandro Della Croce, co-author of the study, said in the same release.

"It quickly became clear that stars belonging to different populations have distinct kinematic properties: Stars with anomalous chemical composition tend to rotate faster than the others within the cluster and progressively spread from the central regions to the outer ones," Della Croce added.

Dalessandro thinks that characterizing the behavior of stars within globular clusters could help answer some persistent questions about the formation and evolution of galaxies as a whole.

"Their astrophysical significance is huge," said Dalessandro, "because they not only help us to test cosmological models of the formation of the universe due to their age but also provide natural laboratories for studying the formation, evolution and chemical enrichment of galaxies."

While questions still remain, the new study — which was published last week in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics — shines a bright new light on the behavior of these bustling galactic neighborhoods.

US President-elect Donald Trump could present his vision of peace in Ukraine in the coming days, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has claimed. The head of government has predicted that the Republican would offer a timeframe for a potential truce as well as security guarantees for Kiev.

While on the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly vowed to end the Ukraine conflict within “24 hours,” without specifying any details. The president-elect told the US media that he was going to tell Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky “No more. NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump says that Tom Homan, his former acting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement director, will serve as “border czar” in his incoming administration.

“I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation’s Borders,” he wrote late Sunday on his Truth Social site.

Homan was widely expected to be offered a position related to the border and Trump’s pledge to launch the largest deportation operation in the country’s history.

For the next week or so, if you happen to be outside during the overnight hours and happen to catch a glimpse of a bright and colorful "shooting star" you might very well have just caught sight of a Taurid meteor.

This annual meteor display shows up like clockwork every year between the middle of October and the middle of November, but Nov. 5 through Nov. 12 will be the best time to look for them when they reach a broad maximum.

Roughly 8 to 12 meteors per hour might be seen under dark skies during this period.

Most meteor showers are at their best after midnight, because their radiants (apparent points of origin) are highest in the sky just before dawn.

The Taurid meteor shower is an unusual case where the radiant is highest soon after midnight so the shower can be observed all night.

Their name comes from the way they seem to radiate from the constellation Taurus, the Bull, which sits low in the east a couple of hours after sundown and is almost directly overhead by around 1:30 a.m.

The higher a shower's radiant is in the sky, the more meteors can be seen emanating from it.

The moon was new on Nov. 1, and by Nov. 7, it will stay up until around 9:40 p.m. local time. By the morning of Nov. 12, it will be up until about 2:30 a.m., leaving the rest of the night dark for meteor viewing.

Meteors — popularly referred to as "shooting stars" — are generated when cosmic debris enters and burns up in Earth's atmosphere.

In the case of the Taurids, they are attributed to debris left behind by periodic comet Encke, which last passed through the inner solar system in October 2023 and expected to return in February 2027.

The Taurids are the slowest of any major shower's meteors, encountering the Earth at only about 19 miles (30 km) per second. The Taurid stream is noted for its many brightly colored meteors.

Although the dominant color is yellow, many orange, green, red, and blue meteors have been recorded. Occasionally this shower includes spectacular so-called "Halloween fireballs."

These may grab attention anytime for several weeks, not just on Halloween.

This shower's debris stream contains noticeably larger fragments than those shed by other comets, which is why this rather elderly meteor stream occasionally delivers a few unusually bright meteors known as "fireballs."

The Taurids are actually divided into the Northern Taurids and the Southern Taurids. This is an example of what happens to a meteor stream when it grows old.

The southern component of the Taurid shower peaks in early November, the northern component in mid-November. They overlap, and each runs for many weeks.

During this time their large, diffuse radiants migrate all the way from southeastern Pisces across southern Aries to well east of the Pleiades.

The radiant regions climb the eastern sky during the evening so no post-midnight vigils are required. But if it weren't for the possibility of fireballs, this would be considered a modest shower of minor interest.

According to Margaret Campbell-Brown and Peter Brown, in the 2024 edition of the Observer's Handbook of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada, the Southern Taurids reach maximum on Nov. 5 and the Northern Taurids reach their peak a week later on Nov. 12.

The two radiants lie just south of the Pleiades.

So, during the next week, if you see a bright, yellowish meteor sliding rather lazily away from that famous little smudge of stars, you can feel sure it is a Taurid; a piece of Encke's comet.

SBV, like the other stations, shows long monochromatic signal with ~17s period (mono-freq Rayleigh waves?). But filtered above 1Hz SBV (lower plot) also shows seismic(?) signals from repeating sources, with some ~50s apart. Maybe some large, shallow, oscillating volcanic source?

Spaceplane developer Reaction Engines goes bankrupt

Reaction Engines Ltd., a British company that has worked for decades on an air-breathing rocket engine for spaceplanes and other hypersonic vehicles, has filed for bankruptcy.

The company formally entered administration, a process under United Kingdom law to allow for the restructuring or liquidation of companies in financial distress, on Oct. 31 after attempts to raise additional funding fell through.

PricewaterhouseCoopers has been appointed as administrators of the company during the process, and under U.K. law has eight weeks to develop a plan to restructure or sell the company, or else liquidate its assets.

As part of the company’s administration process, most of its approximately 200 employees have been laid off. An industry source said that, given the company’s struggles to raise money, the most likely course of action will be liquidation.

The company, founded in 1989, is best known for the Synergetic Air Breathing Rocket Engine (SABRE), an engine concept proposed by the company intended for use on spaceplanes that would allow them to reach orbit without the need for boosters.

SABRE would use hydrogen and oxygen, taking oxygen from the air through a unique “precooler” design at lower altitudes and speeds and switching to onboard supplies of liquid oxygen as it ascended towards orbit.

The company proposed using SABRE on a spaceplane called Skylon, a single-stage vehicle that could carry 17 tons to low Earth orbit.

Work on Skylon did not advance beyond the conceptual stage, and the company acknowledged that development of Skylon would have cost more than $10 billion.

Reaction Engines continued to work on key technologies for SABRE, securing relatively modest government awards like an $11 million grant from the European Space Agency in 2016.

Large aerospace companies, including BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, invested in the company as it sought other applications for SABRE and its technology, such as for hypersonic vehicles.

The company established an American subsidiary, Reaction Engines Inc., which set up a facility at the Colorado Air and Space Port, an airport east of Denver, for testing elements of SABRE technology like its precooler.

That subsidiary is also included in the administration.

Better catch this week’s supermoon. It will be a while until the next one.

This will be the year’s fourth and final supermoon, looking bigger and brighter than usual as it comes within about 225,000 miles (361,867 kilometers) of Earth on Thursday. It won’t reach its full lunar phase until Friday.

The supermoon rises after the peak of the Taurid meteor shower and before the Leonids are most active.

Last month’s supermoon was 2,800 miles (4,500 kilometers) closer, making it the year’s closest. The series started in August.

In 2025, expect three supermoons beginning in October.

On November 11 there were strange rumbling waves that traveled at 9,000mph across the globe, nearly undetected and unnoticed by the world. Except for one person, a seismologist, who spotted the signal and quickly put out an alert to see if other systems detected the same unusual wave.

The waves began 15 miles off the coast of the small French island of Mayotte, wedged between Madagascar and Mozambique. Seismographs picked up the waves as they traveled as far as New Zealand, Chile, Hawaii and Canada. In total, the waves were detected as far as 11,000 miles from their origin, ringing for 20 minutes or more minutes as they passed. It took only 40 minutes for the waves to travel from Mayotte to the UK and 75 minutes to reach the Hawaiian islands.

As these waves rippled across the globe there were surprisingly no reports of anyone feeling the rumbling. How can a wave be powerful enough to span the entire planet yet no one feels it and largely went unnoticed initially?

The Mayotte event lacked P waves and S waves, but did cause a long-period surface wave travelling at 14,000 km/h (9,000 mph) around the globe. Additionally, the signal released by the earthquake resembled a clean sine wave, while most earthquake waves have multiple frequencies.
