President Macron has named the EU’s former Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier as France’s next prime minister in a bid to break a post-election political stalemate.
The Élysée Palace said on Thursday that Barnier had been “tasked with forming a unifying government to serve the country and the French”.
Barnier, 73, is a veteran of France’s conservative party, Les Républicains (LR).
Pressure had been building for Macron to name a prime minister two months after a snap election that ended up weakening him, with his own centrist camp losing seats, while other forces on the right and left fell short of an outright majority.

They claim that TENET is “spreading division” by reporting on domestic issues like immigration.
Thats what is happening here. The US government is saying “by being critical of our policies, you are weakening our unity, which is what our enemies want. Therefore, criticism of our domestic policy is an act of war.”

Canadian Shipbuilders Calls for 100 Percent Tariff on Chinese-Built Ships

The Canadian Marine Industries and Shipbuilding Association (CMISA) this week issued a call for the Canadian government to impose a 100 percent tariff on Chinese-built ships as a step to protect domestic capabilities and national security. The move comes after Canada announced a similar tariff on Chinese-made electrical vehicles and as the United States is also reviewing a trade complaint from its unions lodged against the Chinese shipbuilding industry.
The Canadian lobbying group highlights that China’s shipbuilding industry is part of a doctrine of civil-military fusion where they contend commercial ship exports are subsidized to strengthen the country’s military capabilities. They highlight that the same shipyards that are producing ferries and cargo vessels for the global market are also used to construct warships.
China has rapidly expanded its shipbuilding capabilities and today dominates commercial ship orders. South Korea is the only meaningful competitor that is still able in some months to record the highest value of orders. However, according to data from Clarkson Research, China attracted 63 percent of the total number of ships ordered so far in 2024 versus just a 23 percent share for the South Korean industry. Japan is a distant third for commercial ship orders.
CMISA in its statement alludes to China's naval expansion and entanglements with neighbors as well as more distant incursions such as in the Arctic. They point to reports that Chinese ships have been seen in Canada’s Arctic waters.
“CIMSA calls for immediate and decisive action,” the trade association said in its statement. “We recommend the imposition of a 100 percent surtax on all Chinese-built ships imported into Canada and demand a clear prohibition on any government entity or Crown corporation from acquiring or leasing Chinese-built vessels.”
The appeal singles out the Canadian government-owned, government-funded Marine Atlantic for its recent introduction of a Chinese-built ferry chartered from Sweden's’ Stena group. The vessel which was built in Weihai, China is on a five-year charter to operate on Canada’s Atlantic coast and Marine Atlantic has a purchase option.
The group accuses the company of using this structure to “evade public scrutiny and ethical concerns.” They call on the company to use the five-year charter period to work with the Canadian industry to design and build a domestic vessel instead of ultimately purchasing the Chinese-built ship.
The statement asserts that it is “imperative that the government takes these actions to protect Canadian industries.”
In the U.S., a coalition of major unions filed a trade complaint against the Chinese shipbuilding industry accusing it of unfair business practices, subsidies, and other violations. This complaint is still under review by the US Trade Representative for possible punitive actions. China angrily responded to the complaint saying it was not based on fact and said the problems in the U.S. industry were more deeply seated and not China’s fault.

The petition proposes remedies including a fee on vessels constructed in China that dock at U.S. ports.

“South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone revealed in a new interview with Vanity Fair that their long-running animated series will not return until 2025, which means “South Park” will be skipping the 2024 presidential election between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. The duo said the delay is somewhat “on purpose” because they no longer have an interest in lampooning Trump on the show, but Parker added that they’re also “waiting for Paramount to figure all their shit out.”
Neither creator specified on what Parker meant about Paramount, but the studio has been going through a proposed sale over the last several months. Paramount Global is currently pending sale to Skydance after the two companies reached a sale agreement in early July worth a reported $8 billion. Skydance claims the deal has an enterprise value of $28 billion, with Skydance itself valued at $4.75 billion.
As for skipping the 2024 presidential election on purpose, Stone noted: “We’ve tried to do ‘South Park’ through four or five presidential elections, and it is such a hard thing to — it’s such a mind scramble, and it seems like it takes outsized importance.”
“Obviously, it’s fucking important, but it kind of takes over everything and we just have less fun.” Parker added. “I don’t know what more we could possibly say about Trump.”
“South Park’s” last proper season was its 26th, and it consisted of six episodes that aired in 2023. Since then, Parker and Stone have created three standalone specials that streamed exclusively on Paramount+ starting last fall: “South Park: Joining the Panderverse,” “South Park (Not Suitable for Children)” and “South Park: The End of Obesity.” The latter special, which targeted weight loss drugs such as Ozempic, streamed in May 2024. That will be the last bit of “South Park” until 2025 it now seems.

Father of Georgia high school shooting suspect arrested
The father of Colt Gray, the teen suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting, has been arrested, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Thursday.
Colin Gray, 54, is being charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children, GBI said.
His son, a student at Apalachee High School, allegedly killed four people, two students and two teachers, when he opened fire at the school in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning. Nine others were wounded and hospitalized, but they were all expected to survive. Hospital officials said Thursday that at least seven of those nine patients had been treated and released, and at least one other remained hospitalized in stable condition.
Police and federal agents were investigating if the weapon used in the shooting, described by officials as an AR-style weapon, was purchased by the teen's father as a gift for his son in December 2023, according to four federal law enforcement sources close to the investigation.
In May of last year, the suspect and his father were both interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff's office after the FBI received tips about online posts threatening a school shooting, the FBI said in a statement Wednesday night. At the time, investigators didn't have enough evidence for an arrest or enough probable cause "to take any additional law enforcement action," the FBI said.

New concerns out Thursday afternoon indicate critical infrastructure is now under threat from migrant cartel members.
According to Libs of TikTok, a Texas-based oil/gas company issued a memo to employees informing them that police and the FBI have warned armed Cuba and Venezuela migrant gangs are committing thefts in the Permian Basin (America's highest producing oil field).
Here's the memo:
Industry peers and law enforcement in West Texas (WTX) are aware of a recent increase in organized criminal activity inclusive of violent crimes, gang activity and oil field thefts in and around WTX operational areas. Specifically, regional law enforcement and the FBI advised that gang members emanating from Cuba and Venezuela are organizing and working in concert to commit thefts within the Permian Basin. These individuals and groups are armed, violent in nature and will not hesitate to use force.
Crimes associated with these groups include the theft of oil, diesel fuel, copper wire, and catalyst elements. Recent incidents have also included two assaults by water haulers who were attempting to steal oil from WTX oilfield sites. After the thieves were observed by witnesses who drove up to investigate, the thieves attempted to use their vehicles to run the witnesses off the road. In another incident, a thief, acting as a spotter and following a water hauler who had stolen oil, also attempted to run a witness off the road. There have been numerous reports of second vehicles acting as spotters for water haulers committing oil thefts.
