Illinois may soon return land the US stole from a Prairie Band Potawatomi chief 175 years ago

Some 175 years after the U.S. government stole land from the chief of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation while he was away visiting relatives, Illinois may soon return it to the tribe.

Nothing ever changed the 1829 treaty that Chief Shab-eh-nay signed with the U.S. government to preserve for him a reservation in northern Illinois: not subsequent accords nor the 1830 Indian Removal Act, which forced all indigenous people to move west of the Mississippi.

But around 1848, the U.S. sold the land to white settlers while Shab-eh-nay and other members of his tribe were visiting family in Kansas.

To right the wrong, Illinois would transfer a 1,500-acre (607-hectare) state park west of Chicago, which was named after Shab-eh-nay, to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. The state would continue providing maintenance while the tribe says it wants to keep the park as it is.

“The average citizen shouldn’t know that title has been transferred to the nation so they can still enjoy everything that’s going on within the park and take advantage of all of that area out there,” said Joseph “Zeke” Rupnick, chairman of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation based in Mayetta, Kansas.

It’s not entirely the same soil that the U.S. took from Chief Shab-eh-nay. The boundaries of his original 1,280-acre (518-hectare) reservation now encompass hundreds of acres of privately owned land, a golf course and county forest preserve. The legislation awaiting Illinois House approval would transfer the Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area.

No one disputes Shab-eh-nay’s reservation was illegally sold and still belongs to the Potawatomi. An exactingly researched July 2000 memo from the Interior Department found the claim valid and shot down rebuttals from Illinois officials at the time, positing, “It appears that Illinois officials are struggling with the concept of having an Indian reservation in the state.”

But nothing has changed a quarter-century later.

Democratic state Rep. Will Guzzardi, who sponsored the legislation to transfer the state park, said it is a significant concession on the part of the Potawatomi. With various private and public concerns now owning more than half of the original reservation land, reclaiming it for the Potawatomi would set up a serpentine legal wrangle.

“Instead, the tribe has offered a compromise, which is to say, ‘We’ll take the entirety of the park and give up our claim to the private land and the county land and the rest of that land,’” Guzzardi said. “That’s a better deal for all parties involved.” ...

A former Obama fundraiser who assisted in raising millions of dollars in donations for his campaign said that she is leaving the Democratic Party and plans to vote for former President Donald Trump this November.

"Like any divorce, there’s not just one thing, there’s a series of things that led up to it," former Obama fundraiser Allison Huynh said on "Jesse Watters Primetime" last week.

Huynh created the robotics and AI company Willow Garage, which was subsequently sold to Google. She and her then-husband Scott Hassan helped raise millions for then-candidate Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign by hosting Silicon Valley giants for dinners that cost up to $100,000 per plate.

Huynh said she has since become frustrated with the Democratic Party, particularly over its stance on crime.

At least nine people, including seven police officers and a priest have been killed in attacks in Dagestan Region, southern Russia

Unknown assailants have launched a series of attacks on a synagogue and two Orthodox churches, as well as a traffic police station, in the southern Russian region of Dagestan. The incidents are taking place in the regional capital, Makhachkala, and the southern city of Derbent.

At least seven police officers have lost their lives in shootouts with the attackers. At least 12 officers were injured, including six in an attack on the regional capital’s traffic police station.

The assailants also broke into an Orthodox church in Derbent and killed a local priest. The synagogue in the city, which also came under attack, was allegedly set on fire. Photos and videos of the burning building have surfaced on social media.

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported two maritime incidents involving merchant vessels on Sunday. The first occurred in the Red Sea, where a suicide drone struck a vessel. The second incident took place in the Gulf of Aden.

A new update from UKMTO said a merchant ship 96 nautical miles southeast of Nishtun, Yemen, "reported severe flooding that cannot be contained, forcing the master and crew to abandon the ship."

UKMTO said the crew had been rescued by an "assisting ship," and the abandoned ship "remains adrift at position 14°31'N 053°08'E."

Sub-Saharan Africa Becomes New Child-Labor Hostpot

160 million children aged between 5 and 17 worked in child labor in 2020, 79 million of which in hazardous work actively endangering their physical and mental health, according to a report by the International Labour Organization (ILO).

As Statista's Florian Zandt shows in the following chart - based on historical and current estimates as well as trend projections - more than half of child laborers were concentrated in one region.

The latest available data suggests that in 2020, 86.6 million underage workers in in Sub-Saharan Africa were active in "employment below the minimum age as established in national legislation, hazardous unpaid household services, and the worst forms of child labor: all forms of slavery or practices similar to slavery" as defined by the ILO and cited by the U.S. Department of Labor.

Compared to the other main geographical regions with a high prevalence of child labor, Asia and the Pacific and Latin America and the Caribbean, the amount of child laborers increased by 33 percent since 2008. The figure is projected to rise by four percent between 2020 and 2030, even considering positive trends in reducing child labor.

In Asian countries like India, Bangladesh or China, the number of children working in unsafe working environments or being employed illegally according to the minimum age for joining the respective country's workforce has more than halved since 2008, while Latin America and the Caribbean saw a reduction by six million individuals or 42 percent.

ILO figures for forced labor, which stood at 28 million people in 2022, might contradict child labor data on the surface.

However, not every child laborer is technically forced into work; the ILO estimates that about 3.3 million children worldwide are subjected to forced labor, which is defined as "all work or service exacted from any person under the menace of any penalty and for which the said person has not offered himself voluntarily".

70 percent of child laborers worldwide are employed in the agricultural sector.

In the underage forced labor segment, which is a subset of child labor, about half of the children are commercially sexually exploited.

Top US Law Schools Present Undeniable Evidence Of Israel's Gaza Genocide

A comprehensive report compiled by several top law schools in the United States has amassed a body of evidence definitively demonstrating Israel's frequent and blatant violations of the 1948 genocide convention amid the ongoing onslaught in Gaza.

On May 15, the University Network for Human Rights (UNHR), a U.S.-based advocacy group training undergraduates in human rights law at colleges and universities worldwide to counter abusive state, corporate, or private conduct, published a 105-page analysis of international law and its application to Israel’s military actions since October 7, 2023. Drawing on extensive evidence and historical legal precedents, the findings leave no doubt that Israel has committed horrific breaches of the 1948 Genocide Convention in Gaza.

A collaborative effort by some of the West’s most prestigious law schools, the report has now been submitted to the United Nations. The institution has yet to comment on the UNHR investigation’s irrefutable, bombshell contents. The mainstream media has also remained silent. Given the complicity of Western journalists in whitewashing and justifying unconscionable crimes in Gaza, this is not surprising. However, the silence has been so pervasive that the report may have even gone unnoticed by committed Palestine solidarity activists.

This silence is itself an injustice, as the UNHR has produced a singular, indispensable resource for factually, legally, and morally refuting the arguments and assertions of Zionists and their allies, old and new. The report details, in devastating forensic detail, the variety of deplorable, murderous ways in which the Israeli state and its operatives at every level are culpable for committing genocide in Gaza, from public expressions of “blatant and unequivocal dehumanization and cruelty” to military actions explicitly designed to maximize Palestinian slaughter.

As defined in the Genocide Convention of 1948 and interpreted by international courts and tribunals, the crime of genocide requires that a perpetrator kill, seriously harm, or inflict conditions of life calculated to destroy a group, in whole or in part, with the intent to destroy that group. Thomas Becker, UNHR’s legal director, tells MintPress News: “What’s happening now is both unprecedented and, in many ways, a textbook case of genocide.”

Five days after the publication of the UNHR’s landmark investigation, International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Karim Khan announced his intent to indict Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for numerous crimes against humanity and atrocities committed since October 7, 2023. While it remains uncertain whether they will ever face justice, the Network’s report should inspire governments and citizens worldwide to work relentlessly towards achieving that righteous goal.

‘DESTROY AND EXTERMINATE’

In 1925, German writer and satirist Kurt Tucholsky reportedly remarked, “The death of one man is a catastrophe; a hundred thousand deaths is a statistic.” This quote has since become entrenched in Western political consciousness and is often attributed to various figures, most prominently Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. However, the casualty and death figures emerging from Gaza, especially when accompanied by gruesome photographic and video evidence of Tel Aviv’s numerous crimes, are far from mere statistics.

“Israel’s attack on Palestinians in Gaza has been one of superlatives,” Becker told MintPress News. “More children have died in four months in Gaza than in four years of the world’s conflicts combined. The starvation rate in Gaza is the fastest the world has seen, and this is the deadliest conflict ever recorded for journalists and aid workers,” he continued.

In just half a year, Israel has killed two percent of Gaza’s children and either killed or injured five percent of its total population. It has displaced 75 percent of the population, destroying 70 percent of Gaza’s homes. Additionally, it has destroyed every university and 80 percent of Gaza’s schools.”

The UNHR report is equally direct. It states, “Israel has committed genocidal acts of killing, causing serious harm to, and inflicting conditions of life calculated to bring about the physical destruction of Palestinians in Gaza, a protected group that forms a substantial part of the Palestinian people.” As of May 1 this year, over five percent of Gaza’s total population had been massacred. Approximately 14,500 of the dead were children.

At least six people have died and more than 100 have been wounded in Ukrainian drone and missile attacks, according to Russian authorities.

Five people, including two children, were killed by falling debris when five Ukrainian missiles were shot down in the port city of Sevastopol in Russia-annexed Crimea, said Mikhail Razvozhayev, the city's Moscow-installed governor.

Russian state news agency RIA Novosti said 124 people were wounded, citing the health ministry.

The Telegraph, Citing Anonymous Sources, Claims Hezbollah 'Storing Missiles and Explosives at Lebanon's Main Airport'

The UK paper The Telegraph, citing exclusively anonymous sources, ran an article on Sunday with no named author claiming Hezbollah is "storing missiles and explosives at Lebanon's main airport."

"Hezbollah stores missiles and explosives at Lebanon's main airport, whistleblowers claim," The Telegraph headline stated along with the subheader, "Exclusive: Terrorists pass through 'bribed' customs officers unchallenged with large amounts of Iranian weaponry."

The report reads like pure propaganda and Israel swiftly shared the report on their official X account to provide a pretext for blowing the airport up.

From The Telegraph:

Hezbollah is storing huge quantities of Iranian weapons, missiles, and explosives in Beirut's main civilian airport, according to airport whistleblowers.

[...] In a city that has been battered economically since 2019, the whistleblower claims workers collaborating with Hezbollah "walk around like peacocks" with new watches and smartphones, and drive new cars. "A lot of money [is] being passed under the table," he added.

In a statement, the IDF said: "Hezbollah's strategy to hide weapons and operate from civilian neighbourhoods stems from its intentions to draw the IDF to target these civilian areas in times of escalation.

"If Hezbollah were to target Israeli civilians from these sites, the IDF would have no choice but to react, potentially placing Lebanese civilians in harm's way, causing international outrage toward the IDF."

The Air Transport Union in Lebanon denied the accusations in a statement shared by Al Mayadeen.

The Air Transport Union in Lebanon (UTA) denied in a statement The Telegraph's report in which it claimed that "Hezbollah stores missiles and explosives at Lebanon's main airport," saying that these clams were made without any proof offered.

The UTA called The Telegraph's unfounded claims "mere illusions and lies aimed at endangering Beirut Airport and its civilian workers, as well as travelers to and from it, all of whom are civilians."

Moreover, the Air Transport Union held the media outlet, as well as "those who report on it and spread its falsehoods" responsible for the safety of those who work at Beirut Airport in all its facilities "including the passenger terminal, departure and arrival, the apron, maintenance, and civil air cargo."

Additionally, in its statement, it called on all Lebanese, Arab, and foreign media outlets to come to Beirut Airport "with their camera crews and verify for themselves, otherwise, we consider what is being promoted by suspicious media outlets as incitement to kill us."

[...] Additionally, the caretaker minister called on all media outlets and all ambassadors or their representatives to visit the airport tomorrow at 10:30 am for a tour of all airport facilities to make sure that the airport is strictly a civilian infrastructure and that no weapons are being smuggled through it.

As a reminder, when the Russia-Ukraine war kicked off in 2022, The Telegraph ran an atrocity propaganda tale claiming Russia was using "mobile crematoriums" to "hide evidence of battlefield casualties."

I want to tell you guys a HORROR story regarding Social Security SSI Disability Benefits.

I know a 65 year old man who was in an accident and hasn't worked in a longtime because he can't walk and one arm is partially disabled but I always see him trying to get around and participate in life as much as he can and I greatly respect him for his efforts.

The other day he explained to me that he was on SSI Disability and it is really hard to makes ends meet with the Bidenomics price increases but he manages to keep going on only $943 dollars a month for all his expenses.

To me the maximum amount of SSI Disability payments for a disabled elderly man only being $943 a month, makes no sense at all it'sCRUELTYno matter how you slice it.

I decided to give him $300 a month to help him out and also looked into other benefits he might be eligible for every month.

After contacting the 'Social Security office I was told if I give him $300 a month then $300 a month will be deducted from his SSI monthly payment and I said how can he possibly get ahead when he cannot have more than $943 a month and no more than $2,000 in total life savings or he will be kicked off the program.

Social Security workers they don't give two shits about anyone.

Where I live you can't even rent a closet for $943' a month so I'm wondering why are the the politicians in Washington DC doing this to America's elderly that are unfortunately disabled?

All that fucken taxpayer money going to non Americans in the Ukraine and all them asshole politicians in Washington DC can't even give America's disabled elderly a couple more hundred dollars a month at least...
