The seven-time Wimbledon champion accused the Centre Court crowd of “crossing the line” and disrespecting him after he beat Dane Holger Rune in three straight sets last night.

The crowd repeatedly chanted “Rune” throughout the match, which Djokovic claimed was an attempt to antagonize him because the word sounds like “boo!”

Nearly two weeks after the US Supreme Court tossed out a $6 billion bankruptcy settlement agreed upon by the Sackler family to address claims that the OxyContin manufacturer fueled America's opioid crisis, the court-appointed committee of Purdue creditors on Monday asked a US bankruptcy court if they could sue individual Sackler family members. The creditors allege that the Sacklers illegally transferred billions of dollars to offshore private trusts before Purdue's 2019 bankruptcy filing.

A court filing from Purdue's creditors, which include individuals harmed by the opioid epidemic as well as insurers and companies with opioid claims, requested the urgent need to sue Sackler family members and ensure they are not "allowed 'off the hook' for their grotesque misconduct in creating and fueling the opioid crisis," according to Reuters.

If a new round of mediation between the estate, which represents the Purdue company and not the Sackler family, fails, creditors could begin the process of suing the family to recover more than $11.5 billion. Creditors allege the family shifted Purdue profits into offshore trusts ahead of the company's 2019 bankruptcy.

In late June, the Supreme Court ruled that the $6 billion settlement deal would be terminated because it would have improperly shielded members of the Sackler family from future lawsuits. Continue…

An agricultural technology firm will be opening its North American Insect Centre in the Saskatchewan city this month, with a focus on creating livestock feed out of flies.

NRGene Canada said that its new facility will be open on July 30 and will be developed in collaboration with Swiss technology group Bühler to conduct research and development of soldier fly strains, notably the black soldier flies, native to South America.

The company’s goal is to promote insect protein as a sustainable source for livestock feed.

The insects feed on decaying organic matter, making them a prominent choice for reducing composting and manure, and NRGene plans to use such agricultural byproducts to feed them.

NRGene uses data analysis and artificial intelligence to develop better genetics, creating flies with larger larvae and reduced hatch time. Continue…

A court has granted Saskatchewan an emergency injunction against the Canada Revenue Agency to block the federal government from collecting the carbon tax directly.

The province’s court victory was announced Monday by Attorney General Bronwyn Eyre.

The minister said the province sought an injunction “to stop this unfair and unconstitutional cash grab by the Trudeau government.”

“The court ruled in our favour, blocking the federal government from unconstitutionally garnishing money, pending the full hearing and determination of the continuation of the injunction by the Federal Court,” said Eyre in a Facebook post.

A Boeing aircraft mechanic has died after being sucked into the engine of one of its aircraft.

According to TMZ, local technician Abolfazl Amiri was performing routine maintenance at Chabahar Konarak Airport in southern Iran when the tragic incident took place.

During a test check, the right wing engine was running with the cover flaps open. Noticing he had left a tool near the engine, Amiri approached the turbine and was tragically sucked in.

According to Electrly, the electric vehicle charging manufacturer, it takes an average of 90 kilowatt-hours of electricity to fully charge a Tesla Model Y long range all-wheel-drive vehicle, 83 kWh for the Model Y performance version, and 67 kWh for the standard range Model Y.

Each Tesla uses between 0.24 to 0.30 kWh per mile, or about 4,500 kWh over a year for 15,000 miles of driving. Other electric vehicles use more or less, but within a similar range. At 0.30 kWh per mile, that’s 90 kWh for 300 miles of driving for the typical week.

The average American household without an in-home EV charging station consumes about 30 kWh per day, or about 10,720 kWh over a year’s time. With just one electric vehicle being charged at home, that total increases to about 15,220 kWh. For two-EV households, that total runs up to nearly 20,000 kWh per year (assuming both drivers commute to work). That’s nearly double current electricity usage for such families. Continue…

As a reminder, we noted in May the European Union had approved a US-backed plan to use profits and interest generated from Russian assets to help arm Ukraine; however that was a sharp reversal from the previously proposed plan - one which was heavily promoted by Zelensky and Ukraine - to confiscate some $300 billion in Russian assets. Many were wondering what prompted the reversal.

Now we know, and as Bloomberg notes "the Kingdom’s finance ministry told some G-7 counterparts of its opposition to the idea, which was meant to support Ukraine, with one person describing it as a veiled threat." NATO’s leaders are set to approve a separate command at Wiesbaden, Germany, to coordinate training and equipment donations to Kyiv’s forces, a senior administration official told reporters last week.

The command will have about 700 personnel from NATO countries and partner nations assigned to the center, an alliance news release said. The administration officials, speaking to the press Friday, said the center would increase the interoperability among Ukrainian forces and NATO.

As an example of the drive to make Kyiv’s military more interoperable with NATO’s, the administration official said, “the U.S. for more than a year [have] been training Ukrainians on F-16 platforms,” as have other alliance members.

NATO will also facilitate equipment logistics and provide support through the center to the long-term development of Ukraine’s armed forces, the release added.

Last month, the alliance’s defense ministers approved the motion for consideration at the summit in Washington.

This framework swaps India out for the Philippines, and its latest relevant development was the clinching of a Japanese-Philippine military logistics pact.

That agreement follows April’s first-ever trilateral US-Japanese-Philippine summit, which tightened the US’ containment noose around China, and came approximately nine months after those three’s National Security Advisors met for the first time ever in June 2023. In a speech at the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship in Beirut, a diplomat posted at the Canadian embassy in Lebanon, Sylvie Michaud, lauded her government’s commitment to gender equality.

Michaud, who briefly served as an engagement strategist for the Liberal Party of Canada before her diplomatic appointment, spoke on a “feminist diplomacy” panel at the American University of Beirut on July 2.

“Since 2016, Canada’s feminist foreign policy seeks to be inclusive, intersectional, transformative and grounded in human rights. It takes into account the diverse experiences of women, men and non-binary people facing multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination and exclusion,” said Michaud.

The policy applies to Canada’s “international efforts including diplomacy, trade, security, development and consular services” explained Michaud.

As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attempts to curry favour with NATO partners during the defence treaty’s 2024 Washington summit, a new report by the federal budget watchdog shows the Liberals significantly overestimated their defence spending.

On the same day that the NATO meeting began, the Parliamentary Budget Officer released an analysis showing that Canada will miss its NATO spending requirement by more than the Liberals projected in the 2024 budget.

As part of the Liberal government’s 2024 federal budget, the party pledged to increase Canada’s defence spending to 1.76% of GDP by 2030, still below NATO’s 2% threshold.

NATO member nations have agreed to allocate a minimum of 2% of their GDP to annual military expenditure and to ensure that at least 20% of this spending is dedicated to new equipment. Yet time and time again, the Liberal government has not provided a clear path to reach these targets.

Trudeau’s revised defence policy pledged $73 billion in military spending over the next 20 years with a prioritization on climate change.

Based on NATO’s data, Canada has failed to surpass 1.5% of defence expenditure as a share of GDP every year since 2014, with ebbs and flows seeing increases and decreases over the past decade. Continue…

While the British Columbia government’s official figures show assisted deaths are on the rise, an anti-euthanasia advocate is concerned with the quality of the data the province is providing.

British Columbia released its annual report on medical assistance in dying last week, revealing a 10% rise in the number of euthanasia deaths. In 2023, there were 2,767 euthanasia deaths reported compared with the previous year’s 2,515.

Alex Schadenberg, the executive director for the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, raised the alarm on what he calls an “intentionally mysterious” report, which “does very little” to clarify many of the questions surrounding the province’s euthanasia program.

“What was shocking to me about the data was that 32.9% of deaths were from other conditions,” he told True North in an interview.

The report conveys the underlying medical conditions of those who died in the euthanasia program. The majority of deaths (57.2%) were among British Columbians with cancer. 20% had cardio-vascular conditions, 14.6% had neurological conditions, 7.4% reported having organ failure, and 12.7% had respiratory illnesses.

The report said these conditions were indicated on the prescribing practitioner’s assessment as reasons for accessing euthanasia.

Some patients have multiple conditions listed.

Canada’s continuously worsening unemployment rate could further cement its position at the bottom of G7 countries, according to a Market View report from the National Bank of Canada.

Canada’s unemployment rose to 6.4% in Jun.

“Already the 1.6% pt increase from the 2022 trough is the largest in the G7 and just off the podium among OECD nations,” said National Bank of Canada’s director of economics and strategy, Taylor Schleich.

Inflation in Canada rose 2.9% between May 2023 and May 2024. The only two provinces to keep their heads above water were Manitoba and Saskatchewan, which saw their consumer price index increase by 1.3% and 1.5%, respectively.

Schleich said that “the labour market is gasping for air.”

He said that should the labour market continue to worsen, an unemployment rate of 7% or higher could be in store for Canada this year.

The projections from the National Bank of Canada predict that unemployment will surpass 7% and approach 8% by next spring, an outcome that interest rate cuts would theoretically counter. Continue…

McGill University is dismantling the anti-Israel encampment that has been occupying its campus for weeks, while protesters at the University of Ottawa are ending their encampment voluntarily.

The far-left activists failed to force either university to pursue a boycott and divestment of the Jewish state.

McGill University announced Wednesday that it had hired a private security firm to clear out the encampment, which started Apr. 27, after Montreal police proved unwilling to do so.

A 1000-year-old cathedral in the French city of Rouen has caught fire in what authorities say could be a religiously motivated attack.

While details about the blaze are currently scarce, firefighters are currently working to extinguish the fire and reduce the level of damage.

Local television footage initially showed a dark plume of smoke rising from the spire, with onlookers in the streets below watching in horror.

Other images revealed smoke seeping through a gap in the white cover surrounding the scaffolding.

A masterpiece of French medieval Gothic architecture, the cathedral dates back to the 12th century and gained international fame after being repeatedly painted by the Impressionist artist Claude Monet in the 19th century. Between the years of 1876 and 1880 it was the tallest building in the world.

The scenes are reminisicient of the devastating damage caused to the world-famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris in 2019, repairs for which are only recently reached completion.

A federal consultant for the Liberal government has been arrested after allegedly ripping off Canadian taxpayers for $250,000.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced that its Sensitive and International Investigations unit had charged Clara Elaine Visser, a 63-year-old federal consultant, with fraud on Tuesday.

Visser faces charges of fraud of over $5000 in violation of the Criminal Code.

According to a news release from the RCMP, Public Services Procurement Canada, the government’s central treasurer and accountant, launched an investigation against Visser in the summer of 2021 after the organization discovered “evidence” that she had submitted fraudulent timesheets.

The PSPC found that she had consulted for eight separate government of Canada departments and crown corporations, and it estimated that she had overbilled $250,000 to the government between Jan. 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021. That’s when PSPC handed the case to the RCMP. Continue…

25 year-old Indian man arrested after groping spree at New Brunswick water park

An alleged groping spree at a water park in New Brunswick led to a 25-year-old Indian man’s arrest last weekend.

New Brunswick RCMP officers arrested the man, who they said was “originally from India,” after someone allegedly groped at least 12 people at Magic Mountain SplashZone in Moncton, N.B. on Sunday. Police say some of the alleged victims were under the age of 16.

Police have not released the name of the accused.

In a media release, the RCMP said officers responded to a report of sexual interference and sexual assault at a public water park on Mountain Road in Moncton at around 2 p.m.

“When police arrived at the scene, they learned that a man had been walking around the premises and was groping people,” the release said.

Police told True North in an email that more victims have come forward since the original 12, but police could not provide an exact number as the investigation is still ongoing.

“He is from India; however, he currently resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia,” Sgt. Sylvette Hébert, the officer in charge, told True North.

When asked if the man was a Canadian citizen, she said the police “were not in a position to provide that answer.”

Nasal swab tests were an 'unlawful requirement or demand,' wrote Justice Paul Monahan in the ruling.

An Ontario court has ruled the Trudeau government's requirement of COVID-19 nasal swab tests was unlawful. Justice Paul Monahan's decision was shared online by lawyer Daniel Freiheit.

In the ruling, Justice Monahan found demanding polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests was a violation of the Quarantine Act.

The case involved Meththa Fernando, a traveller returning to her home in Mississauga. Fernando, who was apparently vaccinated, was charged after arriving at Pearson International Airport on April 9, 2022, and rejecting a COVID-19 test after following a random selection by screening officers.

She was originally convicted for failure to comply with Section 58 of the Quarantine Act, receiving a fine of $5,000 along with additional charges bringing the total to $6,255.

Justice Monahan overturned the decision on appeal, citing Section 14 of the act, noting “the screening test cannot involve the insertion into the traveller’s body of any instrument or foreign body.”

“The prosecution raised the point that perhaps the insertion into the nasal cavity did not involve the entry into the body,” Justice Monahan wrote in the decision. “I disagree. The insertion of a nasal swab into the nasal cavity is most definitely an insertion into the body.”

Some on social media expressed sentiments that the decision was too little, too late.

“Not necessarily,” was Freiheit's view. “This case will be mostly relevant for anyone who pled guilty or paid a fine under Section 58 of the Quarantine Act, for refusing to submit to Trudeau's hired PHAC officers when they demanded travellers force wires into their sinus cavities.”

It remains to be seen how this decision will affect other travellers charged under the act.

“I do decide that the nasal swab test, which the screening officer in this case required or demanded Ms. Fernando submit to, was an unlawful requirement

or demand,” wrote Justice Monahan.

“Ms. Fernando’s refusal to comply with the requirement or demand was lawful on her part. Because the requirement or demand made of her by the screening officer was not lawful, Ms. Fernando should not have been found guilty by the Justice of the Peace.”
