Walmart is cutting hundreds of corporate jobs and asking most remote workers to move to offices, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Meanwhile, workers at the U.S. retail giant’s smaller offices in Dallas, Atlanta and Toronto are being asked to move to other central hubs such as Walmart’s corporate headquarters in Bentonville as well as Hoboken or Southern California, the report added.
Walmart will still let staff work remotely part time, as long as they are in offices a majority of the time, the report said.
Walmart employed approximately 2.1 million associates as of Jan. 31, 2024, according to regulatory filings.
The company has been making moves to shrink its workforce over the past year and had said in April last year that it expects about 65% of its stores to be serviced by automation by the end of its fiscal year 2026.
In February 2023, it shut three of its U.S. technology hubs and asked hundreds of workers to relocate to keep their jobs, pushing for more employees to report to work from office.
Walmart didn’t immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The Justice Department announced today that it will monitor elections on May 14 in Prince George’s County, Maryland, to ensure compliance with federal voting rights laws.
The department’s Civil Rights Division and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland work in partnership to enforce the federal voting rights laws that protect the rights of all citizens to access the ballot. The department regularly deploys its staff to monitor for compliance with federal civil rights laws in elections in communities all across the country. In addition, the Civil Rights Division also deploys federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management, where authorized by federal court order.
The Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section, working with U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, enforces the civil provisions of federal statutes that protect the right to vote, including the Voting Rights Act, National Voter Registration Act, Help America Vote Act, Civil Rights Act and Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.
More information about voting and elections is available on the Justice Department’s website at www.justice.gov/voting. Voters by a wide margin seek action against National Public Radio (NPR) after a whistleblower last month came forward and accused the station of liberal-biased news coverage, a poll shows.
Fully 44 percentof respondents to a DailyMail.com/TIPP survey said the broadcaster should lose its taxpayer cashflows over its political leaning.
Another 26 percent of more than 1,400 US adults said it should keep its government support; and 31 percent said they were not sure.
NPR was rocked last month when one of its senior editors, Uri Berliner, accusedhis employer of overly woke news coverage, with a fixation on stories about race and identity….

Ukraine Admits Frontlines In Kharkiv Are Collapsing
For the first time since Russia launched its major cross-border offensive into Ukraine's Kharkiv region (it began last Friday), Ukraine's government has acknowledged that Moscow forces have made rapid gains.
Oleg Sinegubov, the head of the military administration of the Kharkov Region, has said Russia is pushing past the frontline. "Essentially, the frontline is expanding as the enemy is advancing from multiple positions," he admitted during an interview with Sky News.
This confirms a prior Associated Press observation which stated that "Ukraine’s lack of adequate defensive lines has helped Russia make significant military gains, and constant enemy fire hinders building."
As for the lack of fortifications, it is widely believed that last year Kiev was so optimistic about the chances of its counteroffensive that defensive outposts were not prioritized. In essence Ukrainian officials bought into their own propaganda, which was also being widely echoed in the West.

The head of the Main Personnel Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry, Lieutenant General Yury Kuznetsov, has been arrested, the Investigative Committee has said.
A criminal case has been launched against Kuznetsov, who is “suspected of taking a bribe on a particularly large scale,” Russian Investigative Committee spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko said in a statement on Tuesday.
According to investigators, the lieutenant general “received a bribe from representatives of commercial structures for performing certain actions in their favor” from 2021 to 2023, when he was working as the head of the 8th Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, she stated.
During searches of Kuznetsov’s properties, more than 100 million rubles (around $1.1 million) in Russian and foreign currencies, gold coins, collectible watches, and other luxury items were discovered and seized, Petrenko said.
The judge accepted the request of investigators for the suspect to be placed in custody, the spokeswoman added.

A Texas school principal's husband has been accused of producing child abuse materials on school grounds and distributing it on the dark web.
James Stone, who teaches at Tompkins High School in Katy, was taken into custody on Monday on 10 counts of possessing and producing what police say are thousands of images involving minors.
Police say the 53-year-old admitted to producing the images, some of which were taken on school grounds.
He is also well of taking images at various local swimming pools and other places in Katy.
Police claimed that the images were distributed on 'the dark web.'
His wife Melinda Stone, the principal of Taylor High School, wrote two emails to the school community following his arrest and said she was cutting ties with her husband. In two emails - one to parents and staff and another just to staff - she confirmed her knowledge of the charges and announced she was disavowing her husband, whom she said did something 'disgraceful'.
In her letter to staff, the principal wrote: 'I am sure that many of you are aware of the incident involving my husband, James Stone. James was arrested this morning for possession of pornographic materials.
'His arrest and involvement in this criminal activity was unbeknownst to me or those closest to him.
'My family and I are deeply disappointed in his actions and thus we do not have any plans to be involved in James’ criminal proceedings as he navigates the next steps.
'It also important for me to confirm with you that I, nor any other family member, is implicated in James’ criminal activity.
'Because the incident is still being investigated, law enforcement agencies are unable to provide additional information at this time, but know that the District and I take this incident very seriously and are fully cooperating with law enforcement.

DUNNELLON, Fla. — Multiple people are dead and others are hurt after a bus overturned on Highway 40 just outside of Citrus County, authorities said.
Few details are available, but the Citrus County Sheriff's Office tells reporter Eric Glasser a "mass casualty" crash involving at least 85 people occurred Tuesday morning on West Highway 40 in Marion County.
The bus involved in the crash is not a school bus, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said.
West Highway 40 is closed because of the crash. Drivers are urged to find an alternate route, especially if traveling to or from Citrus and Marion counties.
The Florida Highway Patrol is reportedly investigating what happened.

The Biden administration will announce new tariffs on electric vehicle and solar cell imports from China, two major components of the administration’s efforts to reduce U.S. emissions, officials confirmed to reporters.
Officials on the call said tariffs will increase from 25 percent to 100 percent on Chinese EV imports to offset Chinese export practices, which they argued “favor Chinese automakers at the expense of US and other foreign automakers and autoworkers and are leading to a massive surge of unfairly underpriced Chinese vehicles into foreign markets.” The administration will also double tariffs on Chinese solar cell imports to 50 percent, officials said on the call. This increase, they said, is meant to counteract Chinese dominance of global solar production, which currently comprises about 70 percent.
The EV tariffs are largely symbolic, as the existing tariffs have largely kept Chinese imports out. They come a few months after Biden in February ordered a probe of potential national security risks associated with Chinese-made vehicles with Internet connectivity, which includes EVs. The administration has set ambitious goals to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and scale up electric vehicle proliferation, while seeking to assuage concerns within the auto industry that the process would cost American jobs.

CAIRO/GENEVA/BERLIN (Reuters) - A shortage of banknotes is gripping Gaza, fuelling criminal gangs and profiteering, after Israel has blocked imports of cash and most banks in the enclave have been damaged or destroyed during the war, according to residents, aid workers and banking sources.
After more than 7 months of Israeli bombardment, just a handful of ATMs remain operational in the strip, most of the them in the southern city of Rafah, where some 1.4 million Palestinians are sheltering. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has ordered civilians to evacuate parts of the southern city, sparking fears of a looming offensive. Its tanks entered residential districts there on Tuesday.
Supplies of basic goods had returned to some markets in April and early May for the first time in months after Israel ceded to international pressure to let in more aid trucks amid famine warnings.
But residents and aid workers say that many people haven't had the cash to purchase them. Now residents say Israel's offensive in Rafah has dried up supplies again and stoked prices.
Hundreds, sometimes thousands, of desperate people crowd outside ATMs, often waiting days for access. Armed gangs sometimes demand a fee to provide priority access, exploiting the absence of Palestinian police, three Western aid workers and seven residents told Reuters.

AMC Entertainment (AMC) is cashing in on the revival of the meme stock trade.
The struggling theater chain raised $250 million of "new equity capital" through the sale of 72.5 million shares on Monday, per an SEC filing.
The completion of the equity offering, which was initially launched on March 28, came as the meme trade roared back into action on Monday. After the reemergence of Keith Gill, also known as "Roaring Kitty," whose bull case on GameStop ignited the meme stock rally back in 2021, sent shares of GameStop (GME) soaring in early action on Monday, AMC quickly spiked in sympathy. At the market close on Monday, AMC stock had risen more than 78% while GameStop had rallied nearly 75%. The moves higher continued, with both AMC and Gamestop shares roughly doubling in price.
The AMC shares were sold at $3.45 per share, per the SEC filing. By 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, shares were trading hands at as much as $10.70. AMC had been struggling since the pandemic amid a slow return to theaters from moviegoers. In the companies most recent quarter, reported on May 8, AMC produced revenue of $951.4 million, down from $954.4 million in the same quarter a year prior. The company's losses improved, however, with AMC producing an earnings per share loss of $0.62 in the first quarter, a narrower loss than the $1.71 seen in the same quarter a year prior.

For the mostly harmless denizens of planet Earth, the brighter stars of open cluster NGC 2169 seem to form a cosmic 37. Did you expect 42? From our perspective, the improbable numerical asterism appears solely by chance. It lies at an estimated distance of 3,300 light-years toward the constellation Orion. As far as galactic or open star clusters go, NGC 2169 is a small one, spanning about 7 light-years. Formed at the same time from the same cloud of dust and gas, the stars of NGC 2169 are only about 11 million years old. Such clusters are expected to disperse over time as they encounter other stars, interstellar clouds, and experience gravitational tides while hitchhiking through the galaxy. Over four billion years ago, our own Sun was likely formed in a similar open cluster of stars.

Foreign terrorist organizations may seek to exploit "LGBTQIA+-related events and venues," including events during 2024 Pride month - celebrated in June, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned in a recent public service announcement.
"Organizations like ISIS may seek to exploit increased gatherings associated with the upcoming June 2024 Pride Month," according to the announcement, which the agencies issued last week. The announcement added that the threat is "compounded" by the "current heightened threat environment" in the United States.
The threats could come online, in person or in the mail, according to the FBI and DHS.
Last February, ISIS "called for followers to conduct attacks on unidentified soft targets, although the attacks and targets were not specific to LGBTQIA+ venues," the agencies wrote in the public service announcement.
Nearly eight years ago, ISIS applauded the June 12, 2016, shooting at Pulse nightclub - when a gunman killed 49 and wounded 53 at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
"After the Pulse shooting, pro-ISIS messaging praised this attack as one of the high-profile attacks in Western countries, and FTO supporters celebrated it," the FBI and DHS wrote in the announcement.
While there's no evidence that ISIS directed or had prior knowledge of the attack, the shooter called 911 after the shooting began to pledge his allegiance to ISIS.
Javed Ali, the former senior counterterrorism director on the National Security Council, said members of the LGBTQ+ community have long been the target of terrorist groups.
"LGBQTIA+ members have drawn the ire of al-Qaida and ISIS supporters in the past based on their perceived lifestyles and beliefs," Ali, who is now an associate professor at the University of Michigan's Ford School of Public Policy, told ABC News. "However, the degree to which this announcement was driven by specific and credible intelligence about attacks here against this community, versus a more general abundance of caution based on Pride month, remains unclear."
Probing security measures at events, photography of security and unusual questioning about event security are all telltale signs that an attack might be planned, the FBI warned.
Last year, experts warned to cancel Pride events because of the threats they received.No major events were cancelled, however.
GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement to ABC News that Pride events "bring communities together" and that safety remains a priority for all LGBTQ gatherings.
"A fringe few extremists, domestically and overseas, are irrationally threatened by the rising tide of acceptance for LGBTQ people," Ellis said. "It is important to keep Prides safe for all attendees, and for people to keep showing up during Pride and throughout the year to speak up for the equality and safety of their communities and all marginalized people." NASA Administrator Bill Nelson on Monday named David Salvagnini as the agency’s new chief artificial intelligence (AI) officer, effective immediately. The role is an expansion of Salvagnini’s current role as chief data officer.
A wide variety of AI tools are used by NASA to benefit humanity from supporting missions and research projects across the agency, analyzing data to reveal trends and patterns, and developing systems capable of supporting spacecraft and aircraft autonomously.
“Artificial intelligence has been safely used at NASA for decades, and as this technology expands, it can accelerate the pace of discovery,” said Nelson. “It’s important that we remain at the forefront of advancement and responsible use. In this new role, David will lead NASA’s efforts to guide our agency’s responsible use of AI in the cosmos and on Earth to benefit all humanity.”
This appointment is in accordance with President Biden’s Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence. Salvagnini now is responsible for aligning the strategic vision and planning for AI usage across NASA. He serves as a champion for AI innovation, supporting the development and risk management of tools, platforms, and training.
In his expanded capacity, Salvagnini will continue NASA’s collaboration with other government agencies, academic institutions, industry partners, and other experts to ensure the agency is on the cutting edge of AI technology.
Salvagnini joined NASA in June 2023 after more than 20 years working in technology leadership in the intelligence community. Prior to his role at NASA, he served the Office of the Director of National Intelligence as director of the architecture and integration group and chief architect.
Salvagnini also worked in a variety of roles leading enterprise level IT research and development, engineering, and operations advancing data, IT, and artificial intelligence programs. David served in the Air Force for 21 years, retiring in May 2005 as a communications and computer systems officer.
NASA continues developing recommendations on leveraging emerging AI technology to best serve our goals and missions, from sifting through Earth science imagery to identifying areas of interest, to searching for data on planets outside our solar system from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, scheduling communications from the Perseverance Mars rover through the Deep Space Network, and more.
Prior to Salvagnini’s appointment, the agency’s Chief Scientist Kate Calvin served as NASA’s acting responsible AI official.

UK Defence Secretary Grant Shapps was on BBC Radio 4 this morning talking about support for Ukraine and the UK’s defence capability, including building “up to 28 ships”.
What are they?
He’s been talking the most today about six multi-role support ships (MRSS) for the Royal Marines, of which he told BBC News “we’ll definitely build the first three”.
The MRSS ships are described by the Ministry of Defence as being at the “concept” phase, which is the first stage of the process.
Another eight of the ships are Type 26 Frigates, of which the first three will enter service before 2030. Shapps said he had been “clambering all over” one of them in Scotland last week.
Five of the ships are Type 31 frigates, which are due to be in the fleet by 2030.
Two Astute Class submarines are currently under construction.
The four Dreadnought Class submarines will carry the UK’s nuclear deterrent when they enter service in the early 2030s. The Royal Navy’s annual report said construction of two of them was “well under way”.
And the last three are Fleet Solid Support ships, which are scheduled to begin production next year, with the first entering service by 2031.

NASA’s Juno mission captured these views of Jupiter during its 59th close flyby of the giant planet on March 7, 2024. They provide a good look at Jupiter’s colorful belts and swirling storms, including the Great Red Spot. Close examination reveals something more: two glimpses of the tiny moon Amalthea (see Figure B below).
With a radius of just 52 miles (84 kilometers), Amalthea has a potato-like shape, lacking the mass to pull itself into a sphere. In 2000, NASA’s Galileo spacecraft revealed some surface features, including impact craters, hills, and valleys. Amalthea circles Jupiter inside Io’s orbit, which is the innermost of the planet’s four largest moons, taking 0.498 Earth days to complete one orbit.
Amalthea is the reddest object in the solar system, and observations indicate it gives out more heat than it receives from the Sun. This may be because, as it orbits within Jupiter’s powerful magnetic field, electric currents are induced in the moon’s core. Alternatively, the heat could be from tidal stresses caused by Jupiter’s gravity.
At the time that the first of these two images was taken, the Juno spacecraft was about 165,000 miles (265,000 kilometers) above Jupiter’s cloud tops, at a latitude of about 5 degrees north of the equator.
Citizen scientist Gerald Eichstädt made these images using raw data from the JunoCam instrument, applying processing techniques to enhance the clarity of the images.
