Students at five UK universities have become the latest protesters to stage occupations to pressure their institutions into divesting funds from and ending partnerships with Israel.

Students set up encampments at the School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas) and at Oxford, Cambridge, Liverpool and Edinburgh universities. They are the latest in a global student uprising that is expected to build over the coming week across European campuses after starting at universities in the US, where hundreds of students and staff have been arrested for their involvement.

A joint statement from the organisers Oxford Action for Palestine and Cambridge for Palestine read: “Over 100 universities across the globe have now taken bold and urgent action for Palestine. As members of these institutions, we refuse to accept our universities’ complicity in Israel’s war crimes against the Palestinian people – and we refuse to stand by while they justify Israel’s campaign of mass slaughter, starvation, and displacement.”

The protesters at Oxford and Cambridge arrived on Monday morning with supplies, sleeping bags and cardboard signs bearing hand-painted slogans that stated: “There are no universities left in Gaza” and “Divest from genocide”. A large banner, reading “Welcome to the people’s university for Palestine”, was put up outside the encampment in front of the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford.

They have also demanded that Oxford and Cambridge universities divest from all companies linked to Israeli genocide and occupation, help rebuild Gaza’s education system, end institutional relationships with Israeli universities and protect the safety of students and staff involved in pro-Palestinian action.

More than 170 Oxford faculty and staff members signed a letter in support of the encampment and its aims.

Sneha Krishnan, an associate professor in human geography at the university, said it was “scandalous” that universities had not openly condemned Israel’s actions. “I strongly believe that students everywhere in the world are leading us in an important moral struggle at this moment,” she said.

Ana, a second-year undergraduate involved in the encampment at Oxford, said there was an “optimistic” atmosphere, with students working on essays alongside attending workshops. “It’s time for more than protests that happen every two weeks,” she said. “It’s time for us to be here … in place until the university accepts our demands.”

A third-year student at Oxford said the encampment would remain for “as long as it takes”, adding: “We have no fear of continuing to escalate until these demands are met.”

At the encampment on King’s Parade, Cambridge, events included deescalation training for protesters, a rally and a dinner funded by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. A crowdfunding campaign raised nearly £6,000 for the “vital supplies that will be necessary if our encampment is to be prolonged, persistent, and effective”.

Other universities involved in action so far include University College London, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, Leeds, Warwick, Swansea, Goldsmiths and Bristol in the UK; as well as Sciences Po in France, Trinity College Dublin, the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

A final year student representative of Manchester Camp of Resistance for Palestine, said camps were “popping up all across the country”, including at Liverpool on Monday, with organisers sharing knowledge and experiences. “No camps have closed over the past few days,” she noted.

Earlier in the week, Goldsmiths bowed to pressure from student occupiers and agreed to a new ethical investment policy, including considering switching fund manager; to write to the government urging it to call for a ceasefire; and to fund an undergraduate Palestinian scholarship.

A University of Oxford spokesperson said: “We respect our students and staff members’ right to freedom of expression in the form of peaceful protests. We ask everyone who is taking part to do so with respect, courtesy and empathy.”

A University of Cambridge spokesperson said: “The university is fully committed to academic freedom and freedom of speech within the law and we acknowledge the right to protest. We ask everyone in our community to treat each other with understanding and empathy. Our priority is the safety of all staff and students.

“We will not tolerate antisemitism, Islamophobia and any other form of racial or religious hatred, or other unlawful activity.”

However, due to the voluminous number of responsive pages, it was agreed in January of 2021, to limit the scope of search to May and June of 2020. That short span still resulted in the release of 2,260 pages of emails after nearly 3 1/2 years of waiting.

The emails comprise internal NIH messages, direct communications from medical professionals to Fauci, fan mail, hate mail, spam, and much more.

Gov. Joe Lombardo (R) has put his thumb on the scale in Congressional District 3 once again, endorsing video game music composer Marty O’Donnell in the Republican primary to take on Rep. Susie Lee (D-NV).

O’Donnell is a political newcomer who has never previously run for office. He launched his first ad of the cycle Wednesday, focusing on border security and casting immigration as harmful to “American workers.”

Congressional District 3 is routinely the closest House race in Nevada and a target for in-state and national Republicans alike. O’Donnell comes with the benefit of being a self-funder and is working with consultants who ran the governor’s successful 2022 campaign.

This is not Lombardo’s first endorsement in either this race or across federal elections — a sign of his increasing efforts to build out his own political apparatus, separate from the state party, to rival Democrats’ historically well-organized machine. He previously endorsed Assemblywoman Heidi Kasama (R-Las Vegas) for the House seat, but she ended up dropping out of the race after consulting with the governor and is running again for her competitive Assembly seat.

Her victory there could help protect Lombardo’s veto power, with a Democratic statehouse supermajority a possibility in 2024.

O’Donnell faces a crowded primary of other self-funded candidates, including former state Treasurer Dan Schwartz. Schwartz has already loaned his campaign $800,000 to O’Donnell’s $500,000, giving the former treasurer more cash on hand at the end of the first quarter.

Other candidates include tax analyst Drew Johnson and former state Sen. Elizabeth Helgelien.

Despite the attention and resources from Republicans, Lee has won three straight elections, including a victory by 4 percentage points in 2022. Her fundraising dwarfs her potential competitors; she has a war chest of over $2.1 million.

Fani Willis Fails to Answer Public Records Lawsuit – Judicial Watch Files Motion for ‘Default Judgment’

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch announced today that it asked the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia, to declare a default judgment against District Attorney Fani Willis in Judicial Watch’s lawsuit seeking records of communications Willis had with Special Counsel Jack Smith and the House January 6 Committee.

The lawsuit was filed in the Superior Court of Fulton County, GA, after Willis and the county denied having any records responsive to an August 2023 Georgia Open Records Act request for communications with the Special Counsel’s office and/or the January 6 Committee (Judicial Watch Inc. v. Fani Willis et al. (No. 24-CV-002805)). (Judicial Watch dismissed Fulton County from the lawsuit.)

In its motion Judicial Watch noted that Willis was served with the lawsuit on March 11, 2024, but that she has not yet answered it:

Defendant has not filed an answer and no answer has been served upon [Judicial Watch].… Defendant’s answer was due 30 days after service, or on April 10, 2024. Pursuant to [Georgia law] the case automatically became in default when an answer was not filed by the due date. Further pursuant to that Code section, Defendant was permitted as a matter of right to open the default within 15 days of the day of default, or by April 25, 2024.

Judicial Watch asserts it is now entitled to a verdict and judgment by default.

In its lawsuit Judicial Watch states that Willis’ “representation about not having records responsive to the request is likely false.” Judicial Watch refers to a December 5, 2023, letter from House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan to Willis that cites a December 2021, letter from Willis to then-House January 6 Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson. In that letter Willis requested assistance from the committee and offered to travel to DC.

Judicial Watch also cited news reports and other records which “indicate that representatives of Willis’s office traveled to Washington, DC, and met with January 6 Select Committee staffers in April, May, and November 2022, as Willis proposed in her December 17, 2021 letter …”

Judicial Watch has several Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuits related to the prosecutorial abuse targeting Trump:

In February 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice asked a federal court to allow the agency to keep secret the names of top staffers working in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s office that is targeting former President Donald Trump and other Americans.

(Before his appointment to investigate and prosecute Trump, Specia Counsel Jack Smith previously was at the center of several controversial issues, the IRS scandal among them. In 2014, a Judicial Watch investigation revealed that top IRS officials had been in communication with Jack Smith’s then-Public Integrity Section about a plan to launch criminal investigations into conservative tax-exempt groups. In January 2024, Judicial Watch filed lawsuit against Fulton County, Georgia, for records regarding the hiring of Nathan Wade as a special prosecutor by District Attorney Fani Willis. Wade was hired to pursue unprecedented criminal investigations and prosecutions against former President Trump and others over the 2020 election disputes.

Sen. Grove‘s Measure to Make Purchasing a Child for Sex a Felony, Rejected by Senate Public Safety Committee

Today, the Senate Public Safety Committee forced hostile amendments on Senator Shannon Grove and passed her bill, Senate Bill 1414 (SB 1414) out of committee without her consent.

Senator Grove presented SB 1414 which seeks to strengthen protections for minor victims by making the act of soliciting, agreeing to engage in or engaging in any form of commercial sex with a child a felony offense, with sex offender registry required on repeat offenses. SB 1414 is a bipartisan measure, joint authored by Senator Anna Caballero (D-Merced) and Senator Susan Rubio (D-Baldwin Park), and co-sponsored by Love Never Fails and 3Strands Global Foundation.

Instead of voting on Senator Grove’s bill as proposed, members of the committee instead forced hostile amendments and voted the bill out of committee without Senator Grove’s consent. Now, instead of making the purchase of all children a felony, the committee has made the solicitation or purchase of children for sex punishable by a wobbler, which can still be charged as a misdemeanor, punishable by as little as 2 days in jail or up to a $10,000 fine.

A felony can only be charged if the child solicited or purchased was 15 years old or younger, and unfortunately, the buyer would still be ineligible for prison. If a buyer has a previous conviction of purchasing a child under 16 years old and is convicted on a second offense of buying child under 16 years old and the victim and buyer are more than 10 years apart in age, only then would the buyer have to register as a tier one sex offender (10-years).

“I’m incredibly disappointed that not only did my colleagues reject my proposal to make the buying of children for sex a prison felony, but that I was blindsided when they amended my bill without my consent," said Senator Grove.

“Children of all ages deserve to be protected under the law and a simple fine after buying a child for sex is not an appropriate punishment. Californians across the state have made their voices heard and they want this law changed. Unfortunately, the members of the public safety committee continue their soft on crime approach at the expense of California’s most vulnerable, our children," concluded Senator Grove.

Senator Grove is actively discussing the next steps with her joint authors, coalition of survivors and advocates who are deeply invested in the outcome of this bill. She is committed to continuing the fight for all victims and survivors of sexual exploitation.

The mayor of a small town in Illinois has been accused of sexually abusing young boys while working at a juvenile corrections facility, according to a bombshell new lawsuit.

Filed in the Illinois Court of Claims, the lawsuit viewed by DailyMail.com claims at least 95 victims were abused while staying at juvenile corrections facilities and lists several repeat abusers.

The longtime mayor of Eldorado, Rocky James, 59, is accused of harassing and assaulting at least six boys in the 1990s and 2000s. He has denied the allegations.

One victim, who was 13 years old when he was housed at the Illinois Youth Center Harrisburg facility, said James repeatedly groped him and made masturbatory gestures toward him.

'A few times during [the victim's] stay in the confinement unit, all of the mattresses were revoked from the confinement cells. During these occasions, James told [the victim] that he would give him his mattress back if he masturbated him or administered oral copulation on him,' the lawsuit said.

James has been the mayor of Eldorado since 2007 and in a March 2011 story for the Harrisburg Register, James said he had been employed with the Department of Juvenile Justice at the Illinois Youth Center-Harrisburg for over 26 years and held the title of juvenile justice supervisor.

A boy who was 15 to 16 years old in 2002 and 2003 said James and another correctional officer would force him to perform oral sex on them, penetrate him with their fingers and force the victim to have sexual intercourse with them.

In 2006 to 2007, another 15 to 16-year-old victim claimed James and another officer threatened to write him up and send him to confinement if he did not comply with their abuse.

'[The victim] was scared and uncomfortable but succumbed to their coercion. James put his hands down [the victim] pants and masturbated him, and then [another officer] administered oral sex on [the victim] and sodomized him while James watched and masturbated himself,' the lawsuit said.

One victim who was 16 years old when he was housed at the Illinois Youth Center Harrisburg facility in 2006 said James grabbed and slapped his buttocks on multiple occasions.

'On one occasion, when [the victim] was in his cell in the afternoon, James entered [the victims] cell, exposed himself and put his penis on [the victims] bare leg. James told [the victim] to 'be a good boy,' and he tried coaxing [the victim] to perform oral copulation on him,' the lawsuit said.

A victim who was 14 to 16 years old in 1999 when he alleged James abused him said hogtied him and force him to perform oral sex in order to be released.

James allegedly coerced that victim to sign a piece of paper confessing to sexually abusing another inmate in order to cover up the abuse that James performed.

In his keynote address for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's annual National Commemoration of the Days of Remembrance, Biden aimed to cool a divided and divisive U.S. debate about Jewish security, Zionism, free speech and support for Israel, in the country with the largest Jewish population after Israel.

Kenneth Stern, director of the Bard Center for the Study of Hate, who helped craft a modern "working definition of antisemitism," said the word is being misused to stifle protected speech about Israel.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill last week that would apply the definition Stern helped develop to enforce federal anti-discrimination laws on college campuses. Stern opposes the bill.

"I don't think that you can combat hatred of any type effectively with weak democratic institutions," said Stern. "When we have a government that decides it's going to stop certain things from being said, that creates an opportunity for totalitarianism, authoritarianism, and that's never good for the Jews."

Full disclosure: We at Spaceweather.com do enjoy our Starlink internet, especially during cosmic ray balloon recoveries in remote parts of the Sierra Nevada mountains where cell service is unavailable. It's great. But there is no question that SpaceX is conducting a giant uncontrolled experiment by filling low-Earth orbit with unprecedented numbers of satellites. Bright lines criss-crossing astrophotos aren't the only problem. Harmful changes to Earth's atmosphere and ecosystems are possible, too, along with catastrophic cascade collisions in Earth orbit.

According to the IAU, the number of Starlink-like satellites launched by SpaceX and competitors could grow from the current value near 5800 to more than 500,000 in the years ahead. Is that really a good idea?
