A terror apologist stood no chance against Mosab Yousef, the son of a Hamas commander during an episode Tuesday on Dr. Phil.

Yousef, also known as the Green Prince, grew up in the West Bank and his father was a co-founder of the Hamas terror group. He served as a Palestinian ex-militant until 1997 when he defected to Israel.

He worked as an undercover agent for the Shin Bet until he immigrated to the United States in 2007.

Yousef leans on his experience to expertly point out there is no difference between Hamas and the Palestinians on the West Bank because they support Hamas and are giving them cover. When the activist accused him of promoting colonialism, he responded by pointing out she had no authority to represent Palestinians and that she was promoting the cause of Hamas.

She was further left stunned when he responded yes to her question regarding whether Hamas and Palestinians are the same, not listening to his point at the beginning.

Yousef then dropped the hammer on her when she refused to condemn the Hamas terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

The destruction was so thorough her mouth was left gaping in shock.

YOUSEF: Now we have the problem of the pro-Palestine who are actually giving Hamas cover. They are participants in the crime. In fact, since October 7th, I personally don’t differentiate between Hamas and so-called Palestinians because, actually, there is no Palestinians.

There are tribes. There is the tribe of Hamas, and there is the tribe of Islamic Jihad, and there is the tribe of Khalil, and there is the tribe of Nablus, and each one has different interests, and all of them are conflicted. If they did not have Israel as the common enemy, they would kill each other. This is the reality of so-called Palestine.

ACTIVIST: Do you realize that’s common colonial rhetoric?

YOUSEF: You don’t know what Palestine is. In fact, the keffiyeh that you are wearing, this is just a statement to show that you really lack the authenticity to represent the case, and what’s so-called “the cause,” this is a human problem. The cause must die.

I think enough is enough, and now it is proven, you are helping Hamas to prove it to the world that Palestine depends on the destruction of the State of Israel, and this is not acceptable, and we are not going to agree to it.

And I tell you something, for the next 10 or 20 years, the Palestinian people will pay the bill that Hamas has cost today, and most likely today.

ACTIVIST: Do you think Hamas and Palestinians are the same? They’re one and the same?

YOUSEF: After October 7th, yes, there is no difference.

YOUSEF: The vast majority of the Palestinian people support Hamas.

The Biden regime is already putting in place plansto stop President Donald Trump from firing members of the deep stateshould he take back the White House this November.

The Office of Personnel Management, the principal agency overseeing federal government employees, has introduced guidelines preventing career civil servants from being reassigned as political appointees who can be terminated more swiftly from their positions.

This move is a response to Trump’s ‘Schedule F’ directive in 2020, which sought to reclassify the role of tens of thousands of federal employees, essentially making it easier to fire them.

In a White House statement on Thursday, Biden said he was introducing “the final rule to protect nonpartisan civil servants” that would “protections for 2.2 million career civil servants from political interference, to guarantee that they can carry out their responsibilities in the best interest of the American people.”

He continued:

Day in and day out, career civil servants provide the expertise and continuity necessary for our democracy to function. They provide Americans with life-saving and life-changing services and put opportunity within reach for millions. That’s why since taking office, I have worked to strengthen, empower, and rebuild our career workforce.

[This is] a step toward combatting corruption and partisan interference to ensure civil servants are able to focus on the most important task at hand: delivering for the American people.

House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman, Republican JamesComer, argued the ruling would allow federal employees to be unaccountable:

OPM’s final rule is yet another example of the Biden Administration’s efforts to insulate the federal workforce from accountability. The federal workforce exists to serve the American people, yet many Americans have a deep and growing distrust of the federal bureaucracy.

The Biden Administration’s rule will further undermine Americans’ confidence in their government since it allows poor performing federal workers and those who attempt to thwart the policies of a duly elected President to remain entrenched in the federal bureaucracy. We need more accountability for the unelected federal bureaucracy, not less.

Such a plan is ultimately designed to prevent Trump from firing the sort of deep state actors that successfully undermined his first term in office.

If Trump returns to the White House and wants to overturn the regulations, he would need to draft new rules through the Office of Personnel Management. This lengthy process would entail soliciting public feedback on any proposed alterations and also open him open to legal challenges.

Trump has repeatedly stated that he will seek to unravel the influence of the deep state over the course of his second term. “We will pass critical reforms making every executive branch employee fireable by the president of the United States,” Trump said back in 2022. “The deep state must and will be brought to heel.”

A RELATIVELY NEW REPORT OUTLINES HOW UNIVERSITIES NATIONWIDE HAVE SIGNED OVER STUDENTS’ PRIVATE FERPA DATA TO A THIRD-PARTY VENDOR THAT REVIEWS THEIR PERSONAL INFORMATION TO HELP STUDY COLLEGE STUDENTS’ VOTING TRENDS.

The nine-page report describes how a national voting study run out of Tufts’ Institute for Democracy in Higher Educationgets university administrators from across the country to agree to release students’ Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, enrollment data from the National Student Clearinghouse, where its kept, to a voter data company.

“This is an extraordinary violation of student privacy and is not consistent with FERPA,” said Heather Honey, an investigator with Verity Vote, in a recent interview with The College Fix.

Verity Vote is an organization that works to ensure government transparency, including election integrity issues, she said, and published its findings on the student voting issue in July 2023.

At issue isTufts’ institute’s National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement, launched during the Obamaadministration in response to a “call to action,” the report states.

But as recently as February, the U.S. Department of Education encouraged-colleges and universities to take part in the study to “use their own campus reports to see where there are gaps among their students in registering, and all schools can use the national dataset to determine target populations.”

The study is “a service to colleges and universities interested in learning their students’ aggregate voter registration and turnout rates in national elections since 2012,” as described on its website.

“NSLVE data are the result of matching student enrollment records with public voting files,” the FAQ section states.More than 1,200 campuses participate in the study.

For a university to participate, its leaders sign a two-page contract that statesadministrators are allowing the National Student Clearinghouse to release their students’ FERPA data to a “third party vendor,” a company not named in the contract, according to the 2022-2033 reauthorization form.

“The third party vendor of choice from inception until recently hasbeen Catalist, the Democrat’s exclusive voter data provider. Tufts maintains a relationship with Catalist but also has an agreement with L2 Political for analysis of the NSC data,” the report states.

The report alleges that campus leaders “may have been duped into authorizing disclosure of highly sensitive private student data to a partisan private corporation that works exclusively with Democrats and progressives under the guise of a dubious ‘study exception’ to FERPA’s prohibitions against sharing of the data.”

Tufts University spokesman Peter Collins told The College Fix via email on Tuesday the institute switched to L2 in 2018.

The report also argues the release of thedata does not fall under FERPA’s exceptions, which must fall under one of three categories: to “develop, validate, or administer predictive tests”; “administer student aid programs”; or “improve instruction.”==

The two-page contract that the universities sign states the data is needed to improve instruction:

“NSLVE offers colleges and universities an opportunity to measure the voting and registration rates of their students, to use such information to study the effectiveness and improve the instruction of its educational programs, and to increase student civic learning and engagement in democracy. IDHE shall also use the Institution’s de-identified enrollment data for publishing aggregate reports regarding student civic learning and engagement in democracy which do not identify Institution.”..

Influential data scientist Aaron Strauss sparked controversy in Democrat circles when he recently urged Democrat donors to stop registering young voters and black voters in the runup of the 2024 election – because they will likely vote for Trump.

The black vote and youth vote is trending towards Trump in 2024 as Joe Biden continues his planned destruction of America’s economy, borders, and foreign policy.

In recent years, however, there has been a marked shift among the roughly one in five citizens of voting age who are unregistered toward Republicans, raising fresh questions about how much boosting nonpartisan voter registration could help presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump heading into November.

Aaron Strauss, an influential data scientist who helps direct progressive spending at the firm OpenLabs, sparked private disagreements over this issue in January when he sent about a dozen major Democratic donors a confidential memo that challenged traditional nonpartisan registration.

Polls in recent months have regularly shown Biden polling below 2020 levels among Black and Latino voters. A recent Quinnipiac University poll found Biden pulling support from 60 percent of Black voters and 34 percent of Hispanic voters in a five way race with Trump and three third-party candidates. Exit polls in 2020 showed Biden winning 87 percent of the Black voter and 65 percent of the Latino vote.

"A top boffin at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) says that the titanic machine may possibly create or discover previously unimagined scientific phenomena, or 'unknown unknowns' - for instance 'an extra dimension'. The LHC, built inside a 27-km circular subterranean tunnel deep beneath the Franco-Swiss border outside Geneva, functions like a sort of orbital motorway for extremely high-speed hadrons - typically either protons or lead ions. These collisions are sufficiently violent that they are expected to briefly create conditions similar to those obtaining countless aeons ago, not long after the Big Bang, when the entire universe was still unconceivably small - it was smaller than a proton for quite some time, seemingly, still with all the stuff that nowadays makes up all the supra-enormity of space and galaxies and so forth packed in somehow. It's certainly to be hoped that the button marked 'Call Black Hole Into Being' on the control board has some kind of flip-down cover over it.

Obviously all that's utter rubbish. But some boffins have speculated that black holes might alternatively act as spacewarp wormhole portals into alternate universes, or something. This would seem to chime with Bertolucci's remarks this week on hyperdimensional 'doors' out of which might come unspecified 'somethings'. Anyone who has watched a TV, read any sci-fi or seen any movies will be well aware that hyperdimensional spacewarp wormhole portals don't normally lead to anything boring like empty space, parallel civilisations where humanity lives in peace and harmony or anything like that.

Rather, it seems a racing cert thatwe're looking here at an imminent visit from a race of carnivorous dinosaur-men, the superhuman clone hive-legions of some evil genetic queen-empress, infinite polypantheons of dark nega-deities imprisoned for aeons and hungering to feast upon human souls, a parallel-history victorious Nazi globo-Reich or something of that type.

We took the matter up with Dr Mike Lamont, a control-room boffin at the LHC. 'We're hoping to see supersymmetry and extra dimensions,' he confirmed. 'There's no maths in it,' added Lamont encouragingly, having assessed the intellectual level of the Reg news team with disconcerting percipience.

Summarising, then, it appears that we might be in for some kind of invasion by

spontaneously swelling and shrinking spherical or wheel-shaped creatures - something on the order of the huge rumbling stone ball from Indiana Jones - able to move in and out of our plane at will. Dr Bertolucci later got in touch to confirm that yes indeed, there would be an 'open door', but that even with the power of the LHC at his disposal he would only be able to hold it open 'a very tiny lapse of time, 10-26 seconds, [but] during that infinitesimal amount of time we would be able to peer into this open door, either by getting something out of it or sending something into it. In 2020, underlying cancer deaths followed the trend and dropped to about 1021 deaths per 100,000 people. Cancer deaths rose to 1049 per 100,000 in 2021, then increased again to 1091 per 100,000 in 2022.

The data from 2022 shows a 6.85% rise in underlying cancer mortality rates per 100,000 people when compared to 2020. This is particularly noteworthy because it reverses a longstanding trend of declining cancer death rates. Moreover, when compared to the 2010 to 2019 trend, the rate of underlying cancer deaths in 2022 exceeded expectations by 11% to 12%.

Based on an analysis of TB cases among individuals from the top 30 countries of origin in terms of non-US-born TB burden between 2003 and 2015, we describe how TB risks vary within the non-US-born population according to age, years since entry, entry year, and country of origin. Variation along each of these dimensions is associated with more than 10-fold differences in the risk of developing active TB, and this risk is also positively associated with TB incidence estimates for the country of origin and the composition of the migrant pool in the entry year. TB disproportionately affects poor and marginalized populations

The sub-standard conditions in which some migrants may be forced to travel, live and work, can increase their vulnerability or exposure to TB. Migrants, regardless of their legal status, may face food insecurity and malnutrition, or end up facing systemic barriers to accessing health care. Other vulnerable populations may be detained in over-crowded facilities or live in camps as refugees or internally displaced persons, with no or inadequate access to TB medicine, which can lead to the development of drug-resistant forms of TB.

All of the above are major risk factors for TB, and therefore, the realization of true Universal Health Coverage, one that leaves no migrant behind, is critical in ensuring that TB is eradicated for everyone one day.

Stigma and discrimination remain major obstacles in tackling TB worldwide

Because important public health messaging often fails to reach the most vulnerable people in a society, TB health literacy is relatively low among migrants and refugees: migrants with pulmonary and extra-pulmonary TB may be unaware of the signs and symptoms, which makes them less likely to seek treatment, or know how to protect their loved ones from catching it. Those who are informed and have identified their symptoms — persistent cough, night sweats and weight loss — may be reluctant to provide this medical history to health workers, for fear of stigmatization or losing the opportunity to be resettled.

In order to adequately tackle this global challenge, it is critical that migrants and refugees be informed in their own languages of the risks of TB, and that they feel safe enough to seek help, without fear of stigmatization, arrest or deportation.

The country will not necessarily make the bloc stronger and may cause a global war, Alessandro Minuto-Rizzo has said

NATO has significantly benefited from the Ukraine conflict, but allowing the country to join is not advisable, according to Alessandro Minuto-Rizzo, former deputy secretary general of the the US-led military bloc.

Moscow has cited NATO’s unchecked expansion in Europe as one of the key points of contention with the US and its allies. Its increased presence in Ukraine since a 2014 coup in the country is among the causes of the present hostilities, according to Russian officials.Kiev claims it is protecting Europe from Russia and therefore deserves a place in the bloc.

The Italian diplomat, who served in NATO from 2001 to 2007, and briefly acted as its head during the transition from Secretary General George Robertson to Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, said he did not believe that allowing Ukraine to join was “the best response” under the circumstances.

”There is no need at all to have Ukraine as a NATO member. I’m not sure that it will support the strength of the alliance – and also because it is controversial,” he told the British tabloid Sun.

If Ukraine becomes a NATO member, then immediately you change the character of the war – it will be a war of Russia against NATO countries.

Moscow perceives the Ukraine conflict as part of a US-led proxy war against Russia. NATO is a geopolitical tool, according to Russian officials, which Washington uses to enforce its goals on European members. The Americans intend to continue hostilities “to the last Ukrainian,” the Kremlin has claimed.

Minuto-Rizzo asserted that the conflict has made NATO stronger by invigorating it and pushing two previously neutral Western nations – Finland and Sweden – into its ranks. Collectively, the 32 present members have far more weapons, soldiers and funding than Russia does, he pointed out, so there is no threat of Moscow initiating a direct conflict.

”I can’t understand why Russia would invade Romania or Poland for instance,” he said. Kiev and its backers have maintained that by arming Ukraine, the West is defending itself from Russian aggression.

But Russia could “upgrade” hostilities, for example, in response to a deployment of NATO troops to Ukraine, potentially resulting in a world war, Minuto-Rizzo added.

Regarding President Vladimir Putin, the former official characterized him as moderate and willing to compromise, in contrast to some other Russian politicians. In 2021, Moscow offered the West a diplomatic way to defuse tension over NATO expansion and Ukraine, but the appeal was rejected by Washington.

(Some NATO members want a terrorist group to do their dirty work for them. Ukraine will not be allowed in NATO, many states say its impossible due to its ongoing corruption.)

This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope features Arp 72, a very selective galaxy group that only includes two galaxies interacting due to gravity: NGC 5996 (the large spiral galaxy) and NGC 5994 (its smaller companion, in the lower left of the image). Both galaxies lie approximately 160 million light-years from Earth, and their cores are separated from each other by a distance of about 67,000 light-years. The distance between the galaxies at their closest points is even smaller, closer to 40,000 light-years. While this might sound vast, in galactic separation terms it is really quite close. For comparison, the distance between the Milky Way and its nearest independent galactic neighbor Andromeda is around 2.5 million light-years. Alternatively, the distance between the Milky Way and its largest and brightest satellite galaxy, the Large Magellanic Cloud (satellite galaxies orbit around another galaxy), is about 162,000 light-years.

Given this and the fact that NGC 5996 is roughly comparable in size to the Milky Way, it is not surprising that NGC 5996 and NGC 5994 — separated by only about 40,000 light-years — are interacting with one another. In fact, the interaction likely distorted NGC 5996’s spiral shape. It also prompted the formation of the very long and faint tail of stars and gas curving away from NGC 5996, up to the top right of the image. This ‘tidal tail’ is a common phenomenon that appears when galaxies closely interact and is visible in other Hubble images of interacting galaxies.

One of the first places I discovered when I moved to California in the late 1980s was the 99 Cents Only Store. One of my apartments was in walking distance of one, and I could buy a week's groceries for $20. Those halcyon days are long gone, not just for me and others, but for the iconic 99 Cents Only Store. Just what we all wanted, even more ads to deal with in our everyday life

A new patent recently filed by TV and streaming device manufacturer Roku hints toward a possible future where televisions could display ads when you pause a movie or game.

For Roku, the time in which the TV is on but users aren’t doing anything is valuable. The company has started leasing out ad space in its popular Roku City screensaver—which appears when your TV is idle—to companies like McDonald’s and movies like Barbie. As tech newsletter Lowpass points out, Roku finds this idle time and its screensaver so valuable that it forbids app developers from overriding the screensaver with their own. But, if you plug in an Xbox or DVD player into the HDMI port on a Roku TV, you bypass the company’s screensaver and other ads. And so, Roku has been figuring out a way to not let that happen.

As reported by Lowpass on April 4, Roku recently filed a patent for a technology that would let it inject ads into third-party content—like an Xbox game or Netflix movie—using an HDMI connection. The patent describes a situation where you are playing a video game and hit pause to go check your phone or grab some food. At this point, Roku would identify that you have paused the content and display a relevant ad until you unpaused the game.

How Roku’s HDMI ad tech works, according to the patent

Roku’s tech isn’t designed to randomly inject ads as you are playing a game or watching a movie, it knows that would be going too far and anger people. Instead, the patent suggests several ways that Roku could spot when your TV is paused, like comparing frames, to make sure the user has actually paused the content. Roku might also use the HDMI’s audio feed to search for extended moments of silence. The company also proposes using HDMI CEC—a protocol designed to help devices communicate better—to figure out when you pause and unpause content.

Similarly, Roku’s patent explains that it will use various methods to detect what people are playing or watching and try to display relevant ads. So if it sees you have an Xbox plugged in, it might try to serve you ads that it thinks an Xbox owner would be interested in.

If this all sounds horrible and dystopian—a future where we can’t even pause our offline, old DVD movies without seeing an ad for something—keep in mind that Roku hasn’t moved forward on these plans yet. Your Roku TV isn’t going to start placing ads for Disney+ on your Call of Duty pause screen tonight.

But when you consider that Roku lost over $40 million in 2023 on hardware sales and made $1.6 billion on ads and services that same year, it seems like this HDMI ad injection patent might end up being a thing one day. If someone buys a cheap Roku TV and never uses the apps, just uses it to play Xbox or PS5, then Roku effectively loses money from that sale. This patent would let it squeeze even more dollars out of everyone.

And because companies are addicted to “number go up”, well, I tend to bet on Roku and others eventually doing whatever it takes to make said numbers grow bigger and bigger, damned be the consequences. These companies will keep shoving more and more ads onto your screen, making it harder to enjoy the actual content you want to see, regardless of how it might ruin your experience.

At first glance, the search for life beyond Earth might not seem related to human illness, but to biochemist Steven Benner, the connection is clear.

“In diagnostics for an infectious disease, you’re looking for alien life inside of a patient,” said Benner, who has spent nearly two decades conducting NASA-funded research on what alien life might look like at the molecular level.

“It’s actually a bit easier to build a diagnostics assay to detect COVID than to build an agnostic life finder to search for Martian DNA, whose structure would be unknown,” he said.

Benner is the co-founder and CEO of Firebird Diagnostics LLC, based in Alachua, Florida, which sells synthetic DNA and molecule packages to researchers, who use them to develop tools to detect and treat ailments like cancer, hepatitis, and HIV. The company also sold COVID tests during the pandemic.

Benner holds that while some of what we know about biochemistry on Earth may be universal, most is Earth-specific. He and his partners developed DNA-like molecular systems with six and eight nucleotides, or building blocks, based on research funded partly by NASA’s Astrobiology Program. These systems add to the four building blocks in Earth-based DNA an additional two or four synthetic nucleotides.

Mary Voytek, head of the Astrobiology Program at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said Benner’s work shows there are alternatives to Earth-based biological molecules, “This helps us understand what else is possible and may be found in life beyond Earth.”

Striking new photos show a perfect dashed line of light left behind by a dying SpaceX rocket in the night sky above Arizona. The luminous streak, which is the result of some clever photo trickery, is the latest reminder of the company's rapidly increasing launch schedule.

On Saturday (March 30th), SpaceX launched two of their Falcon 9 rockets in less than four hours, Space.com reported. The first rocket, which was carrying the Eutelsat 36D telecommunications satellite, took off at 5:52 p.m. EDT from NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida. The second rocket, which was carrying 23 of the company's Starlink satellites, launched from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Center, located next door to KSC, at 9:30 p.m. EDT.

After deploying their payloads, the rockets' second stages — the main part of the rocket that separates from the rocket's reusable boosters — underwent controlled deorbit burns, which caused them to fall toward Earth and burn up in the planet's upper atmosphere.

Photographer Jeremy Perez had initially planned to capture the deorbit burn of the first rocket from near his home in Flagstaff, AZ but was left empty-handed due to thick cloud coverage. But by the time the second rocket began the same maneuver, the skies had cleared and Perez was able to catch some stunning images of the deorbiting debris, Spaceweather.com reported.

In the new images, Perez combined multiple long-exposure shots of the ignited second stage as it passed overhead. The breaks in the luminous streak represent points where the camera's shutter was closed.

In real-time the event appeared very differently: "It looked like a delicate, cometary dandelion poof drifting overhead," Perez told Spaceweather.com. The light also appeared white in real-time instead of the bright blues seen in the photos, he added.

In zoomed-in versions of the photos, you can also see a second dimmer line alongside the falling space junk. This streak is made up of light from the satellites deployed by the rocket, which were drifting alongside it before it started its final maneuver.

An increasingly common sight

Saturday's twin launches were not the only SpaceX launches this week.

On Monday (April 1), another Falcon 9 lifted off from the Vandenburg Space Force base in California and later deployed 22 more Starlink satellites into orbit, Space.com reported. The company also plans to launch two more Falcon 9 rockets on Friday (April 5) and Sunday (April 7), which will both deploy more satellites into orbit, according to SpaceFlightNow.com.

The continued increase in SpaceX launches greatly enhances the chances of people seeing deorbiting material or other phenomena caused by the dying rockets, such as SpaceX spirals — swirls of light created by frozen rocket fuel ejected from deorbiting Falcon 9 boosters. For example, on March 4, one of these spirals briefly outshone the northern lights across large parts of the Arctic.

Falcon 9 rockets can also be seen for miles as they rise into space and can occasionally punch holes in the upper atmosphere, triggering blood-red aurora-like light shows.

But these light shows are not the only aspect of these ever-increasing launches that are catching people's eyes. Experts are also concerned with the number of Starlink satellites that are being deployed into low-Earth orbit, which are obscuring our ability to study the cosmos.

When these newly-launched satellites inevitably fail and are sent to burn up in the upper atmosphere, they will also release high levels of metal pollution in our skies, which could have potentially damaging impacts.

New York City will pay out $17.5 million to settle a lawsuit brought by two Muslim women who claim their religious rights were violated when they were instructed to remove their hijabs for arrest photos, court records filed Friday show.

Jamilla Clark and Arwa Aziz sued the city in 2018 after they were arrested for violating protective orders and ordered to remove their head coverings so mug shots could be taken, according to court documents. The city agreed to a settlement with the two and, after accounting for legal and administrative fees, is expected to pay out just over $13 million split among people who were told to remove religious head coverings for mug shots between March 2014 and August 2021.

The New York Police Department amended its policy in 2020 to allow people to have their mug shots taken in religious headwear, so long as it doesn’t cover their faces, according to the New York Times.

“This settlement resulted in a positive reform for the NYPD,” a spokesperson for the New York City Law Department told the DCNF.

“The agreement carefully balances the department’s respect for firmly held religious beliefs with the important law enforcement need to take arrest photos,” the spokesperson continued. “This resolution was in the best interest of all parties.”

In New York City, authorities issue orders of protection to safeguard individuals from people who are “abusing, harassing, threatening, and/or intimidating” them, according to the New York Police Department.

NYPD declined to comment and referred the DCNF to the city’s law department.

Settlements will range from $7,824 to $13,125, according to a website maintained by lawyers representing the Muslim women. That settlement is subject to approval from Judge Analisa Torres of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the NYT reported.

“When they forced me to take off my hijab, I felt as if I were naked; I’m not sure if words can capture how exposed and violated I felt,” Clark said, according to the NYT.

Lawyers for Clark and Aziz estimate thatat least 3,600 people qualify for compensationunder this settlement, NYT reported.

Ambitious new dark matter-hunting experiment delivers 1st results

While the Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD) developed by the University of Chicago and the U.S. Department of Energy's Fermilab hasn't turned up dark matter particles just yet, the new results place a tighter constraint on the type of characteristics scientists can expect such particles to have. The BREAD experiment itself also served up an exciting new recipe that could be used in the hunt for dark matter — a relatively inexpensive one that doesn't take up a vast amount of space.

BREAD takes a "broadband" approach to search for hypothetical dark matter particles called "axions" and associated "dark photons" across a larger set of possibilities than other experiments, albeit with slightly less precision.

"If you think about it like a radio, the search for dark matter is like tuning the dial to search for one particular radio station, except there are a million frequencies to check through," University of Chicago scientist and BREAD project co-leader David Miller said in a statement. "Our method is like doing a scan of 100,000 radio stations, rather than a few very thoroughly."

A small experiment to tackle a big problem

Dark matter represents a huge problem for scientists because, despite the fact it makes up around 85% of the matter in the universe and its influence prevents galaxies from flying apart as they spin, we have little idea what it is made of.

That is in part because dark matter is effectively invisible; it doesn't seem to interact with light, neither emitting nor reflecting standard photons. That lack of electromagnetic interaction suggests that dark matter isn't composed of the protons, neutrons and electrons that comprise "normal matter" objects like stars, planets, moons, our bodies and the cat next door.

Though our telescopes can't detect dark matter directly, the stuff does affect stars, galaxies, and even light via its interactions with gravity. So astronomers can tell that something is there — they just don't know what it is. Knowing what to look for and exactly where to look is a different matter.

"We’re very confident that something is there, but there are many, many forms it could take," said Miller.

This confusion has sent scientists on the hunt for different particles with strange properties that could comprise dark matter. One such candidate is the axion, a hypothetical particle with an extremely small mass. Should axions exist, they may interact with a so-called dark photon just as everyday matter interacts with "ordinary" photons. This interaction could occasionally prompt the creation of a visible photon under certain circumstances.

BREAD is a coaxial dish antenna in the shape of a curved metal tube that can fit on a tabletop. The experiment is designed to catch photons and funnel them to a sensor at one end to search for a subset of possible axions.

The full-scale BREAD experiment will see the equipment sit within a strong magnetic field, which the team says will increase the chances of the conversion of axons to photons. As a proof of principle, the team conducted a BREAD experiment minus the magnets needed to generate this field.

The proto-BREAD experiment ran at the University of Chicago for a month and delivered some interesting data, whetting the team's appetite for the full-scale experiment. The test results showed that BREAD was highly sensitive in the range of frequencies that the team had designed it to probe.

"This is just the first step in a series of exciting experiments we are planning," BREAD co-leader and Fermilab researcher Andrew Sonnenschein said. "We have many ideas for improving the sensitivity of our axion search."

The test also demonstrated that particle physics can be done on a tabletop as well as in huge particle accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which runs for 17 miles (27 kilometers) deep under the border between France and Switzerland.

"This result is a milestone for our concept, demonstrating for the first time the power of our approach," said Stefan Knirck, the Fermilab postdoctoral scholar who led the development and construction of BREAD. "It is great to do this kind of creative tabletop-scale science, where a small team can do everything from building the experiment to data analysis but still have a great impact on modern particle physics."

The next stage of the BREAD experiment will see the apparatus transported to the magnet facility at Argonne National Laboratory. Additionally, facilities like SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, MIT, Caltech, and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are working on research and development with the University of Chicago and Fermilab for future recipes of the BREAD experiment.

Thailand has signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation on the China-led International Lunar Research Station (ILRS).

The memorandum of understanding was signed April 5 by Xu Zhanbin, deputy administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA) and Permsuk Sutchaphiwat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI).

The two sides also signed an MoU on cooperation in the exploration and peaceful use of outer space, according to a CNSA statement.

Thailand and China will cooperate on the demonstration, project implementation, operation and application of ILRS, according to CNSA. The pair will organize expert teams to conduct research spanning science, engineering and international cooperation, and form a cooperation plan.

Thailand becomes the ninth country to join the ILRS. China and Russia formally announced the joint project in St. Petersburg, Russia, in June 2021. Venezuela, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, South Africa and Egypt signed up during 2023.

The China-led ILRS envisions constructing a permanent lunar base in the 2030s, with precursor missions in the 2020s. These include Chang’e-7 around 2026 and the later Chang’e-8 in-situ resource utilization technology test mission. Both multi-spacecraft missions will target the lunar south pole.

The initiative is seen as a China-led, parallel project and potential competitor to the NASA-led Artemis Program. On the diplomatic front, Uruguay in February became the 36th country to sign the Artemis Accords which outline best practices in lunar and deep space exploration.

China’s Deep Space Exploration Laboratory (DSEL) under CNSA stated last year that China aimed to complete the agreements with founding members of ILRS by October 2023. It appears this deadline has moved and China is still attracting founding members.

Thailand is already engaged in the ILRS project. The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) signed an agreement on cooperation in the ILRS in September last year. This coincided with a payload proposed by the institute being announced as accepted to join China’s future Chang’e-7 mission.

NARIT is one of a series of other firms, universities and organizations that have signed agreements on the ILRS.

Marc Julienne, director of the Center for Asian Studies at the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI), told SpaceNews last week that China’s space cooperation is focusing on the “Global South,” because of a lack of better alternatives and broader diplomatic reasons.

China and Russia initially hoped to attract European countries to join the initiative. The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 ended any hopes of such partnerships.

Thailand is not a major space player but is growing its space footprint. It drafted a Space Activities Act in 2021 with the aim of promoting the country’s space-related economy and technologies. Its government approved a “national space master plan 2023-2037” in late 2022, defining eight strategies, including international cooperation, to boost its space economy for the purposes of national security, prosperity and sustainability.

THEOS-2, a remote sensing satellite built by Airbus Defence and Space for Thailand’s Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency, launched on a Vega rocket last October. Satellite operator Thaicom has four satellites operational in geostationary orbit. It last month ordered a new, small GEO satellite from Astranis for launch in 2025.

Partnerships with countries like Japan and organizations such as the European Space Agency (ESA) have helped in developing Thailand’s space-related infrastructure and expertise.

Meanwhile China is moving ahead with its lunar exploration hardware. Last month China launched its Queqiao-2 lunar communications relay satellite. The spacecraft will facilitate the unprecedented Chang’e-6 lunar far side sample return mission, due to launch next month. It will also later support the Chang’e-7 and later Chang’e-8 missions to the lunar south pole landings.

A pair of small navigation and communications technology test satellites launched along with Queqiao-2. The pair, Tiandu-1 and Tiandu-2, separated from each other in lunar orbit April 3.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Blue Origin announced plans April 4 for its first crewed New Shepard flight in more than 18 months, a mission that will give an opportunity for America’s first Black astronaut candidate to finally go to space.

The company said the six-person crew of the NS-25 suborbital mission will include Ed Dwight. He was a U.S. Air Force pilot announced by the Kennedy administration in 1961 as an astronaut candidate, the first Black person to be considered. He graduated from the Air Force’s Aerospace Research Pilot School but was not selected by NASA in its next astronaut classes. He left the Air Force in 1966 and became a sculptor.

Dwight’s inclusion on NS-25 is sponsored by Space for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that sponsors flights for individuals on commercial spacecraft. “Ed is an industry legend, and his ascension above the Karman Line is long overdue,” said Dylan Taylor, founder of Space for Humanity who flew on New Shepard in 2021, on social media.

Also supporting the flight is the Jaison and Jaime Robinson Foundation; Jaison Robinson flew on the NS-21 New Shepard flight in June 2022.

Dwight is in line to become the oldest person to fly in space, as he is currently about a week older than actor William Shatner was when he became the oldest person to go to space on a New Shepard flight in October 2021. Blue Origin has not revealed a launch date for NS-25 but the announcement of the crew suggests the company plans to conduct the flight in the near future.

The other five people flying on NS-25 are Mason Angel, a venture capitalist; Sylvain Chiron, a French businessman and philanthropist; Kenneth L. Hess, a software entrepreneur; Carol Schaller, a retired accountant; and Gopi Thotakura, a pilot and founder of a wellness center.

The NS-25 mission will be the first crewed flight of New Shepard since the NS-22 mission in August 2022. A month later, a payload-only flight of New Shepard suffered an engine problem a minute into the flight, triggering the capsule’s abort system. The capsule landed safely but the vehicle’ propulsion module was lost.

Blue Origin concluded that the thermal damage caused structural failure of the engine’s nozzle. The company resumed New Shepard flights with another payload mission in December 2023, stating at the time that it would conduct its next crewed mission “soon.”

Mitsubishi takes stake in Starlab Space

Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp. is joining Starlab Space, the joint venture of Voyager Space and Airbus Defence and Space that is developing a commercial space station.

Starlab Space announced April 4 that Mitsubishi has become a strategic partner of Starlab Space and would take an equity stake in the joint venture. A Starlab spokesperson declined to provide specific details about the agreement, including its financial value or the size of the equity stake.

“We are excited to join forces with Starlab, a best-in-class team comprising Airbus and Voyager, to drive innovation and catalyze advancements in space exploration,” said Mikito Nakaniwa, division chief operating officer of Mitsubishi’s Infrastructure, Ship & Aerospace Division, in a statement.

The announcement did not identify any specific roles or responsibilities for Mitsubishi in Starlab, stating only that the company would “significantly increase the value of Starlab” by using space research to support terrestrial product development in a range of industries. It would also provide Japanese industry with access to Starlab’s capabilities.

“Our next-generation space station relies on both innovation and experience. Hence Mitsubishi Corporation, a pioneer of space business in Japan since the 1960s with a strong drive for shaping the future, is a perfect addition to our team,” said Mike Schoellhorn, chief executive of Airbus Defence and Space, in the statement.

Having a Japanese company involved in Starlab could also help the company access funding from the Japanese government. Current partners in the International Space Station are pondering how they will continue their current activities on the station once it is retired around the end of the decade, with a preference for keeping investments in their countries rather than making direct payments to an American commercial space station operator.

Voyager and Airbus announced the creation of the Starlab Space joint venture in August, with Voyager holding a majority stake. The companies had previously announced an agreement where Airbus would provide technical support, including work on the station’s single large module, for Starlab.

One reason for the partnership was to give Starlab better access to European markets through Airbus. In November, Airbus and Voyager announced they signed a memorandum of understanding with the European Space Agency to explore how to use Starlab to provide ESA with continued access to low Earth orbit after the retirement of the ISS. That could involve using commercial cargo and crew vehicles developed in Europe with the support of ESA, which announced a cargo vehicle initiative around the time the memorandum was signed.

Starlab Space announced in January that it reached an agreement with SpaceX to launch the Starlab station on a single flight of SpaceX’s Starship vehicle in the late 2020s.
