Normally overwhelmed by the bright solar disk, the expansive corona, the sun's outer atmosphere, is an alluring sight. But the subtle details and extreme ranges in the corona's brightness, although discernible to the eye, are notoriously difficult to photograph. Pictured here, however, using multiple images and digital processing, is a detailed image of the Sun's corona taken during the April 20, 2023 total solar eclipse from Exmouth, Australia. Clearly visible are intricate layers and glowing caustics of an ever changing mixture of hot gas and magnetic fields. Bright looping prominences appear pink just around the Sun's limb. Light has been detected from a planet similar to Earth – but it has no atmosphere.

Nasa’s infrared Spitzer Space Telescope discovered several rocky exoplanets orbiting a star known as TRAPPIST-1.

But now, thanks to the James Webb Space Telescope, also known as the Webb, one of the rocky exoplanets orbiting the star has had its temperature measured.

The planet, known as TRAPPIST-1b, gives off no visible light but instead has an infrared glow.

Dr Pierre-Olivier Lagage, a co-author on the study, said: ‘There was one target that I dreamed of having.

‘And it was this one. This is the first time we can detect the emission from a rocky, temperate planet. It’s a really important step in the story of discovering exoplanets.’

The researchers found that TRAPPIST-1b is also blistering hot, clocking in at roughly around 230C – which is around the temperature of an oven.

However, even though it probably lacks an atmosphere, the planet is the first to have any form of light by an exoplanet as small and as cool as the rocky planets in our solar system, Nasa said.

Dr Thomas Greene, a Nasa astrophysicist and lead author said: ‘These observations take advantage of Webb’s mid-infrared capability.

‘No previous telescopes have had the sensitivity to measure such dim mid-infrared light.’

The find is an important step in determining whether planets orbiting small active stars like TRAPPIST-1 can house atmospheres needed to support life.

The seven planets initially caused great excitement as all the distant worlds were around the size of Earth but had an M-dwarf star – the coolest and smallest type of star – as their host.

However, TRAPPIST-1 b, is the innermost planet and receives about four times the amount of energy that Earth gets from the Sun.

Previous observations of the planet were not sensitive enough to determine if it had an atmosphere or if it was just a rocky planet, but simulations of the tide-locked planet – meaning one side always faces its host – would suggest that the planet would have a lower temperature and as the air would redistribute the heat around both sides.

However, the Webb detected a significantly hotter temperature, suggesting it has no atmosphere and, unfortunately, adds to the list of planets that cannot house humans.

The study is published in the journal Nature.

New ‘Eclipse Watch’ Tool Shows Eclipses from Space Any Time

Do you wish you could see a total solar eclipse every day? With a new online tool called Eclipse Watch, you can observe the Sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, in real time with eclipse-like images from space as we count down to the next total solar eclipse on Earth.

The new Helioviewer Eclipse Watch data visualization tool displays images captured by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), a joint NASA-ESA (European Space Agency) mission stationed one million miles from Earth. Each time you refresh the page, you can see the latest image from the spacecraft. These images showcase some of the features of the Sun that you may also be able to see from the ground on Earth when the Moon completely covers the Sun during the total solar eclipse.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. This celestial event reveals the extended atmosphere of the Sun, which is normally obscured from view by bright sunlight. Hot gas streaming from the surface of the Sun into interplanetary space can be observed during this time.

To study the Sun's extended atmosphere when a total solar eclipse isn't happening, scientists can use special telescopes called coronagraphs. These instruments create an artificial eclipse by using a round disk to block out the light from the Sun (the same way the Moon does during an eclipse) and reveal parts of the Sun’s atmosphere that are normally too dim to see.

The Helioviewer Eclipse Watch provides eclipse-like images that are captured over a hundred times each day by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph Experiment (LASCO) instrument on the SOHO spacecraft. LASCO observes the Sun’s corona and can identify clouds of material called coronal mass ejections that erupt from the Sun. These images offer a glimpse of what you could witness during the historic celestial event on April 8. LASCO’s disk obscures a larger area than the Moon will block during the total solar eclipse, as indicated by the black circular area in the Eclipse Watch tool. A picture of the Moon is overlaid on the image for scale. This means that during the total eclipse on Earth you will get to see even more of the Sun’s extended atmosphere than LASCO captures.

SOHO launched in 1995 to study our star, from the Sun's deep core to its outer corona. LASCO is one of 12 instruments on SOHO used to study different solar regions and a constant stream of particles and energy from the Sun called the solar wind. Thousands of comets that pass close to the Sun – called sungrazing comets – have also been discovered in SOHO images.

A rocket transiting the moon is a pretty rare sight. Capturing a good photo of that kind of transit takes some serious skill.

That skill is worthy of some major praise. Pascal Fouquet, a photographer from Orlando, Florida, captured such a shot, and was chosen as the United States' National Award first place winner for the Sony World Photography Awards 2024. The awards program comes out of a partnership between Sony and the World Photography Organization, and receives hundreds of thousands of photo submission from across the globe.

Fouquet captured his Falcon Heavy photo just before the new year, when SpaceX launched the United States Space Force X-37B spaceplane on the USSF-52 mission. The uncrewed X-37B spacecraft lifted off atop Falcon Heavy from NASA's Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida on Dec. 28, at 8:07 p.m. EST (0107 GMT on Dec. 29).

Fouquet realized the upcoming opportunity to try and nail that shot less than 48 hours before the launch took place, he told Space.com. "Scouting for an ideal location proved challenging, given the limited spots available for capturing the shot. Ultimately, I settled on a somewhat unconventional choice—an open field behind a hospice center 13.8 miles away from the launch pad," he said in an email.

The trick, Fouquet said, was to expose the camera to capture the details of the moon, not the rocket. Shot with a Nikon D850, Fouquet set his shutter speed to just 1/1600 of a second, capturing the split second moment Falcon Heavy passed in front of the moon.

This was the seventh launch for the Space Force's secretive X-37B space plane, which remains in orbit at the time of this publication. On its last mission, X-37B broke its own on-orbit record after returning from its mission that lasted 908 days.

It can now be revealed that Japan's proposal for a future moon rover is "more than meets the eye."

As first announced last June but just now starting to ship, a new scale model of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) Lunar Cruiser not only faithfully reproduces the details of the astronaut transport developed in conjunction with Toyota, but also transforms into Optimus Prime, the leader of the Autobots.

Yes, the new Takara Tomy toy is a crossover between the real agency's concept and Transformers, the "robots in disguise" franchise.

"Bring the ultimate Transformers experience to your collection with the Takara Tomy Transformers Lunar Cruiser Optimus Prime action figure!" reads Habro's Pulse website, the toy company's direct-to-fan online store, which took $75 pre-orders for the Takara Tomy release. "This figure was designed to replicate the appearance of the Lunar Cruiser pre-exhibited in 2019."

For the past five years, JAXA and Toyota have been advancing research on a vehicle that would enable sustained exploration of the moon's surface. Unlike the historic Apollo lunar rover and the lunar terrain vehicle(s), or LTVs, that NASA is set to announce for the Artemis program, the Lunar Cruiser (named after Toyota's Land Cruiser) is pressurized, allowing it to serve as a camper van for multi-day excursions.

Toyota's contributions to the six-wheeled JAXA rover include its fuel cell, which, in addition to a solar panel, will power the vehicle.

Takara Tomy's model is based on the first version of the Lunar Cruiser, which featured more windows, larger tires and a wider high-gain antenna than a revised concept shown off by JAXA and Toyota in October 2023.

Of course, neither iteration of the proposed rover could unfold to become a red, blue and gray robot. (If unfamiliar, Optimus Prime, or Convoy as he is known in Japan, becomes a semi truck in his original configuration, though he has taken on other vehicles before becoming the Lunar Cruiser.)

It takes about two dozen moves to fold, twist, deploy and snap into place the fully articulated robot form of the model (or in reverse, back into the rover). Optimus stands about 7 inches (18 centimeters) tall and is made almost entirely from ABS plastic.

The included solar panel accessory folds in half to become a shield that Optimus Prime can hold or mount to his body. In Lunar Cruiser form, the solar panel can be mounted on the vehicle's side (as JAXA and Toyota plan) or stored inside by lifting open the rover's hatchback.

The Transformers Lunar Cruiser Optimus Prime is not the only time Transformers has crossed over with space exploration, both on screen and in real life.

In the original 1980s cartoon, Astrotrain was an evil Decepticon who could turn into both a train's engine and a space shuttle. In one episode, he transported Megatron, the leader of the Decepticons, to the moon, where they ultimately faced off with Optimus and the Autobots.

Later, Hasbro and Takara Tomy introduced Galaxy Shuttle, an Autobot that could transform into the Orion winged orbiter, and Sky Lynx, which went from a bird-like creature (or "dino-bird") to a space shuttle complete with a NASA logo on the side of its payload bay.

In "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," the third movie in the Michael Bay series, released in 2011, the plot revolves around a piece of technology that crashed on the moon in the 1960s, re-writing the history of NASA's Apollo 11 mission. The film was partially shot at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and included scenes filmed inside the Vehicle Assembly Building and on Pad 39A with the space shuttle Discovery.

Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin had a cameo in "Dark of the Moon," where he is seen meeting Optimus Prime. Satellite terminal supplier CopaSAT storms into military market

CopaSAT, a supplier of communications equipment, is seeing a surge in orders for its militarized Starshield satellite terminal since its launch a few months ago.

The company, based in Seminole, Florida, designed a ruggedized satellite internet terminal that uses the Starshield electronically steered antenna built by SpaceX.

Starlink is the SpaceX satellite constellation that provides broadband internet access around the world. Consumers can purchase Starlink dishes for residential and commercial use but the system has also proven valuable for providing internet in disaster zones, aboard aircraft and ships, and for military and government applications.

SpaceX offers a Starshield version of the Starlink service that has enhanced encryption intended for government and military use.

The problem with the standard Starshield terminal is that it lacks the durability required for harsh battlefield environments, said Charlie Daniels, CopaSAT’s director of business development.

To fill that need, CopaSAT built a 30-pound militarized terminal called Storm V3 that sells for $30,000. Inside a hardened enclosure is the Starshield antenna, power systems and other components. A number of U.S. military organizations, said Daniels, have ordered about 150 terminals since the product was launched in August.

In tests, the terminals showed they can survive extreme temperatures, vibration, dust and other punishing conditions, he said. The standard Starshield dish has additional cybersecurity compared to the regular Starlink terminal, but it can’t handle the environmental conditions of military operations and when the cables break, they can’t be repaired in the field.

Other military features added

Another feature of the Storm V3 is that it can switch between AC power and batteries or DC power, a crucial feature for mobile units, said Daniels. The standard Starshield terminal only runs on AC power.

Also, standard Starshield terminals come with proprietary cables that require complete replacement if damaged. CopaSAT’s version is outfitted with military-approved connectors, allowing for battlefield repairs without needing entirely new cables.

At the request of military users, CopaSAT equipped its terminal with a SIM card slot, enabling the network to seamlessly switch between satellite and cellular service to ensure uninterrupted communication even if the satellite link is temporarily unavailable.

Daniels said CopaSAT’s road to becoming a Starshield terminal supplier was a pivot born of necessity.

Founded in 2014, the company initially built ruggedized satellite terminals using electronically steered antennas from Kymeta. But when Kymeta brought that capability in-house, CopaSAT was forced to re-evaluate its business.

The dawn of Starlink as a disruptive satellite internet service presented an opportunity for CopaSATto apply its ruggedization expertise, he said. “Starlink was just taking off and we saw there would be a demand for a militarized version that could go places the standard dish couldn’t survive.”

The three-member panel for the Judicial Qualifications Commission decided Peterson is guilty of "systemic incompetence" because she ignored courthouse rules, abused courthouse personnel, made inappropriate posts on social media and, in repeated cases, failed to do her job.

The extraordinary decision to remove Peterson follows four separate hearings starting in September 2023 where Peterson had a chance to testify and confront her accusers. She faced 30 counts of misconduct.

The one that troubled the panel the most involved Peterson's decision to jail a woman for simply trying to amend her marriage certificate to include the real name of her recently discovered father.

When PJ Skelton originally married, she listed her uncle as her father on the marriage certificate because he raised her. Years later, when she learned her birth father's name, she returned to amend the record. Instead, Judge Peterson failed to warn

PJ Skelton served two days of a 20-day jail sentence for contempt before her husband could pay a $500 fine.

"Such a hasty and shockingly disproportionate reaction is the hallmark of (Peterson’s) intemperance," wrote the panel.

The report criticized Peterson’s attempt at a neighborhood meeting to get her HOA to settle a lawsuit she had filed, even though she knew the HOA was represented by an attorney.

Douglas judge guilty of ‘systemic incompetence’

Douglas County Probate Judge Christina Peterson became a magnet of controversy from the moment she was sworn in for what is typically a non-controversial job. The hearing panel for the Judicial Qualifications Commission decided the probate judge’s actions proved she is guilty of quote systemic incompetence.

"(Peterson’s) attempts to avoid responsibility for these clear violations bordered on farcical, severely eroding her credibility with the Hearing Panel," wrote panel members.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office complained Judge Peterson ignored their orders and held a wedding after hours, allowing people inside without deputies present.

She once hit a panic button when a deputy was late escorting her to court, causing needless panic among security.

And the report pointed out when county staff criticized her actions, it "quickly triggers allegations of obstructionism or even racism."

One of Peterson's many social media posts the hearing panel found objectionable. In this one, she asks the public for cash birthday presents.

"These communications and actions reveal a judge (Respondent) who publicly vilifies colleagues, is quick to threaten them with unnecessary legal action, and generally projects a spiteful and vainglorious persona."

Peterson’s main defense was her inexperience as a judge, a problem she promised had been addressed through additional training.

But the panel wasn’t buying it.

The report also cited multiple examples of failure to actually do her job which needlessly delayed petitions before her office. The hearing panel said Peterson was guilty of "systemic incompetence… (Judges) are expected to act in a manner that promotes the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary. Respondent has shown that she cannot — or will not — do so. And so she must go."

The Georgia Supreme Court will ultimately decide whether to approve the hearing panel's recommendation. Peterson has 20 business days to file a response and remains on the bench. Her attorney Lester Tate said "we disagree with the recommendation of removal and intend to go to the next level."

Peterson also faces opposition in next month's primary election. And earlier this year, her HOA began garnishing her judicial wages for the $43,446.76 judgment against her

Last year, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio set a world record for the longest time spent in space by a US astronaut after an impressive 371 days.

The 48-year-old returned to Earth on September 27, 2023, landing in Kazakhstan after his six-month mission was extended by a further six months.

Upon his landing back on Earth, Rubio said he would be assessed by a medical team and that he would need time to re-adjust to Earth's gravity.

But while the incredible record will cement the astronaut's time in space in history, his year-long escapade had some effects on the astronaut.

While most of us Earth-dwellers would never even think of the consequences of such a long time in space, it was revealed what the cost of living without gravity for such an extended period of time actually is.

In actual fact, the lack of gravity will cause a decrease in muscle mass and even bone loss within the first few months of a mission.

Dr Jennifer Fogarty, chief scientific officer at Baylor College of Medicine's Translational Research Institute for Space Health, told ABC News at the time: "How do you coordinate movement like walking, which you haven't done for a long period of time, and then the idea of balance?

"When you put those two together, it can kind of create a little bit of a precarious situation and something that's very well-monitored with the crew members when they land on Earth."

Dr Fogarty went on to explain that the longer the mission goes on for, the longer it will likely take for the astronaut to reacclimatize when back on Earth.

Not only this, but a person's blood flow can also be heavily affected when living in space, which can cause symptoms such as blurred vision or eye swelling, due blood and cerebrospinal fluid shifting up the body - known as Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome.

According to Dr Michael Decker, co-director of the Center for Aerospace Physiology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, the veins in our body have valves in them to ensure 'blood doesn't flow backwards when we stand up'.

Remove gravity from the equation and it has a impact on blood flow.

"Some of this increased intracranial pressure can actually impact the eye and lead to visual impairment. Sometimes when astronauts land, that visual impairment does not necessarily resolve." he further explained.

The isolated environment could also cause fatigue, stress and lack of sleep.

During his time in space, Rubio's mental and physical health would have been assessed by scientists, as well as his immune system and any changes to his genes.

And in January of this year, Rubio revealed he'd spent four months back on Earth recovering and 'reincorporating [himself] back into Earth.'

"You adapt incredibly quickly to being in space, but then unfortunately, the readaptation process back to earth can sometimes be a little bit longer and more difficult." he told TIME.

"And that's just, I think, because the forces of gravity and the forces at play here on Earth tend to have a stronger effect on your body. So it takes two to three months to get yourself back to where you were pre-flight. I'm feeling pretty normal."

"At this point, I feel like I'm back to 90-95%. So lots of exercise, lots of testing, and science."

The Air Force Safety Center released a new strategic plan outlining new goals and focus areas to align with Department of the Air Force priorities.

The DAF Safety Strategic Plan establishes the requirements for the enterprise to achieve its vision in support of national and department-level guidance. The plan will be used to identify resource requirements, prioritize activities, align manpower, and provide the insights necessary for safety professionals to make decisions at their level as appropriate.

The new mission statement, “Increase combat power through Risk Management, Training, and Analysis,” highlights the need to exploit the latest technology tools and professional expertise to analyze mishaps and operational trends, building support for risk-informed decisions at all levels of leadership. While the new vision, an operational force maximizing readiness in any environment, acknowledges the DAF is foremost an operational force responsible for defending the homeland and national interests against adversaries.

“As safety leaders, it’s our job to ensure the safety enterprise is trained, agile, and ready to integrate new Air Force operational concepts to deter, and if needed defeat, great power competitors,” said Maj. Gen. Sean Choquette, DAF chief of safety and AFSC commander. “Safety’s job is to prepare our forces with the resources and skills to make risk-informed decisions at home or in combat.”

The strategic plan outlines six goals safety will prioritize going into the future:

- Fully Integrate Risk Management into All Training and Operations – ensure safety principles and risk management are infused into all facets of planning, preparation, execution, and assessment.

- Integrate Risk Management into Agile Combat Operations – develop and deploy the tools and training needed to help make informed risk decisions in ACE and future operating concepts.

- Evolve Support to the Space Enterprise – develop and implement plans, policies, and engagements to evolve support to the growing space enterprise

- Strengthen Nuclear Surety – continue ensuring nuclear safety and surety as well as weapons mishap prevention, explosive safety risk management, and system safety and design certification is robust, comprehensive, and responsive.

- Optimize Analytical Ecosystem and Data Fabric – employ emerging and innovative technology tools to provide predictive, and eventually prescriptive, analytical products to drive risk-informed decisions to operational commands across the DAF.

- Evolve and Modernize the Safety Workforce – evolve DAF Safety University, creating courses that touch on Air Force and Space Force safety, and employ modern training methods and tools.

The strategic plan also described risk management and the role it plays in the safety enterprise.

While there are inherent risks in all the DAF does, DAF safety incorporates policy development, systems acquisitions and testing, operational procedures, and data analysis to manage that risk and to support Airmen and Guardians. Risk management is not evaluating risk and deciding whether or not to take action. Combat requires action. Risk management entails utilizing an assessment and decision process to determine how to best mitigate risk in execution of the mission.

As part of the commitment to follow through, the DAF safety enterprise will be engaged and involved in both the execution and oversight of this strategy. To succeed, the strategic plan must be executed, tracked, assessed, adjusted and evaluated. This iterative process will drive information and analysis upwards to ensure tactical execution achieves planned strategic outcomes.

Choquette also described safety’s importance and why these focus areas are important.

“Safety is an operational imperative,” Choquette said. “Our work directly impacts Airmen and Guardians every single day. Ultimately, our safety mission relies upon the disciplined approach of individual Airmen and Guardians – they are the key component in our enterprise.”

Effective April 1, the Department of the Air Force approved a new incentive pay for Airmen and Guardians assigned to qualifying bases in the U.S. where the temperature is expected to drop below minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cold Weather Assignment Incentive Pay is a single lump sum payment given to Airmen and Guardians after signing an agreement to serve a prescribed tour length of at least 12 months, depending on qualifying location.

Locations that meet this threshold include Minot and Grand Forks Air Force Bases and Cavalier Space Force Station in North Dakota, Clear Space Force Station, Eielson Air Force Base and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska, as well as Malmstrom AFB, Montana.

“Airmen and Guardians living in extremely cold conditions faced unique out-of-pocket costs,” said Alex Wagner, Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. “In addition to the assignment and retention benefits of the pay, it also comes down to making sure we do our best to take care of our service members and their families stationed at these critical installations.”

This payment intends to ease the financial burden of purchasing certain cold weather essentials, such as extreme cold weather gear, all-season and/or snow tires, tire mounts and alignments, engine block heaters and emergency winter car kits, as well as further incentivizing assignments.

Although AIP-CW is effective April 1, the first pay date is anticipated for July 1, 2024, meaning Airmen and Guardians who move to a qualifying location between April 1 and June 30 will receive payment retroactively.

The amount of AIP-CW Airmen and Guardians are eligible to receive is based on criteria in the five pay levels outlined in the table below and is subject to change.

This change follows the Department of Defense implementation of the Fiscal Year 2023 National Defense Authorization Act, which included language authorizing special duty pay for members based in cold-weather climate conditions and the FY24 NDAA, which clarifies the temperature parameters that qualify an area as a cold-weather location.

“We want to ensure Airmen, Guardians and their families have the resources needed to safely live and work in an extreme cold-weather environment,” Wagner added.

The Secure World Foundation on April 2 released its annual report, “Global Counterspace Capabilities: An Open Source Assessment,” that sheds light on the growing space arms race between the United States, Russia and China.

The report, compiled from publicly available information, details the counterspace capabilities — essentially space weapons — being developed by a dozen countries. Notably, it finds that Russia and China are rapidly catching up to the United States in key areas like electronic warfare and space domain awareness.

Both Russia and China have made significant strides in developing space-based electronic warfare tools that can disrupt or disable enemy satellites, the report found. This includes technologies like electronic jamming systems and directed energy weapons using lasers or microwaves.

The two countries have also caught up in the space domain awareness arena with advanced inspector satellites capable of maneuvering alongside orbiting spacecraft for up-close monitoring or attacks.

Russian seeking to regain Soviet-era dominance

Russia in particular has ramped up its space warfare capabilities over the last decade as it seeks to regain Soviet-era military advantages that were lost after the Cold War ended, according to the report.

While Pentagon and defense officials have raised alarms for years, the SWF report provides more granular details into the specific counterspace weapons being developed by Russia and China.

The SWF in its report briefly mentioned recent rumors of a new Russian program to develop nuclear-powered satellites that could slam the U.S. with electromagnetic pulses, potentially crippling huge portions of the military’s space asset fleet. It noted that details of this threat remain largely unknown.

For China, space weapons development is being driven by a desire to counter U.S. military superiority and increase its own regional clout, the report states. Beijing views the ability to nullify American space systems as key to deterring potential future conflicts.

It’s unclear if China intends to use offensive counterspace capabilities or just have them as a deterrent, the report says.

This result shouldn't surprise anyone. Inflation has driven up operational costs for businesses across the US and shrunk profit margins for major food chains in the past few years. This has led to higher menu prices (like the "$18 Big Mac") and slowing sales for every major fast food company. Another anchor dragging on the restaurant business in many regions was at least two years of covid stimulus coupled with rent moratoriums, creating aggressive labor shortages and raising wages in upwards of $16 per hour for brand new no-skill employees.

Small chains and mom-and-pop businesses simply can't compete. Larger chains raised prices but have also been forced to reduce employees and labor costs through automation, but the layoffs are just getting started.

Enter California's "FAST Recovery Act" passed into law in 2022 and going into effect in April of this year - The legislation requires a particular set of food chains dealing in certain kinds of products outlined in the law to raise their minimum wages (already at $16 an hour on average) to $20 an hour. The income increase is limited to chains that have 60 or more locations in the state of California (meaning, the combined number of locations regardless of who owns them must be higher than 60) Keep in mind that while many of these chains are associated with international corporations, they are owned and run by franchisees; they are still family run businesses.

Mass layoffs are now a guarantee with many restaurants already firing thousands of workers as well as some chains closing multiple locations because the cost of operation will be higher than the benefits.

"Restaurants are struggling to stay above water, and Democrats just threw them an anvil," California Assembly Republican leader James Gallagher told FOX Business. "We warned Democrats this new mandate would cost jobs. They ignored us, and here we are with the highest unemployment rate in the country poised to get even worse."

The "digital options" that many fast food franchises are referring to are automated ordering systems as well as robot workers which are slowly but surely becoming more cost effective than human laborers. At least one fast food location in California is testing a fully robotic restaurant with no human workers.

Layoffs will accelerate along with the normalization of the technology, and the high wages that are crushing profit margins are making the decision easy for business owners. Some chains have reported that they will be forced to cut working crews in half; meaning, those working will be paid $4 an hour more, but they'll have to work twice as hard per shift. The most probable end result in the next 5 years will be the majority of chain restaurants operating with a tiny crew of humans working alongside increasing automation.

The political left is already accusing the fast food industry in California of "retaliation" for the wage increase which was negotiated in part with restaurant workers unions involved. This is what they asked for, and now it's happening; for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

The problem that is typical among leftists is a lack of understanding when it comes to the basics of business operations. Profit margins can be thin and money can still be made due to sheer scale, but revenues at that level are often calculated in cents or fractions of a cent per sale.

This kind of business model is beyond the comprehension of the average socialist. They simply see workers whose wages are not keeping pace with the high cost of living in California and assume business owners are greedy. Instead of confronting the state government that caused higher prices through extreme regulation and taxation, they want to give that very government even more power to punish businesses that are already under pressure.

Well, get ready for more job losses and get ready for the takeover of fast food robots because these are the only options franchise restaurants have left. They might be able to force business owners to pay $20 an hour for no-skill labor, but they can't force those business owners to keep hiring.

Furthermore, it's likely that the FAST Act will trigger yet another tsunami of businesses leaving California for other states with less bureaucracy and a less demanding labor market. Meaning, more jobs for red states and more unemployment for California.

Last month, the Maryland Department of Corrections (MDC) released their preliminary plan for the demolition of the Baltimore City Detention Center. Governor Larry Hogan announced the immediate closure Baltimore jail last July following years of concerns and controversy over conditions for inmates and corrections officers. MDC is now seeking to tear down several significant historic buildings including the 157-year-old Warden’s House and the west wing of the iconic Maryland Penitentiary whose turrets have stood out in the Baltimore skyline since the early 1890s. If the Maryland General Assembly funds the project, estimated to cost $482 million, MDC hopes to start design work in July 2016 and start demolition in March 2017.

“Campaign Finance Mule” Investigative Reporter/Researcher Peter Bernegger Arrested on Day of Wisconsin Primary – Charged With Rarely Used Crime

Wisconsin investigative reporter and researcher Peter Bernegger of Election Watch Incorporated was arrested and booked by the Dane County Sheriff this morning for “Simulating Legal Process,” according to the Dane County Sheriff’s website. Bernegger was intricately involved in exposing election campaign “smurfs,” or donors who are believed to be unknowingly used to launder numerous small-dollar donations to political candidates. Bernegger previously told The Gateway Pundit that the “smurfing” scheme “looks like the largest money laundering scheme in the history of the country.”

In March 2023, O’Keefe Media Group’s James O’Keefe interviewed several of these unsuspecting “smurfs” to see if they had donated large quantities of money to candidates and political action committees such as ACTBlue through numerous small-dollar donations. Of course, they hadn’t. These donations often amounted to thousands of dollars from “unemployed” (retired) seniors in numerous small donations.

Democrats such as Senators Raphael Warnock and John Fetterman, Governors Katie Hobbs and Gretchen Whitmer, Congressman Troy Carter, and Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Janet Protasiewicz were reported beneficiaries of this operation. Protasiewicz was recently elected to swing the makeup of the Wisconsin Supreme Court in favor of the Democrats.

FOX News eventually reported on the alleged money laundering scheme from “Democratic fundraising behemoth” ActBlue, back in April 2023 after Senator Marco Rubio demanded a Federal Elections Commission investigation into the campaign finance laundering accusations.

Last night, Peter Bernegger was arrested by the Dane County Sheriff’s office and booked this morning for “Simulating Legal Process.” According to Wisconsin H.O.T’s Telegram page, there have only been two convictions for this crime since 1977.

“Simulating Legal Process”, WI Statute 946.68, states:

(1g) In this section, “legal process” includes a subpoena, summons, complaint, warrant, injunction, writ, notice, pleading, order or other document that directs a person to perform or refrain from performing a specified act and compliance with which is enforceable by a court or governmental agency.

(1r)

(a) Except as provided in pars. (b) and (c), whoever sends or delivers to another any document which simulates legal process is guilty of a Class I felony.

(b) If the document under par. (a) is sent or delivered with intent to induce payment of a claim, the person is guilty of a Class H felony.

(c) If the document under par. (a) simulates any criminal process, the person is guilty of a Class H felony.

(2) Proof that a document specified under sub. (1r) was mailed or was delivered to any person with intent that it be forwarded to the intended recipient is sufficient proof of sending.

(3) This section applies even though the simulating document contains a statement to the effect that it is not legal process.

(4) Violation of this section may be prosecuted in either the county where the document was sent or the county in which it was delivered.

Bernegger teamed up with Wisconsin H.O.T “to file 50 ethics complaints with the Wisconsin Elections Commission against both Democrats and Republican campaigns for allegedly accepting laundered funds and published the complaints [at] infoccc.com,” according to Wisconsin H.O.T.

US Assures Iran It "Had No Involvement" In Embassy Strike As IDF Claims Only A 'Military Building' Hit

The Biden administration was notified just minutes before the major Israeli airstrikes on the Iranian Embassy complex in Damascus on Monday, US and Israeli officials have told Axios; however, the Israeli side wasn't asking for a greenlight, the report emphasizes.

The US on Tuesday directly communicated to Iran that it "had no involvement" or advanced knowledge of the strike on the embassy annex which killed top Iranian commanders, including Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who reportedly oversaw IRGC Quds Force operations in Syria and Lebanon.

Crucially, Zahedi's death marks the highest ranking Iranian official killed since the 2020 US assassination of Qassem Soleimani by drone strike outside the Baghdad airport. In the aftermath of the attack on the embassy annex the death toll had risen to eleven. Iranian state television has since said that included among these were 6 Syrian citizens killed.

A National Security Council (NSC) spokesperson has been cited by Axios as underscoring that the United States "had no involvement in the [Israeli] strike and we did not know about it ahead of time."

Iranian state TV described that the attack "was carried out by F-35 fighter jets" which fired six missiles at the building, leaving it flattened. It housed the embassy's consular section as well as the residence of ambassador Hossein Akbari, who apparently wasn't there at the time and thus was unharmed.

Iran and Hezbollah have vowed revenge and that this will be "punished" while Russia has also expressed outraged, as we reported earlier. Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry on Tuesday expressed "the Kingdom’s categorical rejection of targeting diplomatic facilities for any justification, and under any pretext."

A strike against an embassy which is supposed to be 'protected' by international diplomatic norms upheld by the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations is unprecedented and so marks a massive escalation by Israel.

The speech was from the 2nd Coronavirus Symposium was held in the German Bundestag, which Dr Homburg attended on 11th November 2023 along with several prominent voices against unscientific measures and the harmful vaccination campaign.

Prof. Dr. S. Homburg’s speech, published on his website, provides a fact-based overview of the coronavirus era and although a translation of the speech has been published below, the word “Aufarbeitung” is a German word that according to Dr. Peter F Mayer is not easy to translate into English. He has however, provided what he says is best possible translation which he says is probably

“To deal with, to come to terms with the past”.

Dr Mayer has provided more of his thoughts on the word Aufarbeitung which readers may also find interesting. He continues:

Investigators sent a video link to a suspect, then demanded Google identify anyone who'd watched it ina a week, potentially thousands of users.

We’ve all made that joke, “Searching for this in Google is gonna get me on an FBI watch list.” But according to a recent report, that might actually be true if you watched some very specific YouTube videos last year. A United States federal court ordered Google to turn over the identities of tens of thousands of users who watched certain videos in a specific timeframe.

Federal investigators obtained court-approved subpoenas for any YouTube viewers who watched tutorials on mapping via drones and augmented reality software, according to a report from Forbes. The investigators had been communicating with a suspected money launderer undercover, sent them links to the relevant videos, then demanded Google identify anyone who had watched said videos immediately following.

The subpoena included names, addresses, telephone numbers, and browsing history for Google accounts for as many as 30,000 people, tracing traffic to the relevant videos for one week in January 2023. It’s not clear whether Google complied with the demands for user information, though corporations are typically hesitant to fight subpoenas issued by courts.

According to experts from the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project and the Electronic Privacy Information Center interviewed by Forbes, the subpoenas may have violated the US Constitution’s First and Fourth Amendments. These foundational laws protect freedom of speech and restrict unreasonable search and seizure, respectively.

Such potential breaches typically aren’t acted upon unless a victim fights them in court, often resulting in lengthy legal battles that can reach the United States Supreme Court before being resolved.

At least 29 people have been killed and one injured in a fire in a nightclub in Turkey.

The Masquerade club, in the basement of a high-rise building in Istanbul, was closed and being renovated during the day.

The fire broke out just after midday, Istanbul governor Davut Gül said, adding that the cause was unclear.

Mr Gül said that the victims of the fire were thought to have been involved in the renovation work.

Eight people, including the nightclub manager and a person responsible for the renovations, have had warrants out for their arrest in connection with the fire as investigations continue.

Three of them have been detained, while warrants are outstanding for others.

Firefighters and other first responders surrounded the charred and smoking entrance to the club, which occupies two floors underneath a 16-storey residential building in the city's Gayrettepe district.

The number of victims has rapidly increased throughout the afternoon, with the governor's office issuing a string of updates.

The newly re-elected Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem Imamoglu, said the club had not applied for the correct construction permit.

"There is no application [to the local municipality] for a renovation or a construction regarding the place and as it was two floors down from the ground level, it [the work] wasn't visible," he said.

He also offered his condolences on social media to the victims.

"May God have mercy on our citizens who lost their lives, and I wish a speedy recovery to our injured," he said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is aware of the tragedy following a phone call with interior minister Ali Yerlikaya.

Army judge Col. Matthew S. Fitzgerald, who is the fourth judge to preside over the case, said it was 'important to set benchmarks' as he made a goal of proceeding to trial in 2025.

Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi national, is accused of orchestrating the deadly bombing in the port of Aden in 2000, which killed 17 U.S. sailors and wounded 37. He could get the death penalty if convicted by a military commission of charges that include terrorism and murder. The military commission proceedings have repeatedly stalled since al-Nashiri’s arraignment in 2011.

He was originally detained in 2002 and moved to Guantanamo bay in 2006.

Paul Abney, a survivor of the attack and a retired Navy master chef, who was in court for the latest hearing, told the New York Time that he was 'delighted' by the judge's determination to move forward.He told the newspaper: 'Even if it doesn’t happen next year the fact that he’s willing to put a target date down, and make it a goal to shoot for, is, I think, inspiring.'

In February 2018 a previous judge put proceedings on hold after members of the defense team quit over alleged violations of attorney-client privilege. Eight months after that an appeals court rejected arguments that had led to the indefinite stay.

There have also been delays over defense claims that al-Nashiri was tortured at CIA 'black sites' in the wake of 9/11. In June last year a UN report said the United States and several other countries had committed human rights violations against al-Nashiri. The UN working group said he had been arbitrarily detained for more than 20 years and voiced concern about his physical and mental well-being.

Al-Nashiri is accused of organizing the attack on the USS Cole by two suicide bombers in a small boat as the destroyer made a fuel stop in Yemen. The explosion ripped a 40ft hole in the side of the warship. Al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the bombing, which took place 11 months before the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

The judicial ruling that lifted an injunction blocking the assisted suicide of a Calgary woman has been appealed by her father.

Lawyers Sarah Miller and Emily Amirkhari filed two separate notices in the Alberta Court of Appeal on Tuesday appealing rulings by Justice Colin Feasby of applications made by their client, who can only be identified by the initials W.V.

On March 25, Feasby ruled a temporary injunction blocking W.V.’s daughter’s access to Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) had to be lifted, paving the way for the woman, M.V., to seek the life-ending medical procedure.

Feasby stayed his ruling for 30 days to allow the father an opportunity to appeal it.

The Court of King’s Bench also denied an application on March 1 to compel the daughter to answer certain questions about an affidavit she had filed in support of her application to have the injunction lifted.

“W.V. filed an application to compel further questioning and answers,” their appeal notice says.

“The decision to dismiss the application to compel was based on an error of law as to the legal test for directing answers to questions posed during examination,” the appeal states.

The lawyers are asking the appeal court to overturn the ruling and permit them to question their client’s 27-year-old daughter on her MAID application.

In their second notice, they also ask the province’s top court to overturn Feasby’s decision to lift the temporary injunction pending an application for a judicial review of the decision to grant M.V. access to MAID.

The father wants to know how his daughter, who has autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), qualifies for the life-ending procedure, which has been approved by two doctors.

Among the errors the lawyers say Feasby made in his ruling was finding the father does not have a private interest to seek a judicial review.

“The pain of losing a child, even an adult child, is not something that any parent should experience,” Feasby said in his written decision.

“(The parents) have devoted their lives to raising M.V. from birth and have continued to support her since she has come of age.

“They will understandably be devastated by her death,” he said.

But the judge said the injunction was preventing what amounted to a medical decision between the daughter and her doctors, and “the right to choose between living or dying with dignity.”

“An injunction would put M.V. in a position where she would be forced to choose between living a life she has decided is intolerable and ending life without medical assistance.

“This is a terrible choice that should not be forced on M.V., as attempting to end her life without medical assistance would put her at increased risk of pain, suffering and lasting injury.”

No date has been set for an appeal hearing, but Miller and Amirkhari have indicated the case should be dealt with as a fast-track appeal.

Let's back up a little.

California used to be a red state.

Republicans won 8 out of 9 presidential elections during the mid-1900s.

Even in L.A. itself, the GOP won 6 of 10 presidential elections

Then something changed.

In 1986, Reagan cut a deal with Dems and granted amnesty to MILLIONS of illegals, majority of them residing in CA.

This granted them the right to vote.

Since then, the GOP has not won a single presidential election in California.

If TX (40 electoral votes) goes the way of California, the GOP will cease to exist.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Baltimore District has released the first underwater sonar images of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge. The imagery, supplied by the the U.S. Navy’s Naval Sea System Command’s (NAVSEA) Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV), were captured using an underwater imaging tool known as “CODA Octopus,” which will help guide divers using real-time 3D sonar due to the reduced visibility of the water.

“With visibility clouded to just one to two feet because of the four to five feet of mud and loose bottom of the Patapsco River… divers must be guided via detailed verbal directions from operators in vessels topside viewing real-time CODA imagery,” USACE Baltimore wrote on X.

Russia is continuing to make arrests of alleged conspirators involved in the March 22 terror attack on Crocus City Hall in a Moscow suburb which left at least 140 dead and hundreds injured and wounded.

In addition to the four gunmen who were quickly detained, dozens of other alleged plotters have been rounded up amid an ongoing investigation. The Kremlin says it is probing Ukrainian and potential US links to the deadly attack.

Moscow previously announced "substantial evidence" of the attackers' financial links to Ukraine involving cryptocurrency transfers. President Putin has acknowledged that 'Islamic extremists' were behind it, yet said some other entity or even state was likely directing them.

In fresh statements translated to English in Russian state media, Putin said of the terrorists, "They’re doing anything for money, not guided by any religious or political considerations, only financial ones." He added that "any information can be easily bought and sold" in such a market. He vowed "We will definitely get them" - in apparent reference to those who ultimately masterminded the plot.

Washington has vehemently rejected any accusations against either Ukraine or the US or Western governments. Instead, it says the Biden White House tried to warn Russian authorities.

However, on Tuesday Russia’s spy chief, FSB head Sergei Naryshkin stated that US warnings were too broad and ambiguous. There wasn't enough info to prevent any attack, he said.

"The Federal Security Service [FSB] received some information from the U.S. intelligence services that such a thing was unfortunately possible," Naryshkin told a press briefing. "But as our Russian colleagues said, the information was too general and did not allow us to fully identify those who committed this terrible crime," he was cited by Interfax as saying.

Putin in his Tuesday comments also referenced the "mercenary terrorist attacks" which are "a weapon that is being used against Russia" but that in the end it will be a "double-edged weapon" blowing back on those who use it.

Update(1635ET): In a Tuesday afternoon press briefing, National Security Council Communications Adviser John Kirby expressed that the US is "outraged" by the targeted strike on the World Central Kitchen (WCK) convoy overnight. "We were outraged to learn of an IDF strike that killed a number of civilian humanitarian workers yesterday from the World Central Kitchen, which has been relentlessly working to get food to those who are hungry in Gaza," he said.

Kirby laid out that the US expects Israel to conduct a broad and legitimate investigation: "We hope that those findings will be made public, and that there is appropriate accountability held," he told the briefing. Kirby vowed that the US "will continue to press Israel to do more" in protecting aid workers, and noted over 200 local and international aid workers have been killed since the Gaza war started.

The White House also confirmed that President Biden called WCK founder José Andrés and expressed condolences for the seven staff members killed in the strike. The celebrity chef on Tuesday lashed out at Israel for its "indiscriminate killing" of his employees while they were delivering aid.

"The Israeli government needs to stop this indiscriminate killing. It needs to stop restricting humanitarian aid, stop killing civilians and aid workers, and stop using food as a weapon," Andrés said on X. Israel has called it "unintentional" and "tragic" - with PM Netanyahu earlier in the day expressing regret (see below).

The killing of the aid workers, which included three British nationals, an Australian, a Polish national, an American-Canadian dual citizen and a Palestinian, has been featured throughout the day by US news networks. For example for the early half of Tuesday it was the top frontpage story at CNN.com.

But despite the US expressing "outrage" over the attack, when members of the White House press pool got into Q&A with Kirby, he still passionately emphasized that Israel has not violated international humanitarian norms in Gaza. Whatever happened to QAnon?

The once-vocal group and its worldview have largely been folded into the broader Republican Party

As the 2020 election approached, then-President Donald Trump had two problematic groups of supporters that he didn’t want to alienate. One was the Proud Boys, an extremist group that had already earned a reputation for engaging in violence against opponents. The other was more loosely knit: adherents of the QAnon movement.

QAnon was problematic for very different reasons. While there had been crimes linked to the movement (including at least one killing), the political challenge was primarily that the most fervent supporters held views that were somewhere between bizarre and deranged. There’s an international cabal of prominent people in entertainment and the Democratic Party that worships Satan and traffics children to ingest a chemical they produce? Got it.

Those views sat at the extreme, certainly. But even more anodyne manifestations of QAnonism were dubious, centered on an anonymous figure, Q, who allegedly worked in the Trump administration and was helping the president combat the evil deeds of his enemies. Q began posting cryptic messages online a few months into Trump’s presidency, with tens of thousands of people subsequently parsing them for hidden meaning.

By mid-2018, QAnon was a prominent part of Trump rallies. Supporters held up signs or large “Q"s to get on camera, with success. By early 2019, after a spate of news stories drawing attention to the movement’s bizarre beliefs, adherents reported being asked to hide any Q insignia at the president’s rallies.

Then the election rolled around. Trump’s campaign slowly began to embrace members of the movement, recognizing its scale and loyalty to his politics. He refused to condemn even the more extreme forms the movement took and, only weeks before Election Day, even endorsed the idea that QAnon members were combating child trafficking.

Trump lost his reelection bid but worked fervently to avoid leaving the White House. That culminated in the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, an event at which QAnon had a prominent presence.

And then the movement mostly evaporated. Adherents still existed; Trump began elevating their content on his social media platform with regularity. But QAnon simply wasn’t the same force that it had been when he was president.

To explore the reason QAnon lost so much energy — and to figure out where it went — I spoke with The Washington Post’s Will Sommer, author of the book “Trust the Plan: The Rise of QAnon and the Conspiracy That Unhinged America.”

Sommer points to 2020 as the height of the QAnon movement's size and influence. It wasn't just Trump's reelection bid, though that was important, given Trump's role in the purported fight against the elites. It was also the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests — and even the death of Jeffrey Epstein, a galvanizing point of skepticism about official narratives.

Then came the election and Trump's response to it — a response that was itself centered on a wide-ranging, unproven (and untrue) theory about a conspiracy fomented by Democratic elites to keep him out of power. QAnon adherents — who'd come to believe that there would soon be a “storm” in which their evildoing opponents were uprooted, jailed or killed — were paying attention.

“QAnon played a huge role in Jan. 6,” Sommer said. He noted that Ashli Babbitt, the woman killed by a law enforcement officer as she climbed through a window at the Capitol, embraced the movement. So did scores of others arrested for their involvement in the riot. If the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys aimed to be the spark for the unrest that began that day, Sommer explained, QAnon adherents served effectively as the gasoline.

The effort to block Joe Biden's presidency failed. Trump moved to Florida. Q — generally believed to be a man named Ron Watkins — stopped posting new messages.

“You end up with a sort of reformulated QAnon that is sort of ‘QAnon in the wilderness,’ ” Sommer explained. “It’s no longer ‘this is at hand, the storm,’ but it becomes, you know, perhaps that Trump is secretly still in power or the Biden presidency is being filmed at Tyler Perry Studios or that the election was stolen.”
