"…IN 2014 AND 2016 I warned my listeners of possible future cosmic catastrophes, which happen rarely but regularly, every 100 million years or so, to planet Earth. Humans - depending on how you define "human" (it's really a continuum separating ourselves from our pre-human ancestors, not a dividing line) - have only been around for a few million years out of the roughly 4,000 million years that life has existed.
These catastrophes have in the past wiped out entire classes of living beings, the dinosaurs being the most famous example, but one such extinction event came very close to wiping out all animal life on Earth. So - utterly destroying all human civilization, and all human life forever, is definitely within the realm of possibility. And no one knows when the next such catastrophe will happen…"
